Whyteside House descritpion

This award-winning B&B is situated in Berwick-upon-Tweed, an historic coastal town and the most northerly town in England. The old walls that surround the town are a 10-minute walk away, and the ruins of the castle are also nearby.
For over 400 years, Berwick was a crucial area in the border wars between England and Scotland. It has numerous striking sights, including bridges across the River Tweed, and a number of pretty old buildings. Norham Castle, which has been besieged at least 13 times in its history, is a 15-minute drive from Whyteside House.
Rooms at Whyteside are elegant and traditionally furnished, and each has a flat-screen TV and tea and coffee making facilities. Every room also benefits from a modern en suite bathroom with free toiletries.
A home-cooked, hearty breakfast is provided each morning. A wide range of restaurants, eateries and cafes can be reached within 15 minutes’ walk.

Reviews for Whyteside House

Review 1:one tiny tiny quibble - wife didn't like the coffee at breakfast but excellent all round

Review 2:friendly & helpful staff. Very comfortable.perfect in town location. Can definitely recommend

Review 3:Disappointed room wasn't cleaned on the Saturday while we was out, bin still full of rubbish and tea & milk not refreshed.

Review 4:Very friendly staff, excellent location and a lovely room and breakfast (missing mushrooms & beans)

Review 5:We had a very small bedroom with inappropriate furniture for its size making circulation almost impossible. We did ask to change the room after the first night and we were able to do this, this room was very good.

Review 6:the location was very good.

Review 7:Very tired, miss matched bedding which was old, room gloomy, secure parking was not as expected it was a permit for the street only. Bathroom smelled of bleach but black mould on shower

Review 8:Host was friendly if a bit talkative. Breakfast as expected but limited.

Review 9:the beds could be abit longer not suitable for tall people, abit noisy outside.

Review 10:cleanliness allround, helpfull & friendly owners , value for money definatley stay again

Review 11:Very uncomfortable bed. Poor quality bedding. The slats had come loose on one side so my husband spent all night trying not to roll out of bed. We felt the hotel was quite expensive for the quality of room and furnishings. Breakfast basic but adequate.

Review 12:A very handy location in the centre of town.

Review 13:Everything was as expected with great help and support

Review 14:A great stay in a lovely town. From the moment we entered the help and support was excellent. I would love to stay again- Thank you

Review 15:Uncomfortable bed (mattress very dated); small room; very basic breakfast. Overall, extremely expensive for the quality of stay offered.

Review 16:Central location; parking permit available from host.

Review 17:Sheets looked unchanged (had to ask for them to be changed again). Bed was awful - springs were loud and uncomfortable. Cups for drinks were old and stained.

Review 18:close to town

Review 19:Very basic room, noise from road outside or seagulls if you were in another room Room very tiny no good if you were staying for more than one night Breakfast basic

Review 20:Host very friendly and helpful Very clean, plenty of hot water

Review 21:On street parking.Room was noisy from the outside traffic, could do with double glazing.Small bed.toilet flush handle was falling off.Breakfast although good was ordinary ,no choice.

Review 22:G Bloc action within easy walking distance to shops pubs restaurants etc

Review 23:Although the the details of the accommodation said parking was available. It was not off street as expected and was on the main road which was hit and miss

Review 24:Convenient

Review 25:Hard to find, sat nav to us to back of property but no signage visible and when figured out where we needed to be had driven past twice.

Review 26:Friendly welcome, impressive staircase, once parked on street town was short walk away no need to move car

Review 27:Room far too small for international travellers with large cases, we had to unpack one case in the bathroom. Room measured 10 feet by 12 feet so even with a small double bed it was a squeeze. Also need shelf in bathroom for somewhere to put toiletries. An extra fee of 1.5% was charged by using our Visa...which we had not been advised. Score we booked.

Review 28:Friendly host with helpful info.

Review 29:Breakfast arrangements were a bit inflexible: you pick a time which applied all 3 mornings we were there. Items limited, no fruit, yogurt, or cheese. Shower foam in room ran out after one day and was not replaced.

Review 30:Friendly & helpful owner. Very handy location for the station; short gently downhill walk to the town centre. Busy road outside, but double glazing and shutters kept the noise out. Single communal table in breakfast room was a nice feature. Gluten free toast supplied specially on request.

Review 31:No negative comments

Review 32:Friendliness of the owner, flexibility with breakfast (if he didn't have it he would get it. Owner "Albert" was very friendly and the girls who helped out were lovely.

Review 33:Didn't like the communal breakfast round a large table, you couldn't have a private chat Full English breakfast was poor..very poor servings

Review 34:Great location. Albert the owner very helpful. Parking permit given. Room was large and comfy.

Review 35:Albert made us very welcome and helped us with parking and a guide to local attractions and restaurants. Room was small but immaculately clean and supplied with toile tries and tea/coffee facilities. We had to be away early and Albert made sure we could still have breakfast

Review 36:I had driven for a few hours and arrived tired but was welcomed with a smile by the owner and shown where to park so I didn't get a ticket, great clean room with fab facilities didn't have breakfast as I left early but they left me some cold milk out with cereal which just filled a gap

Review 37:Attention to detail helping the guest feel at home was appreciated. The local knowledge of our host helped us gain the most from our exploration of the area.

Review 38:BB status only, only on road parking. breakfast times:7.45-8.00-8.15 or 8.30 no in between not very impressed with the frontage looks very shabby. Has also a problem with noise from the main road which is a busy route through the town owner has tried to combat this but traffic noise can still be heard.

Review 39:Location not bad

Review 40:Not a picturesque location but we were not looking for that

Review 41:This is an efficiently run B&B with a pleasant atmosphere and large clean rooms. Well located in the centre of town. The double glazed windows prevented the location on the main road being a problem

Review 42:Ideal location to explore Northumberland and the Scottish Borders and within easy walking distance of the town centre and quayside. Friendly staff and particularly liked all the guests sitting round a big table for breakfast so you could swap tips on things to see and do

Review 43:The window had to be opened as it was a very warm night, but road traffic started very early

Review 44:The welcome by the staff and sharing a breakfast table. We met some interesting people over breakfast.

Review 45:The traffic noise, which was beyond the hotel's control.

Review 46:The general amosphere. Home from home, friendly and extremely helpful staff, nothing seemed too much trouble with senile customers being quite demanding ,myself and friend being so.The no children policy suited us immensely.

Review 47:We thoroughly enjoyed our stay. The room was very clean and had everything we needed plus some extras. The room was extremely clean and excellent shower and clean bathroom. We found the staff and food was excellent and we would certainly stay there again. Really good value for money.

Review 48:Just the early morning chorus of seagulls out the window but realise this isn't the hotels fault :)

Review 49:Tidiness, decor, lots of tv channels, tea facilities, range of breakfast, size of room, restaurant recommendation guide with opening hours ( really useful on a Sunday when most are shut) hotel location, really helpful owners

Review 50:We found it impossible to close the bedroom window so at times it was quite draughty . Our bed is in need of a new mattress as the current one is past its best.

Review 51:The room at the back of the house was very quiet. Towels were changed daily even when it was not necessary and there was always a replenishment of water, tea/coffee and biscuits. Wifi access was good. Breakfast was well organised and the host ensured everyone had what they needed. We

Review 52:Stayed for three nights to explore Northumberland area. Owners full of great info and ideas, room large and comfy. Didn't realise there was so much to see in area, so will definitely be coming back.

Review 53:Breakfast could be more substantial, i.e. the inclusion of beans, mushrooms and fried bread would have greatly improved this although the quality of the meal on offer was good

Review 54:Location

Review 55:Nothing

Review 56:Friendly host who really made us feel welcome. Comfortable and well presented accommodation. Great location and great breakfast. Will definitely stay again if visiting Berwick.

Review 57:the weather!!! but that couldn't be helped

Review 58:Location - for train station and town itself. Welcome and friendliness of owner, gave us all the info we needed, then left us to it. Comfortable, clean room, good shower with complimentary toiletries. Nice touches, ie complimentary bottled water and tissues. Nice breakfast.

Review 59:No negative comments other than the outside sign could have been larger. Missed it and drove by twice! Had to ask for directions.

Review 60:Very comfortable. Lovely room. Good English breakfast. Great location. Very personable proprietors.

Review 61:Perhaps biggest gripe was the noise but we were prepared for this and if you could suffer the windows closed then I don't it would be a problem. Trip Advisor had warned us about it so we were not surprised.

Review 62:Just returned from four day stay at Whyteside House. Our room was rather small as we had booked late but still very comfortable. Overlooked the busy main road so was disturbed by traffic noise and rowdy seagulls who appeared to be awake all night. Breakfasts were very good with cereals, full English and toast / tea / coffee. Very convenient for everything you need with Co-op just down the road, newsagent opposite and an excellent fish & chip shop what will supply you with gluten free chips and fish / mushy peas ( very welcome)Lots of other places to eat and also Wetherspoons pub (Leaping Salmon ) with pints at £1.64p. All in all very enjoyable place to stay while visiting Berick upon Tweed and realising what an interesting place it is and so much to see.

Review 63:-£80 was a lot for a night at a simple B&B establishment. -Parking was on the main road outside and not in a private area. -The outside was noisy with either pub drinkers, traffic or seagulls. -Having to share a breakfast table with other guests. The mattress was uncomfortable.

Review 64:Cleanliness of the establishment. Town centre location.
