Reviews for Le Vieux Beffroi
Review 1:We'd booked a double room, but it turned out to be twin beds - staff had disappeared by the time we realised, thus too late to change it - likewise, we could have done with an extra pillow, as the ones provided were rather thin. Shower didn't drain away, so flooded the bathroom floor. No tea/coffee facility in room was disappointing.
Review 2:The room was a good size for a budget city hotel stay. Good view over the central square, and double glazed windows effectively blocked out noise of the lively Christmas market. Wi-fi worked OK, except you had to sign up each time you wanted to use it.
Review 3:There was a strong smell of smoke during the night coming from the downstairs room - strong enough to wake me up. I presume someone was smoking in the room below ours
Review 4:Great location, helpful staff
Review 5:The bar and reception staff had a tendency to ignore you to talk to each other, turning their back on you. When we came down for breakfast, which was not included, there was nothing left and it didn't get topped up. It wasn't late.
Review 6:The hotel was on the square and our room looked out on it.
Review 7:Breakfast was poor. Sometimes things were there sometimes not. Painting going on while breakfast being served. No instructions given.
Review 8:Very friendly staff
Review 9:Had to leave before breakfast so don't know how good it was; bit of noise from square until late (but it didn't bother me)
Review 10:Great location and lively bar - the square is beautiful and the hotel is nicely presented
Review 11:This was our 2nd visit to this hotel. On our first visit our room was clean, comfortable and had a lovely view of the main square. Unfortunately on our 2nd visit the sink was dusty and dirty, a used shower gel container was in the shower, stains were evident on the bed cover and we looked over the fire escape and roof. Disappointing.
Review 12:Location is excellent.
Review 13:Was a bit noisy. That said, what do you expect facing on to the main square on a Friday night?
Review 14:Location, friendly staff, alright breakfast for the price.
Review 15:We required twin rooms as all in the party were male, on arrival rooms were made up as doubles, which infact were twin beds made up as doubles. staff claimed they could not change things as the person whos job it was was not there that day and they did not have any single sheets.
Review 16:Wifi drove me mad cutting out frequently and having to keep re-registering. Couldn't get TV to work. Shower was a struggle to get right despite instructions.
Review 17:Restaurant was excellent. Location very central. Generally friendly and helpful.
Review 18:Rooms even new had a smell of sewage and humidity. since the hotel is still under renovation i assume it will be solved shortly?
Review 19:the perfect location at the grand'place especially that we were here for some vacation and a family event right at the time of the Christmas market opening.
Review 20:The hotel was a friendly, welcoming attractive hotel overlooking Bethune square. The location was perfect, right in the centre of Bethune. We overlooked the christmas market during our stay in December it was magical! We wanted a typically French stay and that's just what we got...it was perfect thank you!
Review 21:Shame they messed up the shower design, they don't work. Smell of bleach to clean the ground floor at breakfast time wasn't great. Poor breakfast quality.
Review 22:The location and comfortable rooms.
Review 23:In the whole building there was a terrible smell. The people serving speaking French and French. Average quality food in the restaurant.
Review 24:A good modern room with a good bed and bathroom
Review 25:poor breakfast( dried up croissants), heating not functioning, we were supplied electric heaters. wifi is free but kept disconnecting in certain areas of the bedroom.
Review 26:Great view of square and beffroi, comfortable bed.
Review 27:It wasn't the hotel's fault that there was a lot of noise in the square in the early hours of the morning, but it didn't last long.
Review 28:The room was comfortable and clean. The restaurant was fantastic with efficient and friendly staff, as well as very good food.
Review 29:No free parking, although the booking said there was. Had to re-register for wi-fi every time I logged on - irritating. On arrival, only one towel and one hanger, despite asking for more, they took a day to arrive. Breakfast was average, and not replenished - no croissants on the first day - in France!!
Review 30:The locations cannot be faulted - right on the main square with easy access to restaurants, bars and other facilities. When the room was cold on our first night, we were given two additional heaters very promptly.
Review 31:The reception-desk set-up is a little underwhelming, but once you work-out that you need to approach the downstairs barstaff, all runs smoothly.
Review 32:My standard of French is ok, but even so, the staff offered to Speak English, although not necessary for me. The room had clearly been recently refurbished to a very high standard. The town square location is great for access to cafes, restaurants and bars. There is a lively buzz around in the evening due to Bethune being a university town. The Manager was very understanding when I had to cut-short my stay due to an unfortunate change in personal circumstances. It,s only a ten minute walk to the train station, for trains to Calais, Lille and Paris.
Review 33:The shower was tepid at best. It was designed for a large wet room - ita cubicle. When we tried to use it, it suddenly started to spray allover the room. The dinner was overpriced, especially the house wine incarafe, at over 20 euros a litre. We should have asked. The dining roomsmelled very badly of drains.
Review 34:We had to laugh! The facilities were all very modern looking. The showerwas very high tech. With four different spray nozzles. The room lookedout over the square. Breakfast was good. The speaking lift kept gettingthe floor number wrong. Good night sleep.
Review 35:Noisy all night long with loud music and people shouting. No handle on bathroom door. Shower flooded bathroom. No wifi and reception couldn't help.
Review 36:The hotel was in the town centre so great location for restaurants and bars
Review 37:The hotel had been recently refurbished. However, the first room we were given had only a shower curtain dividing the bathroom (including the toilet) from the bedroom. We changed to another room which had suffered a serious leak from the bathroom above and was in need of redecoration.
Review 38:The location which was excellent
Review 39:Nothing to dislike. If you do find something you must be very hard to please for this price.
Review 40:This is a superb location for the centre if Bethune. A very enjoyable stay and quiet. Would definetely book here again. Check out the shower brilliant.
Review 41:We were told there was free parking. There was only street parking which had to be paid for. Also, there is no parking on Monday mornings from 6am because of market. Fine for us as it was a quick overnight stay but would hesitate in future.
Review 42:There was too little toiletpaper in the room, so had to queue up at the receptiondesk to ask some, where the receptionist, who was appearantly just a temporary replacement for his boss, seemed to have other priorities. It ended up in an somewhat unfriendly encounter. All for such basic stuff like toiletpaper! There was no cold water in the room. Just warm.(?) the (excl)breakfast was finished by the time we got in ( in time) and there was no one to assist or supply the food
Review 43:The room and elivator seemed brandnew, comfi bed and shower. Very comfortable and clean. Best location in Bethune if you are without a car. Room in the back are quiet
Review 44:No parking and no staff. I am not comfortable with these hotels who have no staff on reception. Checking out was a problem as there was only one person to do desk, breakfasts etc. Security is a joke! We were lucky checking in at 4pm as the one staff was about to go home for the day.
Review 45:Central Location
Review 46:Also to be fair people had commented about there being no staff about. When we did need them, upstairs bathroom flooded into ours, they helped all they could by moving our room, which was fine. There is no air con but we had taken a desk fan and fridge for our 7 day hol.
Review 47:To be fair after reading other comments i tried my best not to go. I am so glad i went there. The location is fabulous. The room we were given overlooked the chiming bell tower, it was a reasonable size, en suite, clean and serviced every day with fresh towels. For 2.3 euros you could park on the street till 10.30am the next day so it wasn't a problem.
Review 48:Location is very good in the center on a square with a lot of horeca facilities and beautiful buildings. City is small but nice for the stay of one night. There was some confusion about the free parking, not all the staff speaks english very well, but at the end we had a free parking place in front of the hotel. The room was nice, clean and shower was great.
Review 49:The hotel was on the Grand Place - perfect situation. We had stayed there many years ago before the current owner had it and it is still a good place.
Review 50:1.Door to reception not working from outside. 2. Had to wait for 10 minutes for member of staff to attend reception desk. We asked bar staff 3 times. Hotel advertises 24 hour manned reception!! 3. Only 1 hand towel and 1 bath towel provided in room. There were two of us. 4. Booking form said free parking available. Staff member said we would have to use paying underground car park or find our own space in nearby street 5. No staff at reception on morning of departure, had to ask a waiter who had not used the system before and it took too long. 6. Charge for room had gone up 5 euros from booking. Quoted 57 Euros charged 62.
Review 51:comfortable room
Review 52:Said on our itinery there was free parking on site. Wrong. There is NO parking at all on site. Had to park on underground car park next door. Can only park on meters close by for 2 hours. Very noisy in front room. Breakfast a shambles. Eat out on 2nd morning. Disorganised.
Review 53:Located in the main square. That's it.
Review 54:The location on the square with its interesting architecture
Review 55:bathroom was dirty and not disinfected internet connection procedure is complicate
Review 56:good food great position and room view
Review 57:With a bit more attention to detail they could do a lot better.
Review 58:Great location Everything was OK - no frills but fine.
Review 59:Abysmal breakfast. Poor service. No staff empathy
Review 60:Central location. Good terrace bar. Excellent access
Review 61:A good standard private hotel in the excellent location of the town square at Bethune.
Review 62:Staff were very friendly and the location was excellent
Review 63:room had not been cleaned or sheets changed. had to ask for another room which was smelly
Review 64:location
Review 65:Wifi was unpredictable !
Review 66:Excellent room and facilities.
Review 67:There were problems checking in as there were no staff on the reception desk. We had a water leak from the room above.
Review 68:The location and the price
Review 69:Wi fi hit and miss
Review 70:Good location
Review 71:my nephew woke with several bites all over him breakfast was a joke. unhelpful staff
Review 72:lovely town square, especially at night
Review 73:Great location, clean and a nice big bed. Great view out the window. Very nice stay
Review 74:The food was good, friendly staff, and very convenient.
Review 75:cold showers
Review 76:no appropriate heating in room
Review 77:The wifi kept losing connection
Review 78:Showers were very fancifuk and difficult to use. there was no water due to low pressure and then no hoy water when the pressure returned.
Review 79:New, very comfortable room with modern furniture and bathroom. Wonderful view from the room to the centre place of the town.
Review 80:No tea making facilities. Good shower but the water goes everywhere.
Review 81:Clean, friendly and good location.
Review 82:The rooms were a bit out of date but not too bad for the money.
Review 83:The 24 hour front desk, the location with free parking a bonus.
Review 84:The breakfast service was very disappointing.
Review 85:The location was excellent
Review 86:Service desk could be poorly staffed.
Review 87:Rooms were clean and updated.
Review 88:I was over charged for the room but my French wasn't good enough to sort the situation out. I booked the room for 2 people at 57 euros. Then breakfast would be 7.50euros each. I was charged 80 euros on leaving and would somehow like this rectified. Other issues - - Only 1 set of towels in the room so we had to share a towel. The bar was busy and no one came to reception. We had to be somewhere at 8.30pm. - There was also only 1 small cup in the room, no tea or coffee whatsoever. - The shower was cold, even after altering the temperature. I was very disappointed, we did not have very good facilities in the room and then to be over charged, or for there to be hidden charges, makes me very upset.
Review 89:The location was perfect, and the staff greeting was friendly. We also really liked the breakfast options. The bed was comfortable and we did sleep once the concert outside had stopped. (although had we known a concert would be on we could have stayed there)
Review 90:No private parking. Some free places are available in the main square in front of the hotel but you should have luck or wait patiently until you'll be able to get one.
Review 91:Well equipped hotel. Very helpful and friendly staff. The room is quite comfortable and located in the very center of Bethune. All electric and bathroom facilities are new, perfectly operating, and made in a new techno style, which I've never seen before.
Review 92:No free car parking at site.Reception unmanned during the whole of our stay.No one to ask for details of free wifi. No one to ask for details of breakfast.Room although modern and refurbished not clean.Carpet appeared not vacuumed for a few days at least, and dust on skirting boards and on top of headboard. No air-conditioning and noisy at night. No final bill on departure(guess why) no-body on reception
Review 93:Proximity to town
Review 94:Room was too hot and could not open the window as it was a Saturday night and the square was busy until 2am. The noise level at night was horrendous hence no sleep. The room was located by the stairwell and lift so could hear everything going on. Staff spoke very little English
Review 95:Hotel is very central and located in a beautiful square
Review 96:One of our party was in a room in the un-refurbished part of the hotel (fourth floor). They were bitten to blazes in the night!
Review 97:great location on La Grande Place
Review 98:The bed was as hard as the floor. Put a 2 inch top mattress ontop and sort it out so its possible to get some sleep. Couldnt login to wifi. Somewhat brisk welcome on arrival. "Here is key and there is the lift" he didnt find my booking at first.
Review 99:Location is ok in regards to the many bars and parking underneath the square.
Review 100:It appears that the hotel has gone through a complete refurbishment and although the rooms were finished (to a very good standard)the reception was still being worked on, however that did not affect our stay. The position is fantastic and I would recommend anyone in the area stays there.
Review 101:No dedicated parking for the hotel, rooms quite basic (but overall good value for money)
Review 102:The food was excellent, the staff very friendly and accommodating, (considering my basic French)
Review 103:No specific parking. WiFi unreliable. TV channels had bad signal. Hotel entrance not easy to find, you have to go in to the ground floor restaurant first. What looks to be the entrance is a fire exit but you could see the reception desk so this made it confusing. Not obvious who were staff and who were customers. Hotel currently undergoing a refurbishment which wasn't stated before booking. Lift not working and parts of the stairs were unfinished and slightly dangerous due to tripping hazard.
Review 104:Great location. Would be a great hotel when finished properly.
Review 105:nothing to fault it , would go again
Review 106:they had works in the reception and did not warn us in advance. we could not find the entrance
Review 107:location was perfect
Review 108:Cold water
Review 109:Cleaneless
