Reviews for Parador de Santillana Gil Blas

Review 1:This was the second of two Paradors we stayed in on consecutive nights and one gets the feeling they trade on the beauty of the buildings more than the facilities and service. Being corporate they lack proprietorial zeal and are not as luxurious as they once seemed. And €18 for a very average breakfast was over the top.

Review 2:Beautiful little town with stunning buildings. The Parador is one of them and feels special. Spacious room, comfy beds, decent dinner in the restaurant.

Review 3:We have stayed here many times, but this time the WiFi system had changed from totally smooth and seamless without password to annoying -- kept getting cut off and having to reinsert username and password. A small thing, but be warned the old-world atmosphere includes really creaky wooden floors and noisy hardware.

Review 4:- Location on town square - plenty of character - friendly staff - convenient free parking - medieval feel does not extend to the bathrooms, which are modern and very comfortable

Review 5:The breakfast was over-priced at 16 euros each.

Review 6:The hotel was ideally situated in the village with parking very nearby. The room was beautifully appointed. The breakfast was delicious.

Review 7:The most perfect location for an hotel, we could easily walk to several bars and restaurants and many shops all in a most picturesque and quiet village. The staff were always most friendly and helpful.

Review 8:Unfriendly attitude of most of the staff. Customer service almost non existant, especially in the dining room. Evening meal uninspiring and poor value for money. Breakfast better

Review 9:Atmosphere of the old building and our huge room.

Review 10:Access was difficult and parking tight. The restaurant service was poor and slow, if fact the kitchen closed during our meal preventing us from finishing!

Review 11:Attractive location in a pretty town and nice for a stop-over night. Luckily, our rooms (which were well-appointed and attractive) were in the main (old) building.

Review 12:Beds were a touch on the hard side and at 18 euros breakfast is too expensive for those seeking a light start to the day rather than a banquet

Review 13:Another splendid Parador and here it's in the very centre of a virtually intact medieval village but with some other notable buildings . Visiting Cantabria ? Then including a visit to Santillana is a must and staying at the Parador is the immersive option. Particularly good for the early morning experience before the village is filled with other travellers. It's a fine 18th century building (originally the home of a local baron) with some rooms in a nearby extension of apparently similar vintage. Fans of the Paradores won't be disappointed with big rooms, fine common spaces, a rather grand restaurant and a very attractive courtyard. Very close to excellent beaches at Suances the Gaudi buildings at Comillas and the Caves of Altimira

Review 14:Wonderful historic building. Beautiful airy room. Lovely space. Good bathroom with full length opening window-door... No steam into room. Great shared areas. Please tell staff. Highly recommend.

Review 15:Phones not working to call reception. No directions into old town; difficult to locate facility.

Review 16:Excellent location in middle of old town. Very friendly staff.

Review 17:My husband walks with a stick and even on the ground floor there are steps up and down to the lift and dining room.

Review 18:Staff friendly and helpful. Lovely large bedroom with dual aspect. Parking nearby.

Review 19:wifi didn't work and service a bit hit and miss in restaurant/cafe but otherwise 9/10

Review 20:an amazing and very pleasant place to visit and to stay

Review 21:Nothing bad to say. Price is high but they provide an excellent service

Review 22:The location is excellent, parking good and the Parador meets the high standard that I expect from the group. Food and staff are great and the ambiance in the hotel is of a peace and quiet . Ideal location for Santander ferry overnight stays.

Review 23:Breakfast rather awful. Hot food cold, cold food (jamon) very dry. However asked for hot eggs and they were produced. Had selected 2 recommended restaurants in the lovely medieval walled town/village - both closed on a wet Weds.night in late March. Lot os tours on our arrival in town, but the whole place seemed to shut down very early when they left.

Review 24:Staff very pleasant, nice welcome but not offer to take our luggage to room, which was fine. Bed very hard/firm, not comfortable for us, so neither of us slept well.

Review 25:Hotel Staff telling us that ALL Restaurants in the Village are closed in Feb which was untrue. Pretty sure we were told that so we would eat (and pay) for dinner in the Hotel. Shady!!!.

Review 26:Fantastic Restaurant in the Village. The Hotel building is a classic.

Review 27:Very welcome staff, we had a little problem with the room but it was sorted immediately so I have to say our stay at the parador was very pleasant. We'll be back again without a doubt.

Review 28:The staff was not very friendly or inviting and the service in the dining room was dismal. The dining room itself needs a remodel compared to the rest of the hotel.

Review 29:The ambience, the room, the entire hotel was just lovely and the setting perfect. We will remember it forever.

Review 30:Nothing negative as enjoyed every moment of our stay.

Review 31:Wonderful building. Great dinner....the dining room was eventually full but when we arrived we were shown to a table even without a booking. The location is so convenient for walking around the medieval town.

Review 32:A little pricey and there was a smell in the room of drains/ammonia.

Review 33:Different type of short break in a beautiful place. The hotel room was very nice and looked out onto one of the quaint side streets at the rear of the hotel

Review 34:Parts of the room was old fashion, due to the year of Construction of the building. Noise from other rooms. Difficult to find due to one way streets in centre (GPS of no use the last couple of streets, ask at the tourist office).

Review 35:The staff was very helpful. Hotel was charming. Nice bath room.

Review 36:AC didn't always work but if you open the window and can get past the street noise, you will be fine.

Review 37:Great hotel with a ton of charm. Staff was very helpful and accommodating. Beautiful building in the middle of town with easy access to plenty of good eating establishments.

Review 38:Breakfast was overpriced. No easy access to take luggage to elevator, had to go up steps.

Review 39:The Rustic Feel of the hotel was very appealing. The location was perfect. The staff was very friendly and accommodating.

Review 40:Hot water a bit unpredictable. Bed a bit solid. Dinner OK, but a little bit disappointing for €30- a head.

Review 41:Great location in middle of village. Private parking. We had 1st floor double room - reasonable size - shuttered, with small balcony overlooking quiet courtyard garden. Bathroom adequate. Breakfast OK. The village was wonderful - perfectly preserved, mostly traffic free, and quite a tourist attraction. All-in-all, a nice stay for 1 night.

Review 42:Poor bedroom lighting.

Review 43:Good location and revisiting one of our favourite places

Review 44:Restaurant service was lacklustre

Review 45:Location and characterful property

Review 46:N/a

Review 47:The style of the property

Review 48:bedroom had tree right outside the window - no view

Review 49:beautiful building in centre of town, excellent helpful staff, good restaurant

Review 50:Charge now for parking.

Review 51:Visited this little oasis many times and we are always happy to arrive and relax.

Review 52:Really poor service at the restaurant

Review 53:Wonderful setting. Brilliant room and balcony

Review 54:We waited over an hour before being given anything to eat or drink because they didn't have enough staff.

Review 55:Bad smell on the bathroom

Review 56:The hotel is pretty and well located

Review 57:Friendly and efficient personnel, great location, great facilities.

Review 58:Leaving

Review 59:The ancient building

Review 60:drinks and breakfast bad value

Review 61:staff and facilities excellent

Review 62:Location ,convenient for Santander

Review 63:The whole ambience of the hotel and its surroundings

Review 64:Breakfast was not included. Heating was too high

Review 65:Everything

Review 66:Nothing to fault

Review 67:The service is helpful, but a little grumpy.

Review 68:The lovely character of the old building.

Review 69:We loved everything about this place.

Review 70:The whole set up. Value for money. Parking across the road. And the cider in town. And the town.

Review 71:Excellent breakfast

Review 72:Dinner in the restaurant was very mediocre to poor and very overpriced.

Review 73:We liked the genuine feeling of a very old building updated where needed, but the major architectural elements are retained.

Review 74:While the reception staff was efficient, they were not as warm asreception staff at other hotels and paradors we've visited in Spain. This should not be a deal-breaker.

Review 75:Santillana Gil Blas is a lovely parador, well situated on the PlazaMayor in Santillana Del Mar. Parking was definitely a plus, and thebreakfast was delicious. Our adult daughter shared our room on a singlebed that opened from an oversized arm chair, and she said that it wasvery comfortable. The room was more than ample for three people.

Review 76:The old wooden floors squeak!

Review 77:This was our fourth stay. Our rooms have always been large and comfortable and the staff courteous and helpful. The breakfast (not included) was quite good. The building is historic and interesting.

Review 78:slow service in diningroom- waitress dropped a glass behind where we were sitting and shards still there next day

Review 79:Traditional characterful rooms, nicely furnished

Review 80:The excessive price in comparaison of the other hotels of better quality in the village. The fact that a supplement is charged for the dinner on the terrasse when the weather is nice and our table nearer to the kitchen than the far one in the dininghall! An excessive price for the meals and and very stiff attitude of the stern guests!

Review 81:The location at the heart of the village, the interesting building, the garden and the food.

Review 82:Being charged 15% extra on food and drinks bills to sit on the terrace was really out of order . Lighting within the hotel is a little on the dull side

Review 83:Great Spanish town and this hotel is well positioned to really savour the atmosphere of times gone by. Cuisine is excellent .Balcony rooms are very traditional and well furnished

Review 84:This was our second stay. 12 years ago since we last stayed! It was perfect in every way, we stayed in the beautiful suite, the staff were great and the food superb!

Review 85:some of staff had sour expressions, seemed not to want to be bothered to help answer questions.

Review 86:beautiful place, lovely location. Loved the combination of contemporary amenities and old world charm.

Review 87:Having to pay 5€ for car parking it was always free for Amigos, no point in having a card anymore

Review 88:The room was fantastic and the staff wished my wife Happy birthday as we arrived

Review 89:A truly outstanding hotel in the heart of a very beautiful village. Rooms are very spacious and luxurious. A real treat at a reasonable price. Lovely terrace for those pre-dinner drinks!

Review 90:Dinner was just ok.

Review 91:Excellent location and friendly, welcoming staff. Our room was very comfortable and clean. Coastal villages are within easy reach and worth a visit. Personally I'd give the local cider a miss.

Review 92:Unfortunate "drains smell" meant we had to move rooms twice. Place seemed a bit institutionalised.

Review 93:Lovely old building; beautiful furnishings. Superior room a good size. Comfortable. Good A/C. Good food. Good central location for exploring the area. Free car park.

Review 94:The stylish accommodation in what was a restored nobleman's house, the comfort of the large bedrooms and lounges furnished with antiquefuniture and the elegant restaurant and good quality food. Also thesetting, in the heart of Santillianna del Mar, a beautiful village.Staying in the village was a big advantage as there was theopportunity to see it at times (evening / early morning) whenthere were no day trippers around. One of the nights we stayed we sawlots of antique Bentley cars as a Bentley owners' club wasundertaking a tour of Spain / Portiugal and happened to be stayingovernight at the Parador.

Review 95:Poor sign posting to find Parador in narrow streets. Understaffed for outrageous expensive inadequate breakfast. (no alternative in town at 9am) Plenty of restauants for evening meals from 8pm.

Review 96:Attractive medieval town, Parador was splendid old building clean and tidy.

Review 97:The location right at the heart of an exquisite medieval village. The hotel was a beautiful 18th Century building complete with suits of armour on the staircase, We had a large bedroom full of period furniture and the bed was pehaps the most comfortable I had ever experienced. The bathroom was almost as big. It was a real joy to stay there.

Review 98:A beautiful old building full of charm and character. The bedrooms were very comfortable with modern en-suite facilities. Lots of dining options in the town. Everything was very good value for money.

Review 99:Very poor lounge facilities, it might be better (and cheaper) staying inthe modern Parador across the square. It also proved very difficult toobtain a Mesa dinner card as most staff had not heard of it! This wasthe one Parador we stayed in which did not represent good value.

Review 100:Superbly located with magnificent vast rooms and the usual good Paradorexperience. Subscribe to a free Amigos card in advance for free parkingand a free drink in every Parador visited. The Mesa dinner card for 75Euros available in each Parador is superb value providng dinner for two,a bottle of wine, water and coffee all worth about 90-100 Euros but notwidely publicised.

Review 101:This hotel was not up to Parador standard. Very dark bedroom, no bath robes. We asked for a loan of an umbrella at reception and was refused. I think this hotel is very overpriced and not value for money.

Review 102:Nice Breakfast

Review 103:The fact that breakfast was to cost 18 euros each - far too much! Wewent out and got a brilliant breakfast for 5 euros each! Would havepreferred a bed and breakfast rate. There should have been moreinformation available about the building as it was historically veryinteresting.

Review 104:It was in a lovely central spot and was a beautiful building inside withhuge bedrooms.

Review 105:Sometimes the water was not hot but it did have a long way to travel to our room!

Review 106:Comfortable rooms, very welcoming and helpful staff. A relaxed and happy atmosphere. Dining room staff were extremely efficient and unflappable even when busy. Service was excellent.

Review 107:It is really not worth 175 Euro per night and 18 Euro per breakfast perperson. In the bar, next door, you can get coffee, orange juice, bread, tomato salad, cheese and olives for a quarter of this price

Review 108:Hard to believe this merits a five star. Very disappointing experience.Seriously overpriced and a poor advert for Paradors although we havesince heard from others that this is not unique. Secure parking chargeexcessive. Daytime snack menu doubles up as room service menu with 25%surcharge. Lacks quality, imagination and presentation. Bar serviceamateur. Don't ask for cocktails unless you can direct how to make them(only three available!) If all you want is an overnight stop and visitto Santillana del Mar there are far better options nearby.

Review 109:Location and secure parking.

Review 110:The Parador was convenient as our last night in Spain since we werecatching the Portsmouth Ferry the next day.Visited two lovely smallsandy beaches close by and admired the local countryside. Friendly staffand local specialities on menu well worth trying.

Review 111:My sat nav took me a confusing way into the village, which did seem tohave many groups of tourists bussed in during the day.

Review 112:Very well situated for the Santander - Portsmouth ferry, in a ferfectspot in a delightful little village. The rooms were exceptional, spacious, and the layout made marvellous use of the original building. There were plenty of bars and restaurants near by if one didnt wish touse the parador's facilities.

Review 113:Very expensive breakfast - went to nearby bar instead ( 7 euros asopposed to 40)Music in the Hotel's public rooms was awful - classical smalz - who wants to hear Elgar and Chopin in Spain?!

Review 114:A wonderful 16th Century Palace beautifully restoredUnique location in perfectly preserved 16th century village. Huge and lovely room. Nice but unpretentious staff Good but not spectacular food Very good vfm Excellent location for Picos de Europa, Cantabrian Coast, Santander (for travel to UK) and the Caves of Altamira. Good parking facilities and excellent close-by bars and restaurants

Review 115:Bedrooms are splendid, each different and grand, and the public rooms are delightful. Great town to visit: so much to see ...

Review 116:best location in town beautiful hotel

Review 117:Nothing

Review 118:Beauty

Review 119:Excellent

Review 120:Very nice hotel, good location, friendly staff

Review 121:Lovely medieval small town with beautiful buildings. The Parador is ideally located.

Review 122:Very Goid Experience

Review 123:No complaints!

Review 124:Set in great small village. Close to Altimira Caves. Great breakfast.

Review 125:Slightly hard to find.

Review 126:Lovely large room and bathroom, well appointed. Lots of nearby restaurants so not obliged to use the hotel restaurant.
