Reviews for Great Victoria Hotel

Review 1:It was very cold in the room Dirty bathroom and window sill as well as the floor boards Cushions and covers very uncomfortable Tv too old and don't work properly Radiators were in a separate small room as the room we stayed in was split in two So the bed side was cold and the other side warm Staff very strange

Review 2:Second stay at this hotel, really like the interior design and their bar offers good deals

Review 3:A few things didn't work quite as they should and I could have done with an extra blanket.

Review 4:Staff were friendly and helpful and the room looked nicely done

Review 5:Bar floor was very dangerous , lots of broken tiles, on the night of the 8th at 4ish in the night we were woken by the phone someone wanted the reception . Just managed to get to sleep an around 7 ish we were woke again by fire alarm . Panick set in we were grabbing clothes to put on when it suddenly stopped we rang the reception to be told someone had a shower on 4 th floor an set alarm off . We basically we had very little sleep an a 4/5 hour drive in front of us . This was not good . Would we stay again NO we want somewhere we can get a good nights sleep with out alarms an phones going off

Review 6:To be honest, we had a very unsettling incident occur whilst staying in this hotel which has probably put us off booking again there. At 5.30am we were woken by aggressive banging on the door which to be honest frightened us to death, especially being pensioners. I opened the door, fearing it was an emergency, and standing in front of me and shouting agressively was a black young man, wearing all black clothing and demanding to know our room number and name. I refused him this at first but he became even more agressive and I did give him our name and room number. He said the receptionist had sent him to find out! I immediately rang reception, but had to put the phone down as it was not answered for a good few rings. The male receptionist did call me back however and when I explained what had happened he apologised and tried to explain how this had occurred. In this day and age such occurences believe me are very intimidating and frightening, especially as I say we are OAPs. Perhaps security should be tightened in this hotel. I would be pleased if you would pass the contenst of this email on the the hotel management. I am presently deliberating whether to put the incident on Trip Advisor. Although, our visit was to attend a family funeral, we had celebrated our wedding here by having our reception some 44 years ago, so we were actually looking forward to staying there!!!!

Review 7:Returning to my home City after 27 years it was lovely to hear Yorkshire accents and to be fair the staff we're very polite and accommodating. However, please read 'what we didn't like' as this is very important.

Review 8:Breakfast on Christmas Day and Boxing Day was very poor-only a few items on the buffet and the cooked breakfast well below par.Room not seviced one day but we did get an apologetic note and some chocolates from the housekeeper! Room too warm during the night-this seems to be a common complaint about the Great Victoria.

Review 9:Excellent location-reasonably good value.

Review 10:As a budget hotel the food is perfectly ok. Yet people are not drawn to the restaurant. I've been there on a Monday and Thursday and have been one of only two people each time??

Review 11:I love this hotel's grandness of days past and class on a budget. For the rooms and service I highly recommend it.

Review 12:Only downfall was the hotel window would not open an when we asked to be moved best thing they said they could do was give us a fan witch we won't happy about they could of just moved us

Review 13:Nice hotel to stay at would consider staying again staff was polite in reception it was clean to standards

Review 14:We had semi broken blinds in the bathroom, bent out of shape on the ends but they pulled and dropped like new.

Review 15:The staff are really friendly and warming, the room was very nice.. Definitely my hotel of choice next time i stay in Bradford.

Review 16:Had vehicle broken into in hotel car park. Not a lot of help from staff as if could no care less.

Review 17:Central location with car park. Helpful staff clean rooms and good filling breakfast

Review 18:The Hotel is qute dated and needs a facelift. The bathroom was very old fashioned and the bath side so high I was unable to use it. In hindsight should have requested a room with a shower.Minor things like loose fittings in the bathroom nothing major,

Review 19:Have stayed before and always enjoyed our time at the Hotel. As ex residents of Bradford are familiar with the area.

Review 20:Everything was dated and falling apart. The amount of dust in the room was appalling, and cracked tiles in the bathroom, tap for the sink was so loose you could take it off with your hand. I also shower door was extremely narrow. And don't get me started on the lift!

Review 21:Price and staff

Review 22:I commented on another stay at this hotel, but forgot to mention some things. Wi Fi was unreliable: it was on and off, and one constantly had to switch between different connections in order to eventually find one. Elevator didn't work, and I had to drag my suitcases up many steps in this big hotel (of course staff offered help). The wood on the outer windows was peeling, basically never been painted or maintained; in some rooms these outer windows would open, and in others they won't. Instead of renovation, they put inner plastic windows which were broken again, and if you're lucky they might have a handle or open. I was "lucky" I got a room with window that opened by two centimeters, so I got some fresh air - can't imagine having slept with the unregulatable heating on. Pictures you see on this site have nothing to do with reality.

Review 23:Location, building, staff, bed big and comfortable, size of room and bathroom, some sense of antiquity.

Review 24:The room was too small; no minibar, cold and hot water taps are separate so it is hard to get warm water.

Review 25:The location is really good just next to the train station. Old building, hisorical.

Review 26:This must have been a splendid hotel a 100 years ago. Now everything is dilapidated. I was given a room where windows won't open; upon complaint, given another one. The window there opened only barely; I was told that, if need of more air, I'd receive a fan (?!). Window handles were all broken, toilet barely flushed, everything's falling apart, with little effort toward maintenance. Hallway carpets were stained, couldn't regulate the heating; overall experience was not that of comfort, although the room and bathroom were spacious and clean enough. Hotel asks of a 50 GBP deposit toward damages. Staff were helpful, doing their best given the state of hotel.

Review 27:Location of the hotel, historic value of the building.

Review 28:Heating was not working in the first room we were given so the lady moved us to a different room. However not working in that room either.

Review 29:Fab location couldn't ask for better. Staff were very helpful. This was the second time we have stayed here in the space of 3 months and we will be back again.

Review 30:The heating wasn't working tel they fix I got cold from that night I ask for hair dryer it wasn't in the room the cleaner transsexual women say I am sure it was there I felt like she is ecuseing me if I am liyng

Review 31:It was good location

Review 32:I returned here aftet about 8 years, it used to be a olace i enjoyed coming to. Staff around the hotel never smile, very gloomy, building is stunning however the windows are very noisy, called for help with the matter and they jus stuffed towels down the window. Room was ok... nothing to jump about. I was excited to tuck into food and it was bland and the staff didnt really know what to do with the trays after... bit disappointed after I remember it being very well run and the staff were great.... don't think il be returning

Review 33:Location was good

Review 34:The heating was on constantly and the window only opened by a centimetre. The decoration looks a bit tired with cracks in the plaster. The shower screen kept folding in away from the bath and against the person showering. No irons in the room.

Review 35:Right across the road from the train station so easy access to Leeds for an evening out. Five minutes walk to the shopping centre too. Big comfy king-size bed, and seemed clean enough. It is a lovely old building and parking is free.

Review 36:Breakfast below standards. Uncomfortable bathroom with noisy plumbing. Very old room with windows that can hardly open. In desperate need of restauraties.

Review 37:Friendly staff

Review 38:I attempted to book for a further stay but the booking confirmation which I received was wrong. When I attempted to explain this staff were rude and inflexible, refusing to honour my initial booking.

Review 39:Lift was out of order. Some parts of the room look a little tired but this is more than made up for by the plus points including excellent value for money

Review 40:I always stay here when working in Bradford City Centre. Good free parking: lovely building: helpful staff

Review 41:Extremely noisy until 2am, we could hear the words to every song with the windows shut - earplugs are essential The place was quite run down. It would be a beautiful place with some basic DIY We felt like we were part of last night's wedding at breakfast - the staff could not be bothered with us at all The room was far too hot with no temperature control

Review 42:The location is great

Review 43:Due to event on day they was no parking on site. Had to park in the bowling car par which was exspensive and when you have bags have to travlle a bit in the rain to get to the hotel.

Review 44:Special Ocassion booked 4th flour double. Was amazing room. Staff on fourth floor n cleanners were great. Room 406 defo best room on that floor i seen so far.

Review 45:The rooms

Review 46:The staff were lovely apart from that what a terrible place to stay the rooms are disgusting and the windows actually are bolted on and no fresh air can get in

Review 47:The lift was out of order on my most recent visit and on my previous visit, 3 months earlier. I was on the top floor. WiFi very unreliable. Loud music playing till 1am. Window in room wouldn't close properly.

Review 48:Very nice room with an impressive large walk-in shower.

Review 49:The hotel room heating was on throughout the whole night since we arrived and we couldn't turn the heating down. The windows would not open as they were permanently sealed due to excessive heat in the room we had to check out at 6am instead of 10 am. The staff couldn't help as the heating was not controlled by the staff. Due to the intense heat in the bedroom me and my wife didn't get a wink of sleep and really struggled. Overall we are disgusted with regards to this and couldn't enjoy out stay, I would never recommend this hotel to anyone. We have used many hotels in the past 8 years and this is the first complaint in 8 years. Iv had a headache for 2 days due to lack of sleep.

Review 50:The fact that is was nice and quite

Review 51:Far too hot all over the hotel. Rooms too hot and thermostats on radiators not working. Plumbing not good - noisy and old

Review 52:Staff are friendly, especially Lynn in reception

Review 53:The lift was out of action which was a blow as my wife at present isn't very mobile. Manager did say this should have been informed to us on arrival or before.the window blew out in the night which could have been dangerous to day the least.

Review 54:Purpose of visit was a family birthday. Hotel was where we were supposed to have our wedding reception years ago.Location good as opposite train station for Leeds.

Review 55:Lovely Victorian building with lots of quirky features, we have stayed many times and love it. It's in the town centre and everything is easily accessible. Lovely friendly staff too.

Review 56:The lifts were not working all weekend and although the staff at reception were very apologetic it didn't help that our 3 rooms were on 2nd, 3rd and 4th floor. My mum has severe knee problems, arthritis and swelling so she really struggled to get up and down. It was also difficult carrying luggage without a lift so we had to make a couple of trips on the flights of stairs. I would highly recommend the hotel to have maintenance cover over the weekend as they would need to have a contingency in place for disabled/wheelchair users etc who have limited mobility. Lifts should not have been out for more than a couple of hours. Girl at reception said this has happened several times in the 7 weeks she's been working at hotel so it's clearly an ongoing issue. It would have been nice to have served breakfast rather than a buffet with only one choice of egg which was scrambled. Had to wait 10-15 minutes for hot water dispenser to be refilled so that I could make tea.

Review 57:Hotel located in city centre therefore busy and lively place. Nice decor in hotel.

Review 58:The room was cold as rad having problems, this was rectified with fan heater. No power point for kettle which meant we had to plug in on bedside cabinet.walls had been given an extra coat of paint but sadly only three quarters had been finished/ or the painter could only reach to that height !.We could not bathe or shower as bath full of muck and dirt which had come up the plug hole to around 3inches high after flushing the loo .We reported this to the front desk but no one came so therefore we had to attend our evening function without bathing. On leaving for our function we reported the matter again and then a cleaner was sent up when we were out.

Review 59:nice staff,friendly.

Review 60:Lift was out of operation didn't affect us as we had a room on the first floor but could have been an issue to less able guests

Review 61:location was ideal for our trip to the theatre just across the road.

Review 62:The broken window on the entrance door. The broken lift. Our request for lowest floor room ignored and given a second floor room. Room outside window unable to shut. No pepper in three cruets. Need I go on

Review 63:Location and helpful staff

Review 64:Disabled parking is non existent. There were some bays but paint faded and no-one can see them. Meant there is a LONG walk from car to reception. Lift not working meant 3 flights of stairs to first floor and long corridor to room. Not nice if disabled. Food delivered for room service was cold. Room was over function room so heard disco till early hours.

Review 65:Comfortable bed and hot running water

Review 66:We was just in very uncomfortable room the rooms toilet flush didn't work the water Was yellow for an while and the shower did not work but was aware of the shower

Review 67:- Lift wasn't in operation so all guests had to use the stairs to reach their rooms. I managed OK even though my room was on the 4th floor and I'm not as young as I was! However there were other guests I saw struggling including one gentleman with crutches... - Breakfast was served in the Bar rather than the Restaurant and unfortunately the experience wasn't quite up to the excellent standard of previous visits, e.g. coffee ran out and (despite assurances) had not been replenished by the time I had finished eating.

Review 68:I've stayed at the Great Victoria a number of times in recent years - great location, really helpful staff, and remains excellent value for money.

Review 69:Broken lift. Broken exit door. Room too hot then too cold by end of stay, although extra heater and duvet was provided and used. No sleep on Saturday night due to evening party below and morning noise from room upstairs. Good breakfast.

Review 70:Very friendly helpful staff.

Review 71:Could not find the car park - had to phone the hotel to be told it was on a different road (Not Bridge Street where the main entrance was). Wi-Fi would not work in our bedroom. Bed was uncomfortable.

Review 72:staff were helpful. Car park (operated by a token at the exit) was free.

Review 73:Room was a little cold, and the restaurant's food wasn't as good as I would have expected for the price. Lift was out of order too which was a little frustrating as I was on the 2nd floor, but the staff carried my bags up for me which was a nice compromise.

Review 74:Beautiful room, comfy bed, helpful staff

Review 75:The décor was rather gloomy. There is a need for redecorating; it's rather shabby in places. The big disadvantage while I was there was that the lift was being replaced and the clamber to the third floor was a bit much. That will be over soon, one imagines. No hot water in my bath but OK in shower and sink. (room 315)

Review 76:The staff were often jolly and helpful. I liked the some of the period detail.

Review 77:My stay at this hotel was nice and peaceful, breakfast was well worth paying for a little extra in my included price... Great food! Staff were polite and helpful.

Review 78:My room was very tired, the bathroom was in a bad state with water damage to the ceiling and a screwed in wooden panel that looked like it was a temporary repair someone started but never completed. The tap on the sink was looses, you needed two hands to operate it, one to hold it still and the other to turn it on.

Review 79:Friendly staff, good location, good breakfast

Review 80:Bathroom not brilliant, in the sense of cleanliness, excellent if you're only showering, not very good for baths as I felt they were a bit grubby.

Review 81:Beds lovely and snug, Breakfast is fantastic, very varied and staff are very helpful and friendly.

Review 82:Always a disappointment that it is a buffet breakfast where you have to make your own toast and brew your own coffee. Expected better from a good hotel

Review 83:The hotel was excellent and the rooms were beautiful

Review 84:The room was not at all as expected after looking at photos before booking the carpet was dirty the bathroom sink & floor tiles were cracked and the ceiling was all stained as if had a leak wardrobe draws were all broken

Review 85:Lady on reception was very friendly and breakfast staff very good

Review 86:INternet did not work at all, i notified the staff and nothing was done. This ruined the trip for me and I wont go back

Review 87:Comfortable, roomy, great staff, great location.

Review 88:Roof was leaking badly in our room. Must have been known about as the floor was badly stained. Drain was blocked in the bathroom. Carpet was badly water stained.

Review 89:Location was good. Easy to walk to town. Nice period features.

Review 90:We had to change rooms 3 times, the first was awful, hadn't been decorated in years and was told it was a 'family suite' and was more like a box room, the second was like an oven due to radiator being stuck on and the general manager was to busy to get it sorted, the third was a nice room but directly above a wedding party with banging music till 1am. Bearing in mind I was travelling with a 1 year old and my pregnant wife this was pretty unacceptable. I had the option before we arrived to upgrade to the fourth floor but was told these rooms weren't appropriate if staying with young children. Definitely wouldn't advise staying here if there is a wedding on because the hotel just cant cope with additional guests on top of the wedding guests.

Review 91:The reception staff were brilliant, extremely friendly and helpful.

Review 92:Windows broken and dangerous to pedestrians below. Hard to open but room was very hot. Lift not working. No gym (advertised) and poor TV reception.

Review 93:Location amazing, surroundings were very grand and historic. Staff very helpful through most very new. Bathroom was also very grand and bed comfy. Breakfast was wonderful and bar food and service good.

Review 94:The bath was not clean, the fan in the bathroom did not work and one chair was worn out. Very salty, cool cooked breakfast on the first day so I ordered a mushroom omelette the second day but got a plain omelette instead.

Review 95:The location is great. The bed was comfortable. Breakfast was reasonably priced. The staff were friendly. I got two good nights sleep.

Review 96:Rooms are a bit dated & the Wi-Fi (which was one of the main reasons we booked this hotel) was very poor!

Review 97:The staff where very good. The parking & location were excellent!

Review 98:Poor wifi - fine signal but little bandwidth even for basic websites.

Review 99:Very comfortable hotel just opposite Bradford Interchange and beside St George's Hall. The room was spacious, clean and quiet. Really tasty and generous breakfast. Good value for money.

Review 100:Room in need of a refurb, walls and carpets marked although housekeeping did their best! Very poor blackout so room very light all night.

Review 101:The Staff, Breakfast and the location

Review 102:I had 2 Evening Meals, first was served quickly and both courses very tasty. Unfortunately, the following night I was due at an event in 90 minutes so arrived in The Restaurant early, only 2 tables were occupied so expected quick sevice, there was no mention of a Function or that there would be a delay. Ordered Steak Medium Rare with Fries (No Sauce or anything extra) plus Creme Brule' both quick to prepare. 50 minutes later still waiting for my Steak and no explanation for delay, asked Waitress what was wrong and the Steak arrived more well done than medium. As I had a long night ahead, I eat what I could then waited for Dessert, another 15 minutes, no sign of this, paid for first course reluctantly and left

Review 103:Staff very friendly, efficient and happy to help. I can only comment on Room 320 which, although it overlooks the Bus Station, was quiet. Being Victorian means you get wonderful high ceilings, wide corridors and no 'cramped in' feeling like many Ccurrent Hotels. Room was clean and comfortable with large Bathroom. Although the Bath Taps didn't work, the Shower was perfect, lots of power if needed and easily controlled. Breakfast is Buffet Style with usual Hot and Cold Choice. Anything you don't see , just ask a member of Staff and it'a served quickly

Review 104:General appearance a little tired. Rooms catch a bit of noise from neighbouring rooms and my room caught a lot of bar noise(it was Friday night)

Review 105:Friendly staff, in town centre, good parking.

Review 106:Shower was too hot even on cold... Didn't let us use microwave to warm food up

Review 107:We stayed at at fourth floor bedroom... Spacious room... Clean.. comfy... Breakfast was nice... Staff were friendly

Review 108:The hotel wasn't very clean and the bed was uncomfortable. The sink wasn't draining the water properly and the shower was a bit dirty. Overall I wouldn't recommend.

Review 109:Elevator was broken, room on the fourth floor. Airconditioner was broken, staff told us that was a known issue but "people don't know how it works anyways", they offered to bring a fan up to the room. This turned out to be an industrial type fan, with paint all over and the sound of an airplane coming over the roof. In the evening and the morning there was no warm water. Staff told us to wait for half an hour, then it would work. Three hours later it did. When we could finally get in there, dirty lines showed on the shower tray. Finally, breakfast was quite greasy. We will not come back ever again.

Review 110:Friendly staff, though they could not get anything done. Free upgrade to a fourth floor boutique room

Review 111:The only thing I didn't like was Breakfast could have been a little bit more organised It would be better with service at the table instead of self service the breakfast was over cooked and not very hot with other guests leaving the lids up on the heating plates. all the serving spoons was mixed up which not good for anyone with allergies! Cross contamination. (the reason I think service to the table would be better)

Review 112:The wonderful welcome from reception staff very friendly and helpful cleanliness of our room and very comfortable

Review 113:Water in the sink took time to drain and kept filling up, Breakfast was very bland and not hot, tea and coffee was only not hot just warm

Review 114:Staff very nice, room was great, free parking free WiFi

Review 115:Room given was not as updated as seen in pictures but that can be ignored as that really did not matter.

Review 116:Nice, clean, courteous staff and value for money. Would surely recommend a stay here.

Review 117:The evening receptionist when I arrived was less than helpful when I asked if the room I'd been allocated was a 'quiet room'. Her reply was 'I've no idea'.

Review 118:I stay here all the time and love the comfort, space and history of the building. The morning receptionist was lovely and friendly and recognised my from my last stay there, asking how I was. Looking forward to my stay here in December as I visit family for Christmas.

Review 119:The lift was broken down and had to climb stairs with luggage. It got better the next day briefly, and broke down again, and remained so till we left ( stayed for two nights).

Review 120:Location and the ease to get to St George's Hall where we attended a concert. Free Parking and free WiFi was great facilities.

Review 121:Lift was broken and was told in arrival that it had been for months but we were not made aware of this at booking and struggled with the stairs greatly

Review 122:Location was excellent bed was comfortable

Review 123:Nothing really but if I had to be picky I would have liked to see a better selection of fresh fruit at breakfast.

Review 124:Great location for Alhambra Theatre, media museum and will be for new shopping centre when it opens.

Review 125:the room was booked for my brother and sister in law on their wedding night - the staff were exceptionally helpful to me in advance of the day in sorting out this gift.

Review 126:Rooms too hot Lift broken Room was run down looking Windows wouldn't open Decor was awful Basically felt like two nights spent in a cell.

Review 127:Good location

Review 128:No Airconditioning and it was warm, a fan was provided without fuss. Feature bath took so long to fill but was nice. Ate in the resturaunt and paid in full only to later find they are affiliated with Tastecard and could of received 50% off - no advertisement or request for this on ordering. Breakfast buffet , food not as warm as it could be.

Review 129:Staff were more than friendly Room was very clean and feature bath lovely. Bed very comfy, didnt want to get up :) Food was lovely Location fab for St Georges Hall, literally opposite. Lots of places i would never re-visit , this is one I definately will. Great selection for breakfast. Free parking

Review 130:Impractical shower although it looked all elegant not very practical to have a large shower head hanging off the roof. Fine if you want your hair wet and not a quick shower to freshen up

Review 131:Free upgrade to 4th floor bedroom. They definitely worth the extra price if your away for leisure.

Review 132:The first room I was in the window borke, I was moved into another room where the toilet did not work properly. The lift in yhe hotel was broken I requested an iron 3 times and never got one, the staff didnt seem to care and the food at breakfast was not very good

Review 133:No lift!! They said 'temporarily out of order' and ' be repaired soon' but they said that when I stayed there in February!!? I won't stay again until they confirm it is working. 3rd floor is too high to walk for me, even if they offer to carry my case for me!!

Review 134:Nice people. Nice location. Nice room. Nice breakfast.

Review 135:Bathroom window had blinds which covered up an aweful lot of dirt and grime. The lift was out of order and staying on the 2nd floor was a challenge.

Review 136:Staff were helpful and the facilities were what one would expect for the cost. The breakfast was very good.

Review 137:This is a great hotel with hard working staff. The décor throughout the public areas of the hotel is of a reasonably good standard however, I visit the hotel on a reasonably regular basis, on the last two occasions the lift has been out of order. The rooms are beginning to be a little tired with a number of repairs being needed. The shower door was hanging loose in room 102 and the bathroom was in poor state. TV was very, very old. These relatively minor things do let the hotel down.

Review 138:The location is the best in town, close to the train and bus station. Also close to all the best bars, restaurants and the theatre. Parking is excellent

Review 139:everything was old, dusty and dirty in the room (dirty carpet, dirty windows, smell, no possibility to open the window, the toilet flushing did not work, bed was old and uncomfortable - we did not sleep the whole 2 nights, that we´ve spent at this hotel). We would give this hotel max. 2 stars.

Review 140:lift wasnt working but was advised of this prior

Review 141:Lovly hotel very clean excellant value for money staff very courteous great breakfast included large comfortable bed no noise during the nite room 410 over looked courts would stay here again

The Fine Print

Please note the lift is not accessible on the fourth floor.
