Reviews for Castle Vale House

Review 1:Most welcoming hostess and felt part of a family home. Nothing was too much trouble and they were very keen for constructive feedback from us to assist in making other peoples stay as enjoyable as possible.

Review 2:It was really bad weather and something kept rattling on the roof which was annoying after awhile.

Review 3:Loved watching the lights on the viaduct. Really friendly staff

Review 4:Breakfast order muddled items. Room cold when heating went off but fine when given heater.

Review 5:Homemade bread and preserves for breakfast. Jeanie the dog! Wonderful view from room. Lovely old house.

Review 6:Had to move rooms due to a noisy chimney (a problem recognised by the owners). No WiFi in replacement room though available elsewhere without a problem

Review 7:Very warm welcome. Hearty breakfast. Excellent view of the Royal Border Bridge

Review 8:you cant write 2 or 3 sentances about something that there was nothing at all wrong with!!(just managed it actually)

Review 9:the whole place was exellent especially the staff which was a lady called Jane who made everyone feel at home and also gave a few pointers as to what to see and where to eat. overall an exellant time was had by all, it was a shame it came to an end

Review 10:Not very clean smelled fusty, towels and bed linen smelled. Heating not working, breakfast fried to a crisp, toast was stale bread, butter had jam on it from previous day's use.

Review 11:Location

Review 12:The location and the view of the railway viaduct lit up at night. Jane was great. Breakfast was special with home-made bread and home-made yoghurt and really good bacon.

Review 13:Nothing was a problem

Review 14:Beautiful House Excellent Staff, so helpful and friendly Jane was the perfect host Beautiful views across the Tweed Breakfast was excellent Bedroom was comfortable with all I needed

Review 15:Ample private parking on site and the hotel is just a few steps away from the station and the the town walls. The owner is always available and very friendly and informative. Great full English breakfast too, in a classic English country house setting.

Review 16:Sadly the mattress was too soft and could feel some of the springs

Review 17:The views and location perfect friendliness of staff and lovely breakfast home made bread and jams also

Review 18:Very relaxing. Ideal location for getting out and about. Very friendly staff. Lovely spacious room. Homemade bread and preserves at breakfast an added bonus!

Review 19:The only issue I had with the property was in our room. No mirror over the bathroom sink. There is a window over the sink. In order to shave I had to walk back and forth between the sink and the mirror a few steps away. Awkward

Review 20:Location was great. Right next to the Train Station.

Review 21:Jane and Margaret were great. Wonderful location, could leave our car and just walk around town. Breakfast was delicious. Views from our room of the bridges could NOT have been better. Thanks for a great stay.

Review 22:A nice homely place in a big old house with a relaxed atmosphere. Good quality breakfast with plenty of choice. Homemade bread and jam was delicious! Excellent location for travelling by train. It was lovey to chat with other guests around the breakfast table.

Review 23:The location, so close to the iconic railway bridge and the river was really lovely, and it feels quite secluded, not like you are in a town, but it is only 15 minutes walk from the town centre. The view from the bedroom window looking down the river was beautiful. It was a lovely house, the family were very welcoming and the breakfasts were good (including homemade bread, yoghurt and jam).

Review 24:The room seemed to have very little attention after our first night, i.e. the bed was not made, no towels were replaced and the room and bathroom in general did not seem to have had much attention. The property is very outdated and could benefit from some updating. We were asked to pay for our 2 night stay as soon as we arrived which I wasn't happy with. There was no lounge for the guests to relax in the evening and the chairs in the bedroom were not very comfortable for relaxing in after a hard day sightseeing.

Review 25:The location was very good. The breakfast was good.

Review 26:Nothing

Review 27:Location. Nicely located near to the centre of the town and accessible along and through a park and river. Really beautiful setting and although access is via an incline it is possible to use the private access to the park and walk through the park and along the river bank to the centre of the town. Everything else with the accommodation was first class including the breakfast which consisted of many items that were locally sourced or actually made on site. Bread and jams were included in the 'home made' items available.

Review 28:Not really didn't like. ... just a little quiet on an eve. Very quiet actually

Review 29:The view was amazing. Surroundings lovely. Customer service wonderful

Review 30:Excellent location overlooking the Tweed and town. Many rooms with view. Walking distance to town. Homely atmosphere. Warm, friendly owner and staff. Friendly dog. Excellent breakfast.

Review 31:The staff are so lovely. Really friendly and welcoming. Breakfast was nice and as much or little as you wanted. Real value for money. We are definitely planning to return.

Review 32:I don't want to say I had a bad experience per se but...oh my God! Literally! The owners are super Christian which is great if you are in to that sort of thing. If you aren't you might be uncomfortable. They are plenty nice but don't seem to understand that when non-Christian folks look at a crucifix all they see is a horrific act of torture and murder. I for one, can't understand how anyone looks at that and feels warm and fuzzy regardless of their beliefs. How do you feel good and peaceful looking at that? Regardless, non-believers just see the act of execution which doesn't lend to sleep or pleasant meals. There is a particularly gory crucifix next to the dining room door and I was stuck sitting across from it. I had a difficult time trying to ignore it during my meal. If you like Christian scenes or just don't mind them you will be fine here. Otherwise, you might find your stay a bit disturbing. There are literally crucifixes and Christian art all over the walls. The wifi was practically non-existent in the room and really only worked in the downstairs hall. If you need wifi this is not the place for you.

Review 33:The view of the bridge from the room was really fantastic. The city has set up a light show that plays on the bridge at night and you have a front row seat. It was a very pleasant surprise. The breakfast was really great too. I enjoyed their home made bread and jams.

Review 34:Having to leave.

Review 35:A friendly, happy little hotel right next to Berwick station. Homely, comfortable rooms and a stunning location. Fab breakfast. This is how hotels should be in the UK. We loved staying there. Jane is a diamond.

Review 36:The bed was really uncomfortable and lumpy. You had to sit round one large table for breakfast without a choice.

Review 37:The breakfast food was superb. Location was excellent for the town and view.

Review 38:Apparently they don't accept children. However when I showed up with my 11-year old they did graciously accommodate us.

Review 39:Excellent location within walking distance of the train station.

Review 40:Nothing. Well, wifi did not work but it did not matter for just one night!

Review 41:Fantastic views over river, huge room. Lots of character. Great breakfast. Jane. Location.

Review 42:No breakfast choice. No fruit. All rather controlled! Bed very soft and not good for your back!!

Review 43:Great location beside beautiful walk into the centre.

Review 44:Great location next to the railway station, but tucked away so it didn't feel like a typical next-to-the-station accommodation. Setting overlooking the park and the magnificent brailway bridge. Great welcome and friendly staff.

Review 45:The lovely room with amazing views. The binoculars provided to enjoy the views. The feather pillows and duvet and comfortable bed. The friendly welcome and advice. The location.

Review 46:Our room had many photos and paintings hung throughout the room and as we are minimilists we found them a bit overwhelming. The saniflo toilet is also a bit noisy.

Review 47:The guest house is located next to the east coast main line station of Berwick upon Tweed however although you may see the trains crossing the bridge, depending on what room you have, you never hear them. The vista from our bedroom was of the bridge and riverside. The room was cosy though a little overbearing with photos and paintings. The greeting was warm and friendly and when we asked for decaf tea and coffee it was brought to our room immediately. Breakfast was standard fare but good. Would recommend.

Review 48:We were given a wonderful welcome, a beautiful room decked with pictures and elegant furniture, overlooking the Tweed. A short walk into town via the city walls. Very atmospheric passing the bridges acros the river and having the Stephenson railway viaduct to our right. Breakfast was excellent with home made yoghurt, jams and bread. The building is like a manor house which remains a family home. We loved it.

Review 49:We could not connect to the wifi (although we could have asked for assistance) but did not need it as the view from our window was mesmerising.

Review 50:Everything about the stay was fabulous, Margaret welcomes you into her home and we felt like part of the family. I was unsure about sitting around 1 table at breakfast but it was delightful. An absolutely charming stay and we can not wait to return.

Review 51:Could'nt stay longer. Would definately go back to stay.

Review 52:Everything including the staff and owners. The location is fantastic, with a lovely scenic walk into town.

Review 53:needs to be a wardrobe for people staying 3 days or more. heating in bathroom.

Review 54:the welcome, the views from room 1. the location to rail station. milk in fridge in hallway. breakfast.

Review 55:All the guests sit around 1 big table for breakfast. OK, but some people don't want to make small talk to strangers. Found the bedroom a bit cold and no heating at all in the shower room.

Review 56:Hotel moments away from railway station. Jane-housekeeper was very friendly. We had a big bedroom with 2 windows, each with lovely views overlooking different bridges. Comfortable bed. Guests shared use of a fridge on the landing (also complimentary fresh milk).

Review 57:Everything fine please see full review.

Review 58:Castle Vale House is situated in a beautiful scenic position, from the front you can look to the left for views along the River Tweed as far as the town centre bridges. Look to your right for views along the river and through the spectacular ‘Stephenson Viaduct.’ Besides the views the car park has plenty of space. We had Room 1 a superior double which had two windows from which the above described views could be enjoyed. This room was tastefully and comfortably furnished, with a large comfortable double bed. The bathroom was fitted with at first sight what appeared to be a space age shower unit, but was in fact just an ordinary shower as none of the electrics were connected. There was unfortunately no heater in this shower room and we found it rather cold after showering. The breakfasts were in a nice dining room and were very enjoyable and enough to set you up for the day. The landlady was very pleasant, helpful, and caring person, who did her utmost to ensure our stay, was perfect. If we visit Berwick on Tweed again this would be our first choice for accommodation. Castle Vale House is within easy walking distance from the town centre, and is ideally situated for anyone travelling by train.

Review 59:Castle Vale House is ideally situated for the train station but also in a quiet beautiful area. We couldn't fault our room it was stunning with really comfortable bed and pillows, also good choice of cooked breakfast along with cereals, fresh fruit salad, home made yoghurt, jams and bread.

Review 60:The sausage at breakfast! Great food apart from that but they were tough and tasteless. Everything else about our stay was spot on.

Review 61:We were greeted by the most friendly owner and her assistant and made tho feel very welcome. They were so helpful with information about the local area too.

Review 62:Easy to find ,good car parking, right next to station and railway line but very quiet undisturbed sleep. Free wi-fi. Very good location, easy walk into town centre. Would stay again

Review 63:Probably the best b&b we've stayed in. The house is gorgeous and the views from our room were stunning, but what really made it was the genuine warmth of the owner. Breakfast was delicious too! Can't recommend highly enough.

Review 64:large amount of dog hair in the main hall. Husband is severely allergic reactions to animal hair which effected his health during our stay Bathroom needs updating.

Review 65:friendly staff, free car park, memorabilia photographs of owners' family.

Review 66:We were very pleased with our stay and would revisit Castle Vale. Anyone who does not like dogs, however, should be aware there is a (very quiet and friendly) family pet dog! Double bed could have been larger for the size of room, however our hosts were very obliging and made up an additional single bed.

Review 67:Margaret, the Proprietor, could not have been more welcoming, charming and helpful. You were encouraged to view Castle Vale as a 'home from home'. Superb and plentiful breakfast! Castle Vale House enjoys an excellent location in a quiet spot, with superb views of the River Tweed and both the railway and road bridges. Yet only a short walk from the town centre and its facilities. Excellent on-site parking - unusual for Berwick-upon-Tweed.

Review 68:It would have been nice to have internet access in rooms, not just communal areas.

Review 69:Really friendly staff and nothing was touch trouble. Comfortable bed and newly renovated enough suite.

Review 70:Nothing at all.

Review 71:What we liked was the position, especially the views over the estuary from the bedroom, and the calm. Real coffee is very welcome as well.

Review 72:It wasn't a problem but the toilet was very noisy

Review 73:In a very relaxing spot.lovely views of the river and even though so close to the railway station. It was very quiet.found the people in the town very friendly.it was just a nice break with a lot of interesting things to see

Review 74:This is a lovely place for a relaxing, stress free stay. The staff are very attentive and could not do enough to help. We will definitely be going back next year.

Review 75:loved the place from the start, only a few yards from the station.the staff were so pleasent and helpfull.comfortable room with a great view of the bridge and river. great breakfast and service. would definatley recommend this lovely hotel. great stay.

Review 76:Nothing.

Review 77:The great location, the guest house is situated very close to the railway station. the staff ere extremely friendly and very helpful. The cooked breakfast was superb.

Review 78:Having a double bed instead of the kingsize that we are used to was the only thing that stopped us from having a good sleep. If we go again we will book the room with twin beds.

Review 79:Great location. Lovely views of the river and bridge that was lit up at night. Very quiet and peaceful location, yet only a few minutes walk into the centre. Quirky and interesting rooms and dining room - a unique and interesting place to stop.

Review 80:Nothing!

Review 81:The host, Margaret, is an exceptionally lovely and friendly women who not only met us at the station unexpectedly but also gave us lots of hints and tips on what to do. Breakfast was lovely - cooked to order. Beds were super comfy and rooms well fitted out. The views of the bridge are stunning & there's a really nice walk along the river into town (down a lot of steps through a park - so you can walk through town instead if that doesn't suit you). Great stay. Would definitely recommend and come again in the future.

Review 82:View of the historic RR bridge over the Tweed; Quiet setting despite location close to the train station; charming old house; friendly and helpful proprietress; excellent breakfast

Review 83:Having to leave

Review 85:We had no complaints at all.

Review 86:We were warmly welcomed by Margaret, shown to our fantastic room with its view of the viaduct and river. Breakfast was really very good the next morning, cooked to perfection. A lovely dog, Jeannie, who pops in too say hi after breakfast. Nice touch, very homey.

Review 87:Kind of difficult to get there. Poor indications. But once you arrive, they make you feel great.

Review 88:Hospitality Comfortable room Lovely hosts Superb breakfast

Review 89:We liked the situation of the Hotel, we were made very welcome by the owners. The breakfast was substantial and very tasty. The room was unique, we loved staying at Castle Vale, would recommend it to others.

Review 90:The breakfast, the friendliness of the owner Margaret and her assistant Will, the location, which is so convenient, the fresh milk in the fridge on the landing.

Review 91:Our stay was only 3 nights!

Review 92:Everything about this b n b was first class, from the magnificent views from the bedroom to the fabulous breakfast. The hostess was very welcoming and knowledgeable and nothing was too much bother. We'll be back!

Review 93:Found lighting in bedroom a little bit lacking. This is now resolved as Margaret has bought a standard lamp to replace the table lamp. Therefor no 'dislikes' .

Review 94:Ability of the hosts to make sure you were very well looked after without being in any way intrusive. Superb location for quietness and brilliant views

Review 95:The house was charming and our room had a lovely view of the bridge and river. The breakfasts were delicious and our hosts went the extra mile in terms of hospitallity and thoughtfulness.

Review 97:I loved the location and the house was just spectacular. Jessie (the dog) also gave us a very warm welcome

Review 98:Helpful and considerate hosts Good location with plenty of parking, a short walk into the centre of town. Spacious room Nice views form the property

Review 99:If I had to criticise anything at all I would say the bed was maybe a little too soft for me but still comfortable nevertheless.

Review 100:Absolutely everything!

Review 101:Friendly staff. Clean comfortable and spacious room. Excellently furnished. Shower and bathroom very clean. Very relaxing stay. Strongly recommend.

Review 102:Beautiful interesting house with fabulous views! Lovely comfortable bedroom - facilities were excellent and the breakfast was superb! Thoroughly recommend.

Review 103:Couldn't have wished for a better located B&B, the view out of our bedroom's two windows was fabulous. We were made to feel very welcome and Margaret gave us lots of information about the area. The breakfast was delicious, especially the home made bread and yoghurt. Wouldn't hesitate to book again next time I visit the area!

Review 104:That we stayed there for only one night.

Review 105:We received a warm welcome there! Our twin room turned out to be spacious and beautifully furnished, with a nice view (perfect for Instagram). Breakfast was very good. Hotel is 3 minutes walking from the rail station. I would recommend this place as a "base" for day trips to Edinburgh or other places of interest in this region. But Berwick itself is a very beautiful town, definitely worth a visit.

Review 106:The bathroom adjacent to mine had a shared window which meant that if the people next door used their bathroom during the night, my room was flooded with light. The sound of their exhaust fan was also quite loud. This problem can be largely avoided by keeping your bathroom door closed at night, but I had to learn this after I was disturbed on the first night.

Review 107:The owner is very welcoming and does everything possible to make your stay perfect. My room was gorgeous - large and beautifully furnished. Shared breakfast in the dining room is a happy feature of the way the house is run.

Review 108:only negative was long driveway which was a bit steep whiich would not be good for anyone who has difficulty wth walking it was also not very well lit.

Review 109:nice traditional rooms.comfy bed.,right next to train station lovely views.Very friendly welcome and lovely breakfast

Review 110:Not entirely sure the marmalade was home made as described!

Review 111:Great views of river from our double room - and fridge with cold milk available for early morning coffee - nice touch.

Review 112:WIFI in the room was not very stable.

Review 113:Very good location, near the station. We had a room with view on the bridge: spectaculair. Breakfast was cooked real good. People were all very friendly.

Review 114:No negatives

Review 115:We arrived on bikes in the rain and were met by Margaret who was so helpful in everyway, getting us in and settled and then arranging to take our bikes to dry safe storage. The room was really clean and comfortable and the building was beautiful - it was like staying in an old and large family house. Breakfast was really good with a splendid view of the amazing Victorian railway viaduct. Quiet and relaxing and highly recommended.

Review 116:Our hosts were so friendly and helpful and our room had a wonderful view of the Tweed and the viaduct. We also had comfortable chairs in a seating area in our room. The property is very near the station and the centre of the town. Breakfast was very good.

Review 117:Our stay at castle vale was lovely. This is a well looked after family run house. All the people were pleasant and nothing was a problem to them. I would recommend this B and B to all our friends and family. I would certainly return again.

Review 118:Not the end of the world but the plumbing was very old and noisy, and you were requested not to flush the toilet at night for risk of disturbing other guests.

Review 119:The room was clean and spacious. The view from our bedroom window over the viaduct and River Tweed was lovely, as was the walk along the river into the town. The owners were very friendly, helpful and informative of the hotel and surroundings.

Review 120:Berwick town rather uninspiring!

Review 121:Location Lovely big room, well appointed and very clean Paid extra for superior room - would recommend doing this - lovely views over river Great breakfasts - Margaret was very hospitable Good base for travelling round the area

Review 122:The steep climb back from the river walk could be difficult for less athletic patrons but can be avoided by returning through the town.

Review 123:Welcome. Homemade bread and jams as well as fabulous food. Great attention to detail by the owners to make your stay as pleasant as possible. Fabulous view of river and viaduct from front facing rooms. Restaurants etc easily accessible along the river walk. Many interesting places within travelling distance...Holy Island, Lindisfarne and Bamburgh castles, Alnwick Gardens and Barter Books in Alnwick.
