Reviews for La Mere Champlain
Review 1:Superior sea view room, wonderful view watching the oyster farmers bringing the oysters in. Perfect location for seafood restaurants. Can't wait to return.
Review 2:Parking is limited at peak times and you must pay between 11am and 8 pm.
Review 3:excellent room with fantastic views with excellent restaurant. Very good location on seafront and with access to all of town.
Review 4:Great location on the seafront Spacious & beautifully decorated room with sea views Large modern bathroom with a bath which was a real treat Fabulous restaurant serving amazing seafood Friendly & helpful staff
Review 5:The person who represented the hotel staff was excellent, but the restaurant crew were pretty much all rather rude. We seldom have problems as we try to just fit in with what is going on, but it just was uncomfortable from the moment we arrived in the afternoon and just wanted to take a short break for drinks before walking on. The restaurant folks made it quite clear we were really not welcome just for drinks, but seated us anyway. Not a very nice welcome for a hotel/restaurant combination. We decided to skip the hotel restaurant for dinner and went down the street to a casual place that served fantastic mussels. Very friendly and great service unlike the hotel where we were staying.
Review 6:The location was very nice other than being really very crowded. We were there on a weekend and a beautiful sunny day, so even more people were enjoying the seaside and great restaurants like we were. About 6:00 though, the crowds seemed to start to thin out. The next morning, the location was pretty empty when we left. We had a lovely view from our window. We loved the oyster experience nearby! Quite fun and one of the reasons we came to Cancale in the first place. The hotel worked perfectly for that reason.
Review 7:The wifi was problematic. The staff was simply ok, but that could simply be contributed to the face that we spoke no French.
Review 8:Loved the size or the room and the location.
Review 9:parking - non at hotel - lots on sea front outside (paying) - however this is a very busy then and on warm sunny day car park was full - had to park 5 mins walk up away hill. not even anywhere to pull in to drop off bags outside hotel.
Review 10:right on sea front - great view over harbour/ bay from 'sea view' room. nice bed - smallish room that was ok for 1 night may be 2. right by stalls selling freshest oysters ever - they will open them and provide plate & lemon - an absolute must do note in my ratings - I only give excellent if something is really noteworthy.
Review 11:Breakfast was very good but a bit pricey, but I'm being picky as it's probably in line with other hotels.
Review 12:Lovely hotel, with beautiful view over the bay from bedroom. Had a great meal in the hotel restaurant on first night. Fruit de mere and perfectly cooked fish. Highly recommend this hotel.
Review 13:Room rather hot as there is no air conditioning and we were staying on what seemed to be the hottest day of the year!
Review 14:Lovely view across the bay from our room and a little balcony to survey the scene We were catching the Brittany Ferry from St Malo the next morning. The journey takes less than 30 minutes from Cancale and is perfect for a 10.30 am ferry.
Review 15:We would have given the hotel a perfect score if it wasn't for a few small things. The most notable of these was that the carpet in our room was rather musty and because of the proximity to the ocean, it smelled like the inside of a boat if the windows were shut. It dissipated pretty quickly when we did open it up, but it was a significant odor whenever we came back to the room.
Review 16:The location and room are amazing. Watching the tides come in and out right from the bed and hearing the ocean was outstanding. The staff was incredibly helpful and pleasant and the restaurant attached to the hotel was great too. The room which we had, the balcony right at the corner has to be the most dramatic of the rooms in terms of the view, but it does need some TLC (see the bad points). The location of the hotel is right in the heart of the seaside and you can walk all along the boardwalk, pick up oysters at the shacks, have a crepe at a neighboring creperie, etc.
Review 17:camera troppo piccola (nonostante non avessimo scelto la più economica) niente parcheggio (solo a pagamento)
Review 18:Abbiamo scelto questo albergo per la sua posizione davanti il mare.
Review 19:The breakfast was a little sober, but it wasn´t so expensive either.
Review 20:Great stay, great cuisine, super location, at the harbour/beach. near the other restaurants and tourist shops.
Review 21:Breakfast buffet good but in continental style, no hot food.
Review 22:Cute room (no 33) with double bed and extra bed on loft. A window towards cancale main street, and spacious bathroom for beeing a small place. Comfy bed. Super fast check in and check out. Parking on street nearby on the main street.
Review 23:Wifi can be used on only 1 appliance and there is literally nothing in the room but a bed, a wardrobe and a bathroom! Not even a cup, a plate, cutlery or even a plate!
Review 24:We stayed at La Mere Champlain for 5 days whilst in Cancale. The room was extremely basic, nothing more than a bed, a bathroom and a balcony with a view, but the View is what you stay here for! To wake up overlooking the freshest of mornings by the sea in this beautiful part of the world is enough of a reason to stay here. It's in perfect proximity to all the hotspots of Cancale and parking is doable on a side street from the hotel. Recommend for a relaxing, beautiful and simple getaway.
Review 25:There was no dedicated hotel staff. You had to go the restaurant downstairs to get needs addressed. The room was a little expensive for the quality. You re paying for the waterfront access
Review 26:Location in the heart of Cancale , in the middle of the waterfront
Review 27:We did find it difficult to find as our Sat Mav did not recognise the street name.
Review 28:Our room had balcony and windows opening on two sides of the room so as well as lovely views it was possible to get the room temperature perfect.
Review 29:We had booked a superior room with balcony & seaview for two nights but unfortunately there was a problem with the bathroom in our allocated room so we had a regular room the first night & the superior room for the second. The staff were mostly apologetic & did their best to sort out the problem. We were charged at a slightly lower rate for the first night (although not as low as your quoted rate for that type of room) & given a free breakfast each. Yes it was disappointing but they did both apologise & sort out the problem so we will return again as it remains one of our favourite hotels.
Review 30:Great views across the bay.
Review 31:There was no one in charge in view of the size of the hotel. Dinner was a joke although we had a nice waiter it needed a head waiter when looking at the costs of meals and wine
Review 32:Location of hotel and sea view other than that will not be going back
Review 33:The inevitable noise from the working oyster farmers, driving up & down past the hotel, plus early deliveries in noisy vans. The ceiling in our room under the eaves, had very little head room in places, especially above the lavatory. Not good for anyone above 4 feet tall !
Review 34:Good to be in the middle of the port, surrounded by places to eat. Very good restaurant in the hotel. Set menus excellent value.
Review 35:I felt all the staff were unfriendly and grumpy (apart from the blonde lady who helped check us in) If you wanted something it felt like it was a chore
Review 36:The location is fantastic and the food is excellent
Review 37:Room very small, though it did have a balcony. €171 seemed a lot.
Review 38:Location, food, view from room. Good value breakfast, busy restaurant with good service and ambience.
Review 39:seafood very disappointing lobster - soft shell, half empty crab - watery should have complained on the night
Review 40:very comfortable bed excellent shower
Review 41:Although the hotel has many rooms, it's more a restaurant than a hotel. No lobby, check in at the restaurant, etc. Rooms are a bit tired although bathrooms have been nicely renovated recently. All that said, it's probably still the best available lodging directly on the harbor.
Review 42:Mere Champlain is right in the middle of all the harbor action in Cancale. Location wouldn't be better and the town is great fun, with a real holiday vibe and terrific oysters and other seafood.
Review 43:Difficult to let out your luggage from the car near to the hotel.
Review 44:The seeview from our room (superior seeview) was very good with abalcony above the busy quai. Very quiet in nighttime. Breakfast ok,but not phenomenal. Large P-areas (reasonable prices, 7Euro/day) nearby.
Review 45:The receptionist checking us in and again out was not friendly and welcoming at all. She offered no information or even a smile!
Review 46:Location excellent and view from our room amazing. The balcony area opened to the adjacent room which was occupied by other members of our family.
Review 47:Fantastic location and food
Review 48:Having to come home again
Review 49:Great food and excellent location
Review 50:Fantastic position in Cancale, easy parking at reduced rates and helpful friendly staff.
Review 51:Beautiful location
Review 52:The room though small, was perfectly formed.
Review 53:Had to close the curtains when changing. In full view of the road with no privacy. Glass bathroom door!
Review 54:Good restaurant. Great location.
Review 55:Staff closed up a too early in the evening
Review 56:Ideal location
Review 57:Carpet dirty
Review 58:Location
Review 59:All was perfect
Review 60:Location view room space ! Bed too
Review 61:the location
Review 62:Very expensive, with no tea making facilities, kettle.
Review 63:The view.
Review 64:Small room. No kettle for tea. Breakfast poor value. Coffee awful.
Review 65:location next to coast although it was a little window so we couldnt see out unless we stood by the window. Clean comfy room.
Review 66:No wifi during our stay
Review 67:Nice place..nice hostess
Review 68:Perfect location for a visit to Cancalle and exceptional restaurant.

Review 78:Our room was smallish
Review 79:Food in the hotel is amazing and a room with the sea views
Review 80:The breakfast is amazing! We had it delivered to the room. The room was spacious and the bed tres comfortable.
Review 81:Surly receptionist
Review 82:The view fro the restaurant
Review 83:pour la prochaine fois vue sur la mere
Review 84:The restaurant, with best choice of seafood in the area.
Review 85:miniscule bathroom with minimum facilities

Review 88:Location was excellent and the views magnificent
Review 89:Sea food platter very good

Review 92:- staffs are not bad but not so good as well - carpets are old and dirty...
Review 93:large and beautiful sea view
Review 94:No car park
Review 95:The best restaurant we've been to in all France
Review 96:No parking nearby.
Review 97:Great location. Good family room.
Review 98:Very good location, fantastic views and very friendly staff. Seafood at the restaurant was really good.
Review 99:Staff wasn't very helpful no tourist information for English speaking people
Review 100:The location was excellent
Review 101:Nothing. Lovely hotel in great location.
Review 102:The view from the room was amazing. Wonderful to see the world go by.
Review 103:no private parking
Review 104:room was lovely, restaurant very good
Review 105:Nothing to dislike.
Review 106:Excellent location and very clean. Happily has an elevator. We arrived on a very hot, sunny afternoon and the town was very busy. Difficult to find parking nearby but managed to park outside on flashers to unload. Permanent free parking on hill beside hotel and in nearby municipal car park from 10 pm to 10am. Excellent and very popular restaurant - decent breakfast. All in all a very pleasant stay.
Review 107:Parking but it is the same with nearly all Cancale hotels due to the popularity of the village, not just here. Planning is required to drop luggage off and move the car to the nearest car park when the day trippers have gone. Wet room is fine but a shelf for toiletries would be preferable to having to put them on the closed loo lid!
Review 108:Fantastic location right on the port/quayside and above the seafood restaurants. We paid extra for a room with a balcony and glad we did so as it was a gorgeous sunny day and it was lovely sitting above the hustle/bustle of the quayside and looking over the bay.
Review 109:A wonderful place to stay , great proximity to mont st michel.Enjoyed an oyster feast, lovely walks with a great vista waking up to the tide changes All our rooms were lovely and the meals wonderful
Review 110:No dislikes - the brilliant location precludes private hotel parking. Some staff at breakfast time were polite, but could have been more welcoming and SMILED !
Review 111:great location with magnificent views of bay. Comfortable room with plenty of storage space for 2 and good-sized bathroom with walk-in shower. Pay-parking available close by with spaces most times of the day in late may. Restaurant good (but so are many along the promenade).
Review 112:Tthe hotel does not have loby. The loby is the cashier of the restaurant situated at the first floor. They regards you and tell your room is in the upper floor follow this corridor at the end you will find the elevator, at the end of such corridor you find the elevator and the back door of the kitchen, totally open, every thing smelled like a kitchen, including elevator and rooms corridor.
Review 113:Nothing. It was so bad that I did not stay in the hotel. I paid two nights . You have to recover one at least. I totally disagree that someone reserve x number of days and the hotel charge all days in advance. Please let me know how are you going to reintegrate the secon day.
Review 114:There is no parking so you have to use the pay carpark opposite. This is free from 8.0pm until 11.0am
Review 115:A very good location just up from the Oyster stands. You can eat a dozen opened Oysters for €5.50. They were excellent. Cancale is small but the Hotel is in an excellent spot
Review 116:Nothing comes to mind. We all really liked this hotel.
Review 117:Location fabulous. Plus dinner in their restaurant was very pleasant surprise. Excellent cuisine!
Review 118:We were on bycles and there was nowhere to keep them overnight. The reception staff were very dismissive and we were told to use the car park across the road!
Review 119:The location and view were excellent. Very convenient for the bars and restraunts etc.
Review 120:As in many other hotels, the bathroom was a bit over-designed andimpractically. For example it was imposssible to take a shower withoutto wet the whole bathroom. There weas only place for one suitcasedispite is was a doubleroom. But tis was details. Ther hotel is to berecommended.
Review 121:Nicve hotel with excellent location and seaview.
Review 122:Difficulty parking near to hotel. Room a bit on the expensive side. Not sure if this represents best value
Review 123:Location. Harbour views. Choice and quality of restaurant. Good break point between Caen and western Brittany
Review 124:the lack of wi fi, but as i welcome the break from work its not a big issue to me
Review 125:the food is excellent, staff obliging, have stayed here 3 times before and eaten here many other times, i visit he area often and will go back to Mere Champlain
Review 126:Great location across the street from the beach. We had an amazing view of the ocean. The room was clean and comfortable. The breakfast was $10 each and was a really nice buffet. I would highly recomment this hotel.
Review 127:Lovely hotel overlooking the sea with friendly and helpful staff and excellent food. Since our last stay two or three years ago the breakfast has improved enormously and is excellent value for money. It is about half an hour from St Malo so very convenient for the morning ferry to Portsmouth.
Review 128:There is no bar in the hotel and no place to simply sit and relax (lounge).
Review 129:Harbour view and the restaurant are awesome. The room was small, but cosy. The shower is huge! Free parking is available between Nov 15 and March 15.
Review 130:Very friendly helpful staff in ideal situation overlooking beach . Room and en suite recently refurbished and very comfortable . Excellent restaurant serving wonderful seafood at very reasonable prices . If arriving by car remember that there is only public parking which is barrier controlled and cost 5 euro day,you may have to walk a couple of hundred yds. We would thoroughly recommend this to anyone
