Reviews for Les Chambres de l'Abbaye

Review 1:The rooms are small and very sparsely equipped, wi-fi very poor, no TV and beds of poor quality. Bathrooms are not en-suite but shared and across the corridor and a bit smelly and cold. All in all this is not really a hotel, more like an up market youth hostel.

Review 2:Amazing building, very historic and gives you a sense of what it must have been like to been living here as a nun in times past.

Review 3:The showers and facilities are not en-suite and are basic. They are shared facilities but plentiful so no problems with queueing ever. They are fine though so do not be put off by that remark, just be aware. Fine for me but I would not take my wife! My second stay and I would certanly stay again when I come to Saintes.

Review 4:The old Abbey provides a fantastic very different setting.

Review 5:I can't think of anything negative to say.

Review 6:A feeling of stepping back in time but with moderm ameneties in a beautiful historic setting and all within walking distance of the river and restaurants. I also walked to the theatre and the cathedral along cobbled alleys. Although the room was basic, it had a comfortable bed, table and two dining chairs, tea and coffee facilities and a bottle of water supplied each day. I also had a room with an en-suite. The free wi-fi performed perfectly. During my 2 weeks tour I stayed in 6 hotels and this was easily my favourite.

Review 7:As an 'oldie' it might have been easier if we had a loo ensuite as opposed to a few steps down the corridor - but we knew what we were not getting before we booked, b this night put people off who should have more courage!

Review 8:Staying in a most unusual place, full of history and character and charm. We were comfortable and warm, enjoyed the peace, and an excellent meal in an Italian restaurant 5 minutes walk away

Review 9:Nothing, just a little more basic than we expected. Fine for a quick stop

Review 10:Location good. Very basic but clean. Interesting experience staying in the actual abbey. Free parking outside. Efficient door security system.

Review 11:Booked well in advance requesting a room with a loo. Staff said they had none on arrival. I should have been informed at point of booking so we would have stayed somehere else.

Review 12:History of building

Review 13:The owners were really friendly and helpful - they offered to (and did) make a table reservation for us in a local restaurant they had recommended. The breakfast was excellent.

Review 14:no soap dispensers in bathroom, which is essential in shared bathrooms. Skimpy shower curtains, which lead to wet floors.

Review 15:The room and its simplicity. The coolness of the room on a baking hot day.

Review 16:Breakfast was very poor. 8,90 euros per person is robbery. There was basically nothing to choose from, so we

Review 17:Rooms are with stone walls and ceilings, beautiful. Vintage furniture, extra blankets and towels.

Review 18:Great room. very clean and tidy. did not mind not being en suite. good breakfast. loved the place.

Review 19:Loved the building. middle of an amazing town. plan to go back to see more as soon as possible.

Review 20:Unpretentious, graceful and charming, the Abbaye aux Dames is steeped in history. We loved the vaulted ceilings, which lent a simple grandeur to corridors and rooms. The rooms are simple but comfortable. A special treat was the choir practising in the early evening; their beautiful music floated through the open window. The fact that the abbey now contains a conservatorium of music gives it a special atmosphere. The staff are very helpful; breakfast is simple but adequate. There are plenty of bathrooms for the rooms that don't have them ensuite. Highly recommended.

Review 21:Loved everything

Review 22:Staying in an Abbey is a great experience. It was comfortable, spacious and very clean. Highly recommend you do the audio tour of the whole area as it gives you a great insight into the history of the Abbey. A shared bathroom was no problem, plenty of bathrooms all very clean

Review 23:Possibly the bathrooms could be upgraded.

Review 24:It is a most unusual place to stay. A beautiful building and location. Convenient for the town. Good free parking at the rear of the abbey.

Review 25:Don't let the fact that your room is not en-suite put you off, this is a superb historical monument, and it was a pleasure to be allowed to overnight here.

Review 26:Nothing really except I was a bit unsure of sharing a bathroom but they were clean and near to room. Would definitely stay again..

Review 27:Beautiful building with comfortable accommodation in a quiet location yet near to the town of Saintes. If you want to experience staying within beautiful architecture then this is for you.

Review 28:Uncomfortable bed. Noise from next door room. Tiny shower room.

Review 29:The ambience, the breakfast, the beautiful building.

Review 30:Lack of selection of nearby choices for food

Review 31:An amazing building but better suited to a younger clientel who dont need lifts

Review 32:Beautiful quiet building, comfortable bed, in lovely Saintes.

Review 33:Bathroom facilities were somewhat tired.

Review 34:A beautiful and tranquil setting in a historic, restored abbey

Review 35:Nothing

Review 36:Loved the place itself !

Review 37:Bed was a bit lumpy.

Review 38:Great old atmospheric building. We had en suite which was good. Good continental breakfast.

Review 39:No toilet in or near room!

Review 40:Location

Review 41:The shared toilets in the corridor

Review 42:The room was big and proper

Review 43:Chambres very clean and the ambience was quiet.

Review 44:Old historical building, primitive conditions.

Review 45:We paid for an ensuite but ended up using the other bathrooms as our shower flooded everywhere.

Review 46:Easy access tu the town.

Review 47:The old buildings

Review 48:Unusual and interesting location

Review 49:interesting experience

Review 50:Magic setting. One for the story books.

Review 51:bit hard to find initially

Review 52:handy to town, buildings and grounds are lovely

Review 53:Bathroom facilities a little tired

Review 54:Location; building

Review 55:Most rooms don't have own bathrooms, undestandable in this old building.

Review 56:Location, Abbaye de Dames, thick stone walls and vaulted brick ceilings.

Review 57:Nothing.

Review 58:Staying in a beautiful abbey with wonderful features, comfortable room and within easy distance to centre of Saintes.

Review 59:the bed was small and hard, and the shower was just possible due to size.

Review 60:wonderfully restored and such an original idea

Review 61:The breakfast is good but could be more varied.

Review 62:Very original building and rooms and excelent atmosphere. Very clean.

Review 63:Water in the showers way to hot, no soap in the toilets.

Review 64:Location, and history

Review 65:The coffee at breakfast! And the fact that I couldn't get an en suite room.

Review 66:The location.

Review 67:Size of room, it really was a cell. Ensuite v small. Given key at shop, left to find room in main building. Felt more like an up market youth hostel than a hotel. Had wanted to try this place since a previous visit to Saintes, and having satisfied my curiosity, I will not be returning. I feel there is more comfort to be had at a lower price elsewhere.

Review 68:Historic building, v central. Architecture v interesting. Kettle, rare in French hotels!

Review 69:Very difficult to find and access our room - we recommend the staff take guests there initially. Clues for other travelers: 1. The entrance with the keypad is in the corner on the right BEFORE the archway 2. The rooms are up one floor, only breakfast is downstairs 3. The door at the top of the steps requires your keycard to open and sometimes requires multiple attempts 4. The keycard only works with the room number up 5. There are light switches for the long corridors if needed Bed was a little firm.

Review 70:Very atmospheric in a lovely building and setting. Friendly staff. We seemed to have the entire floor to ourselves. Room was spacious, well equipped, warm, quiet and comfortable.

Review 71:We thought the breakfast was a little meagre for the price and they had run out of croissants and bread when we got there which was disappointing.

Review 72:The abbey was amazing, so beautiful. The rooms were fantastic with all the vaulted ceilings. Good location within easy walking distance of the town. We will be coming back for sure.

Review 73:The fact that it doesn't have its own dedicated reception ; it is a general one for the whole complex ( conservatoire, school etc) and operates limited hours. There was a certain take it or leave it attitude to the lady we dealt with. She was useless at restaurant recommendations; the one she mentioned next door was closed for renovations ; she had no others when we pointed it out. As the place is only B & B this is something everyone will want to know. We were the only ones staying and walking back after our dinner into the vast place was surreal. The codes and keys make it seem like a prison. If we had had a problem there were no phones in the room. We went to breakfast which was laid out for us- no one around at all. Somewhat like a gothic novel. If there had been a number staying, I imagine the wide echoing tiled corridor which runs down the middle of the line of 38 rooms would be noisy.

Review 74:A remarkable venue; very quiet and the buildings are beautiful. Generous public parking outside. Kettle in room plus tea and coffee -sadly no milk.

Review 75:Reception closed at 18.00. Caretaker did not speak English, no signs regarding hotel or reception, we had no idea if we were in the right place. Toilets and showers were at least 20 meters from our room and they were dirty.

Review 76:Afternoon sun forced curtains to be closed and room to be stuffy.

Review 77:The historic building and easy access to centre of Saintes. Very helpful "housekeeper".

Review 78:The shower would not stay up which is OK for those who may be vertically challenged....I am not! Apart from that small issue, 10 out of 10!

Review 79:We were amazed that we would really be staying in such a fine building! All very clean, friendly staff and very easy access to the town and surrounding countryside. Easy parking.

Review 80:Old and poor part of Sainte. Most restaurants on other side of river but good local bakery and coffee shop

Review 81:interesting to be inside an old abbey. Basic but very clean and cosy. Lucky to have a concert that night in the Cathedral. Very special.

Review 82:the tiny shower, the smallest and most difficult yet to try and shower in...almost impossible.

Review 83:the history of the buildings, the shape of the roof and the setting of the abbeye.

Review 84:bathroom facilities in need of better maintenance

Review 85:being in an historic facility, close to sights. VERY quiet and more than adequate for a short overnight stay....very good value.

Review 86:A little difficult to get to and hard to find, but worth the effort.

Review 87:This is a great idea in a unbelievable Abbey. It is very unique in that it is a historical building that is not specifically operated for lodging. It is more a historical site you can stay in, at a ridiculous price. It is very clean and quiet, a place to let any stress just melt away.

Review 88:No private facilities - meeting people at night and early morning on the way to the lavatory!

Review 89:The history of the building and the interesting cells even though basic.

Review 90:Provide a simple facilities map of which door is the front entrance onbooking. I spent a while hunting for which door was the one to theaccommodation and luckily a kind chap pointed to the door. Its notobviously the accommodation entrance. Some of the shower rooms had broken shower head attachments on the wall so you had to hand hold these - same in several of the facilities that were left open for us. The second day more doors to other facilities were left open so I could find one which had a proper shower. Not a serious issue but they still had broken shower poles on the wall which does not give the best impression. Fix these are you are back to a winner in terms of value. You may also have a health and safety issue with the very hot water temperature and very sensitive hot/cold taps. With children this could be an issue as the hot water was very very hot. I'd put a note up telling people to be careful as it certainly was very hot (on a positive it was always hot which is a brilliant change) Hot drinks machine was not functioning properly on our second morning (no milk). Would be nice if some instructions were left in both French and English regarding self service breakfast. Also a note on booking on what to do with your door keys on leaving would be nice - maybe a clearly marked post box to return keys would be a good idea ? Apart from the first morning we met no staff - nice and quiet - but would be nice to meet someone to ask advice about facilities or have a room book of information etc. We arrived very late and went to a Vietnamese restaurant top of Cours National called GIA BAO. Keep away worst food we have ever eaten and very expensive. Cold, we complained and they insisted we pay for the full price even though we barely had a starter. Dreadful service.

Review 91:Lovely location and architecture. Plenty of parking. Within a short walkof restaurants, park, river and old quarter.Very clean rooms and very clean wash/look/shower facilities. The whole place was spotless. Plenty of towels, bedding and blankets. Breakfast was very nice, simple but fresh and tasty and did the job. Nice and quiet. Perfect location. I would stay again for sure ! Saintes is a lovely town with some stunning buildings and history. Everyone we met was very friendly.

Review 92:The rooms they were like prison cell

Review 93:no wi fi poor signage

Review 94:good parking historic building and surroundings peaceful

Review 95:great atmosphere within the abbey

Review 96:It's difficult to find, the place and the rooms. There is not staff when arriving late.

Review 97:Beautiful abbey, clean and quiet

Review 98:Would have been better with en-suite attached to rooms but the shared bathrooms were fine

Review 99:Comfortable and quiet and no hassle
