Seven Stars

Seven Stars descritpion
Set in the beautiful Welsh countryside, this characteristic 16th century building has been transformed into a comfortable guesthouse, while still maintaining many of its original features, including oak beams and thick stone walls.
Centrally located within Hay-on-Wye, famous for being the ‘second-hand book capital of the world’, during your stay you can explore the town’s arts, crafts and ‘eccentric’ shops. Also nearby you can find the beautiful cathedral city of Hereford, Brecon with its canal and cathedral, and local castles, such as Raglan.
Recommended by WHICH? Good Bed & Breakfast Guide, the Seven Stars boasts comfortable surroundings in which you can completely relax. Take a refreshing dip in the indoor swimming pool and rejuvenate in the sauna before unwinding in the guest lounge.

Reviews for Seven Stars
Review 1:Cleanliness could have been better; for example wash basin waste was clogged with hair on arrival. TV didn't work. No ventilation in bathroom other than a velux window which could not be opened without standing on WC.
Review 2:Friendly staff. Excellent location. Indoor pool was great and breakfast was good.
Review 3:The heating seemed to be erratic. Would like to have known when coming on/going off. All doors need attention, hard to open/close.
Review 4:Breakfast very good, sauna/ pool also good, staff very friendly
Review 5:We liked everything!
Review 6:This is a lovely place, beautiful rooms, cozy, clean and the friendly staff. This is the place we choose every time we go to Hay on Wye.
Review 7:We stayed in Hay for a long weekend and after a gap of 3 years had the pleasure to stay at the Seven Stars again. Di, the owner, and the rest of the team were very welcoming as always, the place is clean and tidy. Our room on the top floor was comfortable and with an amazing view. There is a great swimming pool and sauna available and after a long day's walking in the Welsh Hills these were very welcome. Add in a delicious good breakfast and a very central location and the Seven Stars is a really great place to stay. Highly recommended.
Review 8:The location of this B n B is perfect in the most beautiful setting of Hay on Wye Owner and staff extremely welcoming, helpful and hospitable Family Room is perfectly adequate and comfortable ( wi - fi great ) The breakfast had plenty of choice and was absolutely delicious ! Swimming pool (and sauna )was a great bonus for us and our 7 year old Very happy customers !
Review 9:This old coach house was built in the1600's, It has loads of character, and the staff where so friendly and very happy to help, in any way they can. It also has a swimming pool and sauna at the back of the property, and a good sized car park. The Inn is situated right in the very center of Hay-on-Wye. Well known as the book capital of the world. And the stunning views of the surrounding country side is only a short walk in any direction. The book shops and antiques shop are amazing too. I would happily recommend this old inn to anyone.
Review 10:Don't expect the Ritz.Tight but manageable parking.
Review 11:Excellent breakfast.. friendly staff..ideal location..swimming pool and sauna unexpected bonus for a B&B..good price
Review 12:Guest lounge was locked in the evening when we returned so nowhere to sit with our friends. Milk was off at breakfast. Sausages poor quality, eggs overdone. Swimming pool was not for sole use of guests as local children gathered for swimming lessons (not clear from website). Overall quite dated and shabby.
Review 13:location and parking. Good shower.
Review 14:Why such a teeny ,weeny basin in the en suite when room for a larger one ?
Review 15:Very pleasant owner ,. Very well situated for access to the town .Enjoyed our stay .
Review 16:Not a big deal, but the breakfast room is a bit gloomy.
Review 17:Lovely to have a swim and sauna at the end of each day.Staff were very friendly and approachable. Breakfast was very good.
Review 18:Very helpful and friendly staff who, when for the room to which we had been assigned (having booked on line) turned out to be hazardous for a tall guest's head (i.e. this particular room had low 16th century beams!), arranged for us to move to another room - even though this meant negotiating a swap with another guest (who very kindly agreed).
Review 19:Though generally very quiet, there was some droning from the pool equipment which was noticeably in the early hours.
Review 20:Great, genuine friendly service all nice. Very well cooked breakfast. Pool & sauna. Room 8 is unique, opens directly onto poolside, plus little patio area. Central location, great for walking round town. Comfortable room, everything worked properly and some nice touches, original painting, etc.
Review 21:Because of the access to the pool from room 8 there was a lot of noise at times.
Review 22:Good Value , friendly staff and a very good breakfast. Room 8 was small but had direct access to the pool.
Review 23:My only minor concern was the shower temperature in our room which swung constantly between very hot and freezing cold.
Review 24:The twin room beds were comfortable and the swimming pool and sauna were excellent. Nothing like a steam and swim to unwind after a long day of hiking. The staff were very friendly and breakfast was enjoyable.
Review 25:None
Review 26:Excellent b&b in centre of Hay. Staff very welcoming, lovely cosy characterful room (small double) perfect for one, but still large enough for two. Very nice breakfast - nothing too much trouble. Residents parking a big plus for Hay and Diane very kindly let me leave my car in the car park till lunchtime after I had checked out. Thank you!
Review 27:The room was on the front at the same level and about 30 yards from the town clock. It chimes every quarter of an hour through the night and is not quiet. I contemplated getting up and leaving at 2.0am.
Review 28:Location and the owner rang us to warn us that the cheap rate room was the only one available and was very small.
Review 29:Our first room, room 3, was far too small for any couple and should be offered as a single room only, and for very short stays, as there is no floor space and virtually no hanging/drawer space. A bit grubby in places as well. But the staff gave us the upstairs family room and dealt with the problem quickly, efficiently and with a smile. Recommended for walkers.
Review 30:I'm reviewing this as one of a couple walking the Offa's Dyke Path, staying 2 nights. Requirements: A warm room, good, hot shower, space to hang wet/muddy clothes, hairdryer, toiletries, good breakfast and a place to eat very nearby. The staff were kind, friendly and helpful, tumble dried our wet clothes and gave us a much bigger room for the next night. Breakfast excellent. Lounge space. Pool and Sauna (we didn't use it). Ate at the Blue Boar up the road; good first night, but when the Londoners leave on Sunday, you get forgotten on the Monday.
Review 31:Fabulous B&B ideally situated in centre of town. We were greeted by Chrissie, who gave a great welcome and so friendly, a wealth of knowledge on Town cuisine, . The breakfast is amazing. Served by Debbie, avery relaxed stay. Will definitely stay here again.
Review 32:There was nothing we didn't like!
Review 33:Fabulous owner & staff, very friendly. Room excellent, we had a family room for myself and two teenagers, it was ideal. Swimming pool a great bonus. Hotel centrally located so perfect for shops, cafes & restaurant.
Review 34:Nothing really. If I had to be really picky, the wifi reception was a bit hit and miss.
Review 35:Loved the location, central to Hay on Wye so access to plenty of places to eat and drink within walking distance. We were in a lovely little room above the swimming pool and it was very quiet and away from the building. The room was clean and decorated lovely. The vegetarian breakfast was amazing and set us off for a good start to the day.
Review 36:Wifi connection was awful. When I eventually managed to get connected it was very slow. I don't know if this is an isolated problem with this place or the general area as I struggled to get Wifi where ever I went. The swimming pool was great to use however it would be useful if they provided towels just for pool use as having to use the same towel for everything became a problem as they never had time to dry out completely.
Review 37:Location is ideal for local restaurants and bars. Staff were very helpful and friendly. Awesome breakfast.
Review 38:The staff are super welcoming and friendly. We were arriving late and they called to give us very detailed description of where the keys will be left/hidden and where to go. When we entered the property they even left signs with our name and pointing arrows which way it is to our room..
Review 39:The owner was very welcoming and could not have done more for us. Was very pet friendly. We spent our wedding night there and were very impressed with standard of service and facilities to hand. Fantastic sauna and pool. We will return again, can thoroughly recommend.
Review 40:Quirky bathroom because up in roof. Very small shower, temperature kept changing unpredictably. No towel rails. Breakfast: cooked breakfast fine, would have liked proper selection of fresh fruit (not just melon), and yogurts. Stewed fruit doesn't do it for me.
Review 41:Private parking, friendly welcome when arrived, beds comfortable.
Review 42:No bad experiences. The room was a bit of a squeeze but understandable if accommodating dogs.
Review 43:The staff are so friendly. Nothing is a problem. Very accommodating. Breakfast superb. Would go back. Swimming pool and sauna great.
Review 44:Proprietor was always in a rush to take breakfast orders. She walked away while I was still discussing breakfast only for her to get the order wrong...Too quick slow down then maybe you wont smash plates all the time. Also she disclosed info about her private life for all to hear!!!!! Very unprofessional, her pricing was extremely high so I expected a better standard of service...
Review 45:Location to Hay on Wye town centre and parking on site.
Review 46:Very effective, efficient and welcoming throughout. Truly superb breakfast offering - highly recommend the kippers and the haddock. Very good on-site parking - a real bonus in HoW!
Review 47:A lovely friendly, relaxed place in an excellent location. Use of the pool is an added bonus. I've been coming here for many years and still really enjoy it.
Review 48:Bathrooms need a makeover, room close to the pool is very small, family room is crowded once you are in - and you still have to add the luggage.
Review 49:Great pool, very close to the centre
Review 50:Only disappointment was that the pool does not open until 9.00 a.m. and breakfast is served between 8.30 a.m. and 9.30 a.m., so you can't really go for a swim. When I asked why the pool didn't open until 9.00 a.m., it is because there are bedrooms next to it. A shame though, maybe could give a longer window for breakfast.
Review 51:Very helpful and friendly staff, great location.
Review 52:A fridge in the room would have been good.
Review 53:Great location in hay-on-wye and the added bonus of a pool and sauna made this a real treat while celebrating a friends wedding. Breakfast was superb and the staff were really friendly. Our room above the pool was lovely and well equipped with all we needed, plus fairly modern and a nice surprise compared to some of the images on the booking.com website.
Review 54:Because of my arthritic ankles and knee I found the stairs awkward but that would not stop my wife and i visiting again.
Review 55:Being able to leave our car in your car park while we mooched around. Our room was quiet and comfortable. Lots of hot water in the shower. I wish I'd brought my swimming kit! I expected the usual stamp size pool.
Review 56:The room was tiny ... Only just enough room to get out of bed either side! And no space to store our suitcases or bags so quite dangerous when manoeuvring round the room. Decor and bathroom very jaded.
Review 57:Friendly staff. Good breakfast
Review 58:Room 4 a little 'dated', big bath but no shower curtain & nowhere to hang the shower head so water spaying all over etc
Review 59:Great breakfast & very friendly and helpful staff
Review 60:We didn't have breakfast as we had toes r too early so we don't know what the food is like but the dining room seemed a bit dark and not very inviting
Review 61:Staff and location
Review 62:The clock on the tower opposite rand the 1/4, 1/2 & 3/4 hour as well as the hour - 24/7. We managed to close the window but it was loud especially at 4am
Review 63:This B&B is right in the middle of the town so you're in the heart of the action. We were made most welcome by Di and her trusty crew. Our room was at the top of the building with lovely views - front and back. Breakfast was tops with excellent coffee.
Review 64:The single beds were too soft for our personal preferences, but the double was firmer.
Review 65:We enjoyed our stay as a group in the family room in the attic -- and appreciated the tidy and well-designed bathroom.
Review 66:room was small for the price bathroom small but it is an old house
Review 67:right in the middle of Hay the breakfast choice was excellent and well cooked and presented
Review 68:Not being able to stay longer!
Review 69:The friendliness of the staff made this trip perfect. The room was perfectly located for me as I have mobility problems. Brekky was superb, and the room was everything we needed.
Review 70:Friendly - like staying with family. Lovely to pass the time of day. Good old building with plenty of character. Convenient for the town, and a great place to "people watch"!
Review 71:Duvet cover was a little small for my liking, but room was warm and inviting so my feet were not left out in the cold!
Review 72:Very friendly, helpful staff, lots of suggestions for eating and drinking. Breakfast was perfect, good portions & nicely cooked. We are keen cyclists so a good breakfast is important. Hotels sauna and pool was added attraction for after a days activity. Parking facilities are great too.
Review 73:Tatty room unlike the ones pictured on the website. Room was dirty with someone's socks left there. No cleaning / service done during our weekend stay. Pool noises woke us early despite being told they would not early on Sunday.
Review 74:Central location.
Review 75:The weather. Must do better.
Review 76:My wyfe will not go on holiday in the UK unless our two dachshunds go with us. So if we cant find a pet friendly hotel or B&B it's a simple case of : we don't go! We really enjoyed our stay.
Review 77:Absolutely loved the Seven Stars! The room was seperate from the main building but was just what we needed. The pool and sauna were both kept very clean and were just what we needed after a day of walking. Breakfast was superb.
Review 78:While appreciating that the age and character of the building should be maintained, the common areas however are dark and gloomy. Some TLC needed.
Review 79:Attentive owner and staff. Great location, in the middle on Hay. Having a Swimming pool when traveling with a teenager: Priceless!! Great breakfast
Review 80:The hotel has an informal atmosphere that makes one feel at home. Although the room we had was a quite small, it was clean and well appointed. The bath was more than adequate with heated towel racks and enough room to maneuver without bumping elbows or knees. This is unusual because very old buildings such as Seven Stars, which dates back hundreds of years, have serious limitations when designing modern and functional hotel rooms. This is a perfect overnight in Hay especially for those walking Offa's Dyke Path.
Review 81:Breakfast room a bit cold and no music so felt we had to whisper rather than everyone hear conversation.. breakfast was fantastic though!!
Review 82:Comfy bed, clean and cosy room...superb central location near nice pubs, cafes, shops etc and free on site parking. Staff and owner absolutely lovely. Will def stay here again!!!
Review 83:wifi was virtually non-existent on the top floor, would have liked the sauna and pool to remain open till slightly later
Review 84:comfortable rooms, excellent location, good service
Review 85:The room was sited at the top of the building up fairly steep stairs. This is not ideal for older people such as us and perhaps should be advised in the booking choices.
Review 86:Our bed was comfortable, we were warm and the breakfast was excellent.
Review 87:cooked breakfast was very greasy. staff didn't make us feel welcome. room had biscuit crumbs on the floor and was dirty. room was cold on arrival and heating was variable.
Review 88:good choice of fish for breakfast good location in central hay good parking
Review 89:Room was on the small side and duvet could have done with being a bit bigger.
Review 90:The staff at the seven stars were very helpful and friendly. Nice relaxed family friendly atmosphere. Swimming pool very nice. Breakfast was enjoyable.
Review 91:The room was very small and the plumbing very noisy. Every time another guest flushed their toilet, the sounds came through our bathroom pipes very noisily. The walls were very thin as well.
Review 92:The staff are lovely and friendly and the breakfast is first rate. The room was lovely and warm in the cold weather.
Review 93:The shower has no pressure. The taps on the basin were also very awkward, so we had to use a cup to rinse your mouth or fill the basin up to wash your hands.
Review 94:We really enjoyed the indoor swimming pool. Unfortunately we couldn't experience the sauna as our son is 19 months old. The room was great and had lovely views. It was also nice and warm when we experienced the coldest winter. The breakfast was brilliant and the staff could not do enough for you.
Review 95:We had planned to come to Hay on Wye for a Christmas shopping trip In the Summer. And although we only stayed for one night it was very pleasant. Only sorry that we missed the winter festival!
Review 96:would have benefited from a net on window in bathroom as you needed to close the curtain every time you used the toilet
Review 97:Owner very friendly, Full english breakfast was excellant, location very close to centre of town and pubs and restaurants close by. Room was clean and fresh looking. Also provided Gluten free bread as requested
Review 98:Bedding needs to be updated Town clock outside hotel chimes the quarter hour throughout the night. Not the hotel's fault!
Review 99:Central location Staff friendly and helpful Good breakfast
Review 100:Initial bedroom in annex very small; too small to have a chair. Move to room in main building provided more space but bed past its best. Lounge area dark, cold and unwelcoming.
Review 101:Locality in centre of town very good. Superb breakfast set us up for the day.Friendly staff, willing to move us to a better room.
Review 102:The weather happened to be horrible when we stayed.
Review 103:Warn friendly environment with an excellent cooked breakfast and a wide selection of breakfast options. Located in the centre of the Town. There is a swimming pool available which we didn't use but we will use it next time we stay.
Review 104:the room was small could have done with a bit bigger room
Review 105:the best thing about the hotel was its location, parking facility and staff. The breakfast was wonderful
Review 106:Flooded potholes in car park. No outside light on entrance door. Cleaners had missed items in bedroom from previous visitor.
Review 107:Staff friendly. Breakfast generous portions.
Review 108:I had to go home back to work!!
Review 109:Room was lovely had everything we needed. The door straight in too the pool from our room was brilliant!! Nothing like a swim in a nice heated pool before breakfast. Great location right in the heart of hay, staff were fab. Looking forward to the next time we stay there!
Review 110:Lovely old building with lots of chatacter. Staff were very friendly and helpful, food was excellent and as it was right in the centre of town it was very convenient. The swimming pool was a welcome bonus.
Review 111:Beams in the bedroom were low and uneven floors with a little step into bathroom a bit tricky. Had to get cash as credit card machine was not working???? Not sure if that was just when we were there or more "suitable" for the owner.
Review 112:The location of the hotel was right in the middle if town which was good.parking was off road and good. Breakfast was great. Enjoyed the stay
Review 113:The staff at the hotel were excellent! The food is splendid and I felt incredibly welcomed in the town. The room itself was gorgeous and very clean. Would love to stay again!
Review 114:The bed was a little short along with the quilt, but i am 6' 5''. I would just have been a littler more comfortable to have my feet covered.
Review 115:Staff, location and breakfeast were all excellent
Review 116:Staff could not have been more helpful and friendly. We have been coming here for years and it just gets better. If you want a place to stay in Hay this is it and it's got it's own pool!
Review 117:Reception area decoration a bit jaded and could do with updating but bedroom fine
Review 118:Extremely friendly and helpful manager Enjoyed sauna & swim after wet walking in Brecon Beacons Very good scrambled eggs & smoked salmon for breakfast
Review 119:Facilities were a bit basic but great value foroney
Review 120:Delightful stay with very attentive and friendly staff the swimming pool was a bit cold but to be fair it was October would definately stay again or recommend for a short break
Review 121:The spongy bed, lying at a bit of an angle due to sloping floors. Didn't like the front room as its noisy and there was no heating.
Review 122:the pool and sauna were excellent as was the breakfast, though they need to put porridge on the menu.
Review 123:Room 3 is far too small to be a double. There was a wardrobe on one side of the bed and an unnecessary divider on the other, so no space for bedside tables, nowhere to put the (unstable weirdly shaped) mugs. There was a loose double socket and cable hanging down from the ceiling. The landlady, though friendly enough, was in a permanent rush.
Review 124:Good breakfast although a very small piece of smoked salmon. Secure bike storage. Very good swimming pool.
Review 125:We were over the swimmingpool, not a problem in itself, but the wall shared with the adjoining room is not soundproofed and the idiot occupant put the television on very loud at 6am, long before the sun had cleared Begwyn's Bluff.
Review 126:Well placed central position. Very cheerful, positive hostess. Excellent breakfast menu; well presented food.
Review 127:The drain outlet in the shower was blocked with hair .
Review 128:Liked the location in the centre very convenient for shops and restaurants . Lovely friendly proprietress hope she managed to negotiate the going rate for the tooth fairy ! Excellent choice for a lovely breakfast .Comfy bed slept well .
Review 129:The landlady is very nice and knows everyone in hay. The place even has a pool and sauna - great for relaxing after a long walk over the hills on offa's dyke path.
Review 130:Could do with a "freshening up" generally. Have been visiting over a period of 10 years and will continue to do so, but definitely in need of a refurb.
Review 131:Superb breakfast Use of pool Ideal location Friendly staff
Review 132:Spent one night in the main house, heard some noise and creaky floors from above so preferred the outside room but I have known worse!
Review 133:Friendly and efficient owner. Cleanliness, good quality linen, etc. Excellent breakfast. Central parking. Quiet outside room once swimming pool shuts, very quiet overnight.
The Fine Print
Please note: children using the swimming pool must be supervised by adults at all times.
