Reviews for Kilverts
Review 1:No electricity in first room when I arrived. Wasn't shown to room so just left lost in the dark. Was well looked after when owner arrived.
Review 2:Friendly staff, central location, onsite free parking, clean and comfortable room.
Review 3:Really good location and the team made us a beautiful christmas meal which made our stay very special. The rooms were quirky, individual and well stocked with toiletries and coffee ... nice bathrooms.
Review 4:My hangover.
Review 5:Very clean. Centrally located pub with excellent beer. Lovely country pub feel with fire place. Immaculate, very large room with original beams, additional chairs and new England suite. Would definitely use again.
Review 6:It would have benefited from some information in the room about meal times, menus and facilities. There was no wall fixing over the bath, so a hand-held shower head made the process more awkward than usual.
Review 7:The staff were extremely helpful and friendly and the breakfasts very good. It had a very pleasant and relaxing ambience.
Review 8:The main drawback is this property is perhaps overdue some investment to modernise and get rid of the 'fusty' smell throughout the bedrooms and public areas.
Review 9:Hotel is central and within easy walking distance of bookshops and other attractions. Own car park and very reasonable price.
Review 10:The shower head was a poor fitting and parted from the hosepipe once or twice and the bathroom radiator didn't work. Breakfast was an extra charge ( usually included).
Review 11:Location was very central and the food was good at a reasonable price. The bar staff were cheerful. The car park was free and close to the building.
Review 12:Spend my working life living out of "plastic" hotels......its' good to get away to places with character, good atmsphere, and real people
Review 13:Cleanliness wasn't up to scratch, no handle on outside of bathroom door meaning the door didn't close. Food at dinner was adequate but I wouldn't have had dinner again. Breakfast good.
Review 14:Location was great and also the staff were very nice
Review 15:We arrived early and Parked in the hotel car park, out of curtesy I went into the hotel to ask if o.k, the owner was unfriendly I then wished to stay somewhere else!
Review 16:The room and bed was comfy, the location was excellent
Review 17:We had to brush the toilet bowl clean when we arrived. There was no hot water available at all so we couldn't shower or bath.
Review 18:Position was good. Car parking.
Review 19:Grubby everywhere. No care of all the rubbish around the inside and out.Glass broken and a chair put to prevent walking in it but no one tidyingit away. No bathroom mirror, very poor lighting in bedroom, poorbreakfast choice. Unappealing and not value for money. Still think theyare charging because they just happen to be in Hay on Wye.
Review 20:Nothing - shower plughole blocked first morning therefore after 1 personshowered bathroom floor soaked making it very difficult for 2nd guest.
Review 21:the unhoovered bedroom with flies and wasps on the floor, the floor being moped and the smell of pine disifectant whilst having breakfeast, no happy faces from Staff, very pricey for the room and the meals in the pub.
Review 22:The bed was very comfy
Review 23:Very friendly staff in a period building. Room nicely decorated and loved the brass bedstead and wooden beams. Parking was good. The wonky floors and rabbit warren passages added to the charm. Enjoyed our stay.
Review 24:Not told about no lunch or evening meals in advance because of no chef Otherthan that really happy with our stay
Review 25:Straightfoward booking Helpful staff Lovely shower Compfy bed Fabulous large white towels Nice breakfast Conveniently situated
Review 26:No one bothered to change barrels of ale, all 4 beers were waiting for barrels to be changed with no one to do it. So I drank elsewhere. Asked for toast on last morning, none arrived. Breakfast was half the size on the second day so no consistency. Food was poor, menu limited and to add to it 'expensive' for what it was. Stayed here 6years ago and 8years ago and only returned this time because both previous occasions it was all lovely. Showing signs of disrepair and major mix up over bills on departure made us feel uneasy.
Review 27:Friendly staff 10/10. Nice rooms, good location.
Review 28:Pillows seam old and well used
Review 29:Beer garden front and rear. The room was lovely number 11 which had a spar bath but stopped working after a short while and started up again on its own while asleep in bed
Review 30:The public areas were scruffy and neglected. the staff presence was minimal. It needs some serious renovation and decorating.
Review 31:The bedroom (no 10) was lovely.
Review 32:The hotel was overpriced for the facilities it offered. No dedicated parking for guests. No shower and room 5 very noisy due to kitchen fans.General refurbishment needed.
Review 33:Excellent location. Staff fine.
Review 34:Bed rather too hard for my arthritic back.
Review 35:All staff very friendly and helpful, including putting on specially early breakfast for those who needed it. Lovely room decor with all the facilities I'd want.
Review 36:No particularly bad experiences but minor points like variable wifi reception and a slightly run-down appearance. It seems as though improvements have been put in hand but some of the work was obviously a while ago and builders' debris cluttered some parts of the premises.
Review 37:Location was very helpful. Comfy bed. Traditional setting. The food was good and the staff friendly.
Review 38:Minot issue of the bathroom mirror being absent and a light in the bedroom not working but really minor as there were other mirrors and lights!
Review 39:Friendly staff and dog friendly. Great atmosphere. Best cooked breakfast ever!
Review 40:Firstly, a couple of specifics: we missed a mirror in the bathroom; and reading in bed was almost impossible because of poor lighting. In fact, reading anywhere after dark in the room was dim. But I bemoaned the stairs (at 85, lugging my suitcase up was no fun).
Review 41:Overall, we were pleased with the room right at the top of the hotel, with its beams and character. Breakfast was good, dinner not so - but I did enjoy the Sloppy Joes!
Review 42:The staff was extremely accommodating. After we had checked out of our room, they allowed us to take breaks from hiking and play board games in the back dining room area.
Review 43:Original room not clean so offered another not as good, went back request or tour of all rooms, wife picked a replacement, they reduce the bill appropriately would payable double for the originally booked room, not about money
Review 44:Try to fix issues but lacked customer service training
Review 45:The staff were sloppy and had no concept of service. The breakfast was burnt, my vegetarian partner was asked if he wanted black pudding! The toilet leaked There were wires hanging out of the wall The reception area is a disgrace The staff don't know how to deliver customer service
Review 46:The pub is fun and central to the town but that is the only positive.
Review 47:Location was ideal. We had a partial view of the castle. We were very well looked after by the lovely staff. The food was absolutely superb. Loved the open fires and I think the garden would be brilliant in the summer.
Review 48:There were building materials everywhere. A lot of dust in the air. Dirty in places. The shower didn't work. No mirror in the bathroom. No catch on bathroom door. Painters in the hanging cupboard.
Review 49:The breakfast.
Review 50:The hotel was being refurbished when we arrived and not only had we not been told but it looked a mess - everywhere. I paid £100 for the night to find out you can't get wireless in any of the rooms! The beautiful whirlpool bath didn't work and water was only warm coming through the taps. The phone in the bedroom didn't work. We didn't feel it was worth £100 and I needed to work during my stay but couldn't and I was really disappointed. Breakfast - nice but the dining room was freezing. And were the staff bothered? No - they just hap hazzardly apologised as they were rushing off to their grandsons birthday! Left feeling very deflated - not the birthday night I had planned.
Review 51:Comfy bed, beautifully decorated room, lots of nice finishing touches in the bedroom
Review 52:We enjoyed a comfortable night at this charming family-run hotel: a bit quirky maybe, but a refreshing change from faceless chain hotel rooms. Lovely shower room, clearly newly installed. Although we had booked room only, the staff were very helpful in accommodating our request for breakfast at short notice.
Review 53:very disappointed with the general experience...no hot water at first ..then water not hot enough...no food available in the evening !! No heating put on in bedroom for 3 nights!!! We were the only residents......Reception area looked like a bombsite ...workmans tools!! Ladies toilets broke for 2 days....Will not be returning...which is regretable
Review 54:The bed in room 11 was very comfortable....breakfast was pretty good also.
Review 55:For the price we didn't think the quality of the room and breakfast was quite good enough. Fittings in the room were scruffy. no attention to details such as hairdryer, no top up of biscuits on second night. Breakfast was quite mean for the price. Food available restaurant was nothing like described.
Review 56:The location was excellent and useful car parking. Comfortable bed and good shower.
Review 57:Choice of food for evening meal limited and stops serving early. Breakfast starts at 8am although will do a little earlier by request. The premises need a good handyman to do repairs.
Review 58:Friendly staff. Good bed and facilities in the bedroom.
Review 59:Walked into a cobweb in room as arr'd. The 2ndary dbl glazing opened but neither outer window did!! The sink was unclean. The shower from the bath taps had no hook! The fan didn't work so it steamed up the room. The staff were nobheads and breakfast + room poor
Review 60:Grubby carpet, dusty softfurnishings, dated furniture and bedding, flat pillows. Although bathroom has been redecorated, there was no holder for loo roll- had to reach around to get it off top of cistern, no shelf in shower for soap, etc, no bags in sanitary bag dispenser. Tea bags were so stale the tea was undrinkable.
Review 61:Location central to the village. Room on third floor very quiet.
Review 62:Unhelpful manageress - " I wouldn't know how much a taxi back from Hereford would cost as I rarely go" a nice receptionist would ask someone or say "but Ill find out for you" Wifi wasnt working on my visit and I didn't like the policy on hotel - bought- only- food in the rooms - I liked the idea of the packed lunch on the website for my kayaking trip but it was just fully priced items from the bar. would have cost a fortune for a can of coke, baguette, crisps and snickers (that would make a decent packed lunch) So little things really that added up to not recommending to friends. They wouldn't want me back anyway - I flooded the kitchen at 7am as the bath overflow wasnt attached!!....eeeek
Review 63:Nice, helpful caterering staff despite kitchen flood and fab brekky.
Review 64:The morning was a little chaotic as members of staff had not arrived by 08.00 and the breakfast chef had to do everything - which he did well and with good humour.
Review 65:The location was easy to find after a long days walking. The evening meal was good and the staff very helpful. Nice room , quiet and comfortable. The staff were also helpful in giving me a lift back to the point where I stopped walking the previous day.
Review 66:some of the hotel is a bit tired but they are working on it.
Review 67:Refurbished room. Good layout in the room Hotel in good location and central for everything. Will certainly stay again.
Review 68:The hotel was overpriced in comparison to others we stayed in throughout England and Wales. We were charged 125 Pounds for the one night, considerably more than similar quality accommodation we had stayed in on our trip. The hotel does serve a good breakfast but there were no evening meals available. The hotel is adjacent to the local social club, it was a very noisy venue on the night of our stay.
Review 69:The attic room we stayed in had recently been renovated. It was clean and comfortable.
Review 70:Pub was very quiet. The meal booking times were very short and shut earlier than advertised. Original room allocation had not been cleaned, but were moved to a nicer room.
Review 71:Central location, clean, friendly staff.nice pub. Lovely breakfast.
Review 72:Seeing the breakfast chef having a break outside the restaurant window. At least he wasn`t smoking!
Review 73:Lovely room, nice small town, real ale. Good parking, nice beer garden, good views. Excellent
Review 74:The bar area was cold and had flies flying around, and the food didn't look very appealing. No atmosphere in the bar area and not the warm, cosey look it had on its website - was a bit shabby and uninviting. In fact we had planned to eat there but went somewhere else in the end.
Review 75:I liked the position of the and the room was very comfortable although the shower was a bit weak.
Review 76:Rip off prices for drinks - glass of wine and pint of lager cost over £10! Run down décor in hotel. Noisy social club across the road which empties out at 11.00 pm with much foul language.
Review 77:This hotel has an ideal location at the heart of Hay on Wye.
Review 78:Curtains did not cover the windows and the big light shone in. It was over the outside bar so the drunks kept us awake. Breakfast was not ready on time and was very ordinary.
Review 79:Room had been renovated. Very nice bathroom.
Review 80:Their food service was very poor. I ordered something, the (apparently new) waitress forgot to give the order to someone, then when it finally arrived, it lacked one item (per menu, coleslaw)-ordered a burger, with fries. New waitress made a comment out loud to others there, when I ordered only a lemonade instead of a drink. And the same, when I asked for a glass of milk to take upstairs to bed. The person who checked me in, not the owner, tended to display an attitude, perhaps it was her age-she made a comment at one point, inappropriate for someone dealing with the public, I would think, kind of a snotty remark.
Review 81:The room was good, clean, with a nice bathroom. The lady of the manor, so to speak, was an extrovert and friendly to talk to.
Review 82:These are minor matters, but it might help Kilverts score more highly with other clients if a little more attention was paid to slightly dodgy light fittings, bathroom fixtures and the actual provision of the advertised flat screen TV.
Review 83:The staff were unfailingly friendly and welcoming and made us feel personally valued - not mere customers. We will be happy to return, quite possible with other friends/family.
Review 84:Paper thin walls and ceiling meant quite a lot of noise from room above. Not good if you are a light sleeper.
Review 85:Very pleasant receptionist on arrival. Cosy, clean en suite room. Well stocked with tea/coffee/biscuits and toiletries. Bath was an added bonus after walking Offas Dyke all day. Freshly cooked hot breakfast was lovely.
Review 86:Only negative was a singing foreign lady out side the window at 3 in the morning. So you do have to bear in mind the central location . Bucket of water would have been handy at that point.
Review 87:Friendly staff and locals. Room was clean and nice size. No TV , not sure if that's good or bad?? Very comfy bed. Good quality breakfast in the morning.
Review 88:Nothing really notable not to like. The character buidling perhaps is a little tired. Could do with sharpening up.
Review 89:Great location in the centre of town near all the book shops etc, Comfortable rooms - stayed in 2 different rooms in our 2 night trip - liked the suite, being spacious, with a super king bed and super views. Great breakfast too.
Review 90:Bed quite creaky and would not be comfortable for two

Review 107:Great location in the heart of the village with a quintessential English pub and BnB feel.
Review 108:Warm welcome Lovely room Great location Cracking breakfast
Review 109:Beautiful bedroom. Very friendly staff
Review 110:The mattress was broken down and very uncomfortable. The bathroom smelled like the gas from the drains were vented into it.
Review 111:Not very good wifi coverage!
Review 112:Loved the room.
Review 113:too noisy. People drinking ad laughing until gone 1 am...I couldnt sleep. Rooms at the back of hotel may have been ok
Review 114:nice place
Review 115:Too expensive for the service provided
Review 116:The location, the effort at decoration, the shower
Review 117:The only small niggle was that the was no hook for the shower head so it had to be used by hand.
Review 118:Great breakfast
Review 119:Location and the building/room.
