Reviews for Le Lion D'or

Review 1:Extra charge for parking lot. Internet kind of sloooow.

Review 2:location is top, close to the tapestry museum, shopping street and historic centre of Bayeux. Roomy hotel with large bar full of pictures of famous people who visited the hotel. Nice breakfast (extra cost).

Review 3:Central location in the town, very quiet at night. Ideal as a base to explore the WW2 museums. Lovely hotel with friendly staff, a comfortable lounge area with a real fire and a good restaurant.

Review 4:Staff was extremely friendly, location was great - right in the middle of town! The only issue is there is no elevator (just FYI). We would ABSOLUTELY stay here again if in Bayeux!

Review 5:Restaurant and bedrooms have been modernised in the current fashion of painting white over previously exposed beams and historic features destroying character of what used to be an excellent historic hotel.

Review 6:Convenient for Bayeux Cathedral and the Tapestry. Lots of D day photos and memorabilia. Comfortable lounge with bar for guests.

Review 7:renovations meant a lot of disruption in the morning. Parking reserved but not available on arrival. Had to park in hotel with difficulty.

Review 8:good comfortable hotel.

Review 9:Lovely old inn in a great location. We enjoyed our accommodations, gathering with friends by the fireplace for drinks and a great dinner in the restaurant. We would book again.

Review 10:Parking was a little funky. All spots are assigned, which was neat and had our name posted. Our car was right by the front door. They had to park another car behind ours which is fine if someone who moves it can drive a stick shift...had to wait a while for it to be moved in the AM when we were in a hurry to start our day.

Review 11:The staff was great, especially at the desk. They made our anniversary stay that much sweeter. The rooms are small and dated, but the bathrooms are new and modern. the bed was comfortable and TV worded great. Restaurant was very pleasant with excellent choices. The hotel is downtown and minutes from shops and restaurants of all types.

Review 12:Top 4 things I liked: 1. great location 2. Having a glass of wine in the comfy lounges after a full day of taking in Bayeux and surrounding area. 3. Noting historical pictures associated with Le Lion d' Or 4. Very pleasant guest rooms.

Review 13:Just have the right expectation. The place is very charming, but it is old. The rooms were very simple. Tile floors, outdated shower. But the charm was worth it!

Review 14:The hotel is tucked back from the main street. The restaurant was wonderful both for dinner and for lunch. Nice little bar near the front desk. Many famous people (mainly from years ago) have stayed here... you will enjoy seeing their photos around the hallways. We ate dinner there one night and the 2nd night right around the corner there are plenty of other places to chose from. Excellent location.

Review 15:This is a lovely, historic property. We appreciated the extremely gracious staff who are happy to help non French speakers. Restaurant on site ofers excellent, white table cloth service, and the location is convenient to the historic village of Bayeux and to the beaches of Normandy.

Review 16:Very comfortable hotel conveniently located near the old section of Bayeux. Short walk to the Tapestry. Many good restaurants nearby. Breakfast buffet was OK.

Review 17:The hotel seems sort of worn and could use some freshening, however I would still recommend to travellers.

Review 18:The location in town and proximity to the tour meeting spot was outstanding. Also there is onsite parking so you don't have to search for street parking.

Review 19:Our room was on the very top floor and there was no one to help us with bags. The whole hotel felt very understaffed, (no one to serve drinks in the living room, help with wi fi issues, etc.), but the one person on duty was always very nice.

Review 20:WE loved the charming setting and ambiance.

Review 21:The parking - so tight. Luckily park, leave it until departure. Noise - we faced the front street and usually I can sleep through most noise. This was really loud and constant and went until late. We did stay on a Friday night. Room 43. A light sleeper would be in real trouble. A heavy sleeper would wake as well.

Review 22:Great location. Good size comfortable room. Parking available (but depending which spot you are allocated can be VERY tight). You can arrive and then leave the car and walk to most things in Bayeux (drive if you are using as base for D-Day beaches).

Review 23:location: the town itself and as a base for exploring; meals- an excellent dinner and very good breakfast; comfortable areas to lounge and enjoy a drink late in the day; its history of visitors from WW11 until now

Review 24:Had to keep asking for things like replacement towels and tp, but not a big deal.

Review 25:Wonderful location in town, charming hotel, amazing famous guest list!, fantastic chef! Had a large newer room, very spacious!

Review 26:Receptionist, lady, forgot her name, told us at check in breakfast was included but it actually wasn't. On our last day, we checked out in morning because tour ended at 4 pm. Our train to Paris was 730 pm. We wanted to use wifi in lobby to check on few things and told no wifi available after checkout. We felt unwanted after checkout. Reception staff not that friendly or helpful.

Review 27:Ismael who was our waiter at dinner was very polite and patient.

Review 28:In Room 25 view of fire escape was horrible. Moved to Room 20 for great view, but hairdryer and shower arrangement were terrible. Restaurant menu does not seem to attract many diners. The wonderful, historical bar room has no bartender to attract guests, keep fire going. Needs a little marketing.

Review 29:Location and long history.

Review 30:Needed a fan or something. We happily slept with the windows open but would be an issue in summer. We stayed on the 3rd floor and walked up about 9 flights! So pack light!

Review 31:Loved the location.

Review 32:The Hotel is dated and the rooms are in desperate need of a lick of paint. The double bed booked was two singles butted together and very uncomfortable, small room and stuffy. Overpriced basic accommodation. Checked out a day early even though fully charged for two days.

Review 33:The location of the Hotel was our priority when we selected Bayeux as part of our holiday in Normandy when visiting the D Day landing beaches.

Review 34:The front desk representative wasn't so helpful in assisting on booking day trips for us unfortunately and quickly pointed to the brochure. Not much concierge here, so do your research on planning excursions. The wifi was decent, but noticed they blocked our camera from uploading pictures to share so be aware. One more thing, you can only have two devices per room, and we are a family of three ! They had to provide another room number and password for us to gain access.

Review 35:The room was clean and pleasant. The hotel has a lot of history with many stars and dignitaries that visited in the past and worth a visit. The best part was the restaurant in the hotel, so book your table and you will not be disappointed.

Review 36:We had two rooms, one for a couple and another for a single, and the single's room was a bit stuffy although the hotel provided a fan. The rooms are small but charming and very functional. The bathrooms are updated and also very functional.

Review 37:It's a charming hotel in a great location.

Review 38:Really disappointed in the Classic Double. Would hate to have seen the smaller original room we booked. Tiny room, no mirror except for in the bathroom, very little space to move around, no tea or coffee making facilities in the room. Woodwork in bathroom was badly chipped and in need of repair. There were bare copper pipes in the bathroom and bedroom. Site pictures are misleading - all rooms look lovely. Not surprising that the only picture of this room on the site is one of the room key only, not the room! In contrast, our friends were upgraded to a junior suite which was lovely!

Review 39:Friendly staff who put up with our attempts at broken French! Upgraded to a Classic Double on our arrival which was a pleasant surprise! Car parking available for 9 euros per night on site in small courtyard. Very close to all the tourist sites. Right by a good promenade of shops and restaurants so easy to avoid big charges for a hotel breakfast.

Review 40:I liked the location and our room size and the fact that it had a restaurant. The food at the restaurant was excellent, but was disappointed that we never were offered our check even when we asked for it. Apparently they bill directly to your room at this hotel.

Review 41:Service was a toss-up. They got us in for an early check-in. That was good. They had very slow service at breakfast. That was bad. The bed was overly hard and that made sleeping difficult.

Review 42:Good location.

Review 43:Hotel could use an update & the room we had (43) faced the main road. There's a streetlight on all night & early morning deliveries can be a bit noisy. Other rooms are off the street so they're probably quieter.

Review 44:Location was great

Review 45:No tea and coffee making facilities in room. Charged for disabled parking. A little tired in some of the public areas although I understand is under renovation. First room had no view and windows could not be opened as overlooked kitchen extractors so noisy and smelly if open. we were moved with no question to another room however

Review 46:Location, history, fantastic food, staff very helpful.

Review 47:They were fully booked for a reason

Review 48:Great location, pleasant environment, Staff was excellent. Great drive/walkup appeal. I would definitely stay there again

Review 49:Location. Off-street, secure parking, providing it's booked in advance. Friendliness of reception. Good dining on site. Excellent restaurant La Rapiere just round the corner. Key city sites within walking distance.

Review 50:The staff at Le Lion D'Or were brilliant, the location superb and the family room was spacious and well furnished with probably one of the best double sofa beds the children have slept on.

Review 51:in excellent position in the city, staff very polite and helpful, my only small gripe would be no tea or coffee making facilities in the room, but having said that if you asked at reception you could have it brought up, apart from that all excellent

Review 52:The decor of the room (34) was tired. American cycling groups are noisy especially at 08:00am in the courtyard.

Review 53:Location and view. Dinner was excellent, if a little pricey.

Review 54:nothing - it was all wonderful

Review 55:We were very pleased with our stay at Lion d'Or. It was a lovely and quaint facility with a friendly and helpful staff. Our rooms were clean and comfortable. Ending our day of tours with a glass of wine in the lounge amongst other relaxing travelers was the icing on the cake. Thank you:)

Review 56:had to wait whilst room was being prepared/ repaired

Review 57:location in centre of town, ease of access by car, dining room staff helpful and catered for diet, have stayed before because of its convenience

Review 58:I felt that my room(downstairs)was damp with some smell. The room for kids(upstairs) didn't have issues. I didn't request a change of room as it was close to my kids room.

Review 59:Staff was wonderful and the restaurant was serving a first class meal.

Review 60:The showers had mold, the rooms could use a major face lift. I was suppose to get a queen size bed and got two twins pushed together. Nothing like falling in between the two in the middle of the night. The hotel description says 24 hour front desk. However, when I tried to check out at 7 am they wanted me to check out later because "it isn't my job" to check people out. Very unimpressed.

Review 61:Large rooms and that's about it.

Review 62:We did not have any bad experiences, but we could not help notice that a couple at an adjoining table had to wait an hour and a half for a tornedos steak - there was clearly some problem in the kitchen but it was not explained with anything like the promptitude that it should have been. There were notices saying that some disruption was likely because of modernization work being done throughout the hotel; whether it will be possible to fit in a lift to the 3rd floor is questionable!

Review 63:Revisiting after 40 years and found to be much the same as then! Restaurant had a good choice of menus.

Review 64:The WiFi is a pain. It is overdue for an update-very outdated. No elevator was okay for us but can be a real issue for others.

Review 65:Very convenient location. Fun to see all the history and famous folks who have stayed here.

Review 66:Liked everything about this hotel

Review 67:Beautiful location near the center of this delightful historic Norman town. Charming rooms overlooking quiet courtyard. Lovely dining room with great breakfast, lunch and dinner menu. gracious service from owners and staff.

Review 68:There was an odd odor in the stairwell and bathroom. Was not a problem in the bedroom or elsewhere on the property. The service in the restaurant was efficient but very different from the US where people in the hospitality industry are very outgoing.

Review 69:Room and property were beautiful. Located on the main street in Bayeux. Food was excellent, especially dinner.

Review 70:I can't think of anything!

Review 71:Wonderful historic lounge with inviting fireplace, comfy chairs and historic pictures. Great place from which to launch our D Day tour. Rooms were quaintly French with updated bathrooms. Breakfast is a must!

Review 72:Excellent location for Normandy Beaches and the tapestry. Food was excellent, A la Carte was slightly pricey but there was a set price menu which was value for money. Lion d'Or is lovely will come back again.

Review 73:We went to their restaurant for dinner and found it to be completely overrated for the price. The dinner ended up being more than the cost of the room for the night. We wish we would have just walked down the street to anyone of the brasseries.

Review 74:They place was centrally located in town. Everything was walkable, only a 10 minute walk from the train station. The staff were very friendly and the rooms were simple but nice.

Review 75:No tea/coffee making facility or even a plastic glass in the room. Wifi signal strong but speed rarely good enough to even view an email.

Review 76:Bathroom, staff, location, allocated parking and restaurant

Review 77:Staff was very responsive and very accommodating. When we arrived for our reservation, the only rooms available were on the 3rd floor (4 flights of stairs). We had no idea that there was not an elevator when we made the reservation. My wife has Parkinsons and 4 flights of stairs was not going to work. The manager bravely switched us to the 1st floor room requested by someone who had not yet arrived.

Review 78:This hotel has history and traditions. Many celebrities stayed in the hotel over the years, you could see their photos and autographs on the walls. I'm sure everyone liked this place. Wonderful restaurant, friendly staff, cozy garden, centrally located

Review 79:Breakfast buffet is poor compared with price Our room had a bad smell from the bathroom

Review 80:Very nice position in the heart of Bayeux, nice staff, well prepared and willing to help. The hotel has a history and it shows it nicely! Restaurant offer is good even if pricey Room was overall comfortable and wifi worked perfectly

Review 81:Bathroom was dangerous with extremely high tub to accommodate drainage. Water pressure inadequate for normal usage. Note there is NO taxi from train station without calling and waiting. It is expected you will walk with luggage.

Review 82:Close to town sights. Nice lobby bar area with fireplace

Review 83:We stayed here several time in the 80's and wanted to take our kids back now that they're grown. The menu is superb. The hotel has expanded since we were there before, and we were able to get a couple of large rooms with sleeper sofas for the granddaughters.

Review 84:Our room had recently been renovated. The room looked nice and inviting and the bed was comfortable. The two things we had concerns with are (1) the walls are thin and you can hear your neighbors, and (2) the new hardware shower fixture did not work properly which made it nearly impossible to regulate the water temperature--either scalding hot or bone-chilling cold. The front desk staff responded immediately to our call for assistance; however, it was to no avail. Our guess is the part is defective and needs to be replaced, not just in our room, but in others too as our next door neighbor said they had experienced the same issue with theirs, only that they were able to get the temperature a bearable degree to shower.

Review 85:From the moment we arrived, Le Lion D'or staff was professional, courteous, and made us feel welcome, and the food and spirits at dinner were exceptional. Breakfast was also a very well done. The hotel was within a 5-minute walk to our drop off/pick up point for a 2-day tour of Normandy with OverLordTour Agency, which is great during times of inclement weather and when you're tired.

Review 86:This historic hotel is perfectly situated for exploring the city on foot with secure parking for cars. The attentive staff provided excellent service throughout and the restaurant was first class.

Review 87:the Breakfast was a bit chaotic; but I am not good with buffet ;it was an ordeal.for me. Items ran out, and were not replaced unless you asked for them

Review 88:Good location;in Bayeux; quiet, and and interesting historic hotel . Look at the photos in the sitting room. Safe Parking available ' staff very helpful.and would use this hotel again

Review 89:Bayeux had roadworks the first day we were there which confused our Sat nav!

Review 90:The hotel was brilliantly situated just at the end of the main street. Bayeux is beautiful and there were lots of lovely restaurants within a few steps of the hotel. We arrived and our reserved parking was labelled for us, staff were friendly and helpful and the room was lovely, with a windows onto the courtyard below. Breakfast was varied and all tasty.

Review 91:Internet signal was poor in my first room and not much better in my second room. They need to invest in a better wifi system

Review 92:Staff was very friendly and helpful. Location was perfect Nice rooms and very clean

Review 93:Amazing location. Felt really special driving through the gates. View of the cathedral from bedroom window over the roof tops of Bayeux. Very helpful and attentive staff. Loved it.

Review 94:Shows not particularly powerful. But as this was the only, albeit small, complaint, this is pretty much insignificant,

Review 95:Location was perfect for both getting into Bayeux on foot and for visiting D Day beaches and other sights. We didn't eat at the hotel, but this was not due to being put off eating there, rather a preference for getting out and about.

Review 96:It is a bit older but not really a problem- everything is well kept and comfortable. They could probably do with some rug replacements.

Review 97:We liked our rooms which were adjacent to another and big enough. We liked the location in the cute town of Bayeux. I would stay there again if visiting. The staff was genuinely friendly and helpful.

Review 98:The wifi was sketchy.

Review 99:The location was perfect. Slightly secluded yet 5 minutes from the Main Street with food and shopping and sights. The reception was between a little restaurant and a little bar/parlor area. The restaurant wasn't open for dinner but the breakfast was good, and the bar was covered with cool historical photos. Overall great stay.

Review 100:The WiFi was irritating, it dropped out while you were on it. A small thing and a very minor irritation.

Review 101:We have just completed 4 weeks in France and northern Spain. All was wonderful but Bayeux and Le Lion D'Or was marvellous. A truly outstanding establishment in a beautiful place. We will be back.

Review 102:Would have liked to stay one more day to walk through more of the town.

Review 103:Lovely inn in the heart of Bayeux, updated room and bath, complimentary wifi. Loved the lobby bar, warm and cozy with memorabilia photos, a fire and brandy at the end of the day. Staff were very friendly, courteous and helpful. Restaurant dinner was superb!

Review 104:No one there to help in breakfast room.

Review 105:Very helpful' with getting us our tour. We loved the tour guide. Man who was at desk was helpful getting us out the door.

Review 106:Prices for beakast and dinner a bit high. You will decide if it's warranted. No inroom minibar. If traveling with meds that need to be kept cool......

Review 107:The location is really exceptional, within easy walking distance to almost anything one could want to see in town. Parking is onsite, but limited, so check ahead. The restaurant is very good, and popular. Do reserve ahead. The bar is worth a visit, for the photos. They are a lesson in history in themselves.

Review 108:We loved our stay at this hotel. We drove to Normandy during the day and walked to dinner in the evening. Centrally located in the town of Bayeux. Lots of history in this hotel. Very warm and welcoming!

Review 109:Poor food and high prices for dinner in the restaurant. Generally run-down and tatty appearance of the public rooms, corridors and bedrooms, desperately in need of refurbishment. Limited parking space

Review 110:The breakfast The location

Review 111:No elevator. Seemed short staffed at dinner.

Review 112:Can walk to main attractions. Numerous eating, drinking and shopping nearby including grocery store and nice clothing shops. Enclosed courtyard with pay to park secure spots. Good restaurant for dinner and breakfast. Great English speaking helpful friendly staff. Large room.

Review 113:Nothing.

Review 114:We really enjoyed the Lion D'Or. The staff were very friendly and helpful, and the location was great. The restaurant is superb, which was an added bonus. Honfleur is a beautiful town which some incredible buildings and rich history. We would stay there again.

Review 115:Nothing. Everything was great. Would stay here again in a heartbeat.

Review 116:Charming, historic hotel with a wonderful, friendly staff who went out of their way to make us comfortable. The restaurant is to-die-for with a fabulous breakfast buffet (the local framboise jam is amazing) and the dinners were superb. We had our best meal in France here. Melt-in-your-mouth duck with a yummy sauce I won't soon forget. Tres magnifique!

Review 117:Continental breakfast was not very good I think you should offer fruit with this type of breakfast or alittle more than 2 buns and coffee and juice

Review 118:Location was good Full breakfast was good

Review 119:Would be nice if had a lift, especially for older people but they do carry your baggage to your room for you. Surprised that when asked for an iron and ironing board to be brought to room, I was told that I would have to give my clothes to hotel to iron and be charged for this service. They should provide for free to people who request it brought to their room.

Review 120:Ambiance was lovely and especially enjoyed the library as a place to relax and look at the famous photos around the room. Room 34 on the top floor was quiet and large, with a nice sofa sitting area. Enguerrand at reception was so friendly and helpful from carrying baggage to making arrangements for us. Great location for walking around this beautiful city.

Review 121:Restaurant excellent. Proximity to Normandy beeches excellent Old style Hotel with superb history in photographs adorning the walls. Staff very helpful and accepting of my cycling needs. Hope to return

Review 122:Absence of elevator and quite a climb if you are on the 3rd floor.

Review 123:Having been a regular visitors 25 years ago, it was a much anticipated return and we were not disappointed. Hotel and restaurant still as good as ever.

Review 124:The room was badly in need of decoration.Cracked tiles on bathroom floor.Paint peeling off radiator. Very difficult to fill bath as plug not working properly. Separate toilet was nice but there was no sink so had to walk back through bedroom to wash hands .General impression for price paid poor.I would not return

Review 125:This is an old hotel in an ideal location. The sitting room was comfortable and interesting with its historic photos.Breakfast was excellent and served at a reasonable time,

Review 126:Found the wi-if difficult to connect in general.

Review 127:The hotel was ideally located for visiting Bayeux within easy reach of several locations for walking to, also ideally placed for all beaches only short distances to travel by car. Great to be able to leave car securely parked at hotel for small charge. Lots of interesting facts within hotel. Would recommend this hotel to anyone wanting to visit this area of Normandy. Would use this hotel again. Hotel restaurant was excellent for evening meal, a good variety of choice and looked and tasted lovely.

Review 128:Little pricey. But had to book last minute so not a lot of choices. Otherwise, very happy with our experience. Note that check in time is not till 2pm. This caused a small problem for us, but staff quickly responded and got us a room when we arrived earlier. Was very appreciated.

Review 129:Staff was eager to make our stay a good experience. Very accommodating. Location excellent. Took your with Bayeux Tours and the meeting place was 5 min walk. Pizza joint next door is the best pizza I ever ate. Very clean rooms, very comfortable. Safe area. Outside the rims and in stairwell it smells very bad. But nothing like that in the room so no big deal. Great location.

Review 130:It was not easy to access. although there were signs, the road indicated was closed. Although parking had been requested, there was "none available", despite spaces in the car parking area!

Review 131:Excellent welcome by staff, which continued during stay. They were helpful too. Beds were comfortable . Food excellent.
