Reviews for Abbaye de Maizières
Review 1:71 stairs to climb Our bedroom on a mazzanine with dangerous stairs to come down to the bathroom No bottled water to drink No fridge
Review 2:We loved the Abbey building and the staff very nice
Review 3:Main problem is the price. For 400 euros you'd expect 4 star facilities; but this hotel was badly renovated ( you can hear pillow conversations of next room!), no water in Room of tea making facilities. Owners seem to think you can just pût 4 large TVs (One for each Space!) and a cheap Jacuzzi to make it 4 star.
Review 4:Location was great; some nice historical rooms.breakfast was ok,
Review 5:Sadly the heating in the bathroom AND bedroom were not working. We were offered to change rooms but felt it was too much of an upheaval. Bathroom was sorted and they gave us an electric heater for the room. The gentleman in charge could not have been more helpful.
Review 6:Hotel itself, its the most beautiful old abbey. Restaurant with with great ambiance and FAB food. Wonderful staff.
Review 7:We found the duvet too heavy for the time of year. Lighter duvet available on request would be a good idea.
Review 8:The conversion of this abbey is brilliant and very comfortable
Review 9:hard to find, difficulties to park in the street for the removal from car of luggage. Access to room very difficult, and the room themselves were not comfortable in a sens that there was no where to sit. Otherwise room was clean bathroom as well (no where to put personal items in the bathroom). We stayed one night and moved on to another hotel.
Review 10:I cannot say that there is anything in particular I liked about the hotel. Too many negatives, I was frankly surprised for the price to find that the accomodation was not comfortable.
Review 11:No lift which is quite normal btw. So you've better take only what you really need in you suitcase.
Review 12:Excellent staff. Thank you Betty for your assistance!! Amazing atmosphere of XII century surounding you. If only the walls could speak ?
Review 13:This is not an easy place to gain access to and in. steep stairs with no lifts, limit this facility. In our superior room, movement was restricted by low beams and a very narrow staircase inside room. Had an issue with account and staff would not listen, despite having evidence in front of them.
Review 14:Unique experience, clean and fine bathroom..
Review 15:A very special place! The staff are friendly and extremely helpful. Spoil yourself! The picture of the dining room in what was once a crypt sold me, and I was really happy with my stay. You are paying for luxury and that is what you'll get.
Review 16:Great ambiance. We paid for the suite so it was over 440 euros for the room. The room was wonderful but for a couple expensive. Dinner was great in the restaurant. Nice to walk the city at night and retire to the room. Had breakfast at a cafe around the corner rather than the expense at the hotel. Parking was easy around the. Corner or at the free lot one block away.
Review 17:The only downfall was the steep spiral staircase that we had to take to our room on the 4th floor. Staff did take care of hauling our luggage though.
Review 18:This is a beautiful historic hotel in the heart of Beaune, France. Walking distance from everywhere, with a beautiful dining area in a cave like setting. Rooms were clean and comfortable.
Review 19:Not for everybody: no elevator and spiral staircase can be difficult.
Review 20:Perfect location for Beaune. Beautifully renovated old abbey. Fantastic breakfast.
Review 21:Spiral staircase and no lift. Breakfast selection very limited. Had to keep asking for everything. Brought me a plate of tomatoes when I asked for salmon! Said it was marinated salmon but it was TOMATOES! Silly little glass teapots which the lids keep coming off and breaking. Dinner in the restaurant was dreadful. I never saw so many grumpy guests - it took 3 hours to get people (19, I counted!) served. Absolutely hopeless waiting staff, or perhaps it was the kitchen couldn't cope with 19 covers? My pigeon finally came as my main course and I needed a magnifying glass to see it! Vegetables amounted to TWO mange touts! The portions were tiny, bordering on downright mean! I would advise guests to go elsewhere in Beaune to eat. We were still hungry after our dinner.
Review 22:The location could not have been better. Easy to walk to everywhere in the city.
Review 23:Pricey breakfasts, and dinner menu didn't change.
Review 24:Elegant, fabulous location, historic building. Room was spacious, great shower. Parking was very close, safe, and free. Extremely friendly and gracious staff.
Review 25:Parking was an issue even though this had been pre- booked (wrong directions given on check in by reception staff although refund was given), stairs to top floor very difficult to negotiate with heavy luggage. Comfortable accommodation but expensive.
Review 26:Character of the accommodation was good
Review 27:The breakfast menu was confusing and we only figured out on our 2nd morning that you can ask for everything if you want e.g. croissant AND eggs AND bread. On both mornings we weren't offered the DELICIOUS freshly squeezed juice until we asked for it. Such a shame because it's a real bonus. For EUR 20 each, breakfast should be easier.
Review 28:Beautiful hotel in a great and very convenient location. The staff and owners are incredibly friendly and accommodating. Our room was really lovely but would have benefited from more comfortable seating and a larger bed. The Clarins products were great and we loved the cute shower, although there was really nowhere to put your wash bags in that bathroom.
Review 29:My room was on the top floor and a very difficult stair way Also I picked this hotel as it showed on its web site on site parking which is not the case
Review 30:The two bedrooms were accessed by separate, very steep staircases. Not safe for small children. The lounge area had air conditioning, but the two bedrooms were uncomfortably hot, didn't sleep well. Phoned reception for a fan, no fans! Just a small bottle of water was offered.
Review 31:Fantastic building, spiral staircase was interesting! Not for the older infirm for sure. The suite was well appointed with some cool led lights. Breakfast was very nice.
Review 32:This boutique hotel is charming, comfortable and in a great location compared to most others in Beaune. The rooms are lovely (a great reward for climbing all the stairs!). Definitely recommended for a unique hotel experience.
Review 33:The only word of warning to anyone less than fit is that the staircase to the rooms is narrow and steep . This was part of its charm nonetheless and the manager was insistent on carrying our bags so it was not a problem at all.
Review 34:The hotel could not have done more to make our stay wonderful . The dinner was superb and the staff charming and attentive without being overbearing. Fabulous.
Review 35:Nothing we didn't like. The staff were amazing. We hope to be back soon!
Review 36:Abbaye de Maizieres is an amazingly gorgeous historical property. The reception and dining area has the original vaulted wine cellar ceilings which are uplit so it looks like candlelight. Everything is gorgeous local stone, the tower staircase to the bed chambers, the rooms and bathrooms all very upscale.
Review 37:Beautiful hotel, excellent staff only too happy to help. Gave advice about what to see in Beaune. We had one of the suites and the view was amazing. Good breakfast the next morning.
Review 38:Needs a lift but believe it won't be long before they have one installed.
Review 39:Very comfortable & beautiful rooms with rooftop views, very friendly & helpful staff and an amazing 12th century vaulted stone dingroom - delicious meals presented beautifully - highly recommended. Great position too.
Review 40:Exhausting spiral staircase to get up. No wheelchairs or heavy suitcase (definitely).
Review 41:Staff, cleanliness, central location, authenticity of the building.
Review 42:No complaints, great hotel! Everyone talks about the stairs (we were on the 3rd floor) and they are a little bit of a challenge but we got a great workout! You do need to be in good shape to wak them repeatedly! The historic nature of the hotel overshadowed the steep staircase!
Review 43:Great location, clean, very friendly staff, English speaking, historic and beautiful property! The gave great dinner recommendations and were extremely helpful on all requests!
Review 44:The bad experience is that I booked the reservation with an american express but then i learned after my stay that the hotel does not accept american express. When booking.com contacted me they provided a link to pay with a different payment but the link did not offer an alternative solution.
Review 45:Room and atmosphere were great
Review 46:No fridge in the room. Inconvenient having no hand basin in the toilet.
Review 47:Beautiful room and hotel. Staff were very helpful and friendly. Lovely toiletries
Review 48:Hotel not easy to find. Our room was on the top floor (no lift) and on two levels with bathroom down steep steps. Not a problem for us but thought it should have been flagged. If a guest had a heart condition or fitness issues not sure how they would get to bed! While the restaurant was excellent for the price, and the staff very professional, we were served two very flat glasses of sparkling wine (at £12 Euro's each) which was not in line with the rest of the service!
Review 49:Amazing conversion of an abbey into a luxury hotel. Delightful staff; bags of atmosphere. A great example of a 'dining experience' at a reasonable price. Character rooms. Comfortable bed
Review 50:Beautiful hotel, great location, the entire staff were very welcoming and helpful during our entire stay. Would definitely stay at this property again.
Review 51:No bath. Little shelf space in shower room and what little surface there was became dangerously crowded (risk of knocking over glass cups onto tile floor)...
Review 52:The care to detail and customer attention was of great comfort.
Review 53:We trully enjoyed our two nights in this recently renovated cloister. The restaurant serves excellent food in the evening and for breakfast. Cosy atmosphere, great wines and excellent food... that's why you travel to Burgundy!
Review 54:I could hear the people in the room next door!
Review 55:We has to stop last minute due to major snow. The sraff were amazing and really went out of thier way to help. They even gave me extra bread for our long journeys ahead. Fabulous food as well. Best I've ever eaten in France.
Review 56:The spiral staircases are not for the "physically challenged"!
Review 57:The Abbey is perfect if you are a true lover of Burgundy. Bruno and Emmanuelle have created a fabulous place to stay, the rooms are gorgeous and the stonework and lighting are lovely. The true stars are the staff though and Betty is an absolute Angel. Nothing is too much trouble. If you want a base to explore the region this is it.
Review 58:Nothing at all.
Review 59:Our welcoming and friendly hosts, the wonderful location, staying in such an incredibly historic place. The breakfasts, luxurious toiletries.
Review 60:The staff were extremely helpful and gave lots of interesting information . The Abbye is an interesting building and the restaurant had truly magnificent tasting meals.
Review 61:Parking arrangements inconvenient and rooms up steep stairs. Also quite expensive.
Review 62:Location was excellent and atmosphere was good. Staff also friendly and helpful.
Review 63:Spacious room with high quality fittings Excellent restaurant Very friendly owners and staff who carried the bags up and down the spiral staircase and took us to the station
Review 64:The steep circular stairway seemed treacherous, especially with luggage. While an elevator would be desirable, the need to respect the realities of the ancient structure, would make installing one very difficult to accomplish.
Review 65:A memorable adventure staying the very aged abbey building. The owner and staff were helpful and welcoming. The breakfasts were rich and delicious. While a bit hard to find walking from the train station, it proved to be well worth the effort. Wonderfully located in the right midst of a delightful old walled town, it provided lots of charm.
Review 66:We are fit 70 year olds - and you have to be to negotiate the narrow spiral staircases and the mezzanine bedroom! Fortunately for us it added to the ambience.
Review 67:Ambience, especially the vaulted restaurant
Review 68:Charming small hotel on a quiet street just a couple blocks from the center of town. Dinner in the restaurant is not to be missed! Staff were wonderful. Be prepared to carry your luggage up a spiral staircase.
Review 69:Rooms are little small...but how much time do you really stay in your room? Breakfast could have had a little more variety.
Review 70:Super friendly staff. Very unique restaurant with great food. Super location. Nice rooms. Very accommodating staff.
Review 71:Room was tiny....no.6..why put a massive bed in a room when you then can't walk round it? Had to put chairs out in the hallway so we could actually get to the bed, which was very hard with scratchy sheets and lumpy pillows. Room looked out onto a wall 3 feet away and covered in air conditioning units which were so noisy we had to keep the window closed which made the room very stuffy. We could have been in any old building, nothing in our room gave the ambience that is suggested in the description. Wi Fi very weak, kept going off. We got up the next day and left straight away- really cannot recommend anything about this hotel other than the location!
Review 72:Location
Review 73:Must walk up narrow winding stone staircase to the room. Staff handled my luggage.
Review 74:As soon as you enter, you are taken back to middle ages when building was part of the church -used as an abbey. The stone arches and stone walls lit by candlelight on the dining tables was just lovely. Staff was very courteous and attentive and spoke good English so made my staff easy. Chef/food were excellent and matre de informative, and delightful. Room, though small, was modernly furnished, closet big enough, and bathroom very nice.
Review 75:Room on 2nd floor was up about forty steps on a steep spiral staircase. No problem for us, but be aware--and 3rd floor would be more. Beautiful old stained glass window in room was restricted to open only a couple inches so couldn't look out.
Review 76:Incredibly charming 12th century building, and staff could not have been more accommodating. We arrived at the train station and could not get a taxi. I called them for help and we had a ride in five minutes. We were renting a car that was some distance away and Bruno, the proprietor (a 12th generation Beaune resident) happily drove us over to pick it up. Staff spoke English and gave us great restaurant recommendations.
Review 77:The cost of breakfast at 16 euros per person was excessive. We gave it amiss and had a nice breakfast at a cafe around the corner for a third ofthe price!
Review 78:The hotel's location was excellent, just a few minutes walk from thecentre of Beaune, and the staff were delightfully friendly (with goodEnglish). This is a hotel with history and real character.
Review 79:long staircases & no lift. fine for us but ask for a lower floor if you are not fit. dinner was a bit too rich & fussy. stunning dining room but wish they'd had a broader menu or more simple food.
Review 80:decor and room amenities location
Review 81:Stairs only to the 3rd Floor but still worth a stay
Review 82:Friendliness , welcoming ,helpful and well positioned in the centre of Beaune. Would certainly return
Review 83:87 steps from reception to bed! People intending to stay should enquire where their room will be located - stairs within Duplex are particularly steep. Duplex rooms may not have as much usable space as their floor area may suggest.
Review 84:Location, cleanliness, helpful staff and owner, attention to detail with renovation and fittings.
Review 85:No parking at the hotel and also no space to pull in to unload bags- we arrived in torrential rain, couldn't find the entrance which is basically an arched window going down into the basement, pulled up alongside hotel only to find we were blocking a tourist train/bus trying to get by. All rooms are accessed via very long spiral staircase, and are tiny. En-suite facilities looked lovely- stone and tiles, but were impractical with nowhere to put toiletries etc. Overpriced.
Review 86:Staff were very helpful and friendly Breakfast was amazing and good value lovely fresh bread and pastries, hams and freshly squeezed orange juice.
Review 87:We loved staying at the Abbaye. What a wonderfully unique and historical place, in the center of town so easy to get anywhere. Our room was very big and comfortable. We would stay here again.
Review 88:Nothing.
Review 89:Unique, quirky and full of history. This hotel is fantastic. The staff we dealt with Julia and Bruno were superb. A credit to the hotel industry, this hotel will not disappoint. If you are over 6ft tall you might find the main entrance a bit of a strain. You'll see what I mean when you get there. Beds are ultra comfortable. The room we stayed in wasn't big, but they have plenty of bigger options. This hotel has been created from a 12th century abbey and is simply brilliant. A tall spiral (castle like) staircase may hinder a few people getting their cases up, but help is at hand. A big thank you to Bruno the owner for speaking perfect English, put my French into third division. Free parking about 200 yards away in Republique car park. As a plus Beaune is something of a hidden jewel. A fabulous place with great restaurants and drinking venues. We didn't try their restaurant but the menu seemed fab! 10/10!!!
Review 90:A bit expensive
Review 91:Great friendly extremely helpful staff. Unique building with charme and charactére nicely renovated. The restaurant is of gourmet quality
Review 92:Rooms were quite spacious and comfortable in this 12th century Abbey turned hotel. Bathrooms were modern and spacious. Staff was very hospitable and helpful, spoke very good english, and the proprietor was on site daily. Walking distance to almost everything in the quaint town of Beaune (wonderful antique shops). Breakfast included meats, cheeses, egg dishes cooked to order, and freshly squeezed juice. Would highly recommend and would gladly stay there again.
Review 93:Beautiful decor and lighting in room
Review 94:Fantastic room, service and food
Review 95:Nothing really, A lot of stairs, but we knew that before we got there, so it was fine
Review 96:beautiful and historic looking hotel, and very nice staff
Review 97:Amazing room and dining area. Fantastic
Review 98:Great atmosphere
Review 99:The staff were exceptionally helpful.nothing was too much trouble.location perfect, quiet side street but 40 yards from old town.
Review 100:50 twisting stairs to climb to room, some with no handrail. Not for the infirm !! No bar on Sunday's
Review 101:Excellent Services
Review 102:Wonderful building and staff (no elevator so not good for travelers thzt dont like steep stairs)
Review 103:no elevator, one needs to be fit for the top floor rooms
Review 104:charming old building, good breakfast
Review 105:Take a dinner or breakfast at the special resturant with candles.
Review 106:I loved everything about this hotel. It was an interesting, historical and yet modern. The beds were ultra comfortable.
Review 107:slightly overpriced
Review 108:Location , staff, food and wines
Review 109:Very steep staircase, no tea-making facilities.
Review 110:Location. Large room. Excellent bathroom. Beautiful vaulted reception.
Review 111:Clean, bright, spacious and yet very much in harmony with its historic character. Wonderful restaurant and perfect location!
Review 112:A very unusual destination and eating a wonderful meal in a crypt!
Review 113:No car park
Review 114:The restaurant is very good.
Review 115:See above
Review 116:Everything except the air con didn't reach the upper floor of our galleries bedroom.
Review 117:Staff were amazing - food superb
Review 118:The stairs are a mission for the unfit
Review 119:The best place to stay in Beaune. Central to everything, extremely helpful staff, and modern facilities but with unique historical setting.
Review 120:Room needs a mini-bar refridgerator with some refreshing drinks
Review 121:Wonderfully helpful people, great location, excellent wi-fi, good food & wine.
Review 122:Breakfast very poor. Car parking difficult
Review 123:Bed comfortable
