Reviews for Le Grand Hôtel
Review 1:Not enough tables for everyone to dine comfortably at breakfast. Lounge area closed from 8pm. Breakfast seemed a bit limited in variety.
Review 2:Convenient to the town centre. Modern décor. Free parking on site.
Review 3:Beautiful location, stunning view from our 3rd floor window. A magical setting for a wonderful period hotel. Would go back in a heartbeat! Well worth upgrading to the top floor, just for the view.
Review 4:None
Review 5:We stayed at the Grand Hotel last year and enjoyed it so much that we returned for three nights. Great room on second floor with our own small balcony to sit out on. Room was clean and well maintained. The jazz-themed breakfast room provided a good cold buffet but could get a bit congested at the coffee dispenser. One wet afternoon we tried the large Jacuzzi in the basement. Wonderful: we recommend it. There are many excellent restaurants very close by and good parking space
Review 6:This hotel has everything going for it but falls over on so many points - there are no hot drink facilities in the room. These could be made available in the spectacular lounge area downstairs but this is locked at 8 p.m. which is a shame because, given the tiny claustrophobic nature of the bedroom, we would like to have sat and read there in the evenings.
Review 7:Location and price were great - this is an old fashioned Victorian hotel right in the heart of Le Mont Dore.
Review 8:The hotel is situated next to the Casino and tipping out time is 3am, so the punters from the Casino are very noisy. It was very hot I the night, so unfortunately for us, we had to have the windows open, therefore getting woken each night at the same time. The breakfast room is very small and when it's busy can be quite oppressing. Breakfast itself was adaquate.
Review 9:Location, price, staff and the decoration of the hotel itself.
Review 10:Charming hotel centrally located in Mont Dore. The couple running the hotel were very helpful advising us on what to visit in the region, where to eat in Mont Dore etc. We had a family room split in 2 sleeping areas. Rooms were clean and comfortable. Great value overall.
Review 11:Another brilliant stay at the Grand Hotel. This time staying in summer for cycling. Auvergne is the 3rd highest mountain range in France and ideal if you are not quite ready for the 20 km style climbs of the Alps or Pyrenees. All the "must do" Auvergne climbs are on your doorstep if you stay at Grand Hotel. Col de la Croix Saint Robert, Col de La Croix Morand, Col de Guery, Chastreix Sancy from La Bourboule (via La Stele), Col de la Geneste, Col de la Soeur, La Banne d'Ordanche...
Review 12:Being an old building, it lacks what most travellers expect these days, like a lift, air conditioning and a modern bathroom. Although we had a larger room, it was really two adjacent rooms with old furniture and a very odd bathroom arrangement with the shower in the separate tower.
Review 13:Helpful staff. Hotel is well positioned in the centre of town and does have private, if limited on site parking. Poor English translations in the information folder were hilarious - pepper your passage????
Review 14:I booked a suite. Got two very small bedrooms with an adjoining door. So small no room for bedside tables.Very windy stone staircase with no lift. One person on duty and she left early evening after which the lounge was locked. We were on the first floor. Oldies like us on the third floor were having problems.
Review 15:Excellent location right in the centre of Le Mont Dore with free on site parking.
Review 16:The location and the ease of parking. The wonderful staff. The great bedroom and, most importantly, the comfortable bed for two people with bad backs. This made for a good night's sleep. The amazing value for money.
Review 17:Have patience with the hot water in the shower - it takes some time to reach the second floor!
Review 18:We were pleasantly surprised by the condition of the property, the amenities, great breakfast and the friendliness of the staff. The pictures did not aptly represent what we saw - it was much nicer. A beautiful place to stay nestled in the mountains. Highly recommended!
Review 19:It was quite noisy on occasions but that's understandable with lots of guests moving around the hotel at night. Also we will book a larger room next time which is not a criticism of the hotel, just our experience
Review 20:The Hotel owners and staff were delightful. The position is very good and you can drive to the slopes in 5 minutes.
Review 21:Really ideal location, about 10mins walk from station and v central for restaurants, shops and the free naïveté to the slopes. Friendly welcome, lovely room although not quite enough storage. Generous breakfast. Spa great vfm. Would definitely stay here again.
Review 22:Always a pleasure to stay at the grand hotel. The staff are very helpful and friendly. The location is perfect for a ski trip (the bus shuttle to the ski slope stops right in front of the hotel) and it is a very nice building with comfortable and warm rooms Just a little recommendation. If snowfall is on the forecast do not park in the hotel car park. It is a reasonably big car park and if your car is stuck in under 1 or 2 foot of snow you won't be able to shovel your way out. You will need to wait for the council snow plough to clear a way out and obviously clearing private car parks is not their first priority as other people are stuck on the roads or in ditches so you could have to wait 24 hours or more for the place to be cleared (quite stressful wait when your holiday is coming to an end and you must leave). There are plenty of alternative parking just 50 metres away in front of the post office and that parking is a public car park so the snow get cleared much quicker
Review 23:The stairs to the top floor were hard going, especially after a day on the ski slopes. But good exercise and they were a decent size rather than being small and awkward.
Review 24:Quadruple room split into 2 separate sleeping areas. Balcony over looking the town which was pretty with the snow and festive lights. Rooms were nice and warm. Staff always friendly and cheerful.
Review 25:No lift. Mattress uncomfortable. Strange bed-heads and wall lamp fittings, very small bathroom, very poor shower head. No bar or restaurant.
Review 26:Location. Stunning scenery.
Review 27:No lift - not a negative for us and those younger
Review 28:Warm friendly welcome and helpful at all times. Superb location in the centre but amazingly on site parking and a good sized pleasant garden. A wonderful period exterior facade - we took a few photos.
Review 29:We could manage the stairs OK but there is no lift and we were on the third floor! The WiFi was intermittent and didn't work consistently - you need patience but this shouldn't be a deal breaker. Our shower worked OK but does need maintenance and/or a bit of an update. However pros well outweigh cons
Review 30:Super view from room as requested, very friendly and accommodating owners, room very spacious with additional sitting room, bed v good, 2xTVs ( all French channels), central in Mont D'Ore with access to many dining places with v interesting menus (esp if you like cheese!), breakfast self service reasonable, free parking on site, pleasant garden to sit in if sun is out. Price very reasonable
Review 31:Very little. We had to walk up a spiral staircase to our third floor room. Fortunately we are fit but it could be a daunting climb for some.
Review 32:We loved the grand opulent exterior; it was like going back in time to the Edwardian era. The interior was less ornate but pleasantly comfortable. Our room was spacious but was on the third floor with a dormer type ceiling: you had to be careful not to bump your head when getting out of bed. The lady on reception was most welcoming and helpful. We found the continental-style buffet breakfast to be adequate for our needs. The hotel was very quiet so we slept well.
Review 33:Room on top floor and no elevator. When we went for breakfast the breakfast room was like a zoo with loads of people buzzing around--not very pleasant but perhaps we were just unlucky with the timing
Review 34:Location. Right in the heart of the town. The accommodation was good-bedroom and separate sitting room. Reception desk was friendly.
Review 35:There is no elevator, so we were glad our luggage was no heavier as we carried it up 3 flights of stairs.
Review 36:The Grand Hotel is an old building which has been selectively updated. The round turret in the corner of our family suite has been converted to a shower. The rooms were spacious and bright. There are nice views of the town from the upper floors. Rooms were clean, staff were pleasant and helpful, free parking on site.
Review 37:Cozy hotel. Small wellness section is perfect to finish the day after the climbing. Many excursion opportunity in the neighbourhood. Perfect value for money.
Review 38:Mont Le Dore was asleep when we stayed there during first week of July.Half of the restaurants were closed and the Mountain Railway not running.
Review 39:Classic old building, very friendly and helpful management, easy car parking on site.
Review 40:Leaving!!
Review 41:The hotel is situated in the centre of the town with parking. The staff and owners were courteous and friendly , the room was very clean and decorated in a charming way that complimented the beautiful building. Thank you for a great stay .
Review 42:No complaints at all.
Review 43:Arrived at the hotel after a 4hr drive, to be met by friendly and helpful receptionist. Our room was spotless, nicely decorated and with lovely panoramic views. Bed really comfortable. Continental breakfast was very good.
Review 44:The main bed was a bit soft and the mattress probably needs replacing. There isn't a lift which didn't bother us too much but it might be difficult for some people.
Review 45:This hotel is centrally located in the town of Le Mont Dore. We had a family room on the second floor and in the corner so the main room had two large windows, the shower in the turret, and the children had a separate room with a large window and couches/coffee table. It was a great space for the price. It was absolutely spotless/well cleaned. The building itself is gorgeous and the inner staircase beautiful. The blonde lady working in reception was delightful and provided outstanding service despite having limited English. She recommended some excellent restaurants and called to make the reservations on our behalf. We did some amazing hikes. Overall a terrific experience.

Review 94:No tea or coffee making facilities
Review 95:Nice place to stay, friendly and helpful staff.
Review 96:Very good value for money; very competent and polite stuff; the hotel itself is not new, however, in a very good state.
Review 97:Room clean but musty-type smell.
Review 98:Traditional hotel. Friendly welcome - the best. Delicious croissants for breakfast. Large room (paid extra).

Review 100:Location,free parking,good wifi,friendly owners,good breakfast
Review 101:What a cracking little hotel this is. Right in the centre of town with a warm welcome from the very friendly hotelier. Perfect!
Review 102:Basic breakfast but was OK.
Review 103:Good location in the centre. Arrived on a motorcycle and found good safe parking. Friendly receptionists. Good restaurants all within walking distance.
Review 104:No lift. Had to walk to 3rd floor but we refused help with bags so no complaints there. Very minor issue for us but if you can't manage stairs ask for the ground floor.
Review 105:Ideal location in the centre of town. Very charming with all the comforts necessary and superb views from the balcony. Staff very helpful and friendly.
Review 106:Some of the corner rooms have their bathrooms in a circular extension. Apparently they were unable to fit a standard shower in there; as a result the plumbing and hygiene leave a bit to be desired.
Review 107:Firm mattress, availability of the staff, great mountain views, central location in town, (just) enough parking spaces on site.
Review 108:the bread at breakfast was the ready cheap frozen stuff that you find in collectivity catering, a bit of nice freshly baked baguette wouldn't have been missed, they are lots of bakers in the town.
Review 109:everything was very good
Review 110:Nothing
Review 111:Everything was excellent. Staff and owners so helpful and friendly. Breakfast was great n the best location. Very reasonably priced. Definite place to stay if in mont Dore and to ski.
Review 112:Room sparsely furnished, but not really a problem.
Review 113:No frills but spotlessly clean -towels changed daily. Breakfast good. Friendly atmosphere. Good, quiet location in centre of town. Free parking on site. Plenty of restaurants within easy walking distance.
Review 114:There was no lift. Possibly the coordinates provided might be checked, we ended up a block away.
Review 115:Very traditional hotel with its own parking, convenient to centre of town. Our room was well sized with the bonus of a small dressing area. The breakfast was very good.
Review 116:The staff were so friendly and even with no English from them and very little French from us, we managed to communicate well. Lovely people. As we plumped for a suite, our room was on the top floor. There are no lifts so pack light, however this was no problem for us as we knew in advance what to expect. The room has wooden floors so is a bit echo-ey but on the whole very comfortable in past grandeur kind of way. Don't expect modern furniture, decore and fittings; this is an old building and there is flakey paint and the shower does grumble a bit but it just adds to the character and we loved it. Breakfast buffet was superb, plentiful and with the usual continental fare of breads, pastries, cheese, ham & juices. Beautiful freshly ground coffee from the machine, none of that instant muck. Town centre location was excellent and free parking available although I suspect limited in busier times. We would stay here again in a heartbeat!
Review 117:the building and internals are very appealing. on site parking. loverly and usable garden. great location. free wifi. right in the centre of le mont dore. although little english spoken, staff very friendly.
Review 118:Hot water not hot enough to brew tea at buffet breakfast (common problem in French hotels, so this was not a surprise).
Review 119:Elegant and charming building ith pleasant garden. Quiet room. Clean. Comfortable bed. Friendly staff. Nice, central location. Safe parking for motorcycles.
Review 120:Not enough storage space. No way of making a drink. This didn't bother us but you should know that there is no lift at this hotel which could be a problem for some.
Review 121:Hotel was basic but adequate with parking on site. Breakfast buffet was fine although had to be paid for as an extra. Free WiFi always worked.
