The Crown Inn

The Crown Inn descritpion
With parts dating back to the 13th century, this 16th-century inn is now a small country pub offering free Wi-Fi, 2 bars, a separate restaurant and comfortable accommodations.
In the heart of the small, charming village of Gayton, the Crown Inn offers 4 comfortable and homey rooms, furnished in a traditional cottage style. Every room has tea/coffee making facilities and a Freeview cable TV.
Rich in original character and traditional charm, parts of the building are said to date back to between 1216 and 1262, when the building was constructed to house the stonemason and the workers who built the church across from the hotel. There are low original wooden beams in a few places.
The Crown Inn is dog friendly and well-behaved dogs are welcome in the rooms and throughout the pub, except for in the restaurant.

Reviews for The Crown Inn
Review 1:I left the property early the next morning had to leave back door unlocked as I was not instructed to do otherwise.
Review 2:They provided me with a breakfast tray due to my early start to the following day!
Review 3:Staff were lovely, room was basic but clean and bathroom was immaculate. We had a delicious meal in the evening and everyone was kind to our big dog. Thank you.
Review 4:I was on call at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital and I choose this hotel because of it proximity to the Hospital. There is no mobile network inside the hotel and also no coverage for my bleep! I was quite concern about any urgent calls from the hospital, because there was no telephone landline as well. Apparently the insulation of the walls is not great - I was hearing the snoring of the gentleman next door. But nothing to worry - he was under monitored anaesthetic care. I case something happened and he stopped breathing, I was ready to help.
Review 5:The staff was friendly and helpful. The hotel was clean and it has an unique atmosphere.
Review 6:The room was a little tired looking but comfortable
Review 7:Nice country pub with a warm and welcoming atmosphere. Staff were really friendly, chatty and helpful. It was just right for what we needed I'd stay here again. Also had a really good nights sleep
Review 8:I had asthma and no wonder when looking at other reviews I see dogs areallowed in rooms!!! We had an incident with some bleach which wasn'twiped up properly and the room where we had breakfast was like adungeon!! Can honestly say it was the worst place we have stayed and weshall definitely not be returning.
Review 9:Thw free wifi didn't work at all. The room was small and made smaller by the family room having a camp bed in which blocked the wardrobes and drawers. I booked to go with two small children, and on many occasions they were told to be quiet by staff and I was made to feel that we were a nuisance because of them talking, and getting up early. Couldn't get the pram upstairs due to the stairs being narrow so left of downstairs which was okay but not what I expected. The squash was £1.30 per drink and this was just Caudial found this price shocking. Not really a young family venue however perfect for couples looking for a relaxing weekend :)
Review 10:Location was beautiful, local shop doesn't open long tho. Breakfast was lovely
Review 11:People& staffs were pleasant.Satisfied with breakfast but better if baked beans served, too. Never got through with the Wi-fi ( to both given wifi) .
Review 12:Noisy bedroom over bar and on busy road. Having the staff too busy cleaning the place in the morning , that everything was quickly placed on the table so they could go back to their duties but forgetting their guests...! We had to ask for more coffee, then more toast, then when we asked where the cereals were ? She said ' oh, did you want cereals ?.... The usual pub grub in the evening is fairly priced but unspectacular , and they push their luck for the prices of the slightly more sophisticated dishes.
Review 13:Spacious room, very clean, beautiful beer garden. Traditional old pub, full of character , good beers .
Review 14:The hotel is worn down and I suspect a bit mould there due to moist environment.
Review 15:Very nice staff, helpful and kind. Nice home-cooked breakfast. Would stay there again du to this.
Review 16:The room and bathroom were clean and tidy although we did find some cobwebs in the room and the bathroom could do with some refurbishment but good value for money
Review 17:It was an ideal location for our requirements and was reasonable priced with no charge for the dog
Review 18:The road outside was noisy at times during the night and one morning guests leaving very early were also very noisy. This is just an observation as we appreciate there is nothing The Crown can do about that!
Review 19:The staff were excellent - very friendly. Our room was clean and comfortable. The food was well cooked and presented and very generous portions. We were there with our two dogs and they were also made very welcome. We would definitely come back again.
Review 20:Nothing to not like!
Review 21:We had a cycling event and the staff were so helpful offering to store our bikes overnight, and arranging for cooked breakfast at 7.30am on a Sunday. Faultless! The resturant food was also very good
Review 22:The sanitation in my en suite was a saniflo so there were intermittent loud gurglings and grinding noises. There was also a mild but noticeable smell of sewer, which was combated by the large size air freshener provided. Access to rooms could be awkward for anyone with impaired mobility.
Review 23:The Crown is an old, traditional roadside inn. It offers a daily two size carvery meal and appears to be dog friendly
Review 24:The rooms are a bit tired and unloved. No attention paid to experience of staying there. i.e. breakfast service basic and without frills. Nothing wrong with the actual food though.
Review 25:It's quite a nice pub downstairs
Review 26:Mobile phone cover was "patchy" and a desk or table in the room would have made it easier working in the room.
Review 27:Clean,comfortable room, pleasant helpful staff
Review 28:The room smelt terrible of cigar smoke and wet dog put down to recent guest.. Dogs left to howl in next door room early on Sunday morning which woke everyone up no attempt to shut them up
Review 29:the staff are fabulous the food was good
Review 30:The food is far too overpriced and I had to send my lunch and dinner back as was not done properly. Miserable landlady spoke to her on more that 1 occasion and was totally ignored. dreadful lack of customer service.
Review 31:The pub itself is a lovely place and the beer is excellent.
Review 32:arrived to a friendly welcolme from landlady, taken to our room, shown the shared bathroom, booked table for evening meal, all fine, the food here is very good indeed, our evening meal was delicious, good local sourced meat on menu, nice choice, breakfast again all cooked fresh, couldn't fault the food or pub comfort at all, bed a tad hard, but that's because we have topper on ours at home, cosy bedrooms, tv, hairdryer supplied, fresh towels, shared bathroom adequate, shower and bath, plenty hot water.
Review 33:The room we had was wonderful, clean, comfortable and plenty of room for our 2 dogs. The staff were very helpful and the food was great. We would recommend The Crown to anyone.
Review 34:Sadly door of bedroom kept banging when downstairs door opened/shut so woke me early in the morning as did the surprising amount of traffic.
Review 35:Great pub atmosphere, staff friendly and helpful. Room great size and comfortable. Good beer and menu
Review 36:At the end of the day, this is a pub with rooms above it. When you were in the room, you could hear people in the pub talking - it wasn't a problem for us but might be for others.
Review 37:We were greeted by Sophie, who was very welcoming and clear about check-in etc. The room was comfortable, the shared bathroom was clean and right across from our room which was convenient.
Review 38:my room was cold and even putting on the electric radiator didn't help. Bed was very hard and pillows were as flat as pancakes.
Review 39:good wi fi in the bar and parking was good, the food was ok but nothing brilliant.
Review 40:Nothing.
Review 41:Character of period pub, friendly locals, excellent food. I left my mobile phone in the room and the lovely lady ran outo the carpark with it as we were leaving. Old fashioned honest hospitality. Thank you!
Review 42:Since the mobile phone signal is almost zero I was depending on WIFI. However no internet access for many hours even though the WIFI signal and the connection was good. Just did not connect to the Internet. So I was cut off completely.
Review 43:Delicious food, friendly staff, lovely ambience
Review 44:Wifi a bit rubbish.
Review 45:Staff were both friendly and welcoming in this charming pub just outside Kings Lynn. Excellent breakfast, real fire, a pub full of character. Would use again without a doubt.
Review 46:Lack of information - only given key & shown to room, nothing else. Having to walk through busy bar to get to room, being stared at by locals. Food generally disappointing for the price - roast & chip potatoes inedible. Restaurant closed too early.
Review 47:Lady who cooked breakfast. Breakfast. Period features & character Seafood starter was lovely
Review 48:Myself and my partner loved our stay from start to finish. We loved the building the atmosphere was very friendly. All the staff and landlady were lovely. Our dogs were made very welcome. Food was delicious. Cannot fault anything at all. We will definitely return.
Review 49:Poor wifi and phone signal
Review 50:This place has alot of character, the room was small but cosy. Very comfortable and clean. I had a shared bathroom but this was not a problem. The breakfast was lovely as I love a English breakfast. The only thing I would say needs looking into is that you have free wifi but it was not very strong in connection. Over all I liked my stay.
Review 51:There is nothing "not to like" about the Crown IMHO.
Review 52:We stay here when we visit our friends in the area. It's not "luxury" but it's good, honest, clean, warm, well priced, good food, good bar. Just what you need. Value for money. I'm only worried that my rating will put their prices up! Noooooooo!
Review 53:The beds were very hard, The lighting was terrible so we couldn't see much of our room in the morning and it was difficult to blow dry your hair and put your make up on. Better lighting and slighter better beds would have made it very, very good.
Review 54:The staff were lovely, Very friendly, very accommodating.Very clean but the door needed something to make it squeak less. The bathroom door drove us nuts with the noise it made. All in all I would give it 7 out of 10.
Review 55:The staff and the ambiance of the crown was amazing very friendly and extremely helpful the room was comfy and clean very good all round food also excellent
Review 56:Mobile Phone reception is apalling which isn't their fault but makes calls difficult especially if needing to do this for buisness. I think they should offer a landline service in the rooms.
Review 57:Just what I needed for buisness.
Review 58:Bathing facilities not exactly 5 star hotel level, but if that is what you want, you don't belong here. It is clean, comfortable, and individual.
Review 59:Warm, helpful, supportive staff. I arrived late, tired, cold and lost, and they held open the kitchen for me, and helped me contact the people I had missed my appointment with.
Review 60:Light on front of pub kept our room lit until the pub closed. Blackout blinds / curtains would have been good.
Review 61:Pet friendly Cleanliness Good food at a reasonable price Friendly staff Excellent breakfast
Review 62:Lovely weekend break away spent at the crown inn. Easy to find and great location. Close to Hunstanton and Kings Lynn where there were plenty of things to see and do. Food was lovely and staff were also friendly and helpful. They even allowed us to open up a tab which we paid at the end of our stay. Traditional furnishing and a real comfy bed. Cask ales a real treat! Would definitely stay at the inn again and would recommend it to others. Sharing a bathroom with others did not cause us any problems. Great nite sleep had by all.
Review 63:Location,was so pretty friendly staff, excellent food, reasonably priced drinks, and even the sun shone for me,thoroughly enjoyed myself even stayed an extra night.
Review 64:to say what i did not like about the crown inn would take me all day as it would take me that long to think of something.
Review 65:a typically country location and hostilary, giving a ideal place to explore that part of norfolk. After spending the day touring around, it was nice to return to a quiet pint with the locals before getting ready for the homely cooked evening meal and then retireing to the comfort of your room
Review 66:Had to pay full price for double room as single room not available but understand the policy.
Review 67:Olde style country inn great food easy parking good real ale friendly locals ideal for regular business trips to Kings Lynn
Review 68:Bit noisy until pub closed and doors very low so tall husband had to duck a lot!!
Review 69:Quirky rooms with everything you need. Nice pub and very easy feel going down to eat and drink there and bed is a few steps away. Good breakfast, I agree with previous comments, some baked beans needed as a sauce!
