Reviews for The Angel Hotel
Review 1:Room was cold, damp and smelled. Breakfast was wholesome. Facilities were poor and the bar area was dirty especially the pool table room.
Review 2:The rate was very expensive for what the hotel Offered and the standard of accommodation and cleanliness. Should have stayed at the Travel Lodge for value for money. Don't recommend.
Review 3:Not suitable for females on their own - the restaurant area was next to the bar where very unsavoury language was being used. The hotel is shabby & rundown, no parking spaces left in the car park meant I had to park on the public road. Carpet in bedroom smelt of urine - obviously from plumbing problems with the inadequate bathroom. Poor choice left on the evening dinner menu at 18:30!
Review 4:A period property
Review 5:The location of the hotel was excellent for Flambards, this hotel is right in the high street and easy to find. The beds were comfortable and the morning brekkie good.
Review 6:This year, we were disappointed that there was no fruit or yoghurts for breakfast. Also one of the four granddaughters had expected conditioner for her hair as she remembers that it was provided last year.
Review 7:George, the manager was able to offer us a room where we could all be together, thank you!
Review 8:- rooms are in need of redecorating, we stayed in a double and the en suite was very small. The shower water pressure was insanely non exsistant. Only met one bar staff, who only told you need to know information in a rush to get back to talking to his friend.
Review 9:- close to town
Review 10:Could do with a fresh tin of paint and a bit of an upgrade.
Review 11:Smack bang in the centre of Helston. Parking at the rear. Good bar and food available. The breakfast was lovely and the young girl (Cheryl?) who served it was lovely and very attentive.
Review 12:The place has some potential but needs refurbishment (eg.the breakfast room or the rooms) The breakfast wasn't good and on the next day we checked out earlier to have a breakfast somewhere else. the staff could be more involved: when we checked in, nobody (young guys working in the bar) asked us if we need any help, further assistance etc... They looked very unhappy to serve us.
Review 13:Room quite clean however cushions looked a bit ugly. Good wifi, comfortable beds.
Review 14:Hotel parking was a lottery. Our superior room had nowhere to hang towels, the shower head connection leaked hugely, the toilet seat was loose and almost dropping off, the shaver socket was so loose that the shaver plug dropped out all the time and the bathroom door catch was held on by one screw and loose. Also, there was no power point anywhere near the mirror, so we had to move an extension lead around the room as needed. Need we say more!!!!!!!!
Review 15:Nothing
Review 16:convenient to access points of interest. museum is superb with wonderful volunteers.meals great, staff friendly and helpful. off street parking wonderful.
Review 17:No sweetener option available, only sugar or nothing. Breakfast was not great, small portion and a little oily. Hairdryer only available upon request, room and bathroom was big enough to have one installed. Wifi was very slow. Owner parked over our car in the car park and delayed us. Yes there is parking available. That's not what the ad says
Review 18:The bed was amazingly comfortable, room good size, lovely building. Bar staff very friendly. Kettle, tea and coffee facilities.
Review 19:Dated bit grotty Breakfast poor- waited 3/4 hour for scrambled egg on toast then got bacon and eggs / eggs horrid and all greasy
Review 20:Shower clean bed clean and good sheets
Review 21:The stairs were very steep and the Windows do not relieve any noise at all. Parking was a lottery. En suite was very small very cramped
Review 22:The location was wonderful
Review 23:I paid the same amount as my friend for a double bedroom but he had bathtub in his room and I didn't. I think that wasn't fair charging similar prices for rooms that are actually not same.
Review 24:The size of the room
Review 25:Hotel is tired & requires redecorating, room not as show on the website. Breakast was poor, considering the £90 per night charge. Would not recommend staying here, especially over a weekend, due to unruly drunks keeping us awake until 4:00am.
Review 26:Noise from rooms nearby at night - toilet hand drier nearby and water pipes noisy. Girl serving breakfast was nice but inexperienced. I wandered around dining room for 10 minutes before anyone noticed me. Milk was off and curdled in tea. It's a small thing but there was no soya milk option or decaf tea. Had to make your own toast Room decor was tatty and a bit grubby. Missing a lot of things I've come to expect in a much cheaper Travelodge.
Review 27:Location good and bed was comfortable Cooked breakfast was good.
Review 28:English breakfast Saturday greasey sausages appeared undercooked sunday I had to go into the kitchen and interrupt the conversation between the cook and the waiter in order to order
Review 29:very helpful lady working evenings behind the bar Friday & saturday
Review 30:Nothing bad to report only small minor issue not something to complain about as such, would be that as the shower/toilet was quite small and there was a shelf with sharp edges, my boyfriend scratched his back on it a few times after using the toilet as it is located right near it. One other thing was the parking, we had an issue where we could not get a parking space one day. The hotel has it's own parking area next door and on this day we parked in here opposite the parking spaces where there was a small area of space (but was not a specific parking space) but got told to move as we were apparently blocking the driveway of the house located opposite, but we were not blocking anybody in at all. There was more than enough room for cars to get in and out, and I feel they (the family in house) treating the car park as theirs and that they felt they could dictate who parked where. They even suggested I parked across one of the other cars basically blocking them in! This whole issue occurred because some of the spaces were being used up for workmen/ builders so out of 5 spaces, only 3 were available to people staying at the hotel.
Review 31:Very enjoyable stay here from 15th - 21st August. Room (9)was nice, quite spacious with lovely comfy clean bed. Shower room was fine always had hot water. Good facilities with bar and pool table. Lovely breakfast and never had to wait long for a full English breakfast. Rooms tidied and beds made everyday. Very secure hotel for people staying as you can't get upstairs to the rooms without the key to a door downstairs. Overall very enjoyable stay with the hotel located in the middle of town near everything.
Review 32:Lack of parking I arrived after a long journey tired wanting a shower and be able to check in was made to wait while locals were served beer shower cupcake to small to get in because of screen curtain be better
Review 33:Not a lot the bar was ok but v dated seem to be a shortage of staff
Review 34:Breakfast & Breakfast service was the worst I have had anywhere on the planet! Opted for breakfast elsewhere after two days.
Review 35:Hotel location was central for the area. Great hotel bar with friendly bar staff.
Review 36:Wi fi is hit and miss but expected with old stone property and not the end of the world
Review 37:Very good location everything is close by just park car and walk enjoy the sights and 2 miles from the sea
Review 38:A very tired and shabby hotel if you like cleanliness don't stop here ! Breakfast is best eaten somewhere else reminded me of school dinners !
Review 39:First problem the shower wasn't working. We informed reception we were offered a key to use another room to shower but couldn't use it the following day due to the hotel being fully booked. Breakfast was served by a very young inexperienced waitress no juice, glasses, cereal bowls and the tables weren't cleared. Not what I would expect from this hotel.
Review 40:Good location, very clean.
Review 41:We paid for a full English breakfast but none was provided due to a flooded ceiling this is not acceptable. I will not use this hotel again
Review 42:The weather was good but hotel was tacky and in need of repair although the bar area was good. Entertainment poor
Review 43:When myself and my finance returned on a Saturday evening we were greeted with a Karioke evening which we were completely unaware off within the hotel, walking upstairs to our room (which was right above the function room) it seemed to get louder, we consulted the staff on the bar who were not interested with our complaint of noise and shrugged it off, we didn't get to sleep untill 2am, consiquently missing breakfast. When we asked for a refund we were refused and were not offered an apology. Customer service is not a priority here
Review 44:The location is superb for all the tourist attractions and activities, plenty of choice of eateries and entertainment
Review 45:Bathroom was unacceptable. WiFi - down Basically a ' run down ' Hotel.
Review 46:Beds comfortable ,clean sheets etc. Staff O.K. - unfortunately not much else.
Review 47:Arrived at 9.30pm on 3/7/15 - no one on Reception to assist.Hotel seemed empty - no staff anywhere to be found! Eventually, a bar-man appeared and gave us a room key, but had no idea where the room was!Directed us through a doorway into a pitch black hallway - lightbulbshad obviously all blown - could not see! Room was on top floor - nolift. After struggling up 3 flights of stairs with heavy luggage, eventually found the room. Very dimly lit - inadequate lighting -economy lightbulbs which gave no light at all! Curtains were badlystained and looked damp as if covered in mildew - wardrobe had handlesmissing - tv remote did not work - no iron or ironing board. Bathroomhad no separate shower, no shelving to put anything on and no mirror atall! Room also had no full-length mirror and only two small mirrorspositioned in awkward places high up on the wall - totally unsuitablefor shaving or make-up! Mirror in bathroom was essential, as my wife isa professional singer and had to get up early the next morning toprepare for a performance at a local event. Went down to reception torequest another room with a bathroom mirror - told the manager was notthere and the bar-man could not authorize a move to another room, butsaid he would phone the manager. Waited over an hour for a reply!Eventually told no other room was available but a mirror would beprovided - however, this would not be until after 11.00pm when the bar-man finished his shift! My wife and I had driven a long way to Helstonand had to be up very early the next day, so wanted to retire to bed -had to stay up and wait until 11.20pm when the bar-man appeared at thebedroom door with a very large mirror. This was totally unsuitable forthe bathroom and the only place it could go was balanced precariously onthe small bathroom sink, behind the taps, making them almost impossibleto use! Very dangerous - had it fallen - would have caused injury!
Review 48:Only redeeming feature was the beds/pillows were comfy.
Review 49:Due to early start was promised a packed lunch. This did not materialise. Nowhere to leave room key so had to leave it on top of a box in the hall. Would not stay again.
Review 50:Location
Review 51:Tepid water only for the shower. No signal available for the TV. Lamps not working.
Review 52:Staff friendly and helpful. Location for us was good as we were visiting family here. Bed really comfortable and room was clean. Breakfast was ok.car parking available behind hotel
Review 53:The only down side was the bathroom, a little on the small side but was clean and re-filled everyday with toiletries.
Review 54:Excellent location with anything you need close by. Staff very helpful and went and there way to make it a more enjoyable stay.
Review 55:......it costs a lot of money to bring such buildings into the 21st century while keeping a sense of style............ the Angel hasn't really managed this........ particularly the breakfast room which needs some tlc.........
Review 56:the sense of history inherent in such a building..............
Review 57:Sliding bathroom door.
Review 58:Perfect location, comfy bed, yummy breakfast, friendly staff, the dining room was a hidden gem, first time visit for Flora day, will be back again.
Review 59:Family room small and a bit dated. Shower would not turn off....Had to dismantle it to get it to turn off...... long life milk !!! It was off !! Furniture handles were all loose.
Review 60:Right in the main street of Helston. Staff helpful. Asked for milk and it was no problem. Breakfast good.
Review 61:Hotel very old ,so quirky which I personally like. Emma seemed to be on duty every time I was around and I could not have asked for anymore. clean room and comfie bed.
Review 62:1.Rooms not as shown on website. 2.Fausty smell in hallways and rooms. 3.Very limited parking 4.Very poor cleanliness in rooms especially shower trays and corners of the toilet. Disgusting! 5.Shower didn't work properly, took my wife 30 mins as water dribbled out. 6.Breakfast awful - food didn't taste fresh so ended up leaving it! 7.Expensive, poor quality. 8.Room 10
Review 63:The bar was nice, clean and food ok.
Review 64:A few more hooks in the shower room for hanging towels and clothes whilst showering!
Review 65:Sue cooked and served our breakfast; she was amazing! Thank you, Sue, for your welcome and the brilliant food!.I stayed with two grandchildren so needed an overnight B&B in order to watch the fireworks and get free entry to Flambards on the following day. I didn't want to drive back to Padstow in the dark, so chose The Angel as it was so close.
Review 66:The only thing was our room had a view of the kitchen.
Review 67:It was a very quiet enjoyable stay, very comfortable bed, staff were very helpful and the location was also good for local facilities.
Review 68:Tiny bathroom ... I had to open the bathroom door to be able to brush my teeth as every time I moved my head towards the sink I bumped it on the shelf overhead. It did not have a hairdryer .... you had to ask reception to borrow one. No water glasses in room (which every other location we stayed in over a week in Devon & Cornwall, all of similar price, provided). Overpowering smell in bathroom coupled with over-noisy sani-flow machine.
Review 69:Needs careful and sensitive refurbishment and it could be a fine hotel. Toilet in our room leaked over the floor but a new room was no problem. Chef had disappeared but young waitress had knocked up a reasonable cottage pie and tried very hard to cope on her own .
Review 70:Position in the High St . Old fashioned ,traditional and very English . Pleasant staff who did their best despite various difficulties . Building had amazing architectural features from many eras .
Review 71:Our room ( no 10 ) was on the top floor. As a result there must have very little water pressure because the water that came out of shower head was a dribble at best and totally unusable. The room was situated at the front of the hotel overlooking main high street. We stayed on a Saturday night. There was a constant noice of drunk persons shouting at the top of their voices until 4am ! The free wifi that was advertised was intermittent at best. When mentioned staff say this was due to thick granite walls of hotel !!
Review 72:The guy that greeted us was welcoming and he was throughout the stay. The dinner was excellent as was the breakfast the following day. The waitress who was on breakfast duty was also very friendly. The bed was very comfortable.
Review 73:The food, breakfast included even though I sent it back twice. Cost. £90.00p/night poor interior and poor decoration. Linen- Towels were threadbear. bedroom was at front of the building with a street light/ pub light outside window and white curtains!! Having to pay upfront!
Review 74:Didn't like anything, apart from the fact it was near the Blue Anchor pub!
Review 75:Rooms are a bit lacklustre, could do with a bit of modernising.
Review 76:Main hotel in this small quaint market town. Good chinese restaurant across the road for evening meal.
Review 77:The large room was sparsely furnished and some items were broken eg drawer fronts that fell away in your hand. There were insuffient surfaces in bedroom and bathroom. Overall run down impression.
Review 78:Location for surrounding area, very helpful staff, a good breakfast, good food in restaurant and a comfortable bed.
Review 79:Emma is a the receptionist and serves as well. She looks after the guests in an exceptionally kind and considerate way,and is very good at her job. The hotel is a nice old fashioned place, it is clean, comfortable and friendly.I was alone but enjoyed the friendly atmosphere in the dining room.Everyone seemed to be enjoying their visit. It is on the main street but that is not too busy.It is a pleasant old town.
Review 80:Poor parking. Kept waiting nearly 20 mins to check-in and were then told we had just missed the restaurent. Requested an early breakfast at 07:45 in stead of 08:00. Confirmation that they could do this took over two hours and we even chose the breakfast options the night before. At 08:20 we still had not recieved our breakfast and had to leave (without breakfast) to catch a ferry. Stayed on a Friday night and there appeared to be a loud karaoke bar in the immediate vacinity that didn't stop until after midnight, followed by people leaving noisily. Hotel literature stated that checkout could happen from 7:00 onwards, however, the only staff around at that time were the staff who failed with the breakfast.
Review 81:Good location with repect to Helston.
Review 82:All tiny things that added up. Wifi never worked. Breakfast selection poor. Furniture in the room very delapedated. (Fell apart)
Review 83:Very friendly staff.
Review 84:Previous comment says it all. The fabric of the building could do with some investment.
Review 85:The angel was a bit tired with her plumage having seen better days, however the attitude of the staff was excellent. Special mention for Emma who was always pleasant and attentive
Review 86:The noise from the road directly below the window was all night, kids using it as a racetrack! The local club also very noisy, and the shower was either hot or cold. Parking was terrible, enough for 4 cars, with the nearest car park being a pay and display a mile away!
Review 87:The bed was absolutely gorgeous, so comfy, tv and tea facilities were brilliant, and they facilities topped up daily. The breakfast was lovely, plenty to chose from and the service from the staff was lovely!
Review 88:More staff needed in bar and serving breakfast. Wifi was not working during our visit. Router probably needed rebooting but went to Tescos instead.
Review 89:Close to RNAS Culdrose where we were visiting. Value was ok.
Review 90:Only a couple of small niggles, the en suite was very small, and would have loved a soak in a bath after a 9 hour journey, also hardly any staff, same chap checked us in, ran the bar at night, and was doing breakfast duties the next morning, all very well but a bit of a wait at all times.
Review 91:Our room was comfortable and the bed was fine, we both slept very well. Breakfast was very nice with plenty of options, staff very friendly and helpful.
Review 92:The shower was very weak and could have done with more power. Found it a little difficult to control temperature.
Review 93:The staff were extremely helpful and the meal we had on the evening of our arrival was very nice and good value. A good breakfast next morning.
Review 94:room was shabby . very little draw space no hooks for hanging things.faced the kitchens ,no net curtain.bare minimum staff poor service at breakfast.
Review 95:Central location
Review 96:The owner's art collection, which was on display throughout the building, perhaps needed a special room all to itself where people could go and browse, maybe with explanations about some of the more avant garde pieces? He is obviously very passionate about his collection but there seemed to be no coherence about where it was displayed.
Review 97:The staff were absolutely wonderful and couldn't do enough for us. The evening meals were amazing, generous and great value- the chips will go down in history!!!! Even though there were plenty of other places to eat, we chose to eat here every night. The breakfasts were super, again generous and used local produce. The location is perfect for visiting both coasts.
Review 98:Need a venetian blind for privacy in the room, I had to draw the curtains before dark to shower and change.
Review 99:Nice welcome, comfortable room, good food, very pleasant staff
Review 100:The smell of Jeyes fluid on arrival. The fact that they were unable to find our booking, (we booked via Booking.com and received confirmation of our booking). The fact that they completely ruined a poignant and very significant family break, just prior to our son's army posting.
Review 101:Going home
Review 102:The evening meal was not good and even though a free bottle of wine was included with two meals ordered this did not disguise the poor quality of ingredients. The hotel is rather tired and could do with a bit of updating generally. There was no double glazing in the bedroom windows at the front of the hotel where our room was positioned and unfortunately closing the window did little to mute the noise from those leaving pubs and clubs throughout the night.
Review 103:The best thing about this hotel was the manager who works very hard to make guests stay a pleasant experience. The ambience was good and the quirky nature of the hotel makes it an interesting stay. The breakfast was very good quality with a range of options included.
Review 104:The room was poorly decorated and the onsuite bathroom was a cupboard Pictures didn't seem to fit in with the age or history of the place.
Review 105:Clean and comfortable Historic building Potential to be an excellent hotel
Review 106:The hotel's shower cubicle is too small. The toilet in the family room has a very unpleasant smell! The kitchen taks too long to cook our dinner!
Review 107:Staffs are friendly.
Review 108:Our room had a mush mash of odd bits of old furniture. There was no head board on the bed and the quilt was bulging out of its cover. There was no toilet roll holder. There were only six parking spaces for all of the guests. You would have to use the pay and display one up the road if there wasn't a space left.
Review 109:The waitress on duty at breakfast was friendly and helpful. She offered to make our toast as you were supposed to make your own. The food was average and the bed was comfy.
Review 110:Where to begin. Run down and desperately in need of refurbishment. Saw no hotel staff in the two days we were there, apart from booking in when full payment was requested immediately. The smallest shower room ever with no water pressure. Cheap, nasty breakfast, which we didn't bother with on the second day, just got out. Also can't eat in Helston after 8-30 on a Saturday evening, everything closed so go elsewhere. It's like tourism way back when. Don't ever go.
Review 111:Pleasant check in staff who fixed tv when asked to. Lovely old building from the outside in a pretty street.
Review 112:Sorry, but it was just disgusting. The facilities are unclean. Even our bedding was dirty and the staff didn't exactly know where our room was. The drinking glasses they had for breakfast and the ones we got a beer in the evening were all dirty. I can definitely not recommend this hotel and would advide anyone against it.
Review 113:It's in the centre of Helston.
Review 114:The rest of the hotel was in need of a revamp, very tired. Breakfast was fairly dire - burnt sausages, overbooked eggs (microwaved) and a toaster which took forever to toast!!!
Review 115:Room was clean and comfortable
Review 116:Staff were "nice", but completely unhelpful with getting the wireless internet connected. My colleague in another room had the same issue and the best the staff could do was "try to restart the router". The internet access just needs to work right. I was there for two nights and the problem was never solved--really frustrating.
Review 117:Location is pretty good.
Review 118:Tired, scruffy décor throughout. The paintings in the dining room are just bizarre and look completely out of place. Dirty plastic cup left in room's bathroom at our check-in and I had to ask on both days for a glass to use for drinking water. The room's furniture was a mix of 'period' and modern tat. At breakfast on the first morning I had to go in search of staff who were enjoying their own cup of tea in the kitchen. There were no bowls for cereal, no milk and no fruit juice. Once the single jugs were emptied the staff didn't refill them unless asked. We requested a boiled egg and the waiter had to ask the chef if that was OK. When the egg did arrive they didn't have egg cups (it came in a ramekin) and it was verging on raw.
Review 119:Errr......
Review 120:A collection of odd things: awkward furniture, wardrobe door almost impossible to open, extractor fan in bathroom old and drones on for a long time, no towel rails in bathroom...not worth the price charged, in our opinion.
Review 121:Clean spacious room. Comfortable bed.
Review 122:Expensive for standard of property, improvements made to bar area since we stayed last time 6 years ago,but still looks very tired.
Review 123:Central to town
Review 124:Decor was a little tired, tiniest bathroom ever
Review 125:Ideal location for our purposes
Review 126:didn't parking space for 2 days
Review 127:nice location, value for money
Review 128:Poor shower pressure and a very tired looking hotel. The food wasn't as good as on our previous visit 4 years ago.
Review 129:Friendly staff.
Review 130:Rooms need updating
Review 131:Rooms very drab Breakfast great Staff lovely when you find them
Review 132:So far nothing...
Review 133:Clean and all the staff are very accomodated. The location is safe.
Review 134:Ideal location in centre of Helston
Review 135:Worst place we have stayed in, room not service, breakfast discusting sausages raw.
Review 136:Breakfast was poor. No omelettes and when asked for boiled eggs these were underdone!! Voted with my feet
Review 137:Good location for working in the local area
Review 138:Under staffed.
Review 139:Friendly staff, clean room, comfortable bed. Good breakfast.
Review 140:Restricted parking
Review 141:Very basic but functional. Good location
