Reviews for La Malvasia Hotel
Review 1:The hotel was little outdated. Staff did not onderstand a word english, but we managed. Safe and fridge broken, dus niet bother to inform staff (it was not really a miss).
Review 2:Location a blast. Right next tot donana park. Town is quite old. Looked like we where in a cowboymovie. Only the saloon was missing ;-).
Review 3:It was late September and the bar and restaurant were closed. We weren't notified about this when we booked. We had to leave for our Doñana excursion at 7.45 a.m. but breakfast isn't served till 8. Instead they gave us a "picnic" (cheese and ham roll, apple and fruit juice) made up the night before so the bread was stale by the time we ate it.
Review 4:The hotel is in a beautiful location at one end of the promenade. You can walk alongside the "lake" to the main square by the church in just a few minutes. The building is very attractive and there is an interior patio with sun loungers.
Review 5:My only complaint was the rudeness of the owner. I came down for breakfast and the food was covered in flies. The owner was in reception and I asked for some fresh cheese which he refused. He immediately started shouting saying that it was flying season and what did I expect. I politely replied food without flies. I pointed out under the plates were glass covers for the food and asked why they were not being used. He replied that people drop them and they break. At this point, I walked away. He continued raising his voice to a very sweet old Spanish couple, basically implying "I was being completely unreasonable to expect food without flies". After he left the room, the old couple apologised for his behaviour to me and said not all Spanish people are like this.
Review 6:It is a beautiful building and in a tranquil location.
Review 7:Basic breakfasts. Adopt a 'bring your own' policy. Shambolic management.
Review 8:We had room 9, at the top of main stairs, perfect as we had our dog with us. Room was light & airy, thanks to large window over the delightful internal (Moorish) garden.
Review 9:Basic room without a proper window, just small side windows looking onto a wall. Room became stuffy in spite of air con. My wife and I had a problem with insect bites - probably mosquito but we always seemed to find them on us in the morning.
Review 10:Location, price
Review 11:All the doors to the bedrooms made a noise when opening. Could do with two pillows on the bed. Need seating for two and perhaps a small table in the bedroom (we were in number 8). The outside seating from the dining room was not available and would have been nice. We took our own kettle to make a drink. Local information would have been helpful. Saw little of the staff and when we did they were helpful but very serious.
Review 12:Location. Convenient for El Rocio and restaurants. Also for viewing wildlife. Calm and quiet when we went end of April. They made us a picnic on the day we had to leave early for the Donana 4x4 trip. Overall a lovely stay.
Review 13:I noticed that breakfast times were rigid. Many birdwatchers use this hotel and normally leave before 8.00 am. So like myself I had to do without on several occasions. Seems strange to go and have to eat at another hotel as they have no cook.
Review 14:The location and in particular our suite were perfect. Breakfasts were ok and adequate
Review 15:The difficulty that I experienced by not being able to speak Spanish well, and the staffs inability to deal with this, leaving me feeling unwelcome.
Review 16:Being close to the natural beauty of Spain
Review 17:The staff at reception were lacking in charm, rather surly. The breakfast was mediocre, with only a Nescafé machine for coffee.
Review 18:The hotel is full of character, and our room was very tastefully furnished, spacious and quiet. Ask for Room 2 for an even better experience, a huge room overlooking the marsh, so that you can birdwatch from the comfort of your accommodation! (Spotting scope provided). Location is ideal for seeing the town, and the visitor centre for birdwatching is opposite the hotel.
Review 19:Breakfast disappointing.
Review 20:Hotel much improved since our last visit in April 2012 but some fittings need attention. We would be happy to stay there again on our next visit.
Review 21:Wifi in the rooms needs improvement.
Review 22:Staff was very helpful and sympathetic. The location is excellent and the rooms are nicely decorated in countryside style. Breakfast is simple but not disappointing. The relationship between quality and price is very good.
Review 23:Mealy mouthed about our pet dog in spite of advertising pet friendly and our advance warning she would be with us. For info we were charged 7.50 Euro/night for dog.
Review 24:Nice place to stay for the El Rocio and bird watching experience
Review 25:One man doing reception, tending the bar, serving dinner and supervising breakfast. No wonder he looked and acted cheesed off.
Review 26:Lovely location especially for birders, and a certain olde worlde charm about the place.
Review 27:Breakfast is advertised as from 8am. This was NEVER ready as the staff arrive at 8am and then have to prepare breakfast. If you have arranged to meet your guide for the Doñana at 8.30 am this is impossible. Surely the staff can come in at 7.30am in order to prepare everything in time for 8am. Also there were no standard tea bags, only herbal, so we had to buy our own! Otherwise everything else was good.
Review 28:Good sized bedrooms, very friendly staff, easy access to el parque.
Review 29:We have stayed in El Rocio a number of times and at different hotels, including the popular Toruno Hotel. The Malvaisa rooms are larger, more attractively finished and the overall decor and ambience more attractive . The staff could not have been more helpful.
Review 30:We are regular visitors to El Rocío and this was our fourth visit to this hotel (Our last time was only a month previous!) and unfortunately it was the first time that we were disappointed in it, so much so that we cancelled our 4 night stay and only decided to stay one night and find accommodation elsewhere. The room we were given was the 'Aguila Imperial' room, the first room upstairs, just above the reception. Unfortunately this room proved to be very disappointing compared to the other rooms we had stayed in before. It was much smaller and quite a tight squeeze. And although not extremely loud, there was a constant annoying humming coming from the air conditioning system just outside the window that kept us awake for most of the night. Even though the window was shut closed, it did not stop the annoying noise penetrating into our room. Also, as the room was situated just above the reception, we could hear everything that every person said or done downstairs. We basically got about 3 hours sleep, at most, in the night. We notified the staff of the problem and they were willing to check into it (but didn't seem to believe our concerns), but they were not willing to move us to another room, unless we had paid more, so we decided that we couldn't risk another night of a lack of sleep, so we moved on to another place. We were charged a shocking €79 for the one night stay, despite our deal being much cheaper than this. For a small room, in an isolated place, excluding breakfast, during winter, we felt this charge was way overpriced. It's a pity. We usually have enjoyed our stay in this place, but not this time unfortunately.
Review 31:The decor of this tradional-style Andalucían house is wonderful. It really gives you the feel of being in the real Spain, but yet with modern comforts. The rooms are very clean and the garden is well kept. The wi-fi works quite well too and it is only a short drive to the main centres of the Donana National park. Most of the staff are generally quite friendly too.
Review 32:As with all continental European hotels, there are no tea-making facilities in the room, which is a pity as we love to start the day with a few cups of Irish tea each morning. The rooms could be a bit more roomy.
Review 33:We had stayed in this hotel about 2 years ago. We loved it so much that we decided to stay here again when we returned again. This hotel is a lovely local old-style hotel. It is very charming. Last time we had stayed in the upstairs rooms. This time we stayed on the lower ground. I preferred the upstairs rooms slightly more. Each room is named after some of the birds that can be found in the neighbouring Doñana National Park. The rooms are nice and clean with comfortable beds. The rooms are quiet but are a bit small, but decent enough size. The bathroom is clean and has a decent shower in it. The rooms can be a bit cold in the winter, overnight, so ensure that you turn on the air conditioning to keep warm overnight. Parking is very easy anywhere around the hotel, on the sandy roads.
Review 34:Non existent customer service - failed to respond to 3 emails and never got off mobile phone to talk. Breakfast was a waste with self made instant coffee / concentrated orange juice and pastries in plastic bags ( there is a proper coffee machine but nobody can be bothered to turn it on!
Review 35:Location and style of hotel on waterfront. Clean rooms
Review 36:Limited services beyond breakfast. Closed building 8pm - 8 am and no comfortable communal areas. Poor TV offering.
Review 37:Traditional building and décor, wonderful location. A sense of real Andalucía. Great for birdwatchers. And great if you accept fending for yourself like having your own picnicking wherewithal to cope with lack of hotel services.
Review 38:Reception is only manned occasionally so you need to time your arrival and departure or end up hunting for a member of staff.
Review 39:We had the second floor 'turret' room which was well appointed with AC and coffee machine. The views of the sunset over the marsh from the dining balcony outside were spectacular.
Review 40:The only negative was the restaurant and this is only a minor point, breakfast was not that great and the options on the menu in the evening was limited. However this would not stop us from staying again.
Review 41:The hotel was good value for money, our bedroom was comfortable and clean. Although the staff spoke very little English, and I unlike some do not see that as a negative, we muddled through. Altogether an enjoyable stay and one that we look forward to repeating.
Review 42:Could do with a little more attention to detail on terrace. I.e. Clean table and Cushions. Otherwise perfect.
Review 43:,Location, perfect at end of village but still in walking distance to restaurants etc. Bathroom , lovely tiles, good shower.
Review 44:The location was well suited, the town was quaint with sandy streets. Despite the bellowing of Red Deer throughout the night (rutting season) we had a super nights sleep on a very comfortable bed.
Review 45:Almost being locked out because everything closes Sun afternoon including our Hotel front door. Fortunately we we not abandoned but could have been. Also the bugs in my cereal!! at breakfast. They were v apologetic though.
Review 46:The unique setting on the edge of the nature conservation National Park. I actually watched wild horses being schooled from our bedroom window. Also the almost historic laid back calm where there are few cars on the SAND roads and horses tie up at every bar/restaurant door. Brilliant.
Review 47:Quiet. Pleasant staff. Very good location in interesting town. On edge of lake near bird observatory.
Review 48:Nothing
Review 49:Location was perfect
Review 50:Some of the rooms were not as good as others - but none were bad
Review 51:Quiet corner of the town - a nioce courtyard/harden
Review 52:Location
Review 53:Lovely hotel. When we had to leave before breakfast, they kindly made us up a picnic
Review 54:breakfast was late
Review 55:Very friendly staff, Spanish style interior, hotel placed in bird area
Review 56:receptionist on duty was fairly surly
Review 57:Location was perfect, the hotel was full of character, real rural spain
Review 58:Little to complain about
Review 59:Atmosphere Cleanliness Comfort
Review 60:Breakfast could be better.
Review 61:The hotel is beautiful. The room was very well decorated. The atmosphere in El Rocio is something unique!
Review 62:the town, the classical rural experience, the people, the food, the horses, the dunes
Review 63:Drain smell in room and noise of ambientador
Review 64:Location, views, relaxed atmosphere
Review 65:Although food was good lack of choice.
Review 66:location ; ease of bird watching which was primary reason for visit,; also very quiet and peaceful therefore relaxing
Review 67:The rooms are all different. Rustic chique. The garden is beautiful. The views of Doñana and its wild horses are stunning. I cannot say enough in its favor.
Review 68:Asked specifically for double bed. Twins pushed together was unacceptable. Also only one pillow and hard. Fifth stay Needs a facelift but still not bad overall.
Review 69:Good location. Good shower. Good breakfast.
Review 70:Welcome and staff non existent. Breakfast very poor quality and no selection, no fresh coffee just a machine! Really not worth having breakfast.
Review 71:Nice room, big walk in shower all nice and clean.
Review 72:The staff was extremely poor, one member in particular rude and appeared angry at having to be of any service to guests. The breakfast was shocking - instant coffee, stale bread and orange juice from concentrate (this was during orange season).
Review 73:The suite was excellent, with fantastic views across the nature reserve
Review 74:We arrived and receptionist was unhelpful, dismissive and seemed unhappy to see us. Although we travelled with a child, he did not offer to help carry a bag to the room, we had to ask him to help. The breakfast was very poor. Considering we had paid 138E for the room (and another 20e for the child supplement), the breakfast consisted of pappy apples, dried oranges, no choice of cereals, plastic packaged tiny croissants and some slices of ham and cheese and bread and jam. The machine coffee was not very hot and all this was self-service in a cold dining room. Good thing we had taken my daughters breakfast with us! So although the room was lovely the rest of the hotel services is seriously lacking in customer care. We have stayed at this hotel before in the spring/summer and were meet by a lovely receptionist and the breakfast was slightly better although not wonderful. So the message is don't go in low season and if you do take your breakfast with you.
Review 75:The location and view from the largest room was excellent. We could see flamingos from our room and the sunset was stunning. The room was decorated in an usual and alternative way that made it fun and comfortable to stay.
Review 76:Restaurant staff's surly attitude, absolutely appalling, breakfast minimal and limited choice, ok for one or even two nights stay, also staff were resentful when requesting replenishment !
Review 77:Location and decoration
Review 78:A few things didn't work E.G. the safe could not be locked (aproblem for every room we were informed); the air conditioning remotecontrol and tv remote batteries were dead; the wi-fi was not working onthe day of arrival and we were told we would need to change the ipaddress on our device - however, it worked the next day. All littlethings, but we paid a good rate for the hotel. The restaurant is also nolonger open and breakfast was a little limited.
Review 79:Excellent location. Lovely room, with large bed and good shower.Friendly staff and a lovely courtyard.
Review 80:was the most expensive hotel during our trip; not clear, why it was as double expensive as the one before which had even more comfort; so next time if we want to visit Donana, we will sleep not in El Rocio!
Review 81:Considering that in the Superior room we could barely edge around thebed or find room for our suitcases, the regular room must be very small.
Review 82:Beautiful hotel, lots of character. It is right next to the marshes, soyou can walk along the boardwalk towards town and watch a wide varietyof waterbirds. One of the staff members appeared to speak no Spanish orEnglish - a bit odd for a Spanish hotel - but the other spoke both andwas very helpful. We were leaving for a trip to the national park twohours before the regular breakfast time, so she very helpfully prepareda bag of fruit and sandwiches that we could take with us.
Review 83:Although the hotel had some charm it was rather dated and was only a 2 star and not 3 as we had been notified. The breakfast was ok but only consisted of cereals and ham and cheese. The bed was quite small and rather uncomfortable
Review 84:The lady that ran the hotel was very welcoming and friendly and helped us with a serious issue that we had encountered. The hotel was situated in the Donana National Park and was a stones throw away from a large lake full of exotic birds and a short drive from the main park and not too far from the beach. The town itself was set up like a wild west town with sandy streets and all the properties had posts for tethering the horses. There was a good selection of bars and restaurants.
Review 85:The best feature of the hotel was the manager who made us welcome and was very knowledgeable of the area and recommendered things to do . The negative of the hotel was it was rather dark inside and situated at the end of the village away from the centre . Breakfast was very basic and no other meals were served so it was necessary to venture out for dinner etc .
Review 86:Its a shame there wasn't a bar for coffee or drinks in the evening.
Review 87:This was a great hotel to stay in, well placed for exploring Donana nature reserve. Enrique, the owner(?), was excellent with his knowledge of the area and was always very helpful.
Review 88:This hotel is great. Built in the traditional spanish syle, it is like going back in time, but it still has all modern facilities like air conn. The manager and staff are very welcoming and helpful and the place is very clean.and tidy. The location of the hotel was perfect for us, as it looks onto the marshland/lake (La Madre) at El Rocio which is a magnet for all sorts of wading birds including Storks, Herons. Spoonbills and Flamingoes to name but a few. The town of El Rocio is very different to anywhere else we have ever been,Horses are the prefered method of transport for many people and the streets are just sand (no tarmac). It is like a cowboy town with hitching rails all over the place. It all seems to integrate very well with modern traffic etc.and we loved it. For something different we would highly recommend it.
Review 89:The Hotel was in a greta location and the Staff were tremendous. So friendly and helpful and it was a pleasure to return to the hotel to get a great smile. Rooms very comfortable and clean. Breakfast views fantatsic.
Review 90:Rooms could do with updating. We chose a bad time to visit - being immediately after the Romeria - so things were a little disorganised.
Review 91:It's right next to the Marismas of Donana National Park. For bird-watching that's excellent. One of the staff was exceptionally helpul and pointed out bird-watching sites to visit.
Review 92:The cold breakfast buffet was not particularly exciting but 'did what itsaid on the label'.
Review 93:This little hotel is in a wonderful position, especially forbirdwatchers, right beside the marsh in the quirky little town of ElRocio. There are excellent restaurants within walking distance of thehotel and there is easy, free parking right outside the hotel. The hotelis comfortable and the staff are all friendly - the owner speaksflawless English and is knowledgeable about local wildlife. We stayed inthe suite which directly overlooks the marsh and is a huge andcomfortable room. We were sorry to leave and would gladly go again andrecommend the place to others looking for a quiet spot.
Review 94:We were checked in by friendly man who we never saw again. Other than that, we saw only one staff person (a woman) during our entire 3-night stay... she apparently performed all of the front desk, security, and housekeeping duties. She was not the chef, as the restaurant was closed for lunch and dinner. She was friendly, when she could be found. Often our calls for help in the empty lobby resulted in no response. Our main concerns are with security. The room key practically must be left at the front desk, as is attached to huge, heavy plate. Half of the time there was nobody in the lobby, so a pile of keys accumulated on the desk, making it easy to retrieve when returning hours later. It is certainly a quiet town, but the security situation made us feel somewhat uneasy. It didn't help that the safe in the room was not working...
Review 95:Room was large, clean, attractively-decorated, and comfortable. Bathroom was also very nice and big. The hotel is right next to the beautiful marshes (although our room overlooked the quiet street).
Review 96:Cosy hotel. Very friendly staff, who spoke excellent english and were very helpful in giving directions on what to see in the national park. Excellent price/quality. Good location to visit the Donana national park, which is very worthwhile to visit. No restaurant, but there is a quite good restaurant at 100 m distance.
Review 97:Nice little hotel in a really cool pueblo. Enrico (I think his name) was very helpful directing us to our self guided nature/birding locations. The whole place was really cool.
Review 98:Enrique and the staff at La Malvasia were incredibly nice and helpful. We very much enjoyed our time at the hotel: our room was lovely, as was the entire facility--lots of old-world charm. We especially enjoyed the bird paintings throughout the hotel and in our room, and all the framed bird photos (taken by Enrique himself). For nature enthusiasts and birders in particular, the location is incredible: right next to Parque Nacional Coto Doñana. The lagoon and waterfowl are viewable from the breakfast room, and it's a short walk into the park (or Enrique can help set up a guided tour). We'd highly recommend La Malvasia.
Review 99:We had booked this hotel because it had a restaurant and also booked asuperior room which should have given a view of the lagoon. However ourroom had no such view,(unless you stepped on our balcony which wasapprox. 1/2 metre wide, turned sideways and peered through palm treesfor a glimpse of water). The restaurant was closed and unfortunately inEl Rocio there was a distinct lack of quality eating establishments. These shortfalls although irritating did not prevent us from enjoying orstay in the hotel but we would possibly have chosen another hotel had webeen aware of them.
Review 100:The position of the hotel was excellent for the purpose of our visitwhich was birdwatching. A very short distance from the Lagoon and withineasy driving distance of some birdwatching centres in Donana. The staffwere excellent, very helpful, informative and friendly. The town of ElRocio was not what we expected, it was like stepping back into historywith it's hitching posts and sand instead of tarmacadam roads, a verynovel experience! It was a pleasure to spend time in a peaceful, traditional style hotel.
Review 101:The hotel is furnished in typical Andalucian style and the staff were sohelpful - Enrique advised on several outings and places to eat - eachrecommendation was perfect. The hotel is full of fantastic photos ofbirds - many taken by Enrique from the veranda of the hotel itself - itis a birdwatchers paradise. The rooms are all named after birds, thereare many books to help with identification etc and it's location in ElRocio is excellent for excursions into the Donana park or for walks, meals out, shopping in the extraordinary town of El Rocio etc. We allloved it! And we definitely hope to return one day.
Review 102:The bathroom could have been cleaned a little more throroughly but wouldnot stop us staying here again.
Review 103:Loved La Malvasia. Excellent breakfast and helpful staff. Wonderfulviews of the lake from many of the rooms and the restaurant. El Rocio isa fascinating place transporting you to the wild west.
Review 104:In the time of the year the restaurant was not open,
Review 105:A beautifull location in a very special Spanish horsing riding village. With the National park Donana very closeby it is for birdwatching a veryconvient place to stay.
Review 106:Unfortunately hotel room was not as clean as expected (dust in curtains, horrible smell from sink or shower room).
Review 107:Location is great. Hotel is just at the entrance of Donana national parkand an excellent spot for bird watching or photography trips. Laguna isjust in front of the hotel. Staff was very helpful to guide us where togo or help with tools for our gears.
Review 108:Excellent, calm location on the border of the National Park of Donana, and about 50m from the bird-center where they have good telescopes to look at the flamingos and other birds. Very helpful and friendly staff. Beautifully decorated rooms and clean, newly renovated bathrooms. Excellent breakfast buffet. Unfortunately the restaurant was closed, but there were other good restaurants nearby.
Review 109:Quiet, peaceful location, by the lake. Close to other restaurants (notopen at hotel in the evening). Very helpful staff, English speaking, too. Room was "smart rustic", a good size, as was the bathroom. Goodwindow shutters blocked out all streetlight at night. Dog friendlyhotel, but the town, by its unusual nature, has a restriction on any dogbeing off lead, and the national parks do not admit dogs, so we wouldprobably not bring them another time.
Review 110:Charm, service, excellent breakfast. The hotel is well located and forbirdwatchers right next to the visitors centre. The suite has threewindows overlooking the lake and the other rooms have nice views - butnot of the lake (as I thought) The manager was exceptionally helpfulin advising us where to go in the Donana for birds watching. Thebreakfast was similar to that provided by a five stars hotel: egfreshly squeeze orange juice, good coffee, hot croissants, pastries, ham and cheese fresh fruits including strawberries (in February!) etc.and the offer of a typical Spanish breakfast as well. The person whoattended us at breakfast was most friendly and welcoming. I warmlyrecommend this hotel.
Review 111:restaurant not open for evening meal whilst we were there
Review 112:very friendly and helpfull staff, with perfect attitude. also great place for a birdwatching holiday in the donana, we definatly will visit this hotel again.
Review 113:Our room did not have a bath tub only a shower (though a reallynice shower).
Review 114:The staff were great and treated us like family. The hotel is lovelyand comfortable. The breakfast was fresh and delicious. The location isperfect for birdwatching (on the edge of the Donana National Park) andclose to beaches and shopping if you have a car. The town of El Rociois quaint and quirky and looks like a movie set from a Hollywoodwestern. Lots of good places to eat. Highly recommend a visit to thistown and La Malvasia!
Review 115:Charming, traditional building. Value for money.
Review 116:Breakfast was a bit minimal
Review 117:The village of El Rocio is unique, all the roads are sand and it is situated on the side of a wildlife reserve
Review 118:Life is too short for a sour and dismissive receptionist/manager. No sense for customer care. And I even speak Spanish.
Review 119:Location and hotel decor.
Review 120:Cold room, fairly basic facilities, staff not very welcoming, basic breakfast, orange juice in a carton (in Seville!).
Review 121:Nice position near the lagoon
Review 122:environment, location
Review 123:An entirely different destination. I would recommend it as a visit location.
Review 124:The country setting
The Fine Print
