Reviews for Château de Bellefontaine

Review 1:Our dinner took an excessively long time to arrive. We had one course only. The table of three who came in much later than us were served way before us. When it arrived it was cooked very badly: utterly dry and overlooked duck breast, when I'd order it medium rare. Raw potato. No staff returned to the dining room forcing me to knock and then enter the kitchen to get service and edible food. In January you would expect the fire to be lit particularly when guests are clearly using the bar which featured a stunning fireplace. Candles also remained unlit throughout the night. Wifi is limited to six hours per guest so runs out over night leaving you with no access in the morning, which seems unreasonably mean not to mention inconvenient. No TVs channels in English, despite these being advertised. On checking out, the older staff on the desk were very unfriendly and rather than pass you an invoice with the details on it, the lady simply asked questions in the manner or 'dinner? breakfast? Bar?' Which led me to miss they over charged us on drinks, until too late and we had driven away. Little things spoiled what could have been a great stay.

Review 2:The grandeur of the building is fantastic. It's warm inside. The red wine is good. The young staff seem very friendly when we tried to speak French.

Review 3:Wi-Fi coverage in our room in the main building was spotty and slow. We moved to the duplex units for our three extended nights, and there was no Wi-Fi. Duplex unit had no storage for clothes other than a few hangers in the closet. (No dresser drawers.)

Review 4:Good location just outside of town. Spacious room in the main building. Comfortable bed. Elevator in main building. Accommodating and helpful hosts. Spacious in-room safe easily accommodated iPad and Chromebook and more.

Review 5:Duplex 21 Room wasn't prepared when we arrived. We had to wait over an hour. Space was cold Bathroom 1st floor towel heater didn't work Poor pillows No wifi signal

Review 6:Duplex 21 Chateau was beautiful Lovely landscape Wonderful staff

Review 7:Breakfast was disappointing.

Review 8:Grounds were striking, especially with Xmas lighting. Apartments (2 bedrooms) available. Staff welcoming. Sitting room in main house comfortable. Parking no problem. Easy walk to town. Excellent value for money.

Review 9:We ordered Monk fish and were served cod !! The hotel is close to the railway line and we could hear the trains.

Review 10:A lovely log fire in the drawing room where we had a drink before dinner. The rooms were nice and warm on a very cold day

Review 11:Misunderstood the costs of breakfast, generally in the Uk breakfast is less cost if you have it in the restaurant but here it was more. We would have had breakfast in our bedroom at reduced cost as paying extra for the cooked food was not in our estimate worthwhile.

Review 12:Lovely setting, 20 minute walk into the town , attractive gardens. Bed very comfortable, warm and cosy room.

Review 13:Unfortunately the restaurant was closed that night - would be helpful to have known; but staff could not have been more helpful in offering alternatives.

Review 14:Beautiful old Château. Typically French with very helpful staff.

Review 15:Beautiful grounds, large very comfortable room, very accommodating staff, great breakfast, a short walk through beautiful neighborhoods to town with amazing cathedral and restaurants

Review 16:Dinner was slightly disappointing in taste. After dinner Coffee was cold.

Review 17:Chateau stands in beautiful grounds with a river with swans and ducks. There are large sculptures and a gravel frontage where we enjoyed a cold lager after a long drive. There was a comfortable room with a super size bed and very large bath to soak in before dinner.

Review 18:The cleaning details were missing. Mildew in shower and hot pot. The exterior grounds were not kept up. The wifi was not workable in the room we were given.

Review 19:Location

Review 20:No toilet upstairs need attention to detail shower ect No wifi in our room 21 Breakfast 28 euro for 2 No one showed us to our table we were ignored

Review 21:Really nothing except there was no crowd and I felt like we should have been treated like royalty. haha

Review 22:Beautiful buildings and grounds. It was a classic place.

Review 23:Nothing, would return in a heartbeat.

Review 24:The beautiful chateau grounds and hotel. The meals at the chateau were well prepared and tasty and a good value. Johannes was a gracious host and was always available. We did take a cab from the train station as it was not an easy walk. About 15 minute walk to the center of Bayeux. We really liked Bayeux!

Review 25:The dinner was okay. The breakfast was horrible. The staff very light and property needs refurbishing! Towels were extremely thin and room not made up after 4:30 pm when gone for whole day! When arrived welcome was lacking and staff always seemed too busy to help. Would not recommend! Internet service limited to 6 hrs. per day so if use in AM can't use in PM!!!

Review 26:The waiter at dinner was very helpful and had friendly attitude.

Review 27:WI Fi did not work in the room as we stayed in the adjacent to bldg. But we were happy to have our car right outside our door. Made unpacking and repackaging simple

Review 28:We loved the proximity to city yet had beautiful serene surrounding after a day of sightseeing. Relaxing and comfortable place to stay. Had a delicious breakfast daily and dinner one evening, very good.

Review 29:Evening dinner was awful, by far the worst meal we have experienced in a facility such as this. My wife had chicken which was dry and overlooked, - I had the fish, - the blandest I have ever had. We suspected the vegetables had been cooked the day before. In short, not the quality we expect in France.

Review 30:The location of the chateau close to town was good. The room was comfortable and the bathroom facilities were excellent. Breakfast selection was also good.

Review 31:The location and grounds cannot be beat. After arriving from Paris we were happy to be out of the hustle and bustle of a big city. This hotel is just on the outskirts of town but feels like it's out in the country. It's quiet and beautiful and a fun change of pace from your standard hotel. I loved walking around the grounds, watching the ducks and swans and sitting on the bridge and just breathing it all in. It's just that beautiful. It's quirky in ways so if you're expecting total luxury you'll be disappointed but if you understand it's more like a B&B you'll be delighted and be able gloss over the not-so-perfect parts. All in all we were happy with our 2 night stay but also somewhat excited to get back to a Marriott with a normal shower :)

Review 32:We celebrated a special birthday weekend with a group of friends from UK, Malta and Australia, the majority staying at Chateau de Bellefontaine. Dinner for 34 guests on Saturday evening. The hotel staff were very good and nothing was too much trouble. Food delicious. Will visit again. Excellent.

Review 33:Pillows not comfortable. Shower a little difficult. Breakfast room needs a friendlier staff and food perhaps not enough to choose if you are not there early.

Review 34:Beautiful and convenient location. Large rooms. Dinner was lovely and service excellent.

Review 35:Pillow was flat and not comfortable, desk staff at check-in could have been a little friendlier. They were better at check-out.

Review 36:Great setting, nice, older hotel

Review 37:The breakfast can use a little help with fresh pastries. The waiter for dinner needs an assistant. I would replace the carpet in the bedroom.

Review 38:The friendliness and helpfulness of the staff. The size of the Hotel/Chateau and the large bedroom.

Review 39:Wifi was non existent in the duplex rooms. Expensive.

Review 40:Really liked the option of duplex accommodation for the whole family. Staff were very polite and helpful.

Review 41:Lacked a few essentials I would expect at a 4 star hotel. Toiletries were limited and only a couple of tea/coffee bags provided in our room. Only one pillow on the bed and no spares kept in the room.

Review 42:Beautiful location. Grounds and building were amazing and our room was beautiful.

Review 43:Stayed in cottage - toilet had a view of the beautiful pond with swans, while the lounge and bedroom looked into a fence. Staff also bad - walked me to cottage in pouring rain holding an umbrella - ONLY over herself!!!!

Review 44:No tea or coffee facilities in our room.

Review 45:A beautiful location, my young daughter was treated like a princess by wonderful staff. She even got to feed the ducks and swans.

Review 46:Decoration a little tired and could do with updating/ fixing, expensive breakfast at €14 so didn't bother with it.

Review 47:Location was great-peaceful, tennis courts/table tennis/play area for kids, duplex room on 2 levels so space for everyone.

Review 48:Completely overpriced and uncomfortable! The lady at the front desk was not friendly at all - not one smile. She seemed bothered we were there. No mention or offer of dinner or breakfast. We were in a family room in the "stable." Room had zero character. It is not pictured on the website. It's basically a white box and all the stable rooms back up to a train track and chain link fence. Breakfast was 14 euro/pp for buffet of cold cereal and fake/powdered eggs. No wifi at all in our room. No couch or comfortable chair to sit in. Bed uncomfortable. Save your euro and avoid this tired, oversold place. We couldn't wait to leave!

Review 49:Location and seating in the garden - which certainly wasn't worth what we paid!

Review 50:Stayed in rooms 11 & 7, in need of TLC. Not sure of the other rooms since even the hallways in our wing were sadder then the rest of the house. Bath with only a sprayer to shower so water everywhere Worst pillows ever

Review 51:Grounds were very beautiful with gardens, streams and animals Common spaces well kept Staff super friendly, especially the man that worked the evening shift Great food

Review 52:Tricky to find at first. Wifi code only lasted several hours, had to keep using new codes.

Review 53:Beautiful location, wonderful dinner at the restaurant. Duplex suite very spacious for a family of 4. Supermarket close by. Great place to stay to explore Bayeux and Normandy beaches.

Review 54:We were staying in the stable, not the main hotel. It started with check-in, when the lady accompanying the younger lady looked unfriendly. The public rooms in the main chateau were filthy, and there was debris strewn behind the buffet in the breakfast room (broken appliances, dirty linens, etc.)

Review 55:The courtyard was pretty and our room in the converted stable was spacious and reasonably clean. The gardens were interesting but unkempt..

Review 56:We stayed in the carriage house. I have stayed there before but they could use some updating. These small apartments are better for a family than for two couples since they are not very private.

Review 57:The property is lovely--a lovely rose garden and fascinating water fowl, including a pair of black swans.

Review 58:Had a great experience visiting Bayeux, France and Chateau de Bellefontaine. We stayed two nights. The French four course dinner was outstanding and beautifully presented. Breakfast was delicious as well. Loved the Nespresso machine! The grounds were well kept with swans and ducks swimming in the pond. Groundskeepers were always around making the place pristine. Omaha Beach is about 15 minutes away and an easy cab ride. The town of Bayeux and the train station are within walking distance. We truly loved our stay.

Review 59:According to the reservation there should be a sofa/sitting area in our suite. There was one chair under the staircase up to the second level. We found another chair on the second level. The reservation should be more precise. But all in all we enjoyed our stay.

Review 60:The waiter in the restaurant did an excellent job and the food was very good. The garden is very nice to sit in.

Review 61:Beautiful hotel and setting; very peaceful gardens and plenty of parking, easy 10 minute walk into town. Dinner in restaurant was delicious; but only one member of staff serving who was somewhat rushed and we felt quite sorry for her.

Review 62:We did not like the duplex quadruple complex, Room 25, in the remodeled stable house. The quality and thought put into the design of this duplex was poor. The idea of converting the old horse stables into rooms was innovative; but, the shower/washroom is located upstairs, and the toilet downstairs. The toilet had a cold water basin only. It was inconvenient to run up and down the stairs to use the toilet-especially if one was already in the shower/washroom. There was no coffee table or couch. The item of furniture that was to serve as a coffee table was fixed to the staircase. There were two basic chairs in the downstairs area. Safety wise, there is a slight step-down at the door of the washroom/shower upstairs. That is a potential safety hazard. In addition, mice were heard playing around in the roof/attic area. This is an over-priced facility. Need I say more.

Review 63:Regarding the chateaux garden, I echo comments by others. The stream and stonebridge with white and black swan bring a nice décor to the chateaux grounds. The interior of the chateaux itself is nice and cozy.

Review 64:Wifi only in main building

Review 65:Absolutely beautiful grounds. Lovely patio overlooking pond with swans and ducks was perfect for a post-tour glass of wine. Roomy accommodations with two levels in the stable building. Very modern and comfortable.

Review 66:WiFi didn't work in our room.

Review 67:This hotel is lovely,a wonderful end to our holiday. Comfortable beds, dressing gowns, gorgeous grounds with a lake, ducks, swans & carp. We had dinner on the terrace which had a varied menu. Wonderful.

Review 68:Evening dinner was a disaster, my wife's pork slice was cold, and my half lobster was dry. I cannot recommend the food.

Review 69:Good location and nice accomodation

Review 70:The hand held (telephone) shower was unacceptable in the 21st century.

Review 71:Wonderful house gardens and situation. Very convenient for walking in to Bayeux. Room size was good and the bed very comfortable.

Review 72:Shower in the duplex was not great. The girls say the loft in the duplex was quite hot.

Review 73:What a lovely place to stay. We loved the surroundings and easy parking was an added advantage. We had a lovely dinner on site. The duplex was spacy and very nice for a family of five.

Review 74:Some of the staff were not very welcoming and breakfast was a disaster.

Review 75:The location was lovely - on the edge of a river with lots of interesting water fowl. The room was clean and comfortable.

Review 76:No wifi in part of hotel. Reducation offered though. Duplex rooms not organised in most practical way. Form over function. Very firm bed!

Review 77:Spacious, modern, classy accommodation. Not the best thought out though. Hotel was understaffed the eveing we were there.

Review 78:We stayed in the building which they called the duplex. It was very tired. The carpet was stained and very dirty. There was a dead fly under the desk. the bathroom was old and dirty. Old is one thing, but dirty is avoidable. The WI FI was slow. We stayed one night and left.

Review 79:The grounds were beautiful and the location peaceful.

Review 80:We stayed in the converted stables, which included a loft area., would be a great place for a family. The grounds included a stream, ducks and swans, tennis court, and areas to sit outside. Loved it, would definitely return.

Review 81:Breakfast options were a little more limited than we would have liked--- we ate in town every morning.

Review 82:Beautiful property, close to the town-- we walked in one day, but better to take a car-- had no problems parking in town. Rooms were nice size, clean. Staff was helpful.

Review 83:Directions to sights/restaurants in Bayeux were difficult.

Review 84:The setting was like a palace, with marvelous trees, flowers, a flowing stream, and beautiful swans. Johann was a delight.

Review 85:the wifi was infrequent.

Review 86:The hotel had a last minute special onand ,having being no the road for 2 days, was a wonderfull place to celebrate her birthday.

Review 87:Nothing very negative breakfast was included in the stay and hot foods were cold but that was the same situation at out 5 star hotel earlier in paris so must be a French thing. The pancakes and eggs were cold, but they had great breads and others things that were very fresh.

Review 88:The quaintness of the Chateau and rooms were large compared to our friends room at a hotel in the downtown area. We walked to the town and the staff is more than helpful to offer a taxi. The grounds are nice and very peaceful.

Review 89:The hotel restaurant was somewhat disappointing in the evening with lukewarm food that was not 4 star standard. A little further from the town centre than expected.

Review 90:The bed was large and comfortable

Review 91:No tea and coffee in room, felt the breakfast was lacking - juice had run out, pastries were stale, not much on offer.

Review 92:Fantastic location, a beautiful chateau, staff very pleasant.

Review 93:comfortable bright airy clean rooms fantastic location in a quiet spot with a wonderful garden alive with swans ducks and geese. incredibly relaxing place

Review 94:Staff told us we would need to eat in the restraint as Bayeux restaraunts were fully booked or closed on Sunday nights. If you need to book a taxi you had to tell then which specific restaraunt you wanted to go to. In the end we drove in (2 min drive, 10min walk) to the city and found a wonderful restaraunt selling traditional french food. We were served at 9.30pm!Found a patisserie just round from the tourist info office for delicious breakfast Monday morning also.... Staff could have been more helpful, wifi was terrible! Tip: learn basic french phrases for hotel and restaraunt

Review 95:For a last minute find at 40% off normal price this felt value for money. Room 15 was wonderful. Really relaxing nights sleep in a quiet room.

Review 96:1. Not convenient to Bayeau site; everything was a 9 Euro cab ride away. 2. When we checked in we were told that the restaurant was closed for the night. No options were provided for compensation. Cost us 20 Euros more for transport to town. 3. Our room was in an outer building. Living room and toilet on 1st floor. Shower on the 2nd floor. Bedroom on the 3rd floor. A bad arrangement for an older couple. 4. The main house appeared to have a very nice bar facility which was never made known to us that it was available. Basically we felt as though we were not guests of the house.

Review 97:When we left the hotel no cabs were available (some sort of holiday limited their availability). The madame who ran the hotel was very kind and drove us to town so we could catch our train to Paris.

Review 98:Ate in hotel one evening. Service was painfully slow (and not particularly good). Food was ok, but certainly not worth the wait. First room offered was above kitchen vent and noisy.. but luckily we were able to move.

Review 99:Beautiful house with small lake complete with swans .... Just as you would imagine staying in a chateau in France would be. Short drive to bayeaux town.

Review 100:Dinner, from €30 menu was awful. Starters were very ordinary with excessive garnish. My young chicken with morels was uninteresting and piled up with refried fries. My wife's Pork Slices with cider sauce was a few chewy, tasteless spare ribs with the same refried chips. Iles Flottant was off the menu. In fairness they refunded cost of dinner, but spoiled the evening.

Review 101:Room was pleasant, bed comfortable

Review 102:had to go to the lobby to use the wifi, and it was still slow. Staff so so, dinner was a 2 and a half hour proposition and not anything special...service tho well intentioned, molasses slow!

Review 103:I liked the old world feel of the property, that's about all it had going for it!

Review 104:Did not stay in the Chateau itself - but what appeared to be a converted barn. Not so bad, but the conversion did not use "quality" features. Needed more towels - and when requested - did not get. It was just one night - so felt like we sorta "camped out" rather than staying at a nice Hotel. Would not take much to improve to a good place - but just did not make the grade. Also the Internet was too week to work in the "barn" but was fine in the Chateau.

Review 105:Beautiful gardens and the Chateau was very "cool" in appearance.

Review 106:Room was below my expectations. No fridge, creaking bathroom door, bathtub without a curtain. First night there was a very annoying hum that made it hard to sleep; when I reported it the next day, the lady at the reception said she knew what it was and the noise was gone the next night.

Review 107:Lovely garden with pond and animals, very peaceful with singing birds

Review 108:The breakfast was seriously lacking. The staff could not keep pace with the amount of guests that cycled through vs the food quantities needed on the line. Half the food items were never replenished and you were still charged a pretty outrageous price for a few pastries and juice (that was the only thing that seemed enough on the line to satisfy the number of guests eating at any single moment).

Review 109:Very quiet and facilities/grounds were well maintained. The dinner meal was fantastic and decently priced. Parking was plentiful.

Review 110:Overpriced for what we got, very worn, a bit grungy and dirty, uncomfortable bed.

Review 111:Beautiful old structure, outdoor space with grounds (albeit sort of next to an industrial site).

Review 112:We had no bad experience, but the dining room seems to be suffering at the moment from a lack of waiting staff. Teething problems, perhaps.

Review 113:Hotel staff were particularly friendly and helpful. Our room was stylish and ensuite bathroom large and stylish, with an impressive Villeroy & Boch bath. We dined just once in the recently opened dining room and enjoyed our meal, which was reasonably priced.

Review 114:The English channels on the tv were unwatchable. The room decoration was drab and needed a good clean

Review 115:Room good size with bath in bathroom as well as shower (although no shower curtain).

Review 116:No tea/coffee facilities (we took own kettle). Loo was a bit smelly.

Review 117:Great location. Quiet with ample parking yet less than 20 minutes walk to cathedral. Friendly. Huge room with high ceilings, giant bed and fridge. Separate room for children. Seperate loo from bathroom.

Review 118:Wifi is not useable in small chateaux and is very limited in the main chateaux. Not good place to work remotely.

Review 119:Beautiful loft with first class amenities. Excellent staff. Very good hosts.

Review 120:The room was lovely, but the bathroom plumbing made a slightly irritating noise all night. My partner couldn't hear it, but it kept me awake for a while. Only other slightly annoying thing that would affect those needing wifi for business is that while the wifi is freely available, it only lasts 6 hours at a time, and my partner and I had to keep asking for new pass codes, as he needed to keep an eye on his business affairs while we were there. However, the wifi coverage and speed was very good, and this comment is only a mild irritation, not a major hiccough.

Review 121:The ambience of the dining room and the meal itself were excellent. The grounds are beautiful. This has the feel of real elegance at a very reasonable price. I would have liked to be here longer, but we were on family business and had to move on. I would definitely book here again if I was in the area.

Review 122:My only negative was the breakfast buffet for 14Euros. Not worth the price tag; I believe an a la carte option was not available.

Review 123:Loved the spaciousness of the rooms, the comfort, the surrounding grounds, and the friendly staff.

Review 124:Really worst place we ever stayed ,myself and wife travel a lot, this is a soulless hotel,no heating,no staff,no coffe or tea in rooms, the room we got you could not shower in the bath head was to low it did not stretch higher than your waist line, room was freezing ,there is no bar you have to sit in one of only two rooms in the hotel and wait for some passing staff member to fetch a drink for you from some where in the back, crazy not a bar in the normal sense, plus your to far out town to enjoy the town and resturants properly, ther is no buzz at this place,if your American or uk traveler give this one a miss ,it would not even get 1 star in these country's

Review 125:Would have preferred to have tea facilities in our room, but that is just an English thing.

Review 126:The staff were very helpful and friendly, the gardens were beautiful. The roaring fire in the bar was particularly welcoming

Review 127:The toilette cubicle. The bath tub did not have any protection to prevent water from splashing all over the bathroom. The breakfast is too expensive considering the variety/quantity/quality offered.

Review 128:The garden. The location, outside the centre, near the main roads. Free private parking. The room was spacious and comfortable, although the you could hear noise from the corridor and other rooms. The breakfast/dining room was cozy,

Review 129:no shower, just a hand held mixer tap. Wifi was a faff, with logging on and then it expired so you had to re log with other details, and it was a bit sluggish. Ate there first night, my chicken was really dry although wife's salmon was great she said

Review 130:Lovely Chateau looking building. Splendid inside. Loads of FREE parking. Close to town, 15 min walk. Nice big room. I got a deal for £91 for two nights, which I felt was good value.

Review 131:Breakfast supplies were a bit haphazard- pancakes and bacon one day but none the next and no replacements.

Review 132:Very comfortable bed and enormous deep bath. Lovely grounds with lots of fowl including black swans and cygnets. Wonderful old chateau with high ceilings and attractive furniture. Very good value.

Review 133:Wifi only worked outside the annex of the hotel - not inside and was intricate to sign in!

Review 134:Gorgeous location, close to Bayeux. Orange juice at breakfast was superb but go early as they had run out of eggs and bacon when we arrived at 0830 and didn't want to replenish them!

Review 135:Breakfast was a little expensive and the coffee was at best warm, once cold. Not always easy to find someone to talk to about breakfast issues.

Review 136:Easy 15 minutes walk into central Bayeux and 10 minutes to the railway station. Very comfortable bedroom. Helpful but not intrusive staff. Very clean hotel and a good menu.

Review 137:Main course of dinner was a little disappointing.

Review 138:Peaceful location yet short distance to centre of Bayeux.Dog friendly and excellent service at dinner.Met up with some jolly Americans in the hoteland we had a most enyoyable alcoholic evening together.

Review 139:The wifi is spotty and doesn't really work in the annex, but in the main house it worked fine.

Review 140:The property itself is absolutely stunning! We were so pleased with it, and would go back to it in a heartbeat!

The Fine Print

Please contact the hotel in advance if you plan to arrive for check-in after 6 pm.The restaurant is only open for dinner and accessible only to hotel's guests.
