Reviews for La Mère Poulard
Review 1:After the shuttle drops you off you have to walk a distance. When we arrived at the hotel there was no elevator and lots of stairs to our room and we had brought unnecessary baggage not knowing this. So fun to stay in the town!
Review 2:Staying right inside the gate of the Monastery was a once in a lifetime experience! Hotel was exactly what you would expect. View was beautiful!
Review 3:Our experience was completely ruined by the total absence of information about car parking and shuttle bus. We had to phone about car parking location and entry code which then didn't work. We advised that we had to leave early at 8am. Even at this time, we had to leave without breakfast. The first bus stopped 400m away on the bridge which we ran to with luggage and children in the dark and rain only to have the arrogant bus driver leave as we approached. The second arrogant driver drove past refusing to stop. After another sprint back to where we started - we were refused onto the bus and told to go back to where the first bus stopped which then again drove off. Finding a parking pay machine that worked and accepted cash was also time consuming. A few more signs, information with the booking, and drivers etc who were more helpful would fix the issues.
Review 4:We arrived at 15:30 room was ready,a very charming receptionist greeted us,stayed in room 35 had a view towards the front gates and ocean. Very comfortable bed, nice hot shower, room was great, lots of interesting pictures of well known people on the wall as you climbe the stairs.
Review 5:Where it was at Le mont st Michelle Hotel was over looking main carpark and so very very noisy and you cannot sleep after 3am till checkout At 3am starts with deliveries wheeling trolley over cobble stones with no regard to People sleeping Then starts the forklifts with skip bins and then more deliveries with forklifts This needs to been done between 3am and 9am before the hored of tourists arrive Even double glazing Windows did not help Their are other hotels 100 yards up the road which face the water and not the carpark which would be quieter The staff were pleasant but the hotel and its 60s avocado colored bathrooms were in very much need of a renovation I will return to Le mont st Michelle but not this hotel Also their is no coffee in the room just tea and a fully stocked minibar with a gin and tonic costing 15 euro
Review 6:That if was at Le mont st Michelle
Review 7:The WIFI was spotty... BUT..... I had to work Mon-Fri, and had to have phone and wifi, and Le Mere Pollard helped me out with a close by sister hotel for a part of the time when the wifi was not responsive. Again, Tifanie, Thomas, and staff at Les Terrasses Poulard came thru!! Thank you!!
Review 8:Tifanie, Thomas, and my favorite staff for lunch and dinner at the hotel restaurant are the BEST anyone can ask for! Food is really good, service is great, clean, and located perfectly within the village. Next time there, i would TOTALLY stay in the village again, and most likely here at La Mere Pollard!
Review 9:We didn't realize that you have to park in a car lot about 3KM away and take your luggage onto a shuttle bus that takes you across the causeway towards Mont Ste-Michele. From there you have to walk the last 500meters to the entrance. Then the hotel does not have an elevator, and the rooms are all on the 3rd,4th or 5th floor. The stairs are narrow and twisty and not recommended for seniors with ANY luggage. The WiFi service was very poor.
Review 10:The location was terrific, right inside the entrance to Mont Ste-Michel. The restaurant was very good, specializing in Omlettes
Review 11:The parking situation was a horrible experience. We had no code to get into parking and when we squeezed in on someone else's code, we had no ticket to get out. The hotel did not give the necessary information and it made for a very stressful beginning and ending.
Review 12:The beauty of the setting.
Review 13:No lifts, so make sure you pack light ! (Also there is only one cafe in the area that serves breakfast if you didn't want to have bfast with the hotel.)
Review 14:Location was superb. Right in the heart of the Mont st Michel. Wake up early morning and beat the queue for the shuttle bus!
Review 15:The fact that we had to climb over 80 steps to reach our room did not come as a surprise, but it was a struggle as we are on the "wrong" side of 60.
Review 16:The experience of staying overnight right on the island of Le Mont Saint Michel was very special and will be long remembered.
Review 17:No wifi coverage to speak of. It would have been nice for staff to advise us about the tides on arrival and also to advise that their famous omelettes are only available at lunch or dinner - not breakfast.
Review 18:Amazing spot - historical
Review 19:Since the island is very small, the room was also small.... I guess all accommodations in this island would be the same.
Review 20:If you get a value deal, the price could be quite reasonable for being in Mont Saint Michel overnight.
Review 21:From our room we could see the sun rise over the sea and the changing tides. Watching the arrival of visitors crossing the new bridge seemed to mirror the arrival of pilgrims all those years ago. A fabulous experience.
Review 22:Because of the location, the room is very overpriced. It was comfortable, but there is no lift so don't take a large suitcase. I would recommend staying on the mainland and going over to the island by the bus.
Review 23:There are no elevators and many stairs. Not an issue for us but something to consider.
Review 24:Awesome location! We were able to get a last minute promo rate as well.
Review 25:The staff could not care less if the guest is happy or not. With theirattitude they are basically saying you can go elsewhere if youdon't like it. If you don't have a car this is not possible soyou are stuck. It is the biggest rip off. Do yourself a favor and visitfor the day. Don't give them any of your money. That's all theywant. Get their early walk around and then leave. No internet in theroom. The bathroom sink would not drain. Staff at reception did nothingto address it.
Review 26:The only thing to like was the location
Review 27:Parking was very confusing. Young woman who greeted us at front desk was bored and detached.
Review 28:Location on le Mont St Michel is like no other in the world. Dinner in the restaurant was fantastic and especially for its isolated location. Service excellent and environment and food delicious.
Review 29:La Mere Poulard is a tourist trap. I have stayed at 8 hotels on this trip, many of which charged between half and twp thirds the price that this one does. They had far better service, better amenities, and a nicer breakfast. Arriving here was bewildering. Our GPS took us to a parking lot from which there was a shuttle to Mont-St-Michel. I was not prepared for this. There were no signs to tell us where we were going and taking the bus meant we had to leave many of our belongings in the car overnight. Not very reassuring! There was no one at the reception desk to greet us; they were having a smoke and were gone about ten minutes. (Keep in mind that guests who check out of their rooms are invited to leave their bags at this same unguarded reception desk!) The walk to our room with one heavy rolling carry-on was meandering and involved innumerable stairs. There is no elevator. The waitress in the restaurant ignored us, so after 15 minutes without a greeting or water we left. We never were able to connect to the internet even though I was told how easy it was to do so twice. The polyfill duvet was too hot for the season. I had the sense that La Mere Poulard is just a business, not a house of hospitality, which is what it should be.
Review 30:The room was dark and quiet. I awoke to the sound of bells ringing in the morning, which was lovely. The site was readily accessible via the hotel, but the tours can easily be accomplished in half a day, so this is unnecessary.
Review 31:Nothing
Review 32:Fantastic location in the heart of the castle. During the night, when all the tourists leave the island, you can walk alone on the empty afterdark streets of the medieval castletown. Famous (but a bit pricy) restaurant on the ground floor.
Review 33:Internet reptile was patchy and bed uncomfortable as too hard but it was worth it for the views
Review 34:Great location, room and views. We were in room 44 (fourth floor and no lift)
Review 35:Poor wifi loading. 2 peoples only provide one bottle of water. Curtains are not wide enough to cover the windows. Visitors can see into the room via the windows.
Review 36:There was a cleanliness oops. I won't go into detail as I am sure it is not typical, other than to say it was dealt with quickly and with some urgency.
Review 37:My best ever booking.com purchase. If you are in the area and can see the right discounted price (which they tell us is both lucky and rare) - just go on a whim as we did. Worth checking each day just in case. Right on Mont Saint Michel island. At the gate so easy to find and does not spoil a visit by 'previewing' it when loaded with cases and not so able to enjoy. Also the Mont is self evidently steep and you would not want to carry things further. Overall the best located hotel of all for this sight. Good English on reception. Super comfortable bed. Outstanding historic hotel in a historic area. Stairs unsuitable for less able visitors (however that also applies generally to the historic location unfortunately). See the abbey at night for the audio visual show (2015). I recommend it over the day tour of the history - especially if you are already "all chateaux'd out".
Review 38:The place is old and worn. No elevator. Very pricey for what you get.
Review 39:If you want to stay IN Mt St Michel, this is good. But I would rather stay OUTSIDE, to get the view of the place.
Review 40:Don't let the following influence your decision to stay at this hotel, overall it was excellent, but: We struggled a bit with the luggage up 3 flights of stairs, but it is to be expected with such an ancient building. We would definately not recommend the restaurant of the Hotel, it is grossly overpriced and the service leaves a lot tp be desired.
Review 41:Excellent! The hotel is right at the entrance of the town - no need to carry your luggage up the hill further into town.
Review 42:Did not love theSuper high prices just because you could. We bought things elsewhere just on principle. We went to a shop next door and the price of cider was less than half. We drank champagne from your fridge th cost $45 outrageous.
Review 43:Loved the location the staff was friendly except the owner he seemed mean to his employees
Review 44:expensive breakfast $25, we just passed
Review 45:being a whole 24h inside Mont Saint Michel and going everywhere at any time of day or night to visit, walk, enjoy a medieval atmosphere
Review 46:We could have had a better experience if they had sent a map and instructions for parking. We were completely lost and had to phone the hotel for a code to get us into the car park. This should have been done before we arrived.
Review 47:Lots of stairs! WiFi was not working at all.
Review 48:Character property, wonderful (spendy) restaurant, very convenient at the entrance to the town, nice view up to the abbey.
Review 49:Service non good. There is not a man to bring luggage upstairs. I ate at the restaurant mere polard and quality/price is very low.
Review 50:The position is very good.
Review 51:When we arrived, the kitchen was closing. We had no idea that their restaurant would close at that time. It would be great if that was posted on their website in an easy place to access. A lot closes early there. The server we came upon first didn't seem interested in helping us find food anywhere. It took me beging her for bottles of water I could purchase for a manager to notice our predicament. We were grateful he kept the kitchen open for our order, sadly, he recommended, actually, insisted, we get two omelettes, one of the most expensive things on their menu. They were awful, not recommended. My wife didn't even eat 1/10 of hers. I ate mine out of sheer necessity.
Review 52:Staying out at night in one of the many gardens above the hotel at the base of the castle. You'll have a view of the castle at night, it's really romantic. Stay until the lights go out, and if you're lucky, you'll see every single star and a few meteors.
Review 53:Food was extremely expensive and average at best. Omlettes disappointing and not worth the novelty. Many flies in the restaurant.
Review 54:Fabulous view from windows. Location was excellent and great value. Staff was wonderful.
Review 55:Front desk staff didn't tell us that parking was not possible on Mont St. Michel and gave no guidance about where to park. Nor was a hotel code given, which would have saved us a few euros. Long walk up three floors and across to an annex, up another two floors, carrying bags. Overly expensive restaurant for just so-so food.
Review 56:Location was perfect. Comfortable beds, spacious bathroom.
Review 57:No one to help carry bags up so many steps. I am 75 and have a heart condition so without the help of my niece, it would have been impossible for me to get to my room.
Review 58:Loved the historic feel of everything. Loved the quietness in the evening and absolutely adored the view.
Review 59:It says parking is available, which means parking on the main land (at 12.50 Euros/day) and taking a shuttle closer to the Mont then walking to the hotel followed by climbing the stairs with your luggage. All of this was fine for us, we're in good shape, but I can easily see how this would be a burden for some. We left the 'Do Not Disturb' sign on our door when we went out, because our room contained valuables and we would be back in an hour or so. When we returned the sign was removed, the door was unlocked, and they had made the room anyway. I informed the manager who seemed somewhat concerned that we were frustrated but still didn't understand why it would be an issue. Find yourself a cheaper place to stay and do take the free shuttle to experience the truly incredible place that is Mont Saint Michel.
Review 60:Guess...the location. Although, this is overstated in some ways. Staying on the actual Mont was nice but it really wasn't worth the enormous cost, in our opinion.
Review 61:It is a minor thing: We left the windows open and when we came back to the room it had about a dozen of flies that were siting on the ceiling. Mesh on the windows or at least a notice to the guests would be helpful. Did not try breakfast since it seemed to be totally overpriced (Euro 25/person).
Review 62:Location, location, location. Staff, comfort of the bed and the room.
Review 63:I know nothing can be done physically, but that's a lot of stairs to the 3rd floor for 68 year-old legs with luggage.
Review 64:The location on the island itself is excellent and was a highlight of our stay.
Review 65:Wi-fi did not work No elevator Average bath I suggest staying in one of the hotels outside the walls. Is much cheaper, you can bring your suitcases and park your car in the hotel. Free shutlles bring you in and out of the walls until late at night, and run very often.
Review 66:History of the place
Review 67:The restaurant wait staff was borderline unpleasant. The front desk staff was very nice.
Review 68:I loved the location of this facility. My room was spacious, nice and clean, although not luxurious by american standards.
Review 69:The price of the breakfast seemed too pricy so we did not partake.
Review 70:The staff was wonderful. The room was perfect and clean. Nothing beats staying right in St- Michel!
Review 71:Seedy, small, uncomfortable room, overpriced and not very good food. Better to stay outside and take the navette, or, better yet, make a day trip of it.
Review 72:If you're going to stay overnight and want to be on-island, this is OK. You can consider yourself part of history. I first stayed there 45 years ago, when it was an adventure. Now M-S-M is Disneyland, and La Mere Poulard is its chief proprietor.
Review 73:it just needs a little sprucing up. New painting, floor coverings, otherwise it's all in keeping with the historical feel of the whole island.
Review 74:Fabulous Fabulous. History, character, location. It had it all. Decor a little in need of refreshing but the location of this property made up for slightly shabby floor coverings.
Review 75:No any information about system of parkig. When we called hotel, did't receive clear answer. On arriving, girl on reception - practically - no any English.
Review 76:Abbey !!!
Review 77:If you must try their famous omelette you may be disappointed at the value for money - i.e. it tastes great (heart attack quantity of cream!) but costs a bomb!
Review 78:Location, staff, room all good. Try for an outward facing room
Review 79:there's no lift - but then it's in a "medieval town". ;)
Review 80:I wasn't sure what to expect but when I got there I liked the hotel for its history. The room facilities are modern for the convenience of tourists. It's very clean. The staff are helpful.
Review 81:We had to phone booking.com to find how to get to the hotel from the car park 4 miles away, then take a public shuttle bus which stops 1/2 mile from town gate then you walk with your luggage,no help given and same on return and we are in our 70s. Hotel rooms are on 3 floor and no lift. Restaurant a total rip off, over e200 for cold food, cold plates and thin watery Burgundy,Chorley le Beane and no senior staff on duty to complain to, only 2young waitresses who didn't know what to do. A totally awful disappointing stay that should have been very special.
Review 82:Nothing other than the town
Review 83:NO lift (4th floor); people from service doing A LOT of noise cleaning outside at 07:30 on Saturday morning; prix/quality not ecxellent.
Review 84:Very good position, vue on the bay, room small but perfect, breakfast super, restaurant very good. Personel OK
Review 85:I really enjoyed my stay. The staff from the hotel was very nice. The location is fabulous and the restaurant of the hotel, though expensive, is excellent. I got a room with view to the Bay that made the stay even more special. Rooms are nice and comfortable, enough space for 1-2 days stay. Be aware that it has steep stairs and no elevator, but one shouldn't forget that the whole place is just a rock in the middle of the water and that those buildings are ancient. I don't think it would be fair to expect Hyatt comfort in Mount St Michel. And in fact I think that's what it makes the place and the stay so special.
Review 86:No staff on duty to check out. No other staff could help us but to say the receptionist slept in and would there soon. Finally we left without checking out so as not to miss our bus back to train station.
Review 87:The comfort of te bed and room
Review 88:Stairs, price for a small room.
Review 89:One of the first places one comes to on the rock, but our room involved inside and outside stairs. Pleasant and quiet enough, but they do take advantage of their on-island location to overcharge for food and lodging.
Review 90:Nothing much. restaurant rather pricey but up market relative to the rest.
Review 91:1st hotel upon entry means you can check-in and put your things in the room before venturing out to explore the castle. Worth staying in the island as the atmosphere is completely different and can be spectacular from daytime. The in house restauraant is apparently where Ms Mere Poulard first invented the fluffy omelette. Can watch the master chef cooks this at the entrance.
Review 92:It is a castle, so do not expect a lift to your bedrooms. Travel light!
Review 93:You have to stay at least one night in MSM. We understand that two nights is ok, three or more would be too much. Great location, terrific food, worth a try.
Review 94:a lot of stairs! :) wifi wasn't working (maybe it was our mistake...) not at all value for money! expencive breakfast..
Review 95:The staff was really helpfull and friendly! In that area is the best hotel ! Do not forget to ask for bederoom with sea view... Doesn't worth to stay outside from Le Mont Saint Michel. As there is not many hotels this one is the best choise! The potition is more than excelent! The building make you feel that you are leaving in another century!
Review 96:Our room was not ready till 5pm due to plumbing problems - no hot water. It was a little hard to get to the 3rd floor rooms lugging luggage up the narrow stairwell. You had to go up the stairs, go outside to a different annex, then walk up 2 more flights to get to our room. The back alley was not well lit, it was hard to see the stairs in the dark.
Review 97:We were lucky to get nice rooms which were very clean with comfortable beds, at a steep discount on New Year's Eve. The staff was very friendly, nice pictures displayed on the wall, and LOVED the tub!
Review 98:No hot water for a shower at the end of the day. Was told a tour group had used all the hot water! Tried again the next morning but no luck either.
Review 99:Staying on Mt St Michel was a wonderful experience. The hotel had great charm, our room had a view of the sea and was spacious with a separate side room for our adult son to sleep in a real bed, not a sofa bed or roll - away. The hotel's restaurant was amazing, well worth the price.
Review 100:While it was fun to watch them whip up and cook the omelet, the omelet was a bit runny for my tastes, and the flavor was so-so.
Review 101:Wonderful view from our window. It was very special to stay right at Mont St. Michel.
Review 102:It was poor value, we paid extra for a view which was only a glimpse out of a side window. It was designed to really exploit tourists.
Review 103:It was great being on the island.
Review 104:Very expensive shops and restaurants in town. No wine as a whole! Just cider and calvados(((.
Review 105:Very good location, but you for sure should stay on island at night! otherwise you can't feel everything magic atmosphere of this incredible place). Only night and morning are worth to be there). Famous omelet in restaurant was very tasty (especially process of cooking)! But wine is too expensive.
Review 106:I would never recommend staying on the "island". It's a huge tourist trap! 5 euro cokes, outrageous price for meal at Le Mere Poulard with average food at best. WiFi not working, steep stairs, tired rooms.
Review 107:Not much to say on the positive, the room was clean.
Review 108:Very physical trip. Unable to park at hotel. Remote Shuttle drops you 3 long city blocks from Hotel....you haul luggage. Should have known there would be lots of Steep climbing...no elevators, no AC, room like a sauna until night fell. This trip requires a level of fitness to enjoy.
Review 109:Location on the island was convenient Beautiful spot
Review 110:No air conditioning so had to open windows, which we don't mind, but we are right at the entrance so it was very loud and difficult to sleep.
Review 111:Location, location, location.
Review 112:Food far too overpriced €39 for an omlette! - and hotel needs a lot of updating. You pay the price for staying in the mountain and we were overall disappointed at just how commercialised it all was. Next time, I'd arrive for the morning only and not bother eating on the island at all. Tourist Central!!
Review 113:Location, for the Mont if you really want to stay there.
Review 114:We walked up 3 floors and then walked outside to a different building and up 2 more floors. No a/c. The restaurant was expensive for what you got. Breakfast was 25 euros each
Review 115:The staff was pleasant
Review 116:Because of the renovation of the road approaching Mont St.Michel, the shuttle bus from the car park stops about 200-300m from the drop off point ...so it's a bit of a walk ... in our case with suitcases and a stroller with 2 year old at 3am , not a great welcome to a long journey from UK.... Make sure u r fit. !!! Staff were good but you should note that you need a passcode number to get into the carpark ? so ring / email on advance to avoid the 40mins delay we had !!!
Review 117:Right in the centre of Mont St.Michel
Review 118:Restaurant is far too pretencious! It was too average for the amount of money they charge. We've eaten and drinken far better for less.
Review 119:We loved everything about the facility and its location.
Review 120:Sub- par room and bathroom. No wall shower in bathroom, just a handheld shower. Room on top floor gets very hot in the summer. No fan or AC. If you open the windows to get some fresh air you are exposed to the noise from the construction site and crowds at the entrance. Wi-Fi did not work. Poor hotel capitalizing on its location within MSM
Review 121:Good location at the entrance of MSM
Review 122:View of rubbish for price paid is very sad and annoying. Tv down. Wifi down. Carpet was old and dirty. 3 floors and no lift....... La mere poulard appears to own St Michel...... 25 euro each for breakfast.......
Review 123:The evening meal was very good.
Review 124:The noise of the construction work outside - which of course is unavoidable so not really a complaint
Review 125:The location, the food, and of course the history of the hotel and the prominence the hotel gives to its former guests - each photo telling a story - and if you know the history of the 20th century you know it was a hard and difficult one - the idea that Hemingway drank and ate in this place after the horrors of Normandy and D-Day is very poignant - utterly fascinating and feels like a step into history. Having worked in Normandy for 25 years against the AREVA plutonium plant at la Hague I have always wanted to visit the mont and now I have - my friend from the US totally loved it ! and to be staying on the island that was the inspiration for Lord of the Rings Gondor - how exciting is that ! One tip I would encourage your guests to visit the abbey in the evening - it was stunning and very moving - and I am a virulent atheist - the harp playing was beautiful have a great summer
Review 126:The hotel is the first building as you walk onto the island. Although convenient for dropping your luggage, it is also the busiest place on the island. Construction is going on right outside your window. Even when that project is over, tourists come and go through the gate all night. It is a noisy location. The trucks that supply the island arrive early in the morning and unload right outside your window as well. I would chose another hotel further up into the village.
Review 127:Loved being on the island. Having the morning and the evening to wander without the crowds is ideal. The room was on the top floor and faced the water - but the main part of the hotel really faces the land bridge and is right at the main entrance to the city.
Review 128:WiFi did not work at all. Hot water was not really hot. It was some smell in a room, but it disappears after leaving window open for a hour.
Review 129:Location is fantastic! You can explore Mont-Saint-Michel in the morning and evening hours while there are no tourists.
Review 130:The hotel should have made it clear how to get there. The web site said "parking is close by". This was rather inaccurate. Due to the work on the causeway, one cannot drive to the island. You need to park your car on the mainland, walk to the shuttle stop, take a shuttle bus to the island and then walk several hundred yards (with your luggage). The walk was not that bad but it took us 45 min to figure this out. Since we were late (due to spending too much time at the D-Day landing beaches) we did not check into the hotel until 9:30 at which point it was too late to get dinner on the island. Everything closes at 10 PM on a Saturday night. Thus it was not as nice as it could have been. The website should reflect what is going on wiht the construction and how to get there.
Review 131:This is a beautiful location and a nice hotel.
Review 132:The restaurant. It' a shame. Prices are too high for the food you get.
Review 133:Not very welcoming
Review 134:Good location
Review 135:Wonderful location!
Review 136:Small room
Review 137:Location
Review 138:Poor (nil) internet reception.
Review 139:Hotel was "ok". Abbey was fantastic.
Review 140:Good location & access to rampart walks.
