Reviews for The Grange Hotel

Review 1:The Full English breakfast was very dry as if it had been stood for quite a while. The Wifi Signal didn't reach my room I asked reception to book me a taxi for the next morning and after waiting for 20 minutes I decided to call the taxi company myself to be told that nobody had actually called from reception to book the taxi in the first place.

Review 2:Old, needs some specific TLC. Shower had hair in it from previous guests, no fridge, windows not working correctly... breakfast was free, but someone needs to teach the cook how to make scrambled eggs... they aren't supposed to be like runny snot, and sausage is much tastier when it isn't overcooked.

Review 3:it was a nice cottage type and wasn't too far from our destination. We got a good last minute deal that was less than 40 pound... standard price for the room was over 100. We wouldn't stay there for 100.

Review 4:Lots of cobwebs on the ceiling, some had been there a while. Mattress on the bed was quite thin which was a little uncomfortable for me

Review 5:Lovely 'log' cabin, well decorated. Staff very friendly and helpful

Review 6:I think its a bit tired a bit worn new carpet on the stairs, some small changes in bedrooms and this could easily be a five star venue.

Review 7:It was very quiet, we ate at The Grange and the food was amazing. Even thinking about using the venue to get married there. Staff were very nice. Would stay again for sure.

Review 8:Muddy driveway and as room was outside footwear got really dirty. Also steps up to the room were slippery as it had rained and of course muddy as well !!

Review 9:Welcoming staff Great single room Bath and shower Great breakfast

Review 10:the bathroom in the no 14 was small and was cold no heater good job the weather was mild

Review 11:had a great new years eve dinner dance and casino breakfasts were very good as was the evening meal on the 30th

Review 12:The hotel is looking a little tired in places, but that certainly didn't detract from us enjoying it.

Review 13:Staff were friendly. Dinner and breakfast were excellent with first class service. Nice enclosed outdoor garden space.

Review 14:Only stayed one night, so the room booked was adequate, if staying longer may have gone for an upgrade. Evening meal and service was good as was the breakfast.

Review 15:The rooms are quite variable. We were traveling as a group and some of the rooms were much bigger than others

Review 16:Staff friendly and helpful. Meals in restaurant good value

Review 17:To start with, -We requested early check in and late check out (which was confirmed by email) when i arrived at the hotel the women on the counter was adamant that we did not request this, even after showing her the confirmation email. -Secondly, the room was tiny, the television was dated and the overall decor of the room was finished to a shabby standard. (screws on bath panel not fully screwed in, patchy paintwork etc). -The room i stayed in was £115 per night, and would say it was worth no more than £65 per night. -The breakfast was shocking, hardly any choice and was not the best quality of food. It is safe to say I would never stay at this hotel again.

Review 18:-The hotel was not to far from Bury St Edmunds town center. -The room was clean and the bed was comfy. -Free WiFi with good connection.

Review 19:Had the noisiest room i have ever stayed in! The first night sounded like bins banging together from 10pm to 11pm and drunk guests from a Christmas party outside my room in the early hours. On the 2nd night, could hear a door below constantly swinging shut as it was the kitchen and plates being stacked etc! Need to improve the sound-proofing. The hairdryer didn't work and there wasn't a bath towel left on the 2nd night even though i had indicated that i was happy to keep the same towel for both nights! Would not go there again.

Review 20:Our bathroom needed some TLC. Very water marked and shower head very scaled up and floor water marked and scaled .

Review 21:Log cabin ideal for dog as based in garden so dog could play away to his hearts content and we did not have to worry about him getting out.

Review 22:Budget double room in need of update. Shower was terrible, water dribbled from shower head, very noisey unit that altered from piping hot to Luke warm of its own accord.

Review 23:Quite warm hotel room

Review 24:The restaurant was closed There was no heating and it was freezing The TV in Room 9 is in a daft place The owner was not bothered when I cancelled my next two weeks of bookings.

Review 25:The waitress at breakfast

Review 26:The shower was poor, the nozzle was almost totally blocked and it was practically impossible to have a decent shower, either literally scalding hot or cold. It was also very muddy leading up to the room.

Review 27:The breakfast was reasonable. The room was clean and comfortable.

Review 28:I booked a twin room and mentioned this at 11 am when we arrived. We booked in at 6, the log cabin, but a double. Not worth £135. Chose to leave after speaking to management , and didn't get charged . Won't be booking again

Review 29:The cabin was freezing on arrival,I had to work out how to turn on heater which was directly over our heads when in bed which was Noisy. Only one towel, Kettle stopped working during a rain storm and I was told tea available in hotel, however the girl did get wet and brought me tea on a tray. Bed was hard. and uncomfortable (Travel Inn beds are a lot better) and there was a lack of pillows.

Review 30:Staff were lovely and helpful Breakfast was very tasty and good options

Review 31:Shabby, soulless accommodation, missing finishing touches. Sofas up and downstairs smelly and dirty. Room mix up, but very apologetic. sorted and compensated. Disappointed with the food.

Review 32:Staff were very helpful, but made errors e.g. meal orders.. Plentiful hot water, warm accommodation, clean bathroom, bedding good.

Review 33:Ancient Television 1980's? Poor internet reception in the room and carpet flooring threadbare and dirty at the edges and corners.

Review 34:The hotels position and the restaurant

Review 35:Poor welcome at desk in arrival No explanation given for the fact I asked in advance for a room in the second floor in the hotel itself I got an annex Room up a flight of outside iron steps which seemed strange

Review 36:Warm and comfortable

Review 37:meal in restuarant was DIRE! £40 down the drain but got away lightly. poor bloke on next table had to send his frozen supermarket pie back to get re nuked £11.95 what a joke.break fast was lovely ADVICE enjoy this lovely country house hotel but BRING A PACKED LUNCH

Review 38:wonderful location log cabin warm and cosy

Review 39:The hotel was long overdue for re decoration. Carpets were threadbare. My room had black marks on the walls, cracks in bathroom tiles, side panel to the bath was ill fitting and shabby, I had to get staff to vacuum up an intrusion of ladybird insects which swarmed into the room because I had to open the window for some fresh air. After you have driven from Durham to Suffolk (230 miles) you at least expect these days for the place to be comfortable and welcoming.

Review 40:The food was good and that's about it. I stayed here because my sister invited me to her golden wedding anniversary where the celebrations took place in the hotels function room which was pleasant.

Review 41:We like more water withhold shower

Review 42:While the rooms were kind of tired and in need of some tlc. They were clean and comfortable. The showers were slow but usable. The room sizes varied which added quirkiness to the tired decor. The staff were excellent as was the food. Would webstay there again most definitely.

Review 43:Decor is a bit tired but didn't detract from our stay

Review 44:Comfortable, clean family room. Good dinner with attentive service. Relaxed breakfast. Stella Black on tap in the bar was a particular bonus for me.

Review 45:The log cabin was surprisingly spacious and very comfortable. Quiet and relaxing. The breakfast was fantastic too! We would have happily stayed for a longer if our time allowed.

Review 46:The bedroom furniture (eg the sofa) could be better. No glasses and no water. Poor telephone reception and no Internet.

Review 47:The main hotel is a nice building set in beautiful gardens. The cabins are quite nice but a bit tired. The staff, mainly two young women, we're pleasant and helpful. Breakfast was very good.

Review 48:We have stayed at the grange before and have had good experiences but this time the room we were put in was very small, old fashioned, and separated from the main building so we had to go round the side of the building and up a slippery set of steep metal stairs in the rain and in the dark to get to it. The decor was a bit tired. The TV was very old and out dated. The walls were very thin so we could hear the people in the room next to us. There was carpet in the bathroom which isn't a great idea. Worst of all the the mattress we slept on was in desperate need of a replacement. You could feel all the springs sticking up and there were two big dips in the surface, so we also had a bad nights sleep. Very disappointing visit this time, we never know if we are going to enjoy our stay with you because the rooms vary dramatically.

Review 49:Some staff had a lack of customer service. The menu was limited especially the breakfast menu

Review 50:Hotel was in nice gardens and some staff were efficient and polite

Review 51:The cleaner walked straight into my room in the morning! The room had to be vacated the night before as another room had hot water problems.

Review 52:Location to Suffolk. Nice chill out surroudongs

Review 53:accommodation was OK, out in the wing. Had a storm the night I was there and could feel the wind. Rather be in the main house as that was lovely.

Review 54:good location, food and staff were great

Review 55:Breakfast was overlooked but once pointed out, this was rectified quickly and politely.

Review 56:Staff are efficient and friendly. Nothing was too much trouble.

Review 57:Inside was very tired and dated, in need of new carpets, a paint and updating. Staff although pleasant enough were very very slow and doing everything from reception to bar work. We were put in a very small room I believe should of been a single room that they had squeezed a double bed into and the buffet breakfast was like warm.

Review 58:From the outside the hotel looked lovely.

Review 59:Found the rooms a tad bit tired and it took ages to work out how the room TV worked. Watch out for rooms facing the kitchen as the extraction fans are a bit noisy.

Review 60:Nice hotel more in design of a Country House. Nice ambience offering a quiet stay with a good restaurant and bar. Room was good for our one night stop over. Guest really need a car albeit a bit out of the way with a long walk to the nearest pub/shop. Restaurant was very good and the food (Dinner and Breakfast)was excellent. Really good value for money -- would happily stay again

Review 61:The dinner - we both had to change our lst choices as no chiabatta bread available, when my partner's 2nd choice arrived it was just warm but my meat pie had to be changed as the meat in the middle was cold & my ice cream (chocolate only available) was full of ice crystals. When it came to check out, they had already put the full amount of the bill onto my credit card complete with an overpayment, although this was refunded when I queried it. We would not want to stay there again.

Review 62:Aspect of house and friendliness of the staff and the breakfast was very good - apart from the coffee and juices.

Review 63:The staff were very accommodating when it was necessary for us to change our room because my wife needed one at ground level. We had one of the log cabins - no stairs and lots of room - designed for disabled/less-abled persons. The food was excellent - in fact the best steak I have ever had, and the breakfast was really good. The grounds were delightful - a great place for a wedding!

Review 64:On a Sunday breakfast was Instructed to us to begin at 0800hrs and finish at 1000hrs, so me and the wife attended at 0850hrs thinking it would all be up and running, there was hot food placed out. So as you do at a buffet brekky you help your self, how ever once we had selected enough food to make a breakfast meal we were instructed to put it back and come back later as it wasnt ready yet. This was very unprofessional and embarrassing having to put all our food back. So bad communication from the reception regarding timings and the staff running breakfast were ok lacked some basic communication skills as I don't think English was first language. Maybe why the wife felt the way she did who knows...

Review 65:I like the room very small but cosy and very modern.

Review 66:We were in a room that was accessed by a steep "metal fire escape". There was no drawer space in the room and no shelf in the bathroom. The television worked intermittently.

Review 67:The food was good.

Review 68:Not a bad experience, but the hotel is ready for some TLC, minor points several curtain hooks were broke, hole in the wall where the tie backs were supposed to fasten and the extractor fan in the shower room did not work, we did report that. All the tables in the garden area none of the ash trays had been emptied for some time, they were all overflowing

Review 69:The location, room was alright, breakfast very good, staff polite and friendly

Review 70:The pigeons and their droppings on our car, although not sure how the owners could control this. The carpet in our bedroom was similar to that on the corridors, and obviously not designed for a bedroom. It was coarse and very painful to walk on bare-footed.

Review 71:The location in the countryside with many lovely mature trees.

Review 72:The cramped of the room & the fact that we kept hitting our heads on several places as we was in the "loft room". Not good if your 5ft 9"!! The tiny corridors & up & down stairs to get to the room was awful when you've had a drink. Not all bulbs in lights working. Mattress felt like it was 20 years old as springs kept digging in my back. Old fashioned Big TV on a stand pushed right at end of room, should of been flat screen on wall. And was told room was booked as a single occupancy (even though it had a double bed) but because my husband turned up they charged me an extra £17.50 & blamed booking.com!! I know when I booked it online it stated 2 adults & 0 children but they weren't prepared to negotiate. The room wasn't worth £82.50 let alone £100!!!

Review 73:The breakfast. And the sheet & duvet was clean.

Review 74:We had the family room. There were two double beds and would have beenbetter with one and two singles as my children are 13 and 11, boy and agirl. There was dust all over the lamps and three lights did not workwhich really did not help as the room had no actual windows in it so wasvery very dark. The beds were very uncomfortable and the heating was onat the beginning of September. No windows and 4 people sharing made itall very hot and although there was a fan it was too noisy to leave onovernight. Apart from that and a leaking shower that left you moppingup.....it was ok. To be honest very overpriced.....could have stayed inpremier inn at least twice for less money.

Review 75:Wedding we were party of was fantastic and food was wonderful

Review 76:Room 17 - accessible by steep metal staircase, no hot water, bed uncomfortable, TV didn't work. No one to handle complaint on checkout, took a week to get response

Review 77:Pleasant garden & patio Nice white towels & bedlinen Partial refund

Review 78:When we arrived we wasn't welcomed. Broken lamp shade. Shower leaked onto the floor. Recent floor work in bathroom not cleaned up afterwards. Bathroom window didn't close properly so we had various bugs in the room for example flies, moths and WASPS. Beds extremely hard so none of us had more than four hours sleep, my husband only half an hour!!!!

Review 79:The area Breakfast

Review 80:The mattress has to be replaced. The Fire escape access to the rooms is slippery, not automatically lighted and really only for back packers The dinning room tables are sticky and need a good soda scrub. The main hall needs redecorating (ceiling)

Review 81:The obliging lady receptionist The garden view at breakfast The quiet

Review 82:Very nice rooms and features to the building. Great location if you want to stay a little bit out of bury and in the countryside but a short drive to bury!

Review 83:It was a bit hot in the room but there was a fan which we used to cool the room down

Review 84:The space and comfort. The food was excellent. The staff friendly and efficient.

Review 85:Loved the whole setting, especially our little log cabin! However it is an old country house with lovely enclosed mature gardens a wildlife haven at night. Plenty of bats to feed on the wee insects and spiders that will always be willing to share your accomadation . If you are truly rural it's proper home from home. Food, service, staff, accommodation , cleanliness and value excellent!!

Review 86:The property and interior are very dated and tired, on entering one thinks omg where have we come? A vase of flowers here and there wouldn't go a miss and a bit of sprucing up is needed.

Review 87:The food was excellent. The staff were very helpful and pleasant.

Review 88:Room was cold (admittedly this was a cold snap in August and the staff did get a heater in straight away). Not enough water to run a hot bath in the evening.

Review 89:Nice location. Lovely building.

Review 90:Food not great considering we had to wait ages for our evening meal yet there were only 4 people in the restaurant all evening. The hotel needs a complete revamp

Review 91:The location

Review 92:Not a fan of the Classical music at breakfast, too slow and boring for starting the day but the food made up for it!

Review 93:Beautiful location and grounds, breakfast was very high quality food

Review 94:Nothing that I can think of.

Review 95:I think that the staff really make this place, nothing is too much trouble, fast and friendly. The room was quirky but had everything that we needed even if it was a little on the small side.

Review 96:Bed very creaky, therefore a bad night's sleep. The shower was good, but the extractor fan did not work.

Review 97:Staff friendly and prompt in dealing with requests. Grounds were lovely and it was great to sit outside after breakfast to drink tea and chill.

Review 98:Nothing to not like!!!

Review 99:Great place to stay, enjoyed the breakfast very much, didn't eat in the evenings as we prefer to go out. Stayed in the suite and it was lovely. Staff very friendly and accommodating.

Review 100:Although the room was clean it could do with updating, ie curtains, blinds and a bit of repainting and as we were in the log cabin, outside furniture could do with updating. Had buffet breakfast which was not very nice and the orange juice had gone off which the waitress did not bother replacing, she only sniffed it. Toast had not really been 'toasted'. Tea and coffee you also had to help yourself to. Considering we have had buffet breakfasts before, in other hotels they have been 10 times better. Could do with a lick of paint and new carpets. Its got lovely old fashioned wooden panelling in the restaurant, for example, but looks a bit tired as the rest of the hotel needs updating.

Review 101:Location. Comfortable bed. Clean room. Hotel is nice from the outside. Okay for our dog

Review 102:The food could of been better the mushrooms in the breakfast were slightly under done and the steak was pretty tuff. But that's the only 2 bad things I can say about the whole stay. We loved the hotel and we would def stay there again.

Review 103:We loved the location, the staff were very friendly and helpfully.

Review 104:This hotel is very tired and needs an extensive upgrade our room was nothing at all as described... a single room converted to a small d/b...bed uncomfortable.. room was hot.and very noisy...carpets stained ..walls needed painting..not value for money ..very...very disappointed..

Review 105:the breakfast was good

Review 106:No wifi in the cabin. Bed had wooden surround that was annoying and caused bruising.

Review 107:Lovely surroundings. Excellent breakfast. Staff friendly. Would stay again.

Review 108:Old fashoned and plain old bathroom, not in perfect order. The room we had hardly had any daylight.

Review 109:Beautiful old building and stately interior. Really good restaurant. Nice surroundings with many possiblities for walking and cycling.

Review 110:The surroundings were lovely although the garden could have been even better with a bit of tidying. There was nothing to complain about at all but with a bit of TLC/face lift/freshen up this could be a stunning hotel.

Review 111:Wanted a twin but had to pay £10 extra. Had the log cabin in the end. Asked for more than 2 milks and reception said she would "see what she could do"!

Review 112:Ease of access

Review 113:Beautiful gardens and outdoor terrace for evening drinks and breakfast. We were travelling with a dog and the staff had left a cushion for him to sleep on and some dog treats in the room.

Review 114:flies were in dining room.and in bedroom. staff didnt seem to look happy or seem interested in their guests. blocked drain from kitchen I assume ,meant dirty water leaking onto lawn.first room we booked the staff said was too small for a dog so they had moved us to a second choice which was up a metal staircase outside.one of the steps was broken and didnt look safe. my dog refused to climb the stairs so staff looked for nearby hotels but none available so we chose the first room. it was tiny and really hot and overlooked the kitchen.the shower temp guage fell off. it was heavy and nearly broke my husbands toe.no bin for dog poo. oovely setting and lovely old building but needs more money spent.

Review 115:free wifi was excellent compared to other hotels we had stayed in.food was very good.

Review 116:Junior suite and its furnishings were tired/dated. Photos on website appear to have been taken some years ago so was a bit disappointed there. Expected wifi and in fact couldn't get much of a mobile signal.

Review 117:Location and outside/front appearance of hotel was pleasant, quiet and leafy. Staff were helpful and respectful. Food was very good.

Review 118:Room had restricted head height.TV was an old tube model with poor picture. Bathroom was too small, no shelf, electric shower was very noisy.

Review 119:Staff were helpful

Review 120:he person that greeted us could have looked happy Disappointed that you could not order room service and the restaurant was booked because of a function so after a long journey NO food available. The shower room had black mould around the base of the shower and could have been cleaned with some neat bleach. As it was a disabled person room there was a carpet that was a trip hazard.

Review 121:breakfast

Review 122:It's absolutely lovely! It's deep in the country and down a long drive. The only noise you can hear Is the cooing of the pigeons. The garden is lovely. The patio gets the sun all day. The staff are all very friendly and helpful. The food is terrific. Our room was huge and perfect, as was the TV. There is loads of parking space. We really enjoyed our stay here and recommend it unreservedly.

Review 123:I loved the friendliness of the staff. The full English breakfast was a welcome surprise from the continental breakfast at other establishments. We left the windows open for the cool evening breeze and we're delighted with the quiet serene environment.

Review 124:Annoying struggle to park - after a long drive it was the last thing I wanted. Told to park at the back (no room) then told to park somewhere I felt the car was vunerable to damage. Asked to pay (cash) in advance before seeing room.

Review 125:Enjoyed the Log cabin accommodation - quiet and comfortable. Nice breakfast.

Review 126:The bedroom was a disaster. Harry Potter would have thought he die and gone to haven.

Review 127:nothing. Looks good on the outside, but the inside belongs to Basil Fawlty.

Review 128:Very small/taty small room. No hot water or extra pillows. Deadflies on mouldy window sill. The stairs to our room outside would becondemmed by Health and Safety, due to very slippy and rusted metalsteps. Will not recommend staying here and not worth the £73 we paid.Very dissapointed.

Review 129:Only the Entrance to foyer

Review 130:Sticky dining tables, very slow service, foreign waitress who couldn't understand English, Tea urn not working properly and tea cold, no-one at reception when booking in, television not viewable from bed, cockerel crowing very early in the morning from 3.30am onwards, no lift, not particularly clean overall. Green marks on bedding, spider and web in dining room.

Review 131:Big bedrooms, nice looking hotel.

Review 132:The room layout was not to my taste, but it was worth it to stay I'm such a great place

Review 133:Loved the charm and charasser or this place. It's was a very queries lay out to the room but that did not hinder the visit. You have to expect these things with such old buildings. The staff and service was first class. Would stay again. For the price., quality and service against its star rating I would give this a 9/10. Most people down grade places if it's not 5 star plus, yet they are not prepared to pay the price that that commands, yet expect to receive that level of service. Most times you are lucky to get what you pay for. Here we got great value for money with great service. Thank you

Review 134:When we arrived there was a disco on, as our room was right above the noise, asked for another room. Manager (?) said only room left was £64 more, saying that we hadn't been informed about the disco as our room was not above it, which it definitely was. His attitude left a lot to be desired and after having a v good stay the last time, have decided not to use the Grange again.

Review 135:Excellent location

Review 136:This is a slightly faded hotel. Stayed one night. The rest of the hotel was taken over by a wedding party, who were perfectly well behaved but left no room for anyone else. The dining room was a passage to the garden. If anyone is travelling alone, don't get a single room, particularly Room 16, which is reached by climbing a 16 step rusting fire escape on the outside of the building. Do elf and safety know?
