The Angel Inn descritpion

In beautiful rural Cumbria, this traditional pub and restaurant dates from 1611. The Angel Inn offers home-cooked meals and real ales, amongst the charming 17th-century stone buildings of Alston village.
The starting point for the scenic South Tynedale Railway, England's highest narrow gauge train line, is 5 minutes’ walk from the Angel. Village pubs and restaurants are on the doorstep.
Rooms each have a private bathroom, as well as a TV and free tea and coffee.
Providing full English breakfasts every morning, the Angel also serves hearty evening meals in the restaurant and in the quiet garden.
At about 1000 feet above sea level, Alston is the highest market town in England. The tranquil local hills are just a few minutes’ walk from the Inn, and the Coast to Coast Route and Pennine Way Walk pass through the town.

Reviews for The Angel Inn

Review 1:carpets are worn and needs a little TLC to really improve this bed and breakfast. Noisy on a saturday night until about midnight then tranquility.

Review 2:quaint little pub. location is ideal for the railway and lovely walks. Comfy bed

Review 3:The only negative was the area where we ate breakfast but that would not be enough to put us off returning. The village of Alston is delightful.

Review 4:The best bit was the bar & the food in the evenings was very good. All home cooked freshly prepared food. Excellent value for money & the sticky toffee pudding was to 'die for' (one of the few that put dates in their pudding).

Review 5:Shower was useless hardly any water coming out, floor boards moved, found nail clipping on the floor along with hair. Had to ask for fresh towels, tea, coffee etc, bed wasn't made on a daily basis. Very noisey as slept at the front of the building, traffic passing over cobbled stones meant we weren't able to leave our window open.

Review 6:food was plentiful and hot value for money

Review 7:Alston is an unspoilt town without "twee" countryside frills and The Angel is a great no nonsense town pub with friendly owners, staff and a popular following. It is good value, so not too many extras thrown in. We unexpectedly had to change our plans (weather) and the owners could not have been more helpful

Review 8:Television in the room didn't have a very good reception and the room could do with some updating, carpet was a trip hazard!

Review 9:Lovely atmosphere in the pub and staff were friendly and very helpful, meals both breakfast and evening meal were delicious.

Review 10:Noisy plumbing , generally in need of updating carpets etc , ok for the price food good , just one night stop though

Review 11:Staff pleaseant , central location

Review 12:You are above a pub so expect noise.

Review 13:For the price you pay it is good value. Don't expect 5 star standards and be realistic in remembering that it's a B&B in a rural location and does the job it sets out to do and does it well.

Review 14:The shower head needs fixing.

Review 15:Friendly staff especially Kelly & Jody who had just lost her horse and so did really well making small talk with her customers. Great banter from Ken the landlord. Everyone made us feel at home. The food was very good and cooked by three sisters. Ken even fished for trout on our last night and served it up for our evening meal. It was to die for! Blooming good Breakfast which was cooked by Most often by Ken himself and once by Laura. Cannot fault it. :)

Review 16:I have no complaints to make !

Review 17:The location was very convenient, staff were very attentive and pleasant and the downstairs bar was very relaxing with its historic timber beams and real fire. I particularly liked the paintings on the walls especially the hoopoe !

Review 18:Small tv in room which we feel would be better situated on the wall in front of bed.

Review 19:The staff were very friendly and helpful. Our evening meal was great and plenty to eat at breakfast.

Review 20:Room a little tired and in need of some tlc. But worth what we paid!

Review 21:landlord Ken was friendly and helpful the evening meal was fab and a good breakfast in morning.

Review 22:The room was so diry hairs in the shower and smear marks on shower there was tablets in bin which haven't been emptied the kettle was supposed to be white it was black there wa dust every where I have pictures on here it said it was19 mile it is actually 26 mils

Review 23:Nothing

Review 24:We ate in the evening and the meal was disapointing but breakfast was good. Beds could have been more comfortable and this would have made a big difference.

Review 25:Value for money and the beer was good

Review 26:Having to travel 2 hours home on my motorbike in non stop heavy rain.

Review 27:Ken and his staff great hosts. Great big breakfast which I failed to finish due to a cracking hangover.

Review 28:The bed was very noisy, as was the road outside the window

Review 29:Everything but the bed in room 3, with a special mention for the quality and size of the breakfast.

Review 30:The only slight problem was the car park out the back which was very tight.

Review 31:I liked the location, the fact that it is a pub doing food ,the breakfast was very good and large,it keeps you going most of the day.The staff put themselves out as we needed early breakfasts and they did them.

Review 32:no complaints at all

Review 33:Stayed for one night sat 11th Oct we were showed our room on arrival the staff and owner made us very welcome, room was very comfortable, the food is fantastic, the surrounding areas for drinks and food were OK but the angel inn we found more value for money and a lot more busier, we will definitely return.

Review 34:Lumpy mattress and carpet in our room needed a vacuum. Noisy plumbing!

Review 35:Perfect location on C2C, great food and great beer. Staff and owner could not have been more welcoming and helpful. Roaring fire- the best in Alston. Great breakfast, basic bedrooms. We will return!

Review 36:The cleanliness was VERY poor, no hoovered carpets, thread worn & stained.TV didn't work. The dining table was in a VERY poor state, no tablecloth & badly taken care of. Chipped milk jug. I will NOT been visiting again & will NOT recommend. You need to check this place out. We only stayed one night.

Review 38:Pub closed on arrival - 6pm. Carpet on the stairs extremely worn and dirty.

Review 39:Breakfast was superb but extremely large - beware !. Bar food good quality, reasonably priced , large portions. Two real ales on tap. Car park available at rear. Room comfortable and clean. Very friendly staff and locals.

Review 48:Shabby rooms (poorly furnished) Difficulty sleeping due to noise / smell of cigarettes through window

Review 49:Friendly staff Great location Big breakfast Reasonable price

Review 50:The proprieter has not responded to my emails requesting a refund of the additional cost we incurred after the double booking meant we had to stay elsewhere. Very unimpressed by this.

Review 51:The booking was easy enough. When we arrived and the staff member found we were double booked, she found us somewhere else to stay in the town - she did well.

Review 52:I can't think of many redeeming features. The welcome, décor, overall cleanliness and breakfast were all below par. The TV was tiny.

Review 53:The bathroom and bed linen were clean.

Review 54:Noisy at night as locals were outside till late. We were awake anyway but some people may not be..

Review 55:Breakfast, location, staff and the fact it was a proper pub.

Review 56:Great character pub to stay in, built in 1611 with some history attached (ask the owner). I was exploring Hadrians Wall and the location was close enough for this.

Review 119:Excellent cooked breakfast, everyone is really friendly, a proper pub in a lovely town. Good to get a chilli that has a bit of heat as well, the food was top rate. Definitely stop here again.

Review 120:The room had been used for pets and there was pet hair on the carpets, the noise from the next doors telly was very loud. Breakfast was not in the same room as the bar but a small side room that could do with a good clean and paint

Review 121:beer garden and the food was really good. The landlord was very helpful

Review 122:Hotel locked when we arrived Cleanliness very poor and smell of drains. Carpets dirty and unevenly laid. Cramped and poor en suite. Very poor value for money; would only have been acceptable is much cheaper. Put off having our evening meal there because of smell and general air of shabbiness. The whole place needs many improvements. Our wash room light was flickering on and off and we had to ask for it to be changed.

Review 123:Landlord friendly. Other occupants pleasant company at breakfast. Breakfast good.

Review 124:Just a few minor negatives. The TV was rather old and difficult to work, there were some strange noises from the plumbing every time bathroom water was used and the noise was a touch boisterous from the downstairs lounge late at night.

Review 125:The staff were very friendly and accommodating, given my late arrivals and early schedule, and the full English breakfast was delicious but huge so I had to ask for less on the second day! Wi-Fi was very good and the location was perfect.

Review 126:Rooms were basic but clean. Meals were huge and very very reasonable. Staff were very good, very accommodating, pleasant and relaxed creating a good atmosphere

Review 127:Being an old building the floorboards ect. creak terribly, so it is noisy throughout the night. Also the water runs through some sort of saniflow system, so if you turn on a tap, flush the toilet or God forbid have a shower, the noise is horrendous.......really, really horrendous.

Review 128:Staff were friendly. Location.

Review 129:The room was a bit small and needed a little decorating. The whole pub needed some decorating.
