Reviews for Hôtel De La Cathédrale
Review 1:Top location right in the city center! The staff is really friendly, and the rooms are comfy enough. It is situated in a really old building with a special atmosphere
Review 2:Fantastic location, friendly, helpful staff. I really loved being in such an old historic building, with my room overlooking part of the Cathedral.
Review 3:Ask for a room at the back. Our first floor superior room at the front of the building was quite noisy from passing pedestrians during the night ( no traffic though)
Review 4:Charming breakfast room and excellent quiet location in the heart of the old city centre.
Review 5:They provide a kettle, but unfortunately not emough tea or coffee or milk or sugar for more than one person, despite a double booking for two! No central parking for more than two hours so a bit of a hike from the Cathedral car park with luggage! ( good value at €15 per day)
Review 6:Situated in a very quaint historic area, central to everything. Much nicer on the inside when you get through the "seedy" doorway in the narrow passageway!!!!
Review 7:Breakfast could be more....i.e., a toaster, an egg boiler, for the cost, I would recommend popping into one of the many cafes for a coffee and croissant
Review 8:The location was excellent. Such unique layout of the hotel.
Review 9:They tried to run my credit card and for some strange reason It wouldn't go through but it worked immediately at the gas station. Had to pay in cash/euros that I really needed. Beds are very hard because box spring not there and had difficult time sleeping. Very dark stair way up to room.
Review 10:Location beautiful cathedral seen at the hotel entrance, however it is very noisy as drunks at night yell at the top of their lungs because its in an alley way that echo's. Loved the bath tub to soak in.
Review 11:This isn't the most comfortable of hotels. Our lovely little room had minimal furniture and came with the smallest bathroom I have ever seen- the ceiling was too low for my (admittedly tall) boyfriend to even stand upright. Nevertheless, the room was clean, the bed was fine and there was good water pressure in the shower.
Review 12:This is a charming hotel at very little distance from all the great touristic highlights at Rouen. Would warmly recommend it to anyone who's up for a romantic getaway and likes beautiful old buildings, French wallpaper and antique furniture.
Review 13:Hotel is down a small alley, difficult to find. Go down alley, drop luggage off, THEN go to parking garage three blocks away. Hallway in front of our room not lighted. I am over 65 and my sister is close to 74. We had to get on our knees to use the key to unlock door with old fashioned key. Would be nice to have some light in front of our doorway.
Review 14:Staff very friendly and accommodating. Room comfortable. Location great.
Review 15:We didn't feel safe. There is no light (almost black) when you get out of an elevator, and you must walk past stairs (going down) to get to light switch. When coming in after 9 PM, it is hard to see where you unlock the front door and you are in an old bare street- almost an alley. After you get in, you walk through a very dark reception room, go through courtyard, then into next building.(They should at least have motion sensors in reception area.) Balcony door was ajar when we arrived. Had we not noticed that behind the curtain, anyone could have come in. Also, we knew you had to park elsewhere, but expected to be able to park in front of hotel to unload. If you want to do that, you have to pay extra for a tour. Seriously. Lights were not working above sink. When we told woman at desk, she sort of laughed at us, like we were expecting too much. Internet NEVER worked. When I told receptionist, she said I must not have done it right. I've traveled all over the world. I know how to do it. The fact that she had given me 5 codes to try just in case one didn't work just shows they know there are issues with Wi Fi there.
Review 16:Low cost
Review 17:I arrived around 9PM and they were closing the door. There is no concierge at night so I am not sure how I would have entered? It's probably best to have plugs.
Review 18:Old fashion style of hotel, really pretty interior, loved the room and good breakfast.
Review 19:Internet unreliable, kept dropping and very slow. Made doing business while traveling impossible.
Review 20:Central location, information from staff at the desk, breakfast. loved the WC in the tiny closet - gave us a great laugh.
Review 21:Room (21) was disappointing. It was soulless, out of the way along corridors and up some pokey narrow stairs, the toilet door was a folding metal contraption with louvred slats - impossible to close when seated - thank God I was on my own. Wifi worked well in reception but not at all in room - receptionist seemed surprised when I told her, as if nobody had pointed that out before and certainly no suggestion of a discount for lack of advertised facilities. I didn't bother with breakfast, there's a Paul just along the road. I may have had the worst room in the hotel in which case other rooms may have offered a more positive experience.
Review 22:Handy location for town centre. Car park a 5 - 10 minute walk away.
Review 23:Although they say parking this is none existent....you have to fight through the traffic to find an overnight space be careful as the authorities tow away your car. WIFI also none existent.
Review 24:Bedroom very good but had the smallest toilet in the world if you are 5'10 or more don't book this hotel.
Review 25:The building infrastructure in the common space (corridor, stairs, etc.) are naturally old, but nothing of concern.
Review 26:Great value with the best possible location in the historic quarter of Rouen, friendly staff (a little French helps), and a clean and well maintained room.
Review 27:One minor tip - please add milk to the tea making facilities
Review 28:Perfect location. Lovely character hotel. Friendly and helpful staff and lovely zen garden.
Review 29:Room wall is thin. No frill chic hotel. Don't expect too much from room. Big luggage will have problem going up the very narrow stairs. Breakfast is not worth the 11 euro.
Review 30:Good location. To explore the town. A good place to crash for the night.
Review 31:EXTREMELY LOUD. Don't expect to get any sleep here. the Hotel sits in an old alley way that has incredible acoustics and connects the core parts of Rouen so it's busy with night life, tourists, bar hopping youth etc at all hours of the night and the acoustics are like being in a concert hall. People were shouting, singing, cheering laughing outside the window down below all night and there was no escaping the noise.
Review 32:Beautiful old building and PERFECT Location.
Review 33:Facilities a little ramshackle even allowing for the difficulty of inserting hotel rooms with ensuites into an old structure.
Review 34:Position and tranquility.
Review 35:The breakfast was mediocre considering the cost of 11 euros each. We had large cooked breakfasts for less money elsewhere. I don't think they should have a cat wandering around the breakfast room. WiFi was erratic in the room. Bed was fine but room is very tight for space as one would expect in an old world hotel. Sound proofing minimal between rooms, can hear conversations and snoring at night.
Review 36:Excellent interesting and historic location in the heart of the old city. The interior courtyard garden was very lovely. Receptionist was very helpful and could speak English well. The breakfast room is beautifully decorated but food did not live up to the decor quality.
Review 37:Room 28. Shower screen had to be propped to keep it from swinging into the tub. Minor. Cute house cat kept using my denim-covered leg as a scratching post during breakfast. Also minor.
Review 38:This is a beautiful place in a world of sterile hotel chains. Lovely courtyard, comfortable room, well-equipped bathroom, quite good breakfast and an 8 am wake-up call provided by the cathedral across the alley.
Review 39:Arrived in Rouen at 20.00 with no reservation - they gave good directions to the hotel and made sure someone was there to receive us even though we arrived after closing time.
Review 40:The wifi was a bit hit or miss
Review 41:The hotel is centrally located and within walking distance of all the sights. Every thing about the hotel- decor, room, cleanliness and breakfast was fine. Good value
Review 42:We needed to store food in refrigerator near kitchen. Felt uncomfortable doing so with some of the staff. No staff in hotel after 9:00. Difficulty with finding parking but eventually it was fairly easy. Wouldn't recommend for people with mobility issues for carting suitcases.
Review 43:Location was excellent. Loved the history of the area and hotel.
Review 44:Standard rooms very small and need of renovation Superior toons much better but hotel needs to be renovated or at least painted Wifi very slow
Review 45:Location and friendly staff
Review 46:The wash basin in a separate room to that of the toilet and the shower. Damp stains on the ceiling. Overall slightly tatty. Staff slightly surly.
Review 47:Good location for Cathedral. Good breakfast.
Review 48:Cold, impersonal staff. No elevator to 3rd floor where my room was. Wifi too weak, no signal available in room 24.
Review 49:Location in historical centre of Rouen
Review 50:I was not impressed with the lack of friendliness of the reception staff, which is a pity because I regard it as one of the most important criteria for returning to a hotel. On street parking was difficult to find as so central to town, and not the most salubrious of areas, despite being so close to the cathedral.
Review 51:Excellent location and very attractive hotel
Review 52:The Wifi worked a little erratically, and the mattress was quite firm. However, these were small considerations, and we greatly enjoyed our stay.
Review 53:The staff at the hotel were friendly and helpful. The location was great, very interesting small shops in a historic setting. The breakfast buffet was varied and generous. Parking was available quite nearby, and prices were very reasonable.
Review 54:There was no bad experience, but I thought the cleanliness of the bathroom could have been better. I found several black hairs on the floor. Parking was not particularly convenient, but I do understand that in the middle of a city like Rouen, parking spaces are at a premium.
Review 55:We loved the character of the hotel, it is old and quirky, and the courtyard is an oasis of calm. I got my requested room overlooking the courtyard, and it was delightfully quiet. The room was a generous size, and it was good to have a kettle base, even if the kettle itself was in the corridor, to be shared I imagined. The location was excellent, right in the centre, close to restaurants, and the Cathedral.
Review 56:Don't try and drive to this hotel, you can't! You have to park a short distance away in a public underground car park then drag your bags through the streets. No air conditioning. The double bed was against a wall on one side. Water leaking from the room above by the door of our room. Neither of us could connect to the the "Free Wifi", and we do have some experience at this so it wasn't us!
Review 57:A bit quirky. Very central.
Review 58:Car park was further than we'd expected and would have been difficult to just drop our bags off. Need to factor in the cost of the parking.
Review 59:Very welcoming staff, superb location close to famous cathedral, very attractive courtyard, excellent breakfast
Review 60:Parking was a nightmare with young children and a large car as car too high to go city underground car park and street parking busy but it was a bank holiday in France so perhaps not reflective of the usual position. Also you cannot get to the hotel by car at all as the street is pedestrianised and Rouen has a nightmare one way system!!!
Review 61:Central and clean
Review 62:The problem is that we made the reservation and then had travel problems with made us have to reschedule for next day. When notifying them of this, the reply was that they were fully booked the next day. Nonetheless, we did check there when we arrived in Rouen, only to find that they DID have some room, but the one offered was not satisfactory. Don't know what we would have had if we had arrived the night before. Thus, I paid for one night and got nothing!!!! They did refer me to the Mercure hotel which was a much newer and higher quality facility (at twice the price). Other than the location, I would have a hard time recommending this property.
Review 63:A few fixtures and fittings were a bit wobbly. Wifi didn't work past reception.
Review 64:Lovely views of court yard and city. Staff and cat were a pleasure.
Review 65:Had to park a couple of streets away in an underground public car park. safe enough but not ideal. Decor could do with modernising but then it would probably cost a fortune!
Review 66:Brilliant location right next to the cathedral. Nice central courtyard.
Review 67:Room was smaller than expected with pull out beds rather than real beds as in photo of family room. Fine for children not so good for grown ups.
Review 68:Central location excellent. Beautiful courtyard great for a but of calm.
Review 69:Having stayed at the hotel before, we were disappointed in the room that we had - it seemed to need refurbishing and was small and noisy.
Review 70:Great location in centre of beautiful city. Good breakfast, friendly staff and lovely courtyard.
Review 71:The parking was far away and it was difficult to find it and get back to the hotel. not the hotels fault, the roads are not marked well and it was a very confusing city to drive in. But, we loved it inspite of that
Review 72:No directions to the nearest car park ahead of arrival, which, especially with the street system, took me a bit of finding. But once I had it was quite close.
Review 73:Excellent location, clean, and lovely breakfast buffet, all at a good price.
Review 74:Clearly hasn't improved in years. The wifi is terrible and the rooms have seen better days.
Review 75:Good location. Good breakfast buffet and the courtyard was charming.
Review 76:We would stay here again.
Review 77:The location in Rouen is fantastic. You can walk everywhere and the recommended local parking was 15 euros for 24 hours. This is an old building, so has expected 'quirks' like sometimes dicey plumbing, and not much soundproofing. It is also quite noisy at night and in the morning if you open your windows on to the road but this is to be expected from such an ideal location. We were with 4 children (18, 16, 8, 6) and the family room we had was spacious and comfortable, with two single pull out beds and a large bathroom with bath. The teenagers were in a room next door and theirs was smaller but totally serviceable. The staff were friendly and helpful. The breakfast was a thrill for all 4 children and they ate endless pains au chocolat. The courtyard area inside the hotel is really quiet and peaceful.
Review 78:Wifi did not work, could not allocate IP address when we were there.
Review 79:Great location, comfortable beds. Make sure to book a restaurant early as all the good ones close by are booked up early!
Review 80:The room seemed lovely but the toilet leaked and didn't flush properly and the water in the sink was a greenish colour and took ages to drain away. We didn't even attempt the shower which was a shame because we had been travelling for 8 hours.
Review 81:We liked the location.
Review 82:Location is excellent but the hotel is hard to find and the one way system in Rouen doesn't help. We parked in the underground and walked to the hotel.
Review 83:The staff was fabulous and allowed us to stow our baggage until the room was ready. We had 2 rooms. One had obviously been renovated and one was definitely need of some work--water stains on the ceiling and wall in one area. The rooms were spacious and super well situated and walkable to anything. I have to say they have THE BEST continental breakfast I have EVER had!!! So many options! One of our part has celiac disease and there were many items that she could eat. We would definitely stay here agin.
Review 84:Quite noisy on street around 6am. Tricky to get a parking slot but was free on street Saturday evening and Sunday
Review 85:We liked the location and loved the well managed breakfast room. Reception was very welcoming, and accommodated our request for an extra bed and our small dog.
Review 86:Unfortunately, as our rooms were located on the side looking over the Cathedral which we thought was great for the atmosphere of being on a medieval street we were unlucky to have a lot of very noisy people shouting late at night and thus had a disturbed sleep
Review 87:Great location for walking around the town. The courtyard and dining room were a great taste of France and charming
Review 88:Room 16 was very small for 3 nights with bed crammed into a corner; décor was nice but tired (peeling paint, discoloured pipework etc). Wifi was erratic and rarely worked while we were there. Would have liked tea/coffee facilities in room.
Review 89:Excellent location, historic building with lovely courtyard and beautiful breakfast room. Friendly staff. Good bed and shower.
Review 90:felt guilty that our daughter, son-in-law and grandson did not have a room as good as ours. However, theirs was a late booking.
Review 91:Loved the courtyard garden
Review 92:Toilet was in a cupboard! When we asked for a kettle for the room, we were told some rooms had tea making facilities, some didn't. No effort made to accommodate our request.
Review 93:Location right in centre of beautiful old city. Lovely courtyard.
Review 94:Basic facilities and needs alot of maintenance. Very dated hotel which you pay purely for location.
Review 95:The location of the hotel was excellent but it was a pity I chose that hotel to stay in.
Review 96:No air con and was a warm evening.
Review 97:Lovely building, felt like a real traditional French hotel. Very different to the regular chain hotels and in its own charming way, much better!
Review 98:there is very poor soundproofing between rooms and to corridors. conversations can be clearly heard between rooms.
Review 99:Charming hotel, friendly and helpful staffs, good breakfast and very well located.
Review 100:Wish it had air conditioning or at least fans in rooms.
Review 101:Wonderful location, charming courtyard, friendly cat, helpful staff who directed us to a terrific sound-and-light spectacle nearby. Charming and full of character, eager to return!
Review 102:Wifi wouldn't quite reach to my room so I had to go down to the lobby to retrieve messages.
Review 103:Loved the garden! (and the cat!) The location was superb.
Review 104:Rooms are not well isolated.
Review 105:No need to take breakfast in hotel, easy to eat outside nearby. Very central location. cute garden (with friendly cat...).
Review 106:The third bed in the room was quite narrow, but luckily the person sleeping in it was petite, because a larger or older person would have very little room to turn.
Review 107:Cute old hotel, great location, good breakfast.
Review 108:Nothing
Review 109:Located in the middle of the old town restricted to pedestrians and away from bars and restaurants. So it is quiet and convenient. Perfect for discovering the old city. Lots of restaurants and shop to chose from close by or just relax in the court yard where it is peace and quiet.
Review 110:Wifi virtually unusable in bedroom ; hard to go to the lobby to get reception. The staff attitude was a bit variable, ranging between doing anything to help to complete disinterest. Room access with luggage was challenging.
Review 111:Excellent location. Good breakfast. Outdoor courtyard.
Review 112:Wifi didn't work in our room at the top of the building (room 24)
Review 113:Traditional feel of the hotel, not a modern box. Lovely little courtyard. Brilliant location
Review 114:In desperate need of a refurb. Extremely noisy from the kitchen and courtyard early in the morning. Very small room and very beige (nothing like the pics). Breakfast (although offered for free) was very disappointing - we were glad we hadn't paid for it. Our front door key didn't work and so were locked out of the hotel that evening for 20 mins until other guests (luckily) turned up. We hadn't been told about the keypad.
Review 115:Location is amazing. The receptionist was great and quick to offer a free breakfast after we had been locked out the night before. Clean. Pretty courtyard.
Review 116:Very kind staff who looked after us after we arrived late. Beautiful rooms and building, loved the courtyard and befriended the cat that lives in reception. Such a cute place and sooo close to everything. Would stay here again in a moment.
Review 117:Very nice, charm-full hotel for those seeking a typical place. Very nice courtyard and dinning room. The breakfast was, for French standards, very good.
Review 118:it had no air conditioning, so we had to sleep with the windows open. The cobble stone street outside our window was a major thoroughfare for young revelers until 1:00 a.m., causing me to have one of the worst nights sleep in recent history.
Review 119:It was close to the cathedral . The room was vey quaint, very old school French .
Review 120:Perfect location, next door to the cathedral. Lovely, quirky interior with a beautiful courtyard. Room was clean and bed comfortable. Our shower plumbing was a little basic but overall that didn't matter. Oh . . . the 'hotel cat' is lovely too!
Review 121:Our sink was in one room, separated from the shower/toilet. We worked with it but it wasn't ideal.
Review 122:Location, courtyard and breakfast we great.
Review 123:nothing to say here.
Review 124:The location of the hotel was great. A very quirky layout property with lovely staff. Rouen is a lovely city to visit with amazing buildings,
Review 125:The room was small, in need of a little updating. Also the house cat who roams the hotel & garden sheds, so a caveat to those who are allergic. The garden chairs could be an issue!
Review 126:steps from the Cathedral, shopping and good restaurants
Review 127:No fridge in bedroom
Review 128:Character hotel in centre of Rouen. Bedroom reasonable although a little dated.and tired. There is no parking at the hotel. Would be helpful to have some suggested car parks on their site.
Review 129:bathroom too small. car parking 5 mins walk away.needs clarifying for first time guests
Review 130:room ok breakfast area downstairs very nice with plenty flowers
Review 131:No AC, so units get very warm. Court yard is beautiful, but used for smoking, so smoke comes into apartment. Since apartment is warm, windows have to be open. Guests get angry if baby cries out, so I would not say baby friendly.
Review 132:Beautiful view, nice court yard, fantastic location!
Review 133:Excellent location, beautiful building and room and great shower. Our room was quite large compared to most we stayed in in France. Well furnished and clean. Would stay again.
Review 134:I booked far enough ahead, but for one night I was given a room at the very top that meant carrying my luggage up a winding set of stairs (the elevator, proudly pointed out, only went part way there). It was all fine, but more on the adequate enough side
Review 135:Being right by the Rouen Cathedral was the point of my trip so the hotel location was perfect
Review 136:sometimes heard the noise from the street. other aspects of this place made up for it.
Review 137:charming place. courtyard is a nice place to relax. breakfast good. outstanding location near some great restaurants
Review 138:Where to begin. We arrived at 9:20 in the middle of music festival that was a French drunk fest. While this is not the fault of the hotel, the rest was. First you can't reach the hotel by car. It is only reachable by foot down a dark alley. There was no lit sign. It was a door in the alley wall. Try finding that with a GPS. Since it was after 9:00. The manager had locked up and gone home. The PIN number I had did not work. The only way we even got into the hotel was when another couple came along that was staying there and let us in. They had the phone number for the manager and called him for us. He told them just to give us the keys hanging behind the desk. The hallways weren't lit. The floors weren't swept. Our shower was still wet. There was hair in the sheets. The wifi didn't work. The phone in the room didn't work. The music from the festival blared until 1:00 and then drunken carousing went on until 2:00 right under our window. The hotel is way over priced to begin with and then the final straw was being charged €60 for a continental breakfast. Our experience couldn't have been worse.
The Fine Print
If you expect to arrive after 9 pm, you need to contact the hotel in advance to obtain an entrance code.
