Reviews for The Abbey Hotel

Review 1:Terrible room which was not deluxe in any way I spent two days without a shower as it was so dirty with mildew This was a Christmas surprise for my husband Very disappointed!

Review 2:Quiet room

Review 3:Was woken up in the morning by the neighbour's shower which was extremely loud. The room didn't have any of the period features as advertised, the room was also extremely small. I was informed by the owner that if you book this hotel with an online agent then you can't pick your room and you should contact them directly to get a better room.

Review 4:Friendly staff and easy to find The free breakfast was good

Review 5:Super hotel if you like olde worlde. Character furnishings , very comfy , all mod cons.Lovely welcome and staff very friendly , nothing was too much trouble.Enjoyed the experience very much.

Review 6:Advised upon approval that room needed refurbishing so would have been nice if the price was reduced to reflect this.

Review 7:Excellent breakfast and very friendly staff. Perfect for waking into Bury St.Edmunds (10 mins)

Review 8:Loved the old building and the fact that it wasn't a swish hotel chain. It was individual and the staff were very helpful and friendly. Very clean rooms and breakfast was excellent. Just far enough away from the town with good parking. Will stay again.

Review 9:My daughter and I spent the evening in the lounge with either coffee or wine talking to the owner. The hotel felt very comfortable to be in and the staff were very helpful and friendly.

Review 10:Nothing

Review 11:Great character property, makes a change from modern chain hotels. Great breakfast and host service. Would highly recommend this hotel with it's warm welcome.

Review 12:The only down side was my wife was desperately hoping to relax in a bath, but only a shower was provided.

Review 13:The hotel is a beautiful old worldly place that has oak beamed ceilings and exposed brickwork and is a very pleasant close walk to the Abbey and town square and shops. The room we stayed in was the superior double and the bed was comfy and the room had a living area separate to the bedroom - could have been convenient if we brought our children! All in all a great hotel (and breakfast) in a wonderful little ( undiscovered by us) town.

Review 14:TV signal was not great, but I think that is just the area.

Review 15:Wonderfully comfortable bed. Charming owners and staff. Great location. Super breakfast.

Review 16:Wi-fi is free, but its a bit slow.

Review 17:Lovely traditional Suffolk hotel, full of character. Clean rooms, with very comfortable bed. Easy to find with free parking. Good location close to historical sites and shops. Friendly and helpful management and staff. Good breakfast.

Review 18:We had booked this hotel as it was advertised as being an old tudor/medieval hotel. When we got there we were shown to a room which was like a bedroom in someone's house and had no period features. We asked to be moved and were given a room in the old part of the hotel with oak beams and much more atmosphere, which was better. Unfortunately the bathroom was awful, tiny, cramped with no towel rail or shelf to put our toiletries. As it is advertised as a 4 star - I would have expected free toiletries but there were none, just a note to say that if we had forgotten to pack toiletries we could but some from reception! Hardly 4 star! Also there was no bath, just a very small shower. That night when we used the shower, the door almost fell off as one of the fittings came loose and fell off when we moved it - could have been very dangerous. The location of the hotel wasn't brilliant either, with quite a walk into town, and as there's no restaurant or bar at the hotel, we had to walk in for any food other than breakfast. Bottled water in the room would have been a nice touch too. I think the 4 star rating is quite misleading.

Review 19:Friendly, caring staff, tried their best to make our stay with them a good one. Lovely breakfast. Comfortable bed. Period room with old beams.

Review 20:The full English breakfast was nice - if I wanted to be picky I'd suggest a better quality of sausage. Apart from that it was very good.

Review 21:The room was lovely, nice décor and the bed was very comfortable. I'd certainly recommend the hotel to family and friends.

Review 22:Quiet comfortable attractive hotel of character within easy walking distance of the town centre and with cheerful efficient staff. Good breakfast with a wide choice. Lovely well-furnished lounge.

Review 23:WiFi slow. Shower room and bedroom quite small , the access stairs to our room (14)difficult with suitcases and not for anyone with joint issues. Parking off road but tight.

Review 24:Central for our trip in East Anglia. Staff very ameniable. Breakfast from wide menu cooked to order.

Review 25:A shower instead of a bath with a shower attachment over would have been a lot nicer/easier The sausages at breakfast could have been a bit "meatier!"

Review 26:Nice sized room, but in need of a refurb. We were able to leave our car in the hotel car park the following day whilst we explored Bury, which was great.

Review 27:Broken light in bedroom.

Review 28:Nice comfy bed. Great sitting area and controllable heating. Parking on site, a big plus in Bury St Edmunds, and less than 10 minutes walk into town

Review 29:Nothing really and there's no need to nit pick unnecessarily.

Review 30:The owner and family were very friendly, the place was quiet and comfortable and we loved staying in a Tudor period house.

Review 31:Very comfortable bed , and seating, VEry good bathroom with easefficient shower, our own sitting room and ample , well cooked breakfasts with efficient , cheerful service.

Review 32:The only adverse comment was that there was not a proper shower - only hand held shower - so had to kneel in bath to wash. I understand that there are rooms with showers that I can specify next time.

Review 33:Very friendly and courteous service. My sons joined us for breakfast and were a little late but the staff made them welcome and still cooked breakfast outside normal dining times. Very much appreciated.

Review 34:Hotel and rooms very pleasant but did not warrant - in my view - the tariff charged Access to top floor room with bath via very steep narrow stairs. Need to warn guests in advance.

Review 35:Friendly pleasant staff Attractive historic property Quiet yet within easy walking distance of town

Review 36:Great girls serving breakfast and servicing the room. Lovely attention to detail from lots of fresh breakfast choices to nice teas snd biscuits replenished daily in the room. Ample parking.

Review 37:We only stayed one night but I wish it could have been longer. This hotel has lots of character and the staff were very professional and pleasant.

Review 38:Not a lot of places to eat nearby.

Review 39:Friendly welcome, nice room with comfortable bed. Excellent breakfast. The Hotel is about 10 mins walk from the centre of town. The hotel is a genuine slice of history with great period appeal.

Review 40:Cheap toilet paper and paper coasters for cups in our room not replaced daily. No towel rail in bathroom, only radiator.

Review 41:Had character and good electric shower. Certainly not a 4 star hotel. Expensive for what was on offer.

Review 42:The room was in excess of £100 a night but the tv kept pixelating andbecame unwatchable. The door to the shower room never shut correctlybecause it was warped. There was flaking paint on the ceiling and theadvertised "SECURE PARKING" was far from secure.

Review 43:The breakfast was good but not exceptional. The fresh fruit was good butthe cooked breakfast was lacking. The sausages were tiny and the egg wasnot cooked all the way through

Review 44:No welcome pack in room, and gentleman (possibly owner?) not very welcoming, felt a bit of a hindrance than a paying guest, had to ask for wi-fi password, and found out on leaving there should have been details in a pack in room, which was in the attic -rooms 13 and 14 attached to main building - where dining area was, felt like it was an addition rather than part of the hotel, and although clean was a bit forgotten about - also no shampoo in bathroom. Mobile phone essential as there was none in room.

Review 45:Good location, 10 min walk into town, atmospheric property original features, breakfast good choice cereal and cooked meal to order

Review 46:No information booklet in the bedroom. Parking very tight as was the car park entrance.

Review 47:Good breakfast and pleasant staff. Nice surroundings. Very comfortable.

Review 48:This is a delightfully ancient building full of character I absolutely loved it but some might struggle with the stairs and the shower. Only for folks that like modern convenience for those who like old English quirky its perfect.

Review 49:Best bed I have slept in in a hotel for many a year. Mein Host was delightful

Review 50:Ensuite bathroom only had a hand-held shower fitting and there was no shower curtain to prevent water splashing around.

Review 51:Very convenient location for town centre. Good size room. On-site parking. Cooked to order breakfast. Friendly staff.

Review 52:Was all good really but the shower is getting a little tired!

Review 53:Easy to get to and very convenient location for the cathedral and town centre, easy walking distance. The staff were very friendly, breakfast is cooked fresh and very good quality. Also overall it was clean and tidy with Very Olde English rooms, very comfortable beds.... Loved it.

Review 54:The conversion of old buildings into hotel accommodation provided an old world level of comfort coupled with a modern level of service. Location was convenient to the town centre.

Review 55:Within the hotel itself I can't think of anything I didn't like! If pushed I'd say I would have like a newsagents or corner shop near by so I could nip out and buy s cold drink but didn't find any close by (no fault of the hotel!!)

Review 56:Arrived early for check in but still had an amazing welcome. The room I had was beautifuly clean, extremely comfortable and very quiet. Had a great nights sleep. The full English breakfast was cooked to perfection too. Location wise I was there mainly for family history research and the record office is nicely close by, a ten minute slow walk, and I mean slow as I use a walking stick. Travelled to the Theatre Royal on the Tuesdsy night, and again nice and close.

Review 57:Booked deluxe king. Had to walk up very steep narrow stairs, ceilings very low, no stand up shower, just hand held hose over 1980s bath. Appreciate it's a very old building but should have been warned about these things. Thought it was very basic room with king sized bed.

Review 58:Easy walking distance to see bury st Edmunds. Free parking. Very little traffic noise.

Review 59:The motor entrance and exit, is blind to passing traffic, suggest mirrors would help

Review 60:Quiet, comfortable and no hassle, helpful staff and all that you need

Review 61:Very small corner shower in small corner bathroom. Quite pricey.

Review 62:Convenient location within easy walking distance of town centre. Room was small with small bathroom but adequate for a one night stay. Staff friendly. Breakfast good. Adequate parking spaces.

Review 63:There was some rattling noise at night from the window panes and some other bits.

Review 64:The building is beautiful with its old beams and stone walls, and Bury St Edmunds is a lovely town.

Review 65:The outside of the building could have done with a lick of paint around building on the outside.

Review 66:We asked to stay in a quieter part of the hotel and so were given a lovely suite across the courtyard from the main building. The rooms were done out beautifully in the traditional style that we had hoped for. The lounge area was very comfortable too.

Review 67:Breakfast okay but slow service and not particularly hot.

Review 68:Nice characterful small hotel, welcoming and helpful. Pleasant room, not huge but big enough for a night or two.

Review 69:I live in the country so am not used to the traffic noise, it wasn't a motorway or anything like that but did seem to be one of the main roads into Bury. Ask for a room at the back and it's fine. No bar or evening meals served.

Review 70:owners were very helpful, great breakfast, good location

Review 71:The hotel has no twin beds, so be aware when booking. Bathrooms a little dated, although functional.

Review 72:A super breakfast and my husband was offered a coffee whilst having a cigarette outside.

Review 73:It wasn't a bad experience as we did enjoy staying there, but it would have been a slightly better experience if we had had a bath in our room as my husband was looking forward to a soak.

Review 74:Short walk into Bury, our room was very comfortable nice and peacful. breakfast was lovely served by a very polite waitress, all staff very friendly.

Review 75:I honestly have nothing to report. It was quiet out the back, perhaps a view of the Hanging gardens of Babylons would have been good.

Review 76:We liked everything. The Wifi excellent, very friendly staff. Car park good size. The room very prettily decorated. The bed very comfortable.

Review 77:There was nothing I would fault

Review 78:Super greeting upon Arriva and had been upgraded to the cottage, amazing barn conversion with kitchen, bathroom, sitting room with tv, gallery bedroom and very comfy bed, perfect to relax

Review 79:I stay all over the country and have never been so impressed with the effort put in by this hotel to ensure I had a good stay. I missed my train and so was late arriving, and the hotel called to check that everything was ok, and offered to book a taxi for me from the station. As I was too late for a restaurant in town, they provided a range of takeaway menus, and even paid for my takeaway at reception and added to the bill then brought my pizza to my room for me. The room itself was gorgeous and full of character with a good shower and comfy bed, and working wifi. Breakfast was delicious. I can't recommend it enough.

Review 80:A pleasant welcome from the staff, breakfast excellent Room clean and warm Ideal situation for the Records Office, shopping, and touring around Bury.

Review 81:An absolutely gorgeous place to stay with the nicest, most helpful and friendly staff that go that extra mile to ensure your stay is perfect. I cannot recommend The Abbey Hotel and it's staff highly enough.

Review 82:The kippers at breakfast were not as hot as we would have liked but not too cold to give us cause to complain.

Review 83:The really comfortable bed in an oaked beamed room. We could not hear any of the other guests during night, even the visitors from Liverpool who returned to the hotel in the early hours of the morning! The staff were attentive and polite and could not have done more to make our stay a pleasant one.

Review 84:The king size bed was only a 5' bed. Service was rather slow at breakfast on the second morning when the hotel was full, but was worth the wait.

Review 85:Very helpful staff.

Review 86:Couldn't seem to get any channels on the tv

Review 87:Welcoming friendly service , clean and lots of character would defo stay here again , plus was very accomadating for a young 5 year old girl . This place is run by a lovely older couple

Review 88:Nothing to report on.

Review 89:Location is just outside the town, so fairly quiet but easy to get to things. Owners really nice and helpful. Has all the charm of a small independent hotel, with lovely breakfast.

Review 90:As we stayed for 3 nights it would have been better if there had been some drawers for clothes, so that we didn't have to live out of a suitcase.

Review 91:Abbey Hotel was what it said on their website - proved to be a good choice for accommodation, staff attentiveness and location.

Review 92:Lack of bottled water in the room No long mirror Boring tea bags - pg tips are very uninspiring

Review 93:Loved the building and furnishings, thought the staff very good

Review 94:Poor sound-proofing meant that we heard some noise from the room above.

Review 95:We were upgraded to a suite, which was very comfortable. The owner went out of his way to be helpful. Breakfast was good and it was helpful to have on-site parking.

Review 96:The friendliness of the staff, the cosy room and the flexibility of making our breakfast earlier than the standard time, when we said we had to leave early

Review 97:bathroom in our room was tiny and no shower wifi signal a bit weak

Review 98:The bed and linens The owners/staff - lovely The building - oldy worldy and in style with the town

Review 99:This is not a hotel. There is no bar, no restaurant. Peculiar mismatched furniture. Basic shower room, Cheap secured soap dispensers like a 2 star hotel. Over priced for a B & B

Review 100:Not a lot

Review 101:Can't think of anything, we had a lovely time and it was a great centre for our trips around the Suffolk area.

Review 102:It was all very pleasant - perfect for the town and nice and quiet at night!

Review 103:Very small hand basin in bathroom

Review 104:Lovely town and can walk in from hotel. Everywhere to stay is expensive so on par. Lovely fresh cooked breakfast and not rushed

Review 105:The Hotel was delightful and our room was beautiful. The bed was so comfy and we both slept very well. The staff are so friendly and helpful and the breakfast is amazing.

Review 106:The shower could have been better, it needed updating.

Review 107:Friendly & Helpful, customer service. Breakfast was very good. the accommodation was of a high standard. Comfy , clean bed. Good location for shopping.

Review 108:Poor standard to shower cubicle. Cracked tile, mould stains on grouting. Cleaning solution left in wash basin could have been very dangerous to children. Windows in poor condition.

Review 109:Good breakfast, comfortable bed.

Review 110:Nothing. Hotel was really first class.

Review 111:Location. Easy access to town.

Review 112:Staff very friendly and helpful

Review 122:Everthing

Review 123:Feeling a little forced out at 10.15 by "housekeeping" when checkout was 11

Review 124:Location, friendliness of the owner, breakfast !

Review 125:Bathroom a bit small and no bath only shower

Review 126:Friendly welcome, cosy surroundings, nice stay

Review 127:The staff were very accommodating.
