Reviews for Marshall Meadows Country House Hotel
Review 1:Good Location. Great Welcome. Friendly staff and great service. Hotel has plenty of character. Good Food with best breakfast I've had in a long time.
Review 2:The food was just okay and the dining area was so drab and dull . Was not impressed with brown hand towels which I complained about and which were changed for cream ones for duration of our stay.
Review 3:The lounge with the open fire. The bedroom we were in was comfortable but we felt overpriced at more than 100£ per night. Also liked the fact that the coastal path was nearby .
Review 4:The room I had (11) was little tired and could do with some attention.
Review 5:A fabulous hotel in a gorgeous location with very friendly and helpful staff. I would be happy to stay there again.
Review 6:We had a very warm, friendly welcome - and our dog was also welcomed. We were able to leave the dog alone in our room, which made life easier at breakfast. The room was very comfortable and clean - a great place to stay!
Review 7:Dining room was too warm both at dinner and at breakfast. Heating was on too high in hotel generally. Not very green.
Review 8:Good location with lovely views over Robin Hood's Bay.
Review 9:Cobwebs (lots of them) in bedroom. Shower curtain clean but brown edges with use. Painted old furniture chipped and paintwork shabby. Decor needs overhaul as house is too lovely to ignore.
Review 10:Evening meal was excellent. Comfortable beds. Beautiful house and grounds.
Review 11:The decor in places was very dated and a little shabby in the circulation areas eg stairs and corridors.
Review 12:The staff were so friendly and the location good. Breakfast was very nice.
Review 13:The hotel is situated in a great location for visiting local attractions like Bamburgh and Holy Island. Very quiet location situated in lovely grounds. Looks impressive as you drive up. The staff were extremely friendly and were very obliging, we liked the nice touches like taking your food order in the bar area and showing you to your table when your first course was ready. Nice to see water and bread already on the table. Rooms were nice decorated what I would call 'shabby chic'. A few areas paint wise needed a little attention in our room but overall to a good standard. Lovely relaxing lounge and bar areas to use. Lovely food, great quality breakfast.
Review 14:The place looked scruffy, not dirty but in desperate need of a redecoration. The front door paint was chipped giving bad first impression. Also the internal doors banged when closing.
Review 15:The location - we were stopping off for 1 night on our way home from holiday. Also the complimentary coffee and shortbread was excellent.
Review 16:Check-out could have been slicker but staff were having to multi-task in other departments. Desk really should be manned in the morning until all guests have checked out.
Review 17:Room was comfortable, food was exceptional, staff friendly, very peaceful location. The manager/owner/mein host was very helpful, friendly and knowledgeable and enhanced our stay. We would definitely return and hope we get the opportunity to do so in the future!
Review 18:Beautiful place to stay, so cosy and welcoming and a lovely coastal walk for the dog. The food was excellent and everybody was so friendly. Will definitely be back soon
Review 19:Booked a double room and got 2single beds had to move them together. Although the receptionist did say they cpuld move it and add double bedding.
Review 20:Friendly staff. Nice place. Excellent food .nice facilities wanted to stay longer.
Review 21:Some staff could have smiled more although there were some who were very welcoming and cheerful. The happy Berwick lady on the reception when we left is the model to follow!
Review 22:A magnificent country lodge hotel built in the 1780s. The most northerly hotel in England. Very close to the A1(N) yet hidden away in the quiet of the countryside. Very good food for dinner and breakfast.
Review 23:Nearly locked out and it was only 10.30pm. Receptionist needs to make guests aware of late access to the hotel.
Review 24:The quality of the food, restaurant service and hotel decor.
Review 25:Warm welcome that felt genuine, relaxing over the menu in the lounge bar, and the sharing sea food platter exellent and very good vale. Would come again.
Review 26:To be really picky, the bed could have been more comfortable
Review 27:The staff were very welcoming and we felt very at home. The food was excellent whether it be in the the lovely restaurant or the comfortable bar. We would certainly recommend this hotel.
Review 28:Evening meal & breakfast were excellent, staff friendly & attentive to detail. Manager showed round garden and labyrinth with excellent discourse on history of property
Review 29:Nothing in particular but I do question why you only get a 24 inch tv
Review 30:Loved the location and building. The dining room, bar & sitting room were a treasure. We had dinner one evening and the food, in our case lamb shanks was excellent. Breakfast was beautifully cooked. Although on both mornings we didn't get exactly what was requested. Not a problem though.
Review 31:Road Noise was an issue and the windows were slightly past their best, and did not shut properly. Also, it's maybe just us, but having a minimum bed size of Kingsize would be better.
Review 32:Location was great, really easy to find. Absolutely beautiful building and grounds.
Review 33:A little dated, needs a bit of (neutral) paint in the rooms and general updating of furniture etc.
Review 34:Nice big family room, 2 bedrooms. Great breakfast, lovely grounds, great location
Review 35:EVERYTHING! Fabulous, character period property - genuine sense of welcome - lovely change from soul-less chains. Booked the last room but it was lovely & comfortable with a sea view as well as viewing gardens and the labyrinth. Marvellous dinner & breakfast in gorgeous panelled dining room. We will visit again!
Review 36:Although close to the A1 and the East Coast main line railway this was a surprising quiet location. Hotel was all you would expect from a country house of this period, with quaint charm and elegant proportions. Breakfast was excellent with a great choice and locally sourced produce.
Review 37:The bed could have been a little comfier but I'm a big guy which doesn't help.
Review 38:The location was great, a couple of minutes walk and you were on the coastal cliffs and could walk over the border. The food was also of a very high standard and tasted great.
Review 39:Not sign posted to get to. Very hot and stuffy corridor with no window and so room was humid too. Very small room. Problem with plug sockets. Asthma machine wouldn't work properly.. Staff talking loudly in the kitchen so all of us having breakfast in the room could hear them. Not attentive to customers needs. Elderly couple seated upstairs but could not get up and down the stairs to help themselves to breakfast. We And another couple seated on another Table took it in turns to get them breakfast, coffee, jam, butter after toast had gone cold because waitress had forgot. Staff not willing to help them. Receptionist didn't have local knowledge of places to visit. When asked said I don't know. But on the counter is a a stand with lots of leaflets.
Review 40:Bed not very comfortable, stuffy room. Had to wait at Reception for a while, not staffed, then 3 staff turned up, all trying to check us in....Room smelt of Cats.
Review 41:Location to Berwick.
Review 42:Friendly greeting when we arrived and all other staff were friendly. Excellent dinner when we decided to eat in. Room was spacious and comfortable. Hotel easy to get to from the A1 but in quiet location.
Review 43:Nothing.
Review 44:Lovely hotel. There were two couples in our party and one room was more luxurious than the other but both very clean and comfortable. Staff were lovely and very helpful. Food was excellent. Loved our stay would definitely go back again.
Review 45:Unfortunately the room first room was really smelly, however we were moved once we asked the staff. The second room was ok but the shower curtain smelt of damp and the room could have been a bit cleaner. For the price I expected better.
Review 46:The staff absolutely made the difference, they were attentive, friendly and could not do enough to help. The breakfast was lovely.
Review 47:The single duvets were too small and of poor quality and the pillows uncomfortable.
Review 48:Charming country hotel set in beautiful grounds with helpful staff and good food.
Review 49:One waiter sniffed the whole time - either he had a cold and shouldn't have been serving meals, or hay fever and he needed antihistamines
Review 50:Location, comfy bed, free bottle of wine because they forgot to bring the wine, then brought 2, when checking out hadn't put meals on bill so corrected it and gave us desserts for free for being honest!
Review 51:In need of updating. A very uncomfortable bed that moved and creaked when either of us shifted position. The room had the smallest flatscreen TV that I have ever seen, about the same size as a laptop screen, quite unusable to view or listen to.
Review 52:Good location and easy parking.
Review 53:The hotel had no record of the booking of a couple who arrived at about the same time.
Review 54:Very unpretentious country house hotel. Good value. Comfortable bedroom and really excellent dinner and breakfast. Very pleasant staff. Easy parking. Nice garden with lovely views and not too much noise from the (very close) A1. Not really a ''destination hotel'' but a good place to stay when travelling.
Review 55:Just the bed, needs a new mattress.
Review 56:The hotel is situated in a lovely location, very friendly staff, good food. Only thing to note was the bed was uncomfortable, probably just needs a new mattress. Other than that it was lovely
Review 57:A strange process whereby one is expected to go to the bar before dinner - this may work for many people but we prefer to go straight to our table and have a drink there and therefore it was very irritating.
Review 58:Terrific beautiful location - just .5 mile coastal walk from the Scottish border. Very pleasant room overlooking large front gardens. Some very helpful staff including lady who called us to let us know we had forgotten something.
Review 59:The hotel needs a refurbishment - hall carpets, skirtings etc in poor repair; the male manager when we booked in seemed in ill sorts; requests to look at the evening menu for the restaurant went unaddressed (we gave up & went into Berwick to eat); the bed and bedding were old, uncomfortable; aware of every movement in adjoining rooms - we were in R18.
Review 60:A certain old world charm; the breakfast was fine; the room was large; the grounds were lovely
Review 61:Although cooked meal was adequate, the other breakfast offerings were meagre Compared with most other hotels.
Review 62:Charming little hotel with extensive grounds and terrace. Four poster bed comfy but in need of a lick of paint.
Review 63:We stayed here Sat night, room was ideal, clean, private and the bed was very comfortable. The owners/ staff were all very helpful and friendly. Would def recommend and stay again
Review 64:The Sunday evening dinner was poor. I asked for an asparagus starter but without the poached egg and I received about 6 short pieces of asparagus with Parmesan . I felt that the chef could have offered an alternative to the egg, or put a little more asparagus on the plate . The main course of rib of beef was fatty meat , offered with seasonal vegetables, but served with potatoes and carrots only. Expensive and disappointimg'
Review 65:Everything about the house and grounds .
Review 66:A couple of cracked tiles on the bathroom floor.
Review 67:The atmosphere when you came through the front door felt just right. A lovely welcome at reception. The room was clean and the bed was the most comfortable hotel bed I have ever slept in. The staff were friendly, food excellent and bar prices good for a hotel.
Review 68:Hotel was very easy to locate on our way south from Scotland. Beautiful setting. Friendly helpful welcome from staff on duty. Food well cooked and tasty, dinner and breakfast. Room a wee bit dated but comfy and peaceful. Short stay did not allow time to discover all this place has to offer.
Review 69:It was a bit hard to find and the rooms weren't that comfy.
Review 70:I really enjoyed having free breakfast and WiFi. The location was also very scenic, centered right on a farm.
Review 71:This hotel is very much in need of refurbishment i payed for an up grade in fact i think i paid for a down grade. i wound not recomend this hotel to anyone we only stayed one night as that was more than enough but had booked for four nights.
Review 72:Beautiful room in main house, very well furnished and surprisingly warm given the house is Georgian. Really helpful, friendly staff who were polite and welcoming. We enjoyed a delicious three course dinner and breakfast was lovely.
Review 73:Very comfortable rooms and staff were very helpful. Food was very good value for money and plenty choice. Lovely relaxing short break. Will be visiting again.
Review 74:big room so took a while to warm up but not really a dislike :-)
Review 75:friendly, comfortable, good choice for dinner & breakfast. Mum & daughter stayed for one night
Review 76:Wi-Fi be of a nuisance, but survived.
Review 77:staff were very friendly, and helpful, answered all my questions with a positive attitude . had dinner and breakfast, all of which could not be faulted. was no problem with late check out. all in all had very good stay
Review 78:Not so much a dislike, more a feeling of unease about the minimal maintenance of our room over a three-day period.
Review 79:The friendly staff, the good quality food (albeit with repetitive vegetables) and the quiet location.
Review 80:Rooms a little sung and no plug socket (e.g. for hair straighteners) near the dressing table!
Review 81:Very impressed by the restaurant - cosy and relaxing, a lovely atmosphere - and by the quality of the food - breakfast was particularly excellent. Well-appointed bathroom and great shower. Also loved the cute Marshall Meadows teddy bear on the bed;-) Took him home for £10!
Review 82:Staff approach was a bit hit and miss. We arrived just after 2pm and noticed in the evening that the welcome guide said we should have been offered a complimentary coffee or tea on arrival. Ordered a paper for Saturday. Initially told it was late but then it never came at all.
Review 83:The lounge and bar were lovely and relaxing with an open fire in the bar adding to the comfort. It was possible to join the coastal path approx 100 yards from the hotel which allowed some beautiful views of the coast whilst walking
Review 84:Not a lot...although the bathroom was a bit dated but immaculately clean. There was also a dog barking in a room adjacent but fortunately it stopped in time for us to enjoy a good nights sleep.
Review 85:Arriving in the dark and opening the curtains the next morning to see the sea, the comfortable, clean room, the very friendly, efficient staff, tea and shortbread on arrival and the wonderful breakfast.
Review 86:not enough staff at times bedroom we had was in need of good dust/hoover, several lights were out and had to ask for bulb so my partner could read via her bedside lamp. Also party in conservatory on our first night was rather loud as we tried to sleep ( ROOM 5 )
Review 87:food was good wine selection good nice surroundings staff helpful
Review 88:Two negatives, which won't apply for most guests - for people travelling by train or bus seeking accommodation in Berwick-upon-Tweed the hotel is a long way from the town. If you're driving that won't be an issue. Secondly, I had mentioned when I booked that I preferred vegan options for breakfast. No arrangements had been made for that.
Review 89:I enjoyed my brief stay at Marshall Meadows. The room was very roomy and comfortable, and the service from management and staff was friendly and professional. Despite being just off the A1 (down a longish driveway) there was no road noise - pleasantly quiet.
Review 90:Lovely welcome when we arrived. Staff very friendly and pleasant but also very professional. Room very comfortable and clean. Evening meal was really good, Especially as it was for a party of 14. Large choice at breakfast. Would definitely stay again and recommend the hotel to friends.
Review 91:Some decor in certain rooms a tad out dated but the comfort, accessories and cleanliness more than made up for this minor complaint.
Review 92:Excellent host, superb building, terrific service and good food.
Review 93:Didn't like my evening meal as the pasta was cool I like piping hot food. The water was cold on Sunday when I had a shower early in the morning, it was normally lovely and hot. Some of the furniture in the room was a bit worn and needs replaced.
Review 94:I enjoyed the cooked breakfast plenty choice and good service. Room was nice, bright and roomy. The staff gave us tea and milk as we don't drink fruit teas or coffee for our room which was a nice touch. Very pleasant staff who were never to busy to offer assistance.
Review 95:We thought that the hotel could do with a little t.l.c. Some of the furniture could have been a bit more in keeping with the 'Country House' style and our furniture in our bedroom had a couple of defects. That said, we enjoyed our stay tremendously and would certainly visit again.
Review 96:excellent staff, very efficient and friendly. The food was particularly good, the dinners were as good as we have had anywhere. Compliments to the chef. The overall friendliness of the hotel was lovely.
Review 97:Hair dryer was one of these old boxes on the wall that blows out air. Not terribly effective...so I would advise you take your own!
Review 98:This hotel is in beautiful surroundings. The room was equipped with all the necessaries I would expect. Room decor was lovely and in keeping with the building. I arrived a lot later than expected due to road delays and poor weather. The proprietor ensured that a sandwich was readied for my arrival at 23:20hrs! These little actions make such a difference.
Review 99:There was nothing I didn't like.
Review 100:A lovely setting in its own extensive grounds. The rooms were pleasant and comfortable and the breakfast was very good. The manager was most pleasant and helpful. A nice bar area rounded things off nicely.
Review 101:Nothing!
Review 102:Great looking period building set in lovely grounds. Very helpful & friendly staff. Changing the restaurant menu daily meant no need to go off site to obtain good quality food. Would visit again when in the area.
Review 103:Despite requesting a room close to access for medical equipment we were located up two flights of stairs and furthest room from any access door. Poor girl on reception helped with our bags and seemed to do everything else around the hotel, noticed by all the guests.
Review 104:Location and surroundings Good sized room and bathroom clean. Hearty breakfast.
Review 105:The navigation system has the location wrong by 100 yards. Not well marked.
Review 106:Huge well decorated rooms, very comfortable and clean, wonderful service, best food in England, unique ground on the border so you can walk across the line into Scotland. Perfect for weddings.
Review 107:As the bar was full for our pre-dinner drinks, we sat in a most beautiful sitting room, where we felt we had to whisper, as it was so quiet! Perhaps a little background classical music here would help?
Review 108:Locating this fine old building in thick fog proved well worth the short-lived difficulty. A warm welcome, delicious food and comfortable rooms delighted us; and we enjoyed walking to Scotland in the morning!
Review 109:Very basic room. Mattress poor, bed creaked. Sink would'nt hold water. Bedside light inop. Tiny shower, why when bathroom had miles of empty space. Food, very poor value for money and the breakfast was a disgrace. Dreadful
Review 110:Quiet.
Review 111:I cannot think of anything to criticise.
Review 112:We arrived tired and had a lovely unwinding drink on the terrace overlooking the croquet/football lawn. The elegant room overlooked the gardens and there was lashings of hot water. I had fresh Eyemouth prawns (actually languostines) followed by really juicy venison, and a wonderful kipper next morning. I think this is one of the best hotels I have ever stayed in.
Review 113:The staff was extremely accommodating and friendly, towards both me and my dog. Perfect relaxing country break with access to stunning walking trails. Great food and drink at the hotel restaurant as well.
Review 114:Wonderful old building, full of character. Staff very friendly and helpful and food was wonderful. A great location for exploring the Borders and Scotland. Eyemouth and St Abbs are only a short drive away and well worth a visit.
Review 115:My wife spotted that the bedroom and bathroom were dirty (dust, hairs etc.) and the mattress in particular was severely stained - uurgghh! Also the young ladies serving breakfast were EXTREMELY curt and grumpy for some un-Godly reason...
Review 116:Erm - most aspects in terms of ranking the appropriate criteria, were "ok", as in fair. i.e. Not good, and not bad!
Review 117:staff very friendly, lovely location, close to historic town Berwick upon Tweed which is a lovely area. Great golf courses in area, especially Goswick - a great links course.
Review 118:Some fixtures and fittings a bit cheap and nasty and out of character with the true style of the place.
Review 119:Setting, building, almost everything. Wish we'd booked dinner as it would probably have been better than the mean out we had!
Review 120:Evening meals a bit expensive TV rather small
Review 121:Room was furnished well Room was a good size Excellent large bathroom Good choice of breakfasts Friendly & helpful staff
Review 122:Signs of damp and worn upholstery speak more to a lack of capital than to any real failings. As it is, this hotel is very good value--comfortable, spacious, and gracious, if a bit shabby gentile.
Review 123:This country house has the bones of a five star hotel and lacks only a few coats of paint, some new upholstery, and perhaps a lift. Very attentive staff. Good amenities.
Review 124:We were given the best room available on arrival, not what we thought we had booked for, the room was at the back of the building and the smallest.
Review 125:That the staff were friendly and approachable.
Review 126:Not enough staff on duty and no one able to change the barrel when the larger ran out.
Review 127:Location, garden looked beautiful. Staff very friendly and helpful.
Review 128:Dinner was poor and expensive breakfast cold tea undrinkable did not even get what was ordered a very tired and outdated hotel charging top prices
Review 129:Nothing
Review 130:The fact that we could only spare three days to stay there! :-)
Review 131:Beautiful setting, very quiet; excellent dining facilities. Staff very amenable including offering use of email checking facilities.
