Reviews for The Duke of Edinburgh Hotel & Bar
Review 1:it lacks a lounge with comfortable chairs
Review 2:The building itself is lovely, the location is excellent for the station and town, service was very helpful and friendly, I found the restaurant offered very good quality, good service and easy to get a seat. bedroom and bathroom well equipped and warm, bed was comfortable
Review 3:The male receptionist was rather grumpy after realising he had charged me too much and then tried to blame me. All other staff were spot on though so cant really fault the team overall.
Review 4:Nice staff and friendly hotel/bar. Would recommend.
Review 5:Room was a tad disappointing after we had stayed previously for the same price. After previously having a top floor room which was glorious and gave us a sound nights sleep we had a ground floor room next to a noisy room, revellers outside and close to a constantly in use door. If you can get a room on the upper floor id recommend this.
Review 6:Good central location. Decent breakfast and comfy bed.
Review 7:Location was fine but wasn't much in barrow for the time of year
Review 8:Was fine to get your head down, en suit was nice, food wasn't at all good in the evening, however breakfast was fine
Review 9:No Problems
Review 10:Good location and Staff very helpful and seemed happy in their job. Had meal with friends in back room (Restaurant) Female Waitress worked very hard to serve all customers with food which was excellent and the same waitress worked tirelessly to serve a varied menu for breakfast always with a smile.
Review 11:View from the room was over the inner courtyard which was very noisy over the kitchen as staff tend to talk outside. The music from the bar was also annoying. Also the mattress springs are coming through so not very comfortable.
Review 12:An old hotel with lovely wood.
Review 13:Hotel was in a prime location shops , bars & resturant a 5 minute walk away , hotel staff very friendly . Hotel breakfast was lovely room was clean tidy would recommend and definitely return in the future .
Review 14:We've stayed in this hotel quite a few times now & don't even bother looking for another. It's great value for money, nothing is to much for staff and everyone is welcoming. Just fantastic!
Review 15:Toilet cistern made a noise for several hours during the night. Nothing else to grumble about.
Review 16:Free car parking which unlike previous reports suggest is very close to the hotel, free easy to connect wifi, warm, spacious room, quiet despite being a room facing on to the main road and very private.
Review 17:Room price extortionate compared to the establishment just down the road for a room that was less comfortable – and no heating. Heating didn’t work in the bedroom, had to rely on the towel rail in the bathroom providing heat (it didn’t). Reported to staff who said they would look at it but still off that evening. Left next day.
Review 18:Nice, clean hotel. Rooms seem fairly good standard. Staff, friendly helpful.
Review 19:creaky floors. bathroom door couldnt open fully due to position of toilet. scratched and low quality furnishings. not worth the price especially when compared to other hotels in the area
Review 20:clean and reasonably comfortable
Review 21:It would have been handy if breakfast was available earlier. 07:30 start for breakfast on a weekday is a bit late.
Review 22:Railway Station just across the road.
Review 23:The bed is hard and upon checking in they gave us a standard double when we'd paid for an executive double this was then rectified.
Review 24:The bath was amazing
Review 25:The car park is on the opposite corner of a very busy intersection and we had to cross 2 roads to get from the hotel to the car park.
Review 26:The hotel and staff were very pleasant and friendly. They were helpful when I had a query.
Review 27:Only one slight issue. My husband has never, ever been served one kipper (1/2 a pair) for breakfast. menu does say kippers (plural) Thanks
Review 28:Quality of food, and the very pleasant and friendly staff
Review 29:When I tried to contact hotel at 10pm to make them aware we were going to be late the automated service did not facilitate a connection to reception to allow us to inform them and merely made us aware that office was now closed.
Review 30:Staff were polite and curteous despite our late arrival. Hotel decor and cleanliness well maintained.
Review 31:Lovely modern hotel. Parking facilities close by. Breakfast was great with an array of options. We even had evening meal in the restaurant which was delicious and at a reasonable price.
Review 32:We had a lovely big room towards the back of the hotel. The bed was very comfortable and although we're not used to traffic noise we slept well. Breakfast was enjoyable and the staff helpful. The 11am checkout was great for us as we were down for a family funeral and it allowed us time to get ready for that after breakfast.
Review 33:Unfortunately some noisy guests on one evening who appeared to have drunk more than they could handle. They went quiet after a while so maybe dealt with by the staff?
Review 34:Great hotel, friendly & helpful staff, comfortable rooms and good food. Bar offers a good selection and the breakfast is good quality and plentiful
Review 35:I didn't like that when I booked the room I was quoted £130. and when I got to the hotel I was told it had gone up to £160. the manager changed it back to the original price but Booking.com need to watch for this in the future
Review 36:The rooms are superb and the staff are very pleasant and helpfull
Review 37:Although the hotel is beautiful the noise from abbey road was to much and I had a really bad nights sleep. I wouldn't rush back which is a shame as I was looking forward to the stay
Review 38:Beautiful deco
Review 39:Not much to complain about but the bar could do with at least one smooth bitter, only real ales available.
Review 40:Excellent reception staff. helpful bar staff. Lovely breakfast.
Review 41:Car park was a bit difficult to find, as was across the road, but was easily sorted once known.
Review 42:The hotel is beautiful on the inside, modern touches whilst trying to stay true to the older structure of the building itself. The staff couldn't be more helpful, and the room was spacious and gorgeous. Will definitely be staying there again.
Review 43:We read other reviews before booking this hotel. Most were complimentary, but one or two were a bit negative, so we had very slight doubts. However, as it turned out, everything was perfect. The staff were really pleasant, the room was lovely and clean and well proportioned. The breakfasts were really good, and we didn't have to wait long. Overall, a really pleasant stay. Thanks to everyone there.
Review 44:Our room was really warm woke up in the middle of the night to try and turn the heating down we couldn't . Can't open the windows either, my partner was sick because it was that warm.. That's my only bad pint about this hotel.
Review 45:Just got back from spending one night at this hotel, hotel is lovely very cosy feel to it.. Food is gorgeous we had tea and breakfast, staff made a real effort to make you feel comfortable, all in all really nice stay.
Review 46:Room wasn't big enough because I booked superior but I had normal size room. Next thing car park too small, wasn't space so I blocked 2 cars. Way to car park about 5 min because I have to pass 4 road lights
Review 47:Lovely breakfast, very nice staff.
Review 48:We booked last minute and didn't expect too much but every thing was lovely, comfortable and spotless clean. Breakfast was delicious, room nicely decorated and cozy. We wished we stayed longer.
Review 49:NO BAD EXPERIENCES
Review 50:Ideal for my purpose as it is close to the railway station. Also it has a bar and excellent comfort. A very beautiful old building of the type I love.
Review 51:Our room was on the 2nd floor right on the main junction so could hear every car going past. Didn't have a great sleep because of this
Review 52:Food was fantastic, bar had a nice chilled atmosphere, staff were very nice, room had everything we needed
Review 53:Only downside that it wasn't as close as the description says to Windermere. It was around 45 minutes by car.
Review 54:Hotel was lovely and furnished beautifully
Review 55:No circulation of air, eg... not being able to open a window. The car park being over the other side of 4 busy roads.
Review 56:The bar was very inviting. The breakfast was very good & there was a lot of choice.
Review 57:One problem. Couldn't see to do hair and make up as light very dim near mirror but didn't spoil my stay was fab
Review 58:Large comfortable room great location too.
Review 59:the carpark is across the road as i was travelling with my mother who has a walking stick if i had know i would not have booked this hotel
Review 60:it was clean and comfortable
Review 61:Had a very attractive room but the windows were very high.About 12 ft.Felt a bit claustrophobic as Ido like to open a window .Otherwise excellent overnight stay.
Review 62:Pleasant staff.Immaculate room,lovely bathroom.Good breakfast.
Review 63:Nothing
Review 64:Absolutely beautiful hotel very classy, the room was amazing the bathroom was beautiful, the breakfast was really nice to plenty to choose from will definitely be going back
Review 65:Breakfast buffet choice was very limited. The cooked breakfast took 50 minutes to arrive. The staff whilst polite, didn't really care that we sat there waiting to give our order. Loved the tampon and panty pad display in reception. Only in Barrow I guess.
Review 66:Clean modern room with the usual facilities.
Review 67:I and my friends booked this hotel a couple of weeks ago. We'd toldthe hotel that we would check in around 12-1am. We were running a bitlate because of the bad traffic. Around 10pm I called the hotel to alertthem we would be 15-20 minutes late but the line was engaged. I kepttrying and line was always busy. We arrived at the hotel around 1:20am(20 minutes late), the hotel door was shut. This is a 24 hour hotel!!!!!Unbelievable they shut the hotel door. We knocked the door, pressed thebuzzer, called the reception (line was busy), called night shift managermobile (his number did not exist, amazing huh). None of the hotel staffanswered until a pizza delivery man came in and someone in the hotelfinally opened the door! We were left outside the hotel for 15 minutesin the mid night and we had a kid with us. I am sure that the hotelstaff were having a party and they made the phone off the hookdeliberately(that is why the line was always busy). When we checked in,the receptionist even did not apologise for this. What a amaszngservice!!! I complained the bad service. Finally the manager apologised. But, I would never ever book this hotel again. It is such a badexperience. We felt desperate when we left outside the hotel around 1ammid night with a kid with us.
Review 68:Nothing honestly.
Review 69:Breakfast wasn't that great but it was a good deal having it included in the price.
Review 70:Stayed in an executive suite-great size with a bath and a shower.
Review 71:The hotel is beautiful, with a fabulous lift (think Willy Wonka and the Chocolate factory) The staff are welcoming and friendly. In fact the manager went over and above any possible service to ensure we arrived in time for a local wedding by driving us himself....thank you again. The bar has a wide selection of Malts for a whisky lover and the wine not half bad either!!! Breakfast was lovely, beds so comfy!!! Rooms clean and unique in style. we had the top floor with a lovely room with exposed beams. Would highly definitely recommend this hotel and would stay again.
Review 72:The shower was too hot and you couldnt turn it down, we reported this but due to the hotel being full we could not use another shower.
Review 73:Everything wes great thanks, breakfast was fab.
Review 74:Our room backed onto a main road and we were woken by traffic
Review 75:Excellent hotel close to the town. Staff were friendly and efficient . Excellent value for money
Review 76:Room was chlostrophobic and smelled very damp, no windows to open, the bed was broken on one side which meant my partner had to sleep on my side and i was in the chair ! Really not a nice room very musty smelling ! This was a taster weekend but will not be booking again
Review 77:Staff were pleasant thank god for airconditioning
Review 78:during our evening meal with other guests we had a problem before eating --- I noticed a white sticky substance along the waistline . of my brand new special occasion top. Along the edge of the table there was w white glue like substance. We called the waitress Karen who looked surprised and said she had cleaned the table herself .I thought it might just be cream but when I pulled out along string it obviously was not.... Karen who was very pleasant at all times offered me a wet cloth ! I showed her the obvious result ---the table was encrusted with this substance and my new speclal top was ruined and I had nothing else to wear. I was very disappointed with the result ---we were kept at that table throughout the whole meal. It was such an awful evening with my brother and his wife who travel the world I was too upset to complain ! Since going to my sons house I have tried everything to clean the top ---but I was unsuccessful. I would appreciate a response
Review 79:bedroom was perfect and everything was catered for
Review 80:Staff were friendly and accommodating, the bar/breakfast areas were of a high standard, food was good quality and the bed was very comfortable. Free car parking was also a bonus
Review 81:The room and ensuite was beauitful, we loved the modern, clean decoration. We also loved how the Hotel kept the original features of the building but it didn't feel old fashioned. The best part of our stay was definitely the Staff. Every member of staff was very friendly and it was nice to have a giggle with them. They were still very professional and couldn't do enough for us to make our stay perfect.
Review 82:Not enough staff in the restaurant in the evening and not much available on the continental breakfast.
Review 83:Nice room and full of character. Bathroom was amazing!
Review 84:The comfort, cleanliness and value for money could not be better. Staff were also very friendly and helpful. We also liked the off street car parking facility.
Review 85:Staff at breakfast time were not very friendly, gave us toast 10 minutes before our breakfast even came by this time it was stone cold, asked politely for fresh toast waitress didn't say a word and took it, then when she brought our fresh toast she just slammed it on the table and walked away Manners don't cost a thing in my opinion!!
Review 86:Lovely decor, massive bathroom
Review 87:There was a very stroppy young waitress serving the evening meals making ot very obvious to the guests that she, for whatever reason, was unhappy. Made quite an uncomfortable atmosphere amongst the guests
Review 88:This booking was made as an anniversary gift for my parents and they said nothing but great things, from the comfort of the bed to the quality of the food.
Review 89:The room we had was extremely noisy on the 1st floor on a busy main road it was horrendous didn't sleep a wink and we had our 1 year old baby with us it was a nightmare
Review 90:How hot the room was. We had window open and fan on but still hot. There was no spare sheets to use instead of duvet.
Review 91:How close the hotel was from bars and restaurants.
Review 92:The hotel was in an excellent location for the town centre and a short drive to Walney Island. The room was immaculate and the breakfast was to die for.
Review 93:Not really but they only have Freeview television which could be enhanced with premier channels eg Sport.
Review 94:I have stayed at the Duke of Edinburgh before. It is conveniently placed near the station and the town centre. The facilities in the room were excellent with a modern shower and comfortable bed. The staff are friendly and helpful.
Review 95:A little disorganised; problem with our check-in; also booked a superior room and paid extra and couldn't see the difference with the standard rooms. Staff told us it was because it had a dvd player!!
Review 96:Great location, lovely rooms
Review 97:Not very warm for the time of year and a little breezy.
Review 98:As well as the excellent location for commuting even on foot, the town centre was a stroll away and only a few miles to the beaches.
Review 99:Location ... Although it's close driving to Ambleside and the safari zoo, the hotel has near enough nothing to do close by, meaning you're best arranging days out and going there simply to eat and sleep!
Review 100:Rooms were great, clean, beds especially comfy! The restaurant was lovely, great food and cocktails! Beautiful hotel!
Review 101:The only downside was that it was far too hot, we could not turn down the heating as it is controlled by the hotel, they had a fan in the room if you needed to use it. Suppose the heating would be great in the winter months.
Review 102:The food was lovely and plenty of it. Good size room, very comfortable. Friendly Staff.
Review 103:Fabulous room with lovely big bed and very nice en-suite. Staff friendly and cheery and excellent breakfasts. Parking not on site but certainly handy enough.
Review 104:lovely hotel room (103) but was to hot unable to change room temperature and no windows to open .
Review 105:Very lovely value for money hotel. Good lively bar area and good breakfast and food in the restaurant lovely. Would definitely stay there again.
Review 106:We paid for an executive double room but seeing other rooms ours seemed like a standard room rather than a executive.
Review 107:Hotel was lovely, area wasn't fantastic but the hotel made up for it, the volt was lovely and the meals where great.
Review 108:Barrow-in-Furness is so run down it's a shame as it could be a thriving holiday resort. The area seriously needs some TLC and a cash injection. Hotel: pillows too hard and more than 4 coat hangers needed in the room. The wash basin and tap were ok to look at but a normal one would be so much more functional.
Review 109:Very helpful friendly staff. Lovely choice of breakfast. Gorgeous building, full of character and history. Ideal base if you are visiting the Lakes by car
Review 110:The room was very warm and as the window only opened a little it was hard to sleep. Fair enough tho they had a fan..this was on constant when we were in the room. Barrow itself isn't great. We stayed thinking it's not that far from lakes (1hr to Windermere) so would probably still be a nice area...it's very run down if I put it nicely ha. Not one for moaning like but constant ambulance/police cars passing by late..this is something I expect from a city...all in all though this is not the hotels fault..just location.
Review 111:We had the superior double room..(200). We arrived early they allowed us to check in early (although I don't see why not if the room is ready). Spacious room, breakfast was nice, lovely shower and bathroom.
Review 112:It was a warm night and although the room included a fan, it REALLY needs air conditioning as the room was incredibly warm overnight (28 degrees). Apart from that, they made the room very accomodating for us.
Review 113:Excellent service, very helpful staff and good food.
Review 114:Room was a bit warm (24 C - OK, unusual for Barrow!). No air-con and opening the windows let in traffic noise.
Review 115:Staff, food, bar, location near station and less than a half hour walk to the docks.
Review 116:The hotel was quite warm throughout. Some air con would have been nice. However there was a fan in the room which helped.
Review 117:Staff and facilities were excellent and the food was delicious.
Review 118:Staff were all very helpful and friendly. Rooms a good size, bathrooms look newly refurbished with good size bath. The bed was very comfortable. Rooms are very clean with tea and coffee facilities. Booked the restaurant and food was good. I would definitely stay again if I was in the area. We visited south lakes zoo and it was only a 10 minute drive away.
Review 119:Hotel was out of character with the area. Pleasant hotel in very rundown industrial town. Nowhere else even reasonable to go for a drink letalone food (ended up having lunch in macdonalds). Felt mislead as hotelwas advertised as Lake District.
Review 120:Friendly staff. Nice bar and restaurant.
Review 121:Noise from traffic on front room. Didnt have meal in bar, told was busy and would need to wait, but didnt like the high bar stool style chairs and tables so found an Indian around the corner.
Review 122:Room good size, modern and comfortable, but road bit noisy with window open when room was hot. Breakfast good choice if dont want full English and was served quickly.
Review 123:Having to leave.
Review 124:Great location and the staff were very attentive and friendly. The food in the restaurant and bar was excellent. The room was spacious and the facilities are all you would need and more. Very friendly Hotel
Review 125:The room was very room a fan was not enough to keep room cool. Might have been better with a mini fridge in room
Review 126:Everything was spot on but beds not changed and the bed was very hard
Review 127:Very noisy at night, night club and things going on outside made it difficult to sleep. Wouldn't rate it an executive room. Quite standard.
Review 128:Nice and modern. Friendly staff.
Review 129:I didn't get any mushrooms with my breakfast
Review 130:It was a beatiful hotel. Room was large and beds very comfortable. Staff were friendly and very helpful.
Review 131:The breakfast was lovely one day but very dry the next day. Poor girl was on her own and rushed off her feet.
Review 132:The bar downstairs was very nice with a wide range of drinks and local beers
Review 133:When booking on line stipulated ground floor room because my wife had recently broke her foot & had crutches & moon boot. On arrival no ground floor room available at booked rate & had to pay extra for superior room on ground floor. Reason for mistake was blamed on booking agency. Parking was also across a busy road which is no fun with crutches.
Review 134:dust on top of most surfaces all around the hotel ie:- vanity lights and pictures and lamp shades even round reception wife hated the seagulls in the morning
Review 135:location of hotel was great for going into town
The Fine Print
