Reviews for Hotel Saint Etienne
Review 1:The carpet is old and dirty so bring shower shoes or slippers. The biggest complaint I have is the hotel would not accept my payment because I was using a 100 Euro note. My bill was approximately 105 euro and i tried to pay with a 100 Euro note which the receptionist refused. It's hard for me to understand or empathize at how one refuses payment because they don't like the 100 euro note. At any rate, it was inconvenient and frustrating as I had a train to catch. This incident alone, compels me to make the recommendation to others that you stay someplace with more professional and business- minded philosophy so that you don't have to deal with this silliness. It's Euro, for goodness sake.
Review 2:The location is about a 30 minute walk from the train station or just hop on the tram for about 1.50 euro and it cuts your travel time down to 10 minutes. So location is pretty good. It's quiet and near some of the bars and restaurants. But also easily reachable by the tram. The hotel has great character and the receptionist made arrangements for us to check in outside of the odd check-in hours. If you don't make arrangements, you'll be locked out so be sure to follow-up on check in time and procedures. The room was clean, though very dated. But it was cozy and the shower and toilet worked perfectly. The bed was fair and pillows were okay and I had a great view with a room on the corner. The room also included shampoo and soap, As well as towels. The receptionist was helpful in determining an itinerary and offered useful suggestions . They also have a very small library with some travel books, including Rick Steves, that you can borrow while visiting. This was great! The breakfast was fair and included bread, croissants, jams and yogurt and coffee/ tea plus juice. Overall this place is a value if you just need a place to sleep and base yourself while visiting Normandy.
Review 3:Hard to fault as is so very cheap... but room was very smalll... one side of double bed against wall, so only way to bathroom is over your partner! Parking was a challenge (limited opportunities, but that is no fault of hotel.
Review 4:Super central location. Clean sheets and bathroom. Tatty but quite charming. Friendly young man on reception.
Review 5:Maybe it's time to replace the carpet.
Review 6:It is like the hotels I stayed in about 30 years ago when I was getting to know France as a poor student. Our ground floor room was surprisingly quiet and had plenty of charm from long past decades.
Review 7:Difficult to find as down lots of one way streets . Without the help of two very helpful French ladies we would have been driving around Caen for a long time .
Review 8:Lovely staff and very quaint.
Review 9:No on site parking but is available in modern parking garage 2 blocks away for very small fee. 30mins to Normandy beaches.
Review 10:Friendly helpful staff very clean basic room very close walk to abbey, 6 blocks to caen castle and restaurant shopping area. Overall great value for facilities and location. Did not get breakfast but regretted it because it smelled great!
Review 11:We were a family of 4 adults and shared a double room with private bathroom on the ground floor. The hotel is within walking distance of the town .Old but clean and comfortable we had a good night's sleep and the continental breakfast was plentiful and varied. The staff are friendly and helpful - Abdul advised us on parking and we found free parking at the top of the road. Wifi is iffy but works at reception. If you are looking for a good budget hotel then look no further.
Review 12:It's been a long time since the bed was up against the wall. The room s are small as are the bathrooms. This is really for backpackers and at €59 it's poor value
Review 13:Well located. Reasonable parking available on street
Review 14:Located just off the tram that travels through town is a little Gem of a Hotel St Etienne I asked for the attic room but they moved me to a private entrance located on the main floor when they heard i had a twisted ankle. Friendly staff helped me locate the tours i was looking for and directed me to a great French Restaurant located nearby.
Review 15:No staff was there as we're arriving one hour earlier than expected, even if it said on signs that reception should be open.
Review 16:Clean and nice, even if it was old and not refurbished in many years. Good price and value for many. Very good wifi connection.
Review 17:We only saw the staff once. When we had questions, they talked to us through a buzzer on the door and wouldnt even let us in the main building; told us "too bad it's the weekend, we won't fix it till Monday". Check in is after 5.. very odd
Review 18:One of best small Hotels we ever visited. Really great hotel staff Really clean No problem with WiFi signal in whole building Really hudge bed Room in french style Close to city center and castle
Review 19:The bed was comfy but sleep evaded both of us due to the awful pillows .. synthetic, lumpy & small! Please get some feather & down ones .. most people would pay a bit more for a comfy bed/ pillows.
Review 20:Location & character of the hotel are great. We had a very small room with twin beds, really the room was a single size but adequate just for a night or maybe two
Review 21:Area was not what we expected. Arriving late at night, alley entrance and no lights. Access code to get in didn't work and our room did not have a number on it.
Review 22:Clean and room size not bad.
Review 23:No office open between 12 noon and 5....make sure you let them know if arriving during that period and they will be there. No coffee or tea in room. WiFi weak.
Review 24:Hotel is very old but so is this historic area of Caen. You really feel you are in France. Very close to the castle, cathedrals, and shopping square with historic buildings, cobblestone streets and alleys.....pastry shops, pubs! Loved it. Buses are 1/2 block away. If you like authentic French historic surroundings, then this is the place to be. Breakfast was good here too. Only negative is that there was no coffee or tea in room....but available through office for a cost.
Review 25:Rubbish wifi.
Review 26:If all you need is somewhere to sleep this is fine. The beds arecomfortable and the room is clean. It is an old building and thereforesome things can be a bit unusual, such as the room opening onto thestreet, but that can be seen as part of the charm of this hotel. Thereis not much around the hotel, but we could find somewhere to eat.Breakfast the next morning was typical French fare ie: croissant, bread, orange juice, coffee etc (7 euro p/p) quite adequate.
Review 27:Nothing, apart from the breakfast being served in the reception area
Review 28:Abdul, the young man on reception; so welcoming & seemed to do everything, from serving breakfast to cleaning the rooms. Charming & so helpful with directions, bus routes etc.
Review 29:Originally it took us a long time to find, but that was all my fault (too busy looking around). Excellent location, just a block or two from cafés and shopping. Three blocks from Chateau Caen and the transportation hub surrounding it.
Review 30:The wifi was bad, it wouldn't accept the password and the connection broke all the time. Only the last morning it worked when I logged in really early in the morning.
Review 31:Staff was great and room was very clean. The college student who ran the front desk was very helpful on locations around the city. His English is excellent so there were no language barriers. Hotel is older and the double room was small but it was very clean.
Review 32:a bit pricey for the room but it was high season and several events were going on in the area
Review 33:Great location; homey environment; helpful staff who spoke excellent English
Review 34:Nothing negative to say.
Review 35:Location was great. Room was very spacious for our family. The college student that tended the hotel on the weekend was very gracious. He served breakfast to us and another couple at 5:45 am because we were running a race that morning. When I had difficulty retrieving my car at the parking garage (due to language barrier), he took care of it for me, including phone calls and accompanying me to retrieve the car. He was an excellent host.
Review 36:hotel not manned for a large majority of time, was unmanned Saturday afternoon and I was not able to get help arranging a taxi (which is a nightmare in Caen) Can hear revellers walk by to / from the bars A little intimidating on my own in this area which was close enough to shops but involved walking quiet streets / backstreets lack of local information (such as there are no taxi ranks!) bathroom VERY small, difficult to move around in if I'm honest!
Review 37:small hotel, cosy feel when I did meet the hotelier he was very friendly and helpful maid service was excellent lovely flower baskets on the outside window sill
Review 38:Rien
Review 39:Tout
Review 40:Everything fine

Review 53:wi-fi did not work. Old dirty carpet. Felt dusty
Review 54:the hotel was right in the middle of town and you could walk to everything. the hotel was quaint and welcoming, something right out of an old movie.
Review 55:Was a bit small but no complaints
Review 56:The location was very nice
Review 57:Once again your service was great and your prices where good. Special thanks for arranging the early Marathon breakfast! See you next year!
Review 58:Wifi was very slow.
Review 59:The authenticity of historic charm of the rooms.
Review 60:Very friendly and helpful service Comfortable bed and heavy curtains to block out daylight
Review 61:Size of room

Review 70:Near Tramway for easy access to centre and train station.
Review 71:Great staff, very helpful.
Review 72:Great old hotel with fantastic ambiance in a good location to all the local amenities. The manager was very nice and spoke excellent English.
Review 73:Nothing really.
Review 74:IT'S AN OLD FASHIOND HOTEL AND MUCH BETTER THAN FORMULA TYPE PLACES.
Review 75:internet was very poor.
Review 76:Location
Review 77:Very small bathroom Wifi unusable Difficult to find parking
Review 78:Good location Very comfortable beds Clean
Review 79:A little bit of late night noise as we had a ground floor room
Review 80:A good functional family room and just what we needed.
Review 81:smelled a bit musty
Review 82:centrally located, comfortable beds, hot and powerful shower. Clean room
Review 83:The staff, the location and the ambience.
Review 84:The double room is a bit little for two adults and a two years old child.
Review 85:Very good location, kind staff.
Review 86:Stairs...but the view from the top floor was wonderful
Review 87:Lot of noise on the first night Not very clean Wifi was terrible Room was small and outdated, but functional
Review 88:Close to the centre Friendly staff Cheap
Review 89:With the room we got, with a separate entrance from the street, we could not reach the wifi. The staff asked about this when we checked out, so I guess they were aware and might improve this.
Review 90:Perfect location in an old and very beautiful part of the city. Close to the city centre, but on a calm street. The staff was great and the room was nice, we got a room with a private entrance from the street which was really nice. We arrived late at night and called the hotel about it, it was no problem at all and it all went smooth.
Review 91:One traveler could get slow wifi connected, but we never could get connected.
Review 92:Quaint rooms, helpful staff, good location, very clean. Liked it very much!
Review 93:Room a bit small, would have liked an English channel on the television but, hey, this is a minor point on a visit to Normandy.
Review 94:Superb hosts, English spoken but patient to help us with our French. Helpful with organisation, superb old building in the old part of town, old staircase, great for Caen center, eateries and shopping, about thirty minutes walk from station and easily found, super continental breakfast with plenty of food and all guests eating on the one table, good fun, good value. Flowers in window boxes, a real period place.
Review 95:Others have mentioned, the walls are indeed very thin and you will hear any movement or sound in the halls or other rooms.
Review 96:It's everything you can ask for in a budget hotel, no disqualifying issues, and the old building is rather charming. The rooms have a snug, lived in sort of comfort to them. All that and you can't beat the price, I'd stay there again. Tip: Take a left out of the Hotel then a left around the corner. Follow the main road to the end and you'll find a Subway and a nice Kebab place that won't break your budget. Head right toward the castle, and there's also a Quickie burger, also reasonably priced.
Review 97:The Hotel is small, so there are not too many people. Breakfast is great. Being small, there are only a few people for breakfast and you get a good chance to interact with people. It feels like a family environment.
Review 98:Exceptionally noisy outside screaming and shouting til the early hours. Heating didn't really get hot until I was leaving the next morning.
Review 99:Location was spot on
Review 100:we stayed in the nightmarish box we were put for 10 minutes only - couldn't bear to stay longer in that wretched place - the entrance door was 1 meter 10 centimeters high, the furniture was the dirtiest, most wretched pieces we had ever seen (plastic tablecloth on a table about to fall apart) - and everything so dirty and gloomy we didn't even want to touch it - it ruined our first night in Caen! stay away from it!!!
Review 101:Dirty towels. Old and ugly decoration. Needs renovation! Wallpaper hanging from the wall. Flies and mosquitos in the room, when we arrived. Poor wi-fi signal, lost and found in different places in the room.
Review 102:Walking distance to the center.
Review 103:Nothing. Our stay was first class.
Review 104:The staff were very welcoming and most helpful. The rooms had character and it was located on a beautiful street in the heart of Caen.
Review 105:everything!!! The bedrooms dark and dingy. En-suite very poor with a broken plastic concertina door like out of a static caravan. refused to sleep there and found alternative hotel and paid again but well worth it!!!
Review 106:wifi didn't work from the room, had to go to the reception area. the hotel is in a very old building, room smelled a bit damp.
Review 107:We got room 1, a quadruple room, which is separate from the rest of the hotel. no parking, but we could park on the street, which was free from 7pm to 9am. cheap option to stay for a night in the region, but if you can afford, Bayeux has more to offer.
Review 108:Lock on door was a bit temperamental.
Review 109:The helpful and professional greeting from the receptionist. The family room was quaint and had very comfortable beds for all four family members. A traditional old French hotel in the old part of city. Great one night stay.
Review 110:Rooms were small and the ensuite facilities very narrow (for us slightly larger people!)
Review 111:The young man on reception was very friendly and helpful. The breakfast was fabulous!
Review 112:Great value for money but avoid Stadium bar round the corner miserable and charge extra for coffee after 9pm and short change you! Montmontmarte Bar fantastic just 20 yards away!
Review 113:The room was right next to reception and the window opened straight on to the street so there were people going past the window and door most of the time. It's only a side street and not a bustling reception, but all the same, it wasn't the most peaceful of rooms. Only one of the two lights over the bed worked and it was too bright for a bedside light.
Review 114:The hotel is full of character, just right for a taste of old Caen on a budget. Easy walking distance to the bar/restaurant/shopping district between the Chateau and the Abbaye aux Hommes, two minutes walk to bus stops for frequent services to all parts of Caen. Comfortable room in which nearly everything worked.
Review 115:Rooms were small. Staff spoke very little English except for night person who spoke excellent English. Hotel was old and "worn" looking.
Review 116:Rooms were clean. Centrally located.
Review 117:The Wifi was not the best
Review 118:Very nice rooms and Staff. It is really close to the train station in town and is located in the heart of Caen. So far best hotel we have stayed at. PS if you can, request room 1. By far the best room.
Review 119:This hotel is great value for money. The hotel owner and staff are very friendly and helpful. The location is in the old town which is really pretty and it doesn't take too long to walk into town. Would highly recommend staying here.
Review 120:Very outdated, hence the reasonable price. Hotel needs a much needed modernised update. Bathroom too small, shower fixture was broken and folding door was not fitted properly.
Review 121:Shower head was broken, so we had to hold the nossel by hand, and the tv was smaller than my laptop, but we didn't spend a great deal of time in the room anyways.
Review 122:Very friendly and the location was pretty good for the money. Amazing hot water.
Review 123:The room is in dire need of renovation and the front door of room 1 needs to be more secure (accessed from outside).
Review 124:The room was spacious enough for 4 people, the bathroom was clean and we got what we paid for. Location is very good too, close to the centre.
