Reviews for The Cormorant Hotel

Review 1:Mattress was very poor needed replacing but the room was pleasant .

Review 2:The location and staff were excellent very friendly and helpful with beautiful surroundings..

Review 3:Although the rooms were a little dated, they were immaculate and very comfortable. The views were breathtaking.

Review 4:The food was amazing. The staff went out of their way to make our stay really special.

Review 5:The first nights menu no seafood as advertised on dinner menu, and the steak of my partners no taste and pretty poor but still charged for it!! Even though we explained the complaint, I had the same apparently next cut of meat mine was fine!!

Review 6:The atmosphere relaxation and views

Review 7:The decor in the room was a bit tired and dated. The owner/manager reprimanded 2 members of staff in front of guests...not big and not clever madam!

Review 8:Fantastic river views, lovely staff and excellent food.

Review 9:The bed had a foot rest which made it too short for me - I am 6' 4" tall, this is why the comfort score is so low. Skirting boards were very dusty. Walls were so thin you could hear everything going on in the next room.

Review 10:Food was excellent. Location outstanding. Lounge was superb for drinking gin and tonics.

Review 11:Location was definitely out of the way and difficult to access and roads in and out of the village extremely difficult especially at night. The proprietor was argumentative and not friendly especially if you experience difficulty with accommodation or request extras. Food was only satisfactory not worth the prices charged. Pool and facilities were worn and dated and you access from outside parking lot.

Review 12:Russell the concierge was amazing Very helpful pleasant and prompt with service requests. Definitely an asset to the hotel.

Review 13:The room was noisy you could hear upstairs clearly, particuarly when they were using the toilet! Our toilet seat was also loose. In general it needed updating as it had the feel of an old peoples home!

Review 14:Location was lovely and the staff very friendly and helpful. The homemade biscuits were very nice!

Review 15:Robes in room, would of been nice. Also hair conditioner. Lovely pool and hot tub, alittle too friendly for changing!

Review 16:Staff very friendly, great location, great choice of menu for breakfast.

Review 17:The food was expensive for the portions you got, and the very steep slope leading up to the hotel was nearly impossible for myself and wife (who wore high heels) to negotiate walking down it when it was raining, hand rail didn't help as made of wood and wet and slippy too, also when the sun goes down there is no lights outside which makes walking anywhere virtually impossible. Steps and lights needed outside.

Review 18:The room and friendliness of the staff were very good.

Review 19:Breakfast waiter at weekend was surly, not at all friendly. He didn't even acknowledge us, just served our breakfast, no toast offered. Good job next day was different staff or we would not have stayed. Bad start to a day. Restaurant meals too precousious and expensive, had to go out to eat which was such a shame. Other guests said the same. Should offer an alternative menu too.

Review 20:Facilities excellent. beautiful area.

Review 21:Bedrooms in need of updating, I definitely think the artificial flowers and the old fashioned paintings need to go!

Review 22:The location is superb if you enjoy peace and quiet. Wonderful views, friendly and helpful staff, brilliant breakfasts. A lovely lounge and bar area.

Review 23:Room allocated was not as per the booking but this was sorted. Everyone else staying seemed to be on a far better deal than ours.

Review 24:Excellent food and good location with superb views of the estuary

Review 25:Views from all rooms are magnificent and it is so quiet and relaxing. All meals were delicious and plentiful. The hot tub was a joy after our walk along the Saints Trail to Fowey and back.

Review 26:Would have liked a full balcony instead of a juliette balcony, so it would be better if it were clear at point of booking. This was a birthday present so wanted it to be special.

Review 27:Beautiful views across the river from the room. Enjoyed the hot tub.

Review 28:The noise level from the room above was not really acceptable as we could hear every footfall and every movement not the fault of the occupants the flooring desperately needs sorting out.

Review 29:The days that were spent at the hotel were very good, a very pleasant vista, clean room, clean hotel, very pleasant staff and exceptional food

Review 30:Very little signage to the hotel which was very difficult to find. There are a lot of steps both inside and outside the hotel. The soundproofing between the bedrooms was very poor. The shower had an unnecessarily complicated operating system with no instructions. The decor and furnishings were old and tired. The food was lacking taste and seasoning.

Review 31:Excellent views over the river. Peaceful location.

Review 32:Very steep walk up to hotel. Train passes in front of hotel with warning signal around 6am. Hotel not in Fowey itself. Walkable in daylight but about 2 miles away.

Review 33:Spectacular views.

Review 34:Access could be an issue for some, the bathroom was very compact and some of the bedroom furniture could do with a facelift.

Review 35:Awesome views over the river and its surroundings! Lovely comfortable bed and a very good restaurant.

Review 36:(1) If you don't have a car then the steep approach road (ramp) from the quayside to the hotel would defeat anyone with a mobility disability trying to walk up. (2) Access road floods at very high tides but hotel staff warn you when this will happen. Other than that - a brilliant and peaceful place.

Review 37:This hotel has a lovely location on the high bank of the River Fowey, with great views and much wildlife - especially herons, egret, swans and cormorants - with a pair of ospreys seen. The staff are outstandingly helpful. The food is 'Chefy' but I found it delicious and sufficient. Our room had a very comfortable bed, bath and shower, balcony with chairs and table and there was a desk to sit and write at, which was our main purpose - a very peaceful and lovely place. If tide is high enough then local Fowey harbour cruises can drop you off back at the hotel quayside. Best things overall - staff's helpful attitude and great views.

Review 38:Imitation candle on the dinner table - don't bother if you are not going to have the real thing!!

Review 39:Everything - great views, very attentive staff, excellent food, lovely rooms. Can't fault it, reminded me of old fashioned service, updated!!

Review 40:The formality of the restaurant, the ripped headboard and kettle that was used on he floor. The fact that you had to pay extra for decent bread and porridge it was unreasonable .

Review 41:The location was excellent especially in good weather. The pool and spa bath were lovely. The staff were helpful. The food was of a good standard. The view from the room was stunning .

Review 42:There was a bit of an old smell in the corridors but wouldn't put me off booking again

Review 43:The view from the room was amazing, hot tub and pool were lovely and very relaxing

Review 44:Poor housekeeping - tea/coffee etc not replenished daily; used glasses not washed. No help with luggage No newsapers

Review 45:Superb food but not all options available for breakfast.

Review 46:Extremely steep drive way was a shock Hotel was very tired, balcony not very private, pool and spa disappointing - not clean and in a separate building. In same week stayed in 3 bed and breakfast accommodations that were half the price and better accommodation. Food was good but spoiled by tiny portions, high prices and lots of supplementary charges.

Review 47:Lovely view

Review 48:A chair in our room was a bit scruffy.

Review 49:We loved the view of the river from our room. It was very quiet with no passing traffic. The staff were very friendly and the meals very enjoyable. Enjoyed the pool. oved the location overlooking the river

Review 50:The road to the hotel/village is mainly a single track with no passing points, not for the faint hearted or wide cars. There are also no local amenity's apart from one pub. Although the hotels wine list contained a good selection, they came at a price and not a cheap one. The TV in the room was the size of a small laptop, binoculars/opera glasses would have helped to view it.

Review 51:All of the staff we met were very friendly and helpfull. The breakfast had a good selection of items on offer, we only had one evening meal and although it was cooked to perfection, I was led to believe the limited menu doesn't change that often. The uninterupted view from the room across the Fowey estuary was fantastic. If you want peace and quite then this is the place to be.

Review 52:cracking location, car parking space (this is Golant we are talking about). Not being able to get to the hotel at high tide by the village road was a bonus - and the day was saved by the old chap who told me of a back lane that missed the flooding.

Review 53:The only thing i can give slight fault is parking a little tight but that is minor.

Review 54:The view was amazing, The food was delicious and the room was perfect... The hot tub was great as was the pool. The staff was most professional and friendly.

Review 55:A beautiful hotel located in a picturesque location. Very friendly staff that always found a solution to all my queries. Worth considering if you like relaxing in distant locations that most people haven't heard about.

Review 56:Size of bed. The bed is too small and not very comfortable. The room had enough space for a queen/king sized bed not the double provided

Review 57:Food, position, staff

Review 58:Unfortunately one of our ribeye steaks was very tough for dinner. Not good at £25.00. The other was good though.

Review 59:We loved the balcony looking over the River Fowey, especially as the tide was in for the evening and following morning of our stay. The service was very friendly and good. Most of the food was excellent, but...

Review 60:Double bed in the room we had was too smaller

Review 61:Overlooking the beautiful Fowey estuary the position couldn't be better. Staff are very helpful and accommodating and the food is good.

Review 62:the rooms were a little noisy, we could hear the next door neighbours using the bath room.

Review 63:very welcoming, superb dinners, we had the pool all to our selves

Review 64:A king size duvet on a standard size bed made it too warm. I wouldn't want to be in it on a hot summers night.

Review 65:Weather was a plus for a nice quite location.

Review 66:We had a superior room but furniture was shabby! The surfaces were badly stained and the upholstery on the armchairs was dirty with stains. Bathroom well appointed but small.

Review 67:Very good service, staff always helpful. Clean comfortable room with a spacious balcony. Views across river Fowey were wonderful. Food at breakfast and dinner was superb.

Review 68:We did not want to leave.

Review 69:We stayed for four days and wished it could have been longer. The staff without exception were very friendly and welcoming and extremely professional. They made us feel like valued guests. The hotel was comfortable and the location exceptional. And the food.......was of the best quality , imaginative and beautifully presented. We have stayed in many hotels all over the world and this one is definitely in the top league. We will certainly return.

Review 70:it seems a little under staffed we had to wait 20 minutes to find someone to get someone to order a drink at the bar.

Review 71:this is such a beautiful hotel, really relaxing and fantastic pool.

Review 72:There is not much we can say that we didn't like, but thinking really hard - perhaps the only thing was the steep and short incline to get to the hotel i.e. access. But was not difficult to find. Reading this I think you will realise its impossible to fix this - sometimes you must put a bit of effort in to get to the best places.

Review 73:We really liked the use of the spa which included swimming pool and jacuzzi, it was useful after a long day of site seeing. The hotel has spectacular views over looking the river fowey. The gentleman that checked us in, made us give 5 stars - he was excellent, good to talk to and very patient with our long line of questions (although all the information was provided in the room guide). The room comes with hairdryer and all the mod cons. Food was fantastic some of the very best food for an excellent price, the service was quick and clear (my other half was 6 months pregnant) so we had a never ending list of questions.

Review 74:Although the food was excellent, it would be expensive to eat there every night, maybe a cheaper bar menu could be looked at.

Review 75:The views from our room were fabulous

Review 76:Some noise from neighbouring rooms. Bathroom could have been a bit bigger..

Review 77:Peaceful and quiet. Balcony was nice. Very friendly staff and excellent setting. Away from the buzz of tourists but still within easy reach of Foweys

Review 78:Was not allowed to smoke on the terrace outside the breakfast room, instead had to make my way towards the car park everytime I wanted to smoke.

Review 79:Very pleasant staff, welcoming and friendly.

Review 80:We did not have any dislikes! The only problem I had was as a result of a neck discomfort, the pillows on the bed were too hard for my liking.

Review 81:We particularly liked the staff, who without exception were friendly and helpful. The extra touches with the canapes and the baked flavoured bread on the dinner table were delightful. We were not able to sample the swimming pool - our fault, not the hotel's.

Review 82:No black pudding or beans at breakfast! Tiny tv in room but too busy in Jacuzzi anyway Ran out of steaks on Saturday evening

Review 83:Indoor Pool & Jacuzzi Free Parking Room with estuary view Breakfast quality Evening Meal Quality Service friendly but not overpowering

Review 84:Wifi was not working correctly during our visit - only able to get online when sitting in the bar area - A temporary problem which will be resolved soon.

Review 85:Location Views Staff Free parking Food

Review 86:Nothing !!!!

Review 87:View from room. Marvellous staff and the owner must be a very good recruiter and/or trainer of staff. Excellent food - don't know how often the menu is changed but limited items majoring on fish would define length of stay or eating in the hotel.

Review 88:Despite searching our room extensively we never found the mini bar. For a superior room at £110 per night, it was rather cramped, bar prices were rather extortionate -reflected in the fact nobody used the bar there! But for £110 per night, don't use cheap toilet paper!

Review 89:We felt that the expense was purely for the view, which was outstanding. The food was delicious but very expensive, the staff were really helpful and friendly, particularly the breakfast waitress.

Review 90:Problems with logging onto the Wifi

Review 91:Location and views, staff were so lovely and happy, facilities great to relax and the food was fantastic. Would absolutely recommend as a quiet break away

Review 92:We came away for a relaxing weekend however the Hotel was nosier than our home! You could hear every noise from the rooms above and next door due to very thin walls. Television noise from other rooms was unbearable and although the staff went out of their way to resolve the problem they cant change the walls.

Review 93:The staff and location.

Review 94:Wi-Fi was very poor and the hotel could have been made better with a lift especially for disabled access. Access to the car park was via the drive which is approximately 1 in 2 incline.

Review 95:We liked everything, good staff, good food, good and well appointed room. The hotel in general was very warm, well decorated, clean and extremely comfortable wherever you were in the building.

Review 96:the wifi was a bit dodgy

Review 97:the stay here was excellent the staff were very attentive and the room was lovely with views up the river. the food was exceptional. a totally awesome stay

Review 98:Bit of a distance from Fowey - but worth it for the facilities this hotel offers

Review 99:View, staff very friendly, food in restaurant excellent, good choice of breakfast, easy free parking. Spacious rooms.

Review 100:Difficult access to and through Golant, very steep drive and not easy access from Car Park to reception.

Review 101:Lovely views, very friendly, helpful staff, warm comfortable homely feel, lovely food, beautifully presented. All rooms with river view.

Review 102:I was very disapointed that swimming pool and hot tube wasn´t working due to broken boiler.

Review 103:Lovely and helpful staff. Stunning view from room..beautiful area.

Review 104:Walls between bedrooms are very thin you can hear everything. Very small TV in the bedrooms. Not the hotels fault Do not use recommended SAT Nav route once in Golant it will send you on the wrong lane.

Review 105:Fantastic view over the river, Excellent food. Staff friendly/attentive also very helpful.

Review 106:The pool was not attached to the hotel, across the far side of the car park and changing facilities were basic. My wife is allergic to fish and so found the evening meal choice limited.

Review 107:Comfortable bedroom with fabulous view over the river. Friendly staff. Lovely relaxed lounge. Breakfast was good too.

Review 108:Hotel bar needs to offer at least one keg beer or lager.

Review 109:Stunning location. Courteous, efficient staff, all with a smile. Sublime food. Comfortable, relaxed atmosphere.

Review 110:The day it rained!

Review 111:The location overlooking the River Fowey, the professional manner of the staff, the swimming pool and hot tub. In general, just loved it!

Review 112:If I had any negative feed back is the maitress was too soft for me.

Review 113:Everything from friendliness of staff, couldnt do enough for us.The room was comfotable and very clean. The evening meal was way passed our expectation.Waiters were very professional. What made out staff were the fab view from our room.Highly recommend this hotel.

Review 114:On arrival we found the room to smell quite damp. The lamps above the bed were thick with dust and the black valance sheet on the bed was also very dusty. We did complain and the lamps were vacuumed cleaned. The noise from the room above kept us awake until the early hours. Very noisy floorboards and cupboards! We moved to another hotel after two nights.

Review 115:The hotel is situated in an amazing location with breathtaking views across the river. The staff were helpful and friendly and the food was really nice too.

Review 116:Tired room, not very clean. Furniture, dressing table, bedside cabinets, seen better days. Balcony was nice but unusable if raining as one above had slatted floor so water dripped through. Wifi not very good.

Review 117:Location and view over river.

Review 118:nothing to dislike, the weather was excellent, so it was an very enjoyable stay. bit of a steep slope up from the road to hotel, but not a problem.

Review 119:he room was a good size, very comfortable and clean. the view, as shown on/line, was exceptional. The staff were very efficient and friendly and polite.

Review 120:Furniture and decor very dated. Didn't like the inflexibility of the proprietor when refusing a discount as the shower didn't work!

Review 121:Location was good but in need of an update.

Review 122:For the location (far from everywhere) you do end up paying allot of money (London 5*) and facilities are not quite 5*Walls are thin, you will hear your "neighbours" watch TV, and well errmmm.... make some noise... :) But the view is good

Review 123:View, staff, food...

Review 124:We were made to feel very comfortable and there was a relaxing atmosphere. The ever changing views were breath-taking. The food was delicious. And, the shower was outstanding!

Review 125:The hand rail on the steep incline to and from the hotel could be improved as it was too low,and more lighting as it was difficult to navigate in the dark; perhaps some steps at the side of the drive for pedestrians.

Review 126:I loved loved loved the position of the hotel and the view from the bedroom over the river, having the full balcony to relax on, the fabulous hot tub and indoor swimming pool with terrace was superb.staff very attentive, food delicious.Exellent all round.

Review 127:Train passes at around 530 but it is so great on every other point, this didn't spoil our stay and wouldn't put us off a return visit. It was a quirky point!

Review 128:Very clean and comfortable. Very attentive staff, marvellous food. Beds comfortable, very peaceful and lovely views. Will return!

Review 129:Small breakfasts, would be nice the see more choices. Unsecured WiFi with very slow connectivity.

Review 130:Evening meals were fantastic. Very high quality fresh food. Beautiful location.

Review 131:Ladder in pool broken, drive too steep when walking down

Review 132:Individual attention, breakfast variety, local sourced fresh food, Views from bedroom were excellent and tranquil and panoramas very therapeutic .

Review 133:Tucked out of the way down a long winding path and then up the hill with a very steep driveway, so challenging for car/driver. Not an issue for us.

Review 134:Magnificent view of the river. Excellent pool and hot-tub facilities. Food excellent. Rates and ambiance suitable for professionals and mature couples. Recommend.

Review 135:Waterproof mattress protector made bed hot. Noisy fridge. Very steep driveway for driving or walking. Tight car park.

Review 136:The food was first class. Breakfast was very well cooked with quality ingredients. Dinner was beautifully presented using local produce and absolutely delicious. Fresh milk in room fridge for tea/coffee. Very friendly and helpful staff. Peaceful.

Review 137:Small room, rubbish pillows, poor car park design, wafer thin walls, cold swimming pool no towels available, room was dirty and the pictures on the website were taken 10 years ago at least.

Review 138:Staff, breakfast.

Review 139:Poor vegetarian choice on the restaurant menu Windows didn't open in the restaurant. Would have been nice to have had tables laid for breakfast outside on such a beautiful day

Review 140:Good view from the balcony Lovely breakfast Staff helpful Comfortable bed

Review 141:Beautiful view from the balcony. Very attentive staff. Delicious high standard meal in the restaurant. Getting the swimming pool and hot tub to ourselves.

Review 142:Breakfast service in the restaurant, for us, started at least half an hour too late, though the food was very good. The internet was free, though the signal was not very robust - this was probably not the fault of the hotel.

Review 143:We enjoyed all aspects of what the hotel offered. It was quiet and the service was always very good. Evening dinner was very good, professionally prepared and served, though a little pricey.

Review 144:Felt like staying in an old peoples home bar was closed at 10pm lightsnot working in corridors walls paper thin rude staff beautiful viewthough not worth the money they charge

The Fine Print

Please note that as this hotel is built into the cliff, it is not suitable for those with limited mobility, and there is no disabled access.
