Reviews for Hostal Carlos I
Review 1:Had a bad experience checking in. Front office wouldn't accept booking.com price and wanted to charge more. Quite stressful as no other accommodation available. Internet was poor.
Review 2:Excellent location to get to border. Reasonably comfortable room for the price.
Review 3:A little bit tricky to find. Had to request bedside light bulbs!
Review 4:Staff were very friendly, although his lack of English/my lack of Spanish meant our communication was limited. Accomodation was comfortable and all I needed for an overnight stop. Bars and restaurants were easily accessible.
Review 5:At times there was a bit of noise from other guests and loud music from a bar in the square behind.
Review 6:Location is great - 10 minute walk to Gibraltar. Also very near bars, restaurants and shopping of La Linea.
Review 7:I don't smoke, when I arrived the room did smell of smoke and this lingered throughout my one night stay. One of the towels had an unidentifiable stain on it which I chose not to investigate further and made use of the others, which were clean.
Review 8:The hotel is probably the nearest to the border you can get. The bed was OK and there was lots of hot water. The hotel seemed generally clean and well kept. Other reviews have said this hotel gets a bit of noise from the street, this is true but did not bother me - I would stay here again for a quick visit.
Review 9:It was quite noisy. There wasn't much soap in the shower (only a sachet)
Review 10:Great location, a few minutes walk from the Gibraltar border, bus station and main streets. The facilities were basic but clean and the staff were friendly.
Review 11:There were couple of bars under my room's window. They played VERY loud music until 5 am. Even the windows very carefully closed I couldn't sleep. First time in my life. I don't usually mind about noise. At 7 am I started to hear neighbours waking up. The reception offered a room change but I decided to check-out.
Review 12:Very good location. Flexible staff.
Review 13:When we arrived they did nit find our booking reference. We booked a double bedroom but they could not locate the booking. We had to wait one and a half hour at reception while other guests were being sorted. Nobody said sorry. At the end the two of us got a single bedroom and we had to sleep on a single bed. The food we had in the restaurant was expensive and tasteless. I will not go back to this place.
Review 14:Nothing
Review 15:The rooms were ok, but really basic. There were loud noise coming from outside all through the night; sleeping was close to impossible.
Review 16:The location is really good, right in the middle of La Linea, close to the border of Gibraltar!
Review 17:Fantastic location - 7 mins walk from border and bus station, 3 mins walk from Underground public parking, close to cafes and restaurants. The whole place was very clean. The room was simple, clean, comfy beds, good aircon and a very good shower. Towels and sachets of shampoo/bath gel were provided. Staff were very friendly an helpful. Decent checkout time of 12.00. A great base for exploring the area.
Review 18:Staff didn't speak English at all, so it was quite difficult. I understand their politics and situation, but think that in business like this there should be at least some basic communication. It was hard but we would come back despite this. Also no coffe or tea. Restaurant was opened from 10am only if at all. We haven't really smelled any food or seen people there so would not rely on this at all. No wifi at the top floor in our room at all!
Review 19:Close to the border as well as in the centre of La Linea with many tapas bars opened late. Quite close to the beach too. Hostal was clean as well. Overall nice experience.
Review 20:Nothing.
Review 21:Small but clean and functional rooms. We had two rooms both on the first floor overlooking the road and had no noise issues at all. Everywhere was spotlessly clean. When we arrived we couldn't find the pre booked car park and the staff at the Hostal could not have been more helpful, even ringing the telephone number on the booking receipt and asking (in Spanish for us) for directions. Overall an ideal base for a trip to Gibraltar, although La Linea itself is well worth an explore.
Review 22:The hotel was very close the the airport, border and local shops, restaurants and bars but not noisy. Although the room was basic and small it was clean and comfortable for our 4 night stay. The location allowed us to explore the local town as well as Gibraltar with no need to use any public transport. Staff were friendly and welcoming and accommodating.
Review 23:WiFi not much use and staff not approachable or able to understand anymore than basic English, got zero sleep on last night due to drunk guests shouting all night.but is ok for what you need if there on business like me, but don't expect the WiFi to be 100%
Review 24:Comfy bed clean room Clean hotel
Review 25:one of the owners spoke no english no parking possibility besides a garage close to the border (22 Euro per 24h no information slow WiFi
Review 26:clsoe to the border good price
Review 27:Good location, 5 minute walk to the border but in quite a dodgy area of la linea, which it's self is quite dodgy. I'd pay more for a better hotel away from the centre of la linea but close to Gibraltar
Review 28:Well located to go to Gibraltar but the noise at night from the bars in the adjacent square was too much to be able to sleep well.
Review 29:I really, honestly can't think of any negatives.
Review 30:Great location if you're going into Gibraltar regularly. Just a short 5 minute walk. Also the restaurant downstairs gives a good value 3 course meal with bread and drink for 9 Euros. Good home-cooked, unpretentious food. Staff very friendly and the rooms clean. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED
Review 31:Parking was a nightmare as we had car towed away while checking in and putting our cases in the room.
Review 32:Plenty of bars and restaurants on the doorstep. 10 minutes walk to Gibraltar.
Review 33:Unfriendly manager. Spoke no English. Meal was just basic stew followed by cooked chicken pieces and fries. Bread roll in a basket but no butter.
Review 34:Close to Gibraltar airport
Review 35:Members of staff here don't speak English. At all. And don't understand English. At all. I'm aware of all the political issues of the area. But that's business, no? Why not learn a couple of English words?... That's bizarre.
Review 36:Location. Very close to Gibraltar. Price. Quite cheap.
Review 37:Our room was very small. The bathroom was so tiny you had to close the door to access the sink. Very noisy, both from parties outside and inside with doors slamming and loud conversations and laughter (the latter at night and very early in the morning). You could tell the room had been cleaned by the strong bleach smell, though the towels were small, grey and worn. Wifi was non-existant except for about an hour in two days.
Review 38:Location was wonderful - we only came to see Gibraltar so would walk straight to the border. If you go via the little shops you can have a cheap (cheaper than Gibraltar) Spanish Breakfast.
Review 39:- WiFi didn't work in room at all - no security at front desk. There was no one there to watch the keys two out of three times, so I just kept mine with me - no bar soap in bathroom, but there were little packets of bath gel and shampoo
Review 40:- great location on the main square next to the border of Gibraltar - less than ten minute walk from bus station - great price for one night
Review 41:Location is excellent just a 10 min walk to gibtaltar. The hotel is also right in the centre close to all the bars, which is great in the evenings. The food at hostal carlos is good value for money. Would definitly stay here again
Review 42:The only outlet was in the bathroom. I didn't enjoy charging my phone next to running water.
Review 43:Good location, a twenty minute walk to the center of gibraltar.
Review 44:Far to noisy
Review 45:Nothing except location
Review 46:nice small .clean room with everything close bye
Review 47:Very small room. I met friendlier staff on my travels... ok place for one night.
Review 48:Good location. Clean place.
Review 49:Nothing comes to my mind
Review 50:Very welcoming and helpful staff. Great location, cozy bed. Good aircon.
Review 51:Basic but comfortable for the 2 nights we stayed.
Review 52:All fine
Review 53:Great location for the border and surrounding Spain the restaurant was great value three courses and a glass of wine for nine euros ?
Review 54:Was pleased yes very polite staff and very helpful
Review 55:Excellent quality fittings. Comfy, clean, handy for Gibraltar airport. Plenty of bars and restaurants close by.
Review 56:Nothing more than a small room to spend the night in.
Review 57:One of two nearest to gibraltar.
Review 58:within 10 mins walk of Gibraltar airport
Review 59:everything was great :) shame that breakfast was not included in price, otherwise i cant say anything bad :) would stay again
Review 60:Next to Gibraltar and the bus station. Nice staff.
Review 61:Clean, decent facilities
Review 62:A little bit noise Friday night.
Review 63:Wi-fi
Review 64:Room dingy and smelled of bleach
Review 65:Good WiFi, close to Gibraltar.
Review 66:It's located just walking distance to the Frontier
Review 67:Small bathroom
Review 68:Basic, but value for money. WIFI was really good 5 minute walk to the border of Gibraltar Staff and cleanliness was brilliant.
Review 69:There was not connection covered in my room
Review 70:The staff and the location.
Review 71:The noise at night was overwhelming and the beds were springy and uncomfortable. Pay a little more so you can sleep!
Review 72:Location was good, and was clean
Review 73:The noise in the square goes on till beyond 5:30am It's not the hostals fault, just unfortunate positioning.
Review 74:Very friendly atmosphere
Review 75:Very good
Review 76:Second time had to argue about price, second time I won thanks to printed confirmation from Booking.com
Review 77:Room and lift
Review 78:Good location great value very clean
Review 79:great location for gib plenty bars cefes near. great stay.
Review 80:Noise from adjacent plaza late at night
Review 81:Clean room, comfortable bed, efficient staff. Great location
Review 82:The staff do not speak English or Chinese. It is extremely difficult to communicate with the staff as they speak Spanish only.
Review 83:Poor Wi-Fi Bed not very comfortable
Review 84:LOCATION FOOD EXCELLENT STAFF AND CLEANLINESS EXCELLENT
Review 85:I normally stay in Gibraltar, but for the location, value for money, cleanliness and the staff, Hostal Carlos is the better option.
Review 86:Very very clean!
Review 87:Restaurant was closed Saturday night.
Review 88:Could walk to Gibralter border, local supermarkets, the beach, local cafes. Two clean towels each every day.
Review 89:The closeness to bars restaurants and Gibraltar airport. The rooms are clean, comfortable with lots of hot water.
Review 90:Lack of pillows, view from window directly looking into someones apt. Not easy to find. Old towels and sheets. Base sheet too small so came of in night. Unable to open and close shower curtain. Needs refurb
Review 91:The noise! The square at the back of the place was extremely noisy- someone singing flamenco songs at 4;30 am spoiled our stay.
Review 92:The location was good and the place was clean.
Review 93:Window opened directly out over very busy bar, and we stayed on a Saturday night (fail) so very noisy with window open
Review 94:Central, walking distance to everything
Review 95:The location is perfect. only a 5 - 10 minute walk to the Gibraltar border. Also close to beachs in La Linea - would recommend Targatapas on Levante beach.
Review 96:A little bit noisy in the corridor.
Review 97:Excellent value for money. Paid about £32 a night. It was equally as good as a hotel we stayed at in England for £80 a night!
Review 98:People smoking in the hallway and a bit noisy at 3am from a bar over the road.
Review 99:Location to Gibraltar and good value for money. Beds comfy and plenty of hot water.
Review 100:It's difficult to park, but this is true for anywhere in La Linea
Review 101:Nice comfortable, clean rooms, good bathroom, towels etc. Good location, friendly staff.
Review 102:I have stayed there previously and found it to be very consistent. It is an easy walk to both bus station and airport and has an excellent restaurant which has good food at a very reasonable price plus it is always very clean.
Review 103:Parking needs to be found on the street or is expensive in the parking lot down the street.
Review 104:It's a nice 20min walk to Gibraltar, behind the hostal is a little square with nice restaurants.
Review 105:The noise from the bar down below that went on until until about 0300hrs on our last night. Even with the shutters down and the curtains and window closed the noise of the "Disco" was dreadful
Review 106:The friendliness of the staff and the location of the hostel
Review 107:Can be noisey from traffic at front or the bars in the square at the rear,,, but this cannot be helped and is not the fault of the hotel,
Review 108:Nice little hotel, staff very helpfull, very nice cleaner that did a good job.. very good location for both La Linea and gibralter.
Review 109:The wifi signal on the 3rd floor is weak, but acceptable. If you have a room overlooking the square, you'll want earplugs in order to sleep at night. Alternatively, you can have fun partying until 3am. :)
Review 110:Location is perfect for a visit to Gibraltar. The border is a 5 minute walk. The bus station is 3 minutes on foot. Great staff, too. Helped me get online with their wifi. The restaurant downstairs was very good for lunch. Good value and great location.
Review 111:toilet smelled bad, plaza behind hotel had several very noisy bars with people partying until 4 or 4:30 am on weekends, earplugs were an absolute necessity, inconsistent wifi
Review 112:convenient restaurant downstairs, great location for gibraltar visits, good value for the price
Review 113:Some people were talking on the street at 2am and some yelling at 5am (beyond hotel's control).
Review 114:Staff are very friendly. Only two minutes' walk to Gibraltar border. Room is clean. Facilities are in good condition.
Review 115:I couldn't use the wifi service in my room which was on the 3rd floor.
Review 116:The staff are very helpful and considerate. The room was clean and well equipped and will be staying here again when I go to Gibraltar
Review 117:The bathroom is very small and showers need updating. There eas alot of noise from the next room..the guests werein very late and nade an awful lot of noise with shouting.
Review 118:The staff were very helpful. The location was good.
Review 119:Bathroom a bit of a squeeze but then I am a large guy
Review 120:The informality . The rooms were laundered and tidied to a high standard on a daily basis. Bed was comfortable, ideal no frills budget accomodation. The staff were friendly and helpful
Review 121:It is next to a busy square which was great for drinks & a meal nearby, but it was a little noisy. Didn't really bother us, but just a warning if you are looking for somewhere quiet.
Review 122:It was a lovely room, very clean & comfortable beds. Staff helpful & quick & easy check-in, also cheap coffee in the morning which they let us take to the room. The location is perfect for La Linea or Gibraltar, as it is only 5 minutes from the border & easy to find. I would recommend this hotel.
Review 123:The only thing I would have liked would be a mirror in the bedroom, there was one in the bathroom but not in the bedroom.
Review 124:Excellent location for both La Linea and Gibraltar. Very reasonably priced accommodation. Very friendly staff and a lovely atmosphere in the restaurant. The rooms were clean and just what we needed for a couple of days stay.
Review 125:stayed one night as a stop over to get to Gibraltar airport. Close to the border so able to walk through it and into Gibratlar. Room very basic but we only wanted it to sleap in one night. ideal.
Review 126:If you are looking for an inexpensive and clean accomodation close to Gibraltar, look no further. Carlos 1 is very close to Gibraltar border and from the La Linea beach and is just in the centre of a nice town. The staff is very friendly and WIFI is working pretty well also in the room. The nicest thing is perhaps the restaurant: no matter what you order, it will be delicious (in the weekend the restaurant is closed but you can walk to Carlos 2 in the other end of the road to get same quality of food and same excellent service).
