Reviews for Hotel Reine Mathilde
Review 1:Located right in the center of Bayeux, across the street from the Cathedral and adjacent to the Place de Quebec where all the D-Day and other Normandy tours pick up, we booked this place primarily out of convenience, but we were impressed with its homey feel and hearty fare. Admittedly, it's a bit of a hike from the train station, especially with luggage ( a bumpy10-15 minutes), but it's closer than it seems based on a quick glance at Google Maps. The building itself is basically set up as a standard motel, but the restaurant, with its local food and ample wine notch up the ambiance a great deal. It's a bit understaffed as the front desk folks also work in the restaruant in the evening, but they are friendly and they do their job.
Review 2:Dinner was a bit lack lustre but other meals were good
Review 3:Great staff and value for money. It is right in the centre of the old town by the cathedral and bayeux tapastry. It has breakfast lunch and dinner available
Review 4:Position of the hotel is in the centre of the village; staff is very kind and always ready to help; rooms are clean and nice, in the respect of the Little village style
Review 5:From the moment we arrived we loved Hotel Reine Mathilde! Everyone was warm and inviting... Our rooms were so much better than anticipated. They were absolutely lovely, comfortable. The linens were delicious! Being so mild for Christmas time, we were able to sleep with the bedroom windows open... So quiet with the exception of this lovely song bird we heard outside our window through the night but just now and then! ( I kept hoping to hear him more so I think he was half asleep too!) We heard an owl as well... Breakfast staff was smiling, warm and very hospitable. I have not one complaint except that I had to leave and I would have stayed much longer, time permitting... the courtyard, the level of grounds manicure, the "moat"... all so very beautiful
Review 6:This is an outstanding place to stay when travelling. The staff (especially the manager) has gone above and beyond to ensure we have had a comfortable stay. The rooms are modern and clean. The bed is very comfortable and the hotel is centrally located in Bayeux. Free parking behind the hotel until 9am, which suited us as we were off sightseeing every day.
Review 7:Staff were exceptionally friendly. Location was great for the small, lovely town of Bayeux and accessible to the sites of Northern France: Normandy beaches, Mt. Ste Michel, and cideries. Breakfast was tasty but simple. The restaurant had great dinner, too. Cheaper but comparable quality to what you can find on short notice in the area.
Review 8:Beautifully renovated and updated. Staff kindly put our two rooms next door (three adult travelers, one couple, one solo). Roomy, comfortable, great location, friendly staff.
Review 9:The experience would have been close to perfect if there had been washcloths supplied in the room, but there weren't any. Seems like a strange thing to skimp on.
Review 10:Nice little hotel right in the middle of town. The young woman at the front desk was very friendly and very helpful. The room was spacious and comfortable. The bar/restaurant at the hotel was excellent. We had dinner, breakfast, and wine/snacks there during our brief visit. The hotel was about an 8-minute walk from the train station, so very convenient and easy to find.
Review 11:not that its I didnt like, but a lounge to sit in the evening would be good, but were told we could sit in the bar.
Review 12:liked everything, food delicious. blanket on the terrace chairs were very welcome.
Review 13:The staff seemed very stressed. They were stretched to try to accomodate all the guest's needs, and it was showing in the service. Also the wifi in our bedroom was terrible. We ended up having to use the internet on our laptop on the front desk at 10pm
Review 14:The hotel was right in the centre of the town close to all sites and even boasted an excellent restaurant! All the staff were friendly and helpful and the rooms in the Annexe were really spacious and comfortable. We even had a river running right outside our bedroom window!
Review 15:If you are driving, staying for anything longer than overnight means you have to fend for yourself when it comes to parking.
Review 16:This hotel punches above its weight when it comes to food served during the day and in the evening. Breakfast was fairly standard however.
Review 17:A little noisy mostly due to other guests being inconsiderate but the sound from the rooms nearby, the stairwell and street were as very noticeable.
Review 18:Great location and pleasant staff. Very clean.
Review 19:Helpful and friendly staff, lovely room good food and wine fantastic location. The Hotel and restaurant was in excellent condition and well maintained. Parking proved to be no problem.
Review 20:Location was perfect in the middle of the town near the river flowing through town. Walking distance to the Bayeux Tapestry museum. Buffet breakfast was excellent.
Review 21:Stayed in room 18 which was in a separate building from the hotel site. It was lively and comfortable. Location was perfect for exploring the beautiful town
Review 22:Superb value for money, very clean, friendly, helpful staff, fab location in the beautiful old town of Bayeux. 5 min to the tapestry, we used it as a base for the d-day beaches. They also ordered in fresh gluten free bread which was great.
Review 23:Bathrooms were quite small with almost non existant counter space. Menu at the restaurant was only so-so. But when we went back and ordered a la carte, both my husband and I thought the food was fantastic.
Review 24:Location was great. Right in front of the cathedral. Staff was friendly and helpful. Rooms were comfy. Restaurant ambience was very charming.
Review 25:One word of warning - the hotel does NOT have a car park. We had a car and had to park a good 20 minute walk away to find free parking. There is a car park opposite the hotel that we could have used for a Euro an hour but decided it was too expensive considering we were staying 3 nights.
Review 26:Excellent location for town centre. Clean and comfortable rooms and good self service breakfast (for an extra charge of 9.50 pp). Croissants and other various pasries were available along with a good choice of cereal, ham, cheese, boiled eggs, sausages, toast making facilities with a choice of preserves, fruit juice and as much tea/coffee as we could drink. Helpful and welcoming staff. The receptionist showed us to our room and insisted on carrying my luggage for me.
Review 27:Staff very friendly and helpful. Restaurant very convenient. Great location - view of Cathedral from window. Free parking in Place G de Gaulle in 250 metres. Sadly staff speak good English so don't get to practice French!
Review 28:No tea/coffee in the rooms, but they hope to introduce it soon.
Review 29:Staff were uniformly friendly and helpful. Most had very good English. Café/restaurant was excellent. Many small car parks nearby. Free parking in all from 1900 to 0800.
Review 30:Lights were unpredictable. Bathroom light came on when approached ached - not good at night. Bathroom light also went off while bathroom was in use.
Review 31:Location near the cathedral; great breakfast; large room.
Review 32:We were met by a very friendly receptionist. Our room was on the top floor so she walked us up to our room. The bed was very comfortable. Had a very nice view. We ate at the restaurant that evening and enjoyed our meal. We were taking a Normandy Tour the next morning so decided to eat the breakfast buffet. It was a nice buffet for the price. Would definitely recommend the hotel.
Review 33:Breakfast was a little disappointing, but adequate and very accessible given travelling with an infant.
Review 34:Friendly staff, great location in heart of Bayeux, and rooms comfortable and well appointed.
Review 35:Perhaps better/brighter lighting in room. Wifi non existent on top floor.
Review 36:Nice restaurant on site, good value for breakfast, close to Tapestry and cathedral.
Review 37:Breakfast, some hot food not available.
Review 38:Fantastic greeting and service from the receptionist. Could not be more helpful. All waiting staff, friendly and helpful.
Review 39:Bed was too firm for me. The shower stall was a bit tight and did not have a door or curtain which allowed water to seep into the rest of the bathroom. No lift or elevator which made for a 3 1/2 floor walk-up to the 3rd floor. The room was nice but lacked furniture - no dresser or end table with draws or a cabinet to put things. Lived out of my suitcase and messenger bag instead.
Review 40:Excellent location in the heart of Bayeux. Post Office and ATM are across the street. Laundromat is a block and a half away. The tourist office is a block away. 1/2 block to Place du Quebec where the tour groups meet. Easy walk to the Cathedral, the Tapestry Museum, the art/history museum, restaurants and shops. Their restaurant, Le Garde Manger, was very good for dinner (although the buffet breakfast was mediocre). Neat old building with lots of character and nicely renovated. Modern bathroom. Excellent WiFi. Quiet location.
Review 41:Had to carry suitcases up a flight of stairs to our room - but so worth the effort!!
Review 42:The location was brilliant! Views of the main street and the cathedral from our room. Also enjoyed a couple of dinners at the attached restaurant which were lovely!
Review 43:The rooms were small and there is no elevator. Both things I knew when I booked and both things I'expect at a lot of places when traveling through Europe. Parking is on the street but we had no issue finding a spot.
Review 44:Location was outstanding. Staff was very friendly and helpful. Rooms were small but comfortable.
Review 45:A little noisy until the restaurant closed but that was to be expected and asn't too late.
Review 46:Great, central location. Efficient, knowledgable and friendly staff
Review 47:No kettle provided in room. Sloping ceiling in the room would not be good for taller people and the shower was a little cramped too.
Review 48:The convenient location of the hotel - right in the centre of town, close to the cathedral.
Review 49:We had anticipated a hotel room with more "character." Of our2 weeks in uk and France, this was, by far, the most expensive for us,but not our favorite hotel (especially since it was sans breakfast.) Wetried the 9.50 euro continental breakfast once, and we were notimpressed (coffee from a push-button machine?). Offsite meter parkinglot is 100 yards up the hill. It would have been nice to know this inadvance, as lots were full on the weekend. Suggest notifying guests, inadvance, that they will need to find parking elsewhere, as thereisn't anything near the reception desk.
Review 50:Excellent central location right across from the Cathedral. Our 2ndfloor room in the out-building was new, big, fully appointed, andspotlessly clean. Beautiful city views from both side windows. Overall, the city of Bayeux is delightful, and highly recommended!
Review 51:We had a great stay. Clean, convenient, friendly staff. And reasonably priced. Currently a 2-star hotel, but my hunch is that it is a new place (felt newish) and should be bumped up to 3-stars soon.
Review 52:The wifi didn't work in the room. It worked down in the lobby.
Review 53:Room, breakfast & service was excellent. Wonderful location & beautiful view of the cathedral.
Review 54:Parking for motorbikes was on the pavement opposite, so very handy but not really bespoke or secure. The room, although very comfortable, was a little tight for space.
Review 55:Location was perfect. Very central with lots of restaurants in the vicinity and one on site.
Review 56:Leaving the window open wasn't an option, so room was too warm at night.
Review 57:We were on the top floor, so the the view of the roof tops and cathedral were spectacular. Complimentary croissants at the front desk were a pleasant treat. Location was centrally located to the Normandy Museum, cathedral, and Tapestry Museum.
Review 58:Clean and Friendly hotel in slap bang in the middle of where you want to be in Bayuex. We also ate at the hotel and whilst not the best food in the world it was still nice enough for the price.
Review 59:The wifi connection was not good in the room.
Review 60:The rooms are small, but nice. Very clean and modern design. The staff was friendly and helpful. There is a very good restaurant connected to the hotel. Good food and the service is in top!
Review 61:OK – this hotel is centrally located within walking distance to the cathedral and Bayeux tapestry, but that’s about as much as you could give it credit for. The stairs are steep and narrow and there is no elevator. We checked in (on line) for three nights and upon arrival were told that there had been a mix-up with room allocations, and (for a financial compensation) would we mind staying in a smaller room for the first night and our bags would be moved to our booked room for the remaining two. The ‘smaller’ room was a disgrace. It was barely big enough for one person and we kept tripping over each other to move around. Navigating around the bathroom was akin to being in a large wardrobe! The weather was very hot and humid (no air conditioning by the way) and when we opened the window, the view was limited to the kitchen roofing and associated extractor fans. We spent the night with the window open which was uncomfortable due to the street noise; common in many town centre establishments. However, upon waking the following morning the room was full of flying insects, some of whom had feasted on us during the night as we had both been bitten. Our ‘new’ room was marginally bigger with a view of the cathedral. On checking out, the compensation offered for our discomfort on the first night was 5 euros! We negotiated as best as we could and eventually received two free breakfasts – amounting to 18 euros. Oh well!
Review 62:Central Bayeux
Review 63:Bathroom a little small
Review 64:This hotel is ideally located in Bayeux really close to the Cathedral and the Museum Bayeux Tapestry and not far from the Battle of Normandy museum.
Review 65:We should have planned to stay longer.
Review 66:The location could not be better. Situated in the historic center, great parking, and located next to departure points for tours to the beaches. The on site restaurant was excellent and the staff very friendly and helpful.
Review 67:Normally I do not give reviews unless the service/hotel was exceptionally wonderful or terrible. Unfortunately, I am writing this review due to the, not just rude and disrespectful behavior of the owner, but the downright insulting, demeaning and offensive comments made by the owner himself. Let me caveat this by saying that I am a diplomat and have traveled and stayed in hotels all over the world. I have stayed in the very worst and best of hotels from hostels to five star luxury hotels, and I have lived in France for two years. Never in my life have I been so insulted by anyone in a hotel, let alone the owner himself who stated to me, "You want everything for free. I know your type. I know who you are." implying that I am some cheap, worthless piece of trash that wants a free ride because I had a complaint. Absolutely disgraceful, demeaning and unacceptable treatment. When booking the double comfort room, I researched the best deal for a family of three (my mom, myself and my 13 year old little sister) who are visiting France for the first time. Financing their whole three week trip including all travel and food makes me conscious of the money I spend. Finding a hotel room for the three of us to share in Europe is challenging to say the least. I picked this room because the reviews said it was ideal for families that needed a large room. On the site, there was a large bed and what appeared to be a small pull out bed in the room. Perfect for the three of us. Generally in France, it is not necessary to declare children and in the U.S., and as far as I know in most parts of the world, 13 year olds are still considered children. If you can fit in the available beds, there is no extra charge. When I called the hotel the day of to confirm my arrival stating we were two adults and a 13 year old, I was asked if I needed an extra bed which would cost 15 euros extra. I said yes, not realizing the beds already in the room were sufficient.
Review 68:I'm sorry everyone...it's hard for me to find anything nice to say after the disgraceful treatment I received by the owner. But to be fair, the Annex seemed to be disabled friendly on the first (American) floor. The room was modern and clean. However, I will never come back here and would discourage anyone else from staying here on the off chance you have a complaint to broach with the owner.
Review 69:The food in the restaurant was dreadful. Parking wasn't particularly convenient
Review 70:Short walking distance to all of the main sights in Bayeux. The staff were very pleasant and helpful
Review 71:If you had to use an elevator or lift. None is available.
Review 72:Close to so many sights within town and outside like DDay sites. We used our GPS to take us everywhere in minutes. Nice shops in town including Carrefour Gocery Store, Liquor Stores.
Review 73:For us the bed is one of the most important aspects of a room. I do not think a bed of 1,90m length with a slight tendency to roll to the center is good enough. Minor remark: why put the tv so high on the wall?
Review 74:Very helpful and nice receptionist. In the middle of the city center. Clean and functional room with spatious bathroom. Decent breakfast.
Review 75:The room was a tad small, but so well equipped it's hard to find fault. Had I booked earlier, I would have had the option of a larger room … not their fault! Breakfast room was impersonal with a buffet breakfast for 9.50E Nothing special about it,
Review 76:Location! Location! Location! couldn't be better situated, opposite the cathedral. Good restaurant on site for lunch or dinner with a good variety of tasty options. Friendly, helpful staff1 Lovely decor in fairly small rooms.
Review 77:The beds in our room were too firm and not comfortable but the room overall was clean and had ample space.
Review 78:Lively outdoor patio with good food, prices and service. Staff was very nice and helpful.
Review 79:Our second floor room was in the eaves and I'm 6ft tall so I had to stoop to get around the bed. Having said that, we were offered a room on a lower floor, overlooking the street, when the receptionist showed us to the room and saw my height! we said we'd be OK but with hindsight, I wish we'd have taken up her offer!c
Review 80:the reception staff are brilliant - so polite and welcoming.
Review 81:Very little wrong with this hotel - except the beds. If you're not used to European beds being very hard, you won't like them.
Review 82:We were very impressed with the location - right in downtown Bayeux. The staff were very friendly and accommodating. The girl at the front desk was very helpful in helping us map out what sights to see while in Bayeux. She also lugged a huge suit case up three flights of stairs for my wife. I was impressed! Overall, if you want a quaint, small town "feel" to your vacation in Bayeux, I whole heartedly recommend this hotel.
Review 83:Much of the town has road construction, some directly in front of the hotel. Not an issue for us as the work does not start early AM or run late in the day. Could be a challenge for handicapped visitors, otherwise, no issue,
Review 84:Hosts were super friendly. Location for Normandie tours is excellant, also for the Tapestry museum and cathedral. There were 2 great locsl restaurants just up the road. Fantastic fixed prix value for the money. Also, the sausage and cheese plate at the hotel was a very nice afternoon snack. room was very clean, shower was great, bed very comfortable with a view of the little stream.
Review 85:We had free parking due to roadworks but otherwise no free carpark (this is clearly mentioned when booking).
Review 86:Comfortable small hotel with excellent service and clean, modern comfortable facilities. Great location and good value for money with large clean modern bedroom (in Annex).
Review 87:We were given a room with disabled facilities which as we had paid for a more expensive comfort room ie more luxurious was something of a surprise. I think this should have been clearly stated when I booked the room.
Review 88:Central location, very clean, helpful staff
Review 89:The staff were friendly and helpful, allowed me to check in early so I could come straight from the train station. The hotel backs right into Place de Quebec which is pretty and also very close to the meeting points of the main tour companies in Bayeux. Everything is within walking distance. The double room I stayed in was very well appointed and I couldn't have asked for more.
Review 90:Nothing to complain for this price.
Review 91:This is a budget hotel with great location. Just mins away from everything except for the train station which is about 20 mins walk away. Staff speak english
Review 92:The staff are very friendly, nothing is too much trouble. The room was in the new annex and was spacious and comfortable. It is well located in the heart of Bayeaux within easy reach of the Cathedral and the Tapestry. The restaruant is also good and open every day.
Review 93:the rooms were small but the building was very quiet to sleep. we enjoyed being across from the cathedral and walking the streets of the town. our D-Day tour left from right behind the hotel so that was extremely convenient! the staff was very pleasant and helpful.
Review 94:So close to the D-Day beaches and so friendly. The reception was helpful and accommodating. Breakfast was delicious and beds were comfy. Will stay again and recommend
Review 95:The pillows on the bed could have been larger and more comfortable.
Review 96:Very helpful and friendly staff. Good, reasonably priced dinner and breakfast. Convenient parking nearby.
Review 97:Rooms were small but very clean. Breakfast was very good and the staff was so helpful. I lost my room key, and it could have been disastrous but Barbara was so accommodating. When the key turned up, I was able to return it without any extra costs. It also was nice to have a restaurant attached to the hotel. I would definitely recommend a stay here.
Review 98:Being upgraded due to the 'Route Barre' in the road to the hotel, also being able to have our evening meal, very nice, at the hotel. Plus, of course, being so close to the Bayeux Tapestry another plus!
Review 99:The WiFi is bad, slow, no connection (I had a room in the 3d floor)
Review 100:Very friendly staff, Nice room, good food, very good price, good WiFi in the Restaurant
Review 101:Although we had no problem I could see that having a busy bar restaurant underneath the room may create some noise and we had to park our car some distance away.
Review 102:Location, character and friendly was of staff of hotel was great. I would recommend to others.
Review 103:Excellent well run hotel, very clean and tidy and attentive friendly staff. Would stay again in a heartbeat. Highly recommended also very tasty omelettes.
Review 104:A suggestion: The room had a full length closet but no other clothes storage. Better use of space would be a half height for hanging clothes along with shelves above and below for folded items.
Review 105:This hotel has a good location in Bayeax. Short 10 minute walk from the train station, easy walk to any part of the old town and only a few steps to the pick up point for most tour vans to D-Day beaches. The room was nice and clean with free Wi-Fi. The young lady who checked us in helped us with luggage up the stairs. Recommended.
Review 106:I started eating after the other guests, so some items were running out. I therefore had to ask for a coffee and ham refill at the "all you can eat" buffet breakfast. It would have been nice if staff had paid more attention.
Review 107:The location was perfect. The rooms were modern and very clean. Wifi worked well, and staff at reception were very accomodating.
Review 108:Loved the staff, the location, the quaintness of the 'old' part that they've renovated where the rooms are. The feel of the place and the food. Excellent value!
Review 109:Rooms a very small, but this is europe... The mattress was very very soft and it kind of sinks you in the middle of it No mini bar in the room
Review 110:Location! Clean! 2 min walk to Tourist office 5 min walk to the tapestry 5 min walk to the near free car park TV channels in English Free and quick WIFI Nice water pressure for the shower Nice restaurant downstairs
Review 111:The restaurant was a bit disappointing, but it was very convenient.
Review 112:The location was great (VERY central to everything); the room (in the new building) was VERY nice. But most of all, the staff was exceptional!
Review 113:My husband and I stayed two nights at Reine Mathilde in Bayeux and had an absolutely lovely time. The staff were friendly, knowledgeable and welcoming. Our room was very comfortable, we connected to the WI-FI with no issue and were located within walking distance of the train station, the cathedral, the tapestry (and other museums) and all of the local shops and restaurants. We ate twice at the hotel restaurant and received great service. Make sure to have cider while in Bayeux!
Review 114:Room was comfortable and clean. Staff was friendly. Also enjoyed the restaurant. Of all the places I stayed in France, it was the only one that had a restaurant that served more than just breakfast; it was really convenient.
Review 115:This hotel was very quiet. We were in the annex and heard almost nothing. The location was fantastic - one minute walk to the cathedral, and maybe three minute walk to the tapestry. Five minute walk to free parking. Great spot, great hotel!
Review 116:Tea and coffee making facilities? (Scraping the barrel for criticism!)
Review 117:Great location, right in town centre by a canal and walking distance to tapestry, shops, cathedral, restaurants and free parking! Lovely, big, comfortable, modern room. Ate in attached restaurant for dinner, fabulous food.
Review 118:This an older inn ( but recently renovated) with no elevator. It was fine for us as they carried our bags up the steps, but this could be an issue for some guests.
Review 119:The rooms were newly updated and very comfortable. The staff were attentive and pleasant. Breakfast was fresh and tasty. Overall a terrific, charming experience.
Review 120:The staff was very friendly and helpful. Hotel very clean and spacious. Charming town. Great location for D-day tours. Hotel recommended a great restaurant ..Le a Petit Normande.
Review 121:Poor reception on the TV, but of very minor consequence as not important to us.
Review 122:The receptionists, both in the evening and at breakfast were excellent. They explained things clearly, and assisted with our itinerary for the day, including suggesting additional places to visit so we could make the most of the time available
