Reviews for Château Hôtel Grand Barrail
Review 1:An absolutely fantastic experience! Perfect in every way. Our stay here was the ultimate vineyard escape. Beautiful big rooms, perfectly decorated and clean. Welcoming staff who went that extra mile. A lovely spa to relax in and all that incredible wine. We never wanted to leave!
Review 2:Everything was completely faultless!
Review 3:Our room was superb - beautiful furnishings, impeccable linens, bathroom gorgeous, and we looked out across the vineyards! The Chateau and surroundings are a tranquil oasis and we hated to leave! The service throughout was superb and the breakfast buffet absolutely lavish and beautiful. We dined one night at the restaurant - spectacular food and service and I don't even need to mention the quality of the wines!
Review 4:the food was outstanding. but i would provide a little more variety, particulalry if you eat there 2 or 3 times over a stay.. have a couple of dishes on the menu that go the whole year. supplement with daily and seasonal.
Review 5:the staff were outstanding. nice and relaxed. keep it like this. Dont become stuffy. let the staff be relaxed with the guests
Review 6:Need taxi to get to the town centre that costs 20 EUR each. More meal choices could be given for room service.
Review 7:The room was very romantic and comfy. We can see the whole vineyard from our balcony which is awesome. The spa was nice too. The staff were extremely helpful and polite. They helped us book a wine tasting tour and a underground tour. I asked them to prepare a bunch of roses to give a surprise to my gf at dinner and it was very well done. I couldn't expect a better service from them. It was an unforgettable stay for us and we will definitely come back again!
Review 8:The food was not as good as expected and too expensive for what was served. The cheese board was well furnished but the portions doled out were tiny, I had to beg for more.
Review 9:The rooms were clean and well appointed.
Review 10:Spa service was wonderfully relaxing. Reception was attentive, polite, professional. Dinner was out of this world and the service perfect. The property is stunningly beautiful. Absolutely no complaints.
Review 11:The bar shut early for a hotel like this. We were told to use the limited minibar after 11pm
Review 12:The amazing service, nothing too much trouble. As well as the room, view, pool, food
Review 13:The hotel is listed as being located in St. Emilion, but it is actually halfway between St. Emilion and Limbourg. If you don't have a car, the nearest place to eat other than the hotel dining room is about a mile's walk away along a very busy road. We loved the food, but found it expensive to eat every meal there, especially breakfast at $24 Euro/person, when we simply wanted coffee and croissant.
Review 14:The hotel amenities and staff were first rate. It's a gorgeous place at a beautiful location.
Review 15:Nothing - but breakfast a little pricey at 19euro a head
Review 16:Beautiful hotel set in Saint Emilion vineyards, about 3km outside of the main town. Staff were excellent and arranged a private vinyard tour and wine tasting which was excellent.
Review 17:We had an issue with hot water which was quickly fixed and we were given a discount on one night's stay to compensate so no complaint there either. 6 euros for a small bottle of water from the minibar with no complimentary bottled water provided.
Review 18:An excellent hotel with friendly and helpful staff and with any little problems ironed out immediately. Super setting among the vines. Great spa and pool and very good food.
Review 19:Pleasant room (114) but very close to Reception. Impossible to use private hedged garden due to constant traffic and people arriving/ leaving noise.
Review 20:Very good restaurant though staff less attentive on second night!
Review 21:The food is exquisite but the menu could be more extensive; the chef offered us something off the menu as an alternative on our last night which was very thoughtful, but more choice throughout would be an advantage.
Review 22:Wonderful welcome - lovely, professional, warm discreet service; superb food, brilliant chef; beautiful terrace for outside dining; delightful characterful room in the tower; immaculately clean and fresh bathroom and linens; plenty of space around the pool and a beautiful three days all in all.
Review 23:Just a suggestion- perhaps indicate on your website that most maps(Google, gps, will not locate the hotel but will show the location as LaMarzelle. Explaining that this is the wine cellar next door and thatthis is the correct location for the hotel may help. I only realisedthis after looking at 2 maps and the website.
Review 24:I loved everything! I wish I could have stayed longer
Review 25:Most of the staff were amazing but one of the waiting staff seemed very grumpy and ignored our requests- we decided not to visit the restaurant again and this did spoil our stay
Review 26:The location is great and with the exception of one member of staff extremely helpful. The dinners are of michelin star quality
Review 27:Dinner menu should be varied more often Balcony permanently in the shade First room offered was noisy because of neighbouring wine producing building Hotel directions not adequate Service on terrace poor and pool area non existent Not enough clothes hangers
Review 28:Pleasant polite staff Excellent food with fantastic sunset views over vineyards while eating Beautiful gardens Good car park
Review 29:Smoking in terrace restaurant at table next to us, ashtray provided Air con not working but "technician" who came to room insisted it was when it wasn't Fire alarm went off at 0200 and again at 0230 No staff around and when we rang reception at 0245 were told it was a false alarm Safe and shaving mirror light not working Minor detail but cobwebs on bedside lamps
Review 30:Excellent room Beautiful setting
Review 31:Breakfast on the expensive side (€24 per person) given small selection. WiFi connection was quite slow.
Review 32:Lovely Chateaux in close proximity to St Emilion. Very friendly and helpful staff who recommended us some of the best vineyards and restaurants. The restaurant was best in class, we dinner twice there. Bicycle hire made a big difference.
Review 33:The staff are very polite and friendly. The restaurant is lovely with beautiful windows and lighting. The food is very good too. The spa is very good also.
Review 34:It's a little far out of town... taxis are €20 each way!
Review 35:Gorgeous chateau near town of St. Emilion. Beautiful bedrooms and restaurant. Relaxing pool area. Highly recommend staying.
Review 36:The only thing that we felt let the hotel down was the breakfast. There was enough choice but a lot of items were running out and were not replenished quickly enough meaning a lot of hanging around or asking members of staff. The tea and coffee was self service as well which for a hotel of this standard I would expect table service for. It wasn't even quicker to make your own tea/coffee as you had to wait for the kettle to boil and join a queue - not the most relaxing of breakfasts especially for the price.
Review 37:Apart from the breakfast the hotel was wonderful. The rooms were beautiful and luxurious and the facilities were great. We used the gym, the pool and the jacuzzi whilst there and these were a great addition. The hotel is in easy reach of St Emilion town although you may need a car to get there. The hotel also hires bikes and we used these to go on a short bike ride along the small country roads nearby and through the vineyards. The dinner in the evening was delicious and the set menus quite reasonable. We sat outside and the views over the vineyards was beautiful. We would certainly recommend a visit.
Review 38:Breakfast service was not as good as for other meals. Buffet was closed at 10.30 on the dot which was not good for late breakfast arrivals.
Review 39:Situation of hotel and excellent concierge staff. Excellent dinner.
Review 40:We were only here one night.
Review 41:The location was perfect for relaxation as well as visiting the area and the wineries. The room was phenomenally appointed and very comfortable. The restaurant space outside, as well as inside, was most inviting and romantic.
Review 42:Restaurant quite expensive.
Review 43:Lovely accommodation with nice balcony to use in the evening. Bikes available to hire. Staff all very helpful. Approximately a quick 50 minute walk into St Emilion.
Review 44:The new addition (which looks like a Travel Lodge) has been built in front of the old chateau which is a crime. All "Superior" rooms are in the new addition, and the interiors were disappointing for the price (also looked like Travel Lodge, particularly the bathroom.) I don't mind Travel Lodge, I just want to be charged accordingly. Breakfast is 24 euros for a big buffet, when all I wanted was coffee and a croissant. The whole thing seemed very pricey.
Review 45:Staff were lovely, welcoming, did everything they could to assist wherever possible. Fluent English and French.
Review 46:It was perhaps unseasonably cold and the heat had been turned off because of the time of year. It was still cold in my room and not having heat available when it is cold does not fit with my idea of a very nice hotel. Breakfast was nice but over priced.
Review 47:Our rooms were freezing the first night. We were told the heating was turned off. The second night the heaters in the bathroom worked which was nice.
Review 48:Friendly staff, excellent food, loved bike riding into St. Emilion.
Review 49:They did not give us the room we booked (downgrade), breakfast was skipped because of 24 p.p. extra on room rate (which was rather high). The diner menu was suddenly fixed menu (I really hate that), restaurant staff was chaotic, slow and unattending. So we skipped diner here and needed to go to St. Emilion for something to eat on a too late time. They ran out of tea bags on second day... no cork screwer (was this a wine area or not) available on the room. This was really no value for money. 4*?, no way. Toilet smelled like some sort of a sewer and so did the corridors (fish).
Review 50:Reception staff helpful and possibility of renting bikes. View on vineyard.
Review 51:People are very nice the chateau is beautiful inside with stained glass windows and the food is excellent. Location is very good in the hart of StEmilion and Pomerol.
Review 52:The hotel was beautiful, the setting was gorgeous, the jacuzzi spa has a gorgeous view for the sunset and we had a very overindulgent 8 course meal in the restaurant.
Review 53:the breakfast was very average. it could have been better. the evening food was adequate but again could have been better. there should be an information folder in the room giving information about the hotel as well as places to visit, instead there are a few sight seeing pamphlets in the foyer
Review 54:most of the staff were wonderful. the room was fairly large, very clean and inviting. the location was excellent and interesting
Review 55:The chateau is simply lovely. We enjoyed a walk around the grounds and the facility, then shared some wine on the back terrace. A perfect spot to stay while visiting St. Emilion 10 minutes away. The stained glass dining room is gorgeous and the food excellent. Take the tours available in the fascinating village.
Review 56:Spa and pool facilities very disappointing. Lacking a quality feel. Poorservice and facilities.
Review 57:Good for touring the vineyards and visiting St Emilion. Room wasspacious if lacking in character. Restaurant and breakfast nothingspecial and certainly over-priced. Better can be had more economicallyin St Emilion.
Review 58:A very well run small luxury hotel. Facilities were elegant, the food was extrermely good and the staff provided excellent service all round. The Spa was a big plus with good facilities and well trained staff.
Review 59:Internet quality was only fair
Review 60:The property was very well located and nicely maintained. The staff was always very helpful and ready to assist. The food and service were what you would expect at a top quality hotel. The hotel facilities were easily accessible and availability was good. The hotel's location near Saint Emilion was Abigail plus as was its proximity to other attractions and nearby vineyards.
Review 61:The pool and the gym did not open early in the morning. It should be open by 7 or even 8 but was usually open later.
Review 62:The staff was affable and the grounds were beautiful
Review 63:The wi-fi was very unreliable and sometimes not available all day, The speed bumps in the drive to the hotel were ferocious and damaged our car.
Review 64:We enjoyed the hotel very much. It is a wonderful sight in a charming location. Our room was very comfortable and the facilities were top class. We particularly enjoyed the bicycles to explore locally. Breakfasts were a delight. Set menu dinners were also delicious.
Review 65:Nothing
Review 66:The food at the restaurant was marvellous. The service from the reception was very good. The location is splendid, close to St Emilion and all the vineyards around. The room was large and delicate. We had some fantastic days at the hotel and will come back for sure, our favourite hotel so far.
Review 67:it would have been helpful to have more information about the local area and places to visit.
Review 68:wonderful tasting menu with local wines of a high calibre in a beautiful setting of the dining room with its stained glass windows.
Review 69:- incredible chateau! Looks like a dream come true - very good restaurant. Try its own wine - staff was very professional -everything was fantastic at this place
Review 70:The pool wasnt very inviting, it was nice but compared to the rest of the hotel it was very blah.
Review 71:The decor the staff and the food were perfect. The rooms are also very beautiful. Would love to come back!
Review 72:The fact you paid an incredible amount for the room and they proceeded to make you pay incredible amounts for everything else- like bike rentals, coffee, breakfast, etc They were far from town and their restaurant was over priced, but if you wanted to travel anywhere else for a meal - you had to pay to be driven.
Review 73:I liked the fact they had bikes, the turn down service and the rooms
Review 74:restaurant service was overall good but patchy/slow at times
Review 75:restaurant food, decor and menu all great location is perfect, scenery is breathtaking reception staff very helpful with requests
Review 76:While the restaurant has potential, the food is nice, is every effortnullified by the choices of wine served. The sommelier likes tanine-richstrong red wines, so he serves it with every course, destroying thetaste of the food. When I made a remark about this, I got the same"matching" white wine for five courses. Drinks ordered but notserved did appear on the bill. The code of the wifi changed about twotimes a day, so you have to wait in line at the reception twice a day tocontinue the use of the internet. Why bothering your guests that much?
Review 77:Nice beds
Review 78:Service not good enough - lacked the attention to detail and promptness you expect in this calibre of hotel on the bar and restaurant: looked under staffed.
Review 79:Beautiful building and room (in main chateau) Delicious food Nice pool
Review 80:Unbelievable grounds and facilities. Staff courteous and friendly - go above and beyond to take care of you. Food and wine list amazing. Location even better than advertised.
