Reviews for Hotel Altamira

Review 1:Great hotel with amazing internal decoration and architecture. It is loctaed in the center of the village. The room we stayed in was cosy and very big. The breakfast could be improved.

Review 2:The beds weren't very comfortable and you can hear neighbors above and next to you making noise but never voices. Considering the setting and the history I'm ok with the noise, the beds could use an upgrade though.

Review 3:Location, location, location!! What a cool old building. Truly felt the history and beauty of the time. They were filming a tv show with period costumes that made the whole town feel like a film set, hard to believe it's real.

Review 4:breakfast ok but a bit basic. no lift. bed not very comfortable

Review 5:good position, quiet, beautiful building, good value.lovely village, good bars and restaurants

Review 6:Did not plan enough time for a visit! Rooms smelled a little musty- not there long enough to get fresh air into the room- it may have been better on a clear day- we had showers.

Review 7:Beautiful old hotel right in the middle of the old city. Could not be in a better location. Easy parking

Review 8:Bed was a little hard; no internet in the rooms (only public areas, but it worked well). Minor negatives.

Review 9:Excellent location, right in the old town. Beautiful facility in an old building. Public parking not far away. Overall, an excellent facility!!

Review 10:Breakfast could have been better - cold cuts were of the cheap variety.

Review 11:A friendly hotel in a grand old palace, with simple but comfortable accommodation. Lots of comfortable common areas for guests.

Review 12:There's not much to complain about here! Our only issue is that the bed was somewhat hard and uncomfortable. There was a bit of noise from the street, but not enough to disturb.

Review 13:Wonderful historical building, so we felt like we we're rambling through an ancient manor house. We loved the common sitting room, and enjoyed relaxing and reading or doing our email there. The breakfast was typical, with cold cuts and pastries. It would be nice to see hard boiled eggs! There was easy and free parking not far away.

Review 14:The bed was a little bit not leveled and not very comptarble. We didnt report it, as we were very tired.

Review 15:location very good. breakfast nice. staff is very nice and helpfull.

Review 16:floors are just timber and can be INCREDIBLY noisy - especially if the room above (sounds like) theyre herding cattle. Wifi couldnt be accessed unless close to reception

Review 17:great location on the Camino del Norte in a charismatic town

Review 18:Acustic insulation is, simply, missing. You can hear all your neighbours like they are in your own room. But if you don't mind, the rest is beautiful!

Review 19:Location is fabulous! Interior is fabulous too!

Review 20:Santillana del Mar may be old & historic, but the most boring town visited in NW Spain. No atmosphere, music or places of interest. Shops with same overpriced produce. No exciting tapas bars. Wouldn't return or recommend.

Review 21:The breakfast was poor. I would say that it was down to the waiting staff on the morning she was not helpful and we felt that she didn't want to get anything fresh out for anyone when asked for coffee it was a trouble fir her.

Review 22:The location was great, receptionist very helpful.

Review 23:The noise. No tea/coffee in the room.

Review 24:Hotel has character in abundance, but it's very noisey (creaky floors, neighbouring rooms, street noise), so impossible to sleep. Central location good for restaurants etc.

Review 25:Good quality 3-star hotel, situated in the center of Santillana in an old historical building. Very convinient to feel the "spirit" of the famous village. Good breakfast.

Review 26:Wifi was only in public areas. I'm a light sleeper so being able to hear the radio from the shop below our room and noise from the street when we arrived and wanted a siesta prevented that but it was fine at night.

Review 27:Right in the middle of Santillana

Review 28:Wifi bandwidth was inadequate. No safe. Breakfast was dull.

Review 29:Hotel is in an old mansion with fine old oak staircases and furnishings. It is situated in the centre of the village and convenient for everything. Very helpful receptionists. Public parking nearby.

Review 30:A cosy hotel with fantastic wooden stairways and split landings. Great location in the town. I would also recommend the restaurant in the back courtyard.

Review 31:Limited choice of options at breakfast and slightly noisy at night as it's on the main street, but neither of these were a problem for us

Review 32:Fantastic converted medieval house full of atmospheric period furniture, right in the middle of the main street of Santillana. Very convenient location for sightseeing and access to restaurants. Rooms are basic, but very pleasant and the hotel has some very nice common areas for guests to relax in. We found it much nicer in person than in the photos online and great value all round.

Review 33:The hotel, location and reception staff were very good. The breakfast was average as was dinner and the staff were not particularly friendly or efficient. The glass of wine included in the menu del dia arrived after the pudding

Review 34:The coffee at breakfast was very poor! Through no fault of the hotels it was very noisy early in the morning due to the cobbled streets being cleaned.

Review 35:We liked the rustic style of the hotel

Review 36:No elevator was an issue for an older couple traveling with us. Breakfast was the worse we have had in all of Spain. The took some natural orange juice and watered it down with boxed stuff, a strict no-no in Spain! Bathrooms are very dated and in real need of an upgrade.

Review 37:lovely place. Great history of the building and very well located

Review 38:Breakfast a bit basic - yogurt would have been a welcome addition - foodtypical but would be nice to cater for people with not such a sweettooth. Wi Fi unreliable - that is not a complaint to the hotel just oneof those things

Review 39:Room, atmosphere, people, everything was good. Will certainly recommendand look forward to next visit. Staff very helpful - patient whilst Iinsisted on using my phrase book

Review 40:Breakfast was very basic. No facility to use public areas eg bar at night. No Wifi in room. Room was sparsely decorated - no paintings on walls.

Review 41:Location - near to caves and coastal towns. Historic building. Very reasonable price. Lots of places to eat and drink in town. Our bathroom was newly refurbished.

Review 42:Very classical. A bit dark. Paintings, decor, etc. Heavy and old fashioned

Review 43:Staff was very friendly. We are walking the camino. Location was very good. Comfortable. Clean.

Review 44:Nothing, however it is an old building so don't expect super fast broadband, hi-tech showers lifts etc

Review 45:Historic building, great location, helpful staff

Review 46:The internet was not available in our rooms (302 and 304), so we had to congregate in a nice lounge on the 2nd floor (or 1st floor for Europeans) or sit at the small table and chairs located outside our room. It was a minor inconvenience, but when trying to do work at night after touring during the day was a bit frustrating.

Review 47:The staff were AMAZING at Hotel Altamira. The town was nearly deserted when we went (late January), so most of the restaurants were closed. El Cossia (I think that is the correct spelling) was a good place for a quick and inexpensive place to eat. Breakfast at the Hotel Altamira was a generous continental spread with plenty of pastries, breads, cereals, and coffee.

Review 48:No dislikes. In the winter the restaurant is closed, but as the number of residents is low at this time and there is always a restaurant open within a very short distance it is understandable

Review 49:Central location, excellent staff and interesting wood-beamed interiors with colourful rugs and good heating in winter, We visit Santillana 3-4 times a year and this is a very good central hotel, Parking restrictions apply in the village between about 10am and 8pm

Review 50:Parking out of town on the main road . About 5 mins. walk back .No big deal . The wind blew so hard during the night that the windows blew open a couple of times and we were sleeping in a force ten gale . Ended up jamming a suitcase against them . Old window furniture not working so well. Understandable . Very basic breakfast but it was included ..Chocolate donuts ? I don't think so ! Really the whole thing was remarkable value . We paid 49 euros out of season . Unbelievable!!

Review 51:I've never stayed in a Parador but it must be something like this. A 400 yr. old building groaning under the weight of antique furniture , huge hanging portraits, impressive light fittings and lovely pieces everywhere. In the heart of the old town . High ceilngs wide staircases ,massive beams , stained glass and cosy lounge areas for relaxing . Helpful staff .( a young woman carried my wife's heavy case up about 25 steps) .No lift in this building steeped in history . A wonderful buzzy bar restaurant on the Plaza Mayor ( right behind ) for dinner . The hotel has a restaurant in season .

Review 52:The staff are very nice and helpful. The hotel is beautiful with lovely old furniture and great sitting rooms to relax in. We were travelling on a motor bike which we were able to park in a safe place on the property. The hotel is situated right in town so easy access to restaurants and shops. A special place.

Review 53:The interior bathroom was not well ventilated. The venting that appeared to be present was completely ineffective. Breakfast was disappointing, and the room in which it was served was dreary.

Review 54:Lovely, very charming and so helpful receptionist (I should have asked her name, but she was tall with a pony tail and glasses). There is no lift but we were offered help with cases. Bed was good, pillows less so. The building was, it seems 16C, and the interior was very attractive.

Review 55:We loved our stay in the little town of Santillana. The people were wonderful, the hotel has a remarkable history, the breakfast was very good, and it was very good value. If you want to tour the caves, remember to book ahead and that they are closed on Mondays!

Review 56:Pity restaurant closes end of September. Would have been nice to eat there.

Review 57:Loved this hotel. It is a beautiful period place. Good continental breakfast with plenty of choice. Great atmosphere. Very helpful receptionist.

Review 58:WiFi was not accessible in our room.

Review 59:The location in the heart of old town Santanilla del Mar. The staff was exceptional when we ran into some car problems. The ambiance was wonderful. The walks around the village were serene and rural. we really enjoyed hiking there.

Review 60:There was nothing to dislike.

Review 61:Fabulous medieval building in a beautiful Medieval Town. Great choice of food nearby (the hotel restaurant was closed). Staff were extremely friendly and helpful.

Review 62:The wifi was terrible, as it was out about half of the 3-day stay at the hotel. The old floors prove quite noisy at any time of day or night (particularly middle of the night -- but this is expected in an historic building). The air conditioning in the room would quit working part way through the night and the room got quite stuffy. The included breakfast was ok, but not good coffee or o.j. (which we expect both to be excellent in Spain). It's just the nature of the town of Santillana del Mar, but parking is only available at a central parking lot some walk away from the hotel. This is something to be aware of if you tend to leave things in the car as you travel from place to place, as it's not quick to walk back down to retrieve something out of the car. You can drive to drop bags off at the hotel, then park at the lot (a reasonable $2/day), but this also has its own problems as you drive through the pedestrian-only center and avoid the throngs of tourists down the narrow streets.

Review 63:The building had loads of character and was incredibly furnished. There was a nice lounge area on the first floor, with sofas and tables, games and books. The staff was very friendly, helpful, and spoke excellent English. It's a convenient location for wandering the town. If you have never stayed in an old building with lots of history before, this is probably a good one to experience.

Review 64:Shower in bath very slippery - my wife slipped and had a fall. Luck not to sustain serious injury.

Review 65:Lovely old building with loads of history. Positioned right in the middle of town, Great garden restaurant/ bar with helpful staff.

Review 66:Obviously, the car has to be left at some distance away in a quiet car park , but one can load and unload outside the hotel. The age of the building inevitably means it lacks a degree of comfort in the bedroom and bathroom, but this is well worth it for the experience.

Review 67:The fact that this hotel was in one of the old mansions enabled us to experience the unique atmosphere of Santillana, and the furnishings and fittings all reflected this. The building itself is amazing. In spite of its position, all was quiet at night. The staff were very helpful and friendly.

Review 68:No elevator. But this normal for Santillana. The old buildings are not allowed elevators by the government.

Review 69:Everything! The staff was welcoming and helpful and spoke some English. The breakfast was wonderful and their restaurant served delicious Spanish cuisine at a reasonable prices for dinner. The hotel is tastefully decorated and our room was clean and charming. We felt like we were in a charming Spanish home. Everything is in walking distance. And parking the car was free at the nearby parking lot by the tourist office.

Review 70:May not be suitable for those who do not like stairs. However, I don't know if there are any rooms on the ground floor.

Review 71:I confess: I love hotels in historic buildings that haven't lost their soul in a modernisation. Centuries old floors and staircases are creaking, exactly the way they should,. But I heard none of that in my room as I slept very well. The hotel is perfectly placed in this lovely city, and with a great restaurant.

Review 72:The food was disgusting - microwaved and still partly frozen plus a disgusting stew with a long black hair in it.

Review 73:The lobby with its antique staircase and first floor seating area with old portraits.

Review 74:Small rug alongside bed looked distinctly grubby which let down the rest of our room which was clean

Review 75:Character of property due to antique furnishings and old building. Staff helpful, helped carry bags downstairs as there is no lift. Pleasant evening meal in courtyard garden.

Review 76:No wifi in the room; no ac so had to open window but lots of smokers outside brought smoke inside

Review 77:The hotel had tons of character; very unique to mirror the town; room was comfortable

Review 78:Highly recommended hotel . Perfect location , nice and clean rooms . The people are extremely nice and very helpfull with any questions .. The breakfast is very good .

Review 79:Wifi not working in rooms and room we were in had a slight smell if closed up all day .

Review 80:Location .meals onsite available ...windows opening ...large rooms and modern bathroom

Review 81:Internet only works at the common room. There is no lift nor air conditioning. Poor breakfast (no yogurt). Smelly toilet (no ventilation).

Review 82:Location, location, location. Besides it, the hotel is in a nice historic building.

Review 83:Everything!!

Review 84:Wonderful location, beautiful building with a great breakfast. Easy place to stay with kids in tow.

Review 85:Lovely old house with very modern bathroom - best of both worlds! Great location, reasonably priced.

Review 86:Everything

Review 87:Fantastic old grandeur

Review 88:Great atmosphere.helpful staff

Review 89:I think because the building is quite old the sound proofing is difficult.

Review 90:Its location and the oldy world decor.

Review 91:Limited menu in the restaurant. Poor quality wines included.

Review 92:Well preserved old building and features. Nice central location in the village.

Review 93:the front desk staff was very helpful. Breakfast had a good selection savory and sweet food.

Review 94:Poor breakfast Uncomfortable bed

Review 95:Position of hotel

Review 96:Low ceiling (under roof room)

Review 97:Position, historical building
