Reviews for Angel Hotel

Review 1:The restaurant (evenings) is dreadful. We had to send back three of the dishes served as they were inedible. In the morning when we complained we were told that the "chef" had been in post 11 years and that there were few complaints. If that is the case then we must have eaten on a bad night !!!! The menu is lack lustre and poor value for money and the wine list poorly sourced and hugely overpriced. Our view is that unless the management recognise the shortcomings of the restaurant then it will remain a blot on the landscape of what is otherwise a good hotel. Maison Bleu just around the corner is by comparison wonderful food and great value and Madam could tell the Angel restaurant a thing or two about wine lists. Sadly I suspect our complaint will fall on deaf ears as it was evident to us that the manager is incapable of accepting constructive criticism.

Review 2:Staff in hotel friendly and provided good service. The breakfast is excellent.

Review 3:Hotel was soul-less. Staff pleasant but lacking any sense of enthusiasm. Staff description of complimentary items ludicrous when they are being paid for. Restaurant lacks ambiance. Quality of meal certainly not up to standard described.

Review 4:An overnight get away but disappointed with misrepresentation in Bookings.com description.

Review 5:Nothing not to like!

Review 6:The Deluxe Impressions room was stunning, excellent food in the restaurant, the Vault had a lovely atmosphere, very helpful staff, no outside noise heard from our room. Loved it!

Review 7:The rooms are amazing, especially those at the front. We have stayed several times and have never been disappointed. Service is second to none and the food in the restaurant is very good value for money.

Review 8:Having quiet coffee in fireside lounge we were overwhelmed by a party (seemed to be local people) celebrating a birthday with professional photographer in tow - leaning over us to take photos by fireside, conversing very loudly (virtually shouting) and acting in disruptive manner. Arguably not hotel's fault per se but perhaps management could have asked them to show a little respect for resident hotel guests. The room was very poorly lit. Impossible to read a book, newspaper, or even adjust the heating temperature. A full length mirror would also have been good. No view at all from window due to frosted glass.

Review 9:Staff friendly and helpful. Attended to luggage and parking promptly and efficiently. Excellent breakfast and comfortable room.

Review 10:The room was very clean with the exception of the room telephone which had a thick layer of dust on it.

Review 11:Spacious room.the staff were marvelous, the facilities very good.

Review 12:The bed was extremely uncomfortable, the room was cold, the bathroom was not very clean and looking a bit tired. The first room they tried to put us in was right next to the road with cars driving right past the window. There was only one tea bag and one coffee sachet. No decaff tea or coffee. Not at all good value for money. Won't be staying there again.

Review 13:Both of the rooms that we took were very tired and in need of a complete overhall. The curtains in one room were so old that they were torn and threadbare, and the window rattled in the wind and was draughty.

Review 14:Fabulous central location with friendly and helpful staff. Our luggage and the parking of the car were efficiently sorted out by the staff. The lounge area was nice. We didn't eat in the restaurant so can't comment on that but it looked nice.

Review 15:The room we had was very dimply lit and had virtually no natural light with only a view of some scaffolding and other rooms which was somewhat surprising as we paid a premium price for a "Premier Double" room. The restaurant was exceptionally good but £65 per head including wine was somewhat pricy. The bar at the hotel was closed during our stay which although not a major problem did detract from the overall stay.

Review 16:The Angel is in a great location and the hotel is very nicely furnished and comfortable.

Review 17:Excellent efficient, helpful staff. Welcoming hotel, with good service from all staff. Room cleanliness and comfort first class. Good quality meals/food both from the restaurant and bar sandwiches.

Review 18:I found the price of Breakfast a little high and not being able to get a simple meal over Christmas albeit the menus were lovely

Review 19:The staff were all lovely and Great with my dog Buffy who was very at home there The food was great and plenty of it

Review 20:For over £200 per night I would have liked the TVs to have worked properly it would not change channel. The sink taps had parts missing and one dropped off as I tried to turn it on. Tin bath might have looked nice but very uncomfortable. Alex Politzi would have a field day with the poor and tired decor. Inadequate parking. Worth £100 per night not the £238 we paid.

Review 21:Great location, great staff

Review 22:calling reception at 2.30 in the morning asking them to move and stop guests from smoking and talking directly under our window (in the courtyard). After that we were kept awake from the sound of the aircondition plant for the remaing part of the night. If i could have collected my car i would have travelled home.

Review 23:location and parking

Review 24:The wing bar seemed understaffed and we had to wait a while.... But gave us time to take in the very quirky little details, very cool indeed!!

Review 25:Amazing place, the bar is very cool and food was lush

Review 26:couldn't get a table in the cellar bar for a drink and we were not asked at check in if we wanted to eat in the restaurant and we couldn't book a table for dinner.

Review 27:location was great, hotel was comfortable and festive...

Review 28:To be picky the breakfast was a little bit of a let down, didn't quite measure up to the rest of the experience.

Review 29:Great location, very helpful and friendly staff. Basement cocktail bar is a funky space (but they could do with a better cocktail list) but still worth a visit.

Review 30:My television had scrambled sound and vision so most channels could not be watched nor could I get radio 4. The second night they had fixed it but not permanently as it was wrong again the next morning. My room cost £158 but I would have paid an extra £7 at least for breakfast. There was real coffee in the room but no instant and I didn't realise this until it was too late to go out to the shops. Beer was provided which I didn't need. There were central heating radiators but it was not possible to make them come on. They must have been controlled by a central thermostat because they came on at about 10am the next day when it wasn't cold.

Review 31:Beautiful view of both abbeys. Very comfortable furniture. Very helpful cleaning ladies.

Review 32:No hotel bar. Wingspan bar in cellar closed two of the three nights we stayed.

Review 33:Excellent location opposite the Abbey and Gardens. Quiet and comfortable room.

Review 34:Loved everything!

Review 35:The Angel hotel was amazing. The location was perfect and bury is such a lovely city especially with the gardens in front of the hotel. The hotel staff even parked the car for us and carried out luggage to and from the car and rooms. Definitely going back.

Review 36:The bar downstairs was a bit of a let down with no atmosphere and no nibbles! Strange. We would have stayed longer otherwise. The breakfast in room choice was very limited which was a real shame.

Review 37:Absolutely beautiful room, lovely warm reception and nice and unobtrusive but attentive throughout.

Review 38:Wasn't in main building but in an adjoining building . Room had stairs leading into bathroom which was loose & dangerous . Carpet was grubby & old. Room did not have enough light therefore was dark constantly - could apply make up in any room or do my hair due to poor light . Pillows were flat & had a duvet which I didn't think was hygienic , View from window haf scaffolding everywhere - felt like I was in the basement on a building site. All in all very disappointed as this was advertised as a premier room, but in fact was a dark depressing grubby room .

Review 39:The bathroom was clean but in need of decorating. Therefore I think the price was a bit high.

Review 40:Very friendly and helpful staff. Very welcoming. The hotel was excellenty poitioned for a visit to the Cathedral, the abbey gardens, the town centre, the apex and the brewery.

Review 41:Dining room lacks fell, it's too stark and out of context with the rest of the building.Somewhat noisy, lack of carpet?

Review 42:Ambiance, decore, facilities and location.

Review 43:Bedroom was good but bit decor needed some attention

Review 44:Excellent position in town. Breakfast served at table instead of dreaded buffet. Quirky interior design brilliant

Review 45:The noisy old car who was parked in front of our door room.

Review 46:The water power of the shower, food and the efficiency of the reception and car driver people.

Review 47:Appalling treamentioned and attitude of Manager? Woman at desk who wasexplaining why we couldn't have a late check out, why wecouldn't have our car parked at the hotel. It was all the weddingthey were having. It appeared that the wedding overran any other guestsconsiderations

Review 48:Position opportunity Cathedral good food clean, comfortable room

Review 49:It said on the booking .com website that breakfast was included. The hotel advised me on checking in that it was not included.

Review 50:Staff were very friendly and could not assist enough. Parking attendants were very courteous.

Review 51:Staff weren't particularly friendly and the restaurant was over priced. Very noisy 'traffic sounds' in the bedroom all night.

Review 52:Fantastic location and a lovely building.

Review 53:Not a four star hotel at all. Furniture in rooms very dated understand it's an old building but very old cheap furnishings

Review 54:The staff were excellent, location good.

Review 55:An absolutely amazing hotel. The room was quirky, clean, quiet and so comfortable. The staff were friendly and helpful. The hotel is unique, you'll find something different around every corner. The Wingspan bar is awesome. I can't wait to go back!

Review 56:Couldn't get drink in the bar even when empty table right in front of us . He said it was for four people even though two had just left! For £250.00 I expect more ruined otherwise lovely stay.

Review 57:Lovely room all staff bar one excellent especially porters and car parkers who were brilliant .

Review 58:We booked the coach house which conjures up a rather romantic image. Sadly it was no more than a motel room situated on the ground floor immediately next to the main door. This meant people walking past our room window day and night. As there is a blind at the window you have to position the blind so it's almost closed which leaves a very dark dismal room with no view at all. The bed was old and you could feel the springs so I was given a blanket to lie on to help make it more comfortable. I was also shocked to find no pillow protectors on the pillows and the pillows were stained. I noticed this as the pillows smelt gross. Beware garlic bread if you don't like raw garlic pieces stuck on top of bread.

Review 59:Room service was very swift and efficient. Although I feel expensive, the breakfast brought to my room was well cooked, not greasy. Was surprised no fresh fruit or cereal was available so £11 is just for a cooked breakfast, toast and fruit juice, tea or coffee. The staff were polite and friendly. Although the food was good I did struggle the second night choosing my food as it was the same menue as previous day. I guess just a bit too fancy and rich for me.

Review 60:Long corridors with multiple sets of steps and directions on walls designed to confuse the innocent . . . quirky!

Review 61:Extremely helpful, friendly staff. Nothing too much trouble for the lovely chap who parked our car and carried bags. Restaurant service speedy for both dinner and breakfast; food delicious. Room service amazing; smoked salmon and cream cheese sandwich served with a side order of chips . . . WOW! Fabulous location with beautiful Abbey Gardens opposite.

Review 62:Room 102 was so noisy, due to a. Heating fan, or something else, we could not sleep, so we're moved to another room to sleep, very disappointing.

Review 63:The service, location and decor were outstanding.

Review 64:The wifi didn't work in 5 out of 6 of our party's rooms. The television didn't work in one. The restaurant bar/staff were nice but seemed very disorganised and slow to respond. The breakfast took 40 minutes to arrive and was well below the quality one would expect for £11 per head it cost for a full English.

Review 65:Great location, close to where we had business. Lovely aesthetic and polite and helpful hotel staff.

Review 66:The bedroom. We booked the coach house, however had a room with bathroom fitted for a person with disabilities, on the ground floor of the main hotel. The room was comfortable but very tired and appeared to back directly onto a lane which had cars and at one point the dustbin lorry drive down.

Review 67:The general areas of the hotel. The gentleman who parked our car and showed us to our room was polite and friendly

Review 68:unfortunately we had cold water on the last day stay of our stay in the morning. It was a while before it was mended over an hour.We understand these things happen. The staff were very apologetic and helpful

Review 69:You can't keep the water in the basin (apparently intentional). If you wet shave, bring a bowl...

Review 70:Beautifully updated hotel; highly efficient and friendly well-trained staff. Parking all sorted out for you and right in the middle of Bury, by all the nicest shops.

Review 71:The room needed a refurb has started to look tired and although not extortionate the hotel isn't cheaper either and should be in a better condition considering.

Review 72:Staff are always lovely and friendly!

Review 73:Poor service (had to enquire when drinks would arrive after 10 min waiting). Others also observed with the same issue. A hotel with little competition that has become complacent.

Review 74:Room and general hotel décor is good

Review 75:The building itself is very quirky, with lots of stairs and squeaky floor boards.

Review 76:The location of the hotel was perfect as we were attending a wedding at Hengrave Hall which was very close. Also the Abbey directly across the street was amazing.

Review 77:I was their on the eve of my wedding and had there best suite. Bathroom was nice but the room was so small! The front desk staff were robotic and rude. Not friendly and did NOTHING to recognise my wedding or a hotel full of my guests. They charge for every little thing and got our breakfast wrong and was cold!

Review 78:Outside of building is beautiful. In a central location.

Review 79:Rather disappointed with the breakfast.

Review 80:The location is superb. The staff very friendly and helpful. Guest parking, Comfortable rooms and very large bathroom with nice products and towelling robes

Review 81:woken up early on first morning with "room Service" breakfast which had not been ordered. Then some loud discussions outside ( via radio?) before it was delivered to another room.

Review 82:Good central location, assistance with parking

Review 83:room key sticking in lock.breakfast was lukewarm and overcooked. An order for boiled egg was slow to arrive and did not come in a proper eggcup.

Review 84:valet parking.Cellar bar.Lounge.

Review 85:room was clean but a bit no frills, looked like a travelodge and with view of a car park for the price breakfast should have been included (it wasn't)

Review 86:delicious and large breakfast, friendly waiting staff, comfortable bed

Review 87:Room was not really worth the money. Decor was poor and the room needs urgent uplifting. Would have thought with the price that a breakfast could have been thrown in as is the case in other hotels.

Review 88:Well placed hotel and staff friendly.

Review 89:The lighting in the room was not good as the lamp near the mirror wasn't adjustable. I think it's broken

Review 90:We loved the location the food and particularly the cool bar downstairs

Review 91:Parking is a problem as the hotel only has a small car park and traffic wardens patrol outside in the public area. The Angel is a lovely hotel but my visit was spoiled by the blatant opportunism of adding an "optional" service charge to my bill, with several people behind me at checkout and carrying three bags I just could not be bothered to complain at the time. If I want to leave a tip I will do so at the time - this made my blood boil.

Review 92:Location, ambiance, food

Review 93:I thought the room was a bit basic for a 4 star hotel. The bathroom was very basic. Also the sash window in the room wouldn't stay open so it was quite stuffy.

Review 94:The service was good The valet parking was good

Review 95:Small, dark, pokey room at the back of the hotel. We paid a premium price for the room which didn't equate to what was on offer.

Review 96:Staff were friendly and helpful. Breakfast was wonderful and good value.

Review 97:Staff are polite but under-trained and there do appear to be language communication difficulties. Sure it could easily be resolved.

Review 98:Great location is main advantage- great restaurants nearby.

Review 99:Would have preferred a bar instead of waiters serving drinks in lounge area.

Review 100:Brilliant service on arrival by all the staff, spotlessly clean and spacious room with large comfortable bed, high standard of food.

Review 101:I opted for a starter and pudding for dinner. The pudding was nice but my starter was so small I could barely see it.

Review 102:Excellent staff, quiet room. My husband enjoyed an excellent dinner

Review 103:Premium room was far too small for the price. Although staff explained this was due to building layout, and other rooms were larger, room 125 and similar should not be as premium. Also a 1 hour extension to check out should be gratis, not £20. Management policy therefore seems greedy at this hotel.

Review 104:Location is excellent and cellar bar amazing.

Review 105:Dark, dingy room. View onto an internal courtyard. No sun. Quiet though!Small bathroom, one sink and mirror. Had to take it in turns withhusband to get ready to go out which delayed things. Nice lounge areawith open fire, big sofas etc but hopeless trying to get a drink there -multiple trips to the desk and a wait of at least 30 mins for the waiterto deliver.

Review 106:Very friendly, efficient car park/porter chap. Quiet room.Reasonably good shower but combined with bath. Memories of my weddingnight, the last time we stayed! I didn't expect the bridal suite butour room was awful even though I paid more to stay in the originalbuilding - I had hoped for a view out onto Angel Hill at least.

Review 107:Constant noise through the night from the air-conditioning or kitchen extractors immediately below our bedroom window (Rm 463). Had a bad nights sleep as a result. Would not want that room again. Had to disperse about a dozen bluebottles trapped in the bathroom window upon arrival. Not nice.

Review 108:Car parking facility, central position of hotel. Relative luxury and comfort.

Review 109:Endless switching of cars as car park too small. Food is nouveau cuisine and very expensive. Rather pretentious descriptions, although taste was very good.

Review 110:Location and dining areas. Our room was a very long walk, no lifts.

Review 111:Room 116, was noisy in as much as an annoying humming noise was evident as soon as we went to bed. This did not make for a good nights sleep. The noise which was perhaps kitchen fans or heating, was reported, and without any delay we were upgraded to Room 231, what a room this was. Deep copper bath, huge walk in shower, and massive bed with enough cushions and pillows to smother in. Excellent service.

Review 112:Very quirky hotel, excellent mixture of new and old. Food excellent although a little pricey. Wingspan cellar bar was a brilliant feature, nice and secluded, ability to chat over very low background music, and cocktails to boot !

Review 113:There was nothing we didn't like.

Review 114:The staff were wonderful, the Hotel was lovely, and I would recommend this to anyone. Can't wait for a reason to go back!

Review 115:Being put in the rooms at the top of the hotel with no lift. Room 462 no taste and too small, complete lack of taste in comparison to those we have stayed in previously.

Review 116:Service, staff

Review 117:The staff were not experienced and they were not the standard we have had before in this hotel. We had a cleaner open the door at 8 am without knocking at the door ! The same cleaner had started cleaning the room before we had checked out and was really rude when we came back to our room 10 minutes late.

Review 118:The position is very nice

Review 119:This hotel requires a major makeover. The ground floor common areas, stairs and lounge were very tired. No lift. Similarly the bedroom was in a poor state of repair with the en suite bathroom in a disgraceful state. Room 465 if the management want to check it out. Have stayed here on several occasions over the years but will source another hotel on my next visit to Bury St Edmunds. Was definitely not value for money, Disappointed.

Review 120:The food in the restaurant though expensive was very good. The check in and check out staff were friendly and efficient.

Review 121:As with most hotels, they leave it to the guests to point out what is not working in the room. In this case, it is that the window will not open due to a broken sash and the curtains are difficult to open / close due to a faulty curtain cord. I do wish hotels routinely checked everything worked - it was quite hot in that room as clearly these things are not going to get fixed on a Sunday evening.

Review 122:Overall the hotel is very comfortable and the breakfast is superb. The location is wonderful and the staff very helpful and friendly. This time we also entertained relatives to dinner which was lovely, although the dairy free options were basically leaving out anything with dairy from the main menu, which left the dishes a bit short on a sauce.

Review 123:Not getting access to room until the afternoon. Needed to be dressed for function and had to change in toilets due to no access

Review 124:the room and little personal touches

Review 125:Room just OK.. clean but seen better days. Terrible decor when they have tried to modernise an old and charming hotel instead of refurbishing it in keeping... and no staff member should query when two women want to share a bed, not once but twice, I am not touchy but some couples might have been - very.

Review 126:Pleasing staff attitude.. everyone helpful and pleasant.

Review 127:Really liked the hotel, it was in a great location opposite the gorgeous park, and the food was amazing; we had lunch one day (in the lounge area) and breakfast the following morning (delivered to our room as the dog wasnt allowed in the restaurant).

Review 128:Downside to good view from front bedroom: traffic noise at night. Bathroom could do with a refresh. Quirky Subterranean bar might be OK for Bury hipsters, not OK for me. Continental breakfast is served, and not buffet-style - thus it all comes at once and the toast gets cold.

Review 129:Surprisingly large bedroom, good views. Efficient, friendly, attentive staff. Interesting decor in public areas.

Review 130:Room too hot, noise around central courtyard area (late at night and early morning) very soft bed, expensive drinks

Review 131:Decor, friendly staff, lovely location, parking.

Review 132:Breakfast staff on the Saturday morning - very rushed affair. All food ordered came at once (yogurt AND cooked breakfast!) although tea, coffee and toast came after. Felt as if we were an inconvenience. However Sunday breakfast staff excellent.

Review 133:Food delicious. Staff very friendly.

Review 134:No problems at all

Review 135:This hotel is located in the very centre of Bury, close to shops, restaurants, Abbey, famous gardens - you couldn't have a more convenient location.

Review 136:The staff were exceptionally helpful and very approachable. The room was spacious and clean. The food was delicious, I would definitely be visiting again and would recommend this hotel to anyone.

Review 137:We did find so many of the chairs/settees in the lounge were most uncomfortable for people like us ...... 5ft 6 and under

Review 138:We liked the location so close to everything that bury has to offer.....we liked the attentiveness of all the staff who looked after us in a most welcoming manner

Review 139:Some staff were a little snooty, also we would have expected breakfast to be included for the price we paid. The room was very basic, no dressing gowns either which was disappointing.

Review 140:The bar area was nice

Review 141:Room was noisy as it faced the front ( street and car park ) and sash windows rattled Room needs re furbishing so not the BEST value for money Light bulbs not working ( two ) and paper off the wall

Review 142:Convenient location and the staff were really great and helpful
