Reviews for Hôtel West End Promenade des Anglais

Review 1:Hotel generally requires refurbishment and it shows just about everywhere. Room was quite small. Breakfast very disappointing and not worth the money. Recommend a nearby coffee shop.

Review 2:Great location and very friendly staff.

Review 3:The person that checked us in was not that friendly and on top of that he took us to our room which wasn't cleaned yet. The other room that was offered was very small with a bed other then we had asked for. Carpet throughout hotel needed a good rinsing.

Review 4:Location, location

Review 5:Great location! Updated rooms were a nice surprise considering the age of the hotel. Staff spoke flawless English, which was appreciated. All in all an excellent experience. We would stay here again!

Review 6:Professional staff, high standard of Reception and domestic staff. Assistance of Concierge, A standard has been set by management and staff are motivated to achieve this. Excellent breakfast menu.

Review 7:Location could not have been better . It was a very heart of Nice. Hotel was classy, stylish, I loved my room with the little balcony with a sea view, espetially at sunsets.

Review 8:Over priced. Our privilege room was more like a basic room and not like the photos on web site. Very small and basic. Complementary biccies / sweeties were €5.00 each and not told about this. Given that out of season they could charge less

Review 9:Very clean and staff very helpful. Beautiful hotel and great location.

Review 10:We only paid 20 euro for the taxi from the airport to the hotel when we arrived. When leaving we asked reception to call us a taxi. when we got to the airport they said the fare was 40 euro. I queried this and said we had only paid 20 euro when we arrived and was told that as the hotel had called the taxi you have to pay tax. A con but what could we do. Beware get your own cab. The hotel made no mention of this when we asked for the taxi.

Review 11:We stayed in early November. The weather was beautiful and the hotel upgraded our room to a sea view which was wonderful. Small room but very modern and clean. The hotel is in a fantastic location and would definitely stay there again .

Review 12:The coffee at breakfast could have been better.

Review 13:We appreciated most the wonderful setting on the Promenade des Anglais, the courtesy and helpfulness of the staff, and the superb state of maintenance of the hotel. After a sunless summer in Britain it was a dream come true.

Review 14:Rooms are really not high enough for someone above, let's say 1.80 m. Had to bend to fit under the shower... My room was next to the elevator, not the best experience.

Review 15:Staff is trying hard. Friendly and eager to help when and where they can.

Review 16:The breakfast room was consistently overcrowded which resulted in having to sit outside when the weather wasn't particularly good. There wasn't enough indoor tables and there seemed to be a shortage of cutlery and cups.

Review 17:The staff were very helpful and good

Review 18:A sea view would have been better than the wall the window looked onto

Review 19:The location was great and the room was clean. The a Taff were very helpful but the restaurant and bar closed too early.

Review 20:Hairdryer and whirlpool out of work, bad wifi connection, complained about hairdryer: no reaction. Too many pigeons disturbing the breakfast outside.

Review 21:Big room, bed comfortable, balcony with fabulous view (seaside).

Review 22:The balconies were too small to sit on.The bathroom had not been updated in probably 20 years and there was no shaver point, plug or full length mirror. The public areas are extremely jaded.Too expensive for the quality.

Review 23:The location is excellent as are the staff and the bed in our suite was heaven.

Review 24:However, the room we were given was old fashioned with a horrible dirty carpet. The whole room needed to be refurbished with dressing table, as there was no mirror, having to use the bathroom. Also new chairs as the ones we had were awful. There was no side table to put the Tea/Coffee Tray for our bedtime drink.

Review 25:We paid extra for a Superior Room with a sea view as we were celebrating our 55th Anniversary and this was the best thing about our room as the views both by day and night were fabulous.

Review 26:Would have liked room overlooking beach - but that was probably more $. I wish they had shuttles to train station, airport, or bus and tram pick-up spots, lots of walking to those areas.

Review 27:Nice location on beach, good service - staff arranged tour for us with short notice, which helps since I don't speak French fluently

Review 28:Elevator is slow. Small but this Is Europe

Review 29:Location, location, location. Very friendly helpful staff - all spoke English. Very nice buffet breakfast with huge assortment

Review 30:The lifts were out of order most of the time. The WIFI was also not working during the first 2 days of our visit.

Review 31:Great location! Great view from the room (room with sea view).

Review 32:Hotel needs a refurbishment. Shag Pile carpets in room very grubby walls grubby. Carpet in public areas very worn. Faded grandeur

Review 33:Location was excellent

Review 34:The staff is terrible, rude and unhelpful. The wi-fi didn't worked during all our stay. The elevators didn't work either (and our room was on the 5th floor). The building is very old and needing maintenance and the rooms are small and old. The bed and pillows are uncomfortable. We hated this hotel.

Review 35:The ONLY good thing about this hotel is the location, right in front of the sea in a nice area of Promenade des Anglais.

Review 36:Was first offered probably the worst room in the hotel - with a great view of scaffolding and a wall. Room immediately changed upon request. Food service is outsourced - waited 2 hours (they'd lost the order) eventually received the wrong order.

Review 37:Some of the staff were helpful and friendly. Great location.

Review 38:No Wifi for over 24 hours One lift permanently out of action. 2nd lift out of action for two hours on last day. Insufficient information in room about hotel facilities and the local area

Review 39:Location and view from junior suite were excellent Food - very good

Review 40:Great location and quiet enough, superior room was just acceptable would not return as it falls short of modern standards, don't expect too much and you will not be disappointed.

Review 41:WIFI is poor quality. We had 2 rooms. One with sea view was great and the other was with older style not so good.

Review 42:Room with sea view and modern facility. It was great!! Private beach (extra cost), very handy.

Review 43:As this was a special trip for my wife and I to celebrate our 25th anniversary I booked a junior suite. My wife simply loved it. The sea view was marvelous and the room itself was large. Staff were friendly though we didn't spend too much time in the hotel itself. We had a fantastic weekend and the hotel provided a very good base.

Review 44:It was a sad and tired property, the property deserves an owner that is willing to keep the property in a fabulous 5 star condition and an operator who can deliver high standards of service and quality. The building has 5 star potential but is being operated as a 3 star hotel.

Review 45:Excellent location and the staff were friendly, but the staff just didn't understand quality service, they would happily walk past you while your dragging you heavy suitcases up the front hotel entrance stairs and accross the lobby and it wasn't because they wanted to ignore you or give you bad service they honestly just didn't know any better. The manager told us the hotel was the oldest grandest hotel on the sea front in Nice but nobody talks about them they only talk about the Negresco, he honestly didn't realise that the reason why is that the Negresco has maintained luxury hotel standards of service and quality and they are now a million miles away from the standard of hotel

Review 46:The staff were incompitent and slow. The room was small and basic. The price was extortionate and unreasonable.

Review 47:The location was good, but that was only positive because Nice is a beautiful place

Review 48:The hotel was very authentic French and although there was some work being done to the inside it wasn't intrusive. Our room however was pretty small and had obviously recently been redecorated as there was a strong smell of paint. We had a peek into some of the other rooms whilst we were walking down the corridors and they were being cleaned and they were much nicer and bigger than ours!! We would have paid extra to have a better room.

Review 49:The hotel was in an excellent location right on the Promenade des Anglais so couldn't be better for walking into Vieux Nice and seeing all the sights. Breakfast was fab and very good value - especially if you book in advance as then only €12 per person per day. The room was clean and had everything we needed, ironing room also available. Staff were knowledgable and friendly.

Review 50:Poor but expensive breakfasts. Chaotic and badly managed, with food, crockery and cutlery routinely running out.

Review 51:Ideal location, spacious comfortable room, breathtaking view, helpful unobtrusive staff.

Review 52:The WIFI was very slow, a sheet rather than a doona would be a better option in warm weather

Review 53:The quality of the room was great, the location and the view along the beach was spectacular

Review 54:The breakfast was disappointing. Very little choice in the hot foods provided, very uncomfortable chairs and quite crowded with little space to move. Staff often more interested in chatting to one another especially the senior staff. This was the most expensive hotel we stayed in in France and we expected more variety. Coffee was undrinkable.

Review 55:the view from our room was fantastic

Review 56:The location overlooking the water was excellent and the hotel had an opulent feel. The junior suite that we stayed in was spacious and including 2 welcoming baskets that made us feel like VIPs. The bath was clean and marble-tiled with excellent amenities.

Review 57:breakfast was a little "to basic" . it lacked more choices of diffent beads and sweets...

Review 58:the clean look of the refurbished rooms and bathrooms, location and friendly and helpful service

Review 59:Safety = 0, standard rooms of city view are overlooking just hotel walls and disturbing sound of conditioning when window is opened. Breakfast is horrible, hotel definitely needs renovation.

Review 60:Just location.

Review 61:We had a very good experience. However, the lobby was very dated and could be updated with minimal cost.

Review 62:The staff (especially Reception) were great, The restaurant one of the best, our top floor suite with wraparound terrace was exceptional.

Review 63:The staff were indifferent to our problems. I booked two rooms, one was a duplex which had two separate A/C controls. The lower A/C was not working and they didn't have a technician to see what's the problem even though it was Friday and the time was around 5pm. They brought a fan and hooked it up at the side lamp outlet which meant that each time you turn of the main light switch, the fan went off! The result was that my wife slept with all the lights on! I discovered the problem the following day as I was sleeping in the other room. Any decent employee would have told you about this situation after he hooked the fan so that you were aware of it. My mattress was the worst I have ever slept on, completely worthless and should have been thrown away from a long time. I asked the reception to change it and their answer was that they don't have another one! I guess they expected me to go and buy a matress. They completely ruined my stay in Nice. Another funny/sad thing is that they have an iron room in the basement! If you need to iron a garment, you go all the way down to the basement and iron it! What a waste of money as I paid over 3000 Euros for 6 nights. Finaly, house keeping were talking and chatting in the hallway waking you up early.

Review 64:Location, probably this is all what the hotel has.

Review 65:Sometimes the the white tiled floor and bathroom floor could have been cleaner.

Review 66:Beautiful modern room, with the position on 5th floor corner giving a fabulous view of Promenade de Anglais .Though the beach is rather treacherous with a shore break and pebbles, it is lovely to look at.Most enjoyable 4 days.

Review 67:This is a classical hotel offering a modern service. The staff were friendly and accommodating and the room was lovely - spacious, clean and comfortable.

Review 68:This hotel has no bar although they advertise one in their promotional materials. The public rooms are tired and in need of refurbishment.

Review 69:The bedroom was modern with a great sea view from the small balcony. Bathroom was small but we'll fitted with good towels and nice toiletries.

Review 70:The noise.

Review 71:Great location but be prepared for lots of noise. Right on the promenade and the vehicle noise doesn't stop. Also they do a lot of beach work almost daily. That equals noise early in the morning.

Review 72:In my view, Euro 25 for car parking was expensive

Review 73:Fabulous room on 6th floor with views across the harbour. The breakfast was excellent and catered for all tastes. The bathroom was enormous, beautifully equipped with towels and gowns that were of the highest quality The staff were all friendly but very efficient

Review 74:The room we had was a great size and really good layout, however it was extremely dated in appearance and slightly disappointing considering the cost of the hotel. The shag pile carpet and peeling wall paper weren't a particularly attractive feature. Only one plug socket in the room seemed to work as well which made life a little difficult. We spotted a similar room down the corridor which we could see as it was being cleaned. It was a little annoying to know we'd paid the same cost as the people in the updated room. The breakfast isn't exactly 4* quality. It would be much nicer served in the hotel, rather than a much too hot marquee. On both occasions we went for breakfast many items had run out. The actual breakfast selection isn't great either.

Review 75:The location of the hotel is excellent. The hotel staff were friendly and extremely helpful.

Review 76:The hotel is a "little" faded, but the price is very competitive, it's clean, well-managed, the rooms and beds are fine, the bathrooms updated, etc. Good Value for Money compared to some of the other "aging queens" of the Promenade Des Anglais

Review 77:I believe the front desk staff may be some of the most professional and competent in Nice. Both the day staff and night staff were all skilled professionals who know how to handle guest inquiries of all types, both business and possibly more tourist related.

Review 78:The wi-fi was really, really bad. Very slow, you had to log in continuously and - too often - you couldn´t connect at all. If you need a reasonably good wi-fi you shouldn´t stay at West End

Review 79:The room set up was not practical. Toilet downstairs by the entrance door, bathroom upstairs, need to go upstairs to wash the hands or to use facility for coffee.

Review 80:On the main road, Central location. Staff are friendly.

Review 81:Bathroom renovated and looks very sharp. However, shower and tub combination is very dangerous. Only a half panel of glass protects the bathroom floor from the shower going everywhere. Bath tub very slippery to walk on. Nothing to hold on to.

Review 82:Hotel like 10 grand old lady. Rooms we stayed in where nicely renovated. But see next section concerning bath room.

Review 83:The staff were very unfriendly, the rooms were very dusty so much so that it was actually falling in chunks from the TV. The 'private beach' is very expensive and isn't in fact private, it's an independent company for which you have to pay in cash only.

Review 84:Location, although everything else made us think it could have been better staying somewhere else as the price wasn't worth it. The hotel restaurant is very nice.

Review 85:We stayed in a triple it was redone and ok not good for older people as shore and bath upstairs in loft. Walls were scuffed and looked like a leak on ceiling from tub above. My older daughter stayed with her gramma in another room carpet had cigarette burns so overal did not feel clean. Beds were comfortable and staff is awesome and go above and beyond. Very expensive accommodations but you pay for location in Nice! I didn't like that the beach had a fee and that breakfast was rediculous price. We walked around the corner for croissant tea and yogurt with fruit and granola for breakfast that cost the price for 5 people as it did for one at the hotel!

Review 86:The staff!

Review 87:The hotel was overpriced for the facilities and whilst public areas had character the room was soulless and clinical. Glad we only had one night here!

Review 88:Location

Review 89:nice was 38c so our dog did not enjoy the heat having come home to a cold and wet England!

Review 90:the air conditioning the breakfast the restaurant food sea view

Review 91:The room was small, that was not an issue for us because we only had hand luggage. The bed was really small and the free wifi is awful, don't count on it.

Review 92:Great air-conditioning, it was really hot in Nice, great bathroom, great location, you can purchase tickets to spend the day at the Blue Beach beach club, just across the hotel. The vielle ville is within 15' walk with lots of restaurants and bars. Bus 98 from airport is ridiculously easy to get to the hotel.

Review 93:WiFi is not so good. Also room is not so big, that is ok but I cannot close the door of the bathroom. We are couples and bit sad to have such room.

Review 94:Fantastic location, I booked the seaview hotel, but my girlfriend was really happy to stay in this room.

Review 95:The hotel staff are rude and horrible, especially the manager Fransisco. Our room was tiny and disgusting. The shower head kept falling and eventually fell on my foot and hurt me badly (see attached pic to show the cracked shower). The hotel refused to take any responsibility but instead just asked us to leave as they were full and couldn't change our room. After begging they changed our room which was equally bad - and we had booked superior sea view rooms. Wifi doesn't work and don't bother staying here if you want wifi. You cannot imagine how bad the bathroom is and the WC is unusable as there is no space to put your legs. See the attached pictures. Fransisco the manager was the worst of the lot. After telling him our problems he refused to cancel our reservation - we had 2 reservations as we had to check out to visit St.tropez and then return back to the hotel. After our horrible experience and the pain and suffering this nasty hotel caused me, I couldn't get myself to come back to the hotel. But Francisco said he would make our 2nd reservation 1 night (instead of the originally booked 2 nights) but he flatly refused to cancel it - even booking.com spoke twice to him but he was arrogant and rude and refused to help us, even though it was the horrid experience that kept us from coming back to the hotel. He's such an arrogant man that he actually told us - "get out and leave but I can't help you. And if you want write any review you want, our hotel is always full because of our location". Shocking! Please do yourself a favour and stay at the nearby meridian which is a fab hotel with an unbeatable location.

Review 96:The triple rooms have big differences in their quality, setting and space with the same price. We booked two triple rooms and probably got one of the best (Rm319: large sitting area, separate bed room and 2nd bedroom on the upper level with a small sitting area) and one of the worst (Rm426: dirty carpet, extremely small, no air conditioning in the back room which almost like a closet with a window). staff was able to switch us to a different room in the 2nd day.

Review 97:Location, right on the beach. free wifi, and helpful staff.

Review 98:Old hotel, poor breakfast, no value for money. Room without balcony despite that i booked a junior suite two months earlier. When i asked for another room, they said it is fully booked

Review 99:I needed a powerpoint for my hair appliance in the bathroom, or a mirror above the desk to be able to use it and see what i was doing. Would also have liked a separate sheet between the doona and bottom sheet. The bed was also terribly small for my 183 cm husband and the pillows were too hard

Review 100:great location, restaurant was enjoyable and breakfast was good in a nice location

Review 101:The Wifi was extremely slow , the non renovated rooms were pretty old and not worth the money

Review 102:the renovated room was great, staff was helpful and courteous

Review 103:we were given a dark stale smelling un refurbished room. it was very small with no view looking onto walls aprox 10ydsaway.We complained so called the manager who recognised us gave us a refurbed room which was fine

Review 104:the location the staff the clean room with good bed

Review 105:Very expensive for the sea view room and not worth the money. The sea view rooms have tiny balconies. Instead, ask for partial sea view, on the top floor. Some of those have huge balconies and offer fantastic views. Rooms were decent size, but for the Superior room with sea view (for 2 people) there was nowhere to hang towels, not a single hook in the room, or in the bathroom, and the 2 tiny balconies don't even have space for 2 people on each to sit together.

Review 106:Good location and staff, comfortable.

Review 107:The hotel is in an excellent location, staff are very friendly and helpful. It is within walking distance of restaurants, cafes and shopping. There is an elegant ambulance to this hotel; indeed a great place to stay in Nice.

Review 108:Asked for a non-smoking room but our room smelt heavily of stale tobacco, especially in the bathroom. Very tight and small. Safe was old and difficult to use. Internet was poor and dropped out frequently

Review 109:The appearance of the hotel from the outside, and its position

Review 110:No bad experience , but slightly surprised a hotel of this age did not have a bar or evening restaurant . They seem to have let the restaurant space to another provider. We didn't try it but it looked fine.

Review 111:Location Staff Decor

Review 112:Room decor tired and well used; restaurant staff friendly and helpful but food and wine mediocre and too expensive for what it was.

Review 113:Closeness to beach; the views

Review 114:Room carpet stained, although room with side sea view this is blocked in late June by tree leaves, did not think to request NONE smoking room there was a strong smell of tobacco on arrival.

Review 115:Location excellent.

Review 116:tired and shabby decor in foyer no hotel bar a couple of the reception staff were a little unhelpful and it was very overpriced for what it was would have given it a 3 star rating not the 4 star advertised

Review 117:location to the beach and fantastic sea view

Review 118:The location and view were perfect. Very central to beach, Old Town, airport, train stations and many cafes, restaurants and bars. The staff was friendly and informative about the area. Blue Beach was amazing, excellent service and beautiful beach.

Review 119:Tiny, somewhat down-at-heel bathroom. Bath needs replacing with walk-in shower. Parking is expensive but there is garage parking very near the hotel and that worked well for us.

Review 120:In the main, the hotel was luxurious and well-appointed (but so it should be for the price) . The position and general ambience were superb.

Review 121:Lifts are tiny, wifi is a little slow

Review 122:Nice location, maybe the decor could be a little more modern. Clean, quiet rooms and comfortable beds. Polite staff.

Review 123:wifi very slow no parking area for free no one help with the bags from the puplic parking, breakfast not good, staff enters the room a lot

Review 124:nice balcony very good location beautiful bathroom

Review 125:Front lobby staff was mostly rude and careless. Especially so was one named Francesco. But not the only bad one. I do not expect rude people to work at front desk, particularly if it is supposedly a nice hotel. I took one of its most expensive rooms, and still we were not treated with the attention and respect everyone deserves. When I asked for glasses for good wine (I had brought), a feature any good American chain hotel would have, this Francesco said we could only have the glasses 'if we consumed'. The room was rated at 550 euros a night! The floor had carpeting and the sensitive would smell the lingering dust. WIFI was so bad it was nearly useless.

Review 126:Only location and breakfast.

Review 127:Generally the hotel a little dated.... That maybe the style they are trying to keep but some sympathetic renovation is long overdue

Review 128:We really liked the location and the breakfast was great!

Review 129:The safety deposit box had been closed and we couldn't use it, the receptionist informed me an engineer would open it but this never happened.

Review 130:Our room was upgraded to a junior suite with a fabulous view. We arrived early and could leave our luggage while we explored the city.

Review 131:Liked the newly refurbished room on the 5th floor, liked the friendly and attentive staff. Closed the windows and external shutters and had a great night's sleep.old fashioned

Review 132:My stay was for 6 days and I asked for an upgraded room and mentioned it did not matter if I had to pay more as long as the room has a sea view. I failed to book the sea view room and take full responsibility for that, however, the young lady at the front desk left a bad impression from the first day. She did not smile not even once (which is not necessary) but goes a long way when working in a strictly customer service based industry. She then found it necessary to give me a condescending look as if I expected it to be free. The only reason I know that is because she said "We dont have any rooms available but let me check...no we dont have anything" i said ok and thanked her for checking then I asked her if there was a waiting list in case a guest cancelled or did not show. she said no, then the manager showed up and said he would check and he left to the back room. She then looked at me again and said "if there is something its not free you have to pay". I was floored but kept my cool and asked "are you in the habit of giving away free rooms?...I expect to pay like everyone else". That was the first day. After that I just avoided her and the stay was fine. The black mold in my bathroom did not help either but all in all it was a good stay. I didnt mention the mold thing until checkout because it would not have done any good since they were booked out anyway. At breakfast buffet I asked for fried eggs and was told it would cost 5-6€ extra...which I decided was not worth it and declined. the waitress later brought me the eggs and said it was free of charge. That was a nice gesture and I really appreciated it. I stay in hotels 3-4 weeks per month and many of them are of the same or better quality and some not even close depending on the country but to pay extra at a breakfast buffet was just insane and was the first time I had experienced that.

Review 133:I enjoyed the hotel as a whole. The location was great and easily accessible. The room size was also nice with mostly friendly staff.

Review 134:Rooms are more of 3* star hotel quality. We had superior room, and it wasn't great, decor very old and outdated, mould in bathroom etc. I cannot imagine what cheaper rooms look like..

Review 135:Location, sea view

Review 136:Overall the hotel has far more positives than any very small negatives. The only thing I could complain about is the cleaning staff that were very loud in the hall starting at around 7:30 or 8:00 am. Having a lie in wasn't in the cards for us. We were located by a maids closet and service elevator so some noise would be expected but it was the loud talking that was annoying.

Review 137:There is no question that the best thing the hotel has going for it is its location. The private beach across the street was wonderful. A beautiful grand building that is in need of just bit of touching up. We really enjoyed our stay.
