Reviews for Chateau de Cavanac

Review 1:This hotel is excellent in every way, extremely nice friendly staff, amazing food and very comfortable accommodation with very good Wi-Fi. This 17th century chateau is really interesting and truly remarkable. We will definitely be returning.

Review 2:It was very difficult for us to locate. Old fashion hospitality but very nice. Needs some work to upgrade it.

Review 3:The pool, the afternoon tea outside and the staff were friendly. Unfortunately the restaurant wasn't open and so we had to drive to find somewhere to eat & we had been driving all day.

Review 4:Nothing to complain about.

Review 5:The faded antique feel of the place despite having modern fittings. The number of facilities and spaces for sitting and congregating. The restaurant with its local produce and wine from the estate.

Review 6:The entrance to the residential building was dilapidated and dirty. We thought it was a service entrance until the receptionist took us back there. We had a problem getting out the secure car park in the dark after retiring from our meal. There was a leak in the old-fashioned bathroom.

Review 7:The room was spacious, the bed was clean and comfortable. The staff were friendly

Review 8:First impressions on arrival initially were not good - it looked like we were going to a factory until we saw the chateau itself which is not that great outside from the approach. The reception area is dingy and a liittle quirky for our taste. We were greeted by a member of staff who seemed to be having to do lots of jobs all at once. We got very little information and were not even shown into our room. It was only on the 3rd night that we discovered in fact there were 2 restaurants!

Review 9:We loved the atmosphere and traditional feel of the hotel. It was exciting to explore and discover the building and what facilities were available. The room was newly refurbished and beautiful. Food was excellent and there was a reduction made for my husbands breakfasts as they had been unable to provide gluten free bread as we had requested on booking.

Review 10:Leaving - we should have stayed another night

Review 11:From the welcoming and attentive staff, the outstanding food and the beautiful accommodation which was full of character and charm - we made and excellent choice and went back for a second visit at the end of our holiday.

Review 12:Nothing..Once we'd found the village!

Review 13:Beautiful old building in a tranquil village setting. Excellent facilities, including an outdoor pool. Lovely restaurant serving traditional French cuisine. The €45 menu is good value as it includes wine. The restaurant is very popular with the locals, which is always a good sign.

Review 14:Dead flies in light holder in toilet. Tired decor and furnishing.

Review 15:Evening Restaurant was superb. Large bedroom but light holder in toilet was full of flies. Bedroom although decorated and furnished in an antique style was tired and could do with freshening up. Breakfast very good but expensive

Review 16:Nothing bad to say.

Review 17:A wonderful location with wonderful facilities. We had a very enjoyable stay (5 Days) at this top quality hotel. Accommodation was excellent, breakfast offered a huge choice. Facilities were excellent and the the restaurant was something not to miss. The staff were extremely friendly and helpful.

Review 18:No Restaurant or any alternative on Monday night. Further out from Carcassone than we thought - 20 Euro cab ride each way

Review 19:Excellent Restaurant & beautifully located swimming pool .Reception staff speak excellent English .Vey comfortable & quiet room

Review 20:The meal in the evening was excellent. The restaurant is very well run as it was busy but the staff coped beautifully. Good varied menu with the food being prepared in front of you. The inclusive drinks were very enticing & generous but perhaps not of the highest quality. We enjoyed the meal thoroughly but were glad we were staying the night! The hotel is old & full of character but perhaps could benefit from being freshened up. Our room was fairly spacious & very comfortable.

Review 21:Would have loved a kettle in the bedroom for cups of tea. View from room, not far reaching, but balcony made private by lush vegetation and tops of flowering bushes, quite pleasant.

Review 22:Ambience and restaurant were very good. Staff very helpful. Room beautiful and huge.

Review 23:The relative darkness in the restaurants, even at breakfast. Sometimes the way the dishes are prepared, notably seafoods were not decorticated, even when cooked.

Review 24:The generous space and nice furnitures of the room, The garden around the swimming-pool and the good size of this latter. The proximity with the subway and Cacassonne.

Review 25:Access to hotel on our arrival was blocked by a village car boot sale The quality of the bread let the breakfast down

Review 26:Rustic old-world charm Excellent restaurant 10 minute drive from Carcassonne

Review 27:The pool area could be tidied up a bit

Review 28:The food is excellent and the chateau is lovely. We have stayed here several times and it is always the same as we remeber it

Review 29:the location was difficult to find, there we no meals and drinks served during the day and nowhere nearby to buy anything. We went in September and it felt like the hotel had closed down. The café by the pool was closed.

Review 30:we liked the chateau and we had a wonderful bedroom.

Review 31:The pool was too cold for us. Also, there was no option not to have your towels changed every day. We preferred not to pay for the breakfast after the first day.

Review 32:Excellent 45 euro menu option for dinner, including the house wine (unlimited). Very friendly staff. Raquets and (slightly old, could do with being more bouncy) tennis balls available to borrow. Beautiful setting. Very quick drive into Carcasonne

Review 33:In thirty years of travel, have never written a negative review.Violently ill within two hours of eating in the restaurant. Indifferentresponse from the manager and refusal to accept responsibility. Trulyappalling experience. Inadequate, insulting refund of 18 euros on a 665final bill. Happy to take your money, but do not really care about theirguests. (See 1-3* reviews on other sites - we are not the first to havehad issues.) Our second stay here, but will never return.

Review 34:Quiet location, 20 mins by car from the airport. Interesting old chateauwith restaurant.

Review 35:Idyllic location - scenic and peaceful surrounds with friendly staff. The building is full of character and the overall experience made us feel special.

Review 36:Further away from carcassonne than expected so must have a car

Review 37:Restaurant for the evening. Accommodation. Friendliness of staff. Beautiful old chateau.

Review 38:They could never get the wifi working despite great effort by staff. Staff welcoming, friendly, and carried bags upstairs--a bonus for bad knees!

Review 39:Old world ambiance in room. Dinner excellent--over the top with the non-stop wine with dinner.

Review 40:In the afternoon,we would have liked somewhere nice to sit to have a drink when we arrived - restaurant being set up for the evening so asked to leave table we found; seating area in courtyard quite busy with staff and deliveries.

Review 41:Grand and bigger than average room. Very good restaurant, lovely outside setting.

Review 42:What's not to like about this stunning location and hotel which was like going back several centuries with 21st century comforts. Would make Marie Antoinette and Louis X1V feel at home. Beautiful room and balcony overlooking a canopy of lush flowering vegetation in the courtyard below. Restaurant is a gourmet's delight and beautiful secluded pool to complete the amazing atmosphere. A must stay and we will be back

Review 43:wifi was a bit of a hassle having to get a new code each day before it could be used. Also nothing else within the village of interest, car was needed at all times . Also had an afternoon at the pool but spoiled due to gardeners behind the hedge starting up diesel machinery. Fumes were black and chocking for around twenty minutes

Review 44:Loved the hotel and staff were very helpful. Quiet with plenty of areas to sit and relax within the grounds

Review 45:Nothing

Review 46:A quintessential french Chateau with traditional, spacious, old fashioned, but opulent, bedrooms, a 10 minute drive from historic (but touristy) Carcasonne. After an afternoon around the beautiful pool we had the 45 euro 4 course dinner menu on the most glorious leafy terrace. It was superb and not just because it icnluded 3 bottles of wine from the chateau's vineyard, an aperitif and a digestive!! Superb. The staff were friendly, incredibly helpful and accommodating.

Review 47:It was a little further away from Carcassonne than I was led to believe from the website and one would definitely need ones own transport.

Review 48:This was a unique and beautiful time warp experience - we loved the old world feel of the place and we felt that the rooms were opulent and authentic - especially as they were a little faded around the edges.

Review 49:The room smelt of cigarette smoke and the bedding was a worn blanket and permanently used bedspread. Did not feel very hygienic or comfortable to sleep in.

Review 50:Charming reception staff & marvellous dinner at the restaurant.

Review 51:Chateau de Cavanac is the best place I've ever stayed in. This is not a usual hotel. This is a real castle where you feel like an inhabitant! The castle is situated in a village surrounded by fields and vineyards a few miles from Carcassonne. On arrival the Hotel upgraded my room. Instead of a standard room I got a two- storey suite with a veranda on a 2nd floor with an access to the private garden. Besides there is a fantastic restaurant of the French Cuisine in the Hotel where the food and wine are extremely testy! The staff of the Hotel is very helpful! I'm going to miss this place!

Review 52:Only thing that bothered me a bit was the wifi connection, which was as good as nonexistent, except at the reception area, so it's kinda difficult if you need to make private calls ( FaceTime ) through your internet. I was staying in the main building of the chateau, so it may be possible that other areas have better connection, I honestly haven't checked.

Review 53:Great location, gorgeous old chateau kept in pristine state, lovely staff! If back in the area, would definitely stay there again, without a doubt! Only 6km or so from Carcassone itself, so it's not far at all if you want to visit the old Cite, but you have the privacy and relaxing moments while staying at the chateau. Secluded swimming pool, not too many guests either, so you always feel you're a bit home, doesn't really feel like staying in a hotel. The restaurant serves great delicious food, you must try the domaine's own wines, the prices are very accessible.

Review 54:Pool bar doesn't open until 5pm so ask the ladies at reception if you want a drink to take down to the pool.

Review 55:Lovely people at reception who made you very welcome. Dinner was superb and well worth the money.

Review 56:A kettle in the room would have made it even better.

Review 57:The location, rooms and building were beautiful. Some people have said that paying for a suite or a walk-in shower is a must-have. We did find this to be so. We had a standard room (large, comfortable, love the decor) and a shower attachment to a bath (great power - what you need to wash long hair!). Hotel had easy access to Carcassonne (15 mins) as well as many other typical sites (Grotte de Limousis; Lastours; Alet-le-Bain; Rennes le Chateau etc). Breakfast was good as long as you do not have any particular requirements (I had to buy own GF bread and goats / sheep dairy despite it being very easy for them to provide as asked for in 'special req' when booking.) In the restaurant, 49 euros for an all-inclusive meal consisting of an aperitif, several huge courses and 3 bottles of wine was exceptional value. However, if you did not want this, you have the a-la-carte option as a hotel guest with 15 euros for a main meal. The restaurant staff were outstanding and were very accommodating. Reception staff were very helpful and all but one were genuinely very friendly (rather than a smiling without the eyes politeness with everything you say being 'prefect'!). We would definitely stay again.

Review 58:The restaurant was shut on the 2nd night we stayed (monday eve) and it was in a VERY rural area and no restaurants within easy reach or bars. We spent 2 hours trying to find somewhere to eat and hotel staff couldn't suggest anywhere.

Review 59:The room was excellent but needed a fridge or mini bar.

Review 60:Having to leave.

Review 61:The restaurant is absolutely wonderful. The selection of food was mouthwatering. We will recommend this venue to all of our friends and family.

Review 62:Good idea to have a look at more than one room before deciding. some of them have slightly low ceilings and not nice asepcts. they were very accommodating about changing us when we raised an issue.

Review 63:It was very hard to find. Directions could be better. When we arrived we were not given any idea of the facilities available or where they are. A better greeting with a map of the grounds and direction to the bar, restaurant, pool etc..would be appreciated.

Review 64:Lovely old Chateau. The room was huge , the restaurant excellent and the whole ambience very enjoyable.

Review 65:Wifi was intermittant and you had to ask for a new code each day and a separate one for each appliance which was rather tiresome. No food or bar available until 5pm which was a problem on the day we wanted to chill out by the pool all day.

Review 66:Food in restaurant was excellent. If you didnt want the fixed price, as a hotel resident, we could order a la carte. 2 courses was enough for us and we have good appetites. Excellent wine list and great recommendations from Frederick

Review 67:Wi if didn't work in the room and you had to get a code from reception every day. On some days no drinks served at the pool.

Review 68:Good room size and very clean Staff friendly and helpful. Pool are nice with plenty of shade. Good quality food.

Review 69:We used bikes and transport needed i.e a car or bike as taxis are quite expensive

Review 70:A gem of a place for the discerning traveller, quiet and relaxing with fabulous food and wine. Not a 5 star faceless hotel but an authentic chateau with beautiful dining areas

Review 71:Not to keen on the shower over the bath - nowhere to hook the shower onto. The wi-fi not brilliant either but that is probably due to the location of this fabulous chateau.

Review 72:The ambience of the chateau was beautiful. The food out of this world - soo delicious. Staff very attentive.

Review 73:Only because the restaurant was so good it is a shame that it shuts on Mondays !

Review 74:The room with the balcony overlooking the restaurant terrace (Oiseaux du Paradis) was truly fantastic as was the in house restaurants offer of 5 courses of wonderful food for 45 eur including house wines that are produced on the estate.

Review 75:I would definitely recommend this chateau as we loved our stay. Front desk staff and management were extremely helpful, welcoming and went out of their way to assist us with unusual requests. Loved the quirky style of the chateau. It has a very old, historic tower, with interesting surrounds. The ambience is grand with a number of fascinating public rooms, art collections and decor, long corridors, a courtyard and lots of nooks and crannies to explore. This is a place where you can wander and enjoy amenities outside of the bedrooms as there are so many public spaces. Rooms were large, comfortable and furnished with character. Nice pool area. Fabulous restaurant. Heaps of secure parking. Situated in a pretty village 10 mins from town and easy to reach by car or taxi. We were very satisfied with all aspects and will return.

Review 76:Large and comfortable room with good facilities, friendly and helpful staff, good breakfast and excellent evening meal . Restaurant has a great ambiance and all inclusive priced meal is really good value for money. Good location for visiting Carcassonne.

Review 77:Everything. The evening meal and inclusive wine (white, rose & red) was wonderful and great value. The staff were very helpful and provided supplies of ice for a swollen ankle with out delay.

Review 78:We were there 2 nights and both days there were functions on, to get to our room we had to walk right through wedding receptions and christenings, wasnt very nice when you are going or coming from the pool

Review 79:We upgraded to the suite which was very spacious but smelled very musty and wet inside.

Review 80:There is nothing to like

Review 81:Far enough away from the City to be very quiet and peaceful, but near enough for a 10 minute taxi ride. The Chateau is on our list of places to return to. Restaurant is superb and accommodating. All in all you will not be disappointed.

Review 82:Wifi connection was very spotty.

Review 83:The best thing about this hotel was the staff! Corine and Natalie were completely delightful in reception, they were both so lovely and so helpful. The setting of the hotel is beautiful and very quiet and peaceful, in a very small village 5 or 10 minutes from Carcassone. The hotel is 17th century, so the stairs and hallways are very creaky and dark. The rooms are large and spacious.

Review 84:Extremely helpful reception who went out of their way to be accomodating. A real sense of the age and history of the building, especially the ancient tower. Large bedrooms decorated in an old style. Excellent restaurant. Chateau situated in a pretty village only tem minutes from Carcassone. Plenty of easy parking. Very pretty grounds and pool. Wonderful public areas with amazing decor, like stepping back in time. This was a visit to remember in terms of the character and ambiance of the chateau. Would definitely recommend.

Review 85:Having access to the Internet during our trip was critical. Upon arrival, we learned that the Internet was down. After reminding the staff of the importance of Internet access multiple times during a 12-hour period, Internet was restored.

Review 86:The dinner was exceptional, and the breakfast options were delicious. The hotel is located near Carcassonne which was a site we visited. The staff members were helpful throughout our stay.

Review 87:The pool wasn't open however it was April and not in summer season. The wifi connection wasn't the strongest and you had to get a new password every 24 hours.

Review 88:The staff and rooms were lovely, in a small town only 10 mins drive from airport. It's quiet and relaxing. The restaurant serves beautiful food.

Review 89:As a Brit a morning cup of tea is essential but no tea making facilities. Trying to find someone in the bar to serve a pre dinner drink.

Review 90:The receptionist was very friendly and helpful. The bed large and very comfortable with enormous bath shower room. As big as some bedrooms. The Restaurant on site is worth the trip on its own.

Review 91:Breakfast should be included in the price. We didn't stay for breakfast, as for same price you can have a 3 course lunch in the nearby town.

Review 92:Exactly what you would expect from a typical French Chateau! Nice, clean room, nice, traditional decor within the dining rooms, bedrooms and lounge. The restaurant was full on Saturday evening, good atmosphere and food. Would recommend to friends!

Review 93:The rooms were magnificent with sumptuous furnishings and antiques. My husband and I were upgraded to a suite, which was the size of a small flat. The rooms occupied by my son and brother were in the main building and reached by a stone helical staircase. Dinner was splendid, with wonderful seafood, including lobster and crayfish.Six courses including amusee bouche and included three bottles of wine from their vineyards.

Review 94:you need a car or taxi to get to Carcassonne as there is no public transport available

Review 95:the restaurant served excellent food at reasonable prices for hotel guests. The hotel rooms were large, very clean and quiet.

Review 96:The property looked a little run down and needs some attention outside. First impression driving up - needs some work. A bit dark in the lobby. The internet was not easy to access.

Review 97:Beautiful, quiet rooms with lots of space. Quiet. The restaurant was a wonderful value for the money, attentive staff at dinner. Breakfast was amazing and the courtesy outstanding. Food presentation was beautiful and inviting. Good value for 12 Euros.

Review 98:Chateau de Cavanac was just amazing, the ambiance, the size of rooms and the situation. The dinner was the highlight of our stay, so much choice of well prepared and cooked food and the reasonably priced but excellent estate wines. We can't wait to go back!

Review 99:Room had a separate toilet (within the room) which did not have an extraction system = smells! very difficult to find staff to serve drinks at the bar at times.

Review 100:The whole set up is great. We wanted a quiet, secluded spot to relax following our wedding. We arrived at 2pm and found a very pleasant reception. The room was in the large chateau part and after reading some reviews saying the further from the reception the worse the room. I was pleasantly suprised, yes it wasn't a suite, and yes it wasn't full of mod cons but then I never expected that! Breakfast was good. Nice variety and although on the more expensive side, we filled ourselves and never really needed lunch. Food in the evening. We are there twice. Both times the food was exceptional. €45pp sounds a lot initially but if you realise it was £35 and includes aperitif, 4 courses, digestif and 3 bottles of wine you cannot complain. Will definitely recommend and go back, may be in the summer months to really appreciate the swimming pool.

Review 101:It's a shame the restaurant shuts on Mondays.

Review 102:Loved the old rustic feel of Chateau, large rooms, friendly staff, delicious food (especially the steak) and the swimming pool is a nice place to relax.

Review 103:Could only manage 2 half bottles of wine!

Review 104:Quiet location in a village 5k south of Carcassonne. Beautifully furnished rooms in an old farmhouse building. Fantastic stable conversion restaurant with lots of character. Where else could one get a 5 course meal including a Kir and 3 bottles of wine for 45 Euros? Lovely relaxed breakfast.

Review 105:Staff delightful, Restaurant extremely good value with a bottle of white, rosé and red included in the price. Our room Anénome has been completely refurbished in the last month. A lovely Chateau making their own wine.Great breakfast with loads of choice if you could manage it after dinner.

Review 106:On arrival, was informed the restaurant was closed that evening, had booked this place out of the city so after long drive could enjoy the restaurant, and the pool, instead asked if we could have a drink by the pool Yes was the answer, so made our way down to the pool, half an hour later walked back to reception to find drinks on the reception desk, receptionist had finished shift, informed by new receptionist , no service available by the pool, no kidding !! so spent Birthday sitting by pool which was clean, bar area closed pool area untidy very end of season, towels, cups and loungers just left from previous day, drank from plastic cups, pool policy no glass, which I understand, however if the hotel intends to charge top dollar for a room there must be some service, apart from another couple who arrived after us the hotel was empty, I am very angry that I wasted my time and money, in fact did not go down to breakfast next day, decided this place had had enough of my money, do not stay here go into the old walled city, where you will find some lovely hotel, with charm atmosphere and good service !

Review 107:The Room we had was spacious and comfortable. The hotel looked great in the pictures..... but

Review 108:The breakfast was good but fairly average in its content. For the price we had anticipated the choice of a cooked dish such as an omelette.

Review 109:The whole experience! The location, ambience and rooms made this very good value for money. We had been upgraded to a family suite and had THREE canopied beds to choose from set within two enormous rooms! The evening meal, although expensive, was excellent and well worth the treat!

Review 110:The venue was let down by the unkempt area around the otherwise very nice swimming pool.

Review 111:The Chateau exuded charm and quality and the food was excellent.

Review 112:Difficult to find and unused sunbed in the sun around the pool, however this is probably an advantage if holidaying at a warmer time of year.

Review 113:Unique and quirky shabby chic decor - not really what I would call a "Chateau" - more of a vintners manor farmhouse. Very comfortable beds. Amazing food and dining areas

Review 114:Food at restaurant was not good. Fois grois was way, way over cooked, sent it back and the 2nd. attempt was even worse, tried to charge me for it but had it removed from the bill. Wouldn't return here.

Review 115:Very spacious room

Review 116:dodgy looking stairwell which made us doubtful about the quality of the hotel when we arrived

Review 117:wonderful dining on the tree-lined terrace in the evenings, superb food and friendly waiters and staff. The all-in menu offer looks expensive at first, but is actually good value - but you do need to be hungry.

Review 118:The only drinks we could get late in the evening were alcoholic, no provision for coffee, tea, or a hot chocolate. No drink provision in our room, to make an early morning tea or coffee.

Review 119:Staying for a birthday treat, we found everything was of a very high standard, including : the atmosphere of the whole place, quiet courtyards, & pool was clean & well maintained. Staff were helpful & friendly, we had a small issue with no towels which was sorted out by the lady on reception bringing us replacements within five minutes of us asking. The breakfast choice was incredible, something to suit everyone, where ever you were from. The set evening meal was amazing, excellent produce, very well cooked & presented. Exceptional value for money, as it included Three Bottles of wine, all of which were all very palatable.

Review 120:Billing system is totally hit and miss and relies on unsigned scraps of paper. 16 euros appeared on my bill which were unattributable to me. I would never recommend a place where this can happen.

Review 121:The restaurant

Review 122:The swimming pool area might have been more up to date, but on the other hand it mustn't lose its character!

Review 123:Eating al fresco with real attention to details of presentation of food. Wide range of choice on the menu. Whilst the accommodation was not de luxe, it was extremely comfortable and nothing seemed to be a problem to the staff. It was a very useful base for visiting Carcassonne, and by chance for meeting up with some friends in the Pyrenees.

Review 124:Self service breakfast not in-keeping with rest of rest of experience but food excellent.

Review 125:Perfect location to visit Carcassonne and surrounding area. Very good food and service in a tranquil setting.

Review 126:Restaurant is not open on mondays, we found that inconvenient after a long days sightseeing to have to go out and find alternative eating arrangements. During the high season (August) we do not understand why "in house" eating is not available to residents.

Review 127:good location but a little difficult to find. very convenient (once you know where you are) for Carcassonne which is only a short drive away. Good food/wine in restaurant.

Review 128:The wifi was hopeless and our room was close to reception so in theoryshould have had good signal.

Review 129:Very welcoming, secure parking in a beautiful setting. The restaurantdinner was wonderful. It seems expensive at 45 euros per person butincludes 4 courses, aperitif and 3 bottles of wine so actually reallygood value.

Review 130:Bathrooms looked a bit tired - but served their purpose. Could not find an obvious alternative to eat nearby - so would have been nice to have a cheaper alternative meal for the evening.

Review 131:Rooms/suites were of a good size. Breakfast and evening meal were very tasty. Staff helpful when you needed assistance. Nice to receive three complimentary bottles of wine with our meal.

Review 132:Not so much didn't like as surprised that asked not to drink wine in rooms?

Review 133:Country house feel! Staff there and helpful when you needed them but not swarming ! Rooms and space super! Felt total privacy . A rural retreat! Food excellent and plentiful supply of local wine included with menu! Wine beside pool excellent value! Charming place to stay! Would go back happily!

Review 134:One could hear the water running through the pipes when neighbours were using it. One room we rented was on a side of the building where it gets hot in summer so not very confortable to sleep in. Three guests made lots of noise in the garden until 2 a.m. withiout anybody to intervene. Despite we travel with children we were not given two adjacent rooms - my son got lost on the corridors trying to find our room (rooms have names, not numbers).

Review 135:Rooms are ok and location is fine for a visit to Carcassone.

The Fine Print

The restaurant is open every evening from Tuesday to Saturday. It is also open on Sunday during the high season.
