Reviews for Hotel Rex

Review 1:The bathroom was poorly laid out. Breakfast was poor - lots of choice but very uninspiring. There was no bar in the hotel. However, the hotel will soon close for a complete revamp.

Review 2:Very good location on Gran Via. We had a large and welcoming room at the front with views over the lively street below.

Review 3:The only complain I have is that my room was very small as well as the bed (double bed). My husband is very tall and barely fit in it.

Review 4:Loved the location of the hotel. The breakfast was excellent!

Review 5:- night shift old woman and old man staffs are very unkind. They gave us very dirty and small room on the very corner of the corridor. And i asked to bring something to the room several times, but they ignored then i had to go downstairs and bring it. The room was really terrible. The room seems never clean up and feels someone is using. It seems that i booked the hotel with the cheapest condition that they promoted on booking.com. Feels so uncomfortable and terrible while i was there

Review 6:Breakfast, 3 metro stations are near from the hotel - the woman staff with glass is very kind.

Review 7:Staff could not have been more helpful if they tried, nothing was too much for them. Lovely lady cleaner on our floor was extremely efficient and helpful. Breakfast was very good.

Review 8:Very noisy cleaning staff, one morning talking very loudly right outside my room (414) over a long period of time (probably talking to each other from different adjacent rooms, or in the corridor outside my door. The next morning, a noisy hoover again woke me up when the room opposite was beeing cleaned. Since breakfast lasts until 11.00am, having gone to bed very late the previous night, I thought it unteadonable to have that much noise at 9am in the morning. A broken towel rail in the bathroom fell off several times during my four-day stay. Could easily have been fixed the first day, perhaps? Finally, the lifts are really slow and very very small. On most occasions I had to give up and use the stairs instead.

Review 9:Location- Reception staff - Comfortable bed - Good wifi connection and speed- Fair breakfast.

Review 10:The hotel is in need of renovation, the walls are too thin, and the doors are too loud. It is impossible to sleep after 7.30, or if the neighbors have an early departure. The room was too dark. This was my second stay with this hotel, but previously I had better room - it was possible to have normal sleep before.

Review 11:location

Review 12:The hotel is run down. Facilities are old and grubby. Bathroom tiles have repair sealer on top of sealer. Skirting boards coming off the walls. Light switch came off the wall.

Review 13:Location

Review 14:Room was very noisy right next to the lifts, but we didn't ask for move as only there one night. So hotel didn't have chance to offer any help.

Review 15:Great location, lots of choice at continental breakfast. Large clean room. Hotel had luggage storage facility. Metro station across the road. Plenty of shops and places to eat close by. Good price too.

Review 16:needs updating, they lied about me having a balcony(confirmed via email i got a window and was told tough!) they give the spanish people preference over English and had to wait 20 mins to seated for breakfast!

Review 17:I Liked where is was in the middle of Gran Via, the beds were comfy and it was clean

Review 18:Stayed one night on my way to Salamanca and ithe hotel was very good vale and ideally located on Gran Via and close to the Metro. Freindly and efficient staff (including an English speaker from Louisiana!)

Review 19:1.Too dark in the rooms 2.Most of the time lamps were out of order even after complain. 3.Once cleaners forgot to clean the room 4 .The elevators too small 5. Charging of money for every use of the safe

Review 20:Only the location

Review 21:The reception at the arrival was very BAD! The room was not in the neighborhood of a *** star hotel and had a bad smell!

Review 22:ONE of the daytime receptionist staff was very polite and helpful!

Review 23:This isnt hotel for 3 stars, personal very unhelphul, they have also 2 elevator very small and you must wait 10-15 min until you can go inside.the light is not very good have only two lamps in the room. And the breaKfast it wasnt very special, also fruits are sour because some was for few days there.

Review 24:The most important thing was the location, very central located on Gran Via. Close you can find metro station and bus station, a lot of shops, etc...

Review 25:Location on main shopping street. Lack of bar or rest area.

Review 26:Breakfasts really great! Staff really helpful. Easy access to tour buses for disabled visitors.

Review 27:Room was VERY VERY NOISY. No tea or coffee making facilities in the room which is a shame cos a last cup of tea or coffee in the evening and a first tea in the morning would be lovely.

Review 28:Location was excellent.

Review 29:Could do with some little improvments, traffic very loud to hear

Review 30:Breakfast was okay, hotel reacted quickly on our problem with the room that nobody had checked in some time before maybe.

Review 31:Not a bad experience, however would have preferred to have option on a room with window even if it meant paying more.

Review 32:Lovely clean bedroom and bathroom. Hotel staff were lovely, always very helpful and friendly. Breakfast was brilliant!

Review 33:We were disappointed with the room we were allocated on check-in. It was too small for 2 people to move around in comfortably, especially given that there were 2 suitcases also in the room - 4 nights of cramped living did not appeal. The room was nothing like the web photos showing rooms which were spacious & comfortable.

Review 34:When we expressed our disappointment with the room to the staff they agreed to move us to a room which was more like the ones shown on the website. The staff were a little embarrassed about the inconsistency between the advertised facilities & the room we had been allocated. This made our 4 night stay at the Rex far more comfortable, but we would have preferred to have been given a good room in the first place.

Review 35:The most that really annoyed me that to go to the reception you have to get a tiny weeny lift down then again have to go down about 8 steps with all the luggage. Lucky that my old mum of 81yrs had help from us kids to maneuver her luggage. Also the rooms need quite a bit of updating.

Review 36:I loved the location, the room was clean but furniture outdated. Breakfast was good value for money

Review 37:The hotel is a bit run down so can cause some fears at first, but it is fairly clean. Noise insulation is not the best for light sleepers but had no problem falling asleep.

Review 38:The location is good, although on the north edge of the center. Breakfast has a good variety of choices.

Review 39:Great location on the Gran Via, everywhere is walkable from the hotel. Check in swift and we were given the room well before the allocated check in time. Triple room was big, good bathroom and safe, free wifi. Breakfast was good and plentiful. Hotel itself is a little "tired" in places, I believe it is being closed for refurbishment soon. But, it's fantastic value for money and a great location. Highly recommended.

Review 40:The hotel charged me before the promised time and charged my credit card twice, luckily I noticed and informed the staff. I hope they only charged me once after I complained.

Review 41:The good location of the hotel and peaceful surrounding.

Review 42:The staff wasn't especially friendly. A smile never hurts. The keys to the room (magnetic cards) failed us a couple of times and we had to go back to the reception (with that slow elevator) to fix them.

Review 43:The rooms were clean and big. The hotel is on the largest street close to plenty of things and also a metro station.

Review 44:Noise had bedroom at front of hotel on main road advise tick quiet room went in November so no air con had to have window open which was not good outside noise was bad other than that can't really fault hotel

Review 45:Good location easy reach to metro stations tour bus and shopping on your door step plus Oskars restaurant/cafeteria located a short walk from hotel great food and good value for money. Small shop/ restaurant next door open till 3am for bottled water takeaway snacks and eat in food

Review 46:The room windows led to an inner yard so that the room was quite dark.

Review 47:Very clean hotel, great position in the centre - two minutes from the metro station Callao. Helpful staff, good breakfasts.

Review 48:Was on the 8th Floor ( Room 801) and could not always get internet connection( it dropped in and out) One night could not get a significant signal at all

Review 49:Liked location, friendly staff, breakfast, could leave bags in storage

Review 50:- No Fridge . - No door key for bathroom. - rome is not isloted and so niicy and you can hear the next - room sound. - too old furniturs. .No Air cool condition-

Review 51:the hotel was very clean The breakfast was good .It was very good value for money . very central . not too noisy for being on a busy road .the beds were very comfy.the staff were very nice and helpfull

Review 52:Facilities were old fashioned. Loo was under the sink, literally. Two small lifts were inadequate for the numbers and size of hotel and one stopped working. Had to go down to reception and to access lifts. Receptionist not welcoming on arrival.

Review 53:Location was good.

Review 54:Lifts were very small. Generally facilities needed updating. Room smelt of smoke.

Review 55:Great location, very central. Good breakfast In the morning. Staff were helpful.

Review 56:The first room that we were given was not suitable. It was small and dingy. However when we complained the staff were excellent and moved us to a nice room overlooking the Gran Vie.

Review 57:Location was perfect. Walking distance to most of the historic sights. Close to good bars and restaurants, cinema, shopping and theatres.

Review 58:Unwelcoming start at reception. Two small lifts that weren't enough for the clientele and one of which stopped working. A toilet that was tucked under the sink - literally!

Review 59:What was very awkward and uncomfortable is that to go to reception area you have to get this small lift and once you get out of the lift you have to carry your luggage a few flight of stairs. Can you imagine if lift is out of service?? Also no jug for hot water to make a cuppa in room.

Review 60:I liked the location a great deal as it's right in the center. Also the breakfast was fairly good considering the price we paid.

Review 61:We were greeted with very grumpy staff whom weren't very happy to be there. The lift situation is a joke, very tiny and there are only two. So at 10:00am in the morning it would take up to 20 mins just to exit the building. The rooms were very dark and the walls very thin. Our room was next to the service door and we could hear all of the housekeepers arriving on our floor in the morning with their trolleys. The fire alarm went off twice during our stay, both early in the morning waking us up. A positive, our room was very clean and the location is great. However in saying that this hotel is not worth staying at for the great location or price.

Review 62:The location is fantastic.

Review 63:Rooms are very old, everything in the bathroom is very old as well. Tap is falling off the wall. There is no lighting on the ceiling. Only bedside table lamps. Breakfast is very basic and not tasty. Extreme noise can be heard from the street all night. Impossible to sleep

Review 64:Staff are pleasant and polite

Review 65:Location superb, small room, yet clean.. good brakfast.

Review 66:Front desk are really miserable when it comes to help you to book a tour, or arrange to attend a show, all the information given to us was tottally incorrect?????

Review 67:There are different standards of rooms which the hotel donot tell you, you might think you have a good deal on booking websites, however you haven't , the room I had was noisy, cramped , stunk of smoke after requesting non smoking, bed was old & rickety , the staff were confrontational, not helpful, they live off the location, nothing else, very poor stay .

Review 68:Would have liked a double bed rather than two singles pushed together. Booked room with view, paid extra ,bit disappointing as was our 30th wedding anniversary. Not as romantic as I hoped.

Review 69:Good location nr metro. Superb buffet breakfast. Interesting building with character.

Review 70:The hotel was very tired. It needed a good paint and new furniture/bathrooms. Seemed expensive for what it was, but Madrid hotels just seem to be expensive in general.

Review 71:The location was ideal for everything we wanted to see in Madrid.

Review 72:The breakfast was the same every day with hot dogs as sausages!

Review 73:Not much - this hotel is most definitely not a 3 star establishment. It's in city centre location - but that is a drawback as it's noisy at night and in the morning! The staff were pleasant and doing their best in a building that needs a complete refurb. We had a crack in our ceiling which did not look safe!

Review 74:Moving luggage in and out was a bit difficult but it was made as easy as possible considering the circumstances.

Review 75:Location and the delightful buffet breakfast.

Review 76:Very noisy. Npise from a very Elderly plumbing system kept me awake all night. Rooms very dark, only small lamps with no overhead lighting. Had to keep bathroom door open with light on to see

Review 77:Good location for tourist areas & Metro

Review 78:Some of the staff have very poor english so asking for their advice or directions was a bit hit and miss

Review 79:location and the views from our balcony. Gran via is a great street so many shops and restaurants

Review 80:The noise of traffic went on through the night. The layout was bad with only access by small lifts. The food was basic.

Review 81:The hotel was central and close to the metro.

Review 82:I asked for an interior room at the desk. We got one not directly at the avenue, but in a corner. From 3am until 5am was impossible to sleep due to street cleaning work.

Review 83:The location

Review 84:The bathroom, which is so elevated from the bedroom. Aircon was not functioning properly.

Review 85:Close proximity to the train station, and very central. Walking distance to the restaurants and shopping area.

Review 86:The location was great and the staff most helpful. Our room was bright and airy and, although no view, was most comfortable. Some reviewers have mentioned the reception location being below street level but that was fine by us. I think the others may have been travel weary! There is a lift to it and two more lifts taking you up to the room. These lifts are small ones but hey this is Europe! All in all a good stay with loads of restaurants around for breakfast or dinner.

Review 87:Room was very depressing and old, but it was good price for city center . Place was clean, perfect for just sleeping over. Bed was very uncomfortable

Review 88:Hotel was in city center , staff very kind,

Review 89:The smell of the mold in the closet , and the room was too small, very old hotel that needs renovation. The bed was ok pillows were bad uncomfortable.

Review 90:The location was excellent in the middle of the city.

Review 91:The staff….they were very friendly and very helpful, especially Francesco. We had problems with our cell phones (US based), and he gave us advice about sites, tickets, transport. Great location!

Review 92:The main reception rooms are tired and need to be refurbished. The bathroom in the rooms are a disgrace, The bath/ shower was chipped broken tiles on floor radiator peeling paint. The cleaner keeps the area clean other wise it would be a disaster. I don't think the hotel should get away with offering this standard to visitors. I wouldn't recommend this hotel to anyone.

Review 93:The location of the hotel is ideal. You can walk to all the attractions or use the metro which is on your doorstep. Our room was a good size and clean.

Review 94:Only 2 very small lifts and often a queue, needed to use the lift as stairs not available 1st and 2nd floor would really benifit from some outdoor space to sit as weather was lovely

Review 95:Loved the location and the general aubiaunce Hotel was an old cinama very interesting loved it, just like being in New York.

Review 96:Even though we were on the seventh floor it was still very noisy even in the night, especially on Saturday. The breakfast was adequate but not very imaginative and after two or three days even boring.

Review 97:The Rex is in a very good location for getting to all the sights and the stations and the airport.

Review 98:at the front door Gran Via level people using the entrance behind lift so avoiding reception,,,,,not good security

Review 99:Staff at reception, Valentina always there with a smile to help in the bedroom and how to make the beds.

Review 100:The hotel is old and rundown -- mold in the bathroom and windows that don't close tightly. There has been little effort to maintain the hotel.

Review 101:Staff was helpful. Location on Gran Via was good.

Review 102:Room had awful view to grubby walls at back of building and was otherwise dark and pokey. No mini fridge or in room beverage facility. Fittings in disrepair.

Review 103:Great location in the heart of a vibrant city.

Review 104:Location is spot on, right in the center of Gran via. Staff were very helpful, just a pretty standard hotel, nothing special, slept comfortably, no complaints.

Review 105:Curtains not wide enough to fully cover window - street lights glowing in the room. Room safe gobbles up 1 Euro coins for fun! Elevators to Reception - in order to exit hotel - useless. Also used to get to Breakfast room.

Review 106:Price

Review 107:Bathroom too small to stand in front of the loo. Only one uncomfortable chair. Hotel showing its age

Review 108:Helpful and efficient staff. Very clean. Big bedroom. Very well situated.

Review 109:There was a hole in the mattress & the springs stuck through. The water/ plumbing was very noisy. Woken up in the night by toilets flushing & showers running.

Review 110:Location. Helpful Staff.

Review 111:Unable to get to room without having to use stairs into hotel. Lifts extremely busy at breakfast times.

Review 112:The location was excellent. Touring bus stop is across the road from hotel.

Review 113:The beds are very hard with thin mattresses.

Review 114:Staff were helpfully and friendly, breakfast was ok for that star rating. It was clean which is always important.

Review 115:Location is good - on the Gran via and a short walk to all main areas - Plaza Del Sol, Plaza Mayor, Retiro Park etc. Room was small - single room but fine and clean and well furnished. People on reception were very helpful and friendly. Would def recommend.

Review 116:It was really cold in the room, we went there in September, but it was chilly outside, so when we requested the heating, we were told that the hotel has central heating and it will not be turned on until October, so it was really really cold in the mornings and evenings.

Review 117:The location is very central and staff was very helpful, Breakfast is very nice as well. It has a good Metro access, located withing the walking distance from Sol and Royal Palace

Review 118:need to improve breakfast and it would be good to have coffee / tea facilities in room. Otherwise excellent location and value, friendly and helpful staff.

Review 119:The two lifts will only take 3 people in one and 4 in the other and you can not walk up to your room as there is no access between the reception (basement) to floor zero (breakfast) so everyone has to use the restricted lifts even if they are on the lower floors. This causes a bottle neck.

Review 120:The location was ideal to explore Madrid on foot. Walking is easy as it is mostly fairly flat, their is a slight slope up to the Gran Via from the south and we never used the public transport apart from getting to and from the hotel from the airport. There is a long walk from arrivals to the metro. We had a room with a balcony on the 9th floor (905) which gave you a view across the roof tops and down onto the Gran Via. There was also an opportunity to sunbath in the late afternoon but it is ideal to sit and relax before exploring the city further.

Review 121:two very small and slow going elevators what requires sometimes waiting time when you depend on them

Review 122:Located very central in Madrid and very close to metro Stations, very friendly and helpful staff, nice breakfast, excellent working free WiFi and additional internet facilities, late checking out time

Review 123:Wrong room provided so had to change. Insufficient bedding so requested more. Lifts too small so a regular annoyance. Interior decoration is deteriorating and the exterior needs complete repaint NOW.

Review 124:Excellent location Friendly staff IF English-speaking personnel on duty, otherwise poor communication. Good breakfast.

Review 125:Difficult to bring suitcases up and down, in and out. because of small elevator, somewhat confusing ro check in at lower level. If arriving othern than in taxicab, one must get off on side street and lug suitcases to the entrance

Review 126:Location, generous breakfast, amenities offered are the best features. Staff efficient and friendly

Review 127:Breakfast starts too late

Review 128:Front desk staff was extremely helpful!!! Clean & comfy but no frills. Just what we wanted. Good location to see Madrid night life!

Review 129:The bed was really hard and uncomfortable, not a real bed and small for a double. The room was dark and small because of no outside window. Shower hard to use kept hitting the wall.

Review 130:The location. Walking distance to popular areas and shopping. The staff were friendly and the room was clean. The breakfast was great.

Review 131:Very noisy at night both inside and outside - no sound-proofing on windows. Lifts very small. Bathroom - compact to say the least. Breakfast was basic. Wouldn't say that it was a 3* hotel compared to some that we have stayed in over the last week! Parking is at a car park a couple of streets away. We were travelling on a motorcycle and were charged the same price as a car 66 Euros for 3 nights - expensive to say the least!!

Review 132:Location of the hotel

Review 133:Entering the hotel is difficult, escpecially with luggages. The lifts are too small you need to often wait for them quite a long time.

Review 134:Perfect location right in the center.

Review 135:Tired and getting run down. TV never worked in 8 days. Only one of three lights in the bathroom worked. Damaged paintwork and damaged walls. Allegedly a 3 star hotel but down the bottom of that chain if it is. A lot of competition for the lifts during the morning rush hour.

Review 136:Great location. Quiet room on the 8th floor. Friendly helpful staff. Good breakfast and breakfast staff who really work hard. Good bed.

Review 137:Lifts were a little slow.

Review 138:Fantastic location, right in the action on Gran Via. Plaza Mayor and Plaza del Sol within 2 mins walk. Close to theatres and hundreds of restaurants. Excellent room and facilities.

The Fine Print
