Reviews for Coal Miners’ Cabins
Review 1:Basic accommodation, including shared bathroom/toilet. A bit pricier than it should have been for the standard. The waste/recycling system in the breakfast area needs to be better marked.
Review 2:Cosy reception, bar and dining area; good beer selection; clean room and communal kitchen/living room; good wifi; breakfast was ok; helpful staff. OK location 30 minutes walk from town centre. The airport shuttle bus stops at the hotel
Review 3:Reception in separate building, 25 minute walk to the city centre, pretty basic breakfast with no variation, no basic items such as salt or oil in shared kitchen.
Review 4:Very friendly staff, nice bar, clean rooms and bathrooms despite being quite old. It was really low-season, so the bathrooms and kitchen were always free.
Review 5:This place is the cheapest in town but dont let that put you off it had loads going for for. The room was cosy and even though the bathrooms are shared my room was right next door so it was barely an inconvenience. Its well heated for anyone concerened about that and the water was piping hot.. The breakfast buffet was excellent and offered a wide choice. There is a large bar which due to exhausion i didnt get to enjoy but it looked atmospheric and there is a huge polar bear teddy who i used to sit with at breakfast. The staff are friendly and helpful . The hotel is at the end of the town but it was barely a 15 minute walk and i enjlyed the walk. I would not hesistate to stay here again.
Review 6:- The location was not in the center of Longyearbyen. 20 minutes by walk to the center was quite far; - the room was basic but clean and neat; - queuing for using kitchen.
Review 7:- The reception was stylish with a cute polar bear doll; - Great view towards the center of Longyearbyen; - Foods with a reasonable price.
Review 8:It's a wee bit far (20 minutes walk) from the town centre but it does mean it's nice and quiet.
Review 9:The staff were lovely, the rooms quiet and clean and the restaurant/bar has a lovely chilled out atmosphere and good food.
Review 10:It is located bit further than others but its ok to walk. Still satisfying
Review 11:Nice staff(especially cleaner), clean, quality breakfast, warm room, good kitchen, good view
Review 12:If you want the comforts and amenities of a fancier hotel, little cutesy, name brand soap bars, terry cloth bath robes and things that you're used to...honestly? Stay home. But if you want fun, unpredictable moments and stunning views that you can't see anywhere else, come to Svalbard. There's no "bad" place to stay.
Review 13:Amazing experience, not just a "hotel" but very lively, fun place with terrific food; awesome staff with young, very hip, passionate and knowledgeable, friendly personalities; rustic, authentic rooms that miners would stay in but upgraded to today's demanding guests. The accommodations are top here and Coal Miners' Cabins was great value for the money.
Review 14:very poor lighting in the rooms and breakfast area. Too many bulbs not working.
Review 15:Great location as we were visiting UNIS student so near their accomodation. Liked access to kitchen and comfortable seating.
Review 16:It's a couple km south of the town, but it's a gorgeous environment.
Review 17:The buffet breakfast is well stocked with eggs, meats, cheeses, yogourts, breaks, cereals and more. Free coffee milk and tea. The whole bar and restaurant area is great. The rooms are quiet and well heated and cleaned.
Review 18:30 min walk from the city center. A couple of shuttle service available from the hotel to the center in the evening and back at a certain time would be welcome. A return taxi fare costs almost 250 NOK and is quite expensive for 1,5 km run.
Review 19:Everything was soooo coool!
Review 20:Great staff and comfort wise, exactly what you pay for... common bathrooms in the hallway could have been a bit nicer but overall, great option for Longyearbyen.
Review 21:Nothing
Review 22:Very good value, much cheaper than other hotels in Longyearbyen. Located in a beautiful valley, in a historic coal miners' building. Shared bathroom not a problem as there are many bathrooms, never needed to wait. Very clean. Good breakfast.
Review 23:Very friendly staff, plus if you didn't want to walk into Longyearbyen in the evening, the reception doubles as a bar and restaurant. Excellent food, excellent service, excellent place!
Review 24:Bit far from centre. Lady next door had really bad cough during the night, and it was noisy.
Review 25:Free Wi-Fi, great atmosphere in the restaurant and enjoyed breakfast.
Review 26:It was so not professional the way the receptionist lady dealt with me. First, She didn't allow me to chack in at 10:00 am as the check in time should be at 3:00 pm. I got back to her by 10:00 pm after a dog sledding trip that she arranged after I asked (just to make use of time around the city), she was not there and I spent the whole night sitting on the couch in the bar. By 12:00 midnight the bar was closed and I had to be transferred to Spitsbergen hotel around 1:00 am to wait for the airport bus. The bottom line, I paid but I didn't actually check in. If I arrived early and there were no rooms available and then she left at night, that's not my mistake.Oh by the way, the dog sledding trip turned out to be fossils hunting and nothing close to huskies and wheels as I wanted. I totally liked the place but the service surprised me.
Review 27:Easy innternet access.
Review 28:Curtains... couldn't sleep too much light. Pretty much like a dorm. Far from the centre, be prepared for a 30min walk - beware its very windy & sometimes rainy in Svalbard.
Review 29:The restaurant inside the hotel is one of the best value for money in Svalbard. Clean, decent & good value for the money.
Review 30:Outstanding possition, not far from Longyearbyen center but with nice surounding. The airport bus stop in front of the hotel. Perfect personel and restaurant with lively locals and tourists, feel like to be with old friends. Just perfect!
Review 31:The wifi was not great and eventually I just gave up. Also it was a 40 minute walk from town and not sure I would have booked here if I knew that.
Review 32:The staff was friendly and helpful. It was great that there was a kitchen to use and the shower pressure was great and hot.
Review 33:Flat 5 was in disarray; doors of toilets and rooms barely closed; was hammered out of bed at 8 by builders; one of the showers completely flooded, the other ones would leave part of the floor wet (not grat for the next person going to the toilet
Review 34:Shared bathrooms. However, there were several of them, so it was not much of an inconvenience. It is commensurate with the price. It is not in the center of town but not too far with bus or taxi.
Review 35:Good value. Large room. Plentiful breakfast.
Review 36:The curtains are too thin during the summer where the sun never sets...so the room is too bright to facilitate sleeping. Also the free internet demands too frequent username and login again and again!
Review 37:Ultra-clean, friendly staff, great breakfast and dinner, overall good quality-price!
Review 38:No particular negative point.
Review 39:Friendly staff & price. Functinal accommodation with a kitchen for guests' use. Great view. (that's why I always stay in Nybyen when in Longyearbyen)
Review 40:Everything in Svalbard is expensive and as a result its hard to say this is value for money. This is basic accommodation and is about as cheap as it gets in Svalbard. Its basic and does not job for a short stay.
Review 41:- A great stay
Review 42:-Camaraderie living! -Healthy breakfast -Kitchen -Laundry room helpful especially for hikers with a powerful drying room! -Good bar for an evening drink -Useful weather info at the reception
Review 43:Midnightsun is so great (and Bright) why have curtains With "doll house" quality. Make sure to order / request extra sheets to cover Windows when midnight sun is. Otherwise room is Bright as the day! The Miners is a 20 min walk from town senter (but all the tours will pick you up for free) But if you don't like walking, and will only be in the town (no hike/tours) this can be a bit unconvinient.
Review 44:- Nice / service minded staff - Good value - Well equipt Kitchen / washing room etc (Perfect for making dinner, or preparing for a hike) - No probs With shared Baths (lockable, and shower/WC/Sink in same room) - Close to many good hiking routs/tours - Very good grill restaurant (top value) - Comfy beds but a bit small
Review 45:I booked a double bed and received two singles; renovation of our building and machine noise from 7 am; the same breakfast every day.
Review 46:Pleasant staff; comfortable bed; equipped kitchen; tasty breakfast.
Review 47:Would have been nice to have "black out" curtains on the window. It's hard for me to sleep when it's light out!
Review 48:The breakfasts were very good & WiFi was included in the room rate
Review 49:having to share a shower, not telling us that they were not open all night, having to walk outside to get to room, was not told this when booking.
Review 50:bar staff, Lloyd and Christian, lost small camera and lloyd went out of his way to help me find as I basically knew where it was..It has been found.
Review 51:It was a bit far away from downtown Longyearbyen but we knew that going into it.
Review 52:The price was very affordable compared with the alternatives. The rooms were dorm style - converted from old coal worker rooms into hotel rooms. The showers had nice hot water and there was never any problem waiting for one of the 4 bathrooms on each floor. The customer service staff was excellent and there was a free breakfast each day along with free wifi in the lounge/bar cabin.
Review 53:Curtains too thin for 24 hr daylight The distance from longyearbyen
Review 54:Basic, clean and excellent breakfast. The addition of the bar is also very good with a nice area to relax
Review 55:It's a good 30 minute walk from the town so be prepared.
Review 56:Restaurant serves good value (for Norway!) and tasty burgers, staff are exceptionally helpful, rooms are no-frills clean and nice. Booking trips is easily done from the front desk.
Review 57:Location excellent - easy walking from Nybyen into the main centre of Longyearbyen (about 20 minutes). Comfortable and very clean rooms and shared bathrooms. Rooms large. Room was very bright as curtains thin, so needed to use eyepad - but that's just me! Breakfast was excellent - large choice, very fresh and tasty. Easy access to airport - bus stops directly outside. Lots of information in reception to help with your stay and booking agency for trips etc.
Review 58:Only disadvantage is location outside Longyearbyen, but it is just 15 minutes walk. Not so big deal, but it can be little bit boring walking the route more often.
Review 59:This Guesthouse is really good choice. Very good price (for destination and in comparsion with other possibilities). Very good breakfast too - better, then I thought.
Review 60:There is no information given on check in
Review 61:Although the cabins are a 20 minute walk out of town it's a beautiful location and very easily accessible even when snowing
Review 62:This place was warm and comfortable with all the amenities you could need. The bar and restaurant was good and the breakfast they provided was one of the best we have had.
Review 63:It's a distance from the center of town (15 minutes or so). But, a taxi is cheap and all excursions pick you up at your hotel anyhow.
Review 64:Coal Miner's Cabins is a budget option that really delivers. The rooms are basic, but you ARE in the arctic. The new restaurant is pretty awesome with great burgers and a upbeat vibe. They even had gluten free rolls which was awesome for me, and something I rarely can find in NYC when I'm craving a burger!
Review 65:20-30 min to town but one straight road and organised tours pick you up anyway
Review 66:Staff were friendly, modern restaurant and bar area, free WiFi. Basic rooms as expected but comfortable
Review 67:A baby chair for breakfast would be useful
Review 68:The atmosphere in the guest house is unique. It attracts special people and treats them in the same "special" way. food at the canteen is served after 14:00 for a very reasonable price.
Review 69:Some of the rooms were a bit shabby, though they are in process of renovation and considering the wonderful job they did with the check-in/lounge area I suspect things will continually improve.
Review 70:I love that the location is at the top of the valley. These cabins are the last buildings before wilderness begins. But if you want to be near the town action, this is not the place for you.
Review 71:The only complaint is the showers in brakke 1. When I and my friends came back from our trips and more than one took a shower at the same time there was not enough hot water. Water temperature was unstable. Considering that hot water is free and never runs out in Longyearbyen, this should definitely be improved!
Review 72:One of very few affordable accomodation alternatives in Longyearbyen. Service is very good, and it is very clean. The reception area is newly redecorated and very nice. During the day this area is a cafe where you can buy tasty burgers.
Review 73:A bit long to walk down to Longyearbyen "City Centre" when it was 15 below and a gale blowing. But there are taxis so we should probaly have used them more.
Review 74:Reasonably priced Good burgers! Nice lobby/restaurant/breakfast facilities (newly renovated) Short distance to several hiking targets
Review 75:The dining area could make use of one or two chairs for babies.
Review 76:Our stay at the cabin was during the busy solar eclipse. The personal at the guesthouse made great efforts to make everybody feel welcome. Breakfast was great and most people spend long times at the comfortable dining area. Food sold at the bar after 14:00 was affordable and tasty. Even prices at the small store were more reasonable than in stores downtown. The houses have washing machines and even a dryer and using them to wash our baby's clothes was a huge benefit. We were also advised to find a cheap car rental from the local Toyota dealer which was vital to the success of our trip. We have only good words to say about this wonderful place.
Review 77:If you need to be near the shops and downtown "action" this isn't the place for you. If hou don't mind a bit of walking and being at the foot of a glacier, this is the place. Bedrooms a bit drab, after all these are work camp housing units, though they are renovating and some rooms have en suite sink.
Review 78:Location is farthest from city center, for me this was ideal as it is only a few hundred meters to be away from city lights. A good location for aurora viewing in winter season. Long walk to town, maybe 30-40 minutes, but you need the exercise anyway. Staff was awesome, breakfast great, the burgers a good bargain and the lounge a great atmosphere. Great value for the money if you don't mind living in a dorm room again.
Review 79:Leaking windows, room was freezing as minus 25 C outside and the cold air pouring into the room as window frozen partly open. Staff not really interested in problem and room thus totally overpriced. Cheaper and warmer in a decent tent in the campsite.
Review 80:Close to the mountains on the edge of town with good breakfast.
Review 81:This is an incredible destination. And the Coal Miners Cabins are a wonderful place to base the trip. My single room was spacious and spotless, there were plenty of WCs (and those were clean too), and the staff could not have been friendlier. I look forward to my next visit. My only regret is that I did not have more time on Svalbard.
Review 82:Spitsbergen Guesthouse is located at the last bus stop (from the airport).Location is very good for those that like walking. The hotel is modest but very clean. Its really nice to stay there for couple of days. Very good breakfasts and good kitchen facilities where own dinner can be prepared. Value for money !
Review 83:Block out curtains or ones tha at least close properly would make sleeping better for those affected by midnight sun.
Review 84:Svalbard, Svalbard. My heart is still there. Accom is old miners quarters and has most you need in a hostel style. It's expensive relative to other pots - but look where you are!!! Short tourist season. Brekkie OK but not sensational.
Review 85:Location is spectacular as previously stated but it's a fair hike(20min+ at a brisk pace) down to the centre of Longyearbyen for anevening meal. Then it's uphill all the way back.
Review 86:A reasonable price in a spectacular location. Friendly staff. Reasonablebreakfast buffet which is a great way to start the day. Good facilitiesfor self-catering which is a good option considering the cost of eatingout in Norway. Local Art Gallery is a couple of huts away.
Review 87:It is a little far from down town.
Review 88:It is lovely and with history as it is used to be the house for miners. the fact we saw every day reindeer in front or behind our building. The breakfast was great. Very clean shared toilet and shower.
Review 89:if you are in the second floor and you have to carry a heavy suitcase up the stair case and first you need to take off your shoes. Far from the city center.
Review 90:I love the location at the end of the Longyearbyen valley, we saw reindeer almost everyday of our stay. very quiet and peaceful. comfortable beds - clean wash rooms - very good breakfast with Caviar.
Review 91:The single rooms in House 1 don't have a sencond (fire door) which means that the noise from the corridors is not condusive to a really good night sleep.
Review 92:Staff, cleaniness, value for money, location, breakfast and meeting other travellers.
Review 93:Group coming in late & being very noisy till gone midnight. Location far from town is not very suitable for oldies like me!!!
Review 94:Friendly, very helpful staff, comfortable bed & very substantial breakfast, with opportunity to make packed lunch for small fee. Cooking facilities available. Great value.
Review 95:They made a mess with my reservation. Even though I had a whole week reserved, as a result, in the middle of the week I had to change hotel for one night
Review 96:Easyness of organization
Review 97:It is quite a distance from town. It was no problem for us, and we walk easily, however, it might have been a problem for others of less mobility. Of course, taxis are available.
Review 98:The price was lower than everywhere else in Longyearbyen.
Review 99:Nice to be in a building with some history attached to it! Could image myself as a miner.....
Review 100:bit outside town and wish we had known that the city tour collected you at the hotel!
Review 101:That the windows don't have block out curtains.
Review 102:That breakfast is included in the price. That the insulation is so good that even though the heaters were not on, it was warm enough. The duvets are light and warm.
Review 103:Great location to start hiking but quite inconvenient if you have some shopping to do: "downtown" Longyearbyen is a good 25mn walk away, at a brisk pace. Good exercise to keep fit but you do not want to forget buying salt!!!
Review 104:Typical hostel-type accommodation. Clean, functional, a bit characterless.
Review 105:Luggage storage after check out was at own risk, so did not use it. Keeping shoe outside (could provide the plastic slip on covers to use shoes indoors).
Review 106:Checked in late night and keys were in a packet in the letter box. Simple but comfortable room.
Review 107:Double room is not big, it is with 2 narrow beds. None of the room was ready by the arrival of our group (no towels, no bed linen, no even a tablet of soap, nothing...). And no clean-lady around. Breakfast is very basic and it is the same every morning. Awful coffee. And - what is most important during polar day stay - curtains permit light through, which made us impossible to sleep. Gueshouse is quite far from the city centre: it will take you about 30 min to get there.
Review 108:All we like is the price, comparing to other hotels in the city.
Review 109:Nice place to stay in a good location (outside Longyearbyen centre, but a nice walk in). Good breakfast and restaurant.
Review 110:Very friendly and helpful staff. Nice breakfast Good restaurant and bar, very cosy
Review 111:Room was small and dull.
Review 112:Well equipped kitchen if you want to cook. Restuarant very cosy. Great breakfast.
Review 113:very noisy
Review 114:Good bar close to the room
Review 115:Too far from city center by walking. Too hot in the room and no possibility to open window to refresh the air.
Review 116:Nice acqueuil, people. Free internet.
Review 117:Nothing !
Review 118:Toilet floor gets wet when people shower Stayed 3 days but had to pay for 4 nights
Review 119:Free laundry Good kitchen facilities Good breakfast
Review 120:Longyearbyen is a very special place - go there and get the northern feeling
Review 121:Shared bathroom with poor quality shower
Review 122:Great location almost out of town so you can feel the nature around
Review 123:The acoustic isolation is not so good, and also the mattress
Review 124:Great breakfast Extremely clean, even though it was a shared bathroom. Very nice!
Review 125:30 minute walk to town. Shared facilities.
Review 126:Comfortable short stay accommodation in a remote town. Wholesome restaurant on site.
Review 127:overpriced food and small offer to choose from
Review 128:the lounge and breakfast
Review 129:The restaurant menu choices are quite limited and there are no other restaurants nearby.
Review 130:Cozy rooms, clean and warm.
Review 131:Walking up all the stairs dragging your luggage!
Review 132:Wi fi Price in comparison to other hotels
Review 133:Quiet and windows that open way out.
