Reviews for The Fowey Hotel
Review 1:Everything about The Fowey Hotel was just great. The welcome, the named parking space, a member of staff coming out to greet us as we were parking, couldn't wish for anything more. The attention to detail was great, the hotel were in touch from as soon as we booked to make sure we had everything we needed. The room was great large, comfortable with everything you needed. Lovely spacious bathroom with a bath, shower and all toiletries provided. The cleanliness of the room was perfect. All in all one of the best breaks we have had in a UK hotel.
Review 2:Would only say that room was a little run down i.e. Inefficient shower and needed new carpet
Review 3:Good food and lovely views across water to Polruan from our room
Review 4:Tea pot full of grounds left from previous occupant (Missed by maid 2 days running); breakfast on second day (waffle with 'crispy' bacon) was inedible - waffle leathery and bacon soggy.
Review 5:Very friendly staff with usual good service.
Review 6:The breakfast was not good. One breakfast came with items missing and the bacon looked and tasted as if it had been steamed. My waffle was far too doughy. You can get better from the freezer cabinet in Iceland,
Review 7:The welcome and the facilities
Review 8:Please warn people about the car park. It would have been very difficult to get into car park/let alone park my 4 x 4 pickup. fortunately we went in husbands car.
Review 9:Location Breakfast very good
Review 10:Each meal was a disappointment. Decor was drab on the whole. Access by car was an adventure.
Review 11:The staff were pleasant on the whole, committed to enjoying their work and looking after the guests. The hotel has good views and is in walking proximity to town and countryside-both sides of the river. It is also protected from the prevailing winds.
Review 12:Lack of car park space, had to leave my car in the main town car park (15 min walk uphill) for a whole week. The decor in the rooms were rather tired and the carpet nearly threadbare.
Review 13:The staff were friendly, helpful and highly knowledgable about the locall area. The food was lovely and fresh plus mainly locally sourced. The position and views are to die for.
Review 14:Hotel parking although available wasn't cheap and was extremely tight.
Review 15:It is in a great location with beautiful views across the bay, a really excellent restaurant and genuinely helpful staff
Review 16:I am coeliac so needed gluten free food - unfortunately all of the staff did not fully understand this - I was given a dessert which was not gluten free (even though I asked twice to confirm it was) - as a result of this I was unwell in the night. The staff were very apologetic and we were given a voucher for B&B plus evening meal for 2 to be used over the next year at one of their hotels.
Review 17:The location of the property is excellent
Review 18:Not really a complaint, but the turn down service, was really too early between 6.15 and 7pm, usually when we were getting ready to go out.
Review 19:Cenerally located within easy walking distance of the town
Review 20:Very friendly and helpful staff. We had not reserved a car parking space but was allocated one upon arrival. Yes it cost £10.00 but better than being away from the hotel. Location and room we had was large and clean. Always wonder when you request a 'dog friendly' room what it will be like. No worries! Food and service in the restaurant was excellent.
Review 21:Old hotel a little rough around the edges, unseasoned food catering for a definitely older clientele.
Review 22:The views over the harbour were stunning. Staff were professional and welcoming. The gin selection
Review 23:Aside from the great location, the hotel itself is well maintained with nice sized rooms and good in-room facilities. Staff is attentive, polite and generally well trained.
Review 24:The parking is very difficult but this is not the fault of the hotel.
Review 25:Beautiful hotel with wonderful, friendly staff. Room was a good size with fantastic sea view.
Review 26:The bedroom was not at all as shown on your website or on the hotel's own website. It was tatty, ugly and overlooked a wall. To say it needed re-decorating is an understatement and to be charged over £330 for a 2-night stay was unbelievably bad value for money (in addition, the hotel places surcharges on everyday facilities, eg car parking £10, room service £5...) I left a day early as I could not face a second night in such a dismal room. One of the worst hotels I have ever stayed in.
Review 27:The view from the hotel reception rooms and the nicely decorated communal areas (lounge, bar).
Review 28:Hotel is supposed to be dog friendly but we weren't able to take the dog into the bar. We were directed to a separate room with no atmosphere that staff ignored. One evening we were asked to leave this room so they could set up for breakfast and had no choice but to go to our room. As it was hot one morning we asked to have breakfast on the balcony so our dog didn't have to go in the car but we were told that was not possible ...that's not dog friendly. Staff were aloof and quite jobs worth. We had dinner reservation so had drink in bar first and were given a menu but then ignored whist other couples had their order taken and were seated in restaurant. In the end we took ourselves into the restaurant 15 mins after our reservation time to find the other couples had been seated at the better tables and only table set was next to kitchen.... Disappointing.
Review 29:Lovely views and convenient system to book parking, although expensive
Review 30:The room was quite small and could do with updating. The bed was fairly uncomfortable. The bathroom could also do with updating.
Review 31:Staff were excellent. Just a short walk into the town center.
Review 32:Wonderful location and building but really would benefit from redecoration I a more stylish and upmarket way. Then it would be outstanding.
Review 33:The location and views - fabulous.
Review 34:Driving to the entrance of the hotel is abit tricky as the road is narrow. Parking may be an issue, but we were able to park outside for our 4 day stay.
Review 35:Beautiful historic hotel with great views of the estuary. There are three rooms (including the bar) and the balcony where you could sit and admire the views on the ground floor plus two garden areas. Decor was lovely throughout and the food was fabulous. Staff were very helpful and friendly.
Review 36:On the total bill of in excess of £500 a parking charge seems to be a little bit unnecessary
Review 37:Outstanding position and service you would not find in a chain Hotel
Review 38:Room 406 had only a 'French door', no window as well, so door had to be open at night for ventilation - not comfortable for security even in Fowey ...! Some décor 'tired' and a bit of stair carpeting worn through
Review 39:Quality of food - 2 breakfasts & 1 dinner Spacious dining room Location and sea/river view Gardens, terraces and outside seating Named space for car parking before arrival Staff are locals
Review 40:Only grumble is that the pillows were too soft.
Review 41:Location superb, hotel although dated was generally comfortable and well decorated. staff were polite and efficient.
Review 42:We could not find fault with anything
Review 43:The hotel was beautiful with fantastic views across the estuary. All of the staff were very helpful and always had a smile. Our room was lovely and big and very clean and comfortable. A very relaxing break, one of the best places we have stayed in. Would definitely recommend and re visit.
Review 44:Bathroom hadn't been thoroughly cleaned when we arrived. Bathroom could do with a little bit of modernisation. Make sure to book your car space in advance. Restaurant kitchen closes for dinner at 9pm
Review 45:Location of the hotel and staff are amazing. The hotel is truly beautiful. I would visit again for sure.
Review 46:The warmth of the welcome, the staff's attentiveness and friendliness, its location is perfect. This is a great place to stay in Fowey with stunning views over the water and across to Polruan. Highly recommended. The staff are a credit to the Hotel. Everybody is exceptional. They have a wonderful sun terrace at lunchtime where they serve food and drinks plus two sunny gardens down below with views across the water. All perfect.
Review 47:The price list of the Gin Bar did not show the prices of the Gin, turned out to be expensive! Also onsite parking is pricey at £10 per night.
Review 48:Lovely location overlooking the Fowey estuary and Polruan. Excellent food in restaurant beautifully served. Overall a very pleasant stay.
Review 49:Bed was not very comfortable. A little bit on the pricey side.
Review 50:Great staff. Very professional friendly and helpful. Very nice location and beautiful views, garden and lounges.
Review 51:The cleanliness and standard of food is a real let down. Stayed for a weekend, breakfast both mornings not good. 1 meal in restaurant also not good.
Review 52:The location of this hotel is perfect and the staff are excellent.
Review 53:The only problem is parking but we solved it by a weekly ticket in the nearby car park.
Review 54:The location was spectacular with unbelievable views. The hotel staff could not have been better and the food was incredible.
Review 55:Request for a parking space needs to be done in advance and is charged at £10 per night. Unfortunately when we arrived someone else was in our parking space but this was resolved later in the day by one of the porters. Parking is very tight!
Review 56:All the staff made you feel very welcome. We ate in the restaurant on the first evening and the food was excellent. Proportion sizes were so good that we didn't have room for any desert.
Review 57:Breakfast service could be improved, several items finished by the time we arrived (9am) and had to keep asking for things which were offered routinely at other hotels e.g second pot of tea, sauce etc.
Review 58:Beautiful view & very comfy bed.
Review 59:the mattress of the bed much too smooth and the service of the restaurant could have been more relax and friendly. Also a bit slow.
Review 60:The spot was excellent and the decoration made us have a real feeling of old Britain. the ancient lift was charming and the rooms great comfort . very helpful staff at the reception.
Review 61:Parking limited and a pain even though £10 per night!; shower in bathroom tiny; no air con; overpriced really but spectacular views over river fowey which is what you pay for.
Review 62:Location and views from bar & room superb; Porter, bar and restaurant staff very friendly, helpful and courteous; Room very spacious with lots of storage
Review 63:the location was excellent. views from lounges terrific. the staff did every thing we asked for all thro only after second request. Next day. ie Toilet raiser, shower stool an extra pillow (3)
Review 64:The hotel was too quiet for our needs in the evening. After dinner there was no-one around and we walked into town every night.
Review 65:The position of the hotel is excellent with great sea views and a short walk into the town which was quite lively
Review 66:Shower in room 107 was weak. The trim was a little too warm though in fairness we didn't mention this while we were there and may have been able to borrow a fan.
Review 67:Staff were friendly and helpful, particularly Jason who always had a smile for everybody. The view from the bar was stunning.
Review 68:There was nothing to dislike other than one very rude guest at breakfast but that was nothing at all to do with the hotel.
Review 69:I like everything about this hotel. Beautiful room, well kept. All the staff are really friendly and willing to help. Had a few short stays here before and will definitely be back.
Review 70:The breakfast could have been more interesting with a better buffet selection. Also, i was disappointed that the eggs were not free range. An hotel of this standard should consider the provenance of it's food and it should have free range eggs at the very least.
Review 71:The views were spectacular. The facilities and comfort
Review 72:This hotel commands the best view of the estuary & Fowey. Its old world charm and distinguished yet laid back chic sets it apart. The Estuary & sea view rooms are worth every penny just for the views but the comforts provided are excellent. The staff are very pleasant yet not intrusive. Breakfast more than substantial.Cant praise highly enough and will keep coming back.
Review 73:Lack of on-site parking and additional parking charges. Bedroom and bathroom needed updating. Bannisters on staircase difficult to use.
Review 74:Location. Public Rooms. Plenty of staff.
Review 75:The pillows were very hard. We found the room a bit stuffy despite opening our windows but we tend to prefer a cold atmosphere so this could just be our preference. Parking is extremely limited so you may get blocked in.
Review 76:The staff were extremely helpful and friendly. The rooms were exceptionally clean. Breakfast was very relaxed with wonderful views.
Review 77:Car parking is very tight though staff are on duty to assist if required. The room was looking a little tired though nevertheless comfortable.
Review 78:The hotel has a superb location overlooking the bay. The staff are extremely friendly and accommodating. The old fashioned lift is a real bonus.
Review 79:The room ( 201 ) Radiator Pipes were noisy ( Radiator's may need Bleeding )The Extractor Fan in the Adjoining room is very noisy and so when guests leave it on when they go out this is very very annoying. Both the above ( Radiators Pipes and Extractor Fan ) meant that after a stunning Day & evening meal at the Hotel ,that I had a very restless nights sleep ( reported the Extractor Fan to Reception at pm and they came up and turned off straight away and so once again great service form your staff.) I also reported the radiator noise to reception when I booked out at 9.20am Friday Morning.
Review 80:AS above the staff were brilliant , likewise the location , but hats off to the Chef as my evening meal and Breakfast was amazing quality.
Review 81:We had the last room available so didn't get a sea view and were a bit exposed to passing pedestrians..but everything else made up for it.. and we'd come back again.
Review 82:The staff were excellent. Loved the original lift..spacious rooms and perfect location.... Evening menu was great!!
Review 83:Whilst the quaint lift was a feature and a talking point, the noise and vibration of guests slamming the gates was very annoying whilst in Room 301.
Review 84:Magnificent location and views with excellent food and service.
Review 85:The exterior of the hotel looks a bit tired and in need of refurbishing/repainting. Also the car parking is very restricted and it's adviseable to pay an additional £10.00 to reserve a space.
Review 86:The position of the hotel is really good overlooking the river with it;s own terraced gardens which are very pleasant to sit out when the weather is favourable. Service very good and attentitive and overall a relaxing place to stay.
Review 87:So comfortable and communal rooms (dining room, bar etc.) all had panoramic views over the estuary. Staff were amazing - professional and lovely - felt like they really were invested in us having a good time! Room was a home from home - comfortable and spacious, brilliant comfy bed!
Review 88:We had a bad experience in the bar over a very poor glass of wine- staff were very rude - this spoilt what would have been a good stay
Review 89:The view from our room
Review 90:When we arrived on the 20th of April decided to eat in after a long journey, did not enjoy the burger it was tasteless, and chips were like oven chips, decided to eat out after that.
Review 91:loved the location and very friendly staff
Review 92:Car parking can be a challenge
Review 93:Old style honest engagement with the staff and high level of service in a well appointed but not over the top hotel in a great position with fabulous sea view rooms if requested.
Review 94:Nothing
Review 95:The staff were amazing - catered for every need and gluten free option for breakfast ! Stunning lounge area with free tea and coffee and beautiful location- simple but very sweet room
Review 96:Parking not always easy because of limited number of spaces - try and reserve one when you book.
Review 97:The staff are friendly, knowledgeable and attentive without being intrusive. Great martinis, great Victorian lift and the most fantastic views out to the estuary and ocean.
Review 98:If you book online make sure you call hotel directly and book parking!
Review 99:Views, cleanliness, wonderful old working lift, evening meal was fabulous, room was to die for!
Review 100:Parking was a bit tricky, due to the hotels location.
Review 101:We had a good stay the staff were very friendly and helpful. The bar was well stocked with a variety of local drinks. Best of all the food was delicious and we had very good service. Love the old original lift.
Review 102:Having to leave!
Review 103:From our first contact with the FHM Lindsey until the end of our time, all of the staff were outstanding being polite, friendly, efficient but never intrusive. Food, rooms and, of course, position of hotel were excellent. Without a doubt, our best ever stay in an hotel.
Review 104:Wonderful view from lounge and breakfast room (whatever the weather), comfortable, large room, great customer service, good breakfast (try the home made granola). Will definitely come back.
Review 105:Evening meal poor to ok , breakfast poor. From my one night experience the quality of food and chef/ cook needs serious attention. Also charging £10 for one night parking in out back town in March is a rip off and leaves bad feeling!
Review 106:Staff very helpful
Review 107:Poor wifi signal in most parts of the hotel except the reception area. Little or no phone signal in the area anyways so a bit beholdant to wifi but then sometimes it good to be cut off from the world for a few days! Bring back the hogs pudding!
Review 108:Great staff
Review 109:We very much enjoyed the view from our own and the public rooms. The evening meal was superb and the staff were very well trained and gave excellent service.
Review 110:Waited 3 hours for towels which were not in room on arrival and had to ask a second time. Cooked breakfast was very disappointing, over cooked.
Review 111:Location very good, hotel tired in places but good value for the price. So glad I reserved a parking space as very limited parking.
Review 112:Limited parking but no fault of the hotel and the staff very helpful in suggesting alternative options.
Review 113:Happy friendly smiley staff which made for a relaxed atmosphere at this well run hotel. Great views and cosy public areas. Breakfast excellent.
Review 114:bedrooms very average and bed was not at all comfortable, cooked breakfast was ok but nothing special. I would expect the room/breakfast of this level in a room of less than £100 per night not £200
Review 115:a lovely location with beautiful views. friendly staff
Review 116:Travelling by car the streets are narrow, I could not see any local parking that lasted longer than 2 hours so you had to reserve & pay for limited hotel parking space. The furnishings are old and need replacing with new.
Review 117:It was winter but can imagine in the summer what a pleasant view you would get. Staff are very helpful
Review 118:The room was very, very warm when we got in (Just our preference). cured easily by opening a window :)
Review 119:Great views, very quiet room (302) which had great views of the harbour. Beds were just right for us (just hard enough) and slept like a log. With the windows open we couldn't hear any traffic - just the waves. Everyone who works there seems to have a smile on their face which is great.
Review 120:The room was fine but needs a bit of TLC, very stained old carpet and cracked tiles in bathroom.
Review 121:Been to the fowey hotel many times and each time it is great. Great setting, love the breakfast and bed comfy. Love the old lift also!
Review 122:The beds were not always made properly -- they just pulled the duvet over wrinkled sheets. (This was the only thing that wasn't excellent.)
Review 123:Great location, friendly and helpful staff, comfortable large room with a fabulous view, great bathroom and shower, quiet. Excellent restaurant too.
Review 124:We stayed in room 208 and it was a little tired, needs a paint and new carpet.Window rattled when the wind blew and there was a leak in the bath Fowey town is awful. Pokey, dark dreary and very uninviting. Virtually nowhere to eat and such a shabby town. We thought we had come to a working quarry for the weekend,The houses were scruffy and unkempt. We travelled to Looe and it was like being on a different planet, clean, bright, pleasant with loads to do and places to eat and plenty of parking. We drove through Par which needs renaming and Well Under putting in front of all the signs. On a positive note they may be able to twin with Homs in Syria.
Review 125:The welcoming at the Fowey hotel could not have been better. Professional. courteous, polite and very easy. The staff here are what makes this place stand out.
Review 126:disorganised service in restaurant (a new experience compared to previous year). This review is too prescriptive with its questions/answer options and does not allow for sufficiently specific feedback.
Review 127:evening food excellent, especially deserts. Other meals reasonable.
Review 128:As I say, I loved everything, but there did seem to be a slight problem with catering supplies. (Pies ran out on the bar menu by 1930, no blue cheese for cheese board, no hog's pudding at breakfast). Apparently supplies were awaited, but may have detracted a little for some people.
Review 129:Absolutely everything (especially the lift). Real style remaining throughout the hotel from its Victorian Resort origins, but updated, whilst retaining a beautiful 1930s (Miss Marple comes to mind) style.
Review 130:nothing
Review 131:The hotel has a lovely position overlooking the sea. The breakfasts were very good - great selection to suit everyone. We ate in the hotel three nights and found the food very good and the service was excellent. The staff were very welcoming and helpful. Would definitely stay here again.
Review 132:There was nothing we did not like about this place.
Review 133:Location was fantastic especially the room we had 106 get it if you can. The whole place had a gentleness about it. Well worth booking the parking space as it is a fair trek to the public car park.
Review 134:Wedding reception in hotel. Music loud til midnight on the Sat night. Double glazed windows might help.
Review 135:Location exc. Staff superb. Would stay again.
Review 136:Parking was tricky as they cram as many cars as possible into a small area.
Review 137:The rooms were very clean, nice bathrooms and staff lovely. Breakfast was really good.
Review 138:The walls in the rooms are a little thin and the décor a little tired but nothing that grates, and I am only putting something in here to be helpful to the hotel. The only other thing that you need to be aware of is the restricted parking, its part of the charm but could be difficult for some
Review 139:The staff were all very professional and welcoming and obviously local to the area with a good team spirit. The hotel has all the charm of a well used quality English coast hotel which is what it is. The food served in the restaurant was exceptional good at reasonable prices, well done all
Review 140:The hotel is charming, the staff were excellent, very helpful and friendly. The rooms spacious and clean. A wonderful experience in a beautiful location. We will certainly be back.
