Reviews for Hotel La Casa del Califa

Review 1:Unfortunately the weather was bad and the rooms smelt of damp. To enjoy the best of this hotel and its terraces and patios you need to go when the sun is shining.

Review 2:Casa La Califa has a wonderful atmosphere and the restaurant is superb.

Review 3:Parking is difficult, especially on a weekend. Many stairs, so not suitable for people with mobility problems.

Review 4:Friendly, efficient desk service. Lovely restaurant and roof terrace. Good breakfast in pleasant setting.

Review 5:Nothing , Vejer de la Frontera is superb.

Review 6:The location, the view , the restaurant , the staff it all was the highlight of our holiday . Olivia on the front desk was a gem , the quintessential host . She couldn't be more helpful with her travel suggestions .

Review 7:Loved the location right in the centre historic square. Our lovely Morocccan decorated bedroom overlooked the well appointed patio. The delicious breakfast is not to be missed.

Review 8:A little pricey compared with others but understandable given its popularity even out of season. Not complaining as we stayed longer than intended.

Review 9:Lovely, interesting hotel, great breakfast, tasty restaurant food in the patio - a real treat. Great location in wonderful small town.

Review 10:Wifi a bit patchy at times.

Review 11:Creative Moroccan inspired decor and food (do try the restaurant!)made this stand out from the other hotels in this price range. Lovely terraced bar with valley views. Breakfast buffet was delicious and included freshly squeezed orange juices, local cheese and meats and homemade jams.

Review 12:The room had a musty smell, but it is an old building and they do their best to mask it. It wouldn`t stop me coming back

Review 13:Great hotel, full of charm, restaurant was excellent.

Review 14:A dehumidifier was in the room which was a little noisy.

Review 15:Beautiful moorish style rooms. All fitted to high quality. Great combination of characterful and modern. Located in main plaza but very quiet in room.

Review 16:A little noise from corridors but only to be expected in such a unique space.

Review 17:Quirky rooms - Limon suite has a sunken jacuzzi bath. Helpful staff - recommended local bars and where to go.

Review 18:Bathroom had mouldy odour. Breakfast really disappointing given how delicious the food is in their restaurant.

Review 19:Beautiful roof top terrace. Wonderful restaurant for dining at lunch or night with Moroccan influence. Interesting rooms each unique in furnishing and decor. Stunning communal areas. Exotic location with lovely beaches nearby.

Review 20:The town is more country-side, we didn't feel there is so much to be seen, originally booked 3 nights but we reduced to 2 nights of which one day we spent at the beach.

Review 21:Clean hotel with style, price was high for a 2 star place! A different side of Spain to explore, short drive to the beach, but we weren't lucky with the weather, as it was very windy. They had the best raspberry jam and traditional Moroccan bread that was amazing. Their restaurant for dinner is a must try and is absolutely delicious.

Review 22:There wasn't much to do during the day because the town shut down due to heat. I needed a shaded place outdoors to sit where I could get a cool drink. I could have sat in the garden but it seemed all the tables were reserved. So, it was either sit in the room all day or walk the streets in the heat. I recommend they open the garden for sitting. Also, either provide a refrigerator or a daytime kiosk where we can get cool drinks.

Review 23:Location was awesome. Architecture was amazing. Room was wonderful. Breakfast (and restaurant) was relaxing in outdoor setting. It was a lovely buffet and they would cook you eggs on request!

Review 24:Too many stairs to get to our room, not an issue everyday, but when checking in and out with the suitcases it wasn't really comfortable - if you have mobility issues, make sure you contact the hotel before arriving to try to get a room with easier access. Also, the rooms in the bottom, next to the back exit (I think they were rooms 1, 2, 3 and 4) are a bit dark.

Review 25:The beautiful views and common areas, good response to problems (our a/c didn't work and we were moved to another room), the breakfast was excellent in the nice hotel restaurant - be sure to book a table there for a nice candlelit dinner

Review 26:This is our 3rd stay. We will return every year. It is a fantastic small hotel. The rooms are quaint comfortable and peaceful. The restaurant is excellent. Breakfast delicious. Staff charming. There is a lovely bar on the rooftop with great views. You can enjoy afternoon tea. A pre dinner cocktail or a liqueur after dinner.

Review 27:Not a bad experience but the Wifi signal could have been better but why worry about Wifi in such a lovely place.

Review 28:The staff, location were excellent and we will return. Room upgraded at no extra cost.Brilliant restaurant.

Review 29:The hotel is not very well maintained. We - two elderly couples - had two completely different rooms. One was quite spacious with nice double beds and a good bathroom; the other was small with a double bed that just fitted in and a tiny bathroom. In both rooms there were a lot of irritating things - a broken showerhead, a hairdryer that did not function, no cold water, omly hot and even hotter, curtains that didn't fit, a door that is difficult to open and close and worst of all - in the small room the airco did not function. If you want to book a tanble in the restaurant you can only do so for 20h. which is much to early in Spain. But they want to use the tables twice each evening, so the Spaniards get the later hours of 21.30h. and onwards. The hotel is not suitable for people with mobility problems.

Review 30:The hotel has a wonderful atmosphere, lots of stairs and full of nooks and crannies. It is located in the middle of a wonderful 'pueblo blanco' or white village. The food in the restaurant has a north african influence and is very good.

Review 31:While this is an exquisite building, it is hard to deal with all the steps.

Review 32:The rooms are quite nice; the restaurant is absolutely beautiful. The food is excellent and so is the ambience.

Review 33:The smell is the bedroom was a little bit annoying but nothing unusual for such an old building. One could say it's part of its charm.

Review 34:Great location - the hotel is very centrally located, overlooking a part of the town and the valley below. The restaurant is must - fantastic moroccan cuisine in beautiful garden.

Review 35:It was a bit like living in a maze - we went up and down stairs to find our room, which was in a little courtyard. There's a beautiful terrace, and various reading rooms/sitting areas in the different houses. Dinner in the garden was really good, and the breakfast was excellent.

Review 36:Everything looks very nice from the outside, but in the rooms there are a lot of things which do not function well or not at all because of insufficient upkeep e.g. the airconditioning kept going out despite the high temperature in the room, the showerhead was broken, the hairdryer did not function, in the morning we got hot or even hotter water from the tap, cold water wasn't available. We stayed for one night with two couples- one room was of decent size with a decent sized bathroom and good twin beds, however the other room was obviously a single room, very small with a small 'double' bed and an even smaller bathroom. Because the airco didn't function properly it got very hot during the nighttime. The price of both rooms was the same and considering it was already too high for the decent room, it was far too high for the small room, especially since it is only a two star hotel with not that many facilities. The hotel is not suitable for less mobile individuals.

Review 37:The moroccan style food is excellent. The hotel lies in the middle of a very nice village. It occupies an interesting building with lots of levels, stairs, nooks and crannies.

Review 38:Free parking not the easiest. You have to be lucky to get a space on the square, otherwise a bit of a walk.

Review 39:Everything about the hotel was just stunning. The location, views, rooms and just exploring the different ways up and down the many floors shows what character and attention to detail the hotel has. The staff were all very friendly and the restaurant was very, very good. Beautifully located on a very picturesque square in a lovely town.

Review 40:Noisy dehumidifier in bathroom. A small fridge in the room would be a good idea. There was room in the cupboard under the TV.

Review 41:Good breakfast, a change from toast and tomatoes.

Review 42:Casa del Califa is an excellent hotel to relax and to enjoy the beautiful village of Vejer. Very good service by very friendly staff. ...and the kitchen offers high level cuisine.

Review 43:We stayed two nights. On such a special occasion, we were disapointed that service was rather impersonal, even with prior warning/information given. Long wait in the bar for our drinks on first night, as they were busy.

Review 44:Have always admired the position of the hotel and loved the atmosphere of the moorish decor. Love the bar and views out. Dinner was fine. The breakfast in the morning was amazing with fresh orange juice (you put the oranges in and the juice comes out!).

Review 45:Wifi and tv signal was very bad to non existing. Staff at the check-in desk not very helpful

Review 46:Charming hotel very well situated in vejer, rooms are nice and clean

Review 47:This was a favourite spot of my husband and I on our tour of Southern Spain. The attached restaurant had amazing food and the hotel and restaurant space were so unique as it was etched into the hillside of the town. It was like nothing else we encountered on our trip and would highly recommend staying here. The staff were friendly and hotel comfortable and affordable.

Review 48:I would say that the hotel is not for that less well abled person, with many twists and turns and steep steps between the different areas. Having said that, the same can be said for the whole town!

Review 49:The hotel is quirky in a nice way, with a typical authentic Moroccan feel. The restaurant is just lovely, again with that typical Moroccan flavour to the food.

Review 50:Excellent quality small hotel with a strong Moorish aesthetic, located in to a very pretty and historic setting, and including first class restaurant and service at reasonable price.

Review 51:We appreciated the coffee/tea in room, but sadly the hot water heater was unexplicably dirty with crud.

Review 52:Splendid location. Old castle-like building. Parking could be a challenge, but they can arrange if you reserve in advance. Delightful fresh breakfast included in the restaurant/courtyard.

Review 53:The room was dark, and the air con unit (for heating) was a bit noisey.

Review 54:Lovely location in hilltop old town, pretty spot by beautiful ornate fountain.

Review 55:We had 3 delicious meals here during our stay and now we dream about their food. The beautiful Moorish hill village is very romantic and the people are welcoming and friendly. Califa is the place to be in Vejer!

Review 56:Problems with Wi-Fi and Internet access in our room ... which may not be a problem if you want a real and relaxing Spanish holiday!!

Review 57:Lovely hotel in centre of Vejer de la Frontera, with lots of interesting 'nooks and crannies'! Our room was spotless and had very nice view over the main square in the village. Charming restaurant with a real Moroccan feel and menu in the basement with outside patio area.

Review 58:We should have planned to stay longer..

Review 59:Excellent location, parking just a few minutes away (fees apply). Fantastic room (La Palmera - one high flight of stairs to go up, but not a problem) and the view is gorgeous. Possibility to make free tea/coffee in the room. Restaurant - is very tastefully decorated, has modern amenities and is very clean. Great choice of food at breakfast (included) and fine cuisine a la carte (Moroccan) in the evening, using organic local ingredients. Hotel staff very nice, friendly and helpful. Overall a very inspired combination of old architecture and modern amenities, we liked everything and we were sad to leave. We are planning to go back sometime and stay for at least one week.

Review 60:Too many people smoke in Spain and litter the marvellous lane ways with their cigarette buts, pity.

Review 61:Amazing white village, Califa is well located. The restaurant is soooooo good, the Maroc cuisine is yummy. Do visit the muesium in this village, gives one a good in site into hoe village people built their homes and cultivated their food. We only spent 1 night, you need at least 2-3 nights to appreciate this village and hotel with its rooftop views.

Review 62:The bathroom required a dehumidifier to prevent build up of damp smell. No big deal but I expect some might be put out by thus

Review 63:Location. Free refreshments in room. Good breakfast. Good sized room.

Review 64:Nothing

Review 65:The hotel was just lovely - the staff efficient and friendly and the food to die for. We had an evening meal in the restaurant which we thorough enjoyed, and breakfast, which was included in the price, was wonderful and included home made breads and croissants, home made jams and freshly squeezed orange juice.

Review 66:Many steep and narrow staircases to traverse with luggage.

Review 67:Location could not be better. Staff friendly and helpful. Interesting decor. Good restaurant. Excellent breakfast.

Review 68:Minor quibbles (since there is a space to offer them here); the hotel is informal but the stairs are steep - an offer of help with the luggage would have been appreciated. The hotel tv only offers Arab and Spanish channels.

Review 69:Hotel La Casa sits on side of Vejer's main square. Depending on the room you choose there are views of old men sipping sherry in the cafes beneath - or from the building's rear rooms majestic views over the dry plains towards Medina. The building is pretty and quirky with winding corridors and staircases twisting up and down from a lovely courtyard garden where breakfast and dinner are served. The food is exceptional. Breakfasts are leisurely and dinners are inspired by the town's Moorish history and culture.

Review 70:The rooms we were allocated were at the bottom of the hotel and had a musty smell when you walked in.

Review 71:The location and quaintness of the hotel. The restaurant at the hotel was excellent.

Review 72:We booked a table in restaurant on the day we arrived the only time available was 8pm, we tried to book a table in the restaurant on 3 different nights but on each occasion we were told it had to be 8 or 8.30 the later bookings 10.30 onwards were for the Spanish people, we tried to explain although we are English we have lived in Malaga for the last 10 years and we don't eat at 8.00 pm it is too early.

Review 73:A lovely quirky hotel

Review 74:our room (Luna) was next to the laundry room and we could hear the dryer running parking it a problem but we lucked out and someone we leaving and parked just near the hotel

Review 75:the over looking of the little plaza and strolling around it and the nice restaurants all around and close to it.. the breakfast was good and glad they would make a couple of eggs if you requested nice big bathroom, bed comfy

Review 76:Nothing at all.

Review 77:This hotel has real charm. From the moment you step through the door the lovely staff take excellent care of you. The food in their restaurant El Jardin del Califa is out of this world and very reasonably priced. Coming to this hotel is like a a second honeymoon. It's perfectly located on the Plaza de Espana and our room Attico had a view of the Espana and the roof terrace allowed you to see beautiful Vejer and beyond. We've stayed in some exclusive hotels in Dubai, Brazil etc. but to us El Casa Del Califa is the perfect place to stay. Our second stay at this wonderful hotel. Thank you for the attentive service and yummy chocolates left on our room. We will be back again and again :)

Review 78:Nothing!

Review 79:As first time parents, we chose Vejer for our first night away from our little one. The tranquility of Vejer and proximity of a range of bars and restaurants made it the ideal choice. A must visit venue!
