Reviews for Hotel Des Carmes - Rouen

Review 1:The room needs major updating. No door handle in bathroom so you couldn't close the door all the way. The mattress was uncomfortable.

Review 2:The location was great. The staff was really nice.

Review 3:there is no elevator and the doors of the rooms are very heavy.

Review 4:very kind and gentle staff who carried our baggage and guided my mother and kids into the room while my husband and I were finding parking lot. The hotel is very close to the notre dame cathedral which Claude Monet loved.

Review 5:Needs renowation and the doors don't keep the secrets in your room. Tomtom did not find the way to the door because the address given was not perfect.

Review 6:Small, cosy family owned hotel with paintings on the walls an even on our room ceiling. Painted by the madam. And the variety of georgious home made jams in the breakfast! Made by her.

Review 7:The hotel is very run down. The floor in our top floor room was lumpyand covered by super-thin carpeting, something like a layer of felt. The pillows and bed were rock hard. The "comforter" was alsosome sort of lumpy affair. Towels in the bathroom were so old, theywere practically grey. Granted this was a very inexpensive hotel, butwe stayed in others found on Booking.com which were similar in price, but incomparably nicer...and included breakfast. I don't believeBooking.com should keep this hotel on its website. It's the firsttime we've had such a bad experience with one of your hotels. Theowner was not particularly friendly, welcoming or helpful. Maybebecause we were American? Seemed like he couldn't care less abouthis hotel guests.

Review 8:I was originally going to say only the price, but can't even saythat, because we stayed at lovely Le Castel Guesthouse in Bayeux withits charming and welcoming owners for a similar price, which included amarvelous French breakfast to boot.

Review 9:Wifi not available in all rooms and 'patchy' at best. You need to be clear on your requirements at the time of booking...our bed configuration wasn't right and we had to take another room.

Review 10:Excellent location full of traditional French charm. Traditional style with some amusing features.

Review 11:As usual with this type of hotel, there is no lift, but I leave my heavier luggage in the car and just take up an overnight bag. Also I suppose there was no air-conditioning but this would only be a problem in summer heat waves.

Review 12:This is the sort of hotel I prefer when ferrying the car down to south-west France. I like an old style downtown French-style hotel which has been maintained sympathetically, near restaurants, in which everything works, and not too expensive or chi-chi. The French style breakfast was particularly good in terms of the freshness of the bread and croissants, the interesting jams, and excellent coffee at a good temperature.

Review 13:Being so central meant all the bars, restaurants and shops were on your doorstep. The downside to this bring it was incredibly noisy with passers by all night. Barely slept at all.

Review 14:Pretty hotel right in the heart of Rouen. Lovely breakfast.

Review 15:hotel is old and decor is shabby, would describe carpet as grubby. Interior should have a make over to justify the rates or else a rate reduction to match present condition.

Review 16:good central location and old world charm.

Review 17:No lift, we were on the 4th floor so lots of stairs. Decor was tired, it's not luxury. It's also difficult to park. There are some spaces on the street outside - but you're charged from 0900-1900 and there's a 2 hour limit. We were lucky to visit on a bank holiday when parking was free and streets were quiet, we found a spot and were able to leave the car there, otherwise we'd have struggled. There are pay car parks nearby though. If you do drive look up how to get there on steetmap, the hotel is not easy to find and it's in a one-way system.

Review 18:Great location, comfortable bed, reasonable sized room, free wifi

Review 19:This is our third stay at this hotel. The location is excellent for the historic old town, and it is run by friendly and informative English speaking staff. Large ensuite with bath - though no catch on toilet door! Large French windows overlooked the square outside with inexpensive pavement bar/restaurant opposite.Slightly worn decor and steep stairs to upper rooms but the overall sense of character and friendliness make this a favourite for us and our friends. Try the traditional breakfast including homemade jams served in the salon de the, or if sunny ouside on the pavement and watch the worls go by!

Review 20:Some noise during the night, due to the central position of the hotel.

Review 21:Friendness of the owners, and a good breakfast with special marmalade of apples calvados and local yogurt.

Review 22:The loo needed a good clean under the rim, otherwise the bathroom was spotless.

Review 23:Great position in a quiet square, peaceful for sleeping and central for exploring.

Review 24:Charming old-style hotel. Excellent room on first floor. Fascinating reception area with large desk, sitting area and breakfast tables. Decorated throughout with beautiful paintings. Very good breakfast. Fresh rolls and croissants with delicious jams.

Review 25:No elevator, distant parking. Decor is a bit dated, but that's more an issue of preference.

Review 26:Location, very friendly staff, large bathroom with complimentary toiletries

Review 27:Parking the car was a problem, as the streets are narrow. Multi storey was a good walk away. Very basic and needs decorating or freshening up.

Review 28:The hotel itself was central and a beautiful setting. Good price for a city centre. Staff where very helpful and friendly.

Review 29:Although the rooms are clean and fresh, the staircase is a bit smelly and needs freshening up. The walls are thin and you can hear everything that goes on in the room next door.

Review 30:Easy walk from the station. Close to everything in the town. Room was comfortable and clean. Breakfast was good.

Review 31:Small room requires repairmen.

Review 32:Perfect location to observe Rouen. 2 min walk to Rouen cathedral. Friendly personnel can give you a perfect recommendation for the nearby restaurants. The car parking is in the street (rather small) and in the shopping centre (3 min walk) at 14€ per day.

Review 33:- our room and parts of the lobby could do with some renovations and a new coat of paint

Review 34:- location, only a few steps from cathedral - lovely breakfast with great croissants and homemade jams

Review 35:I felt that the beds where small for most taller Europeans and I would have liked more pillows too. Similar to many French Hotels it lacked tea/ coffee making facilities.

Review 36:The charming location and quirky homelike feel of the hotel and the staff, some very nice artworks on display. Home made Jams with breakfast.

Review 37:The place was dark and dingy. Don't think the rooms had a cleaner . And wi fi problems. 1st room was just except able in size and 2nd room was like a prison cell. Just a tired town house

Review 38:The location was good right in centre

Review 39:The furnitures were essential. The room was shabby and the bathroom was too much tiny. Make sure the staff give you the pin code to enter the hotel by night, because they forgot it with us. Good-quality breakfast but not buffet.

Review 40:Excellent position and good price. The owner speak also Italian.

Review 41:A charming hotel in a great location.

Review 42:Central location, very quiet

Review 43:Excellent location, friendly owners. Made to feel very welcome.

Review 44:The room is darker and older than the photos indicate.

Review 45:Very friendly and attentive staff.

Review 46:The style of the Hotel. The Staff were so helpful

Review 47:Beautiful home made jam with breakfast and a very convenient hotel car park. Proprietor extremely accommodating.

Review 48:No lock on the ensuite door.

Review 49:Individual and quirky room. Very much the personal touch! The staff were all lovely and caring.

Review 50:Welcoming staff, quirky décor, central location.

Review 51:Nothing stood out as being poor.

Review 52:Very friendly staff, brilliant location, comfortable room, lovely breakfast.

Review 53:hard to find by car, just park in the car park and walk

Review 54:in the city

Review 55:Great location

Review 56:Noisy building site across the road.

Review 57:Nice staff. Good location.

Review 58:Parking in front of the hotel should be paid every 2 hours

Review 59:Very central location, pleasant room

Review 60:Street noise from revellers

Review 61:Friendly helpful hosts Parking available Central location Charming decor

Review 62:Wonderful French breakfast. The hotel is old and very quaint. Convenient location. The host was charming and most helpful.

Review 63:The service and the atmosphere

Review 64:Fantastic central location, helpful and friendly owner.

Review 65:Very friendly hosts Good location in city center Nice and clean rooms

Review 66:Location, the staff

Review 67:Bed was small.

Review 68:Location in city centre is perfect. Host was very nice and pointed out a very good restaurant. Breakfast outside in the sun was perfect.

Review 69:Location directions...took us almost 2 hours to find the place...but it was worth it! Eventually we parked nearby, where we thought the hotel was, and then walked to find the exact location. It was right there! And we also found parking in the tiny cul de sac right in front.

Review 70:Location was excellent! The owners were so very nice...we were even given a jar of homemade jam upon leaving!

Review 71:The only negative was no lift. Had to walk up 2 flights to room.

Review 72:Loved the charm of this very quaint hotel. The owner was most helpful. The breakfast was absolutely the best, fresh croissants, Normandy butter and yogurt. Delicious.

Review 73:no major dislikes - but I would just mention that my room was at the from of the building overlooking a pedestrianised street - absolutely no noise from any road traffic but on the 2 nights I stayed here I did hear noisy revellers on their way home early in the morning. But this in itself would not deter me staying here again.

Review 74:Stay of 2 nights. Very centrally located in historic city of Rouen - 3 minute walk to the Cathedral. Good local shopping in pedestrian friendly streets; traffic -free area. Room clean and comfortable with excellent bathroom facilities. The Manager was in personal attendance and he was welcoming and very helpful.

Review 75:Check in was supposed to be 1600 but the hotel was still closed at 1620, so not that convenient on a rainy November afternoon.

Review 76:Good location. Comfortable bed. Delicious breakfast with no packaged butter/commercial jam etc. Quirky, arty feel about the hotel - definitely not a chain hotel!

Review 77:The hotel is rather basic, the bedroom was small and the bed average. As with so many old buildings, we could hear most activities in the hotel from early in the morning. This wasn't too much of inconvenience for us but wouldn't be great for anyone trying to relax.

Review 78:The location was superb; close to the historical centre of Rouen as well as the best shops and a choice of places to eat & drink. The hotel itself is quaint, with some charm too.

Review 79:The room was very small, especially the bathroom and very dark as it was at the back of the hotel. Also no lift which was difficult with a suitcase. The room was a bit dated and could do with an update.

Review 80:The hotel owner was friendly and the breakfast nice with local produce. The location of the hotel was excellent for visiting central Rouen and within easy walking distance of the train station.

Review 81:The only downside, was that even on a Monday night, there were a lot of noisy pedestrians walking past well into the small hours

Review 82:The welcome was warm and efficient. The bedroom was spacious and well appointed and the bathroom was excellent The location was very central and all the key parts of Rouen are within easy walking distance. The breakfast included a first rate local farm yoghurt

Review 83:Bit run down, carpets need a clean, pillows were dreadful!! Shower was awkward to operate, towels were very old. But hey, it's a 2star hotel....

Review 84:It was a very quaint old fashioned hotel, but needs some tlc. Great location.

Review 85:We got a 4th floor room without elevator, although ordered long back and we are an elderly couple. No offer to help with lougage. The Hotel is closed between noon and 4:00 PM and there is no one to talk to, to open the door and let us in, so one can only wait. Same, everything is closed after 8:00 PM, so if one intends to arrive any later, must announce in advance

Review 86:Location

Review 87:We were told we would have a free breakfast on our return trip. Thiswas refused by the staff as the manager/owner had not passed thison to them even though we told them about it. Bedrooms at the front arevery noisy!

Review 88:This is a lovely old fashioned, simple and very well situated place tostay. It is clean and the facilities are ok.

Review 89:Wifi a bit ify

Review 90:It was a good comfortable hotel but what made it exceptional was the owner. Wonderful service, some great recommendations for meals- nothing was a problem

Review 91:I wasn't crazy about the stairs, but it was a lovely older buildingand no room for an elevater.

Review 92:I was impressed with the friendliness of the owner and how he spokeenglish because we don't speak french. He was helpful and catered toall our needs. The hotel was warm and welcoming and convenient forexploring the town and area.

Review 93:The warm welcome by the managers of the hotel who were very friendly and helpful up to and including directing us for local attractions and advising us on a nice restaurant for dinner. Lots of charm and a real home like atmosphere. The home made violet flavoured figs jam at breakfast... Still dreaming about it... :-) and the best bread ever, fresh from the local bakery.

Review 94:No elevator, hotel was closed when we arrived and couldnt check in.(Long lunch hours) But we did call them and they gave us the code todrop off our luggage.

Review 95:Location was perfect, we were able to walk from train station, toCathedrals and all of Joan of arc locations with no problem. Bathroom isamazing and good size.

Review 96:Very amenable host in very good location for a good price. Breakfast was better than expected. Being able to park a bonus.
