Reviews for Hôtel Les Gens De Mer - Dunkerque
Review 1:The staff are very friendly and helpful. It is quiet and little external noise. Food is good. Beds are comfortable. Ideally situated for walking into town.
Review 2:Dated rooms, a limited menu.
Review 3:Location very close to were I needed to be. Helpful staff, although the bedrooms and en-suite bathroom is dated the cleanliness is extremely good.
Review 4:The WiFi was not working. This was a bit of a shame but not earth shattering.
Review 5:It was good value, the hotel was clean and the beds comfortable, with plenty of storage space in the bedroom. The breakfast included all French variations as well as bacon and egg. Being on motorcycles the free and ample parking was very useful.
Review 6:It did exactly what it said on the tin. Perhaps decor a little tired but it was what I expected for the money.
Review 7:Great value nice location friendly staff great bed great
Review 8:Bought a drink in the evening, reception staff left and the person left refused to let us have the lights on in the bar, it was 10pm
Review 9:Rooms were comfortable and clean. Reception staff helpful
Review 10:The 'superior' room had nothing: towels were thin and small, no hairdryer, no air conditioner, no mini fridge, no kettle. Poor positioning of furniture - so cramped space between bedside and wardrobe. Breakfast the food was fine but quality of cutlery and china was poor - old and in poor condition. Some issues of cleanliness.
Review 11:The bar did not seem to be available and the hotel was a little noisy ... but of course that is the other guests, not the staff!
Review 12:The location of the hotel and the friendliness of the staff The quality of the breakfasr was very good with a good choice of food

Review 16:Comfortable ,restaurant was very good.
Review 17:Everything, it looks like it was derelict and could not see out of windows. Thought it was closed down for years when we turned up and inside was very basic and had a fusty smell.
Review 18:Nothing
Review 19:Was not told I had to leave room key at reception during the day. I was told off for not doing so during my stay. So the next day I called at reception for the key to get back to my room and was not asked for id No tea making in room
Review 20:Food very good. Waitress and waiters very good
Review 21:Very difficult to find- signage at night was non existent- Not much to see or do in Dunkurkque even though it has so much historical significance
Review 22:Price range was good- hotel was clean but spartan- good value
Review 23:Money would probably go further in other towns Room was quite small Decor was dated, although I enjoyed the novel maritime theme
Review 24:Conveniently located for access to nearby restaurants, museums etc Well-equipped ensuite Staff were friendly enough
Review 25:Breakfast was a bit poor, not much choice. Toilet was very dirty in our room.
Review 26:The beds were very comfortable, ample parking, very nice view. Internet access great,.
Review 27:General cleanliness of room and bathroom and no mattress protector. Tables in breakfast room not clean and generally breakfast looked unappetising.
Review 28:Good view of harbour from bedroom, parking on site (not secure),
Review 29:breakfast room and reception need urgent refurbishment
Review 30:the proximity to the city, the view of the harbour, the cleanliness of the room, the friendly staff, the ample parking
Review 31:We felt the restaurant left a lot to be desired. Zero ambience; indifferent service and average food. I found a piece of plastic embedded in my starter but just got a shrug when I pointed it out!
Review 32:Location was good and very convenient for the ferry. Hotel is modern, clean and comfortable.
Review 33:Great for ferry...nice hotel and staff
Review 34:Very comfortable bed, room and bathroom very clean
Review 35:Towels the size of handkerchieves and not enough. Pillows as thick as handkerchieves and three between two people.
Review 36:Good breakfast.
Review 37:Rooms in need of refurbishing, bath chipped
Review 38:Saff and food good
Review 39:Very comfortable and clean room. Very convenient for the ferry. Good parking. Thankyou-v
Review 40:Reception helpfulness and 'politesse'

Review 46:Bitten all over by mosquitoes. Pity they cannot put a fly killer in the room.

Review 56:everything is just fine
Review 57:felt the rooms have too much furniture as such reduces the available space
Review 58:ideal location, surprised variety on offer at breakfast
Review 59:The mariner style of the furnitures was really nice, we felt like if we were on a boat !
Review 60:Wifi reception very poor in room, good in public areas.
Review 61:Very close to good restaurant and city center, comfortable bed. Free parking.
Review 62:Very comfortable clean and good location
Review 63:Only one lift and no stairs Some stuff with limited english
Review 64:Good location Friendly stuff
Review 65:very nice position at the sea lot of free parking around
Review 66:The fact we could come in the middle of the night and still get theroom.pricevise was excellent as well for the comfourt of the place.il
Review 67:The breakfast especially the bad coffee and poor choice.
Review 68:Location.
Review 69:Lift was out of order, no wifi and general state of the hotel was poor - at best; damp, peeling paint throughout, dirty stairwells and tired/tatty. Staff tried their best however but will not be revisiting
Review 70:Good night's sleep before going to the ferry to Dover. Checked in quite late around 10 pm - no problem at all, friendly staff. Parking directly in front of the hotel. Free WIFI.
Review 71:The internet was not working which is always a pet peeve of mine. Other than that I enjoyed my stay there.
Review 72:The hotel staff were very friendly and knowledgeable. Also, the restaurant was quite good. Location made it an easy walk to downtown, the beach and for general sightseeing.
Review 73:The weather!!! This is the second Foire visit we have made with tempest style weather!!!!!
Review 74:The purpose of our trip was to visit la Foire du Vin et de la Biere - an excellent weekend -a chance to taste and try food and wine and to practise my french. An opportunity to try wines that are beyond one's normal price range and others not usually seen outside France. I would suggest though that people should have a basic grasp of the language as some producers do not speak English.
Review 75:The room accommodation at the hotel was very cramped and would have been unacceptable were we staying more than two nights. We found the staff helpful when approached for specific assistance but not as cheerful or welcoming as holiday-makers might expect.
Review 76:My son and I came principally to visit the Dunkirk beaches where my father was part of the wartime evacuation. That done, we were pleasantly impressed with the re-built town of Dunkirk and its environs.
Review 77:having to pay upon arrival because they don't trust people anymore - maybe photocopy of the visa card would be a good idea like they do in some more 'upmarket' hotels
Review 78:restaurant - excellent quality price ratio room was comfortabel
Review 79:For a basic, low cost hotel, Les Gens De Mer is very comfortable, the staff friendly and the food all one expects in France. I have known this place since it was opened as a seafarers' hostel in the 1970's I am glad it is now available to the wider public.
Review 80:Great discrepancies between photos and reality. - Beddings so hard that they could cut through your skin - bathroom dated and toilets looks as if it has not had a wipe- withe toilets turned yellow... All of the above make the hotel overpriced. It shouldn't have any star at all; or in fact should have - star. If you are after somewhere clean, don't go there. Places can be dated and clean. Unfortunately this is not one of them.
Review 81:Good location as it is in the city and nothing else.
Review 82:Our only disappointment was that there was no kettle nor hair drier in the room.
Review 83:Dunkerque is a splendid destination. A Port which has become a leisure venue. It is also a seaside town. The Hotel Les Gens De Mer is a comfortable hotel with good food, helpful staff and is close to all amenities. The name of the Hotel translates as The People of the Sea or Seafarers. It overlooks the Yacht Basins. The Museum of the Dunkerque Evacuation is a must to visit. We would be very happy to make a return visit.
Review 84:Location was excellent, staff were really friendly and very helpfull. Made us feel very welcome.Really enjoyed our 2 night stay and would highly recommend this hotel to our friends and family.
Review 85:No tea making facilities in the room. Although bottle water supplied.
Review 86:Nice and quiet, good view of the harbour. Close to the city and handy for local destinations. Excellent restaurant.
Review 87:We couldn't really fault the hotel or the staff we met.
Review 88:We enjoyed our stay very much as the hotel was clean and smart looking. The staff were friendly and very helpful. We were surprised it was only a 2*! It was comfortable, both in the rooms and the Bar/Restaurant areas. The meal we had was also very enjoyable! We accidentally left our overcoats in the wardrobe and when we phoned the hotel the staff were aware and offered to post them to us and even though we offered to pay the postage (as it was our mistake) they said it would be free of charge. We, as a family, (we were with our Daughter and Son in Law) would definitely stay again and plan to do so sometime next year.
Review 89:Breakfast is poor. About €8.50 Euros for poor coffee, serious lack of baguettes & some pretty poor pastries, is taking the mickey. Simply Avoid the breakfast & stroll into town & grab something from a boulangerie or pattisere or coffee at a local restaurant.
Review 90:Location was excellent, very close to the Marina (3 minute walk) & very close to the town centre (5 to 6 minutes walk) & very close to a number of good Frech Restaurants again within a few minutes walk. + Nice views of the harbour & the sea from our hotel room. Room was very clean, & functional & was a good price for a 2* Hotel. Cheap & Cheerful normally means a bit "grotty", but the Les Gen De Mer @ Dunkerque was very good "bang for the buck". Clean & simple & great location for town & restaurants whilst still being on the Marina.
Review 91:It is fine.
Review 92:Hotel nice and clean. Friendly and helpful staff. Nice location in thetown and on the riverside. Quiet..ample free parking. Very goodrestuarant with reasonably priced food. This was our second visit.thefirst visit was 2 years ago and we were horrified when we arrived ashotel looked derelict-building work was in progress but we decided tostay and the hotel was fine inside. Now however, the building work hasfinished with more bedrooms, new lift and a new dining room. Nocomplaints at all for the price.
Review 93:Could not find anything bad about the whole place/area.
Review 94:EVERYTHING. Staff very friendly and ever so helpfull. Food was excelent. Location was lovely. Room was of a high standard and very comfortable. View was outstanding.
Review 95:Smelly beds and pillows, all 4 pillows and 2 beds out of 4 in the rooms. The smell was so bad that we resorted to sleeping on top of the duvet!Poorly dried or not washed pillows were the likely reason. We booked connecting rooms, but the wall between the rooms had 2 massive doors that were auto-closing and openable only from one room each. This is completely unsuitable for a family with children. We blocked the doors open with a chair, but this used almost all corridor space. The rooms are quite small, no airco, windows can only be fully open or fully closed. 3rd floor rooms get very hot. The hotel building has poor ventilation. LCD TV is tiny and has only French speaking channels plus CNN. Staff evidently know full well about shortcomings of the hotel, because they demand upfront payment prior to handing out the keys. We stayed in better hostels than this "hotel".
Review 96:Location is ok, free parking, good bathroom, ok breakfast.
Review 97:Lift / elevator was on a go slow & we couldn't find the staircase !
Review 98:The location was perfect after travelling the full length of England & after the ferry crossing. Free parking & excellent value for money breakfast. Rooms were clean and comfortable. Would recommend for any short stay.
Review 99:A very pleasant hotel close to the old harbour so nice to look at theview. We had a good night's sleep. I would have thought it rated higherthan 2 star although the bathroom, which was perfectly adequate, lookeda little tired. Lots of parking outside the hotel.
Review 100:Opening hours of the bar and restaurant were very restricted. Daytime receptionist on arrival was not very friendly and knew very little about where to go to get a meal locally when their restaurant was closed. Would have been good to have had tea/coffee making facilities in rooms. No hair dryer.
Review 101:Parking was easy. Wi-Fi was good. Evening receptionists were very friendly.
Review 102:The bar facilities, for hot or cold drinks, did not exist after 9pm. Tea/coffee in the room woulod have been nice. Will take our own travel kettle etc next time!!!
Review 103:For a 2 star hotel the food at the evening meal was excellent with good service, the breakfast was what we expected, fair selection of good food, again for a 2 star hotel. the location for us was good with views over the marina. Our room was very clean and tidy the cleaning daily was good including the replenishment of bathroom items, overall not bad at all. We would both use this hotel again.
Review 104:The bar was not open Saturday night when we came back from town and wanted a drink.
Review 105:Close to town
Review 106:central location and veiw outof the window
Review 107:the breakfast was limited for choice and expensive
Review 108:the room was clean and tidy staff friendly
Review 109:Located close to city centre
Review 110:Tatty, run down, tired, in need of a complete makeover.
Review 111:Not a lot
Review 112:Noise from lorries going over the nearby bridge
Review 113:Easy parking
Review 114:Nothing.
Review 115:Value for money, bright airy room, good buffet breakfast and friendly helpful staff.
Review 116:No coffee in room or late at night from reception
Review 117:Very clean and very helpful
Review 118:Room small but perfectly adequate
Review 119:Friendly staff.
Review 120:Everything was very fine, no complaints but for the small towels. Staff were extremely friendly and helpful
