Reviews for The Old Quay House Hotel
Review 1:Parking was bit of a hike, but minor negative of an otherwise fantastic stay. Shower in room 11 not draining properly - needs fixing.
Review 2:Very comfortable hotel, the staff go out of their way to look after you, great food and a boutique atmosphere, very cosy and in centre of town. On Christmas Day the hotel put on a free leftovers buffet for guests that you could take back to your room to pick on - perfect end to a relaxing Christmas Day!
Review 3:Lack of lounge area Distance to car park Service at dinner slightly functional. Wine not opened at the table. Opinions not requested
Review 4:Location Huge comfortable bed Lovely ensuite Pleasant decor
Review 5:Lack of parking - you have to walk 10 mins to a car park although they do provide a free permit.
Review 6:Well designed rooms, great position and good food. The bed was super comfortable and the breakfasts and dinners were generous, fresh and delicious. There are nice touches in the rooms like an umbrella for those Cornish rain storms and two raincoats. Our view, although a little restricted was an always changing theatre of river life and very beautiful.
Review 7:very nice location ,a great terrace where food could be served, tea and leisurely views of the river activity enjoyed. rooms were a good size and the bathrooms superior
Review 8:Could cater for vegetarians more eg. Veggie sausages. Classic double room a bit pricey for the size of the room.
Review 9:Amazing staff! Great location. Fantastic breakfast.
Review 10:A little expensive for what it is. Probably paying a good size premium for the location. Food could have been better considering the reputation. My wife's meal was a little too fried and soggy.
Review 11:Excellent location. Very comfortable bed Good decorative order
Review 12:The restaurant has no atmosphere. Too staid and boring. We went to Sams next door on our second night and had a ball. Restaurant too pretentious and seating needs to be rearranged for couples to be able to look out. Buy the bank next door and with development you will be the premium spot in Fowey for the next 50 years.
Review 13:The bed was extremely comfortable and the view great
Review 14:Ate at the hotel restaurant on our second night. Our personal view was that the portions were very small and do overpriced.
Review 15:The room, the location and the staff make this a delightful place to stay and somewhere we would gladly revisit.
Review 16:Having had a hip replacement 9 weeks ago, I explained on arrival that I needed a walk in shower. We were given room 9. I had to leave my elbow crutch in the reception area and crawl on hands and knees up 2 flights of stairs to room 9!! This was comfortable but only about 9 feet square. There were no chairs to sit on and WORSE the en-suite was about 9 steps down from the room. This meant I was really nervous about going to the loo in the night. By morning I decided I could not stay another night. The manager charged us for 3 nights ---over £600 and although the weather was not to be helped, I never want to return to Fowey. The breakfast was fine, but the taxi to the car park (in pouring rain) cost another £10. I was so pleased to head back to Surrey. Certainly not value for money.
Review 17:The only negative was that there is no lift.
Review 18:The service was very helpful. I'm writing this on behalf of my elderly parents and nothing was too much trouble.
Review 19:Car parking, as expected, is not very convenient but it worked. The dinner in the restaurant was a little overworked. The starter portion was very small and, for what it was, expensive.
Review 20:Friendly, helpful staff. Excellent location in the centre of Fowey and on the river.
Review 21:£225 for a room little more than 10 sq m with no real view is an outrageous price. We previously stayed in their more expensive rooms which were actually better value for money.
Review 22:fantastic location, stylish design, and excellent friendly staff.
Review 23:Terrace very popular with non-residents too (and understandably so) but this meant a large table of demanding adults plus children and it was hard to get served. More staff at busy periods? Bit of a trek to the (free) car park, but that's Fowey.
Review 24:Breakfast on the terrace. Location perfect. Nice touches such as waterproof jackets in the wardrobe and ear plugs so it was possible to sleep with the (street facing) window open. Food excellent, staff friendly but pressed at busy times.
Review 25:The noise made by seagulls ALL night. No sound proofing. The lack of information regarding restrictions on road use from leaving the ferry, very narrow access which larger vehicles might find challenging. Less mobile guests would find difficult.
Review 26:Tasteful decor, helpful pleasant staff, restaurant food.
Review 27:We booked a classic bedroom which is fine and clean but what they did not mention is that the bedroom will be so noisy, there is no double glazing and no air-con in any of the bedrooms, which is quite poor for a 5 star hotel
Review 28:Nothing bad at all!
Review 29:The most comfortable beds in a hotel I have ever stayed in. And the staff were great. Breakfast was a treat and dinner in the restaurant equally good.
Review 30:Fowey is quaint but has narrow streets where strolling tourists and cars have an uneasy existence!
Review 31:Positioned nicely in Fowey. Well equipped. Nicely decorated. Great restaurant and superb service. Great bedroom and bathroom. Parking permit supplied by hotel. Terrace to restaurant with Dolphins swimming nearby!
Review 32:Restaurant staff leave a lot to be desired and need training. Hard to communicate as English was not first language. Chef clearly knows how to cook as dibber was very good but hot breakfast dishes very poor.
Review 33:Great location, staff greeting excellent, facilities and overall appearance excellent
Review 34:Parking faraway when you have to drag your luggage.
Review 35:Perfect location along the riverside. Breakfirst in the morning light on the river erases is a delight.
Review 36:We were in room 9, which was very small and had no chairs to sit on, we mentioned this, and we were moved to room 5, twice the size, and was the room in the picture of the conformation, so apart from room 9 it was all good
Review 37:Location, easy to get around, clearly the best hotel in fiery, over looking the water was great. It's a really nice hotel
Review 38:Our South-facing room grew warm and stuffy during the afternoons, though we remedied this by opening the window and balcony door when returning. We found the Wi-Fi service to be slow and rather limited during our stay.
Review 39:We loved the location, the food, the quality of the fittings and overall décor, and the friendliness and helpfulness of every member of staff we encountered.
Review 40:not a bad criticism really- stop the extractor fan in bathroom from being so noisy! Add a greater variety of fruit to breakfast (e.g. oranges) make bedroom keys easier to extract.
Review 41:comfort, great food, easy location all staff went out of their way to be helpful.
Review 42:Street facing rooms are quite noisy and our classic double room was on the small side (although this didn't bother us). If you can nab a deluxe with a balcony I think that'd be well worth it!
Review 43:The hotel is super comfortable with all the little touches you could want - umbrellas, dressing gowns, rain macs, chocolate bars on check out. Best bed I've slept in for a long time!
Review 44:Warm friendly staff that go the extra mile to make your stay comfortable and enjoyable. The food a the Q restaurant was delicious and the fresh ingredients are noticeable.
Review 45:My wife asked for some information to be sent after we left, still waiting. If you say your going to do something, do it. Not good if you are looking for repeat business.
Review 46:Location, style
Review 47:The car park can feel like a long way off.
Review 48:The location could not be much better, the terrace on the river, the views, the staff, the peaceful atmosphere, the bed, the pillows, the food.
Review 49:We stayed in room 3 which was over the kitchen area. When the extractor fan was on we were disturbed by the noise
Review 50:Hotel was very clean, breakfast was great and the staff were helpful and pleasant
Review 51:It was quite a long walk to the car park which didn't worry us but might not be good if walking is an issue or the weather is very bad. Room was on the small side, particularly as it was a "superior" double. for this reason I do feel that the rates are a little high
Review 52:Location - right in the middle of everything Staff - really welcoming and helpful Room - very comfortable
Review 53:I have a respiratory problem and the hotels car park is up a very steep hill . Any one staying need s to know , it may be an issue.
Review 54:Everything was great .
Review 55:Bed was large and potentially very comfortable. Unfortunately each side had a very significant dip in the matresses (two beds adjoined) which tended to tip you off toward the edges of the bed.
Review 56:Beautiful boutique hotel. Super food. friendly staff. Very well maintained. Our room had restricted sea/harbour views. Generally lovely facilities.
Review 57:Very long walk to and from car park especially on a wet November evening! There is a bus during the day . The food was disappointing as it was one of the reasons we had selected this hotel and it did not meet expectations. Interesting
Review 58:Beautifully styled room and ensuite. View from balcony. Nice touches in waterproof jackets and brollies.
Review 59:Room facing the street very noisy with people going by late at night and then deliveries first thing. Could also hear quite loudly the person/people above moving about . Very disturbed night
Review 60:Very welcoming and attentive staff
Review 61:The bed in the penthouse suite is set into the eaves and is only about 12 ins high, very comfortable but unsuitable for anyone who has difficulties getting up from floor level. Bedroom did not have a chair which would have been useful.
Review 62:The terrace which juts out into the harbour is an idyllic place to eat. We were lucky enough to be able eat breakfast outside every morning. The views across the harbour from the terrace or our penthouse suite sitting room are magnificent. The evening menu is very high quality indeed.
Review 63:Lack of on-the-spot parking, especially as wife was disabled and on a Blue Badge.
Review 64:Just about everything from food, service and location. The whole experience felt so relaxing
Review 65:The room was cramped and small with only a side river view from the tiny triangular balcony. For a superior room this was vastly overpriced.
Review 66:The location in the centre of town and right on the river.
Review 67:NOT ENOUGH CHANGES TO MENU POOR TV RECEPTION ONLY ONE CHAIR IN BEDROOM
Review 68:THE STAFF THE QUALITY OF THE FOOD THE RELAXED ATMOSPHERE THE LOVELY POSITION ON THE WATER FRONT THE CLEANLINESS
Review 69:We booked a superior double room.It turned out to be very small with no comfortable chairs to sit on. Also the curtain was torn. Very little storage. Also the seating in the bar/lounge were most uncomfortable. Also presentation of food could be better.
Review 70:Central location by the water front.
Review 71:The staff were very helpful and friendly. The breakfast was of a high standard and there was a good choice of cooked food on the menu. The view from my room was overlooking the harbour and the little balcony meant I could be outside to see the view. A great hotel all round.
Review 72:The free parking provided was quite a trek from the hotel!
Review 73:The staff could not have been more friendly. Nothing was too much trouble. The food was superb and the views over the river from the terrace were fantastic. We could literally dip our toast into the water at breakfast!
Review 74:We only stayed there for two nights which was not long enough.
Review 75:Very convenient location with exerlant views and friendly staff. Would definitely stay there again.
Review 76:Nothing
Review 77:Layout of room. Finishing touches of high quality. Very helpful staff. Perfectly located in the town. Restaurant excellent with water views Everything you need even a ceiling fan for those hot summer nights which do occur.
Review 78:We had a last minute stay in room 1 overlooking the road during regatta week and the revelling went on through the night - would only suggest a week to avoid if you are on a budget.
Review 79:Our second visit to the Old Quay House. Quaint little hotel on the quayside at Fowey. Quirky in that you drop your bags and with your voucher park on the edge of town. The best rooms are those overlooking the water of course. But all are great relative to cost. The staff could not be more accommodating
Review 80:The service at breakfast and dinner was incredibly slow. The room was really hot and the bathroom like a sauna The distance of the car park from the hotel The size of the room considering the price charged
Review 81:The terrace overlooking the river The decor Friendly staff
Review 82:We needed to move rooms for the final night of our stay as someone had booked into our room. It is unclear of the reasons why as stories from staff conflicted. We agreed to move from room 2 to room 1 but unfortunately this was changed to room 3. This room was small and uncomfortable with a view that overlooked a grey slate roof and a building site. The temperature in the room was unbearable even with the window open and a ceiling fan on all night. A jug of milk taken from the fridge at 11 the previous evening curdled overnight! The manager took £50 of our bill. We still had to pay £140 for a very uncomfortable night. This was a great shame as until the final night our stay had been wonderful.
Review 83:Staff in reception, restaurant and bar were wonderful. Pleasant, friendly and could not do enough for you. Hotel was clean. Our first room was bright and spacious and well equipped. Pleasing extras such as raincoats and umbrellas. Fresh milk in fridge in hallway and morning papers delivered to room.Sitting on terrace for breakfast was fabulous.
Review 84:Noise from the seagulls!!!! Not the hotel's fault, but we had to have the windows open as it was so hot, and the birds were nesting close by so they made the most dreadful noise all night!!!!!
Review 85:Very helpful staff, lovely room with lots of thoughtful extra touches, like the fridge on the landing containing jugs of fresh milk, and the dvds and books available to use. Lovely food, fab views. Couldn't fault it.
Review 86:It is a lovely hotel in a great location in fowey. But I do think that the room rates were quite high - not sure we would have paid that much unless it was a special occasion. We also had dinner which although was a nice meal - the desert was especially good the main was nice but not outstanding. Maybe we are just not foodies. Parking a bit of a faff- the car park was a hike from the hotel even without bags. Guess that is the price you pay for being in the centre of town.
Review 87:Location, the terrace overlooking the river. The room was lovely and did indeed have a view. Bathroom well appointed and bed comfortable. Staff were very attentive apart from busy times on the terrace.
Review 88:The car park is a bit away from the hotel but the system works.
Review 89:Everything! The room was great with the best views possible; the attention to detail was excellent and the food superb. Also the staff were totally efficient in getting the luggage in and giving directions to the car park.
Review 90:Going home!
Review 91:Friendly and efficient staff, made us feel very welcome on arrival and throughout our stay. A lot of thought had been given to ensuring their guests had everything they needed and any request immediately resolved.
Review 92:Inevitably - the screaming Seabirds more than disturbed a good night sleep
Review 93:The location was abslutely stunning. Enjoy our excellent breakfast literally by the sea - was quite an experience.
Review 94:We had a fabulous time last week, couldn't have been better. The hotel is stunning and the staff cannot do enough. Keep up the good work, we will be back soon.
Review 95:My partner and I left The Old Quay House 3 nights prematurely, due to a shocking experience at what was in fact, a glorified B&B. We had to change rooms as the original had a view over scaffolding, was SO small, not exactly big enough to unpack for 4 nights and certainly didn't reflect the luxurious image of the rooms on the website! We tried for an hour to get the TV to work, 2 staff were unable to assist,(this was at 10.30pm at night whilst I was trying to sleep) There was little or no sound insulation, doors banging, and certainly other guests conversations could be overheard. One room mug was heavily stained so no morning coffee for me, appalling service in the bar and at breakfast. In fact it resembled YTS. Stuffy room, no aircon, couldn't sleep because the local band was performing so loudly, couldn't close the door due to lack or aircon on a hot night, the plastic key snapped off in the door and the replacement master key didn't work, so our room was left unlocked whilst we went out for supper The time the TV did work (one channel only) the signal disappeared and pixelated by the seagulls sitting on the aerial. When we decided we had to leave the following morning, the manager promised us a full refund including the days we hadn't used. She was terribly apologetic and assured us the other manager would call us later to discuss. I STILL await his call. Perhaps he's too embarrassed or discourteous to speak with us. My partner and I have never checked out of a hotel early and certainly never felt so robbed and cheated - £900 for 4 nights, yes that's £225 per night. Please do NOT stay this highly overrated place. At £140 per night max, I could have accepted all of the above.
Review 96:the bed too soft. Asked for a firm bed, got a very soft one , consequently had to sleep on the floor most of the two nights I was there. Expensive hotel, did not feel value for money.
Review 97:Nice staff, helpful. good outside location
Review 98:A little noisy between rooms
Review 99:Very friendly staff. Made to feel very comfortable.
Review 100:Excellant food, service was first class, would definitely return
Review 101:You're in the centre of Fowey, so you're never far away from the heart and soul of this beautiful Cornish village.
Review 102:Everything was great. Room, staff and food were great, will come again
Review 103:Smallness of rooms. Noise at night, other guests. Broken room blinds
Review 104:Great staff. Great Chef
Review 105:Beautiful location good food
Review 106:Wonderful location, beautiful room with comfortable bed & lovely linens
Review 107:very over priced, rooms small. Difficult to get to and parking a very long way away
Review 108:Great staff, beautiful views, excellent food.
Review 109:Consistency.
Review 110:Excellent rooms. Try for a river view if possible.
Review 111:I thought it was overpriced.
Review 112:Breakfasts were poor!one of the driest, skimpiest omelette which I have ever seen. Bathroom-tres moderne but very impractical
Review 113:Waiters' lack of efficiency in the restaurant. Cook needs more experience. Expensive.
Review 114:Location, cleanliness.
Review 115:.
Review 116:Just perfect!
Review 117:Great hotel, breakfast was hi and miss, internet was not a brilliant reception. Everything else was perfect
Review 118:Wonderful location and very thoughtful touches to make the stay really comfortable.
Review 119:Parking
Review 120:Location
Review 121:Parking the car so far away and the daily walk to get it !
Review 122:View from room 12 over the river. Wonderful!
Review 123:location was perfect. The staff were very attentive and friendly. Really enjoyed our stay.
Review 124:Great location, great rooms, great food!
Review 125:Seagull noise!
Review 126:Staff are efficient but not overbearing
Review 127:I like the location and modern decor. The building was beautifully restored and our room had a view that opened onto a quaint balcony.
Review 128:Terrace food staff location
Review 129:Very noisy Seagulls early in the morning. Windows and glass doors need double glazing! Parking was a bit of a nightmare but unavoidable
Review 130:The location.
The Fine Print
Please note that the hotel does not have a car park, however you can be given parking permits for the Old Station Yard car park which is 2,400 feet away. It is important that on arrival in Fowey you drive to the hotel to get your permit.
