Reviews for The Plough

Review 1:Unfortunately the electric shower didnt work in my room so I had to go to another hotel to get washed! Heating was also broken although was kindly given a little electric heater for room. Had several problems trying to pay for the room also as their card machine was broken, and took several attempts for them to process a payment over the phone after my stay. Kettles in the rooms are coffee machines and don't heat water up enough to make a hot cup of tea. A lovely looking place with nice staff but wouldn't stay here again.

Review 2:The location was fabulous right next to the gardens and rooms were gorgeous and modern. Sfaff very nice and breakfasts good.

Review 3:Staff could be better trained in serving cocktails behind the bar as when we asked for a simple kirk royal they passed the order over until someone new how to make it so a little disappointing as it is a nice modern bar.

Review 4:Stayed at the Plough before and its by far the nicest hotel in Alnwick we have stayed at. Staff our lovely and rooms are very clean and comfortable, bar is very nice too.

Review 5:No heating, boiler broken but we did get a discount and offers of an upgrade on a subsequent visit. The hotel did offer fan heaters for the bedrooms but the lounge and breakfast area was cool!

Review 6:Lovely room small but comfortable and very clean. Home made cookies delivered to the room - a nice touch! An excellent breakfast on offer with many choices.

Review 7:Car park entrance is a little tight to get through the archway as its an old coaching inn. Our car is quite wide so a bit hairy. More shelf space in bathroom for your toiletries would be welcome as there is no other storage in there even for the towels. Very small points however.

Review 8:The attention to detail in the rooms. Complimentary biscuits and crisps, water etc. Breakfasts were very good too. The staff were lovely and helpful. Room was small but very nicely furnished. Fabulous location too. We would definitely visit again.

Review 9:No kettle, as other reviewers have been saying for months. No bin in the main room, again as other reviewers have been saying for months. Both are very easily rectified. There was, during our stay, no heating apart from a tiny fan heater. This was due to an issue with the boiler and this was adequately dealt with when we checked out.

Review 10:Clean, large room with nice modern decor. Ideally placed for alnwick garden and town centre.

Review 11:Radiators did not work in the room and the small heater provided was not adequate for heating the large room. The toilet leaked and the room located next to restaurant which was noisy from 6 in the morning with preparation work.

Review 12:There was complimentary water and the room was decorated nice. The hotel was also situated well.

Review 13:The room was really hot with only a small window to create a breeze and the mattress was really uncomfortable

Review 14:nice and clean throughout.right on the Main Street and could easily walk about without needing the use a car.staff were helpful and overall a nice place.

Review 15:Not a thing.

Review 16:Central location, friendliness of all staff without exception, delightful decor, welcoming bar area, comfort of room and cleanliness throughout.

Review 17:only a minor issue but the loo took half a dozen flushes to get rid of the 'evidence'

Review 18:Friendly staff, spotlessly clean accommodation and a lovely breakfast

Review 19:We were informed that if we returned to the hotel after around 1pm we would need to use the key fob to get in however this didn't work, we tried for 30 minutes if not more to get someone to let us in and one guest did eventually but we still didn't have access to our own room so ended up having to call the local police who know the owner and called him to come and let us in!!!

Review 20:Beautifully decorated, breakfast was lovely and staff were all very helpful.

Review 21:Our friends (on 2nd floor) couldn't get in at 1.30am using fob/swipe thing. We got in ok (on 1st floor) and were able to phone emergency no. for them. Response excellent, but might be a good idea to have notice with emergency no. on outside of doors, rather than in rooms only?

Review 22:Lovely staff, ambience / decor, rooms, food.

Review 23:Tiny bed -not only did my husbands feet hang over the edge of the bed, he's 6'3 but mine did too - 5'8. Also the toilet piping wasn't very reliable, took a good few flushes for the toilet waste to be flushed away! Breakfast was disappointing!

Review 24:Lovely welcoming feel and enjoyed the saxophone

Review 25:Very poor wifi signal in room Difficult entrance to car park

Review 26:We liked the large size of the bedroom which was very clean and well furnished The bathroom was well equipped with complimentary toiletries and extra large fluffy bath towels The food was excellent The staff were all very nice and helpful It has a good selection of beers Off road parking

Review 27:We didn't like the saniflow toilet...the vegetarian breakfast could've been better.

Review 28:We loved the interior decor of all of the rooms; they have been finished to a very high standard. The staff are friendly and professional, smartly dressed and attentive. The free parking was a real plus point for us.

Review 29:Pokey room with only a high level velux window. WC didn't work properly, shower was an electric shower, very noisy & didn't function very well. No towels on arrival, had to go and ask for some. Only had cooked breakfast on the first day and it was very greasy so didn't bother the second day. Tea was foul, not sure if it was the water or the tea bag but undrinkable. Juices were watered down so more like cordial rather than proper fruit juice. In my opinion it doesn't really work having the hotel as part of the pub, it all seemed a little disorganised.

Review 30:Good location, generally nice décor and friendly staff

Review 31:The toilet in the single room I stayed in didn't flush properly - it was like it got stuck half flush- and periodically made really loud noises all night. The shower wasn't hot in the morning and I couldn't get the shower head to stay still. And on the first morning my tea tasted like cleaning product & there is no kettle in the room that I could find.

Review 32:V nice room and friendly staff when I arrived late.

Review 33:Breakfasts were pretty poor. However, we had dinner in the restaurant one evening and it was great.

Review 34:Lovely room, nice bar (well stocked) and friendly staff! :)

Review 35:Our toilet was really noisy in our room and the windows were about ready for replacement but didn't spoil our stay . Some of the staff could smile a bit more

Review 36:Very good location and parking was easy and plentiful. Lovely decor throughout the hotel . The breakfasts were fantastic Will definitely consider staying here again if we go to Alnwick

Review 37:Only miss was a kettle - the water in a nespresso machine doesn't make a hot cup of tea

Review 38:We really liked the look of the hotel, the furnishings were very stylish. The welcome each time we moved around the hotel, from every member of staff, was exceptional The bedrooms were very comfortable and the bed was one of the most comfortable we have slept in. Homemade cookies left in our room were a great touch

Review 39:NOTHING REALLY. A BIT PRICEY COMPARED WITH OTHER HOTELS.

Review 40:VERY COMFORTABLE, GOOD STAFF, BED WAS GREAT , BREAKFAST A BIT SLOW AND DISORGANISED BUT GOOD WHEN IT ARRIVED.

Review 41:There ought to be someone on duty after hours in case of an emergency. e.g. Fire alarm at 12.15 a.m.

Review 42:An excellent location for tourists. Will definitely return. Homemade biscuits in room was a nice touch.

Review 43:showerhead was not fixed therefore had to bend to get under it, no handle on the tap of the basin. no surface under the mirror to put toiletries on. door of the room did not close properly (had to pull hard to close it) and the temp of the water in the shower was luke warm. Electric shower made a lot of noise!!!

Review 44:decoration and atmosphere

Review 45:Since we were allocated a smaller room there was very little space to put your gear but adequate for a night .

Review 46:Only stayed 1 night , hotel was in a good location and the room was clean and i can't praise the staff enough after somehow booking .com allowed me to double book ,so i had to take a smaller room, when we got there a bottle of prosecco was waiting for us .

Review 47:The outside bar area was adjacent to the main road so little noisy at times, but good for people watching.

Review 48:Lovely character building. Bedroom was very clean and comfortable and loved the welcoming cookie and the real coffee. The restaurant food was excellent with good choices of local food.

Review 49:No kettle or milk for tea at first Salty bottled water !?! Wonky tap and noisy shower Room a bit hot and noisy and smelled of drains

Review 50:Friendly staff gave me a lovely welcome, got me a kettle and then some milk, offered to look after my luggage after I checked out Great location Good menu of breakfast choices Espresso machine in room Attractive decor Hot cookies, crisps and chocolate Comfy bed

Review 51:Had to plug in kettle on window sill as there was nowhere planned for it. Coffee machine in wardrobe and we did not want this kind of fancy coffee. Not easy to plug in the hair dryer as the plug was under the dressing table at the back behind the very heavy stool which was hard for us to move out, and then had to bend right down to plug it in. It needed to be plugged near the mirror of course so no other plug in sight to use. No bin in the bedroom for the tea bags etc, had to keep going to the bathroom bin, so took the bathroom bin into the bedroom so not spill anything from the tea bags on the carpet.

Review 52:We asked for a kettle to make tea, this was supplied without any problem.

Review 53:The staff seemed a little inexperienced, as if they were just learning. The dials on the shower had some really disgusting black gunge around them. The nespresso machine was a very poor substitute for a kettle, so I did not have a decent cup of tea. The scrambled egg at breakfast was a complete disappointment and the heaped salmon not very well presented. These are small things that could easily be remedied and should not be the focus of my review. Try harder on the details.

Review 54:The room was warm and spacious. The decor was excellent. The evening menu was excellent.

Review 55:would prefer a kettle in the bedroom rather than the coffee maker as I do not drink coffee and the tea was never piping hot.

Review 56:comfort and cleanliness of the room, also the location away from any noise of the town

Review 57:Lovely decor & spacious dinning area, food great. Staff friendly and very helpful, overall a lovely relaxing break, only problem I did not book for a longer stay.

Review 58:On arrival there was already a couple checking in and the young man behind the bar was friendly and having a conversation with them and giving them all the information they needed. When I came to check in, he made no attempt at conversation, he just handed me my key and told me my room was at the top of the stairs. I had no information about what time breakfast was, or what time the front doors were locked at night. I know I wasn't looking my greatest, as I had just spent 10 hours travelling to the area for a job interview the next day. This just made me feel like I wasn't welcome and put me off eating in the restaurant that evening. Such a shame for such a lovely hotel, luckily the staff the next morning made up for this young man, but unfortunately the damage had been done by that point and would be unlikely to return if he is working behind the bar.

Review 59:The room was good with all the facilities you would expect, as well as a cookie on arrival. The hotel was well situated to all the local amneneties. On the whole the staff are really friendly and welcoming. Plenty of choice on the breakfast menu

Review 60:Lack of a lift made the stairs a bit of a challenge but the staff were most helpful.

Review 61:The staff were excellent.nothing seemed to much trouble and they were polite and cheerful. The resturant was very pleasant and food good.

Review 62:Road noise from outside, not the fault of the Hotel

Review 63:Lovely welcome from Michael the manager, First class service throughout. Beautiful decoration and excellent food in the restaurant.

Review 64:No aircon in room we were staying in but receptionist said that was on agenda to resolve

Review 65:Very close to alnwick gardens where we were attending a wedding the staff were very friendly and helpful and the breakfast was excellent with a lot to choose from

Review 66:Really nice designed comfortable rooms with great coffee machines and lovely complementary cookies and chocolate, great bar and great food especially the breakfast that was included.

Review 67:No kettle or waste bin in the room. No guest information booklet in room (had to go back down to the bar to ask for wifi code) Wifi was verŷ intermittent . Toilet was very noisy & inefficient.

Review 68:Bedroom decor was good.

Review 69:We did not realise how many stairs there would be and our Mother is 89 and found them quite a challenge. Breakfast selection declined as the week progressed.

Review 70:The staff very welcoming, room comfortable and clean. The food was presented well.

Review 71:Very poor reception arrangements. No wifi. Very disappointing breakfast - no fresh fruit, yoghurts, or croissants/pastries.

Review 72:Good location near Alnwick Castle. Clean and modern. Nice touches in rooms eg chocs, crisps, cookies, bottled water.

Review 73:Tea and coffee not available in bar area after 9.30pm - something that could be resolved with ease. Inside shower cubicles could do with a little TLC - again easily fixed as otherwise place very clean.

Review 74:Situation of Inn was ideal. The environment was comfortable and very relaxing for both young and old.

Review 75:I tried hard to find something I didn't like but failed.

Review 76:Loved the young ladies attire. The Alnwick breakfast was delicious. Best breakfast I have had for ages.coffee machine in the bedroom was fantastic.

Review 77:Traffic noise a bit of a problem as the room was at the front of the hotel.

Review 78:Room was large and comfortable. The staff provided lots of little extras such as the delicious home baked cookies.

Review 79:Road noise was very loud with window open. Bed was very soft. No info in room on breakfast times or checkout. Strange that coffee machine is in wardrobe.

Review 80:Beautiful room, friendly staff and excellent food.

Review 81:Rooms are on 3rd floor, no phone in room to call reception had to ask when downstairs for a spare toilet roll. Nespresso machine located in the wardrobe low down. Noisy as room on Main Street. Food takes too long to arrive. I had to wait 30 mins for my bill to be retrieved eventually they had to email me my bill. Too expensive for what I would class as a pub hotel.

Review 82:Hotel clean. Food good.

Review 83:The meal in the evening was a little disappointing in that my coq au vin was served up in a dish so small that i had trouble eating it.

Review 84:The room was a pleasure to be in and the complimentary crisps, cookies, chocolate and water were very nice touches. There was a great range of breakfast options to choose from.

Review 85:Could do with a little bit of storage space in the bedroom I stayed in (7)

Review 86:Good Location, nice decor, spotlessly clean, great breakfast & would highly recommend

Review 87:Our room (number 1) only had a view of a brick wall with windows which we were unable to open, this would have been totally unacceptable if our stay had been longer than one night.

Review 88:General standard of the hotel. The decor and the good food on offer.

Review 89:A very minor point. On a hot day with the window open the traffic noise was a bit intrusive but would not inhibit a further stay.

Review 90:The nice, friendly, helpful staff and the good food

Review 91:Rooms were very modern but one flaw were they were stifling hot even with windows open and fan on full. Could really do with Air Conditioning.

Review 92:Great location and staff

Review 93:The room I stayed in was that small there wasn't a wardrobe to hang my shirts (this wasn't described / explained before I booked. I stayed at the front of the property which sits on the main road so can by a little noisy. The plumbing for the loo uses a pump. I don't know if that is the reason for the slight smell of sewage in the bathroom, The shower is adequate. The free Wi Fi worked occasionally.

Review 94:The Décor. The staff were welcoming and generally pleasant enough throughout my stay, free parking. Food was okay.

Review 95:Loved this hotel! The staff couldn't do enough for us, very helpful even giving us anti histamines when we'd come down with hayfever! The food was fab and the hotel was gorgeous! Had freshly baked cookies every morning and even had a nespresso for us to make our own drinks!

Review 96:moments from gardens, castle, town and bus stops. Staff friendly and helpful. Smallish room, clean, co ordinated decor. coffee machine & welcome tray . Restaurant good. Comfortable stay

Review 97:No kettle in the room, a Nespresso machine is no substitute. No glasses for the bottled water. No drawers for clothes in the room. Room not vacuumed every day

Review 98:Staff were wonderful, evening meal was excellent, room was stylish and the bed was huge! Nice biscuits in the room

Review 99:The staff were great, even before we turned up. They allowed us to book in earlier to work around the timings of the wedding we were attending. Gorgeous room with a huge big bed. Loved the little touches with nibbles etc. Breakfast was delicious.

Review 100:no lift and was with my 82 year old mother. However staff immediately carried her case upstairs My biggest problem was the heat I found my bedroom unbearable. No window to open and skylight meant sun blazed through early morning. I had no sleep what so ever and returned home immediately the following morning as I was shattered. Also long wait for meals

Review 101:lovely, newly furbished boutique type hotel Décor spot on and lots of extras to make travellers feel special Varied menu Staff helpful

Review 102:If anything the room got a little too warm in the night and we couldn't open a window but that's all.

Review 103:Everything - the whole ethos of the place ! The staff were all welcoming and went out of their way to be helpful. Definately coming back !

Review 104:No fruit at breakfast coupled with a very poor cereal selection. Dinner a case of style over practicality. They have joined the "no plate" group. My burger was served sitting on chips in a wire cage on a wooden block; ridiculous. Bedside lighting (joke) shades of dark brown do not allow much light to escape & with "wings" on the bed blocking the light anyway yet another case of so called style over practicality..

Review 105:The location.

Review 106:We were made to feel welcome from the moment we stepped in, room was lovely with added little extras. The bar staff were attentive and the restaurant had a delicious dinner and breakfast menu. Well done

Review 107:A lack of staff - you really had to search for for someone, we couldn't find any member of staff at breakfast for 15 minutes.

Review 108:The style & the comfort of the hotel was great.

Review 109:No window other than skylight in room. Bit stuffy therefore. Bar staff in evening preoccupied so we gave up and went somewhere else for dinner. Access to car park VERY narrow!

Review 110:Well equipped room and nice coffee and cookies in room. Breakfast was the best.

Review 111:The only complaint was that the bedroom windows wouldn't open, so the room was too warm, and lacked fresh air.

Review 112:Great, friendly, staff - they were able to easily deal with our dietary requirements.

Review 113:There was very weak WiFi coverage on the ground floor , none on our top room floor. Poor coffee/tea making facilities (replace coffee machine with kettle)

Review 114:Very Good food, although quite expensive Courteous staff. Good ensuite (nice shower)

Review 115:The road noise at night was awful, there were no bath rails at all to assist with balance getting in and out of the bath/shower. A glass shelf was dangerously positioned directly over the rubbish bin. There was no pre-warning that meals wouldn't be served on a Sunday evening which after a long days drive was highly inconvenient. Overall we were extremely disappointed with this hotel.

Review 116:I was staying with friends and of the 3 bookings between us...2 were unable to stay the 2nd night as the hotel had double booked itself. The staff were very apologetic. However the rooms were all booked seperately so for 2/3 booking to be wrong I would suggest this is process is reviewed to prevent similar mistakes in the future

Review 117:The Plaugh Inn has recently been revamped with the new decor being very tasteful. The rooms are clean and again tastefully decorated. The breakfast was excellent and along with drinks the night before served with a smile.

Review 118:The tap lever was missing on the wash hand basin mixer tap. The noise of the toilet macerators calls for some sound insulation.

Review 119:A very comfortable room that was a good distance away from the inevitable noise in a lively pub bar. A fresh cooked to order breakfast, not some dreadful hotplate buffet!

Review 120:Unfortunately live music in the bar and the noisy event at the rear deprived us of the good nights sleep we both needed to continue our journey the next day. Would also draw attention to the difficult access to the rear car park!

Review 121:We liked the style and comfort of our room. The evening meal was excellent and the staff very pleasant.

Review 122:The mattress was a little soft for us but overall had a great stay and would definitely stay there again.

Review 123:Very good location, we ate in the restaurant, great dinner and breakfast. Friendly, helpful staff. Hotel has been recently refurbished and the decor is very stylish.

Review 124:The room I had was looking directly at a brick wall some three feet away and was above the bar which was open until 1 am at the weekend. So if either of these things would bother you then room 1 is not for you. These things did not bother me unduly and I still enjoyed my stay at The Plough.

Review 125:Loved the location, breakfast and dining.

Review 126:Wifi didn't work for us but it wasn't a big deal so we didn't pursue it and I expect it could have been sorted out; a little noisy as in the centre of town, but no great problem

Review 127:Friendly staff, parking, central town location; decent coffee available in the room

Review 128:Time to deliver food EXTREMELY long - waiting 25 mins for starter & 35 mins for main course. 40 mins wait for breakfast service.

Review 129:Excellent location; very comfortable & stylish hotel and lovely room. Overall standard of food good but main meal (fish) below standard.

Review 130:However, the thing that spoiled my stay at the Plough was the strong smell coming from the toilet system which seemed worse in the evening and early hours. Also when you flushed the loo it sounded like a hurricane!

Review 131:I liked the location which is on the main street (Bondgate Without) and just around the corner from the castle and grounds and convenient for the town centre. Generally I liked the room (No. 7 on the 2nd floor) and facilities and full english breakfast which I thought was good value for money (price £67.00 per night).

Review 132:Breakfast on the first morning took 40 minutes and not very good - but the next morning only 10 minutes and was great - so a blip not a real issue.

Review 133:Excellent room - good size bed and bathroom Very good dinner/lunch - especially the local recipes/produce. Very helpful staff Ample parking Lovely decor Very convenient Fantastic value for money

Review 134:We had to be moved from our choice of room as the toilet cistern was broken in the ensuite. The new room was nice, but the bed was a lot smaller and the the mattress uncomfortable. Sounded like springs in it had gone. So didn't get the good nights sleep we were looking for

Review 135:Lush decor, fabulous food, good choice of beers. Lively atmosphere without being too loud

Review 136:the only problem was the waiting time for evening meal but worth the wait the food was excellent and it was a bank holiday

Review 137:The location was lovely and the manager was very friendly made our stay lovely the staff were all very friendly

Review 138:My single room had a high window, that's all.

Review 139:The location is near the castle and only a simple walk to the centre. The food is well presented and well cooked by a dedicated chef. All the staff are so friendly it's just the perfect place to stay and unwind.

Review 140:Of the two evening meals, one was acceptable, the other disappointing; the management gallantly declining payment for the latter.

Review 141:The room was comfortable and clean .The breakfast was good. The all round service was excellent ,management and staff are to be congratulated.
