Reviews for Cortijo El Sotillo

Review 1:There is very little to quibble as the price is very fair for such a pleasant stay.

Review 2:The location is beautifully tranquil and scenic with a general feeling of calm. The staff are very friendly and helpful with good food and well stocked bar. It is a short walk into San Jose which in late October is a sleepy largely unspoilt seaside village in the beautiful Cabo de Gata national park. There are lots of interesting places to visit in the area if you like nature, geology and scenery. It is best if you can get access to a vehicle to branch out into the sierras or up the coast. The little waterside restaurant at La Isleta offers one of the best views anywhere if the sun is out.

Review 3:Footpath required from outside of the hotel to the roundabout . At night it's dark and you have to rely on the motorists seeing you for this short distance..

Review 4:The accommodation is perfectly located for visiting Caba de Gate. On the outskirts of the town with a 15 'minute walk to the centre.

Review 5:Being British, I wouldn't have minded a kettle in the room!

Review 6:Our stay was fantastic. We were visiting off season but I imagine there would be a lovely buzz with more people there in the summer. It's in a beautiful setting, has a fantastic pool and the room was spacious and unique. The fridge was also very handy. The staff were extremely helpful and friendly.

Review 7:Rooms a little dated. Shower head bracket broken. Breakfast adequate but nothing special. Price a little high for standard of accommodation but this is typical of this area.

Review 8:Spacious complex with swimming pool, bar, restaurant and plenty of parking. Quiet location just outside town but within easy walking distance. Different layout with rooms all at ground level served by "village -style" footpaths.

Review 9:No shade provided around the pool so in height of summer almost impossible to lie beside. Not enough info given at check in and nothing in room to inform about Wifi, room safe or restaurant times for dinner and breakfast. A man checked us in but think the woman on the desk later might have been more informative.

Review 10:Cortijo was used in Fistful of Dollars, which was why we stayed there. Beautifully restored, with lovely rustic main hall.

Review 11:There were no eggs at breakfast and no one told us about the facilities (which there are many) when we arrived...

Review 12:It was a lovely, quiet, secluded place yet only 15 minutes walk to the beach. The staff were very agreeable and helped us with whatever we needed them to. The feel of the ranch and the horses nearby gave it a unique feel. We would definitely go back.

Review 13:We visited the much advertised chiringuito and wished we had not!!!

Review 14:Easy to find. Very friendly lady on reception who welcomed us. Room was spacious and clean. Had a little courtyard off the room which was very peaceful. Continental breakfast was plentiful. We had lunch too which was very tasty. Friendly lady behind the bar in the evening. Very photogenic old interior looks great on our pictures.

Review 15:Huge rooms. Great pool. Beautifull views on the surrounding hills. Very nice food also. Special mention to the staff which is helpfull.Definitely, a very good choice if you want to visit the Cabo de Gata Area.

Review 16:great environment, great architecture, great facilities, great staff, one of our best secondary homes

Review 17:The breakfast was over priced

Review 18:Perfect remote setting, very peaceful and quite. Nice pool and the receptionist was lovely!!

Review 19:Room very large and nicely decorated. I loved the space outside and the swimming pool even if we didn't had time to use it.

Review 20:Traditional. Rural (but not to rural) location. How rooms were laid out. Pool. Easy access.

Review 21:Helpful staff, size & comfort of the room

Review 22:Peace and horseriding

Review 23:For such a beautiful spacious room and location , lacks charm... One bare bed and pretty much it , so easy to make it look nicer ...

Review 24:Location big room

Review 25:bit of a walk along a road to get to the village - ok during the day but not so good at night as no street lights.

Review 26:pool and property overall

Review 27:Very comfortable spacious room with terrace overlooking the hills. Large bathroom with great shower.

Review 28:Nothing

Review 29:The staff were extremely helpful, the food very good and the riding wonderful.

Review 30:a little out of town, inland - so no chance of sea view

Review 31:nice big, comfortable room with patio

Review 32:There could be more shade by the pool. I think the price is a little too high for the standard of accommodation. The restaurant is a bit gloomy (we didn't eat there). And I agree with earlier comments that the horses in the neighbouring paddock look neglected and under-nourished.

Review 33:We liked the wild-west cortijo feel of the place - a little bit old fashioned, but in a nice way. The staff were great and we liked the quiet and the views of the desert from the private verandahs.

Review 34:We were not able to book any horse ridding class because it was fully, the hotel should send an email to offer classes when someone booked a room

Review 35:I like the privacy between rooms

Review 36:Lack of staff. Have stayed before, and always been able to get a coffee and a drink after dinner, if out and about. They are suppose to close the door at 11pm , but at 10.15 the hotel was closed and no bar facilities available. Also only one ( very nice) staff member for breakfast, and was obviously finding it difficult to cope.

Review 37:Location and layout. This is an equestrian hotel, and has organised holidays for those that want horse holidays, which I do not. But the location is excellent and in a beautiful area of the natural park

Review 38:Think before booking the hotel The fifteen horses that are looked afterin the grounds (which is supposed to be managed by a different company)are a disgrace to Andalucia and Spain. Their condition is appalling andmany are extremely weak (even though they are evidently earning goodmoney for the owners). Chaff could be made available and is stored; butthey simply don´t feed it to the poor creatures (tenth of a bale in fourdays for 15 working animals?). Shade could easily be provided in theintense heat; but they simply can´t be bothered to give the horsesaccess to it. Some should obviously be retired with Kissing Spines andother obvious weakness; but they make them do four hours of hard ridingin the heat. Now the hotel will `tutt, tutt` and agree with much of theabove and add other issues themselves; saying “it is the horse ownersissue”. It is not A. They are marketing the equitation aspect stronglyin all their materials and advertising. B. They provide logistics to itsuch as a fork lift when required. C. They use the stables as a storearea. D. They own and rent the facilities E. Management are fully awarethat the Guardia are very concerned. This hotel is owned by a once proudand horse loving family with many well deserved cups and rewards fromthe past. The younger members of the family are obviously turning a`blind eye´ to the appalling abuse of these horses so until the horsesituation is rectified think before booking the hotel. We saw severalguests who were seriously upset at what they encountered and we weretold the situation has persisted for two years.

Review 39:Think before booking the hotel. The hotel is perfectly good with niceinternal facilities, very clean, helpful staff and acceptable food(though a little expensive). But the fifteen horses that are lookedafter in the grounds (which is supposed to be managed by a differentcompany) are a disgrace to Andalusia and Spain.

Review 40:Even though the sun was hot, the pool was very very cold to swim in,which was disappointing. Also the families with young children - pleasewatch out for any alergic reactions to surrounding trees (olive) andinsect (caterpillars parasiting on pine trees)as our child, otherwisevery healthy allergy free, ended up in hospital on the 2nd night and wehad to leave earlier. Do some research before hand - this of coursedepends on the contry you are from and the season you are travelling in.

Review 41:The place and the atmosphere were very relaxing, with some beautifulviews of the mountains, shared space with a breath of tradition. Thetwin room was very comfortable and spacious (we have 2 small childrenwho had thei own room).

Review 42:Restaurant main meals a bit pricey. Ice cream kids loved. Waitress very attentive and friendly. Also some main meals not available.

Review 43:Very tranquil, scenic views, good base for travelling around Cabo de Gata, San Jose, Almeria and Granada. Staff friendly and helpful but it's better for you to know some Spanish as some staff know a little English. Very clean rooms and showers great, lovely hot water. Kids loved the playground. Small fridge for drinks.

Review 44:A nice and modern hotel with big rooms and a continental breakfast in addition to the Spanish one. Dinner is somewhat expensive though. We found an other nice restaurant near the port of the city. It's worth a visit.

Review 45:Mosquito nets are required at bedroom windows to avoid flies (and otherbugs) getting in.you don't have privacy if you pull out the curtains. the curtains they have block all light. the hotel should install a 2nd set of curtains that enables to keep the light coming in without all guests seeing what you do inside the room.

Review 46:The surroundings, parking area, swimming pool, option to rent bikes

Review 47:the place is popular with families so couples might need to time their use of the pool around the kids.

Review 48:great location and excellent room (you need to inform them if you want a double and not a twin room) with huge, comfortable bed and quiet air conditioning (essential in August). Friendly staff and lovely pool in a spectacular setting.

Review 49:The service was ok but we had little contact with the staff - thebar/restaurant was apparently open till midnight, but when we wanted alate night drink there was no one around. The breakfast was very poorquality and we stopped taking it there after the first day.

Review 50:It had a lovely pool, the place was quiet and very private. We had avery pleasant stay driving into town every morning for breakfast, goingto the beach and then returning to the hotel for a siesta or sunbathingby the pool. It was too hot for riding or tennis so didn't takeadvantage of these options. We didn't eat in the restaurant.

Review 51:Service and facilities not up to advertised 4 star status - at best an average 3 star. Lots of potential, but the little details that make the difference were just not there. Basically a horse farm with some rooms attached, beware the millions of flies! Lies outside of San Jose, too far to walk in, better to stay in town and stroll to the beach. Didn't try the food based on earlier reviews, but restaurant lacked any atmosphere at all. Can't recommend at current price.

Review 52:Unusual setting, beautiful buildings, good swimming pool.

Review 53:As said the hotel was a little cold.

Review 54:It was a very good stay, the staff were very pleasant and the hotel very comfortable. It could have been a little warmer in the hotel dining room!

Review 55:The breakfast is ok, but could have more variety. Would suggest 2ndmorning to eat out. Even this thou should not stop you from stayinghere. It is simply heaven on earth! :)

Review 56:Very nice place. Is a great sport for couples and groups of people. Thestaff was very friendly and we had a wonderful stay!!!

Review 57:Wifi sketchy in room. Twin room, would have preferred a double/queen.

Review 58:Comfortable, well-appointed rooms, firm beds, good temperature control.Great breakfast.

Review 59:We liked the place and surroundings; staff, excellent and helpful. Very peaceful and calm. We enjoyed it a lot.

Review 60:Unusual hotel layout with good sized rooms with own sitting out area. Staff very friendly.

Review 61:No 4 stars worth Pictures are giving a wrong image Old, not clean Dirty teras at the restaurant

Review 62:No insect screens on windows or doors.

Review 63:Nice big room, balcony and bed with plenty of parking.

Review 64:Rooms are very big and comfortable. The food in the hotel isreally good.

Review 65:Good location in wonderful area

Review 66:It is a magical place in a magical location.

Review 67:Poor breakfast

Review 68:As a cheap deal (offer from booking.com) it was excellent value
