Reviews for Palacio de los Velada

Review 1:Set in a former palace, the public areas of the hotel are beautifully decorated. The location in Cathedral Square is very convenient for sight seeing. Reception staff were extremely welcoming, helpful and efficient. The breakfast spread was good, as were the service in all the eating areas.

Review 2:The place was very hot inside, and that while the outside temperature was very hot for the time of year. We had to turn off the hot air and bathroom radiator and open the balcony doors for hours to make it comfy. The surrounding rooms and hallway kept the temperature at a high level though, so every now and then we had to open those doors again – not nice with the high winds at night. We were told that the temperature was centrally set and that they couldn't change it – and that we were the first ones to complain...

Review 3:Nice old structures, well maintained, makes for a pleasant stay.

Review 4:Nothing

Review 5:We spent 3 nights here and prepaid our stay so felt we got excellent value for money. We had a king bedded room which was very comfortable. The location is excellent for seeing the sights & for restaurants & shopping. We had a good dinner at El Tostado in the inner court yard.

Review 6:Staff a bit variable. The man on reception when we arrived was very dour, borderline rude, possibly because we are a biking couple(?), but the man on reception the next day was charming, polite & helpful. Bathroom very smelly on arrival-turned out to be the drains & improved with time, which should probably be avoided in this calibre of hotel.

Review 7:Beautiful, historic building well-located in the centre of the old town. Comfortable room with a huge bed.

Review 8:This historic treasure had every modern convenience as well as tasteful decor. I loved the patio area(now with a transparent roof) at the center of the building where meals or simply drinks were served. The location on the plaza near the cathedral was not only convenient but peaceful. Every member of the staff was helpful and pleasant.

Review 9:Excellent Sunday lunch, very pleasant and attentive maître d and waiting staff, beautiful sunlit enclosed patio made the dining experince very special.

Review 10:WiFi was a little "iffy". Could have done with a couple of extra pillows on the bed - but I suppose we should have asked! Our fault!

Review 11:Just about everything!

Review 12:No bad experience

Review 13:We have stayed here several times en route between ferry and La Manga. It has the appearance inside of a traditional historic Parador and is situated opposite the Cathedral in this beautiful walled city. The rooms are very comfortable and there is a menu to choose your pillows from a selection of 12. There is the advantage of a large underground car park otherwise parking would be impossible. A very good price is offered via Booking.com. Highly recommended.

Review 14:Could be a little hard to locate if arriving by car,GPS essential. Cost of parking. Parking outside the hotel is almost impossible and you cannot access the garage until you have checked in, not good ! The price for breakfast is just far too expensive, take a two minute walk to a local cafe for real value. The building is magnificent, but old and that could mean problems. We had to change rooms due to a disgusting situation in our bathroom however the issue was dealt with well.

Review 15:Location right in the centre of the historical part of the city. Very close to lots of local places to eat and drink. Good secure underground parking.

Review 16:The Staff on reception were a little pushy and hurried us when booking in. In our opinion the meal was overpriced for what it was.

Review 17:The location was perfect the hotel was beautiful and even similar to some paradores

Review 18:Rainy day so hotel restaurant busy, and the waiter could not cope, they eventually served us and it was very nice.

Review 19:great rooms, location great, nice pleasant hotel with garage...so handy.

Review 20:It's written they have air condition, but actually it doesn't work, only on summer. We were there in September and air condition didn't work at all. Very bad WiFi. No safe. Very old and not comfortable hotel. Maximum 3 stars. Not friendly staff.

Review 21:Excellent location

Review 22:Tight access into car park. No proper air conditioning in the bedroom, just warm ambient air blower - resulting in poor sleep quality in overly warm room. No menu offered at breakfast so confusion as to what was included in 'continental' and 'buffet'.

Review 23:Central location with a splendid restaurant.

Review 24:None

Review 25:Hotel is excellently located both near the tourist info centre and opposite the cathedral. I put my luggage in storage after checkout and continued with my sightseeing next day. The hotel staff speak English and were very helpful in printing for me the bus and train timetables to return to Madrid.

Review 26:No hot water like warm shower but we didn't mind too much

Review 27:Great location loved it pretty and quaint walkable restaurant was good choice maybe could be a little better mm

Review 28:The walls are very thin and unfortunately we had noisy neighbours on both sides and below. The only downside to the hotel.

Review 29:Wonderful hotel and helpful staff. Had set menu in the restaurant which was excellent and great value.

Review 30:Liked everything Mattress firm but no back ache.

Review 31:Staff very helpful even to printing boarding passes. Restaurant service superb, staff friendly & dietary needs met efficiently making holiday perfect.(Delicious GF rolls & GF cakes offered for breakfast) Room so quiet didn't notice cathedral clock. Unique historic property close to wall access & buses

Review 32:No isolation for sound. OK 4 nights with neighbours sharing my hours. Last night neigbour snorring the main part of the night, talked to by his wife several times. At 4 a.m. I switched chamber and slept a few hours before the new neighbours woke. No reduction in price of room.

Review 33:The antique Palace.

Review 34:If we were to be very particular, some elements of the breakfast could have been better. It's a little pricey at €12 but the surroundings are special.

Review 35:Beautiful elegant building in a wonderful location within the town walls. Stunning inner covered courtyards. Pleasant helpful staff.

Review 36:No bad experience. The room was a little tired but decor was nice, traditional. AC was tempermental. Elevators were fine but stopped with a major "clunk" every time.

Review 37:Excellent location across from the cathedral and walls. Hotel has lots of character. Room was comfortable enough.

Review 38:Room was in back of hotel and someone appeared to be doing some noisy maintenance outside our window most of the afternoon

Review 39:Location is wonderful and staff excellent. Parking under the hotel

Review 40:The service might be a bit slow, for American standards, and waiters might be too serious.

Review 41:The hotel is next to the cathedral. It has a beautiful patio. I just love the place.

Review 42:The location was perfect, in the old town. The hotel is near a good restaurant with views of the storks flying home to roost on the catherdral in the evenings.

Review 43:not good service, I take a shower, water line was broken, so we had to change our room. But nobody can help us and nobody apologize us. In this hotel, good location and facility, but low quality service..

Review 44:Nice location

Review 45:Bed a tad firm, but that is personal opinion.

Review 46:Brilliant location and comfortable hotel. Made to feel relaxed and invited any questions. Highly recommended.

Review 47:The receptionist could have been more cheerful.

Review 48:Being in a former palace, eating in the old courtyard with its coats of arms and arches. Just across the road from the cathedral.

Review 49:The breakfast in the morning was filled with tour groups and was not a relaxing experience.

Review 50:We stayed in the tower room. It had a spiral staircase that led up to the loft that was the bedroom. It had a second small bathroom up there to use during the night. The ceiling was amazing. The entire room was comfortable and filled with the charm of a genuine castle. they had underground parking.

Review 51:The beds have uncomfortable mattress The outlets was linked with the main power switch, but two outlets located in the bottom of the wall were labeled "cell phone," so those were in another power line, but I discover it the second night.

Review 52:Location, breakfast,

Review 53:The only disappointment was the chaos at breakfast with too many tour groups eating at the same time. Food not replenished quickly enough.

Review 54:The bedroom was spacious and very comfortable as was bathroom. Location perfect.

Review 55:Unwelcoming staff, offered internal room was dark and musty (moved to airier room upon request), air conditioning totally ineffective - had to open windows wide to try to sleep, breakfast pretty ordinary.

Review 56:Great location opposite the cathedral, within the city walls. Underground car parking.

Review 57:The room, whilst at the rear on first floor, overlooked the atrium roof and suffered from mechanical background noises. Tourists wandering in and out merely to photograph interior or make a selfie with classic background

Review 58:Restored public cortyard areas of a traditional palacio that have been converted into an atrium serving drinks and snacks and is used to hold evening performances. On the Saturday night a trio (piano, cello & violin) played classics. Easy access to sights of Avila.

Review 59:The AC did not work in the room. Luckily, the window open and it was cool enough but if it had been hot the room would have been very uncomfortable

Review 60:Very nice looking atrium. The staff was very friendly and accommodating.

Review 61:the hairdryer was a bit weak but this is just for the sake of pointing finger at something...

Review 62:Everything is up to the standards we expect in such a hotel in Europe.

Review 63:Avila is the old town surrounded by the citadels which are still existed and quite impressive.Hotel Palacio de los Valeda is located at the heart of the old town just face to face to the catedral.Hotel Valeda is an impressive bulding and the facilities especially lobby lounge is very good. After visiting the town and the citadels , sitting at the loby for resting is great. Hotel was full when we were there , but hotel staff was still friendly .

Review 64:Our room was in the modern wing, with wafer-thin walls; people could be heard talking into the early hours.

Review 65:The Palacio is a wonderful historic building, with an impressive central area. Our room had a good view across the walls to the hills.

Review 66:The wifi didn't work very well in the room, but it was fine in the lobby/lounge, which was where I spent most of my time anyway. The breakfast was pretty standard, but the coffee, either from the pitcher or the machine, needed improvement, alas.

Review 67:This is a big and hugely busy place, with busloads of European tourists, wedding parties on the weekends, meetings, etc. However, it turned out to be a nice place to stay. The room was large and quiet, the bath and shower were excellent, and there's a big, bright lobby/lounge area where you can sit and do your email or chat and order drinks and snacks. The restaurant was pretty good, too. I was impressed at how well the staff handled the huge volume of people who pass through this hotel.

Review 68:There was only ever 1 person on the front desk, despite queues of people. Rooms are a bit dated and the double bed was 2 singles pushed together.

Review 69:Location inside city walls, but tricky to find even with sat nav. Secure garage but small so on first come basis

Review 70:Difficult to find using satnav, lots of very narrow one way streets and entrance to walled city a little obscure. Had to park car and get out and walk in order to find the hotel.

Review 71:Lovely Hotel in excellent location. Large, well furnished comfortable room with huge bathroom. Good breakfast with plenty of choice. Secure parking but a little expensive.

Review 72:The services from reception to restaurant was terrible, because there was a communication barrier. If you don't speak Spanish you are literally left to your own devices.

Review 73:The hotel overall has kept somehwat the feeling of a palace in yesteryear.

Review 74:Air conditioning was not running on the first day we were there as it was not yet summer. It was activated the next day but it's master setting was set too low, presumably to save costs, to be effective. Difficult to sleep in the heat so had to open the window which then means you get the noise from the streets

Review 75:You can not reserve parking and there is almost no place in it it's easy to get lost at first because the hotel is big

Review 76:Excellent breakfast and good staff

Review 77:Had to use a public car park since hotel car park was full. No way to pre-book space. Alternative car park not nearly as convenient as hotel (and dearer!) We have stayed at this hotel before and never had this problem before.

Review 78:Location

Review 79:Problems connecting to WiFi - maybe my problem. Generally quiet but walls were thin and could hear next room talking, light switches, water running etc. Disappointing as this didn't match the other standards of the hotel.

Review 80:Ambience, location and general facilities. Garage was adjacent and good, if a little expensive.

Review 81:It's hard to control the room temperature. We had to open the windows to keep the room from getting warm.

Review 82:I like the spaciousness of this hotel, it's lobby atrium, the glass-encased breakfast atrium, the hallways, the balconies viewing the main lobby. It also has a sense of history that gives it character.

Review 83:No English language TV news channel in a 4* hotel! Common area was a cafe, which made me unwilling to use it since I didn't want a drink.

Review 84:Beautiful old palace.

Review 85:The heating was too strong so we had to open the window to cool down the room.

Review 86:The location opposite the cathedral. It was good to have parking underneath the hotel. Rooms were large and clean and comfortable.

Review 87:Que un hotel tan profesional como este no pueda cobrarme de la tarjeta e-shopping visa, sino que me haga pagar en metálico. That a hotel so profesional as this couldnt take the money from my visa e-shopping card. Finally I had to pay in cash.

Review 88:Su pasado histórico y cultural. Its historic and cultural past, its heritage.

Review 89:Rooms were small and disappointing. Sound traveled through doors too easily. Took 3 passes driving by the hotel to finally find the parking lot - As you drive by the hotel (on the right), there is a small Parking sign on an alley immediately past the hotel entrance (on the right). You have to stop in the alley and then walk in to register, as you'll need the room key to open the underground garage door. Parking is extremely tight within the one floor parking and the hotel charges per night. As mentioned in the "pros", we were there for New Year's Eve, but were unable to attend the party. Unfortunately, we were charged for attendance ($150 each) as part of the reservation (understood at the time), but because of the loud rock band playing in the atrium from 12 midnight until 5 am, we got no sleep. Doors were thin, hotel was warm for winter, had to open windows, etc.

Review 90:Hotel was pleasant although only one staff member was able to speak English. Underground parking available (but you have to REALLY want to find the entrance when you are arriving). Hotel seems to know how to throw a party.. we were there over New Years and the party ran until 5AM.

Review 91:Restaurant overpriced, I couldn't get wifi to work on apple devices, while it was working fine on my colleague android.

Review 92:Impressive building, nice staff, very nice rooms. It was a short stay but surely positive.

Review 93:the restaurant staff were poor. the products available did not cater for vegetarians and we had to wait for over an hour for our food which was a simple rissotto

Review 94:the reception girl went out of her way to be helpful but the other staff were not quite as willing

Review 95:We stayed one night in Palacio de los Velada in November 2014. This hotel occupies the palace built in XV-XVI century and situated in historical center of Avila, just fifty meters from the Cathedral. All historical places such as Cathedral, Basilica San Vicente, Romanesque Churches of San Tome the Old and San Pedro are in walking distance from the hotel, just in the neighborhood. Hotel has two wonderful patios, first one is housing the restaurant and second the breakfast hall. All staff was speaking fluent English, very polite and very helpful. Room was excellent, with very comfortable furniture and equipped with TV set, air conditioner, refrigerator with mini bar. Bath room and toilet were equipped with the bathtub and bidet. There was real home atmosphere in this hotel. Choice of food in the restaurant was plentiful and food itself delicious. So, my conclusion is, if I will come to Avila once again then I definitely will stay in Palacio de los Velada. We felt there as at our own home. Thanks to all personnel for that.

Review 96:The Courtyard has been roofed over with glass and that has created a lovely dining and drinking area as shown in all the pictures but it was hot, humid and stuffy and needed ventilation.

Review 97:Located right on the Cathedral plaza the location was perfect. Parking was only two blocks into the walled city which made it easy to find and navigate. The room was large and spacious though we were on a side wing with no view and considerable street noise. The bed was softer than we prefer but that is a matter of taste.

Review 98:The hotel was excellent, everything in this beautiful city is within easy walking distance and a delight for lovers of Spain and its heritage. After a day in town it was nice to relax in the atrium with a book and people watch. We were given a room on the top floor at the far end of the corridor which was quiet but only having a skylight had no view, but never the less the room was first class.

Review 99:Nothing, everything was great.

Review 100:This is a grand hotel that used to be the palace of a the Velada family. The central courtyard is wonderful. The location could not be better, next to the cathedral. It even has its own parking garage below ground.

Review 101:We stayed Saturday night and the noise from the street went on till 4 am

Review 102:Beautiful hotel right in the centre of town. Close to bars and restaurants, shopping and sightseeing. Comfortable. Great breakfast.

Review 103:Our room was close to cleaning and laundry cupboards so was rather noisy at times. Also quite a bit of early and late noise from kitchens/lift. I wasn't aware that it was part of a small group of hotels until we arrived (thought it was an individual operation).

Review 104:Excellent Location just within the walls. Broad selection of Breakfast. It felt quite corporate and professional but was also able to cater for the individual guests.

Review 105:Fairly impersonal - but large busy hotel so not surprising.

Review 106:Splendid building igreat location adjacent to Avila cathedral and with handy underground parking. Comfortable bedrooms. Beautiful courtyard bar/restaurant. Great breakfast buffet - only place we stayed in Spain with a cheaper continental breakfast option.

Review 107:The neighbors in the ajoining room, I believe, spoke in normal volumes, but it was as if they were in our room standing by our bed. At one point we even turned on our T.V. for ambient noise to block out their conversations. We could hardly fault them. We did call down to the front desk to report it.

Review 108:I think that this is a fabulous hotel for ambiance, quality food fare, pricing and location.

Review 109:The people in the reception area are arrogant and all personnel in general are not focused on giving their best attention to their CLIENTS. They think that staying inside the walls of Avila and the palace itself should be enough and travelers should be thankful to stay there. They should remember all this luxury is possible because we pay for it. Period.

Review 110:The building is beautiful, the rooms are very nice, well decorated/furnished hallways. Bathrooms are well appointed. Location is superb. Breakfast was ok.

Review 111:The restaurant i recommendable. The room was charming. The staff was friendly and accommodating and still very professional. We enjoyed ourselves very much and preferred getting our food and drinks at the hotel.

Review 112:Excellent hotel. Location is ideal. Clean and well appointed room. Gorgeous historic lobby/atrium area, perfect to enjoy a snack or coffee. Charming historic hotel, Highly Recommend!

Review 113:Wonderful location inside walled city near the cathedral. Tremendous value at the rate we paid for our online booking. Parking in the hotel basement at an additional charge.

Review 114:Good staff ,great location within city walls.Parking not good offsite but we could of unloaded bags in front of hotel instead of doing Brit thing of obeying traffic signs.Wonderfull old building brought tastefully up to date.

Review 115:The staff was impersonal and often close to unhelpful - e.g. over a non-smoking room that stank of smoke: "Try an air-spray" ( I eventually did get a clean-smelling room) - though not actually rude. One young man was charming and in fact kindly lent me his umbrella!, but I had a strong impression that what they liked and wanted were tour groups/ conferees, not solo travellers. The architecture of what was probably a fine palace has been completely ruined- many such conversions in Spain have been beautifully done - the decor was pretentious and stylistically inappropriate, and it was disappointing to have no view but a plastic roof.

Review 116:Perfect location. Good level of comfort.

Review 117:food in restaurant was good, although selection should be more than what is on the menu, room was clean and staff was friendly and ready to help! will stay again next time we visit!

Review 118:nothing

Review 119:We could n't believe the quality of this hotel given the cost. A beautiful building with excellent facilities and fantastic rooms that in the UK would be 5 star and very expensive. Secure underground parking and exactly in the centre of this beautiful medieval town opposite the cathedral. Simply amazing value and the best hotel we stayed in on our 3 week tour.

Review 120:This question has no relevance

Review 121:This was an incredible hotel for the money and easily beats any five-star we have booked. We were lucky to have been able to book it. It is a beautiful hotel and just a few steps from the cathedral. We have been going to Europe since 1974 and this is one of the best.

Review 122:Room on the second floor (probably ex servants quarters) was dingy with a tiny window which looked out onto a back street, immediately above the rubbish bins, the use of which produced a lot of noise. This was especially apparent in the early hours of the morning when the bins were emptied.

Review 123:Beautiful location in the 'Plaza del Catedral.

Review 124:Grumpy staff on reception. No assistance offered with baggage. Room had a rather musty smell with view of roof.

Review 125:The location and the fact it has(expensive) parking. Good value dining room.

Review 126:Nothing!

Review 127:This hotel is fab. The rooms are massive, so is the bed and bathroom. So quiet, you will have a great nights sleep. Right next to everything. The central lounge is huge and very pretty.

Review 128:Cost of buffet breakfast seemed a bit steep at 13 Euros. No safe in room although reception put valuables in their safe.

Review 129:Internal appearance. Very good staff. Quiet rooms - church bells only opened up from 8 a.m. Very comfortable all round.

Review 130:Great location when visiting Avila. Take a taxi to front door, not possible at all locations inside wall. Walk to everything and have a nice evening meal at the hotel. Great staff very helpful

Review 131:- the carpeting is as old as Avila - the room had a skylight just on top of the bed. No way you could sleep beyond 7 AM, plus that night we had a full moon! - No one to help you with the bags to/from your room. The bell hop starts at 9:30 AM.

Review 132:- Love the location and some of its architecture (old palace.) - Very spacious room.

Review 133:hotel is a high turnover mostly group tourism "sleep over factory"; impersonal atmosphere, other than the courtyard of the historic palace, the hotel has no charm and the staff are o.k. but not more. In fact the place is more like a superior 3 star factory that claims 4 stars as it is in a good spot and has a restaurant/bar...

Review 134:Location in the center of town, scenic courtyard, reasonably nice room

Review 135:Stayed here for a weekend in August, Whilst there are a few elements of the decor that may be a little old fashioned, this was a convenient, comfortable and well managed hotel.
