Reviews for Chic & Basic Born
Review 1:Amazing hotel! Very interesting design, something different. Very cool for couple. And on our opinion that's the best part of Barcelona to stay in Barcelona. Would love to be back!
Review 2:Location within easy walking distance of the Gothic Quarter and the Port in an area full of small bars and retaurants yet quiet and with a park at the end of the street. Friendliness of staff. Quirky design.
Review 3:Bed was too close to the shower and could have done with a little more lighting.
Review 4:Staff were great! Loved the decor and ambience of the hotel. It's not for everyone as it's not conventional, but that's what I loved about it. I had a spacious balcony room 25 that faced the back of the building so it was quiet and had a little sofa on the balcony. Great for a romantic weekend away and El Born is such a cool area to hang out in.
Review 5:A bit of a weird smell in the room More equipment in the room Outdated brochure in welcome package (wrong wifi credentials
Review 6:Location Friendly and helpful staff Cool lounge area Great cocktails
Review 7:In our room, the window couldn't be opened.
Review 8:Extremely nice staff, as Barcelona first timers they really helped us with everything we needed. Breakfast was very good. Very comfortable lounge with coffee and tea and water. Really great location.
Review 9:Cool design. Weird lightning. Very nice staff (very helpfull). Best location for good food, drinks, boutiqueshops, and walking to the centre! Free bottles of water, coffee & tea.
Review 10:The quirky nature of the décor - all those plastic beaded curtains! Loved the lounge - the endless tea, coffee, bikkies and bottles of water is a great idea & a nice place to relax in between exploring Barcelona.
Review 11:I wasn't a fan of the rope curtains in the hall. Cumbersome to navigate, especially with luggage, and I felt like I had to wash my hands afterward.
Review 12:Location, location, location!
Review 13:No bad experience, but some more toiletries would have been good (we only had one bottle of shower gel for the whole stay) and no shampoo or conditioner.
Review 14:Terrific location and very helpful and friendly staff, especially the lovely young woman from Mexico (whose name we never got!).
Review 15:The neighborhood is good and all and the location is not bad, but could be better
Review 16:Rooms are unique and unorthodox but very convenient and clean. Staff is very friendly. Very quiet and private.
Review 17:Now lets look at things that weren’t as great:First off, nobody says anything about this, but Barcelona smells like sewer. Their sewage system is not fit to be inside a major European and cultural city. Given the fact that this hotel is inside the Old Town (so to speak), where the sewage system is even older and given the fact that the location there is filled with Fish restaurants and based on some historical records, the town council skipped on installing the full system. You get used to it after the first 2-3. Afterwards you only smell it when it gets worse. Another thing is the streets there are small and narrow, so basically the big trash pubellas (trashcans) are sitting right on the street, so you have huge trashcans every 10 meters. Those stank at night when walking past them. Also you have the classical piss smell from people or animals pissing on the street corners and all that.Secondly, the rooms are not as big as they seem in the photos. From what I can see, this building had half fewer rooms, (which were twice bigger) so they sliced the room in half and made 2 rooms. You can see this if you look at the ceiling mosaics. Everything is mirrored and gives you the impression of a huge room, but it’s not that big. If you wanna stay more than a few days, you should pack your stuff well because you'll be living out of your trunk mostly. They do have 2 small boxes and a place that you can hang your clothes, but you only have 5 or so coat hangers ( not sure if you can get more, we haven’t asked ).The balcony is nice, but it’s like half a meter wide and they have those classic wooden frames which ply, so you have to first open them at max and then you can enjoy the balcony.Thirdly, we didn’t like the shower because it didn't have a detachable head, so you're basically stuck with water pouring down from above ( it’s hard washing places where the sun doesn’t shine). Water pressure wasn’t great ( it may vary ).
Review 18:We stayed at Chic & Basic Born in late August/early September 2015 for 10 Days. This review applies to that period of time.First off, the people at the reception were very friendly and knew enough English, so communication was never a problem. We had 2 reservations, a 3-day one and a 7-day one. The 3-day one was in a slightly bigger room (the Double Deluxe with Balcony, while the 7-day one was in a Double Room with Balcony). They were nice enough to let us stay in the big room for our entire 10 days without having to pay extra for that.Breakfast was not included (and this is very clearly written on the reservation), but it was only 9 Euro per person, and given what bars/restaurants you had around you, which we did visit a few times, the breakfast was good and very cost efficient. It was standard Buffet breakfast, with 2 types of ham, salami, cheese, 2 types of bread, croissants, cup-cakes, orange juice and you got a free coffee / cappuccino (you might be able to get more than one free coffee, I don’t know, ask there, if you're the type of person who chains 2-3 coffees at a time). Dining area is not that big, but in the morning and if it’s nice outside you have 5-6 tables outside along with those inside, but its something to consider if you're coming here in mid season. People outside the hotel can get breakfast menu here as well, so you're gonna compete with them. For 9 Euro per person, it was a good choice, nothing groundbreaking but good. The place itself was pretty clean, room cleaning was done daily, and towels and other things were changed often. There was never a chance to run out of toilet paper either (i know, i know but you would be surprised to see how many times that happens even to better hotels). Our room had air conditioning inside the walls, you had a control panel to mess with it, but we just took it off as it wasn’t as hot during the night, and in the day we weren’t staying in the hotel room anyway.
Review 19:Breakfast at €9 each was a but expensive so we opted not to take it but there are plenty of places close by.
Review 20:Everything - staff were super nice and very helpful all had excellent English. The room was very clean and comfortable and the decor was very cool. It was nice to be able to pop down to the chill out room for some tea and coffee and grab our bottle of water every morning and the location was great so many lovely tapas and cocktail bars close by and only 10 minute walk to Las Ramblas and easy to navigate. I would definitely stay here again.
Review 21:A bit small, but the best design of a small room I have ever seen. The shelf in the shower could use some repair. My soap, shampoo, and conditioner were falling to the ground because the shelf was not screwed tight enough, therefore at an angle.
Review 22:Great location, quiet rooms, friendly and accommodating staff, loved the ease of getting in and out of the hotel, fun room lights, chic and modern, wonderful large shower, great products, eco-friendly, great common area with free water, tea, coffee, crackers. I really loved the stay and wish I could have stayed longer!
Review 23:I was shocked that shampoo was not provided and over the course of a 5 night stay, soaps and water bottles were never replenished. Is that too much to ask for? Seriously, for the price paid, I don't think so...
Review 24:The location is excellent and close to great nightlife. The staff was absolutely the best! Super friendly and helpful with sightseeing questions. The lounge area was also nice to grab a cup of coffee.
Review 25:absolutely nothing
Review 26:Very good location, Room decor just gorgeous, lovely staff, the most comfortable bed ever, room where you can get a coffee, free water, free WIFI, everything just perfect!!!
Review 27:shower - hot and cold did not work so well!
Review 28:fantastic staff - everyone warm, friendly, informative, naturally helpful great location - near park, quiet, near great culture, eating, shopping, etc.
Review 29:I requested a wake-up call that I never got. As a result, I had to rush to the airport to catch my flight. I would have rather taken the more relaxed pace I had planned.
Review 30:Smooth check-in and check-out process
Review 31:It was really hot during our stay and the air conditioner in our room didn't work properly. Staff were super helpful and brought a fan to our room while we waited for a technician but the problem was never really fixed. I think there were too many rooms drawing on the power source at once or something as the air temps increased at night, but the room was generally cool during our afternoon siestas when few people were at the hotel.
Review 32:the condition in the room is very basic and the toilet in a tine room, no door for the bathroom.
Review 33:The staff are very kind, location good, and the free corner for caffe tea and water is a great idea.
Review 34:The bathroom amenities were very limited: just 1 soap and 1 shower gel for 2 people for 3 nights. No shampoo, body lotion,.... Very limited storage space
Review 35:Trendy hotel on an excellent location. It was quite warm when we styled in Barcelona, so the free water, coffee and tea were very welcome.
Review 36:The help yourself leitmotiv is way too expensive - the 'basic'' is overpriced and the 'chic' minimal - there are better opportunities price/quality in that area The rooms are also noisy ( those with a terrace overlooking several balconies of the opposite building)
Review 37:Area - very nice and hip neighbourhood Musea in walking distance Good restaurants in the area
Review 38:The steps into the bathroom should have a low light or reflective edge for safety at night.
Review 39:The staff, particularly Anna, great mixed drinks, the restaurant recommendations, and good tourist info.
Review 40:Leaving
Review 41:Location was great. Beautiful surroundings. Good facility's. The cocktails made by Alex in the hotel bar. Tapas next door. Hotel was really quiet. Free tea/coffee/bottled water ice machine in communal area
Review 42:you must consider if you travel with partner with whom you are not close enough - as there is no privacy at all (even toilet door is a bit transparent)
Review 43:That was truly unusual expirience, you would propably not dare to make your own appartment to look like that, but it's nice to stay for several days in such atmosfere. also we loved that you can make coffee/tea, have a biscuit any moment in nice common area (on the 3rd floor, not at the reception) ah! and the last day we rented bycicles and since we took them just for couple of hours guys didn't even charge us for that. and yes, the staff is veeeeery friendly!!!
Review 44:Born is a great neighbourhood to stay in - plenty of good bars and restaurants close by. On the suggestion of a member of staff we visited a restaurant called 'Barceloneta' in Barceloneta. Worth a visit if you love seafood.
Review 45:The common areas in this hotel, complete with free tea and coffee and reasonably priced drinks, are really excellent. The staff are great and very friendly.
Review 46:This hotel is a little unique, but the long hanging, light up curtains became kind of a pain. The interiors are all in white so I think they kept it clean but dirt and marks showed up on the walls.
Review 47:Staff were great. Recommended a great restaurant a few blocks from the hotel and generally helped us navigate Barca with ease. Location was also great.
Review 48:This hotel was very funky... To the point of making it a little inconvenient. They have drapes over every door, including elevator. Looks very cool, but always in the way. The rooms are very tight but they served their purpose. Overall, good hotel.
Review 49:This was a very interesting hotel... Unique and artsy. The staff was always readily available to assist. The locations was pretty close to the metro and close to some fun and funky (read expensive) restaurants, shops, and bars
Review 50:The friendliest most warm and welcoming staff, who go out of their way to be helpful. Very cool and unpretentious. I've stayed twice now and would definitely stay again.
Review 51:Room was very small even for the two of us. You must be very comfortable with who your traveling with because open concept to bathroom/shower.
Review 52:front desk was very helpful! Rooms were small but comfortable. Complimentary water, tea, coffee was a nice touch.
Review 53:Location is excellent for exploring Barcelona. Easy walk to two different Metro lines plus right next to a great park. Staff was very, very friendly and helpful...gave me lots of local tips on things to see and places to go. Nice lounge area on the room floor level with free coffee, biscuits, and water.
Review 54:Lovely staff from reception to cleaners. Free tea and coffee facilities and botttled water were a nice touch. Relaxing ambiance, super clean and great location. Will definitely return
Review 55:Nothing bad
Review 56:Staff were very friendly and helpful. The location was excellent for exploring the city. The kids loved the lights in the room and the quirky décor. We enjoyed the free coffee, water and biscuits
Review 57:leaving for airport!!!!!
Review 58:Brilliant really appreciated free coffee, tea and. , water each day ...quiet and calm of a a busy centrally situated hotel.Absolute value for money... definitely return and recommend .
Review 59:The door to the reception is really squeaky! A little bit of bathroom smell off reception. More hangars in room and a table/desk would be nice.
Review 60:Stylish, great Staff, quality rooms. Fun! I'll be back.
Review 61:The room was not Convinient, we had no separate balcony, we were sharing it with another couple
Review 62:The location was excellent, the free lounge with coffee and snacka was very convenient
Review 63:bed a bit too firm for my comfort pillows could be better no conditioner/body lotion
Review 64:colors and creative interior friendly staff perfect location/quiet even in daytime 'help yourself' room with free coffee/tea and water reasonably priced minibar
Review 65:if I had to be super picky, the design idea of plastic ropes hanging outside of the door!!
Review 66:Cute trendy little hotel with the facilities you need in this level of hotel, in a lovely old building. This hotel was recommended to me, and still exceeded any expectations. Loved the nespresso coffee machine in the refreshment area, plus the availability of bottled water. The next hotel I stayed in was a 5* and didn't have such good refreshment amenities. The level of service was excellent and delivered in a friendly helpful way. I want to go back to Born just to stay in this hotel!!
Review 67:This is more a hotel for couples. We were fine, but we were family. The room is very open, no privacy.
Review 68:The room was unique. The changing lights are cool. Liked the snack area & meeting place. The staff was very helpful and friendly. Alex made wonderful sangrias! Gustavo was very friendly and socialized with everyone. It was in a great location.
Review 69:- The room is not sound-proofed, so you can hear everyone passing by the hallway... not great when you're trying to sleep
Review 70:- Extremely friendly staff (made my weekend!) - Nice interior design - Very close to the centre of town
Review 71:Nothing bad to say!
Review 72:Location approx 10 minutes walk from la Rambla, 5 mins walk from marina. free tea, coffee and water in help your self area. Clean and tidy, lovely powerful shower, all staff friendly, even had a small gym, not that we used it. Also a bar/cafe downstairs. Would definitely recommend.
Review 73:When we arrive first day , I freeezed in the room and ask the receptionto fix the a/c to hot weather but they told us that "wedidn't pass to winter yet so didn't activated the heating systemin the air conditions" .. I told them to activate but the Africanreceptionist guy , told me to wear clothes and blanket which wasunacceptable...
Review 74:Location was very nice , some of the staff was very friendly and freecoffee and water as well as free wifi is good.
Review 75:The price is a little high for a 3* hotel.
Review 76:The arrangements, the accommodations, the cute messages in the room and the presentation, the position of the hotel, the surroundings, the cocktails served at the reception.
Review 77:There was nothing I didn't like
Review 78:It was really chic and not as basic as I had expected. Concept terrific (and wonderfully executed) and location terrific
Review 79:Born is generally noisy, so it is hard to sleep when windows are open. But thats a well known fact and not the fault of the Hotel
Review 80:Friendly staff, love for details, excellent tea and coffee for free
Review 81:When neighbouring room had guests in, could hear their toilet flushing quite loudly behind the wall, shame. Everything else just brilliant!
Review 82:Room brilliant, completely new look, fun space with funky lighting, beautiful "cornicing shelf", shower area great with original floor and fantastically high ceiling. communal areas and coffee room like "home", get ice bucket or Nespresso coffee any time. So happy with our choice of hotel!!!!
Review 83:- The pillow was a bit to hard, but that's just personal taste
Review 84:- Trendy Interior - Friendliness and helpfulness of the staff - Mood lights! - Free water, coffee and tea for guests - Right smack in the middle of one of the trendiest neighbourhoods of Barcelona
Review 85:Would like a fridge in the room
Review 86:We were walking distance from the Gothic quarter. Perfect for La Merce festival which just happened to be on the weekend we visited Barcelona. Staff were friendly & we loved our room
Review 87:We loved the décor. We were grateful to have a room with a balcony out to the street so we could watch the action if we wanted to but, when closed, could be calm and quite. Like to have the availability of the coffee and tea and also the bottled water available to us at all times. Loved the building and the area which was so close to good eating, the park and the shopping.
Review 88:No wifi inside the room.
Review 89:Cool corner room with balcony and very spacious black bathroom. Nespresso machine and welcome bag inside the room, nice designer furniture and lighting! Great location in best "barrio" in town.."El Borne"!
Review 90:My only criticism is that it feels a little unloved - as if the refurbishment was completed and there hasn't been ongoing maintenance. It needs a little spruce up.
Review 91:The location is excellent, near the Picasso Museum, Gothic area and the Born restaurants and shops, as well as the gardens and Arc de Triumf. The staff were helpful and fiendly. The vibe is arty and creative.
Review 92:I honestly can't think of anything!
Review 93:Location near great restaurants and close to La Cathedral, Las Ramblas and more! Fantastic staff, very helpful and accommodating in all regards, they even printed our tickets for Sagrada Familia & allowed us to shower before our late flight even though we had checked out earlier in the day. Free coffee, water & wifi. Awesome spacious room with lovely view onto street from balcony and the comfiest and hugest bed ever!
Review 94:The hotel lacks atmosphere. The reception is set in a separate entrance which is actually a bar and is separate to the hotel therefore you don’t even feel like the hotel has a reception. The rooms are tired and need updating. The hotel is dull rather than chic and feels quite shabby throughout. I felt like I was interrupting the reception whenever I asked for something. However there was one very friendly gentleman all the other staff almost seemed arrogant. The layout of rooms is just horrendous with a lot of wasted space and feels quite claustrophobic. The idea of what they are trying to do could work if done properly however they don’t execute it well.
Review 95:Location is really good set away from the super touristy parts of town. Easy access to parks, beaches and great places to eat and drink footsteps away. Barcelona is such a beautiful city!
Review 96:- there isn't wi-fi in the hotel; - if you are lucky and find wi-fi, it's works just ten minutes; - indolent receptionist
Review 97:- intimate room - hotel position - cleaning - good coffee at the breakfast
Review 98:A bit expensive, space could have been bigger, perhaps a bit typical of this type of accommodation in Barcelona in General.
Review 99:Perfect city pad for our adventures in Barcelona. Ultra modern. Communal areas were great with free coffee, biscuits and water. Lights were amusing. Staff we're very friendly and helpful.
Review 100:The free wifi signal in the room was a bit weak - a couple of times I needed to walk through the hallway until it found the signal but then it I would stay connected.
Review 101:Both the reception and housekeeping staff were all extremely helpful and pleasant. The various relaxation areas throughout the hotel with tea, coffee and water always available were nice. My room was outstanding - loved the lighting and a quiet balcony to relax on. I was pleasantly surprised how quiet it was at night given the proximity to the city center. The location near to the park was excellent, and only 15 minutes walk to the beach is a great compromise between city and surf.
Review 102:The hotel brought more than expected in terms of the staff, quality and location. Just a 5 minute walk to get to the gothic quarter and las ramblas as well as little quirky shops and places to eat along the way. The staff were more than helpful, very nice.
Review 103:The beads hanging everywhere. Elevator was pretty small and a little scary.
Review 104:Loved the staff! So friendly and helpful! Location was great! Happy Hour and the wonderful gin and tonics served in the lobby.
Review 105:Because Chic & Basic favors style over function, it took a while for us to figure out how the room worked. And we never got the TV to work, though we really didn't put time into it.
Review 106:The location in Born is just terrific. Train delays caused us to arrive at 4 am; we very much appreciated that the check-in desk is staffed 24 hours a day! Our room had a street view. No issues with this: we had plenty of room, and street noise didn't keep us up.
Review 107:What a horrible room: Tacky lighting, beyond tiny (probably the smallest room Ive ever stayed in), with a window that is opaque and overlooks a construction site once opened, and not too clean. Oh and we were never warned to expect construction banging at 9am everyday of the week. A hotel I would never stay at again, even if for free!
Review 108:Location
Review 109:location is right in the heart of Born, close to beach, next to park, next to best little cafes and shops. nice cold air conditioning, no noise when windows closed and super spacious bathroom.
Review 110:wifi wasn't always working in room which made it difficult to work sometimes.
Review 111:comfy and cool..loved location, breakfast very pleasant, coffee and great assortment of fresh teas, water available on every floor, excellent lounge area on floor, staff friendly
Review 112:very far away from a metro station the basic rooms don't have any view, you can't see outside and that gave me a claustrophobic feeling
Review 113:friendliness of the staff
Review 114:Location, location, location! The chilled out atmosphere, funky decor and facilities.
Review 115:staff excellent & helpful for places to go to eat
Review 116:Loved the uniqueness of the hotel and friendliness of the staff
Review 117:Lasted 2 mins ...for that money i could have had more
Review 118:Shagged a puta
Review 119:nice room, perfect position
Review 120:Lovely staff, free coffee (nespresso), fresh tea and water.
Review 121:The staff are always lovely ...we visit Barcelona twice a year & will always stay with them !
Review 122:The amount of tourists.
Review 123:I love the city.
Review 124:Amazingly nice personnel. The ideas with the common coffee zone, the lighting etc are very cool
Review 125:Poor lighting in the room. Shower could be better.
Review 126:Location, free coffee and tea. Bed was comfortable.
Review 127:Shower could use some refurbishing.
Review 128:Outstanding location in the Born quarter with walking distance to many sights and restaurants
Review 129:missed a printer connected to the PC to print boarding cards
Review 130:location in el born rooms design chill out room bar
The Fine Print
