Reviews for Château de Sarceaux

Review 1:Monsieur le Marquis tried to lecture us on proper behaviour in a private home

Review 2:The nice home with Salon and Dining area, the park The friendly welcome by Madame la Marquise

Review 3:Location and accommodation great. Hosts very hospitable even when we turned up with 4 dogs(that the owner wasn't expecting-we had stated this on booking). She was a little unsure about allowing them in her lovely home but took our word that they were good! Grounds fantastic which was good for us with the dogs as we had a very long journey to reach the hotel and an equally long journey to the next hotel.

Review 4:Simply cannot be faulted. Warm welcome. Excellent food, and wine. Stunning rooms, comfortable beds. Plenty of good advice on places to visit, and which supermarkets have best offers on fine wines.

Review 5:Nothing.

Review 6:The chateau was really beautiful and the owners very charming. We loved every minute of our one night stay. The location is perfect if you are heading back to the channel ports and a perfect way to end a holiday in France. We stayed for dinner which was first class with all guests eating together, and breakfast was delicious at timings to suit individual guests. Looking forward to a return visit one day!

Review 7:Beautiful building in lovely grounds. Hosts perfect mix of involved and hands off. Loved eating with other guests. Made for really convivial evenings/mornings.

Review 8:Lovely building and rooms all antique French. Fabulous proprietor and wife could not do enough for us. Communal continental breakfast all together around a large table was lovely.

Review 9:Directions given by Booking . Com were inaccurate and we had to ring the Owner

Review 10:most unusual setting , the Hosts were fantastic , a most pleasant experience in a wonderful chateaux , like a private Dinner Party

Review 11:This is our third visit to this chateau which must speak for itself. The Host and Hostess are most welcoming and ensure that you have a memorable stay. On arrival, having been shown to our room, we were advised that pre dinner drinks would be served at 7.30 pm at which we drank a magnificent sparkling Vouvray. After drinks we dined with the other guests and more wine flowed! Needless to say the meal was superb and the evening became the most enjoyable dinner party. Thoroughly recommendable!

Review 12:Most welcoming host and hostess and the loveliest place in which we have ever stayed. A friendly family home, so much nicer than an impersonal hotel. Guests eat around a big dining table so get chance to meet and chat. Aperitifs with the owners, Herve and Jacqueline, before a delicious dinner cooked by Jacqueline. Amazing value for money.

Review 13:No bad experience but it would have been nice if our hosts could have joined us for dinner.

Review 14:A unique experience, rather like a private dinner party than a hotel stay. The quality of the food was excellent, as was the company. Our hosts were extremely accommodating and excellent company.

Review 15:We loved the setting. This is one of the best hotel settings we have ever seen. breakfast was great. Company great, met very interesting people. You feel like you are a guest in a family house that has remained the same for decades if not centuries. Our hostess was brilliant, a friendly and helpful lady who seemed genuinely concerned that we should have a good visit. We will definitely return! A treat for all those who book!

Review 16:This is a fantastic place to stay, the hosts are lovely and the house is beautiful. We had a delicious dinner with other travellers staying over at the Chateau. The night was magical. Thank you so much what a great start to our holiday in France.

Review 17:This place is a bit of a blast. It is like staying at somebody's slightly ramshackle family pile in the country which is in fact exactly the case. The owner's family have lived in the grand house for six generations and this is very much a family home where you end up having a home cooked meal (pretty good) with a load of perfect strangers. Have not had so much fun in a hotel in a long time.

Review 18:Beautiful location, lovely owners. Wasn't there long enough to appreciate all to offer. Staff ( owners ) couldn't do enough to make us feel more welcome.

Review 19:No negatives

Review 20:Wonderful welcome. When we arrived dinner was on offer - and it was delicious. Owners most welcoming and a mine of information. Delightful setting with walks in the garden and the chàteau a real family home - for six generations.

Review 21:The only negative was that Booking.com (not the Chateau) changed our room to accommodate a family with children. They did tell us, but as a result, we had a small queen sized bed, instead of the king size we had requested, my husband is 6ft 3! But it was only one night, and the room was very pretty.

Review 22:A beautiful house, in a glorious setting. Mme Jacqueline is a delight, very welcoming. The house is full of fascinating pictures and ornaments, a real home, on the grandest country-house scale. We loved it.

Review 23:More like a house party than a hotel. Evening meal was excellent but could depend on the company. Hosts were lovely. House was steeped in history. Roomd like stately home.

Review 24:Really nothing that did not meet our expectations.

Review 25:The welcome was amazing, nothing was too much trouble and it was a real family atmosphere. In addition this is a genuine old chateau with all the traditional elements.

Review 26:Wifi didnt really work...but this wasnt a major issue

Review 27:Jacquline and her husband were extremely welcoming to us and our 1 year old. The grounds were absolutely beautiful and made a gorgeous setting for a memorable dinner and drinks.

Review 28:a bit off the beaten track.

Review 29:host and hostess were very friendly and extremely helpful. Evening meals were superb! (even better when dining outside) Great staying in a historic chateau, with beautiful grounds

Review 30:The delightful welcome and the ability to bring all guests together and enjoy an evening with strangers. And the excellent home made cuisine! And the beautiful park in which the house is set

Review 31:Nothing

Review 32:Fabulous high quality location and delightful host (Herve). Dinner with the other guests sitting altogether was a real fun occasion and the food was superb. A bit like come Dine with Me but real fun at the same time. Not cheap but for our last night on holiday this was superb place to stay. We would like to thnk we will go back. Thankyou Herve. Alastair & Helen

Review 33:Tendency to group residence together for meals not always a good idea and dress rules imposed not compatible with heatwave and lack of aircon.

Review 34:Wonderful chance to experience life in a real Maison de Maitre of great character

Review 35:Our satnav didn't find the address, so we put in the co-ordinates given on booking.com and I don't think we did that quite correctly (I think I entered seconds of arc instead of decimals of minutes) so we were guided to a field about a mile north! Make sure you do this carefully and study the location on Google Maps before you set off -it is a rural location.

Review 36:It was like being a guest at a house party in a stately home! This is a historic building full of portraits and family trees on the wall, down a long drive, past the lake. You are looked after by the owner whose family has been here for centuries. Dinner is superb (note you should reserve in advance!) It wasn't our cheapest night in France but it was an experience we won't forget

Review 37:Lovely Chateau inside and out. Nice spacious room in the style of the chateau. Friendly, welcoming owners, especially our 'eager to please' hostess who even played one or two jolly tunes in the piano after our meal. There were a few mix ups with our room and our orders for the evening meal. However, while the meal was a little expensive for 3 courses and half a bottle of wine, it all tasted really good - especially the duck- and the ambience and the company of the other eleven dinner guests made the overall experience well worth the €52 each that we paid.

Review 38:Very friendly and welcoming and the eveni g mark was absurdly xcellent. Jacquiline is a wonderful pianist and marvellous host and Herve lovingly poured the apperatifs and has a fresh knowledge of wines Character rooms in z gorgeous Xhateau Thank you most sincerely for a wonderful overnight stop

Review 39:Wifi worked only for about 30 minutes, then not al all (with iPad not at all). Breakfast was quite limited.

Review 40:Beautiful and very calm surroundings, and the castle itself is also very pretty. However, it was not as spectacular or unforgetable a stay as perhaps expected on the basis of the reviews, or on the basis of our earlier stays in chateaux like this one.

Review 41:Hervé and Jacqueline (Marquis & Marquise Gicquel des Touches) could not have been more friendly. The food was excellent and dining al fresco was much enjoyed.

Review 42:That I had to leave

Review 43:Almost want to keep this a secret just for me! It's a wonderful place - very kind, friendly owners, luxurious furnishings & gorgeous surroundings. Meals were delicious and presented beautifully usung fine linens & china. Superb.

Review 44:Had read reviews prior to attending, was aware that you could have an evening meal, however felt quite intimidated when we arrived to take this option, which we didn't due to forcefulness of female host. Mention also of drinks outside which you had to pay for, a free welcome tea or coffee would have been nice

Review 45:Room, view, unique location

Review 46:We loved the feeling that we were in a house party. The owners were very welcoming. We had an aperitif in the salon and dinner with the other guests: it was friendly, relaxed with excellent cooking too. The chateau itself was subtle, beautiful and everything felt just right.

Review 47:Nothing. Everything was more than perfect.

Review 48:This is a gem to be found at Alençon . We have never experienced such a beautiful place and such a warm welcome. Jacqueline and Hervé ensured that we felt at home , and received all their guests extremely well. There is a feeling of conviviality when staying at this wonderful place. Thank you so much . We cannot wait to be back. We must also mention that the food is outstanding ; fine and innovative .

Review 49:The Chateau and the grounds are beautiful. We stayed in the old stable block which was wonderful. Our hosts were friendly and welcoming and provided a lovely dinner and breakfast.

Review 50:The place itself was lovely and the welcome was professional, but perhaps not as enthusiastic or friendly as other similar establishments we've visted.

Review 51:Wi fi not available in the room but I be,I've this was only a temporary issue. Worked perfectly in the beautiful second sitting room.

Review 52:Beautiful, historic property. Very friendly and accommodating owners. Pre dinner aperitifs and canapés in the sitting room with the owner made you feel at home. Charming rooms and lovely grounds. Dinner was excellent in the attractive dining room. Guests sit together which makes for interesting and stimulating conversation.

Review 53:It is a tad expensive but an enjoyable indulgence once in a while.

Review 54:Lovely chateau which has been in the same family for 6 generations. Steeped in history and with some very fine furniture. Set in 12 acres of private land. Very pet friendly. Great hosts who really go out of their way to make your stay enjoyable. Good location and easily accessible. Lots of parking space.

Review 55:All the rooms were beautifully furnished. I liked the combination of formal surroundings with relaxed atmosphere and friendly owners. It's quiet and great for dogs as no need for leads at all. The family have a dog of their own who came with us on walks round the estate. I had dinner there which was great...aperos and canapes, prawn and avocado salad, duck breast with variety of vegetables, cheese, tarte tatin, and a bottle of red wine. It is fairly expensive but worth it.

Review 56:Evening meal was unfortunately no worth the cost $75 per person. For that money he would expect much much better.. Service by young lady was perfect, setting was overly but wine was so so.

Review 57:Beautiful facility.. Historical artifacts on walls. Nice rooms ..beds.. Living and dining rooms

Review 58:Having to go home !

Review 59:This is a family owned & run XVII century chateau / hunting lodge ( now a hotel ) set in its own grounds, only 6 rooms + 2 apartments but absolutely superb if this is the sort of break you are looking for. Great dinner , good breakfast really nice welcome, and madame plays piano in the salon from time to time! Really excellent value for money , you are treated like a friend of the family come to stay for the weekend rather than as a hotel guest ! Handy location for Alencon , Normandy and the WWII beaches etc.

Review 60:My wife and I recently spent two wonderful nights at the Chateau Sarceaux. It was a truly wonderful experience. Our host ,Herve and hostess, Jacqueline, were warm, friendly and just wonderful. Our room was beautiful and the dinner Jacqueline prepared was one of the finest we had in France.

Review 61:Wifi a bit iffy.

Review 62:The chateau is just idyllic. Set in wonderful countryside with fantastic, attentive hosts, you know the moment you arrive that you're in for a fabulous experience. Other guests arrive who you start to get to know well over pre dinner drinks and canapés on the sun drenched terrace. Dinner in the opulent dining room is a truly five star gourmet experience followed by coffee and music in the sitting room before retiring. Breakfast is a similar delightful experience whilst keeping an eye out for stags on the distant horizon. A great, humbling experience all round made perfect by setting, hosts, food and fellow guests. I shall return!

Review 63:Creaky floors

Review 64:Real chateaux in the countryside. Run by the Marquis & Marquess. Two room suite. Breakfast included. Walking the extensive grounds was great.

Review 65:The owner was very welcoming and the chateau beautiful. Our dinner was superb value and the owner drank an aperitif with us and was friendly and informative. The icing on the cake was his gorgeous West Highland Terrier dog who gave us a wonderful welcome!

Review 66:Pillows Stayed in stables, could be better decor, felt unfinished More options for breakfast

Review 67:Host, Grounds & Chateau Dinner Location Allowing your pets

Review 68:Cd's in the cd player provided were a bit random, europop or classical.

Review 69:Very welcoming, very helpful, very hospitable owners. Lovely room, good bed, slept well. Food was home made and delicious. Wine was good.

Review 70:We stayed a night at Chateau de Sarceaux on our way down through France, and we could not have been more delighted. We were greeted and looked after most attentively by the owners, treated to aperitifs on the terrace, and the excellent dinner was served in the splendid dining room. The bedroom was charming and cosy, and the whole chateau exuded a feeling of the family's long history. Superb!

Review 71:We liked everything

Review 72:Although this is a grand chateau, with beautiful rooms, the hospitality is simple and unpretentious in the best possible way. Starting with drinks on the terrace, our hosts managed to create the atmosphere of a house party amongst their five English guests, even though we were all strangers spending a single night there, and we spent a very convivial evening, helped by the wonderful food and wine provided during the [optional] dinner.

Review 73:The pillows.

Review 74:We were in the upstairs room in the stables, which was very nice, but didn't get the wifi, which was only available in th main building. The downstairs room wasn't so appealing.

Review 75:Utterly charming and idyllic. It was like another world, and the owners made you feel like you were part of a house party rather than staying in a hotel. I was enchanted - and we were in the converted stable block! I shall never forget walking into diner and looking through the windows to see the dining table set for dinner sparkling with candles, glass and silver.

Review 76:Friendliness and warmth of reception by the owners. The evening meal was excellent. The Chateau is beautifully furnished. Just a dream place to stay

Review 77:Evening meal was a little pricey for what we had Breakfast was basic

Review 78:Family-run by aristocratic but approachable owners Atmosphere of a real chateau Good home-cooked food Beautiful grounds

Review 79:Madame came outside to welcome us as soon as we arrived - lovely spacious room with many original antiques including large fireplace. Rugs over polished floors making it warm & cosy. Typical good French breakfast, croissant, bread, yoghurt, fruit & boiled eggs. Excellent.

Review 80:We're not used to meeting other guests in a salon before a meal. It worked very well over dinner and one breakfast, but the second breakfast was like eating in a surgery waiting room. The dinner was good, though I'm not sure it was great value for money. Wifi was intermittent.

Review 81:The welcome was totally personal and seemed genuine. The room had a pleasant view but, though scrupulously clean, was distinctly 'cluttered'. The breakfast was a good, simple traditional French one. We had a great conversation with a fellow guest over dinner and one breakfast.

Review 82:The owners are extremely hospitable and welcoming and ensure the guests get to know each other to make the most of the excellent evening meal. A very relaxed atmosphere makes this a special occasion.

Review 83:There was nothing to dislike.

Review 84:Arriving at the Chateau the first time, we drove through parkland and the beautiful house which was originally a French hunting lodge came into view. We were given a warm welcome, a delightful room in the Chateau itself, and an excellent dinner with good wine in a beautiful classic dining room. It was so good we booked to return on our way back to England. We enjoyed two superb evenings and will always remember Chateaux de Sarceaux.

Review 85:1. The owner added "tax for Mr Hollande" to our bill. It was only €2 per night but it felt like we were being exploited. 2. We originally booked two rooms but cancelled one of them months before arrival. When we got to the chateau, the owner was very unpleasant and implied we'd have to pay for the second room. It turned out that another party had booked the room we had cancelled and all was well. BUT, it had the potential to turn a bit nasty... not the nicest welcome I have ever received at a hotel!

Review 86:Beautiful building, stunning grounds.

Review 87:we spent a full week at the chateau and it was perfect, the owners could not do enough for us and their contrasting personalities helped to make the holiday a wonderful experience. We will go back here again.

Review 88:Nothing!

Review 89:Staying here really is like staying with family - if your family happen to live in a stunning chateau ad really like having guests! The food was delicious, local and home made, the welcome from the owners was exceptional and the chateau itself is very comfortable without being 'hotel sterile'. Comfy beds, good wifi, en suite facilities and character oozing from every pore. I highly recommend staying here for people who appreciate the finer things in life, but don't want a generic hotel experience.

Review 90:The hospitality was wonderful. Jacqueline and Herve were the most fabulous hosts. Dinner in the gorgeous dining room was so enjoyable and delicious as was the breakfast.

Review 91:nothing!

Review 92:Fantastic place Lovely people Very helpful with us changing rooms Great food (be aware that dinner is served at a fixed time, so don't be late)

Review 93:our arrival was delayed because of an accident on the journey - yet our hosts were most accommodating and we were made to feel most welcome. Very considerate. Great food, lovely residence and good company

Review 94:nothing

Review 95:Beautiful house, where we were greeted with tea in the garden and a lovely ( optional) meal which everyone took. We were served ours in the garden.

Review 96:The smallness of the bed, the lack of facilities in the room to make tea or coffee and the 4 pm arrival time. Arriving early we were made to feel as if we were not really welcome. Our mistake but we were only an hour early and had been travelling in the car a long time. We were not offered tea as were some of the other guests who arrived after 4!

Review 97:The house , the grounds, the food , the wine and the charm of our hosts. The lovely views from the bedroom and bathroom .

Review 98:The only negative is that the wifi was not always available! We were told it was playing up that day and it may have been due to the poor weather or the internet. Otherwise no other negatives at all.

Review 99:We were greeted by the lady of the Chateaux and she made us feel very welcome indeed. She was charming, delightful and very accommodating. She offered us some tea and cake as we had driven for 4 hours. The rooms were delightful, clean with everything we needed and working perfectly. Dinner was a lovely experience on the terrace overlooking the grounds. The pre dinner aperitifs and canapes were a lovely addition to the dinner. Completely charming and delightful

Review 100:The manor house is superb and authentic, beautifully appointed, filled with antiques, clean and well cared for. The hosts are so friendly and genuine. The grounds are really wonderful, spacious, nicely maintained, flowers everywhere...the breakfast in the beautiful and historic dinong room was first rate. Jaqueline and Herve both said to treat the place as if we were at home, and it actually felt that way.

Review 101:We had a room in the stable block and not the Chateaux so although the room was very nice it had no Wifi and the rooms in the chateaux itself are much better., Evening meal was quite expensive @ 52€ per person per night.

Review 102:Setting, Our Hosts were charming, very welcoming and helpful. The chateaux itself is very attractive Evening meal of a very high standard and includes all wine and aperitifs. Breakfast very French

Review 103:Lovely accommodation set in a beautiful location. Jacqueline and Herve were the perfect hosts and looked after us very well. The evening meal and breakfast were excellent. Definitely recommended for anyone who is looking for somewhere a little special to stay.

Review 104:My husband and I enjoyed thoroughly our stay there in early May. The chateau is beautifully decorated. It has a warm ambience and there is on-site parking. We particularly appreciated the hospitality of the owner Harve and his wife Jacqueline. After early check-in at 2 pm, we drove to town centre for lunch but it was a holiday and all restaurants were either closed or finished serving lunch. We went back to the chateau asking for a simple lunch and they not only complied with our request but also cooked a very good lunch for us. Dinner was wonderful as the duck confit was perfect. Before and after lunch we had a drinks party in the parlour and socialised with the other guests at the chateau. It was a marvellous evening. Also, Harve and Jacqueline made good recommendations about destinations to visit in and around Alencon.

Review 105:Elegant. Location with friendly service from the owners - good dinner and breakfast

Review 106:Elegant surroundings, well organised, every effort made to make sure we were comfortable and enjoyed our stay.

Review 107:Beautiful chateau very friendly owners.

Review 108:Comfort, ambience, fantastic food. First visit but will certainly return as soon as possible.

Review 109:Everything!

Review 110:Amazing setting in parkland. Beautiful chateau, stunning historical property and charming hosts.

Review 111:Excellent dinner, beautiful location and delightful hosts.

The Fine Print

Please note that early check-in before 16:00 is not possible.
