Reviews for Lovelady Shield Country House
Review 1:a little music in the bar would have been great but understandably its a quiet venue which is why it is so lovely and unique
Review 2:amazing views, top quality food and lovely room. also very friendly staff. nice quiet new years eve away.
Review 3:Poor matress. We could hear the boiler working. Overall the room was generally very tried and below expectations
Review 4:. Nice location friendly staff Good breakfast.
Review 5:Definite bait and switch attempt on check-in. Booked a superior room, was shown to a standard room on check-in. Luckily I had seen a prior review about the same thing, so I had photo's from booking.com. After a bit of a fuss, nite manager gave us the room we had booked.
Review 6:Breakfast, and breakfast staff, were fantastic.
Review 7:The room I stayed in was shocking for £110. There was no television, bedside lamp, I had to use the torch on my phone once I had switched off the light. The room was not the cleanest
Review 8:The staff and breakfast were very good
Review 9:The room was dated, a bit shabby and basic, not at all like the one in the photo which is obviously the most expensive. However, the price difference isn't that great so the quality gap shouldn't be either. No remote for TV. With a lick of paint and some new bedroom furniture this hotel could be right up there with the best in this class. As it is, it's a bit over priced and I've stayed in nicer for less money.
Review 10:The location and building were beautiful. Helpful friendly staff, Breakfasts were good though limited for vegetarians.
Review 11:Our room was small..an attic room not like those on web site...and the bed was small and not particularly comfortable..but ok..not the luxurious room one is led to expect from the web site..Dinner somewhat over priced but served in stylish surroundings by very friendly staff..Exterior is being neglected..garden is becoming overgrown..drive rutted with potholes..window frames on outside rotting..It does not create a good impression on arrival..but theinterior and standards of service compensated for this.Dinner menu limited and does not change from day to day..
Review 12:Elegantly and comfortably furnished...staff exceptionally friendly and helpful..Food excellent particularly the breakfast
Review 13:Although the food in the restaurant was good, it was very over-priced. Also the decorative order of the whole building is poor. In my room the paper was peeling from the ceiling and the sealant in the shower was blackened.
Review 14:The location is beautiful.
Review 15:Bar could do with some beers on tap and the fridge must have been off as bottled beer was served warm.
Review 16:Just the right distance away from Alston for a lovely walk along the riverside to the town for lunch and back again. One of the only pet friendly places we could find in the area. Superb food.
Review 17:Bedroom number 16 was short of furniture and in need of decoration. The menu was somewhat pretentious and over priced.
Review 18:The grounds were natural and it was great seeing a red squirrel.
Review 19:Staff very obliging &friendly. No expectation to join celebrations happening just allowed our privacy with comfort. Meals well worthy of the aa stars. Will revisit.
Review 20:The double room was small, more like a bedroom at home size, and nothing like the room you showed as a "standard Double" on your site
Review 21:Food was excellent
Review 22:We thought the room we were in for the evening ( 7) was rather 'tired' and was quite small. Really needs a bit of attention!
Review 23:The location is stunning A real country house feel to it Cosy bar and lounges with log fires burning Staff were very welcoming and friendly
Review 24:Access road to the hotel had one or two pot holes which could have caused damage to car suspensions.
Review 25:Good walks available, nearby museum & a pleasant drive to nearest town. Friendly staff, good chefs. Nice retreat.
Review 26:We stayed in one of the cottages which was absolutely fantastic. The breakfast was also very good.
Review 27:Accommodating staff, beautiful setting, and all round great accommodation and very good breakfast.

Review 46:Very peaceful surroundings and plenty of space inside the hotel to relax
Review 47:Food was expensive ish
Review 48:The setting was really peaceful and comfortable. Everything was very good quality and the food was full of natural flavour and extremely well cooked.
Review 49:gourmet meal on offer on Sunday night. Didn't have it as quite expensive and did'nt feel could eat that much! Would have liked alternative option of one or two courses. Think they do that option on other nights. Staff helpful offering advice as to where to eat in town.
Review 50:Lovely setting, comfortable, quiet, friendly, helpful staff. Beautiful walks on doorstop with winding river in valley surrounded by hills and only 2 miles from town.
Review 51:Would be nice if they had a cheaper menu in hotel to suit families.
Review 52:Cottage was beautiful. Restaurant was excellent. Cottage was well equipped. DVDs available from hotel to borrow. Staff friendly and helpful.
Review 53:We loved the genteel country house feel of Lovelady Shield. We were warmly greeted on arrival and appreciated the open fire in one of the snug lounge areas. The special New Years Day brunch was spectacular and it was refreshing to enjoy a leisurely morning meal without being rushed away. The setting has a wild beauty, the long drive takes you over the quaint bridge and the river Nent runs directly in front of the house. We will definitely return.
Review 54:Room not cleaned because we took key out with us. No master keys, never known that being staying hotels for over 30 years never happened.
Review 55:Breakfast
Review 56:Real fires, fab food, quiet .
Review 57:Drinks prices very expensive and breakfast was appalling. Breakfast staff need more training on service also.
Review 58:Room was nice and the fire was quaint.
