Reviews for Abbey House Hotel
Review 1:We weren't told that we would need to book for dinner so we had to squeeze in around existing bookings; being Xmas it would have been nice to have a little reminder when we checked in! But this is a very minor issue!
Review 2:It was a lovely hotel in a beautiful setting. We stayed in a suite and weren't disappointed! We only wish we could have stayed a few more days.
Review 3:New Year's Eve The Hotel closed the main bar/ restaurant to a private function, along with the 2 other private functions, leaving us nowhere to go I expected better
Review 4:Although we arrived for breakfast just as they were putting out the hot food. It wasn't hot enough for me!
Review 5:our room was lovely, clean and spacious!
Review 6:Food buffet at night was not good...very little of it ...
Review 7:We were in our room until wedding started and we thought our room may have missed the cleaners but they did our room whilst we attended the wedding
Review 8:Unfortunately chose one of the cheaper rooms and the bed and pillows were very uncomfortable, definitely not one of the rooms/pictures advertised and could do with updating.
Review 9:Breakfast choice was great, friendly staff.
Review 10:Our room was 115 above the room they have parties in music so loud couldn't listen to tv and floor was vibrating had hardly any sleep because of it
Review 11:Very helpful staff we were on honeymoon had problems first night due to noise from party under our room they upgraded us for 2nd night to a suite
Review 12:The welcome at reception left a lot to be desired when the receptionist can't find your booking and practically accuses you of not making the reservation - lack of hot water, room okay but not exceptional and breakfast was delivered with items missing and when we called down there was a lack of ownership and hung up the phone!
Review 13:Lovely location and we were looking forward to returning for our second visit and had upgraded to a suite
Review 14:Waited 10 minutes for breakfast order to be taken, and after a further 50 minutes the cooked food had still not arrived and we had to leave. Not acceptable in our view.
Review 15:Well appointed room, generally courteous staff.
Review 16:The hotel could have added lunch and dinner to the package with a reasonable extra amount. Would have been nice with lunch and dinner option provided while booking for an extra charge.
Review 17:The view from my room was stunning and really loved the ambience in this hotel. The location is lovely, the staff was very helpful and courteous and the breakfast was very tasty.
Review 18:The only negative thing I could right was it was very warm in the room but the staff came and turned the underfloor heating down
Review 19:We have chosen this place to hold our wedding as it was just beautiful the staff were very helpful and friendly and the food at oscers was perfect we stayed in the princess suit and it was beautiful
Review 20:nothing not to like,
Review 21:lovely warm welcolm, very clean room and bathroom. All staff very professional and friendly. Breakfast very good. First class hotel.
Review 22:The temperature control was too low down on the wall. But chaotic for breakfast at busy times not enough staff to clear tables & take orders.
Review 23:Beautiful hotel, lovely rooms
Review 24:That we didn't get to stay for longer!
Review 25:Where do I start! We loved everything about this hotel. Very classy and the value for money was great. The perfect romantic getaway just before Xmas. Loved it! The bathroom sold it for me. ☺️
Review 26:Oscars restaurant too noisy. Singer made it impossible to hold conversatio. More appropriate for a less expensive venue. Service also quite slow, but staff working hard to cope, especially at breakfast.
Review 27:There was a damp smell in corridor from reception to the bedroom wing
Review 28:The decor was lovely and stylish but more importantly all staff were friendly and eager to help. Also lovely views from bedroom and gsrdens
Review 29:The receptionist on the Friday morning let all the other staff down and needs to develop more of a 'can do' attitude. With awards for culinary excellence, this did not seem to extend to the fare for larger numbers or the breakfast, which was only lukewarm.
Review 30:The hotel was clean and comfortable. It is a lovely, historical building set in beautiful grounds.
Review 31:I liked everything, the staff cannot do enough for you and so friendly and helpful, food exceptional, it was my daughters wedding and it could not have been in a nicer place, a truly wonderful day, thank you so much.
Review 32:Broken bed, asking 3 times for replacement, not informed a new room had been allocated, however new room was shabby needed refurbishing before any moving a guest . Disappointed for a 4 star hotel.
Review 33:Decor in main areas, food in Oscars
Review 34:A mistake was made on our order, they did not have a room for us. It took several phone calls, e-mails and pressure from Booking.com before they offered us another room. This was more expensive, and they expected us to pay ! We also asked about the possibility of being able to keep the rooms a little longer than checkout , we received no reply. When I asked the receptionist she answered in a very rude tone that it would cost us 10 pounds per hour. To be honest almost all the staff was miserable. We eventually got the compensation, but no appologies for their mistakes and lack of service, which would have meant considerably more.
Review 35:The location
Review 36:The price of the drinks was very dear and the breakfast was really not good, bacon was very crispy and other items were over cooked
Review 37:The meal we had at there Wedding was excellent
Review 38:You could feel the springs in the bed and it was two twins shoved together which meant when I rolled over at night it was uncomfortable. Rooms also seems outdated and not worth the price.
Review 39:Oscars restaurant was to die for.. Great staff and lovely food. Well worth the money
Review 40:Beds really small felt like my partner was sleeping on top of me.
Review 41:Staff lovely and friendly, went out of there way to make sure we were happy. Location and views amazing
Review 42:Was in spring suite. Opened slide window n loads of flies came in. They had nested between the slide n outer windows. Between gap was hundreds of dead flies that could of easily been cleaned up. Breakfast in bed was ruined due to flies. Thankfully was ready for checking out or would have demanded another room. Paid for hotel n bar bills via card, no receipts given, music from another room seemed to be pounding in our room. Think was coming via air vent or chimney. Was glad to get home for a good sleep.
Review 43:Quite expensive in the restaurant and the portions were small
Review 44:Winter room was excellent for a special occasion. Food was brilliant. Place was beautiful and staff friendly
Review 45:We booked lunch for 12 people and although the staff were lovely, the service was not very fast. We were told to sit and have drinks in the bar even though our table was ready, which made the wait even longer.
Review 46:I was a little disappointed that I had a room in the new wing but there was a wedding on so I assume that all the rooms in the main building were booked. The breakfast was disappointing inasmuch that the sausages and eggs were not cooked. I did tell the waiter who just said oh dear thats a shame. The hotel was very busy with the wedding but I will would have expected better service in this regard from hotel of this standard
Review 47:the hotel was amazing
Review 48:Evening meal Thursday,Lamb extremely fatty told person behind bar ( no remarks or comments) Shower tray in room overflowed reported it Friday told Saturday by reception they know a new deeper tray needed. Husband spent time having to mop it up. At breakfast young lady cleaned tables on either side by using a spray which the mist came across our table Suggest spraying into cloth first. Personally don't like having to keep searching for cheaper days on web site as same room over two night £16 difference. Initially only one night available then later next week Thursday became available cheaper. Friday booked for £96 week later became available £48
Review 49:Location excellent hotel very clean most of the staff helpful & smiled Breakfast very good.Cleaner very helpful a credit to the hotel she was worthy of 4*
Review 50:On the morning of check out adout 9.50 the fire alarm went off and there was drilling going on in the room below
Review 51:The hotel and the grounds were very nice the bar area was good and the staff
Review 52:Disappointed with breakfast, toast either warm bread or burnt, scrambled egg had dark lumps unappetising, table setting had used plate with sugar trail from previous guest. Dining in conservatory too cold cos it's partly open to the elements.
Review 53:Beautiful building, art work & setting, impressive wedding venue, this was our second visit cos we liked everything about it so much and we will stay again.
Review 54:There were 7 of us staying in 4 rooms in total. On the Saturday evening, although there were unoccupied eating tables which were set and ready, and which remained unoccupied all evening, we were refused food - "kitchen is at capacity". I asked if something could be provided, even if just snacks or a sandwich (we were a family with 5 children) but were simply told, glibly, "no - we're not a leisure hotel". Whatever that means...... I explained this to the receptionist whilst checking out. She said that wasn't good and the manager would contact me. He never did. Not good enough.
Review 55:No cider on draught. Drinks over priced. Staff were a bit stand offish, although wedding planner helpful. Initial double charging for room whichwas sorted by credit card company, but never acknowledged by hotel as their mistake. A bit of a distance from town.
Review 56:Breakfast was good. Extensive grounds. Good car park. Good locationfor a wedding, but overpriced.
Review 57:Service at breakfast was poor but food was excellent when it arrived.
Review 58:Bedroom 127 what a fantastic room! Bar staff at the function we attended, always had a smile on their faces.
Review 59:Sadly between 2 and 5 they only served afternoon tea which was a bit disappointing . Also we attended a wedding at this hotel and was told we would get a discount but we never received it .
Review 60:It was very modern and lovely food xxx
Review 61:Only one choice of vegetarian main meal although two choices were shown on the website. After it was made clear the choice wasn't agreeable, no suggestion was made to offer anything else
Review 62:Excellent disabled facilities
Review 63:On arrival heating in the room was on and windows closed which was unnecessary on a mild day and made getting ready for a wedding reception uncomfortable.
Review 64:Very pleasant staff, most helpful. Excellent breakfast.
Review 65:Cold in alfresco dining area . Bedroom dated with stains on bed valance and marks on walls and carpets ! Bathroom smelly and needing upgraded
Review 66:The setting and main building were fabulous .
Review 67:The £5 room service charge turned an £6.99 sandwich to £12! and I mean 4 x triangles and a fistful of chips.
Review 68:Grate staff and a great room with good facilities.
Review 69:Wedding on in hotel same evening. Weren't informed unfortunately and was therefore a very loud night. Music played until 3am and wedding guests playing knock-a-door run at 4am. Hotel staff should have done more to keep guest parties separate. On a positive side excellent food in restaurant.
Review 70:Booking.com had failed to instruct the hotel of our need for a travel cot, then the hotel failed to provide one for an hour after we checked in, meaning we couldn't put our child to bed. My booking instructions clearly stated our requirement and I even made a separate request so for it to be unfulfilled was disappointing and a bit of an upheaval to our plans.
Review 71:Long wait in restaurant on first night of our stay for evening meal (over an Hour). Did not use restaurant again for evening meal as the food was not enjoyable.
Review 72:Very quiet and peaceful. Breakfast was ok.
Review 73:Went to attend a wedding during which the service was excellent. BUT unfortunately, catering for a previous evening's meal for around thirty, the number of staff was inadequate. Similarly for breakfast the following day. A minor niggle: our bathroom sink plug didn't hold water (Room 119). Too minor to report!
Review 74:Lovely gardens, easy parking and fascinating historic building. Would suggest this is a superb wedding venue - but for a big dinner the night before - find somewhere else!
Review 75:Disabled walkin shower had no handles. And no hooks in bathroom for toilet bags. Shortage of drawers in bedroom
Review 76:Lovely big room for my husbands mobility scooter. Meals were lovely and the staff very obliging.
Review 77:The rude staff and not beimg able to have dinner at the restaurant as a prebooked Abbey guest after driving all day to get to the accommodation.
Review 78:The luxurious room
Review 79:The room we were put in on the first night was not of the standard we expected as we had paid for a deluxe room, and it was obviously one of the rooms that were still waiting to be refebished, but even so it was very small ,and although we had read on the website that with weddings going on there would be music until midnight which we didn't have a problem with the problem was the guests from the wedding that had decided not to go to bed and were on the sun terrace below our room window until 6-30am!! Talking and laughing, so we had no sleep that night. I complained to the duty manager the next morning about the noise and the poor standard of the room and he did then show us another room at the other end of the hotel that was quieter and of a much better standard and we agree for the house keeper to move our belongings to the room while we were at the wedding we were up there for. The remainder of the stay was very enjoyable.
Review 80:The hotel and the grounds are magnificent.the staff were very friendly and efficient.
Review 81:Room 127 is above the kitchen with its noisy fans. Service at dinner depended on the staff - sometimes leisurely, once rushed with the aperitif served after the entree and wine. Two sets of 3 steps between the lift and room. Not enough space to hang 2 sets of towels in the bathroom (the hotel hides one set in the wardrobe) Minimal wardrobe space and drawers. The Abbott Bar was never open hence no real lounge after dinner.
Review 82:The building style, room size and bed comfort. The location (in its own grounds away from traffic and Barrow town)
Review 83:Evening meal at Oscars was over priced with loud dance music from the next room.
Review 84:Beautiful room and would have stayed another night on that basis but you were full.
Review 85:Unable to provide room to get changed in for wedding except disabled toilet which was very nice There were 5 adults trying to get ready it would be nice if there was a proper room to change in I realise it was busy with weddings but this would improve standard even more
Review 86:Beautiful gardens and decor in hotel
Review 87:Absolutely spotless hotel in outstanding grounds absolutely faultless our only regret was not discovering abbey house before we got married as we would definitely got married there !
Review 88:It's looking a little tired in the rooms
Review 89:The organisation of my Son's wedding... (Mr & Mrs Melling), was superb as indeed was the whole occasion... Thank you!
Review 90:THE FACT THAT THE SHOWER DIDN'T WORK,THE STAFF TRIED IT AND SAID THAT THERE WAS NO PROBLEM, BUT WE COULDNT GET IT TO WORK
Review 91:AN ALL ROUND EXCELLENT HOTEL IN LOVELY SURROUNDINGS
Review 92:The week before my stay I was informed by the hotel that there would be a function on the Saturday I was staying, although the music would be turned off at midnight. Unfortunately this is never a guarantee of a peaceful nights sleep as people then tend to go to the bar. I don't know why the hotel left it so late to tell me. I had booked about 6-8 weeks earlier. I sent an email to cancel. No reply. I called to cancel and spoke to someone on reception who said they would cancel and confirm via email. Nothing. I called again and spoke to another member of staff who explained I had to cancel via Booking.com. I asked why someone couldn't have told me that on the 2 previous occasions I had been in contact but there was no apology, just excuses about it being someone else's fault not hers. I think I had a narrow escape. I would have been driving for 5 hours to get to a noisy hotel with inconsiderate staff. Beware, this is a popular wedding venue I have since found out.
Review 93:Quiet location, lovely surroundings, had evening walk round grounds and down to the abbey, Despite your warning of wedding parties we were not disturbed. Helpful staff.
Review 94:Lack of option on drinks at bar. Food served at set times - couldn't get light bite or bar meal after 2:30 and before 6:00. Restaurant option only in the evening. Had food delivered to room and it wasn't very good.
Review 95:Clean and tidy. Friendly staff.
Review 96:School Prom in evening with band immediately below my room and no soundproofing. Appallingly noisy until midnight, unable to rest or sleep. This was compounded by reception staff refusal to deal with my complaint and the hotel management' s total lack of any response or communication to date in spite of several promises. Good hotel spoiled by management. The worst I've encountered in forty years of business travel.
Review 97:The hotel is in a lovely setting and attractively furnished.
Review 98:Only negative was the wedding music was loud but we were pre-warned and with our TV on you couldn't hear it. We were in the bar later then the wedding party went on anyway!
Review 99:The restaurant was great, the room was great. We had a suite and we loved it!
Review 100:* wasnt told about reduced / limited evening menu,,,till i sat at my table !! * table service was hit and miss too.... * english breakfast was just one item of each,,,
Review 101:great room [windermere suite ..] good wi-fi lovely gardens / garden room
Review 102:Lovely hotel, stunning location, friendly and helpful staff, some of the best food we had eaten in a very long time - just a shame we had to rush off so early in the morning!
Review 103:There was nothing to dislike.
Review 104:Beautiful building inside and out, well restored. The staff were welcoming and friendly, reception, cleaners and bar staff and the cleanliness throughout was excellent. Lovely gardens. The breakfast was something special too.
Review 105:No residents lounge. Had to wait for a breakfast table at 9.45 am. Unsupervised children running everywhere including Oscars restaurant. Hospital type bathrooms.
Review 106:Location. Excellent food in Oscars Restaurant. The gardens.
Review 107:Our breakfast was extremely disappointing! Mine was not cooked and my husband's was cold. They didn't check back so we were unable to get it changed... Disappointing considering how much we had paid for the room. The rate was inclusive of breakfast but we actually did not get to eat anything. Complained when we checked out and they apologised and said it was because the hotel was busy. I would have preferred if they had offered us some money to compensate off our room rate which included breakfast. We didn't sleep during our stay because we didn't find the beds comfortable, but I suppose to an extent that may be personal preference.
Review 108:The hotel is set in lovely gardens and is very well presented. The staff were pleasant.
Review 109:The Location - we had to take the cat everywhere we went. There was lots of business people staying.
Review 110:We were upgraded to a beautiful suite with it being our anniversary. Oscar's restaurant food was out of this world. Breakfast was superb as well!
Review 111:Would be even more brilliant if there was a swimming pool and jacuzzi. And maybe some sporting facilities too.
Review 112:The location and surroundings were very beautiful. The building itself was classy and the room was to die for
Review 113:Wasn't advised to pre book a table for our evening meal, just presumed they would have enough space/tables to cater for guests so unfortunately we was told they're fully booked when we arrived at the restaurant
Review 114:Perfect location with stunning gardens, immaculate inside and out
Review 115:Lovely hotel. Staff very accommodating and friendly. Asked for early check in as husband had a meeting and they sorted it no problem. Restaurant excellent.
Review 116:Staff were brilliant and went out of their way to accommodate anything we needed. Hotel was beautifully decorated and very clean. Bed was very comfortable. Breakfast was lovely. Very friendly hotel and would definitely stay again.
Review 117:Cramped parking. Waitress couldn't remember the 'soup of the day'. Bathroom door squeaked and shower tray overflowed when shower was turned on full. Not enough teabags or choice of tea in the room. Piped music very annoying!
Review 118:Quality of the food and service. Tasteful decor and lovely gardens.
Review 119:Just a small criticism , the prawn teriyaki starter was tasty overall but the prawns were tiny and a bit dried up ! Also the bedroom walks were so thin we could hear next door arguing and going to the bathroom !!
Review 120:The staff were all very professional , the food was good and we enjoyed our stayed , hotel and grounds are lovely
Review 121:It would be perfect if all the beds were king size like we are used to at home - a lot of the rooms are just basic doubles although they are comfortable.
Review 122:Friendly helpful staff - comfortable & warm place to stay with everything we needed.
Review 123:Location is a bit out of the way.Outside seating area very limited if there is a wedding party (wedding booked every weekend this year). If the weather wasnt good apart from walking there is not many places to spend time with your pet and relax.
Review 124:Pet Friendly and nice grounds for dog walking. Fortunatly we had a nice day which also helps
Review 125:The only down side was the room - the hearing was very high with no obvious way to turn it down. I didn't ask for help from reception however so no opportunity was given to rectify from myself. The only other thing was a few tired pieces of furniture - rip in chair.
Review 126:Everything was excellent - staff were only too happy to help. Particular thanks to senior bar man who helped us get a table in the restaurant. A perfect weekend!
Review 127:Room fine however the bed was not the comfiest. Lenny Henrys beds are nicer sorry.
Review 128:The staff were very courteous and helpful. My room was fine clean and bright. The ambience of the hotel is great and I look forward to staying again. Breakfast was ok would have preferred a buffet
Review 129:The dinner menu was pathetic for a four star hotel. It was more appropriate for an American Diner. Celebrate St George's Day with sausage and mash?
Review 130:Fabulous room. Pity we couldn't have both a bath and a shower. Imaginative breakfast menu-pity the kedgeree wasn't available
Review 131:We had a lovely weekend away in this beautiful hotel. Whilst the town is a little bit out of the way, it's a beautiful location, with picturesque surroundings. We experienced great service from all members of staff, and the food in the restaurant for both dinner and breakfast was delicious.
Review 132:i didn't like the music from the great hall whilst the weddings over the weekend where on it was hard to go to sleep
Review 133:i loved the hotel very clean and the staff very friendly ... Once we moved rooms as the bed in the first one was like a trampoline we had a wonderful time and the second room was amazing .
Review 134:Lovely area with lots to do and not too far from the Lakes which is where we spent most of our time. Would stay again for sure! Service was spot on and drinks and food in the hotel were excellent.
