Reviews for Hôtel de la Gare

Review 1:Perfect location, everything else also nice. A place to stay if you have things to do in Cherbourg and do not want to overpay. Not my first stay in this hotel and will stay again when in Cherbourg.

Review 2:Our room was basic but very clean. The hosts enthusiastic to help in any way possible. The location across the street from the station and very near our rental car pickup was perfect for us.

Review 3:The stairs was narrow without elevator and breakfast could be better.

Review 4:A clean hotel, not very far away of the center(about 15 minutes by foot), with some puplic places for parking just in front of the hotel, free of charge.

Review 5:Bathroom was a bit basic.

Review 6:Surprisingly spacious bedroom with view of the back garden & wonderful Monkey Puzzle tree. Very quiet night outside. Somewhat old fashioned décor & furnishings. Great location near the railway station & just a short walk into town.

Review 7:None at all.

Review 8:1. Location, right opposite rail station and round the corner from Europcar to book your hire car, a one minute walk. 2. Ease of access: you can walk here from the ferry shuttle bus stop if you are a foot passenger in 10 minutes. Town centre/bars/restaurants/marina etc is all about a 7 -10 minute walk away. 3. Friendly, helpful staff, if you speak any French they will love you but English is spoken .Looked after our suitcases all day before the ferry sailing and booked our taxi too, superb hosts! 4. Rooms are basic, quiet, very clean and we had two very comfortable double beds to choose from! Lovely garden view at the rear, excellent shower. 5. No communal facilities downstairs, and no tea/coffee making facilities but this is normal in 2 star, so bring your own kettle if you need this! Breakfast is simple - croissant, baguette, confitures, coffee/tea and squeezed juice but all very good and good value. Can't really fault this hotel, we have used it 3 times in 2 years and would definitely recommend it.

Review 9:Room booking said it would be 20square metres. It was barely 13 and the toilet such I had to sit on it side on and stand up to wipe my bum. In the shower I dropped the soap and had to open the shower door to bend down and pick it up

Review 10:Easy to find, close to ferry terminal, town centre, tourist info and Carrefour plus they were able to store our tandem bicycle safely overnight. Staff super friendly but got the feeling from the wife that we should be able to speak french. In Australia chinese or indonesian is a more logical choice.

Review 11:Very large room. Great location. Very quiet as we looked over the rear garden. We were there on a Saturday and Sunday and the parking outside was free.

Review 12:The hotel is not only convenient for taking a train but it is also charming and clean. The room was tiny but cozy and the bathroom was super clean and functional.

Review 13:The heating in the room is not working properly. It has been cold, too cold, even though the heater was turned on at maximum. After complaining, the receptionist on poor English said that they are opening their heating at 2 p.m., which also wasn't true. So I was lucky enough to stay there ONLY for two days, and mainly during the night, with extra blanket... Small space in the room, but also the bathroom. You have to sit diagonally on your toilet seat, as the wall is just in front of you. Strange. Uncomfortable.

Review 14:The location is just at the train station. Very convenient. You can walk to the centre.

Review 15:Parking was not great. If we arrived back after about 6pm, it was difficult to get parked apart from a disabled space. We were advised that a hefty fine would incur if we parked there. Not good as we then had nowhere to leave our car.

Review 16:Owners were very friendly and bilingual

Review 17:No headboard on bed so pillows slipped behind mattress. Double bed was a little narrow for us.

Review 18:Good location. Hotel staff polite and helpful. Hotel foyer and stairwell rather 'tired' and stair carpet grubby but room clean and functional. Nice hot water for the shower. Wifi signal good.

Review 19:Old furnishings and bed sagged. Few shops or restaurants in the immediate area (but a Carrefour and the cafes of the old town are not far). Optional breakfast is just bread.

Review 20:Good for the modest price - reasonably-sized room, bathroom small but had a good shower. Across from the train station, 5min walk to the old town. Quiet with the windows closed. Good wifi. Some parking outside (free at night).

Review 21:The wi-fi connection was poor.

Review 22:The room was tidy and comfortable to stay in. It was located about 10 minutes walking distance from the ferry port and 5 minutes from the town centre.

Review 23:Windows had to be shut at night due to traffic noise as the hotel is on a major road crossing. No fan was provided so the room was too hot. Bedding was clean but of a poor standard. Old fashioned sheets and counterpane. Needs updating to duvet and decent pillows. Mattress was very soft and gave backache. Toiletries provided were meagre. Two tiny soap bars and two small sachets of hair/body wash. This is a fairly old fashioned hotel in need of modernising. It was more expensive than the B&B Hotel in La Glacerie,Cherbourg where we usually stay. We will not be returning to Hotel de la Gare and would advise others to be cautious if booking before looking.

Review 24:Locale with regard to Cherbourg city centre. Staff were friendly Not much else.

Review 25:The breakfast was very limited and we would have breakfast somewhere else another time. But the good price of the hotel means this isn't a problem

Review 26:The location was perfect. Parks, restaurants and ferry all very near. The room was clean and comfortable. Easy to get wifi. The staff were really friendly. We are already planning to stay there again.

Review 27:Nothing, really. No lift, but we knew that before we booked and it was no problem after we got our bags to the room. It's a basic, very clean hotel, somewhat dated and old fashioned in furniture and décor but we liked that.

Review 28:Friendliness and helpfulness of the owner. No lift but he helped carry a very heavy suitcase up to our room. Very clean and modern bathroom and shower facilities. Room looked out onto small garden area at rear from the third floor, very quiet. Very comfortable bed, had a great sleep after a long journey and tiring day. Hotel was only a short walk into the town centre, lots of eating/drinking establishments to choose from. Great for an overnight stay for the ferry port, very reasonable price, good if basic French style breakfast and the owner was a cheerful and humorous chap who made the stay very pleasant. For those who want to book a hire car, the Europcar office is just around the corner, opposite the mainline railway station, couldn't be easier. Would definitely stay there again.

Review 29:None

Review 30:Cheap and cheerful with optional breakfast for just 6.50 euro. The owners are very friendly and helpful. Location wise it's excellent with it being a 10 minute walk to the heart of the city centre and literally 100m from the main train station. Highly recommended for budget travellers.

Review 31:Arrived at the hotel feeling tired after a long journey but was immediately made to feel welcome by the lovely owner. Although the decor was a bit dated, the rooms were very clean and tidy and the hotel very well located as it was about 5 minute drive from the ferry port and about 10 minute walk to the main area where the restaurants and cafes were located. What made the hotel stand out though was the owner and the staff - friendly, helpful and very encouraging to my very rusty French! Would definitely recommend this hotel.

Review 32:The room we had, had a foul drainage smell come up through the shower waste whenever upstairs flushed the toilet or used the wash basin. Water pipework rattled and banged in wall behind bedhead.

Review 33:Close walk to everthing. Friendly owners.

Review 34:It was quite hard to take our luggage up and down the stairs

Review 35:A man in the reception (I believe he owns the hotel) was very helpful and friendly. In the morning when he heard that we were going down the stairs he came to say good morning for us.

Review 36:Breakfast was basic but it was only continental so not really a complaint! I just am not keen on jam/ bread etc.

Review 37:Near to ferry and station, clean basic :) no charge for wifi like some rip off hotels! The owner went out and bought me soya milk which was lovely even some big hotels fail to provide this for us veggies!!

Review 38:we stayed when it was very hot and there is no aircon.

Review 39:Value for money and very convenient for the train station. Breakfast was just typical French of juice/coffee/croissant/bread and jam, but very fresh and served by the charming owner.

Review 40:We have stayed here before, it is so clean, comfortable and the hosts are very welcoming. Perfect for visiting the centre of Cherbourg

Review 41:very helpful and friendly staff

Review 42:Friendly welcome Good breakfast

Review 43:Nowhere around to eat although there were Restaurants and a large Carrefour a 10 minute walk away

Review 44:Handy for the Railway Station and NOTHING ELSE

Review 45:The staff were excellent,a good sized comfortable room

Review 46:No lift

Review 73:Hotel in a great location. Walking distance to centre of town. Quaint hotel but very comfortable and good value for money

Review 74:It is an older hotel but, it was very clean, straight across the road from the train station and the owners were so lovely and helpful.

Review 75:Location

Review 76:lack of private parking for motorcycle, but I have to say everything was Ok the following morning.

Review 77:Very friendly couple who welcomed you on arrival.

Review 78:small, friendly hotel good location adequately clean

Review 79:This is an old premises which is badly in need of moderation and decoration. More suitable for Bagpackers than families or couples.

Review 93:The staff and location were fabulous.

Review 94:Shower head was loose. Might be good to provide eggs

Review 95:Ok for vfm

Review 96:The most helpfull staff

Review 97:I was on the third floor with no lift, I should have checked that. They could vary the breakfast menu just a little

Review 98:The location was just right, but the staff were amazing. They made the stay for me.

Review 99:Nothing.

Review 100:The owners were very friendly and helpful. The hotel was conveniently situated for the town. I was concerned when I saw how close it was to a major traffic junction but the room was very quiet. Very good value for money.

Review 101:Breakfast was inadequate. No Cheese or Ham on the table only jam which we do not eat, So just Bread to eat.

Review 102:Very Friendly. Assisted us by giving the room at 12h00 instead of 14h00.

Review 103:My knees will remember the three flights of stairs, no elevator, but it is not a complaint just a point for those with my creaking joints.

Review 104:Lovely place full of character. Loved the location so near everything including ferry, trains, Citie dela Mer, and a lovely lot of shops and restaurants nearby. Nice little parking bay in front. Wonderful Manager with a great welcome.

Review 105:Room was dark because the light bulbs were all low wattage eco-friendly types. OK for me on this trip, but not great if I had wanted to do some work.

Review 106:Free WiFi, good location opposite the station, friendly welcome, large bed and room.

Review 107:The location was fabulous! easy to get to from the train on foot and only minutes from our friend's home. The people at the bar next door were very welcoming and we were lucky enough to get to participate in a birthday celebration for an 82 year old. The owner of the bar loves to speak English! The hotel owners were very friendly and helpful and if you need it, they both speak English. I would definitely recommend it to anyone staying in Cherbourg.

Review 108:Breakfast very poor and do not correspond to extra price for it. bathroom not built in effective way. Door from shower hit the sink. room is too small. No place between bed and wall to walk to the door

Review 109:Receptionist extreamly friendly

Review 110:Very dated and tired. One bath towel in room for two people. Had to leave at 7am and breakfast was to be served at 7:30am. Would have been a nice touch to give us something packaged up as we left.

Review 111:Location and staff

Review 112:Very friendly and caring, they made me feel as an old friend of them. Had to leave very early morning, so I haven't get the opportunity to say thank's but they really deserved that

Review 114:Very large and comfortable room.Good welcome and staff very friendly.

Review 115:Great location, friendly staff and fairly clean. Good for cyclists because they have small area to keep your bikes. Should check with hotel 1st though.

Review 116:Friendly husband and wife owners. Very welcoming very helpful in guiding to places in cherbourg. Comfortable clean room overlooking lovely garden even though just opposite the station.
