Reviews for Mesón de Sancho

Review 1:Stayed there 2 nights. The Hotel was very clean, room space enough for our 2 nights. Bathroom very spacious. Rooms and especially the complete hotel is very detailed decorated. Friendly staff. We booked also our trip to Tanger in the Hotel. Picked up by Bus approx. 50m away. Breakfast was a little "lean"

Review 2:The only couple of points that we had a problem with on this visit was that the evening waitress was not really interested in our dinner service we had to ask twice for every thing we needed .this I must say was the first time we had found any problem with the attitude of the staff and we have stayed here at least 4 other times previously. The other small point is that the breakfast is a little limited on choice . There is not a hot food option of eggs or something else suitable . But dinner was delicous as normal .

Review 3:The wonderful hotel is very well furnished and our bedroom well appointed . It was beautifully decorated for the christmas season with lovely log fires burning in all the reception rooms

Review 4:Restaurant a bit pricey by local standards - but huge portions!

Review 5:Charming spot where shabby chique meets Andulucian style. Beautiful setting with pool in lovely garden, great views and good food in the restaurant.

Review 6:Not much choice of food for dinner. Breakfast was a toasted roll not great for £4 and wifi was awful unless in reception. Nothing to really in evening we came home a day early.

Review 7:In a lovely bungalow opposite the pool

Review 8:The high winds caused the branches on the tree above our room to hit the roof which was noisy.

Review 9:The hotel is charming and this was a perfect place to stay with our two dogs as we chose a bungalow behind the pool. We had an area of grass outside and could enter and leave without going through the hotel. The food was excellent as was the service. All in all very good value.

Review 10:Nothing. Absolutely.

Review 11:Perfect athmosphere, nice rooms, warm and lovely decoration and very good restaurant. I have visited many hotels around there but it was the most beautiful and lovely - far away! Worth the price in its category!

Review 12:The bungalow we were in was very creaky. If you have a disability they are not suitable for the disabled, shower door was off it's hinges. The main road you have to cross is very busy at times. There is a lack of visibility from the disabled parking place (only one place!) when trying to exit onto the road. It can be a game of chance

Review 13:The staff were pleasant and helpful (even with our lack of Spanish), the food was very nice.

Review 14:I wasn't keen on the quite weird religious artwork in the bungalow, and I would have liked a mosquito net or screens.

Review 15:I loved the wonderfully happy and helpful staff. The food was also very good and the gardens are fabulous.

Review 16:Would have liked coffee/milk sachets in room - only provided tea!

Review 17:Need a car to get anywhere from this hotel but loved the surroundings, garden, quiet pool and lovely character and general ambience of the hotel itself. The staff spoke little English but did their best to be very obliging.

Review 18:The reception & bar staff were very surly & unhelpful on our arrival. That said their attitude seemed to improve during our stay.

Review 19:This hotel was attractively decorated & the facilities & cleanliness good. Although located out of Tarifa town some way it suited us to stay there in a more pleasant environment than we would have found in Tarifa itself.

Review 20:The most striking thing about this hotel is its luscious mature gardens. Unfortunately it also means that creepy crawlies get into the rooms quite freely. I shared my room with a cricket and a massive spider. And went home with lots of bites. The rooms are spotless, so this is not a reflection on the cleanliness of the hotel.

Review 21:Close to a very busy and noisy main road.

Review 22:Great views of the countryside and Africa in the distance from our balcony. Stunning bird life flying by on migration.

Review 23:The upgrade we were offered as my wife is semi disabled the room had a wonderful view and was very comfortable, the food in the restaurant was first class

Review 24:Our room was a bungalow overlooking the huge pool.. we had the best of both worlds.. we could get to our car without going through the hotel as if we had a private villa or we could use the hotel like a hotel...

Review 25:Nothing

Review 26:Our fourth stay here and frankly would choose no other in the area. Everything is as perfect as it can be, from the quality of the rooms to the ambiance of the restaurant and the food.

Review 27:The situation of the hotel for bird-watchers is very good. In the afternoons it was nice to follow raptor migration from the balcony. The staff was kind, and the room was clean.

Review 28:No bad experience but a little tricky driving away as not allowed to cross the highway at the hotel.

Review 29:Great pool, lovely dining and lounge setting, excellent service and delicious food, quiet.

Review 30:It is good for someone travelling by car. They have nice restaurant and rooms, but should think about renovating, because charging that much money for rooms with old furniture and old bathroom is not okay

Review 31:The rudimentary rooms and the number of steps within the hotel making it had to get around if you had difficulty walking. The bungalows were not exactly as described. The fact that the accommodation was either side of a busy main road. This 'hotel' is not near to Tarifa

Review 32:The cleanliness of the bungalow. Helpful Staff

Review 33:There was some molt in the shower of the 'new' cottage we rented. Should be maintained a little bit better: little path was a bit difficult to walk on because of the plants and some loose tiles.

Review 34:Beautiful cottages, garden and pool. Nice concept. (don't know the hotel itself as we stayed in one of the cottages)

Review 35:Not much unfortunately.

Review 36:This property is advertised as being in Tarifa, this couldn't be further from the truth..nor Tarifa!! It's about 10klms out, up a mountain. The property is also on a main road so is very noisy all night - especially in the tired bungalow we stayed in. As a final point the staff were very unhelpful when we called ahead of our arrival.

Review 37:A,though located on busy main road, the hotel is quiet and tranquil. Swimming pool good but surrounding area a little tired and in need if renovation. Individual bungalow very nice. Good restaurant. Pre book for the terrace room tables.

Review 38:Very original decor, very clean and pleasant throughout. Worth paying a little more to stay in a place like that. Staff super attentive and polite, too bad I could not stay another night.

Review 39:We found the staff were not very helpful or accommodating. The family bungalows look cute but they are very basic and certainly not worth what we paid. They were more like a hostel. The toilet seat was broken, the tiles in the bathroom were dirty and it all smelled of damp. The Wifi didn't work in the bungalows - only in the main hotel. The swimming pool wasn't clean It was a long way out of Tariffa

Review 40:The setting was pretty and their was ample car parking. The family bungalows were pretty and had charm.

Review 41:Busy road. Staff Didnt seem happy, hardly acknowledged us unless we did them, Loved the rustic style but needed some tidying up.

Review 42:Lovely relaxed and rustic decor. Sweet style. Room on the pool, nice views. Perfect for a night or two. Lovely helpful waitress at breakfast (blond). Cool surfer stop over. Relaxed.

Review 43:The hotel is on a busy main road and some 10kms from Tariffa which is where I wanted to visit. Getting out of the hotel parking area isn't particularly safe. There are also no alternative places to eat unless you drive to either Tariffa or Algerciras both at least 10km away. The hotel restaurant was average at best.

Review 44:The hotel has a very homely feel to it, with unusual decoration and a pleasant environment.

Review 45:Worst customer service ever. We were even told having 2 cups of coffee each for breakfast was too much! You get charged extra for this. No help with baggage on arrival. The standard double rooms are under a tunnel on the other side of the road. You get your drinks yourself. My husband asked the bar for a cup of ice and he was told to get some from the garage up the road! Needs different management. Avoid at all costs!

Review 46:acess paths to our room were overgrown and broken and loose tiles on steps everywhere very dangerous for adults and children alike. The parking facilities need to be improved radically

Review 47:Not a lot

Review 48:Location is a little remote. The main road adjacent to hotel is very dangerous.

Review 49:Charming very pleasant staff. Nice room with lovely view. Very good pool with plenty of shade.

Review 50:I liked everything!

Review 51:This place is so pretty you forget you're not in a 4 star. It had the feel of a bed and breakfast and is generally very home-y. I highly recommend this place!

Review 52:Beautiful gardens pool area excellent Restaurant food very good staff very helpful and friendly Stayed in cabana excellent room Car essential rural location

Review 53:I really cannot think of anything that we did not like, and that is unusual!

Review 54:It is a place of great beauty and peace. We were there for a very short time, but fell in love with it.

Review 55:The restaurant was devoid of atmosphere, and although the food was lovely, I wouldn´t have wanted to dine there again, 2 nights was definitely enough.

Review 56:The bungalow we had, 28, was lovely, the surroundings are tranquil, just what I was looking for

Review 57:The bungalow is situated on the other side of the road, and you have to cross the road to get to the restaurant in the main building, by crossing directly or by using the tunnel .This is not very comfortable and it was the reason why I did not take breakfast before leaving .

Review 58:I liked the bungalow ( because of my pet ). And the dinner was really good, also the staff very friendly . The room is very comfortable, but you get the noise of the road day and night . Probably the rooms of the main building are more silent .

Review 59:Entrance on a very busy main road.

Review 60:Convenient for tarifa. Very friendly staff at breakfast.!Interesting building and lovely pool where you wouldn't realise you were so near the main road. 4 person 'apartment' was quiet and comfortable and excellent value!

Review 61:The traffic noise from the main road that separates the two parts of the hotel was disappointing - we thought we were booking a countryside hotel that would be very peaceful.

Review 62:The gardens and pool areas were lovely and the decor was very nice. Staff were friendly and price was decent.

Review 63:The setting, the lush gardens, the pool, the tasteful decor of guests' common areas Our spacious room had a terrace from which you could see the mountains of Africa. We needed to rest and chill out after incessant travelling, and this was perfect. We were sorry to leave, we could have stayed several weeks...Tarifa is a pretty litle town nearby, but extremely windy...

Review 64:Very few staff spoke English. Room want made up until 4 PM in the afternoon. Pool area needs to be better maintained.

Review 65:Nice cool location., relatively quiet.

Review 66:It was in the hills above Tarifa but the gardens were beautiful and views stunning. The staff were extremely friendly and the rooms with a balcony were really very reasonably priced. The restaurant fod was also excellent.

Review 67:a little hard to find using GPS when property does not have street number

Review 68:the cabin was set near the pool where we sat for drinks. Breakfast and dinner in the restaurant were exceptional. The suckling pig meal to die for.

Review 69:The location, right next to a busy road, makes it feel like a motel. The breakfast is very basic.

Review 70:The hotel is beautiful and the view from the rooms is great, you can see Africa on a bright day. The garden and pool looked good, but we didn't spend time there because of the rain. It's really easy to find.

Review 71:We needed to find somewhere to sleep at the last minute, as we hadn't plan to return from Morocco to Spain early. I booked this around midnight, and showed up to a very friendly staff member who gave us 2 beautiful rooms by the pool. Although this was sort of a highway-side motel, the ambience was very pleasant - the outdoor patio/around the pool felt jungle-like and was very clean and nice. In the morning we checked out smoothly, checked out the amazing view behind the lobby out into a beautiful valley, had some yummy tostada and café and were easily able to get on our way to Gibraltar (as we were right on the highway).

Review 72:There is no excuse for any hotel in the year 2015 to not have free wifi in the rooms; not just in the public areas. The pool temp was still way too cold for the end of May; the hotel should invest in a heated pool for year-round use and comfort. Why advertise a pool that isn't usable for large parts of the year.

Review 73:Beautiful gardens and pool. Bungalow rooms were very spacious.

Review 74:Sheets on beds were not very comfortable. The under sheet felt like a plastic bag moving around the bed so everytime me or my girlfriend moved we would wake each other up!

Review 75:Beautiful hotel, nice friendly helpful staff, good food, great value

Review 76:No elevator to rooms on 1st floor, or down to pool area. Parking across the street - you either have to take an underground tunnel or run across the highway.

Review 77:Friendly staff. Very nice restaurant. Easily organized a day trip to Tangier, Morocco. Relaxing room, with a clean and spacious bathroom. Very nice view from room's balcony.

Review 78:Pool looked a bit run down, it was early late April but I do swim. Power outages all through the night?

Review 79:Style of hotel was very Spanish; suited our travel plans, room had balcony view and lounge areas had log fires.

Review 80:The restaurant has excellent food; however, there are few 'budget' choices, and a meal can be pricy. There are no other options close to the hotel unless you go into Tarifa.

Review 81:This is an older hotel with big rooms. Although right on the highway, the rooms are not noisy.

Review 82:it was in between 2 garages on the main road in the middle of nowhere. Opened balcony door and handle come off in my hand. View was a tree outside that covered any view.

Review 83:Concerned about highway noise as it is right on the curve of a highway, however the sound was muffled in the room we were in and it was not a distraction.great

Review 84:Service staff was friendly and very accomodating and rooms on the side facing Africa were large with balconies, refrigerato, and large separate bath area. The young man who greeted us on arrival went over and above the call of duty. You could tell that he loved his job and was very proud of the hotel.

Review 85:Staff were unfriendly, too near main road, quite noisey which info did not state. Food quality poor

Review 86:The detached bungalows around pool were quite quaint.

Review 87:Bungalow was too hard to negotiate with baggage. WiFi was below average except on the main reception area.

Review 88:Good location and the food was great. Due to issue with bungalow location asked and received a room on the main building.

Review 89:We felt the hotel was dated and the fact that the bed sheets in our room were extremely damp, didn't help. We asked to be moved to another room, but unfortunately it also had damp sheets. We were then told that all the rooms were like this! We tried to eat in Tarifa but spent 90 minutes trying to find a parking space, so decided to try the hotel restaurant, BIG mistake! The menu was like something from the 70's, and the food tasted like it had been cooked then. We checked out of the hotel at 5.30am it was so bad. Whilst we appreciate that everyone's tastes are different, I have been astounded by the positive reviews on various sites, I'm afraid I just don't share them.

Review 90:I'm afraid there was nothing to like about the stay, apart from leaving.

Review 91:There's was no wi-fi in the rooms, only in the reception area. The location is a bit in the middle of nowhere so going somewhere has to be only by car.

Review 92:The hotel offers good amenities, it's a quiet spot although close to a main road. It's clean, there's parking, I'd say it's a good place to stop over for one night if you're on the road in the area.

Review 93:Woke up at 7am and had what seemed 1 million ants in the room. Spoke to the unhelpful chap at reception who stated it was our fault for having rubbish on the bed side cabinet. Will not stay here again.

Review 94:Nice little hotel with great views and nice surrounding.

Review 95:street is very loud parking is packed the 'economy rooms' are not worth the rate - old, humid, very loud pool not clean

Review 96:nice ranch style lobby the new rooms are nice

Review 97:Next stay, two days later, downstairs room, fine except for ANTS everywhere when we got up in the morning. No compensation, not much concern by desk staff. Really changed my opinion of the hotel!

Review 98:First night, comfortable room, beautiful view, good breakfast. Was very happy with the hotel!

Review 99:The hotel is very cosy and comfortable - dittto for room and bed. Parking outside the hotel. Restaurant and bar. Halfway between Tarifa and Algeciras.

Review 100:The wi-fi could be better in the accommodation areas. Fine in the public places.

Review 101:We loved the first visit a year ago & 12 months on it's just as good. A friendly welcome in a beautifully decorated, modern but comfortable reception/lounge with the theme carried through the public areas and to the bedrooms. Rooms in the main hotel face to range of hills with glimpses of the sea in the distance. Private balconies face this direction with a lovely green outlook. The rooms are generous in size as is the en-suite. Central heating via radiators for the bathroom is appreciated. The corridor to the rooms overlooks the large swimming pool with plenty of outside seating and lounging areas. The restaurant is top quality, but ask to see the exceptional value 'menu de noche'. At 15.50 euros it's super value. Breakfast starts at 0730hrs [good for Spain!] and is more than adequate. Plenty of free parking to both sides of the N340. Try to insist, the hotel will if it can, a room in the main part of the hotel. Saves using the underpass to cross the road!

Review 102:Not for the arachnophobe. The exterior cabins are somewhat below par as accomodation. Fine, for a cabin, but pI was expecting a hotel room.

Review 103:Nice airy location.

Review 104:One barmaid who walked away from us when we asked for two beers in pidgeon Spanish saying she didn't understand.

Review 105:A wonderful hotel with excellent views, high in the mountains and only a short drive to Tarifa.

Review 106:The breakfast it's not buffet. It's prepared by the staf at the moment you are asking. The location isn't great but you can easily go to the city centre by car or to visit Gibraltar as I did.

Review 107:I loved the vintage style of the hotel. I would buy all furniture if possible :-) The staff were really helpful. The wifi works fine, they have lots of networks.

Review 108:Excellent accommodations and beautiful setting overlooking a river and tree dotted elevations and next to a picturesque bull ring. Outstanding service and quality local fare for breakfast.

Review 109:Please be aware that your GSM gets reception from the Moroccan network. Spanish GSM reception is poor and this may incur huge cost and change your phone' s clock so you wake up an hour late for breakfast. A note in the room to warn you would be nice

Review 110:Quaint 60's athmosphere

Review 111:Wifi difficult but it was excepcially windy.

Review 112:Wonderful, charming property! Miguel was especially helpful in dealing with some issues on a tour we booked. Thank you all for s most memorable visit.

Review 113:nothing

Review 114:Bags of character, log fire (our visit was in winter). Beautiful setting in the hills, history. Ideal base for Tarifa and surrounding area. rooms have balcony with great views. Very helpful staff, good food.

Review 115:The hotel is a great choice if you travel by car and you want to visit both Gibraltar and Tarifa. As it is typical in Spain, the hotel's restaurant opens only after eight. This is a problem if you travel with a small child. We asked the stuff and they were very kind to offer our daughter yoghurt and a croissant. A bit later we had a proper dinner in the restaurant.

Review 116:We would have eaten at the hotel but like many places in Spain they didn't open until 8 pm and we were very tired.

Review 117:We were looking for somewhere to stay close to Gibraltar and this worked very well. The hotel is right on the N340 highway so I expected to hear traffic noise in the rooms but we heard nothing in room 102. Beautiful room, very comfortable. You walk a passageway underground to get from the parking to the hotel which makes sense as it is a very busy road.

Review 118:Nothing to complain about - great hotel!

Review 119:- very friendly - welcoming to both our pet dog and our little girl and accomodating to everything we needed - Beautiful surroundings - my daughter loved exploring the overgrown bullring and the pool area - Lovely, clean well kept bedrooms and several different large public rooms for relaxing and drinking/eating - Free parking

Review 120:Getting luggage to the cottage was a little difficult.....but worth it.

Review 121:The cottages are so private and quiet. The food was wonderful. And, the staff were so helpful.

Review 122:My only one consideration is improve the quality of bath things (hair and shower, soap;etc...)

Review 123:Location, value for money, good nature sights, it is quite comfortable in the room.

Review 124:simple breakfast, typical Spanish (white bread and marmalade).

Review 125:Lovely room comfortable bed clean and spacious bathroom stunning view over the Gibraltar Strait on to Maroco Good price/qual ratio

Review 126:If a group of people are at the bar enjoying themselves with a few drinks, the noise level can be harsh and very annoying while you are trying to have a lovely dinner. Same goes with a tour group in an adjoining room. Although the food was good if we felt more inclined to get in the car and drive, we would have eaten somewhere else. We stayed three days and the noise affected us two out of the three days.

Review 127:Our room was a superior room with a balcony that you could sit on and enjoy the countryside and in the main building. After seeing the layout of the rooms, I definitely would not like any of the rooms across the highway. They are right on the road and would be noisy. In the main area, the rooms that I saw with terraces were by the swimming pool and very dark. Some of the cabins looked great and some of the others looked dark inside. The cabins were individual cabins with porches. The staff was very helpful. Caught the tour bus to Morroco just across the street. Parking was no problem. We liked our room very much and would not hesitate to stay here again if we got a similar room but would not stay here if we had to stay across the highway. The noise level in our room was minimum. From our balcony we could see what looked like a very small bull ring right in front.

Review 128:No lift Modest breakfest. We ordered a standart room and they gave us a bungalo.for extra 10 euro we got nice room.

Review 129:The room The view Near gibraltat

Review 130:Cold water in the pool - no big deal as Tarifa is just some 10km away

Review 131:Big terrace with nice views to Africa, free parking, great wifi coverage, great value for money. I would recommend booking the rooms with the terrace - you will be in the main building and you will not need to cross the busy road

Review 132:Had I known that a "bungalow" was just adjoining rooms, I would have book two separate rooms. I didn't get what I expected! Don't bother using their restaurant. Limited menu, high prices. Go to Tarifa to eat.

Review 133:Public areas are very nicely decorated. Wifi signal strong throughout. Free parking. Decent mattress, good shower, very clean.
