Reviews for Hornsbury Mill

Review 1:Internet connection is slow.

Review 2:A lovely quaint hotel in an old working water mill with a stream running through the garden and peacocks and peahens and geese in the garden. Own bar and gourmet restaurant on site.

Review 3:The place has character but the rooms are looking really tired, towels frayed, curtains and furnishings long passed there best.

Review 4:The location is lovely and the staff really nice and attentive and there is plenty of character.

Review 5:The fish-dish at dinner was poor, covered in thick batter which concealed the small portion of fish inside. If you are going to include a fish option on your dinner menu, it has to be pretty good, or best not to offer it at all. The reading lights above the bed in room 3 didn't work, making reading impossible. These should have been checked.

Review 6:Friendly, co-operative staff, excellent, full- english breakfast, with plenty of other choices & a first-class dessert at dinner the night before

Review 7:It was quite a trek to our room which was on the second floor at the far end of the building, and the TV could have done with being bigger as it was difficult to see from the bed.

Review 8:The venue is stunning and the staff were all very friendly and attentive.

Review 9:The mattress was quite hard and not very comfortable. We both had backache after the second night.

Review 10:The location, the friendly staff and the restaurant where we had our evening meal.

Review 11:It would have been nice to have a shower that you could stand up in and the bed was a bit creaky.

Review 12:The staff were friendly and helpful. The food was delicious and the setting was beautiful.

Review 13:Dinner menu remained same with limited specials but quality and presentation of dishes good.

Review 14:My room was well appointed and designed keeping features of old mill.

Review 15:Picturesque building and location - extensive grounds around lake and stream with pretty bridges, gazebo and peacocks. Romantically decorated dining room in blue and gold complete with candles and waterwheel. Excellent menu, tasty food and friendly and helpful service. Comfortable, attractive and well-appointed bedroom.

Review 16:Tired comment relates to light bulbs not working in breakfast area. Suggests lack of desire to keep everything up to scratch. I was disappointed by the simple lack of decent bread for toast at breakfast. Same price for cooked breakfast or cereal and toast, but only choice was white sliced or brown sliced. Pretty poor considering the wide availability of good bread.

Review 17:Nothing

Review 18:Food well prepared and good choices Location in a quiet location Pleasant atmosphere Helpful and friendly staff Interesting features around hotel, including the ducks!

Review 19:Really sad to say the experience could have been improved greatly if Room cleanliness improved- dead flies, other peoples hair in bathroom after cleaning, dust/ fibres/ blonde hair on bedroom carpet, pet excretement on the breakfast patio for 3 days we were there , tired brown stained carpets in landing and bedroom that we frequented. Twin bed -one sagged in the middle so i had a broken sleep & got back ache but didnt have the heart to complain for fear of coming across as a moaner as had already asked for to have the flies cleaned away and to fix the freeview TV ( which the cook did eventually), sleep additionally disturbed by delivery van arriving at 5.30 and left engine running under bedroom window. DVD didn't work.

Review 20:Decent breakfast, really friendly appeared to be decent staff, polite, good location for travel, warm rooms, access to freeview, peacocks milling about which was lovely to see. Well stocked tea tray.

Review 21:The reception area and some of the common areas on the ground floor look rather in need of smartening up.

Review 22:The bedroom and bathroom were lovely (four poster bed), dinner in the restaurant was very good. Emma , front of house and Emily our waitress couldn't have made us more welcome ! Beautiful building and grounds

Review 23:The couple that we were with had difficulties as one of them was a semi invalid and due to the mix up with the booking were put into a room on the third floor which was not good.

Review 24:The general surroundings were very good. Bedroom excellent, and en- suite very good

Review 25:Food needs improving, breakfast needs better quality eggs not fresh and the use of cheap and nasty fried sausages not good.

Review 26:Relaxed friendly atmosphere ... great food!

Review 61:Location grounds staff

Review 62:Out of the way, lovely setting and space to relax and take in the countryside. Charming bedroom and dinning area.

Review 63:The room, the food and the Ducks!!

Review 64:Everything. Perfect stay in a beautiful location. Attentive and friendly staff, excellent food and good service.

Review 65:As a sole traveller I arrived at 3.45 on a very wet day. Five ladies were having afternoon tea in the lounge (advertised on board as from 2.00 - 4.00 daily). I asked the receptionist if I could have tea as I was quite wet, tired and cold. I was refused as I hadn't booked. I was told to drive back to Chard where there may be a tea shop open! That evening I saw two people arrive who were asked, by a different receptionist, if they would like tea or coffee in the lounge as they were wet and tired!! So sad that my initial introduction to this very pleasant hotel was spoilt by an unhelpful jobsworth!!

Review 66:Beautiful grounds and stunning water mill shown behind glass wall in dining room. Friendly and helpful staff in dining room and large portions of well cooked food. The breakfasts were superb. A good stay spoilt by one person.

Review 67:A little difficulty in finding the location.

Review 68:The Staff were very welcoming and went out of their way to be helpful. The accommodation was very comfortable with old world charm in this beautiful, beamed converted Mill house which still has a water mill.

Review 69:Very cold bedroom and bathroom on arrival. Dark bedroom - only one bedside lamp. Decorations rather "tired".

Review 70:Ambiance Food Location Service

Review 71:Stayed for an evening on business, found it good value, comfortable and the food was fine, The highlight was the slightly bonkers staff and their tales of claimed local hauntings. Due to the weather couldn't make the most of the gardens but imagine it'll be quite lovely in the summer.

Review 72:reception/front/stairway entrance not that clean or inviting view at the back of the building from the bar and room could be made better

Review 73:overall appearance size of room traditional mill features on show gardens/pond very friendly staff

Review 74:Some things did need updating. It seemed a little tired and in need of a bit of TLC. The hotel's potential is tremendous - it is such a lovely building and great location. Also our bathroom was a good size, yet it had a rather cheap finish to it - tiny little shower tray and old fashioned sink and not enough shelving or space to put your toiletries. The receptionist (manager?) was extremely good but she seemed to be covering all bases, also working in the bar and restaurant and she was there late at night and first thing in the morning. Our biggest problem, though, was the flies. Our room was full of them and we had to get a can of fly spray from reception to kill them. There were dead flies all over the place when we got back from dinner. We would have liked to open the window to sleep but did not dare in case we let in more flies!

Review 75:This hotel could be absolutely amazing. It is located in a water mill and the wheel, which still turns, is a feature of the dining room. The staff are very efficient and friendly and it has a very good restaurant. The food is very good and they had gone to the trouble of sprinkling happy birthday confetti on the table as I had told them it was my daughters 21st birthday. The room was very comfortable with nice linens and lovely big white towels. Breakfast was good. Nothing too special but perfectly OK. I would consider staying here again but I must admit I would also look into other options.

Review 76:Unfortunately there was a wedding party staying that were overheard to say they wanted a different location but felt the Mill was the second choice. They were uncomfortable with first as their tattoos had an adverse reception with the first. This is not the hotels fault we understand and would not put us from visiting again.

Review 77:Hornsbury Mill is a place we have stayed at before. It was a delight to find it just as we remembered. The staff are friendly and very helpful. The food is exquisite and and the hotel its self is welcoming and beautiful. We returned for our Wedding anniversary.

Review 78:Excellent food with a good choice, pretty gardens and setting. Clean and tidy room, with good facilities. Excellent staff throughout. We would certainly stay again.

Review 79:Although our room was described as being quiet by the receptionist, she forgot to mention that there was a beam going across the room at a very low level. Anyone going to the bathroom in the middle of the night would have had an accident.

Review 80:Staff were friendly and the hotel comfortable.

Review 81:Bed was a little small for Ed who is 6"4! Internet was extra

Review 82:Lovely grounds. Beautiful mill building. Comfy bar area. Good breakfast. Very helpful staff.

Review 83:I was running late to get to the hotel and the hotel rang me to say the restaurant was closing did I want any sandwiches making , I had alrenady eaten , nothing was a problem and the hotel is fantastic.

Review 84:Not a probl for us but if on top floor 2 flights of quite steep stairs.

Review 85:Lovely hotel on beautiful setting. Staff really friendly. Excellent breakfast .

Review 86:Only a small thing but we didn't like the shower fitting, it was fixed above where we would have prefered a wall fitting so our hair didn't get wet every time.

Review 87:Beautiful gardens, comfy beds, helpful and friendly staff, very good food.

Review 88:The reception area and staircase were a bit shabby.

Review 89:The bedroom and bathroom were comfortable, clean and well equipped. The restaurant and lounge areas were attractive and inviting. The building itself was interesting and the grounds beautiful.

Review 90:I am going to write to query the bill. The amount I was charged for the room was higher than the guaranteed rate from my online booking which I checked on my return. It may be that this can be addressed in response to this review.

Review 91:A very warm welcome. The staff were approachable and friendly, professional and attentive. It was a relaxed and homely atmosphere. The hotel was able to accommodate my wishes to have a room with a bath. Cuisine was very good. I intend to return.

Review 92:nothing I would have no hesitation in recomending hornsbury mill

Review 93:very friendly staff quietness/quaintness grounds were beautiful the peacocks were a nice feature the dining area had a very nice water wheel view

Review 94:Nothing at all!

Review 95:Friendly,attentive and helpful staff. We had a very warm welcome and nothing was too much trouble. All in all a delightful experience and we look forward to a return visit.

Review 96:Room was rather cold when we arrived but put radiator on then o.k.

Review 97:Beautiful setting and very quiet and peaceful. Close to Jurassic Coast and in lovely countryside. Dined very well and breakfast was good. Loved the four poster bed!

Review 98:Lots of peacocks in the grounds. Lovely to look at but noisy early in the morning. Not a major issue though.

Review 99:Really friendly staff. Good sized rooms and comfortable bed. Nice breakfast.

Review 100:Nothing at all

Review 101:Staff were incredible!! Was my other halves birthday and decorated the table. We're there if we needed a problem. I work within hotels and thought there service was excellent

Review 102:Whilst bathroom was very spacious with plenty of towels, the shower wasn't particularly good as far as water flow/temperature regulation was concerned. As toilet also took a while to refill this may just be related to being an older property in the country. For size of room it would be nice to have two "comfy" chairs, especially if staying longer as TV was quite small for size of room so needed to sit close to it rather than lounge on the bed to watch.

Review 103:Staff were very friendly, bed was comfortable, food very good, room spacious, bathroom spacious. All you really need for a one night stop-over.

Review 104:Breakfast no later than 9.00 am when we were on holiday; dull restaurant and public area environment; poor water force in the shower; lack of bathroom storage

Review 105:The grounds; mainly pleasant staff; good food

Review 106:food was very poor as hotel very quiet,so no excuse.Breakfast was also disappointing.

Review 107:the setting was very good, jn all fairness weather very poor could not take full advantage of setting.

Review 108:The rooms are a little tired in places, ie paint flaking of radiator and window latches looking tired but would it stop me from staying there answer NO, lovely location

Review 109:Staff were very nice

Review 110:The staff were very friendly and helpful. Our room was very clean and comfortable. We had dinner on Saturday evening which was really good. Breakfast was generous too. Hotel is a lovely building in beautiful surroundings

Review 111:For some reason my bathroom had no loo roll and no loo role holder. Thiswas sorted immediately but am a bit puzelled as to where the holder wentand why housekeeping did not notice.

Review 112:Good location and good value for me. Helpfull and friendly staff. Goodrestaurant and breakfast selection.

Review 113:The stay was too short.

Review 114:Superb setting in a quite self contained environment with a delightful Mill Pond, helpful and engaging staff, excellent food prepared to suit all tastes by a very talented Chef and the exceptionally caring owner / manager was always looking for ways to help your stay.

Review 115:There was nothing to dislike

Review 116:The whole experience was so fantastic that we would love to do it all over again. The staff were really friendly and helpful. The room was lovely. The restaurant had a greaty ambience, the food was first class. As our stay was a special occasion, we had ordered the special lobster meal in advance (24 hours notice required) and we would certainly recommend it, the lobster was delivered that morning, the presentation was excellent, the lobster was cooked to perfection and the sauces were delicious, we thought this meal was very good value as the cost included a bottle of sparkling wine. We would also recommend the home made ice creams. Breakfast was very good as well. Hornsbury Mill is a very relaxing and pretty place to stay, it it is an ideal base to explore Somerset/ East Devon

Review 117:couldn't get coffee after 11pm even thought we were residents and the bar was still open as one of our party didnt drink and wanted coffee

Review 118:Beautiful setting friendly staff unusual place lovely gardens rooms lovely and very clean breakfast really nice
