Reviews for Hospederia del Real Monasterio

Review 1:The entry to the hotel it was hard to find, we were lucky to speak spanish and got help from the locals .

Review 2:The history of the building, it feel like we were transform to the 16 century

Review 3:Rooms are basic but you have everything you need.

Review 4:The location is great and this is an authentic property with real character. Perfect for one night as part of our tour. Great value for money.

Review 5:Located in a beautiful and historically rich medieval monastery. Our room had views of the surrounding mountains, which have excellent hiking trails. The door opens onto the balcony of a large cloister with space for strolling or sitting to enjoy the view of the building, town or surround country. Really a wonderfully relaxing spot and a great home base for hiking the trails. Very nice breakfast and an excellent restaurant to sample the local cuisine.

Review 6:Bathroom a bit cramped (but what do you expect in a converted Monastery?!). Also the evening meal in the cloister...envisaged for our final night didn't happen...Meals were inside the Dining room and the Restaurant wasn't opening until 9pm...a bit late ahead of an early start the next day....but no worries as the town square restaurant ended up as a memorable evening even if we couldn't quite manage to finish their enormous Morcilla de Guadalupe!

Review 7:Staying in what was probably a Monk's cell...(now a tad more luxurious!). The Cloister was beauooootiful!...and the Cubas Libres we had in it weren't too bad either!..see photo.

Review 8:Wifi located in just one area - but no huge inconvenience.

Review 9:Hospitality and old-fashioned courtesy of the staff; outstanding location in a cloister. A fascinating place!

Review 10:No bad experiences at all. (Wired internet in bedrooms is not a drawback for me as I carry a personal WiFi "hotspot" router that I can plug in. The bandwidth here is excellent).

Review 11:The setting is marvellous: guest rooms are spacious, quiet, clean and comfortable (although single rooms might be smaller according to some reviews). We found the restaurant to be excellent so we had two lunches and one dinner here. Helpful staff. Super access to the cloister and cathedral next door.

Review 12:The bad part was that the tour of the church was only in Spanish. It would be nice if they would hand out a sheet with English info on it. For example, the church is called the little Sistine Chapel, but had someone not translated that for us, it is one more thing we would have missed.

Review 13:I think this church is truly the center of Spanish Catholicism. The wealth was pretty amazing, with Michelangelo crucifix, paintings by incredible masters. It was as if time stood still. The black virgin here is the one Christopher Columbus prayed to, and when he returned to Spain, he went here to give thanks.

Review 14:The hotel is a typical 2* with basically furnished rooms, which judging from the size of mine, where the original monks cells. No air conditioning is the main problem, although a chair and desk in the room would be nice. Wifi only in public areas.

Review 15:Housed in some style around what appears to be the old cloisters and courtyard of the monastery next door, the Hospederia has perhaps more character than the Parador around the corner. Excellent couches in an unused lounge, wonderful courtyard seating, free parking and wired internet in the room.

Review 16:The access to the hotel and parking could be a little difficult to find.

Review 17:Converted monastery. Lovely and well maintained old building in a good location in the heart of Guadalupe. It was so tranquil, from the reception area and flowered courtyard through to the cloisters. Our room was large with an incredibly high beamed ceiling and opened up onto an outdoor courtyard. Staff polite and professional. Free private parking right in front of the hotel. Very good value.

Review 18:Staff in the restaurant could be friendlier.

Review 19:Clean, very comfortable room with lots of character. Part of the Monastery of Guadeloupe which means ideal to visit the rest of the Monastery.

Review 20:Restaurant in the hotel doesn't open until 9pm which is too late for us so we had to eat out. Wifi only works tolerably in the bar. (staff said it would work in the cloister, which is not quite true).

Review 21:location couldn't be better, everything is within a few yards, good range of restaurants handy. Cable internet in the room was fine for me.

Review 22:Dinner was poor - cold vegetables, indifferent staff and canteen like atmosphere. Bedroom smelt musty. When a group was there, parking was really difficult.

Review 23:Bar assistant very pleasant. Excellent location. Interesting building.

Review 24:Nothing to dislike.

Review 25:the hotel is a beautiful old building, well maintained and very atmospheric. It has a tranquility which is rarelly found in a more modern hotel. Staff very helpful.

Review 26:The first room was musty and not a place for allergy sufferers. The second room was smaller, fresher and less expensive but we were charged for larger room.

Review 27:The location and atmosphere are unique and relaxing.

Review 28:nothing bad at all ..

Review 29:The Monastery building - cloisters, bar, patio, bedrooms ..even the corridors are all breathtaking and it is a delight to be able to stay here.

Review 30:Breakfast room ambience lacks athmosphere - of which the rest of the house has plenty. Food o.k.

Review 31:Location - location...! Also wonderful staff, and the facilities in the house are way above 3 star level.

Review 32:a night in a real monastery, good rooms, good restaurant, affordable prices. it was around xmas, good heating, no problem with wi-fi they can give you a cable to connect. the place is awesome. a nice experience

Review 33:Signs directing us to it are terrible Upon check in staff was indifferent to us, not welcoming at all. Later a staff member was nicer. The wifi never worked and staff was unhelpful trying to get it to work, felt they mislead us by saying they offered it

Review 34:Location History Parking

Review 35:The door didn't fit very well into the frame and the floor the floor and being winter there was a constant cold draught. Because of the above reason and the height of the room, it was difficult to heat it up properly. When you remove the card attached to the room key from the slot before going out, the extra electric heating system (and I assume the air conditioning in summer) turns off.

Review 36:The location in an old monastery cloister. The peaceful environment.

Review 37:The dinner menu looked very basic with no choice of courses, although sounded to be good value. In the end we walked around the town and found a very nice restaurant prepared to feed us at 8pm... early for inland Spain as it is more usual not to start evening meals until 9pm.

Review 38:The well kept cloisters and gardens and historical setting of the accommodation was most attractive. Can't help thinking that must be a better choice than the Parador in this small town. Room was comfortable and spacious, as was bathroom. Parking is right at the door, but not initially easy to locate. We first parked at the foot of a long flight of steps, but moved car once we saw that parking was available nearer to entrance. Breakfast was very good, and waitress most willing to find me the right kind of black tea! Thank you! We speak enough Spanish to get by, but note that most of staff speak little or no English. Loved the atmosphere and rooms opening off the different levels of the cloisters. Sorry we did not have time to visit the museum part of the Monasterio as it did not open til 10 and they could not guarantee that the first group visit would happen before 10.30am.

Review 39:Everything. To sit in the cloisters with a drink looking up at the stars is pretty amazing! All around there are beautiful paintings and furniture, but the place is not 'bling' - and not intimidating. We have to go back. It's that good.

Review 40:Restaurant a bit disappointing

Review 41:Hotel is part of monastery and seems designed to the standards that senior clerics would expect. Solid and comfortable but staid

Review 42:For the price, nothing.

Review 43:the historic heart of Guadalupe. Fantastic value. very good evening meal with excellent local wine (Habla de Silencio) A truly beautiful building.

Review 44:We stayed two nights and on the first night had the 15 Euro menu whichwas very good value. We decided to eat there the second night but as themenu hadn't been changed asked for the 17 Euro menu which includedwine. 'Rosado please. Sorry, only red or white or water. But I wouldlike Rosado. Non! Ok I'll pay for a bottle and have the water. As weliked the salad we had the night before can we mix the menus and havethe salad from the cheaper menu. Non! You can only have what is on thatmenu. Ok.' The card we were given on arrival stated It is you whogives the orders. They ought to tell the waitress as we were the onlypeople eating on the second night and she could have been moreaccommodating.

Review 45:The peace and tranquility of the whole property. Spacious room withtraditional decor. Much character with high ceilings. Close to thevillage with its interesting architecture.

Review 46:WiFi not available in rooms but rather in bar and courtyard only. Loud barking dog and street noise outside #102.

Review 47:I loved the beautiful rooms and overall ambience of this monastery. The staff were very accommodating and friendly. The place is well maintained.

Review 48:Nothing to dislike

Review 49:Simply stunning building. Central location to Guadalupe. Parking felt secure. We didn't eat dinner in the restaurant so can't comment on the food. Breakfast was good though.

Review 50:An unforgettable experience ...to be able to stay (and very cheaply too) in a breathtaking monastery ,full of old pottery and relics ..to walk to your room through atmospheric clausters ...to sip a glass of wine looking at incredible archictecture ..in perfect peace ...and the beds are comfortable, the shower like a power shower and the staff are delightful. You would have to have a heart of stone to not love this extraordinary place.

Review 51:nothing, we would be very happy to return one day

Review 52:The monastery is an impressive building with quiet courtyards and lovely views. It looked much more impressive than the nearby Parador

Review 53:Authentic hotel

Review 54:no wi-fi in some rooms

Review 66:No wifi in rooms. Wifi spotty in common areas.

Review 74:Location and atmosphere

Review 75:not at all

Review 76:location close to real monastery

Review 77:A beautiful building, lovely courtyards. Like living in a castle in a bygone era.

Review 78:The facilities

Review 79:Atmosphere and lunch menu.

Review 80:Wi-fi only in bar area.

Review 81:Amazing historic building, felt like a 5 star hotel for a bargain price. Great breakfast and ideal location.

Review 82:We got there about 10 AM and they accommodated us with a room early. Plenty of hot water.

Review 83:No parking space available with nothing nearby and staff who offered no help. Impossible with heavy cases.

Review 84:The setting was quite stunning

Review 85:The palpable feel of history staying in a room right in the centuries old cloister.

Review 86:Nothing!

Review 87:Everything!

Review 88:Incredible place to stay.

Review 89:Breakfast staff rude

Review 90:Location

Review 91:Service,food all at a very reasonable price Only wished we could stay another night

Review 92:Wi fi only worked in the bar.

Review 93:It was in a most beautiful location . We loved it. It was a truly lovely building.

Review 94:Simple decor

Review 95:The opportunity to stay in such an iconic and historic site.

Review 96:great location. Lovley feeling in the hotel. Great value food

Review 97:Only had one meal, breakfast, which was average.

Review 98:Was more like a Parador but better than most and very much lower in price. Couldn't recommend it more highly.

Review 99:There is no information in English and very little spoken by the staff, though one or two have French. sign language gets you a long way, though.

Review 100:There is an extraordinary feeling of calm in the monastery. The buildings, arranged round a huge inner courtyard, are breathtaking and there are delightful places to sit . . . in the 'cloisters' overlooking the courtyard and in a wonderful internal garden. No-one bothers you and all the staff are there to help.

Review 101:Wifi connections were not always reliable.

Review 102:The building is obviously beautiful and also it is a very quiet and relaxing place to stay with good quality food and attentive staff.

Review 103:No breakfast before 8..30. Meal at night not before 9pm. desk staff some were very helpful early check out 8.10 for MADRID bus very grumpy.

Review 104:location room was kept spotless and good central heating november.

Review 105:We had a great stay here in La Rioja, the staff were very helpful andJesus provided an interesting tour of the vineyard plus a good tasting. The breakfast ladies were great and helpful/friendly

Review 106:The room supplied was not strictly as described - it did not have views of the courtyard nor did it have free wired internet. The room was adequate but small and a little out-dated.

Review 107:Location, and the atmosphere of the Hospederia were superb.

Review 108:The monastery was fabulous. Our beautiful tiled bathroom was formed from the turret of the original building. Enormously high ceilings and exceptionally clean. A quiet, peaceful and very special place.

Review 109:When we arrived at 1pm to check in the receptionist took about 20 minutes to find out if our rooms were ready and was unaware that we had booked two rooms via internet, despite my telling her in Spanish that this was the case. Fortunately, checking out turned out to be much easier. The reception area appears to be badly laid out, with work areas scattered throughout the large room.

Review 110:We have stayed here before and have always found it to be delightful with friendly and helpful staff and good value for money. An oasis of calm in the midst of what can be a very busy town.

Review 111:The nasty cold meats in the breakfast buffet were not the fantastic Extremaduran produce I was expecting. The air con had seen better days.

Review 112:Stunning building. Beautiful rooms and surroundings. It's a monastery first and a hotel second so completely retains its integrity and splendour. The lovely barman who plied us with tasty snacks while we sat in the courtyard one afternoon drinking beer and wine and reading our books.

Review 113:nothing everything was wonderful

Review 114:historic building, part of the ancient monasterymodern and up-to-date furnishingsbeautiful courtyard gorgeous mountain viewswonderful friendly servicefabulous antiquesgreat restaurant

Review 115:Would recommend very good value for money especially on Sunday night. Good breakfast but apart from Monastery next door you are out on a limb about 1 hour from anywhere else. Trujillo well worth visisting.

Review 116:We liked the atmosphere of the monastery and the building was fantastic. The staff were extremely friendly and very helpful. Breakfast was plentiful with a good choice. We liked the rooms which were very comfortable although basic.

Review 117:Not just a criticism of this place but of a lot of hotels that we've booked through booking.com. We request a double bed. Often its we're actually asked to do this by the drop down box. We request a double, even putting it in the special request box as well but often end up with Twins and i just wonder if half of the places bother reading the request. We ended up with twins here and very hard one's at that. Reall pity because the place is amazing.

Review 118:A lot of people who come to this small town will do so because of the Monastery and shrine. Well you can't get much closer than staying in the adjoining building. Very opulent and historic. Ridiculous value for money to stay in this stunning building. God knows what it would cost in England.

Review 119:Beautiful historic building steeped in history. Wonderful location and views. Very central. Amazing views from bedroom.Good restaurant.Parking on site.

Review 120:The monastery is really atmospheric. It was more comfortable than I had expected, We arrived on a rather cold day in May, but once we turned the heating on in our room you could not complain and it was lovely and warm in the breakfast room/dining room. We had an excellent 3 course evening meal with wine for 17 euros each.

Review 121:it was all lovely.

Review 122:the location within the monastery is wonderful, and so atmospheric. The rooms are huge, well-furnished and comfortable. We travelled in April, and in the mountains the evenings are still quite cool, so it was lovely to have the heating on. The setting for the hospederia is stunning and very memorable. The staff were friendly and efficient

Review 123:The room was very dark (pretty much different from the pictures of theweb site). With antique furnitures, only one small window, two littlespot lights on the wall and high ceeling, the room was almost spooky.

Review 124:The room is spotlessly clean. Beautiful bath room. Big television.
